Minicamp Competition, Recapping Position Coaches Perspectives | Jags A.M. | Jacksonville Jaguars

electric Center three days this week that we will see the guys out there getting ready for this offseason program or getting into this offseason program we saw some pretty great turnout during OTAAS but of course just a little bit different this is the mandatory portion welcome in i’m Kanani Stevens brian Sexton and John Oer are with me today as we’re going to talk things out big thing number one is it’s mandatory mini camp now not a ton different Brian from OTAAS and we have seen pretty good turnout but you do have to be here and after this offseason you definitely want to be a part of this and that’s why we saw such good turnout earlier as well yeah that’s really the only difference is the word mandatory and that the veterans are required to be here i I think in recent years we’ve seen coaching staffs cancel these or turn them off on the third day i’ll be interested to see Liam’s approach my guess is is that they’ll practice all three days because in this transition there has been a lot to get done John and a lot that the coaches want to see before they switch it off until training camp at the what the third week of July yeah so it’s mandatory so let the record show we’re here so we’re covered uh and that’s really the only difference it’s still unpatted work 11 on 111 it’s more competitive than it was before OTAAS began other than that’s what it is um I don’t expect them to back off this week because I feel like they’ve had a plan that it’s involved 13 onfield practices to get uh ready i think Thursdays may be a smidge shorter beyond that it’s uh it’s it’s OTAAS which is learning not much evaluating and uh trying to get ready for training camp um our second big thing today is going to be runaway we look at different position groups this time of year and some new faces we’ve seen a lot of new faces added to this roster their running back room is one that’s going to look a lot different compared to last year John we’ve seen a lot of additions and I feel like this could be one of the most competitive groups in terms of what we see in training camp going into the season yeah I’d put it with uh you know offensive line in terms of uh the competitive level uh look this team wants to run it feels like there is such an emphasis on it usually teams that really really emphasize it uh run better than the teams that don’t uh there’s a will thing in the NFL there’s a stick to it i think they’re going to stick to it in uh in talking to offensive line coach Sean uh Sean Serret last week he doesn’t doubt that it’s going to be a tough offensive line emphasis on run blocking um so once we get there then we will see the running backs come into play and I do think it’s competitive and I think Bay Shel Tutin has a chance to start you know um they have to get better at it and if they do I I think it portends to an opportunity to get right back into the thick of the AFC South with Houston they’re an inability guy to convert on third and short really has cost this offense i’m really interested in this room i and I know what you’ve said about Toutin and I know what happened last year in Tampa the guy that I’m interested the most in is Travis ETN because of of what he said and I know this is the time of year where you can say almost anything and it all sounds so trit and wrote in so many cases but you have such competition in that room now i mean he has to be motivated by his circumstances final year of his deal he’s clearly as a former first round pick the most talented guy in the room and the guy who has provided and proved that he can provide touchdowns and yards and big plays well we we’ve watched Big be unable to pull away from him in recent years and now we know what Toutton’s impact could be john mentioned he might start this year i think Travis ETN is is X factor call it what you want but a guy who could give this team a lot this year if things line up for him and we’ll certainly be motivated in that contract year and maybe a little more involvement in the passing game coming up as well our final big thing camp competition we talked about the running back group that’s obviously going to be competitive but Brian when you’re looking elsewhere on the roster what’s another position group where you feel like there’s going to be some great competition come camp well I think the middle of that defensive line to listen to the defensive line staff last week talk about Eric Armstead moving back inside and what they’ve seen and heard from him since those guys aren’t in full pads but what I what I gathered last week asking Josh Hines Allen about Mason Smith is that he’s worked hard he’s been uh coachable teachable and that his motivation level is very high he understands what’s at stake for him in his career in year two and then you mix in Devon Hamilton and and Jordan Jefferson there’s a lot to like about the inside of this defensive line group if they all come to play john yeah um where will we see competition uh where to start i think it’s going to be a lot i think a left tackle Walker Little Fred Johnson all over the offensive line running back uh I think safety with Andrew Wingard and uh Caleb Ransaw uh the outside corner on the other side i’m not sure it’s competition as much as trying to figure out when and where Travis Hunter will line up how Jordan Lewis will complement that linebackers all over the place this is uh you know I think the guys that people have penciled in the veteran guys most of them probably start but it’s going to be interesting and I don’t think all of the guys that people are penciling