Stephven Jones likely wants to have somebody the reason he can be had at the price that Stephven Jones likely wants to be able to have somebody is because of his injury history over the last two seasons John Alexander has only played seven games in each season he’s played 14 games combined over the last two years this is not much more of an upgrade than what we experienced with Trevon Diggs actually they may have played damn near the same amount of games as each other because Diggs went out I believe in December of last season played most of the year but missed the entire year before run towards his side so just like any great chess player bro you got to give guys times to make a strategy to counter that so I think Micah did a good job with seeing how teams were doing seeing where he was failing at on the run game keeping backside contained whatever it may have been and he went and addressed a lot of that stuff but I think that schematically the defense just I don’t think the scheme helped him a lot with run defense right i don’t think the scheme help so I think that if the coaches we got are worth their salt I’m not gonna sit here and say I think it’s gonna be fixed and all because we still need to see all this stuff on the field bro but if the coaches we got are worth their salt um if the moves that we’ve made are the right moves to supplement what the coaches need to run their scheme specifically Matt Eberloose and the type of front that he has i think we’re going to stop the run bro matt Eberlu has stopped the run everywhere he’s been so I think that we’re able to be dominant bro but Aaron Donald is one of the best players in NFL history that is not the blueprint you follow to try to get a nose tackle that’s serviceable in your own scheme bro that’s what they tried to do to me they tried to match up Mazy Smith’s physical traits because Mazy Smith physically is very similar to how Aaron Donald is built but he just doesn’t he’s not the same type of player content creator yeah and so you keep it real whenever I see him out there my pick would be like so hard because he because I play Dline too like maybe he played DN and and I actually know that at some point but but like but for me I always like I get so upset with M’s work ethic on that side which which you do have a point he probably was drafted to be to play the wrong position his work ethic because Mazy Smith looks like he’s in damn good shape he looked like he stay in the wait room that and that that’s the thing he looked It’s like he looks like he’s in good shape but every time I see him play he’s always I never see him firing off the ball correctly i want to be a better three tech you think M would be a better three tech than than playing one or zero i think he would be a better tech in the NFL i ain’t going to lie i think he’d be better getting up field than he would trying to be a gap stuffer he would I think I think she he’d be a serviceable guy at that position most likely just not at the nose because like one you also had you had you even had men Joseph out there boding guys out there which you you need a bigger body in at the nose you’re not getting better with Mazi that’s that’s the problem with it ain’t even a problem with Mazi I think that’s the dilemma with Mazy Smith is again he was drafted at a premium spot in the first round to play out of position damn near for what they needed him to do at the NFL level i understand at Michigan he played defensive tackle and he was able to be a two gap guy michigan all that i understand that but this is the NFL bro and I don’t I I mean you can look at M you can look at his tape even if you go back to college to me he’s he’s better served getting up field bro he’s better served not trying to play on his heels he’s better served getting up field yeah i feel like if you were to put him in like the Steve Spagnola defense he’d probably tear some boys up man you know yeah dav I understand he’s never done the three tech i don’t think he’s done it in the NFL but I just think that physically like from physically speak cuz cuz those tackles three texts one text if you playing five and you way out way all these dudes are built differently that’s that’s the that’s the point of having those those distinctions in positions is each position requires a different body type bro it requires a different body type and a different skill set so I think Mazy Smith’s body type is more detrimental to him being able to be successful at that specific position i think that he would actually probably be more disruptive getting upfield more or even if they just used him as a one more and kept them in a more of an attacking front which is Ibraflute’s defense is more of an attacking front maybe we’ll see him trying to get up field at that one but I I don’t He He can’t play the zebra he cannot consistently play zero tech in the NFL you can’t have him lined up over center in the NFL you can’t do that yeah and so like I even like saw classes of of like his rookie year like we were playing we were playing Philly in in Philadelphia one time and he was he was um stuffing up the middle pretty decently but but still you know it’s obviously the Eagles line or whatever but anyway but when when Mike Zimmerman told him to that he needs to be I was like bro no that’s not going to like his body type even if you gain weight at that if you’re not fit to that position that’s still not going to help you know because we see you seen Mazy on tape when you seen Mazy on tape last year his biggest problem was first of all he found problems anytime he found himself having to move left or right anytime he had to move laterally and and and and still maintain his gap integrity he was getting thrown off the spot cuz he’s not big enough bro he’s not big enough and I think he was playing with bad leverage bro i don’t think he’s playing with his head pad height and that’s why you’re seeing Azie dare and they run the ball his way because they know he can’t stop the run right you know right and it’s just and it’s just like you know every time I I watch him play he played I mean he’s honestly player