welcome to the desert and inside Chase Field in Phoenix inner league baseball on MLB the show it’s the Seattle Mariners and the Arizona Diamondbacks first pitch coming your way next so just about set now and today’s starter Ryan Nelson and Singi we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots well no doubt about it he’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down now he’s got good stuff he’s just got to be able to have confidence trust it and really go after hitters not nibble trust that his stuff can have late life in miss barrels of bats all right ready to get underway jp Crawford gets a chance to hit [Applause] and that’s in for a strike and this one is off and running first pitch 640 swinging a foul out of play swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field makes the catch and there’s one gone all right let’s take a look at the lineup a very athletic offensive group with speed spread throughout this offense yeah and it’s so important that they have patient and quality at bats because the key is to get on base if they do that then they can create a whole lot of havoc on the base pass get runners around to score and then that’s going to get you some good pitches to hit as well so a very athletic team and we should be in for a treat in this one it’s not the standard approach that we see in today’s game but it does work for them offensively now a pop up on the infield [Applause] he makes the catch and there’s two down batty third center fielder Julio Rodriguez two out space is empty julio Rodriguez up next for the Mariners spits the plate that’s strike one looks like he sacrificed to pitch right down the middle for tracking and timing some good hitters will do that hammered base hit and that keeps the inning going batting fourth catcher Cal Rally that ball was absolutely ripped 111 off the bat and I’m pretty sure it started to whistle after it left the bat i think I heard that too Boo and these are the moments we appreciate when we can look at Statcast and just see exactly what the data is always so much fun to see what numbers pop up cal Raleigh in the box now as he leaves that one up high this might be a steel situation but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish you have to be careful here that one inside and the count now two and nothing chris with that distraction and the speedy guy at first he’s in a favorable hitter’s count well if nothing else I mean this is a great spot for a hitter to be in and that is in for a strike now two and one really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door that pitch is devastating next offering is in for a strike looks like he’s just sizing him up there really good pitch to hit but he took it all the way sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game that may be a pitch that he turns on and here comes Ru takes off go to second out there and the inning is over the catcher definitely ready for that stolen base attempt got in position quickly and a strike down to second base to end the inning back here in the desert and towing the slab in this one Luis Castillo what do we need to know here well you can see his whip is a little above the league average not bad but I think in this one he’s going to need to control that a little bit better try to limit hitters from getting on base stay in that wind up instead of the stretch and when he does allow base runners be able to throw a pitch he’s going to get a swing and miss get out of the inning so that a base hit doesn’t do more damage and put his team behind the eightball the 10 and that’s a strike fought off foul ground ball up the middle crawford on the run throw to first in time got him batty second now the Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory Lavell a really frustrating showing for them in their last game lots of traffic on the bases but they left a ton of runners on base couldn’t cash in their chances chris they had plenty of chances there’s nobody to blame it on but themselves offensively they just did a poor job converting in those situations you have to figure out what’s your plan going to be maybe watch some tape from the last game make the adjustments so if you get those opportunities in this one you’ve got a much better chance of scoring some runs castillo he has a reputation I don’t know maybe a knack for working himself out of tough situations that he finds himself in you know you like that in a relief pitcher but when you have it for a starting pitcher a guy that can get out of a tight spot that is pretty valuable tz makes the grab and a couple of quick outs catcher Gabrielle Moreno two down base is empty and here’s the catcher Gabrielle Moreno taking his first at bat of the game after entering on defense there’s the strike and you won’t see the skipper rush to get somebody up in the bullpen as soon as he starts to see some signs of trouble this guy’s earned a longer leash and because of that confidence grows with the players and teammates playing behind him that when things get a little rough out there they know he’ll find his way through it and a ground ball to first slides for the stop takes it himself and he got him nicely done at first for the out diamondbacks down quickly scoreless after one back here at Chase Field top of the second and now for Seattle cal Raleigh he’s not going to get cheated up there no he’s not he’s looking to do damage with every swing he takes nelson back