Rangers offensive outburst their highest run scoring production of the season Why it looks like everything’s finally coming together and Evan Carter looking like the prince who was promised We talk about all that and more but first this episode is brought to you by Monarch Money Take control of your finances with Monarch Money Use code lockon MLB at monarchmoney.com for 50% off your first year Now the Texas Rangers are on a threegame winning streak after an offensive onslaught last night against the Minnesota Twins 16 runs to just four given up and this game was was closer than it may look It really got out of hand in the late innings but the Rangers weren’t quite able to pull away until really that sixth inning The offense wasn’t doing all that much early on in this game facing Simeon Woods Richardson who was just called up after being in the minor leagues It seemed like this this Twins bullpen was a little bit decimated a little bit you know used up heading into this series because Wood Richardson I don’t think should have been in this game for as long as he was But yeah he soaked up a lot of pitches throwing uh well 98 pitches and four and two/3 innings The R he was trying just desperately to get out of that fifth inning but this Ranger squad would not let that happen piling on three runs in the fourth inning five in the fifth and two more in the sixth and then just for good measure six runs to finish off these Twins in the eighth inning A 16r run outburst in which the Rangers had 17 hits four walks and just four strikeouts And you know what it could have been a lot worse I mean expected batting average-wise I mean the Rangers in this game hit 378 as a team 378 as a team but that’s not as good as it could have been The expected batting average for this team in this game 434 Oh my goodness I have never seen an expected batting average so high I mean this team was just crushing the ball They were putting together really quality played appearances and they were doing so with runners and scoring position and doing it with two outs and even with two strikes at times I mean a two out RBI two out two strike 02 RBI for Josh Smith And you know right when it seemed like the Twins kept on being about to get out of jams they weren’t able to The Rangers were 9 for 21 with runners at scoring position Nine for 21 with quite a few extra base hits A five RBI day for Kyle Hashoka who had a couple of great at bats Josh Young had a multi-hit day and four RBI’s Evan Carter had a three hit three walk day or excuse me three RBI day One walk and a homer The second game consecutively where he has homered And Evan Carter was really the star of the show in this one both offensively and defensively Heck the bottom of this Rangers order was fantastic Multi-hit days for everybody in the bottom four of the order including Evan Carter Josh Young Adulus Garcia and Kyle Hagashi All of them having really quality plate appearances with runners in scoring position doing what they needed to do to drive in those runs and get the Rangers to a AOS second best run differential of plus4 and they’re only a plus seven away from the Houston Astros who lost last night The Rangers are just four and a half games back in the AOS just three and a half games back in the wild card of these Twins And they just put together an incredible performance But nobody had a better day than Evan Carter Not just offensively but defensively He had a tworun homer that accounted for two of his three RBI’s his first walk of the month He hasn’t been walking all that much which is a little surprising for Evan Carter Um but still he is not chasing and he is not striking out as much as he had been in the past So those play appearances have been very very quality He has been you know putting together quality contact and he’s been playing incredible defense too I mean three truly exceptional plays Well three highlight reel plays One or two of them may have been aided by a couple of of missteps especially early on But you know to close out the first and the third inning with the runner in scoring position making some truly heroic grabs a sl a couple of sliding catches in that first inning The first one he didn’t really get a good read on it A leadoff double by Byron Buckton The game was still nothing nothing at that point and you know stayed nothing nothing a couple of times because of some great plays by Evan Carter including a leaping grab on a ball that had an expected batting average over 700 in that third inning A beautiful leaping grab and now Evan Carter in 17 games his war is up to.7 His OPS is up to 772 which is the best on this team It was raised up It was near more than doubled with just these last couple of games I mean heading into that final game of the series in Washington he was hitting 167 He had an on base of 239 and a slugging percentage of 238 Not ideal Now after two consecutive three hit games he’s hitting 255 His on base of 321 his slugging is 451 and he’s been playing some exceptional defense out there in center field as well This has just been a brilliant couple of games for Evan