uh per position on how they stop the run or whatnot the run stop percentage and we just like we could exactly we like completely suck he was saying that the defense is we don’t the Cowboys don’t have a mazi problem we just we had a coaching problem yeah I can I can agree with that i can That’s why that’s I was kind of telling the last caller i can agree with that i think that schematically the defense wasn’t necessarily set up to stop the run you know what I’m saying i don’t I don’t think the defense was actually set up to stop the run um right yeah I could agree with that i can agree with that so do you think that Matt Ephra Flu Eert Flu will be able to change that i mean I know in Absolutely 23 Yes he had a the the 12th ranked defense in the NFL don’t just look at the Bears don’t even just look at the Bears what you do is so when you’re looking at coaches and you’re trying to figure out how good are they as a coordinator what I like to do is what I like to do is I’ll go back first thing you look at is obviously how did they rank in the league in their position right but when you’re looking at how they rank I always take that first season that they came out and I take the fir the last season that they left out and then I look at what their actual rankings were i look at that meat of their tenure and see what their actual rankings were because that first season a coach goes to a team you’re implementing a scheme you’re finding you’re getting players to fit that scheme you it is really unrealistic to expect a coach to have his unit up to speed all the way and comfortable within the scheme in that first season so to me that’s the that’s the introduction year right i don’t I don’t hold that year against coaches and I don’t count it for them either you know what I’m saying i really don’t uh the last season obviously the last season a coach was at a team he going to get fired so a coach’s last season is always usually going to be their worst season at a spot so I don’t count those i always look at the middle if you look at the middle of what Ibra Flu has done with the Colts and the Bears with the Bears he was able to have a top run defense with the Colts he was able to have a top run defense about top it was like top five you know what I’m saying so in two different organizations he’s shown that he can create his scheme does kind of uh what word am I looking what’s that damn word man what’s that word his scheme damn [ __ ] i don’t even want to talk no more you got it you are bro nah no but yeah I I feel what you’re saying man i feel what you’re saying and I think that if he bring us if he bring that energy and he bring and he can scheme our players and put them in the right position like Osa was saying like he he seen a a few a few uh plays where he he could have he could have had it if it was schemed differently you know what I mean but you know what he meant you know you know what Osa was saying when he was talking about that he was talking about Okay so have y’all been hearing them talk about how Matt Ebra is using an attacking front okay i think Zimmer’s scheme taught the Dline more so to play gaps and to Okay uh it taught them more so to play gaps and to play responsibilities matt Ilu’s defensive front is more about attacking the football just in general it’s an attack the football defensive front so in Zimmer’s defensive front you would see guys being more so gap stuffers and supposed post to hold gaps so their linebackers will be able to make plays keep the big guys off the linebackers so the linebackers make plays and I flu’s defense his defensive front are the playmaker he want those guys trying to make plays and the linebackers are clean up right the linebackers are clean up and and and they’re used in different way they’re versatile so he’ll have some guys dropping some coverage he’ll have some linebackers trying to cover that middle part of the field in the flat he’ll have he you you you’ll see the difference just in how the defensive line is what they’re instructed to do with their responsibilities i think what Osa was saying was there was times where he knows he could have made a play but he would have been jumping out of the confines of what the scheme was asking him to do to do that right playing Superman ball he would have been playing Superman ball to do that which is something Michael kind of brought up a little bit last season i think he was talking about Donovan Wilson spoiler alert i think Michael Wilson was talking about I think Michael Parsons was talking about Donovan Wilson when he was talking about dudes going out there and playing Superman football because you can tell there are times where Donovan Wilson might have been responsible for back tie container or or covering a gap or something and he was just not in the right spot bro he was not in the right spot so I think he’s about uh Donovan Wilson right there bro but I think that that’s going to be the main difference is this defensive front is is they’re they see ball attack ball now the problem with that type of front and and the positive side of what Zimmer’s front does when you’re just a gap contained defensive front the problem with a attacking the ball type of front is misdirection can [ __ ] you up so play actions uh RPO stuff like that anything that’s misdirection it can [ __ ] you up because the guys their only responsibility as soon as the ball is snapped is to attack the football right and if you’re thinking the ball is going wrong going somewhere it’s not you’re gonna you’re you’re out that play you just took yourself completely out the play so that’s the one drawback to Ibra Fluss’s defensive front is it can leave guys in situations because it’s it’s needing guys to be able to recognize the ball it can leave guys in situations where they’re taken out of the plays so that that is one of the problems okay so so speaking of Micah are you um would you say would you be comfortable with him playing linebacker on run plays and in on pass plays yes okay yes okay i would I would as long as he’s as long as he’s still going downhill um I I’m at a point now where I