Sharks EXPLORING All Options with Dallas Pick | SJ READY to Make a SPLASH in the Trade Market?

what the Sharks do with the Dallas pick is one of the most intriguing questions of the summer we look at some of the options for the Sharks you’re Locked on Sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part of the Locked on Podcast Network your team every day hello welcome to Locked on Sharks the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area my name is JD Young caretaker at the Ree also the co-host of Locked on NHL i want to thank you for making Locked On Sharks your first listen proudly part of the Lockdown Network where we cover your team every day and if you want to be an everyday all you have to do is just follow wherever you get podcast or you can watch on YouTube as well and today we’re going to be examining some potential options for the Sharks with the uh Dallas pick right uh we’re going to be looking at some long-term pieces guys who maybe haven’t established themselves uh in the NHL but pieces who could be part of the Sharks future we’re going to be looking at some established players um and then maybe just looking at bundling some picks and moving up so um before we get into some of these long-term trade targets um you know the Sharks do have plenty of options here and you know there’s plenty of great players in this draft that you could get with the 30th pick and you know I we’ve spent a lot of time looking at some some guys here and you know people kind of uh stand out personally like Henry Busich uh Bill Zanin uh Shane Bi like there there’s going to be good players who are potentially there for for San Jose right but the thought of maybe moving this player for a or this pick for a player who can help you this year might be appetizing for the San Jose Sharks who right one of the best prospect pools in the NHL very young exciting core and you you you think this year is is supposed to be a year of growth and getting a player who can help you along help you now and in the future might not be the worst decision for Mike Greer and the Sharks as they look to kind of start to exit this rebuild so uh we’re going to start by looking at uh some players here who haven’t quite established themselves or maybe there’s some untapped potential here and uh again something to keep in mind with all of these guys that we discuss discussed is the Dallas pick is probably not going to be the only thing attached like but this is going to be the base this is going to be kind of the the key component of it and it’s most likely for many of these players um going to be this pick plus prospects or NHL player or whatever but like it’s not just going to be like Dallas pick for player X like this we’re just using the Dallas pick as kind of the basis for these trades so uh I want to start in New Jersey where they have um a log jam on the blue line uh you have Douggee Hamilton Brett Peshi uh Brendan uh Dylan uh Jonathan uh Kovacivich uh Jonah Seenthaler um all under contract for NHL players you have Luke Hughes who’s a RFA who’s going to uh he’s going to get the bag here really soon um nose leaves two young defenseman uh and Sheamus Casey and Simone Neich who you would think might be potentially available via trade uh both these guys parted the 2022 draft class uh Neich who was a the second overall pick uh and then uh Sheamus Casey who was a second round pick and um was dropped because uh he’s a small boy um but both of these guys have to some degree you know earned the right I think to to kind of at least be full-time NHLers uh or at least have the opportunity to be full-time NHLers and when you look at the the New Jersey blue line there’s not a lot of opportunity for them to potentially do anything because they have so many guys signed uh for multiple years out of all those guys Brendan Dylan is the first player is going to be coming off the books in 2627 um everybody else is signed for massive you know long deals um and there’s there’s plenty of you you would think there’s there’s an opportunity for the Devils to maybe try to recoup some value or maybe reset the clock on a draft pick uh by potentially moving either Casey or Neich and especially again when you’re going to be paying Luke Hughes probably a boatload of money here really soon um so Neich is an interesting one because of course he is a sticker on pick both these guys are second overall pick uh both these guys are right-handed defenseman uh we do know the Sharks need more dynamic defensemen uh whether they’re left-handed or right-handed but getting a right-handed defenseman wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world um Neich of course we do know during the season there was rumors that he wasn’t happy with his current situation of just kind of being stuck and not there’s not really a path for him to move forward um and so he kind of makes the most logical sense but I did want to bring up Sheamus Casey as well because