MLB Now | Brian Kenny breakdown Detroit Tigers win 2 of 3 games vs Cubs in battle of 1st place teams

this was a big series over the weekend battle of Central Division leaders tigers taking two out of three against the Cubs and in this game Glabber Torres one for three scored twice he had a walk as well he’s got a 381 on base percentage jack Flareity six shutout innings nine strikeouts tommy Kanley came on in the eighth threw a scoreless inning had two strikeouts and what do they have in common the Tigers off season selectively opportunistic labber Torres over from the Yankees just a one-year $15 million deal tommy Kley one year 7.75 and Jack Flareity 2 years 35 remember Flarity was expecting big money and what the Tigers did is Flareity is making 25 million this year he has an option after this year so they kind of made him kind of flush right away i just thought it was brilliant moves from them and it paid off you could see yesterday how it all worked out at what is not backbreaking money but going out and getting the talent that they needed yeah absolutely they made great moves i love what AJ Hinch does with the team and the bullpen and the all the pitching they’re pitching as top five in baseball right now uh Flareity has been a very effective pitcher throughout his career he had like one bad stretch with Baltimore helped the Dodgers win the World Series i thought it was an excellent signing to get shortterm very late very short-term deal uh player option uh same with Glabber didn’t appear to have a need at second base they figured it out and uh it’s worked out nicely and Keanley was effective generally for the Yankees and yeah uh you know short-term deals they they seem to work for the Tigers they do a nice job and I just thought it was creative as well again to frontload the money for Flareity so we could feel like respect from the marketplace like he expected a longerterm deal you’re not getting it but you’re getting kind of rich you’re getting 25 million this year so that did it for them yeah and and you you touched on the on the rotation obviously with Flarity Scubble Casey Mer who’s been really good The thing that stood out to Glaver Torres I was not expecting this especially going to a different team he was starting to get that decline there was a bit of an attitude issue remember when Jazz Chisum went to the Yankees he refused to change positions so you’re wondering okay is this going to be We talk about the the culture we’ve been talking about that a lot this show is he is this going to be that that guy similar to Harvey Buyers coming over and all of a sudden just kind of you know runs by he’s been really good the plate discipline’s even better this year and more walks and strikeouts right strikeout rates down fantastic unbelievable and a 381 on base in this day and age it’s like you know like 20 years like a 420 i mean it’s it’s monstrous meanwhile how about this over the weekend John Haymon is here we have three fascinating topics i think they’re fascinating and I don’t know where you stand on any of them we might completely agree we’re reasonable people we might disagree all right let’s start with this hunter Dobbins rookie pitcher for Boston about to face the Yankees uh quotes come out saying he’d rather retire than play for the Yankees if the Yankees were the last team to give me a contract I’d retire all right I’ll go out first i admire the hutba we We all We you know we worry about these oh they never say anything or he he says something i’m not going to beat this kid up good for him absolutely i’m with you 100% i mean I know some people think rookies should be seen and not heard i thought this was a great quote it was honest it was from the heart i’m not exactly sure why he hates the Yankees it’s funny his father His father was drafted by the Yankees then traded and his father was a big Red Sox fan so fine he’s a Red Sox fan good like it shows some fire and it’s funny it’s funny it’s a little weird to be a Red Sox fan in in in B in Houston or wherever he’s from dallas but his father was right right he’s not he’s not from Worcester you know or something like Worcester worester but then it’s like they ask Aaron Judge Aaron what do you think of these comments i’m going to kill him like what do they what do you want he said he was a little surprised and he hit a home run off him we don’t hear that kind of thing anymore i mean he mentioned that Ken Griffy said something like that and it’s Ken Griffy which was a little Griffy also as a kid didn’t like being you know told to get off the field as a kid vlad Jr didn’t like to be it’s Yankee security that they don’t like get off the field kid remember that uh what also too is that he was asked like who’s your this was Gabriel Star of the Boston Herald reporting least favorite Yankee and he said can I say all of them except Andy Pettit like that’s gold that’s gold like of course Andy Pettit famously a good guy from Texas outstanding guy good for him I mean all of them terrific except you know he’s my new favorite Red Sox now perfect right I kind of like this kid all right Dodgers in St lewis yesterday Clayton Kershaw was pitching at Bush Stadium they evidently played Matt Adams home run on the big scoreboard the