to work raleigh goes 6′ 3 in 28 years old and he was a third round pick back in 2018 chopped left side suarez one out in second batting fifth left fielder Randy Aros now it’s Randy Rosarena he’s going to finish with a new careerhigh in stolen bases chris that one clubbed out towards left center that’ll be extra bases makes the turn and heads for second and he’s in with a standup double wastes no time there off the bat it was headed for the gap all the way and as a hitter you love seeing those as you take your first couple of steps out of the box you know you got some real estate to run on and such a good feeling nice liner into the gap right there runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game and now it’s Rowdy TZ Nelson checks the runner rosarena dives back first pitch misses paul one no strikes man at second in for a strike and the count one and one james Kingsley our played umpire consistent as you mentioned and maybe a little generous on the edges [Music] and there’s a foul ball nope outside a Rosena the runner at second with one away and that’s outside lays out but he can’t squeeze it now he gets it to the pitcher covering the bag he keeps his composure and they get the out batting seven this is what it’s all about on that right side of the diamond when you got the first baseman involved in the pitcher as well first baseman does a great job knocks the ball down gets away from a little bit doesn’t panic the pitcher’s exactly where he’s supposed to be nice feed and a nice play for the out so the go-ahead run in scoring position miles Mastro digs in now there’s the strike [Music] next offering is fouled back and now one and two and a foul ball he stays alive no score here in the second foul ball left side he’ll see another [Applause] fouls it off still one and two i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up now one out to right gritic on the run and he makes the catch and that’ll do it one left for Seattle we’ll go to the bottom of the second no score we head to the bottom of the second here’s the cleanup hitter for the Diamondbacks josh Naylor taken high in the draft he’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level that’s in for a strike at 951 strike i understand you want to try to gauge that guy’s fast ball but you also have to be aggressive and ready to hit in your zone now you’re in a tough spot some heat there at 98 mph just blown away in that at bat three fast balls four strikes he wasn’t even able to foul one off there’s not much you can take away from an at bat like that as a hitter other than maybe there’s something wrong with your eyes he’s got to have better timing on the fast ball next time aueno Suarez up to the plate now and that one fouled off one down base is empty looks like a really good fast ball today you can hear that catcher mitt popping looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one pitch in the dirt going to count one and two the only adjustment he needs to make is his target if you aim at the outside corner that slider’s going to end up way off the plate perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it way outside and the count is even two and two that’s foul off to the right side keeps the AB going had a good eye there really good take especially with two strikes and that’s ball four and that’s their first base runner of the game i don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there anyhow here’s Lordis Guriel Jr lordis Guriel Jr [Applause] man at first one away ball one there one and one and it is two and one runn to go tapped at the plate but it’s a foul ball fouls that off to the left and we’ll do it again foul ball another 2-2 upcoming and La Pedro picks up the K boo gets talked about a lot but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years trust me with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate having a good grip on the baseball those high fast balls they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising even though they’re not but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate so very difficult to get the barrel on it two outs not close with that one and it’s one and one just missed swing and a miss and that one missed by a ton bell and those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that he’s got to get a better pitch to hit and it remains two and two cut on and missed and it’s a strikeout and that is the inning one left for Arizona move to the third with no score and we’re back and now the rookie second base Cole Young [Music] there’s the strike belly left that change up got away with one there and he’ll take it but doesn’t want to make that mistake again out to short Purdomo now the throw to first on the run on the money nice play batting ninth third baseman Ben Williamson so up next Ben Williamson get out of here that’s in for a strike on the outside corner 0 and one first pitch strike right there for him he’s going to have to do that consistently if he’s going to give any length to his skipper the one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike the 1-1 is fouled off [Applause] pitch is in the dirt it’s two and two fights it off he’ll see another one out space is empty swing and a miss adam had him out front for the strike out he’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field he was out in front there just needs to let the ball travel a little more his timing will be back on track