um as a former second round pick he’s done very very well um in the in his limited time at least when it comes to production um in the NHL so again Casey none of these guys have really kind of established themselves as like full-time NHL players but um Casey has like and we played 14 games last year for the Devils four goals four assists eight points while playing you know 13 minutes a night um and yes sample size very very small but like that’s nothing really to kind of sneeze at there like that that’s some very nice production um in a very small sample size um even in the AHL well we don’t get the time on ice but he’s definitely was playing a ton in the AHL um you know with the Udica comments he had in 30 games he had three goals 15 assists for 18 points in 30 games like that’s not too bad as well either um this is a guy who was a point per game player with University of Michigan in in his last season in the where he played 40 games had 45 points from for them um and like he’s a guy I think yes he is smaller at 5’10 180 pounds but I think that’s still a guy that you you think the ceiling could be extremely extremely high for him um the other of course the big name Simone Nimich um he has not kind of produced at the same rate um so he played 27 games with the Devils this year uh two goals two assists four points and then with Udica uh 34 games five goals 18 assists 23 points um but of course the size right he’s 6’1 190 pounds like he’s of you know second overall pick um and a player who you know has much more tools than than a shame is Casey but both these guys I I think are intriguing options for the Sharks to potentially look at as you try to find a long-term piece here both of them on their ELC’s um like you have their rights for a long time they’re still very very early in their development like these are both really really intriguing pieces thing with the Devils though of course is um they don’t do anything uh because yeah you know yes they’re not playing right now but that’s come take a job one or two like Douggee Hamilton not the healthiest dude you know uh around and I know they have some injury issues even going into this season so having a backup plan with Casey and Neich isn’t the worst thing in the world for them um you do though wonder if maybe trading one and keeping the other might be a possibility um for the Devils because then you don’t have potentially two unhappy players you might just have one unhappy player and between the two I think Neich is probably more of the my career pick because of the size um but like then again Sheamus Casey’s put up some really nice numbers here and despite being smaller like he’s played big-time games you know as a former University of Michigan product like he’s he’s played big-time hockey in his his career and has produced very well during that time so I do think that these are players who the Sharks should be at least considering of these two um because they’re very young they would fit your core both of them 21 like and you’re going to have to offer more yes we know this but um if that if starting with the first round pick the fir from the the Devils and whatever else you add to it for a Devil’s team that maybe looks for a little bit of an injection of prospects that they they can either develop or use as trade bait for themselves as they try to kind of take a big step this uh next season you know you look at what the Sharks did right they got Tomas Hurdle they got a bunch of stuff for them and then they just turn around and trade all that bunch of stuff to get Ascrov uh later you know a year later or not even a year a couple months later so that could be another an option for the Devils as you know just to try to just get kind of restock the your your kind of ammo here to give you uh stuff to go do later on so um but yeah I think both those players should be potentially in the Sharks um you know options of of what to maybe do with this uh pick here so uh we’re going to be looking at some established players um and why Sammy Gard might not be the worst thing in the world uh for a late first round pick uh so we’ll get to that here in just one second ever check your bank account wonder where did all my money go between dining out online shopping and lockdown NHL for half off your first year all right before we continue do of course want to thank you guys for making locked on Sharks your first listen if you haven’t yet perfect time to subscribe as we get you ready for a busy draft weekend and then free agency both these things are right around the corner all this of course with all this work that we’ve been doing uh next week we will have our simulate start our simulated offseason where I’m going to pretend to be my Greer and do what I think uh is the best for both the Sharks this season and long term so make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well all right so some other targets and these guys are going to be more