home run against Kershaw in 2014 in the National League Division Series on a loop like it played over and over again adams shocks Dodgers but that’s Kershaw in famously in the sixth inning getting lit up it’s a you know it’s a painful thing for his legacy that he has to live with his failure in the postseason and they rub it in you know what i’m not down with this i don’t like it i think it’s also a slippery slope once you let the stadium ops guys go to work hey let’s do this let’s do that um I’m not down with it i don’t like it at all i we agree again I I don’t think that’s the right thing to do clayton Kershaw is maybe the best pitcher of the last half century i think he deserves better than that and I thought his quote was perfect bush league it’s in Bush Stadium perfect i would not if it it doesn’t even matter to me that much that it’s Clayton Kershaw i show more respect for Kershaw i don’t care if it’s anybody if it’s a relief pitcher that you got to last year hey here’s that home run that this this guy right now gave up last year no I’m not down with that i don’t think that’s where we want to go yeah I think it’s silly i mean Clayton Kerso is still on the mound 10 years later still doing his thing still an effective pitcher i I think just was silly you got to him silly but but hurtful and also uh not sportsmanlike and I think that’s not like the Cardinals not like the Cardinals that’s the one thing I would disagree with i I don’t think that’s like the Cardinals i agree with I disagree with with Kers on yeah because he did add that it was Bush League and that’s something you know he was just trying to get back at him i get it his feelings were hurt i’m with him right 99% yeah just that right i think they are normally very classy and that’s why they stand out as the classless thing all right next what warrants an ejection at home plate what can you say what can’t you say i think there’s some new rules here nico her of the Cubs the home plate umpire is Derek Thomas watch what he says here after taking strike three got to listen to this really [Music] bad he’s he’s explaining to Greg Couch like he’s his dad dad I only said he’s having a really bad day now in in the umpire’s defense he did say you’re really having a bad day not just having a bad day but come on come on that’s that you no that that’s that you’re too sensitive the umpire is too sensitive now you can say one thing you say one thing and then after that you cross the line but give him one thing especially he didn’t curse he’s being reasonably polite come on well I mean technically you’re not supposed to argue balls and strikes but his claim and he is a Stanford man so I probably should defer to him on this is that he really didn’t argue balls and strikes he was just assessing his full day not arguing that one ball and strike now that was a mis call but I will point out as Al Lighter did mention he only missed five calls all day so he was not It was incorrect what he said he was not having a really bad day he was actually having a really good day so actually right what But I’m with you you can’t You can’t throw him out what Derek Thomas should do so actually goes I’ve been checking on my iPad i’m having an excellent day the umpires you know a disadvantage they can’t do that but the players can see and I don’t know why he thought he was having a bad He did say so far maybe he picked it up because eventually he ended up with you know what would be good if if the own plate umpire said too he said “Hey by the way so are you.” No he can’t he’s an impartial observer no he can’t do that but I’d rather I’d rather he tweak him back like manto man rather than throwing him out of the game i will say this if he’s just cursing at him it’s easier to take that than somebody an intelligent player than Seth telling you having a really bad offering a valid i would be more hurt about that if someone curses at me I could take it a little more easily than that cuz No you’re right you’re figuring oh my god am I really I’m messing up this game i’m screwing up right right actually right him offering what seemed to be a reasonable critique was more hurtful than saying you’re bleep bleep bleep bleep where you’re way so I kind of see that but yeah the game is about the players it’s not about the umpire although he was having a really good day right also I believe do you’re you’re not entitled to abuse an umpire but was he abusing him and the answer is kind of no he was not abusing him all right so I don’t know if we agreed or disagreed but we had a good conversation i think so these are fascinating things you have to know the protocol all right when we come back talk the good i’m sorry this may hurt [Music] got a whole lot of ugly in my sights now I’m angry [Music] watch this thank you [Music] [Music] this way high time i love a challenge light becomes [Music] holy light becomes holy [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] i love a challenge a whole lot of ugly in my sight [Music] is under attack [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] darkness to darkness light to light [Music] [Music] that’s out [Music] this way [Music] [Music] perfect [Music] falling [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]