good pitch for the strikeout back to the top of the Seattle order jp Crawford up next for the Mariners fly to center his first time he’s 0 for one the shorts stop takes a ball [Music] that’s in there Ko man at first and up next for Seattle Jorge Palano he’s 0 for one there’s the strike to the right side sneaks through base hit so that’s two straight two out hits now batting center fielder Julio and now it’s Julio Rodriguez one for one with a single so far that one not close and it’s one and0 crawford at second palano at first two out of the inning and another ball could be some action here on this next pitch couple runners on probably a challenge pitch coming two on two outs off the mark there and it’s three and0 get ready for some action here good RBI guy at the plate runners in scoring position and a hitter’s count cal Raleigh would be next big bat with a potentially huge opportunity next offering is in for a strike first and second two down we’re here in the top half of inning number [Applause] three and that’ll load the bases well the stage has been set for this offense boo it’s all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here here’s a big power threat cal Raleigh first time up he grounded to third at 96 that pitch is in for a strike there it was a high velocity fastball in the zone i think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter he’s got good stuff pitch inside the zone and trust it all loaded up dangerous hitter at the plate and that’s fouled off [Applause] the change up missing at count one and two two strikes a count ground ball nailer he’ll do it himself out to escape a bases loaded jam unscathed and the Mariners strand the bases loaded still no score [Applause] as we go to the last of the third alec Thomas keyhole even though it’s right there and looks pretty good if he doesn’t love it he’s not going to swing that early in the count and that one is lifted in the air makes the catch and there’s two down up next for the Diamondbacks so back to the top of the Arizona lineup and here is Peraldo Peromo and a first pitch fastball is in for a strike on the ground to first and it stays fair [Applause] now batting second Marte up to the plate one for one so far 96 that pitch is in for a strike [Music] and that one is inside ball one good pitch to hit on a T up in the zone i think he was looking for something else right there battling here as he fouls it away [Applause] popped up to the left into foul ground williamson makes the catch and that’s the inning no runs one hit no errors and a man left three innings complete we’re tied nothing nothing and welcome back to the ballpark john Shi with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth Randy Rosarena let’s go the pitch a Rosena checks his swing now it appeal to first and he went around rule the swing here’s a highf fly ball out to center thomas carous it and there’s one down here’s Rowdy TZ grounded out his first time and that’s in that missed by a lot two balls two strikes outside with a breaking ball strike him out looking with the off speed stuff wow that’s a tough call for the hitter but the pitcher will take that all day long not quite in the strike zone but he found a spot that the umpire is going to at least for now allow him to get that call so hitters are going to have to make an adjustment but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit them if they can stepping in Miles Mastro that one close rule the ball one and0 nope [Music] just missed and that gets the top of the zone for a strike pulls that one foul two down nobody on top half of inning number four out there to center and that’ll fall for a base hit hey whatever works right doesn’t have to be impressive flaring it out there and got it to drop for the base hit i think he got it off the handle just a little bit but the bat held up for him enough to get something behind that swing now here is Cole Young just missed he was late there strike one doublebarreled action in the bullpen jaylen Beaks up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello thompson also throwing mastro the runner at first with two gone yeah a foul ball missed with a change up they’re now two balls and two strikes breaking ball misses down and away 3-2 two out runner on first lot of movement in the infield hitters got to stay focused on the pitch ben Williamson in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here into center and no one can get there and that’ll put runners at the corners with two away back-to-back singles when you flare a ball out behind second base it’s really a tough spot for anyone to get to and you’re never trying to do that as a hitter but when you do I tell you what you’re yelling at it the entire way to get down tory Lavell is out of the dugout and he’s going to make a move here ryan Nelson is done and a pretty decent effort out of him tie ball game new arm out of the pen and when we get back now pitching pitching change here number 80 he’s making his second appearance of the season so two outs with runners on the corners here’s the third baseman Ben Williamson right through there for a [Applause] strike corners are occupied with two down and look out as that one ran in and got him next to hit JP Crawford one for two properly he’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike two outs bases are full tough situation right here so important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there