think that we have enough linebackers where you don’t necessarily need Michael to play in a coverage type of role at linebacker but as long as he’s going downhill and attacking then yeah I think it’s fine for him to play linebacker i think at times on rundowns I think getting him off that line will actually help the Cowboys more because Michael is going to be the fastest guy on the field more times than not his sideline sideline speed is out of this world and I just think that when you’re free of having to uh have that initial contact with an offensive line as soon as the ball is snapped he’ll have more opportunity to make plays you know what I’m saying whether it be chasing [ __ ] down from the backside or beating guys to a spot I think he’ll have more opportunity to make plays now the problem there is that takes a little bit more film room study that takes a little bit more game tape that takes a little bit more of the mental aspect of the game because now you need more play recognition you’re not just trying to beat guys based off of your physical traits now you’re having to beat the offense based off what you know about what they’re about to do so that’s the problem with having Michael play linebackers if he’s not committed to learning that aspect of the position then you don’t need him there because he’s going to probably be a net negative right so and you have guys like uh Jack Samborn Kenneth Murray Jr um with Dearon Overson gets back you got Maris Leah FA I think your linebacker room is probably the deepest linebacker room you’ve had as a cowboy in could end up being Brian Shimer’s biggest impact on this team and organization in the immediate future is the level of discipline i think that’s the one thing that can change overnight is the level of gentlemen let’s get into today’s second half of the show i wanted to take a look at this article that was written by Cody Warren on June 5th um and he said “Five Cowboys trade targets to help fix the terrible run defense.” Now y’all brought up that statistic that Brian Bruce mentioned about the run stop percentage of all of our defensive linemen and just kind of how putrid that actually is these are some guys that can immediately come in and have an instant impact on the Dallas Cowboys defensive line to the point to where they can have at least at minimum a serviceable run game and you can feel from a uh roster standpoint you have the the the proper pieces in place and I thought this was a pretty interesting article i just kind of glazed over it a little bit and we’re gonna go ahead and get into this one man so shout out to the homie Cody Warren the Dallas Cowboys are entered the 2025 NFL season with renewed urgency the need to improve the run defense must be a top priority despite an explosive offense and a fearsome edge rush led by Michael Parsons the Cowboys finished 29th in run defense in 2024 surrendering over 137 rushing yards per game so right there off rip I can guarantee y’all i can guarantee we going to have a better run game than we did last season at minimum at minimum we going to have a better run game than we did last season cuz you damn near can’t get any worse and if you did that mean that I don’t know man if we get worse than that run defense i don’t know what to say bro we going to have to have some drastic measures get get brought up cuz that’s ridiculous all right while resigning defensive tackle Osa Dazu was a smart move the Cowboys can’t rely solely on in-house talent with new defensive coordinator Matt Eberlu now leading the charge Dallas must look at the trade market to solidify the interior line and bring stability to the defensive front here are five defensive tackles the Cowboys could target via trade to strengthen their run defense the first target is Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Derek Brown okay Derek Brown is a dream target and is one of the league’s premier run stuffers his presence would immediately transform the Cowboys defensive line the 2023 Pro Bowler a torn meniscus kept him out in 2024 finished with over a 100 tackles and consistently commanded double team freeing up linebackers to flow to the ball the Panthers are rebuilding and may be willing to listen to offers for veterans like Brown in exchange for draft capital pairing him with Oso Diggiza will give Dallas one of the best defensive tackle tandemss in the NFL here’s a trade cost estimate um and he estimates it will cost a 2026 second round pick plus a 2026 fourth round pick now as we’re going through these I want y’all to keep in mind the cost and I want y’all to let me know down in the comments below for each guy or in the chat let me know would you do that trade would you make that move so Derek Brown of the Carolina Panthers that is a dream that’s 100% a dream i don’t think that’s a realistic target at all um I don’t think there’s been many reports about Carolina wanting to move off of a Derek Brown but if he became available I I mean I think that that right there could absolutely be one of those pieces that sends your defense over the top for real for real that’s that’s one of the premier uh nose tackles in the league so that would be a damn good pickup grover Stewart however is a realistic target and this is one of those guys I believe Grover Stewart is one of those guys that is on June 1st cut watch right i think he’s one of those guys that’s liable to mess around and get cut by the Colts depending on what direction they want to go with the organization remember the Indianapolis Colts they just lost their owner so there’s possibility that there’s going to be some changing going on there’s going to be some change over there’s going to be guys moving in and out and and there’s probably going to be a new leadership in place there so Grover Stewart is somebody I definitely keep an eye on remember Matt Ille coached with the Indianapolis Colts and he is a nose tackle he’s a true nose tackle who excels at clogging the running lanes he brings size toughness and experience exactly the traits Cowboys defense has lacked on the interior with Matt Eberflu now calling plays in Dallas it’s