in will start so it’s going to be a good camp i think it’s going to evolve as it goes along which will be exciting for us to see so stay with us here on Jags Am we’ll have more live views of mandatory mini camp coming up after the break hi my name is Charlie Jordan and I’m the manager of social media for the Jacksonville Jaguars so as manager of social media we serve as a bridge between the dirty work so you don’t have to remember when you’re stuck call the duck today’s episode of Jagam brought to you by Fresh from Florida it is always in season a big part of that is Travis he puts in the work like I said he loves football um and when you got guys like that that truly love what they do you know we we make the we make the time to get everything that we need accomplished done each and every day and I think um I think that’s something that he’ll just continue to get better at we’ll continue to get better at as far as making sure that we make the most of every opportunity that we get so whatever meeting it might be whatever time we get out on the field or it’s a walk through we just make sure we maximize the moment edgar Bennett weighing in on Travis Hunter who works with the wide receivers a lot more than he’s been working with the defense so far from what we’ve seen but always good things whenever he’s on either side of the football he’s fun to watch it’s hard not to have your eyes on him and what’s interesting is how many eyes are on him i have not been on Brian Thomas Jr you know talking to people they’re like “Oh I forgot about Brian Thomas Jr don’t forget about him.” Well I’m sure that’s what coach is hoping people will do is forget about BTJ but I don’t know if they Wouldn’t that be fantastic next year if they just single high yeah right btj try that out well it is remarkable after the rookie season that Brian Thomas Jr had that your first round draft pick could overwhelm that could be a bigger story than that in the spring i if you had said to me last fall that that was possible or last spring I wouldn’t have thought it would be but doesn’t it feel Brian and like we’ve covered this a while um certain guys are quiet in the off season i’m to the point where I I would be stunned if he’s not a 1400 yard guy next year i think he’s going to have an explosion you’re talking about Travis Hunter and BTJ just feels like more of a I’m not going to say guaranteed but it if he’s not an allp prolevel guy uh and the best player on the offense outside Trevor Lawrence next year I’d be surprised that’s no knock on Travis Hunter i just think Travis is going to be the explosive make a play but consistency what makes this offense run i think it’s going to be number seven i was talking to a friend of mine who is a scout in the NFC and he told me he thought that Brian Thomas Jr could be Jamar Chase he could be Justin Jefferson he could be that oh my god how do we stop this guy how do we match up with this guy 14,500 yard guy whatever he wants and and he doesn’t say very much again I get the idea that BTJ might be just fine with not having the midweek spotlight on him and not doing the pressers and then uh being on NFL prime time every Sunday night at night catching balls and being able to talk on the field so uh he may flourish in this because I don’t get me wrong I think he likes like anybody in the NFL the recognition of being great but I don’t necessarily think he needs the midweek stuff and I think what’s cool and and what I’ve seen in his evolution is it now looks really easy to him he always looked athletic he always looked like he was learning and getting better as things went along but now it looks like it’s old routine already which is interesting to see in a second year player because you don’t always see it picked up that quickly and it’s now to the point where I expect him to do crazy things i don’t I’m not as awed by it because that is who he is i said to somebody the other day last year he was adjusting to the National Football League to playing on Sundays this year the National Football League will adjust to him yeah I think it’s going to be I think you’re going to see accelerated and he was good last year don’t get me wrong but I think you’re going to see um as good as he was last year most rookies outside of the running back position aren’t close to having the field vision or the awareness in the moment that they will in the future i’m not saying Brian Thomas wasn’t good in those areas last year but it usually accelerates you learn what you didn’t know as a rookie so it’s it’s uh it’s exciting stuff and he is when you look at national rankings and all that stuff which I love that kind of stuff Brian yeah I know you top three top five you see him mentioned but there’s often not he’s still sort of a well-kept secret nationally it in a way so I think the secret will be out soon so we got to talk to some of the position coaches last week which is exciting for us because it’s new staff so kind of getting to know them a little bit and um John loves to talk to an O line coach so Sean Sarah had a lot it was fun um they always have a lot to say and he talked a little bit about the competition on the line and what he’s expecting out of Walker Little whatever position he ends up at to solidify and and go in there and be you know a 17 game starter for multiple years and you know and that’s what we see in him and Anton they’re both they’re both capable of going to either spot and they’re both capable of starting 17 games for us going into the playoffs playing in these big games and it’s very helpful we brought guys in that have been in these situations a guy like Patrick McCary who comes in you