inside just missed and a count one and two really going after him here all fast balls to get ahead in the count in the air left field guriel brings it in and that’s the third out so they load the bases but leave them stranded on now to the bottom of the fourth no score back here in the desert ready to go bottom four the batter now gabrielle Moreno Moreno swinging a foul back that’s out of play you know these Dbacks as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate they’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs can they turn that around and stay within the zone we’ll see but I think they have to just missed [Applause] the other way and that’s a base hit so runner aboard to start the inning well they call that an advantage count for a reason you’re so much more likely to get something you can handle showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way didn’t get jumpy didn’t try to pull the ball he let it get deep took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit here’s Josh Naylor and there’s the ball nobody out runner of first that just misses and now two and0 well he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout swings through that one out in front that time well the hitter shows the pitcher that he’s willing to go after that pitch down in the zone so perhaps he’ll come back to it still try to get that ground ball double play swanging a ball lifted in the air right field he just missed it brings it in and there’s one down now batting third baseman Auio Suarez auio Suarez up to hit now scoreless here but now he’s got to deal with a guy who’s got some power got to be careful when you’re talking about a hitter with this type of slug and these type of home run totals first pitch doesn’t find the zone [Applause] just off the inside edge boo he never moved because he never had time to but that kind of velocity you’d prefer that pitcher work away nope that’s inside [Applause] and there’s the automatic clearly taking all the way there in that three-0 count it was a cookie right down the middle next pitch in for a strike three and two now and boy that was the pitch 3-1 you want to be really aggressive on the fast ball and ball four two aboard now batting left fielder Lordis Goriel two on one out lordis Goreel Jr the next to hit struck out swinging his first time gel gets a piece runners at first and second with one gone we’re here in the bottom of the fourth [Applause] fouled off he was late [Applause] well he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs you’ve got to expand the zone he’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it two on one out not close with that one two and two moreno over at second suarez over at first so one away this one in the air right field nice grab on the run two down oh those can be pretty fun as an outfielder got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down nothing better than that you feel like a wide receiver playing football randic now for one he struck out swinging last time delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 oh he’s looking great so far it helps when over 80% of your first pitches are strikes he might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up two on two outs [Applause] one ball in the dirt blocked nothing happening on the bases [Applause] though two outs foul ball still a one and two count in the air to left center rodriguez settles under it and that ends the inning so they strand a pair onto the top of the fifth we go we’re tied nothing no nothing back here at Chase Field ready now for the fifth inning the batter now Jorge Palanco [Music] misses outside and that is ball one well these Mariners doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side the numbers tell us they’re averaging more than a hit every inning and they’ve only struck out twice so they keep finding ways to put their bat on the ball and a foul ball makes the count two and one right through there for a strike two strike and that’s outside he should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with three hole hitter coming up if he’s walked [Applause] 3-2 now knocks that one away and will do it again spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another it’s a leadoff walk and that’s the go-ahead run man that’s a tough one to take on the full count but I guess he saw it really well it’s a really nice appearance go ahead run on base rodriguez getting ready to hit [Applause] trying to stay out of the double play right here goes down looking yeah just excellent location on that inside fast ball really locked him up and it’s a hitter it’s not typically what you’re looking for you’re trying to protect away and then in so you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball but either way that’s a really nice pitch so now it’s the Mariner cleanup hitter Cal Raleigh to first and he’s saved he’s one of the best players in the game this one in the dirt that one fouled off all tied up and we’re in the top of the fifth [Applause] fights that one away still one and two and that’s through the swing it’s a strike out oh big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed it’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed they tried to check the swing just couldn’t do it and a foul ball a Rosarena in his fifth season 30 years old now and they went out and made a trade for him last season and that is out of play fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two and there’s a base hit and now first and second with two outs seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there absolutely smoked that baseball what a swing sent it out way faster than it came in of course 113 off the bat and no matter where you hit it at that speed it’s tough to make a play on so here comes Rowdy Tles for two in this one pulled hard but it’s a foul ball first and second two down outside [Applause] next one misses ball two [Applause] that one missing inside definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside really think the outer half is open miles Mastro in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here keeps the effect going with a foul ball palano the Alec Thomas castillo back to work and that one missing inside a sharp slider this one in the air center field rodriguez under it and there’s one down up next for the Diamondbacks designated hitter and next is the Diamondbacks DH ilaro Vargas 0 for one with a fly out to center that’s in for a strike [Applause] next offering is fouled [Music] back hit on the ground to the right side takes it to the bag steps on first and it’s out number two now batting shortstop Heraldo Peromo back to the top of the lineup now up next for Arizona Heraldo Peromo and it’s fouled [Music] away two down to pitch is in for a strike and the count is 0 and two now this offense has just been locked down almost five full innings of shutout baseball [Music] breaking ball inside and it’s one and two the Dbacks trailing by a run last half of inning number five fouls it off still one and two you can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch but just a little tardy on the fast ball that misses and the count is two and two well this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat i’m sure there’s sometimes where pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter and a base hit right there and Catel Marte with a chance to make an impact with two away catel Mart an outstanding hitter in Catel Marte he provides a surprising amount of pop from the second base position listen that’s not something to take lightly getting that kind of production from the guys up the middle it’s not a strength of most lineups and what does that do for a team when you get power from unexpected spots like that when you’re in the dugout and you see a guy come up big like that that you don’t necessarily expect it it just energizes that entire team [Applause] one and one and now two and one after that missed inside that’s a little bit low here’s an opportunity to do some damage and perhaps unlock this offense 3-1 count be ready to turn on a fast ball [Music] next offering is in for a strike great RBI spot here just got to stay focused on the pitch the runner will be in motion so something in the gap should definitely score gets a piece and stays alive smash to the left side throw over to TZ that ends the inning he continues to roll on the mound as five shutout against left-handed hitters this year and that’s his first test this looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup so digging in second base Cole Young that one’s in there and that is strike one ground ball left side suarez throw to first in time leadoff man retired in the six now batting third baseman Ben Williamson now the third baseman Ben Williamson he’s 0 for one [Music] and first offering is fouled off chopped out in front of the plate two quick outs to open the top of the six hey man four pitches two outs that is an excellent base crawford jp Crawford up next for the Mariners one for three fast for a strike activity in the Arizona bullpen jose Herrera up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello two outs here’s a rip to short but he’s there for the third out no runs no hits no errors hard of the order 345 coming up it’s the Mariners one and the Diamondbacks nothing well we go bottom six now now the Dback’s catcher Gabrielle Moreno well these fans definitely want to get involved in the game all it’s going to take is to get the leadoff man or even a base runner on and fouled off great swing and solid contact just a little too quick he’s got to stay back a little longer in there at the knees and it’s nothing at two and that’s in the dirt well he missed badly with that O2 fast ball hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch so got to stay ready for it got him swinging came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front many times if you do it’s a foul ball and you know a lot of pitchers they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter and when they’ve got him up against the ropes got to figure out a way to put them away did a nice job right there naylor up for the third time and takes ball one one down base is empty just missed two and0 and another ball home team down a run here in the bottom of the sixth next offering is in for a strike [Applause] swing and a foul out of play fouled off again and it remains three and [Music] two and it’s fouled off center field so a man on base to start the inning now batting really nice job staying up the middle with his approach he didn’t try to do too much with the pitch just shot it through the infield and stepping in for the Mariners Julio Rodriguez swinging a drive deep right field that one back there and that’s a foul ball palano aboard here at first with nobody out late on that fast ball no ball two