worth noting that Stewart played under Eberlu during his time as Colts defensive coordinator i just said that that familiarity could make him an ideal target for the Cowboys scheme which emphasizes discipline and gap integrity all right so very very interesting right there and I will say this that front is more of an attacking front i don’t think it’s more of a I don’t think it’s as much of a gap integrity front is is more of an attacking front zimmer’s front was more so gap integrity based but the trade cost estimate for a Grover Stewart would be a 2025 fourth round pick and again I think this is one of those guys you kind of keep an eye on and see if the Colts end up making a surprise move or cut one of these guys cuz I would absolutely go after Grover Stewart and I think again that would be somebody that could absolutely help the Cowboys in what they need to do all right next up we have DJ Reer from the Detroit Lions the Lions added DJ Reer in free agency in 2024 but their depth at defensive tackle especially with Alien McNeil’s emergence might make Reer available for the right offer he’s a highle run defender who excels in early downs and short yardage situations reer fits the mode of a Matt Everlu style interior lineman high motor strong at the point of attack and technically sound he would help Dallas stop the run on first down and force teams into obvious passing situations and they think the trade cost estimate here will be a 2026 six round pick and Brock Hoffman oh that right there is very very very very interesting because how many teams in the NFL have guys that can come in and and have already proven that they can be a starting quality NFL center brock Hoffman has and guess who the Detroit Lions just lost an allp pro center in Ragnau right the Arkansas product they lost him in Frank Ragnau so now they need an offensive line to help to help bolster that running based team that running based offensive attack and that is a very interesting interesting thing to kind of float there um as far as Brock Hoffman and a sixth round pick for DJ Reed I think that that type of move would maybe help the Cowboys in the immediate future and because of how your offensive line is set up now I don’t really see Brock Hoffman um realistically having a path to becoming a starter for the Cowboys long term so instead of just stashing him as a as a highv value depth piece you could flip him for somebody to come in and fill a position of knee and be pretty damn good at it so that that right there that right there is very very interesting i wouldn’t be mad at it i mean I know people get attached to our our players and you know people get to that oh I don’t want to trade any of these guys but I mean Brock Hoffman man hey if we can get DJ Reer for Brock Hoffman I’m doing that seven times out of seven seven days a week i’m doing that all right so that right there would probably be my leader in a clubhouse right now as it pertains to guys to go out and get next up we have David Onyada this is another very interesting one he doesn’t necessarily have to be a trade candidate he and the other defensive tackle that plays with the Atlanta Falcons right now they are on June 1st cutwatch i don’t know why I just said Falcons right now i just said that boy i don’t know my ancestors came out uh but both of those guys are cutwatch candidates and he David Anyamada being he could end up being somebody the Cowboys don’t even have to trade for they could end up actually signing him via free agency because I know before the offseason started he and I think Grady Jarrett were both cut candidates for the Atlanta Falcons so I would look at either one of those guys and be like “All right could could these guys help my defensive line?” All right so David Onyada is a realistic trade target and after a down year in Atlanta he was pegged as a cut candidate see but the player cut was Grady Jared atlanta which is still in rebuild mode could look to acquire draft assets to fill the needs across the roster dallas could make the call for Anyamada based off his run stopping prowess he would be the type of player the Cowboys front office looks for as a lowc cost high upside type of player the Falcons have depth at defensive tackle so getting draft picks for a player who may not be in a long-term plans could be perfect both sides and again I think this is one of those situations if you’re going to go out and get one of these type of guys you’re going to go out and trade for somebody I would love a Grover Stewart because the familiarity there with the system and he he would have a clear understanding of what Matt needs him to do to make that defense successful and because Grover Stewart did play under Matt Eberlu and Matt was with Indianapolis Grover Stewart has been a part of a top ranked run defense so I love the Grover Stewart matchup right now that’s my favorite one out of all five of these so far and then we got Leki Fu a lowprofile target lucky Fu could provide the Cowboys with a rotational depth at a bargain he has shown flashes as a run defender and offers the kind of physical pres presence Dallas has been missing in the middle fau would be a smart lowrisk addition to add depth behind Osa Digisa and possibly supplant Mazy Smith as the run stopper under Eberflu he could thrive in a gap disciplined rotational role the trade cost estimate would either be a 20256 or seventh round pick and those trades would probably be evened out by what they would get back u by way of comp picks they’re right now they’re slated to get comp picks for Jordan Lewis and Demarcus Lawrence I believe i think maybe Chanty Goldston i think they’re slated to get like maybe two or three comp picks right now so those picks right there are kind of marginal picks they’re marginal costs that you would have to give up and I like honestly I like all these options leky Fo I believe was the guy he used to play with the Was he the guy he used to play with the Jets i think so i think he was a nose tackle with the Jets he just signed with the Raiders this off season I believe but to me the best options off this list are easily