kind of established players who’ve played in the league and um either might be trade bait because of a team’s current situation um just or maybe they’re just not fits or just trade rumors uh I want to start wi with uh Sammy Gerard uh who’s rumored to be potentially available uh we know the Colorado Avalanche um they don’t have any cap space and they don’t have much when it comes to picks or prospects etc as they’re very much a win now team uh semiggard’s 27 uh left-handed shot 5 foot 10 170 pound defenseman um who’s got two years left on his deal at $5 million um something to keep in mind though uh he does have a nine team uh is it nine or 10 teams um he does have a trade uh nine team no trade list so the Sharks could be very much on this list but again we don’t know so we’re just going with the odd saying he may they may not be um for the Colorado Avalanche right um you have like $20 left what was that you know I have $3 the uh Patrick meme right they have $1.2 million left in cap space um and they have some other things to try to kind of figure out um they also don’t have any picks right uh they don’t have a they don’t have a pick until the fourth round this year they don’t have a pick until the fourth round in 2026 and they do have their first and second round picks in 2027 so they just don’t have a lot of picks so for the Sharks who need a offensive puck moving defenseman Gerard might not be the worst option here and is very very easy to acquire like $5 million moving a first round pick and maybe something else or whatever like but even a first round pick for a team that is very much capstrapped late first round pick and that gives uh Colorado just more ammunition at the trade deadline of um whatever they pick with this guy like you you assume he’s they’re probably going to go the Vegas route and no first round pick is ever just going to play for them um but I think it makes a lot of sense especially for a guy who’s very good has two years left on his deal and um isn’t going to block any of your young prospects right and everyone’s like well you know Luca Canyone is supposed to be kind of the next Sammy Gard who better to learn from right if you’re Luca Canon than Sammy Gard so um I think I would be super excited to get a guy about Sammy Gard um get him here and let him play for the next two years to help kind of just stabilize the back end of course the offensive numbers aren’t super like they’re not blow you away or anything like that um because one right he’s kind of the third uh third banana on the team with Tae and Mar in front of him like he’s never going to get the the kind of big-time opportunities with those two guys in front of him which is fine but you the hope is right you give him more of an uh chance here uh see what he can do uh you know where he’s going to kind of be the guy but I I think for the Sharks right he he scored last year he had 24 points in 73 games year before they had 18 and 59 37 to 76 like I think this is a guy who could probably put up for in San Jose i wouldn’t be surprised if he’d crack the kind of 40 point mark uh e pretty easily with the Sharks i mean we saw what Jake Walman did for San Jose and I think Grard is a better offensive player um there’s I think there’d be a really nice chance for Guard to have kind of a career year with the Sharks if they did acquire him just because again he’s going to get all the opportunities uh in the world for you so um so yeah he’s a player I would be very interested i know he’s left-handed please don’t like I can feel the eye rolls uh from here but he’s a player I’d be really really interested in uh two other guys who we have spent some time talking about again kind of as the first pick um to the the Dallas pick as kind of the base for the trade um Bowen Byum who has kind of established himself as an NHL player there’s still some questions about what he is and what he would do and kind of in the same situation as Gerard where there’s always been guys in front of him and he’s never been the guy on a team but um we know that Buffalo wants to be very aggressive this off season and trying to get NHL players um who can help them capitalize and uh we know uh BMS is expected to sign a massive contract um and they’ve already got a lot of money locked up to two players in Owen Power and Dalin um so Bow and Byron would make a lot of sense there you do wonder if maybe it’s the first round pick and Mario Ferraro who Ferraro can kind of come in he’s much cheaper option at $ three and a half million dollars um and just has a different role kind of that more defensive defenseman and would kind of play a little bit lower down the lineup and maybe it’s the first and Ferraro for Bow and Byron like as a start again I think who knows where both these teams are but that might be an a potential option there just because uh I think for for Buffalo you’re you’re getting an NHL player who can help you right now um you have some more at