Sam Bennett gets a lot of hate for how he plays, but around Broward County, Florida, he's not just a well-liked local athlete. He's a hero Every time he scores, he pays for the adoption fee of a pet at the Brows County Humane Society. It's a place my girlfriend and I have volunteered at before. His wife volunteers there as well.

Whether you hate Bennett or love him, consider adopting your next pet from your local shelter.

  1. He should just be glad he skated on those sexual assault charges.

    Great guy though LOL.

  2. Not to be a downer, but I hope there’s more to this than just dogs being given away for free, because that unfortunately often results in dogfighters picking them up as cheap bait dogs

  3. As someone who volunteered for years at a cat rescue, there’s a reason for adoption fees. It’s a very basic, low bar to show someone can reasonably afford the costs of a pet. “Paying the fees” for someone who can’t afford it is almost always a bad idea unless they’re also paying for food, litter, vet bills, emergency vet bills, and so on.

Please stop doing this kind of performative stunt, it often leads to injured or dead animals and we had to deal with that a lot. We often would BEG for the animals back if it came to that, and had legal paperwork allowing reclaiming the animal if we felt it was abused (it was never tested in court but did seem to act as a decent deterrent)

  4. I feel like you have to separate the player in the game from the player off the ice.

Sam Bennett playing hockey is an aggressive asshole who injures goalies he’s too low skill to screen (pouring one out for my leafy bois).

Sam Bennett the person seems like a great guy who uses his immense sports salary to benefit his community.

I’d love to grab a beer with Sam Bennett the person, even though I’d like to see Ekholm pile-drive that fucker through the ice straight to hell in an actual game.

  5. Good lord you don’t get a free pass for being an asshole who tries to injure other players by being an okay guy off the ice. Plenty of players have shown you can be good on and off the ice.

  6. I mean doesn’t detract fhat he plays with intent to injure.

A shit person can do nice things.

  7. Sam Bennett, like Brad Marchand (and I’m sure so many others) are good people off the ice , they just know playing their style is highly effective and they’ve become successful as a result.

  8. A charity with a great name too! Benny’s Buddies, love it! That’s a wonderful cause, thanks for sharing.

  9. Very few of the rats of the game are actually bad guys in real life. It’s a job and a persona they wear. Off the ice, the majority of players are great guys.

  10. He’s always come across as someone who is a good person off the ice. The same goes with Marchand. I will always love how Marchand actually fought against bigots on social media.

  11. I don’t know, anyone who thinks intentionally giving head injuries to others can’t be that great a guy. It’s not like he’s just an enforcer, he has intentionally concussed a player every year for the last three years. His hit on Marchand last year was the ultimate sneaky brain injury.

It’s cool that he likes animals, but that doesn’t automatically make him a nice guy.