Carter And if this is the start of a hot streak for Evan Carter the Rangers desperately needed I mean there were a lot of people that just kind of wrote off Evan Carter after you know he missed the start of this season and was sent to the minor leagues because he just looked horrendous in spring training He missed the significant chunk of last year with with a back injury and it’s something that he is managing and working through But a lot of people were just like “Okay well this you know 22-year-old former top 100 top 10 top five prospect in all of baseball Yeah he’s just done He he’s just absolutely done There’s no way he’s going to do anything.” I think that was a lot premature Extremely premature I mean there are definitely reasons to manage those expectations I don’t know if Evan Carter is going to be a continual you know 350 to 380 on base guy with 20 to 25 homers playing Gold Glove defense and playing you know 150 to 160 games a year in center field I think there’s definitely reasons to be you know cautious about that He still hasn’t really figured out or given been given an opportunity to hit left-handed pitching which will be a big part of his development moving forward And you know they’re still managing that chronic back condition how much he’s actually going to play this year how frequently he’ll be given days off It’s it’s still a an evolving process but it’s helpful to remember that this kid is 22 freaking years old He’s 22 years old He was just in high school not that long ago When Marcus Simeon was 22 years old he played 21 games That was in 2013 for the Chicago White Socks Heck Marcus Simeon didn’t play a 100 games in a season until 2015 when he was 24 years old and that was his first year with the Oakland Athletics Evan Carter is still incredibly young And some of the things that he does well some actually the two things that he does the best three things actually that he does the best have not been affected by that back injury at all number one skill of Evan Carter is something that no back injury no injury whatsoever unless he had something happen to his eyes Even then I still think Evan Carter would know the strike zone incredibly well That’s something that does not go away That’s also why the Rangers you know spent big on Shinsuch and he lived up to that contract The rest of the team didn’t But that is a skill that does not go away despite injury despite age despite anything else Evan Carter recognizes spin off speed stuff fast balls knows what the zone is and he will not swing at bad pitches The number two thing that Evan Carter does well that isn’t slumping that isn’t affected by this that I thought might be is his speed He is still incredibly fast in the 95th percentile of sprint speed He’s still an elite speed guy He’s got good instincts on the bases and he’s also still great out there defensively in center field Those are his three best features and he’s also hitting the ball you know with more power than expected He’s got three home runs in 17 games so far this season You know that’s he’s probably not going to be a 40 homer guy ever in his career I don’t think And that’s fine He doesn’t have to be If he is an elite on base guy with quality defense out there in center field elite speed and a really good judge of the strikes will put together quality play appearances that is a really really good player who the Rangers have for what four more seasons including this one They’re going to have him for quite some time And he’s still if that’s all he is that’s still a three four win player maybe a five- win player in some season That’s a perennial all-star That’s still about what we thought Evan Carter was going to be And I think if he can you know continue this production can continue eventually I think he’s going to figure out how to hit lefties He’s going to get some more opportunities And even if he’s not great against lefties that’s what 25% of the league throws with their left hand The vast majority of pitchers are right-handed and those are all skills that have not been affected by this back injury He is still a very very important player in this Rangers lineup as is everybody else in the bottom of this order And they finally look like they’re stepping up We’re talking about why it was such a big moment for this Rangers team and why they didn’t even need much help from the top of this order right after this This show is brought to you by Monarch Money You ever check your bank account and wonder where did all my money go between dining out online shopping and entertainment it’s off your first year Shout out to the thing for making lockdown Raiders your first listen every single day on tomorrow show back and maybe talking about a 17 run outburst for the Texas Rangers offense if probably not but either way I’ll be back after tomorrow’s game against the Minnesota Twins This Rangers offense was just clicking in the best possible way and just some really high quality play appearances for a lot of the bottom of this order I mean Adulus Garcia getting a big day like this is huge Josh Young who had been in a really really