first that you can again draft somebody and then if you turn around and flip them at some point or just let them kind of develop like again I think there’s some nice players that potentially add with the 30th pick um there and so that could be an option uh and then of course there’s Jason Robertson who we did talk about last week and I don’t think it makes a ton of sense but we we know Dallas right i mean they fired Pizza Boore they which we all saw coming um Pizza Boore he does the thing right i’m going to get to the Western Conference Finals i’m going to throw my goalie under the bus um and then I’m going to get fired and go to another team and I’m going to get them to the conference finals and do the same thing um we’ve seen the Pete Dbor uh movie multiple times right um but maybe I mean we we’ve heard the words ruthless offseason discussions potentially happening with the Stars you know we did the whole stars pick you know what kind of picking over the stars and stuff and I think the Mason Marshman makes the most sense from San Jose’s point but um if you’re if you’re the Sharks getting uh getting Jason Robertson to put with Mlin Celibbrini um sounds pretty sick to me and you’re going to like the problem is there’s going to be a bajillion people lining up right and to like everybody in their and their mother would be lining up to try to acquire Jason Robertson because uh Jason Robertson very good at hockey two-time 40 goal scorer like you’re going to get 30 to 40 goals a season from him he’s 25 uh yes she’s going to need a new contract in a year but like with the cap going up and you have a proven proven goal scorer people will be more than happy to pay Jason Robertson $10 million a season in a year from now because he’s very good and he’s going to be worth the $10 million because the dude scores goals and that’s usually what you look for right is production and ice time the dude plays Yeah the dude is very good um and he scores and stuff so while it’s super fun I just don’t know i I don’t know if the Sharks would be I don’t want to say desperate enough because I think some other teams would just get more desperate where it’s like we don’t care about the picks and prospects we’ll just give you whatever because we want to get a a guy who can help us win right now well Jason Robertson would make the Sharks much better the timeline right and yeah so we’ll see but uh but those are some guys to like the established players who I think would be targets for San Jose um so we’re going to be talking about trading up and who to potentially target and I have a the perfect team in mind uh so we’ll get to that here in just one second all right before we finish up do of course want to thank you for making the lock on Sharks your first listen uh for your second listen you should check out the allnew lockdown NHL game night every game every night until Stanley Cup champion is crown get local analysis on a national scale find NHL game night on lockdown on YouTube or wherever you listen to podcast all right the other option to kind of move the pick is to trade up right um yes you could trade back but the Sharks have multiple second round picks including pick 32 or 33 sorry excuse me and then they have um the Sen’s pick which is pick 53 like trading back maybe but I think a a a better option would be to package picks and move up so uh of course uh Puckedia has a really nice kind of uh pick value chart uh where they’ll tell you kind of how much each pick is worth etc etc um so according to their chart the the 30th pick is worth 11.38 points where pick number one is worth 100 and then pick you know and they just kind of go down from there um so pick 30 for for the Sharks is worth 11.38 pick 33 uh the first pick of the second round which the Sharks do have is P worth 9.92 so if you package those up together those would get you uh to 21.3 total points um the St louis Blues who are currently picking um right now at pick 19 that pick is worth 19.81 81 points so yes it’s a slight overpay from the Sharks but you know you usually do have to overpay a little bit to move up um I think the Blues make a lot of sense um from the Blues perspective they don’t have any picks right they have their first round pick this year okay they don’t have a second they don’t have a third and they don’t have a fourth because of you know uh the offer sheets from last season so for them maybe moving back you know 11 spots recoup some value might not be the worst idea in the world um because right you don’t you don’t have a pick in the second round you don’t have a pick in the third round you don’t have a pick in the fourth round um and we know this draft is is very especially especially once you kind of get after 15 like it’s very murky and maybe you just have some guys you like in that range for the Sharks right you hope the hope is you move up to 19 and you see if someone falls to you right someone that you thought might be a top 15 