strikes [Applause] breaking ball misses down and away and that’s down and away [Music] struck him out looking frozen with the heater at the knees cal Raleigh digs in now got to be careful with a slugger like this because he could turn it into a three-run game in the blink of an eye [Applause] outside low and that’s ball one just missed last two pitches have been down in the zone pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play but in this count he’s going to have to give in elevate his pitches and get back into this at bat foul ball there one-run game one out one on fought off foul strike three and that’s two in the row oh interesting he’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the lead off single back to back strikeouts well they haven’t been able to move that runner up get him into scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring i tell you a good job so far on the mound he just needs one more out and now for Seattle Randy or Rosarena first pitch and that’s in for a strike and that one fouled off two outs that’s a ball and that’s awfully close i don’t know how you take that he’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now that’s off the inside corner two and two stays alive some real good life going through the zone on that one good eye in that spot well he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count knows the strike zone very well so much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not swang and a ball lifted in the air gritic and he’s going to have to battle hope he gets a mistake and that one in the air center field rodriguez sizes this one up drops into the glove and there’s one away up next for the Diamondbacks center fielder Alex a Thomas the next to hit [Applause] here comes the pitch runner breaks for second and that is out of play trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh [Applause] that was backed up the middle and it gets through quick throw back in lead runner holds it second with one gone oh just a nice job coming through in a pretty high lever spot right there timing on the swing was good able to shoot the ball up the middle didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked but that’s a good approach paying off now a huge at bat in this game coming up now here is Ilaro Vargas and that’s fouled off one out the possible tying and go-ahead runs on base [Applause] down the line and it’s fouled [Applause] next pitch misses inside and count one and two [Applause] battling here as he fouls it away guriel on second thomas at first one gone [Applause] next offering way off the plate [Applause] and that one is inside this point in the game you cannot issue free passes he’s going to have to challenge this hitter hitter’s got to be ready to swing it peraldo Pomo in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here that ball is foul and the pressure is building now he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss he’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit try to move it around create just behind and that’s a base hit throw comes in quickly and the tying run forced to hold on at third with one love how he became a real tough out with two strikes right there kind of a risky pitch coming inside with the breaking ball like that you have to bury it otherwise it’s not too difficult to get the back to it like he did that time tying runs now just 90 ft away just got to be wary of that double play though that would strand this is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended what you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands that’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants and that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play base is loaded one away pulls the string with the change up struck him out well this is where the team aspect really comes into play on the offensive side of the game right i mean missed opportunity to tie it up with the runner at third one out couldn’t put the ball in play so now it’s time to pick him up and that’s where good teams they go to they operate on this level of next man up that mentality is what causes them to win series get into the postseason that helps two and one ball three that one misses so a lead off walk maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass and up next for Seattle Miles Mastro that clips a corner man i mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was the Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen ryan Thompson up and loosening in the pen graveman warming up as well and there’s a foul ball that one lifted to left guriel trying to get there and there’s one away now batting second base Cole Young so up next Cole Young and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter [Music] just missed definitely a swing and miss slider down and in he finished that really well just couldn’t get him to offer at it two in the dirt that one is absolutely belted that’s back and into the pole it’s out of here and they add to the lead it’s 3 nothing that’s a swing that’ll boost the win probability for sure [Applause] knew what pitch he wanted to hit spent on some other pitches in this at bat was very patient and it paid off here’s the third baseman Ben Williamson [Applause] and the first pitch misses for ball one one down base is empty two the count [Applause] fouled off and they’ll do it again two down on the shorts stop takes the ball