rough way for the last two three weeks or so I mean he was really hot to start this season and looked you know pretty good whenever he got back off the IIL after that short stint with the neck issue early on in this season He had been one of the Rangers more consistent hitters But over the last couple weeks Josh Young had really really struggled having a multi-hit day did still have a couple of strikeouts but four RBI’s for him including some really really good bits of hitting where he was just going and getting pitcher hitting pitchers pitches including a curveball that was down below the zone just scooping that into left field for an RBI single and then an RBI double to the opposite field He had been letting the ball travel a little bit more trying to use a little bit more of that entire field which is what Josh Young does when he’s best And it’s the same thing that Adoulles Garcia does when he’s best When Adulles Garcia is about to go on an absolute hot streak the way you can tell it is when he starts hitting the ball to the opposite field with authority And he’d been doing that for about a week to 10 days or so But it hadn’t really been in the air It had mostly been just on the ground like 103 105 110 mph balls just right to the second baseman or right into the right fielder’s glove And I wasn’t sure that it was going to turn into anything But we’ve seen when Adolles Garcia gets hot he can really carry an entire offense for about a month or a six week stretch I mean I remember several stretches during that 2023 season where Adulas Garcia was kind of the only Rangers hitter that was hot and he just goes on bonanzas when he is on fire And hopefully that is something that is about to start happening because the Rangers desperately need everybody in this lineup to step up Heck Jake Burgerer had an incredible day He reached base twice Once was ruled an error a a two base error by a guy who had not made an error all season in the center fielder Byron Buckton But Jake Berger his day was so good that his softest hit ball was the only hit that he had on the day I mean he hit balls 112.7 mph That was that two base error He hit a ball 107.8 That was a lineup with a with an 850 expected batting average Hit another ball 106.7 Hit another ball 102 Hit another ball uh 98.3 That was the single That was the least hard hit ball of the day And the lowest expected batting average for any ball that he had outside of that strikeout that was on a called strike three that was well outside the zone Well outside the zone Absolutely should not have been called strike three in a clutch situation But you know this is a sign of Jake Burgerer turning things on after a rough you know week or so stretch She had a great day on Sunday and then a pretty good day in this game Probably should have had at least a couple hits if the defense wasn’t better But that’s the most encouraging sign is that you look at the top of this order and they didn’t really do all that much I mean Josh Smith had a leadoff single then had an RBI single later on in the game Wyatt Langford wasn’t doing much until late on this game One of his hits did come off a position player pitcher and the other was an absolute massive tater a massive bomb for his 12th of the season And Sager who was in the longest over streak of his life he changed up his stance just a little bit Got a couple of walks one of which on a uh well borderline call that went that went for the Rangers as opposed to against them But his first hit breaking that overstretch 110 miles an hour off the bat Maybe could have been ruled an error but the second one absolutely no chance that it was ruled anything but a single And when you look at this Ranger team and they score 16 runs If you weren’t watching you probably thought okay well Cory Seager probably went off for a couple of homers Marcus Simeon probably uh drove in a million runs because he’s incredibly on fire right now Wyatt Langford probably hit a couple of bombs And uh maybe Josh Smith had a great day as well And that wasn’t the case The Rangers have had two RBI’s from the top four hitters in their lineup Just two Just one home run from Wyatt Langford drove in one run and then the RBI single from Josh Smith Sega reached base four times He didn’t have a single RBI because the bottom of this order was raking And this is what the idealized version of this Rangers team could look like This is why I think the trade deadline is going to be really confusing for this Rangers squad It’s why this season has been so confusing for this Ranger squad because it’s like the guys they have in this order are good enough They are good big leaguers They have not been good this year for sure There is no debating that For the most part this whole offense has been stinky for two and a half months For 60 almost 70 games at this point they’ve just been bad They’ve all taken turns having truly horrific slumps But when it comes together this is a team that could be the best in baseball You look at what this rotation is doing We’ll talk a little bit about Mi later on but this is the kind of kind of