pick starts to fall to you or you go up and you get like a guy like Blake Fiddler or whatever defenseman that you cover that you feel is going to be much better than what you would have gotten at 30 here so those are some potential like I think they make a lot of sense you also look at a team like the sends um so Ottawa who’s picking at 21 again maybe Ottawa throws something back to you as well but Ottawa who is also very aggressive um you know with moving some picks and stuff like the Ottawa doesn’t have their second round pick or maybe it’s the Sharks and 30 plus the Ottawa pick type of thing and you move up there and you just give them their their pick back and then they move back 10 spot or nine spots type of of scenario so um I think those are two teams to potentially look at um you know some of the other teams in that range like you have you have Calgary but they have multiple like they have a pick at 31 so like for them I don’t think moving back makes a ton of sense um you could look at Montreal but Montreal’s got two picks they have 16 and 17 and then they also have 41 so maybe they don’t mind kind of taking one of those picks and sliding back probably to throw something else a little extra in there just to kind of maybe get up to 16 or 17 maybe not we’ll see um like those I think teams that kind of make sense in that range um if maybe they want to try to kind of recoup a little bit of value especially again in this year’s draft um a lot of the other teams though in that range don’t make a lot like the Flyers like the Flyers have picked 22 they got from from Colorado flyers have a bajillion picks they don’t like get any more picks to them i don’t think really matters um same thing like Columbus columbus has a ton of picks has a fair amount of picks as well um because like they have pick 14 pick 20 they don’t have a second round picks maybe they could be potential option there to move back a little bit but they do have like a third a fourth so maybe Columbus they trade the Minnesota pick um at 20 that could be one uh we know the um the Preds have a ton of picks so they don’t make a lot of sense at 23 um the Kings at 24 they don’t have a second either so maybe they’re another one to kind of move back like we’ll move back a couple spots to go and then kind of recoup a little bit more value here so there’s some options I think in there for the Sharks but I I think the Blues one makes the most sense from I think of a value of what you’re getting uh what you’re getting from like at at pick 19 is of course much better than what you’re getting at pick 30 and you might be able to get a especially if you want to target a defenseman assuming Michael Mis is the pick at at number two if you want to go get a solid defenseman like there I think there there’s some options in that range which I think at 19 that you’d be really happy with so I think the Blues make a ton of sense there so out of all the like things I I still think trying to target a long-term piece whether it’s one of the Devils players or whomever else is potentially out there makes the most sense for San Jose but um getting some immediate help not the worst thing in the world and if you want you’ve you know if you want to kind of package up some picks to go get a guy who you think is going to be an impact player for you later you know in a couple years you have a bajillion picks you have like you know you have picks in next year’s draft as well i’d be super fine with that and we’ve seen Mike Greer been able to manufacture draft picks um before and if he moves around the board and we’ve seen him move up for guys um I I wouldn’t be surprised if he did that as well you know I mean he moved up last year even his three picks moved up before the draft was able to secure Sam Dickinson which looks like an amazing trade from the Sharks perspective right um you know he moved up uh a couple years ago uh for Brandis Fabota like the he’s been more than willing to kind of move around the the draft board um to go kind of target his guys and you know even moving back I mean we saw the very first thing he did was move back from 11 to 27 to go just try to add more pieces to the draft um board like that’s seems to be working out pretty well for for San Jose at this point so uh but yeah I wouldn’t be surprised if I I would be more shocked to be honest if the parks the Sharks are picking at 30 than if they did something else with the pick i still think they’re going to be very they’re going to do something with that pick whether it’s move up or go get an NHL player uh like I said I wouldn’t be surprised if if that’s my career’s plan and he kind of has hinted at it a bunch this off seasonason so um that’s going to be it for me today we’ll be back tomorrow we got uh more draft profiles uh coming up so make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at Lockdown Sharks follow me on Twitter and Blue Sky Fryhole till tomorrow bye friends [Music]