got him looking and he did not like the call two come in on this Seattle homer it’s now three nothing back here in the desert bottom of the eighth now the Dback’s catcher Gabrielle Moreno gabrielle Moreno woo in his second season 25 years old and he was a sixthround draft pick in 2021 woo back to work and that one upstairs ball one well these Diamondbacks looking to string together better at bats when they have runners on but it just hasn’t happened for them yet they only have one hit with runners in scoring position so a lot of squandered opportunities it’s tough because those are moments you just can’t get back here’s a two- on the ground to the left throw over to TZ lead off man is out here in the eighth now batting the first baseman Josh Naylor and here comes the Mariners manager to the mound pitching change coming ryan Woo out of the game it’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute now pitching for so to turn things over to the righty Jackson Kowar jackson Kowar and now it’s Josh Naylor 0 for three a fly out a ground out and a strike out fast ball for a strike oh this is just part for the course these days huge fast balls coming out of the bullpen and ball one i got a ball one strike on the ground right side oh great stop throws from his knees nicely done for the out look at how he dives right there he’s able to pop up to both knees not enough time to get to his feet but he threw a cannon across the diamond to get the runner two outs base is empty next up for the Diamondbacks Au Heno Suarez and there’s a strike good heater at 98 come on and now the count is even well as good as things can be it can be a tough day at the office even for the skippers seeing the offense just sputter not able to get anything going two outs and that is cut on and missed and the count one and two clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider hey you can’t fault him for his commitment now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes and down on strikes he goes and it’s a one two3 inning nothing doing for Arizona they trail in this one three nothing now pitching on the mound now ryan Thompson left-handed batter at the plate and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year so this seems like a calculated move now it’s the Dancoated hitter Jorge Palano and that’s through there for a strike it’s 0 and one [Applause] liner saved it to first that’ll drive you crazy as a hitter if you let it i mean he couldn’t have hit that ball more on the screws than he did and yet he’s got nothing to show for it hang with him i know the feeling and now the center fielder Julio [Applause] Rodriguez that clips the zone strike one fly ball down the line puts it away for the two away now up next for Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh two down base is empty cal Raleigh up next for the Mariners 0 for four two strikeouts and two ground outs [Applause] that one’s in there and that’s strike one meanwhile activity in the bullpen shelby Miller the veteran right-hander appears to be loosening up here also getting ready two down nobody on here in the top of the [Applause] ninth on the ground to third slings it across and the inning is over offense held in check there 678 scheduled to start the bottom of the ninth it’s the Mariners three and the Diamondbacks nothing we’re back and on the mound is the closer Andres Munoz he last pitched four days ago so he should feel pretty fresh number 75 Andres Munoz here’s Guriel leading off for the Diamondbacks left fielder Lordes Guriel Jr [Applause] and a big swing and a miss wow no fair right there i mean that slider didn’t move till the very last moment incredibly difficult to pick that up just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch [Applause] out to center rodriguez settles under it pulls it down and he makes the catch one up one down now batting the right fielder Randall he’s two outs away next the hit for Arizona randall Gritic 0 for three with two fly outs and a strikeout [Applause] and that skips in Munoz a very difficult guy to get hits off of it’s really rare for teams to string stuff together against him he wins every pitch and for a hitter sometimes a victory is just fouling off one of his pitches and that one wrapped foul unless he beats himself somehow can’t find it doesn’t have the control command that day you can pretty much forget about it this one popped up and that’s a foul ball as a hitter there’s even more pressure to take advantage of any mistake right yeah and you’re hoping that you know somehow someway whether it’s a hit by pitch a walk something bad happens because outside of that stuff is just too good to fail hit in the air left field a Rosarena and there are two down and he’s got deception in his delivery and it’s not that he’s trying to deceive the hitters he just has this natural flow that makes it hard for hitters to pick the ball up it gets on him a little bit quicker than they anticipate even though they know what the velocity numbers are foul ball pitch misses there and the count is one and one [Applause] lifted to left and that should do it he’s got it ball game and the Mariners claim the win here behind some great pitching and defense i’d say you’re lying if you say you don’t feel a fivegame losing streak this W definitely helps them relax a little bit and take some of the pressure off from it going to a six seven or even an eightgame losing streak what the heat