know he’s been kind of like a glue guy around with the Ravens who’s played all these positions and he’s played in all these big games and he he just you know it doesn’t matter if a guy goes down you’re going to move him over and he’s not going to bat an eye i can go play it which is interesting you know and it’ll be good for those guys john I feel like this regime is definitely doing the offensive line differently because they’re bringing in young players yes but also a lot of veterans that have played multiple positions so that the depth will be players that can plug and play in different spots yeah he was asked last week what like the def what the defining trait of the offensive line will be i think it was going to be many the one he chose to speak about was versatility because there are so many guys who can play different spots uh as an offensive line coach they love that he mentioned usually O line coaches are looking for the fourth guy who can snap you know uh offensive line coaches are always trying to figure out if they have enough centers because at some point if guys get hurt you can’t start the play without a center uh but he said they have plenty of those he was also interesting in uh he has zero doubt that even though they haven’t seen it in OTAAS yet this is going to be a tough group that can run block uh the emphasis on that area is is something every team says they emphasize it uh the previous regime really had the attitude Brian of they were going to run when the run was there but they weren’t going to overpower the opponent i think these guys may be a team that runs even when you know it’s coming there’s a difference in philosophy there and I think you’re going to see an improvement in the running game because of it i went back and watched a lot of the the Buccaneers games this off seasonason and I I I love the way they run if that’s the approach man it’s going to be fun to watch this group and I think because we’ve talked about it ad nauseium that they will be much more successful on third down and short uh offensive line coaches and you remember Mike Mer i mean these guys they’re just a different breed they’re just the the way that they talk and and the intensity with which they speak um I just I love listening to them and I think the thing that stands out the most about this group was what they said in the early days and that is what you think will happen or should happen probably won’t if I was commissioner for a day which everybody wants uh I would have offensive line coaches in addition to the coordinators talk to the media every week because they really are the um beyond those two if you think about it they’re usually the story line now I don’t think most offensive line coaches would want to do that they like being in the cave and uh but I think when you can talk to them and get a feel for their position group it’s uh often as valuable as the coordinators so it’s project make it happen make it happen oer says so um we got to talk to quarterback’s coach Spencer Whipple as well a lot of talk about Trevor learning this new system but a lot of the focus has actually been on Trevor’s footwork and what he’s seen from him so far it takes a you know a downloading process it takes a playing on the field those reps that come up in terms of practice um and he’s done a great job of the self-evaluation piece saying right away hey I I did feel a little bit quick here maybe I can you know sit on this a little bit more and let BT work so whatever it may be um and I think that’s just goes back to his his approach in terms of growing and getting better each day he he he that’s his main focus and that’s what he’s done and that’s why it’s been such a such a pleasure to work with him Brian Trevor himself has said he wanted to work on his footwork all the reports back at this point are that it’s been going quite well and just the improvement as things have gone along i guess we’ll find out i mean I don’t think we’re going to find out anything this week about it uh you know get to what in the preseason he plays and it I to me I won’t be watching his feet i don’t know what I’m looking at specifically but I’ll be watching his comfort level when he hits that back foot and according to coach Cohen and and the entire offensive staff that deals with the passing game his decision-m and his ability to calmly make a play is all based on his footwork i guess that’s the only way we can judge it yeah i’ve gotten a lot of questions people saying “Well exactly what are they doing with his footwork?” I don’t think we’ll ever know cuz they’re not going to sit there and discuss well on his left foot has to be at this angle a we want it this inch but I I think the thing to uh take away that they’re doing is it’s as much timing as it is footwork from my understanding meaning Liam Con has has talked about it often and Spencer did too they just want the footwork to dictate the decision making and make it feel as reflexive perhaps of this is where the decision is going to be they want to take as much thinking out of it as possible and uh Liam keeps on talking about it it’s it’s a gray game they want as many things to be black and white so on the decisions that he has to make there’s a clearer head making it so uh I probably didn’t explain it well enough right there it’s not an easy thing to to explain but that’s the spirit of it is trying to have the footwork dictate the decisions so that anything you can do to make it a little easier in the pocket is going to help to me accuracy everything there because you’re just better when you’re more comfortable it’s about making him comfortable and and the bedrock