kind of team that we expected This is the kind of team that could absolutely go on a run I mean having a three hit day you know a five RBI day from your nine-hole hitter a four RBI day from your seven hole hitter a three RBI day from your six-hole hitter and and a couple RBI doubles from Adis Garcia I mean this this is the team that we expected and maybe it just took this long to get things going There have been other teams that have won World Series that really didn’t figure it out until you know about midway through the season And you look up and down the rest of this this AO West it’s not that impressive Right now the Rangers are sitting half a game back in fourth place in the AOS because somehow the Angels have gone on another incredible hot streak And the A’s the bottom has really fallen off I mean they have been horrific over the last you know month-long stretch which as a Rangers fan is incredibly infuriating the that the A’s forgot how to pitch immediately after they just wall up the Rangers That would have been really nice for them to forget how to pitch when the Rangers were playing them what three series in what felt like a month and a half or so That would have been that would have been nice That would have been really nice if they were terrible at that point But that’s not the way the cookie crumbled The Mariners got off to a really really hot start They have cooled off quite a bit Their pitching has fallen off Their offense has fallen off a little bit Cal Raleigh is still an absolute monster but you know they’re back at 500 They lost by what nine runs or so last night and they got obliterated by the Arizona Diamondbacks And the Astros they’re fine They’re decent team They might end up winning this AOS by default because nobody’s that good They’re 36 and 30 though They have a plus 21 run differential Like their expected wins loss record is about that The Rangers expected win loss record It’s now positive because of a you know 12 run victory but it was it was positive before that This was this was a excuse me a 14 run victory They were at zero zero run differential heading into this game Now they are at plus 14 So if their expected wins loss record is 35 and and two If that were the case they’d be what two and a half games out of first place I think a game and a half out of first place if they were if they had the same record as their expected wins loss record But this is a time where the Rangers can go on a tear This is a time where the Rangers they’re on a three-game winning streak This is a decent Twins team We’re talk about this pitching staff being picked up by the by the bats for the first time this season Jeff Glad to have him as a part of the Rangers Locked On Rangers podcast team Check them out in your Locked On Rangers feeds on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts Now this was not the best day for Tyler Mi heading back to Minnesota the the place where he pitched for well a year and a half technically but didn’t actually pitch all that much for the Minnesota Twins He was given away in a lopsided deal to the Cincinnati Reds where they gave up a couple of uh really really high quality prospects and uh they just didn’t get a whole lot of starts out of him It was uh not a great tenure in Minnesota Just four starts the season that they traded for him at the deadline and then five starts before he had Tommy John surgery in 2023 Then he signed that two-year deal with the Rangers Just a couple starts for him to rehab in 2024 And then in 2025 he has been exceptional A little lucky but exceptional You look at some of the expected stats behind his numbers and they kind of tell you he’s getting a little bit lucky He’s not having nearly as many strikeouts as he had earlier on in this season but the fast ball and the splitter and the cutter all of those have been very very good pitches for him It has his overall pitching run value in the 96 percentile of baseball He has just been so darn good But you look at the expected batting average it’s it’s a lot higher than the actual batting average is You look at the expected ERA it’s at 413 which is the 39th percentile So you know 11% worse than league average but his actual ERA the actual numbers what actually matters of what he’s done so far this season is 234 He has been incredible to start this year And eventually I think those numbers are going to come back down to earth They have been coming back down to earth his last couple of starts I mean he has just gotten a a pretty lucky with runners in scoring position with his defense carrying him um with you know the strikeouts just not quite being there I mean he hasn’t had more than five strikeouts in a game since the first of May And that game he had six strikeouts Heck he’s only had three games where he had more than five strikeouts in a game He had the five strikeout game uh on April against Tampa Bay where he went five shot innings and just one hit ball there He had nine strikeouts and three hits against the Angels on the 15th He looked incredible there Six strikeouts against the A’s in uh at home in six innings