The San Jose Sharks stand at a crossroads with their 30th overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft, facing a decision that could significantly impact the team’s future. JD Young dives into the myriad of possibilities, exploring potential trade scenarios that could reshape the Sharks’ roster. He examines young defensive talents from the New Jersey Devils, such as Simon Nemec and Seamus Casey, while also considering established NHL targets like Samuel Girard from the Colorado Avalanche. The host even touches on the tantalizing, albeit unlikely, prospect of acquiring Jason Robertson from the Dallas Stars.

Young doesn’t stop at player trades, however. He meticulously analyzes the option of packaging picks to move up in the draft order. Using Puckpedia’s value chart as a guide, he illustrates how San Jose might potentially climb as high as the 19th overall pick. This strategic maneuvering could dramatically alter the Sharks’ draft position and the caliber of prospect they could potentially select.

The podcast delves into the complex decision-making process facing the Sharks’ management. Young carefully weighs the pros and cons of acquiring immediate help versus long-term assets, taking into account Mike Grier’s past draft strategies. He speculates that the Sharks are more likely to make a bold move rather than simply selecting at their current 30th position. Listeners are invited to tune in for this comprehensive analysis of the Sharks’ draft options and the potential roster-shaping decisions that could influence the team’s trajectory for years to come.

  1. Getting Simon Nemec and putting him with Sam Dickinson as the top pairing D-men, to me would bring the rebuild closer to being complete.

  2. Use Dallas pick and our own 2026 1st round pick to get number 1 pick. Take Schaefer AND Misa.
McKenna would be nice but it’s not a guarantee that the Sharks would get him. Specially because I think the Sharks will have a Ducks type of jump this year.

  3. OK trading for Girard, but he needs to be long term. Not a 2 year rental. Though I guess they could trade him at end of year 2. Byram is a solid player, but the injury history makes this a bigger gulp.

Still like the idea of trading up with MTL Picks (16 and 17) and including the Carey Price deal, which could help them navigate a potential cap bonus issue, makes sense.

Fiddler does feel like a good fit

The era of GMMG 'manufacturing picks' is going to end in the not too distant future.

  4. I say if we don't get Schaefer I still think we need another defender, so I would love Simon wang late first casue what he has you cant teach and I would feel comfortable taking a guy like that considering how deep our prospect pool is at forward and center. If we do get Schaefer, I would say double dip, get both, cause you can never not have enough good defencemen

  5. Hate to be a buzz kill, but…
Strongly disagree that Girard is worth a 1st. If thats the target i would just re-sign Ferarro.

And the price for Robertson is going to be Eklund and the Dallas 1st. At minimum.
Just grab all the BPA defense you can and see what sticks.

  6. Rumor was Aves were interested in Ferraro at the last trade deadline. Maybe one for one with Girard? Aves get cap relief and Sharks get a player with more offensive upside

  7. I would argue next year is the year to make a trade splash. The consensus value of next years draft is much higher than this year and it puts a greater premium on the draft picks. Take Misa or Schaefer, see who falls into the mid teens.

Packaging the DAL 1st and SJS 2nd makes sense to move up in the draft. Pretty sure there will be guys dropping out of the top 15. I've been a Blake Fiddler fan since the start of the season but I've liked Logan Hensler more. I would like to see Grier go after either but I think Hensler has the better game.

I wouldnt be interested in paying for Girard or Byram. Sharks have their own Girard in the pipe known as Cagnoni, same type of player. And for Byram it's buyer beware, injury history, contract extension and playing with Dahlin pumping his output, could he do it by himself? Just too many red flags for my liking.

  8. Going to be super interesting what MG does with pick 30 & 33 (& 53) if we get Misa at 2 compared to if we get Schaefer at 2.

If we get Misa at 2, then it’s pretty guaranteed MG will move up to get a d-man in the teens/20’s like Aitcheson, Jax Smith, Hensler or Fiddler.
But if we get Schaefer at 2, it lessens the need/desire to move up from 30-33 to get that better d-man.

—> So, if we get Schaefer at 2, does MG still trade up to pick in the teens/20’s? And if yes, does he move up to get his 2nd defenseman in the 1st rd? Or does he move up to get a forward that falls?

I would love a combo of something like Schaefer-Hensler-Ryabkin for our first 3 picks. Or Misa-Fiddler-Brzustewicz. I think we need 2 D and 1 F with the first 3 picks.. no matter what order they come in.

  9. Grier would love to punt 2025 quantity for quality if it’s in 2026. I think he’d take anybody’s 2026 first for the bundle of 30/33/53, even if it’s protected. Trading up from their own pick next year is the thing.