of of comfort is knowing where you’re supposed to be and where when you’re supposed to be there and the footwork is all part of that um let’s check in quickly i do want to talk about the defense obviously coach Campanelli has been um one of the newer faces very prominent i just feel like his personality is very strong which is great for the players and they’ve really taken to him um I know Josh Allen has talked about it but um Bill Sheridan one of the defensive assistants talked a little bit about his work with camp at BC and how he’s grown in those years since he was at Boston College you know even when he was at BC you know super like passionate and uh and a very good football coach but when I I came back here you know I’ve been here I don’t know maybe eight weeks and uh you know the nice thing is he has been around outstanding defensive coaches in the National Football League brian Flores Mc Banjo Jeff Hafley and so in the time I’ve been here even like I say like the first I don’t know 3 weeks here I was like whoa this guy has been paying attention and his football IQ was skyrocketed john I remember Josh Hines Allen speaking last week he said you know how much he’s enjoying working with this new staff and uh these are coaches you want to lay your body on the line for or believe is the direct quote he used but um that’s high praise that’s not something they just say well a couple things about camp i don’t pretend to know him very well i talked to him a couple of times face to face couple times off the record when he first got here um but Sheridan it was interesting talking about him because you got the impression that Sheridan knew very quickly some people were put on this earth to coach a lot of people coach a lot of people are successful at it but this guy was meant to do it and uh there there’s no doubt that Sheridan thinks that camp and know he’s going to be an NFL head coach and knew he’s going to be a great coordinator the most interesting thing about camp uh I interviewed him one of the first days he got here turned the recorder off and I asked him about his scheme and this is off the record but I don’t think he’ll mind me sharing this um and he he kind of scoffed and you know we talked about scheme a bit and he goes “You know John scheme’s fine it’s how much these guys know you believe in him.” And that resonated so much in every player you talk to about him that’s the first thing they say um he’s meant to do this after last year these players clearly believe that this guy is in their corner uh this guy is cares about him and uh I’d be really surprised if there’s not a pretty significant um I don’t know about stats but you’re going to see a difference in the defense i hope so cuz last year we all do it was so bad um I can’t add much on camp other than I I love what Josh Hines Allen said last week when he smiled and said he’s a lot uh great i mean that’s exactly what I want to hear i can add something about Bill Sheridan a former Jaguars assistant coach once coached with Bill Sheridan at Michigan and look you know these older veteran guys that come in and there have been a number of them through the years nobody pays a whole lot of attention to him but this coach called me when Sheridan was hired and said “That guy will make a big difference with a firsttime defensive coordinator.” So to see Bill Sheridan and to listen to him last week and to to hear him talk about Campanelli and the way that he coaches um that’s good credibility i like the sorry Brian the interesting thing that when I was sitting with Sheridan uh even beyond Campanelli as a play caller he uh kind of gushed is the right word but couldn’t say enough about how the players are responding to camp um and in the NFL that’s everything if these guys don’t believe in you you got no chance and these guys believe in this coordinator can’t fake that that’s for sure stay with us here on Jagam camp underway first of three days here um not a ton different from OTAAS but you do have to be here that’s mandatory so we’re going to check in on some of the other teams around the AFC South we’ve already talked about the Titans and the Colts so now it’s time to check in on the Texans they’re having mandatory mini camp this week as well and so far CJ Strad has not been throwing we’ll see what happens in mini camp obviously that’s maybe a little more onus on him participating but they’re being a little dodgy about it demo Ryan said it’s just you know general soreness and kind of deflected and got a little fidgety when the media was asking him about it so I’m curious he gets beat up a lot he was sacked a ton last a ton 56 is a ton a literal ton physically metaphorically we’re making it up anyway he gets sacked all the time i’m not surprised he was banged up probably a lot of stuff goes off in the offseason but at this point to not be throwing is interesting to me because as we saw you know Trevor had a an offseason surgery early obviously not his throwing shoulder but still and to be at this point and not be throwing with your team I did my spidey senses are going off well part of that obviously Anthony Richardson up in in Indianapolis who has shoulder issues after complaining of soreness and they don’t know when he’s going to be ready to play but here’s the interesting part they just they overhauled everything john in Houston the offensive line is different they traded Laram Tonsil they bring in Cam Robinson he’s not the only offensive lineman stfan Diggs is now in New England tank Dell is not likely to play this year let alone be able to practice at any point in the future and they fired Bobby Slowick and they brought in Nick Cali to be the offensive coordinator from Los Angeles i mean so much is different you’d want to have your quarterback throwing even on a pitch count at this point to get the most out of his reps before camp begins yeah if I’m a Texans fan I’m I’m probably not panicking over all that because a lot of teams change stuff at the same time uh it’s for Stout not to be throwing in mini camp uh maybe there’s nothing wrong but it’s fair for people to uh to wonder why because he was good last year but I don’t think he made the jump that they expected i mean we all saw as a rookie and you expected sort of an acceleration it didn’t really happen so u I would think obvious if if Trevor wasn’t throwing it would be the A block Block problem of this show so in perspective that’s certainly something to watch um for a starting quarterback not to throw in mini game and we should mention as well because he’s got some new targets he’s throwing to obviously Nico Collins probably out for the year but Christian Kirk a familiar face to us is now in Houston and you know he’s not throwing with his starting quarterback obviously Christian Kirk’s a vet he’ll be fine but when you add some new additions to the offense it’s we know it’s big for Trevor Lawrence to be working with his new receiver so you’d imagine CJ Strad would want to do the same but um I hope Christian Kirk is healthy we’ll see what he can bring to that team down there but um it’ll be interesting to see him in a Texans uniform yeah and uh I think most people watch this show many many players come through here where you think “Okay they’re gone it’s fine.” Christian is a guy everybody liked i I hope he can have personal success without Texan success my guess is if if if you really pulled Christian aside and said “Where would you love I I think he would have loved to have been here with Trevor with this team I I think he liked this franchise a lot uh circumstances don’t always allow you to finish your career where you want to but uh good luck to him he’s a great kid.” Cat figure was $27 million it it goes that way um Nico Collins will be CJ Strad’s favorite target cuz he’s that big play guy but this guy here could easily be his favorite receiver the guy that he trusts who will always be where he is supposed to be cuz Christian Kirk always was but unfortunately for Christian always uh yes when he’s on the field but he has not finished the last two seasons so I hope for his sake that that doesn’t become what defines the end of his career because uh that was also a big reason the cap yes had he been fully healthy I do wonder if they wouldn’t have tried to figure out something but when you don’t finish two seasons in a row deep into your career uh it becomes an issue all right stay with us we’ll tell you what’s coming up the rest of this offseason off season when we come back to you guys in a few weeks it will be training camp and it will officially be the next year so we’ll see real football john helmets pads hitting we got four or five days at the start where you have to sort of go through the acclamation period the acclamation period i want an acclamation period Brian i in the last 31 years haven’t done it for you well well in life I could have used an acclamation period they just threw me into the pool i think we all good and this is what happened john what’s your favorite part of training camp uh the end because it means the real stuff is really here i’m saying that faciciously but you really do training camp to get to the games obviously but in this case the favorite part will definitely be uh watching the offensive line watching the defensive line finding out if everything we’re talking about is real uh there’ll be an energy this year there always is but with this new regime offensive line there’ll be an energy watching that stuff this this summer i like following the story lines you know you you you get on a guy you’re watching him whatever position it is and then you get to the preseason games and see if what you’ve seen on the practice field can translate whether they really have a chance or if they’re just like one of many flashes in training camp where they make a play but they they can’t sustain it so I like to see them Saturday nights right preseason games yes we get to see it every night um every day I mean throughout the year and throughout that month and kind of get to know them a little bit and kind of see them as they evolve and as the team evolves together as well especially with the new coaching staff it should be very fun so enjoy your summer break we’ll enjoy our summer break and we’ll see you back in late July for the start of training camp

  1. I understand everyone is excited about tutin but it absolutely makes no sense to put him a fourth round pick a head of e t n a first-round running back that has been proven ijs I believe he has playing time but does not start over Travis

  2. Tank Bigsby is the best running back in that room
That being said ETN is a dog too when he’s locked in.

This will likely be a 2 headed monster backfield

Stop with the Tuten glaze—let’s wait and see what he is in the league.

  3. I hate to say this but I'm kinda over johns off-season demeanor you can tell Stevens is happy and thankful to have this job it's a dream job to get the access that they get and every year john talks about just wanting it to be over I wish I could go to an NFL teams off-season program get to talk about the team on YouTube and be around the players I get it's his shtick but it's old

  4. Pulling for ETN to have a great season! I’m praying he stays with us for several more years. Most Jaguar fans really like Travis Etienne.