on May 1st And then 5Ks against Tampa Bay in that game where he looked kind of erratic and was really not helped out by his bullpen He only gave up one run and then the bullpen came in and gave up all three of his inherited runners in that last start against Tampa Bay And that jumped his erra from 164 to 202 And now it’s jumped you know,.7 runs in the last two starts I mean four runs in this one including a home run that was you know not a great home run to give up He hasn’t given up a whole lot of home runs this year That’s also why you know his erra is much lower than the expected He’s been hit getting hit hard a little bit but he has not been giving up home runs This one on an O2 pitch to Matt Walner that absolutely was crushed Not really a bad pitch but maybe should have been a little bit further outside the zone because seemed like he was you know gearing up for the off speed stuff And I guess he thought that he set him up to where he could throw a fast ball by him in the zone for strike three Alas that was not the case But you know 10 hits for him allowed in this one Thankfully only just the one walk but only three strikeouts in five and two/3 innings Bullbing comes in and does its job But with this starting rotation they have been carrying this Rangers team to this point in the season They have been taxed They have been doing a lot They have had to been nearly perfect to this point in the season And we are 65 70 games into this season And the rotation it’s not going to stay like this We were 67 games into the season My mistake I was I was splitting the difference But this rotation as good as it’s been Nathan Evoli has been incredible Jacob Gro has been incredible Tyler Mi has been incredible as well but they’re not going to have all going to have sub two and a half eras to this point through the end of this season I don’t think Nathan Ivali is going to have a 156 ERA at the end of the year Exactly I don’t think it’s going to be below two If it is that is incredible Phenomenal Maybe Jacob Deg Grom will have a sub 2 RA because that’s something that he does with regularity Tyler Mi if he can have a sub3 RA and give the Rangers 150 to 180 innings that would be a massively massively massively successful season And if he does that and if all these guys have you know sub two and a half RAS at the end of the year and they give the Rangers 150 to 180 innings then this is still going to be one of the best rotations in baseball But it has had to be so perfect The margin for error has been so slim Same thing for the bullpen For every pitcher on this roster the margin for error has been nothing There have there has been no margin for error The offense has been so lackluster that every pitch is high leverage It’s not a sustainable way to win It’s not a sustainable way to to live as a pitcher It is just a really really tough ask to ask every starting pitcher and every bullpen arm to just be completely on it every single game and give them no margin for error When the Rangers score four plus runs this team is basically unstoppable You score five plus they’re really unstoppable You score 16 you’re going to win every single game with this starting pitching staff But you’re not going to score 16 runs every single game So looking at the process of this offense not just the results but you look at the expected numbers you look at the kinds of pitches that they were swinging at versus what they weren’t swinging at You look at the kind of base running moves that this team was doing You look at how this team was you know still stealing bases I mean they Garcia s stole second base Marcus Simeon stole second base The what they were doing defensively making some great plays in the outfield I mean this has been an elite run prevention team And it’s not just the starting staff It’s not just a couple of guys in the bullpen here and there having good days which the bullpen by the way shout out to the bullpen for keeping it close as well and just completely slamming the door in this one Sean Sean Armstrong coming in and finishing off that sixth inning and then pitching the seventh inning Cole win coming in still with a perfect zero erra on the season through AAA and in the big leagues so far this year Uh really good stuff so far for him Didn’t have a strike on this one Walked batter but still good enough Caleb Bosley coming in getting just one hit allowed and shutting the door down in this one lowering his erra now significantly below five at 471 This is a very very good pitching staff but also a very very good defense as well I mean seeing who the Rangers are throwing out there in the infield I mean Josh Smith has done a really good job defensively at first base outside of that horrific blunder in Tampa Bay Overall a very very good defender You look at the outfield defense Evan Carter making incredible plays out there in center field Adulus Garcia had an incredible day defensively as well The couple of balls he played absolutely perfectly getting that outfield assist of Ty France at second base I mean Mi got out of that jam Not because he pitched particularly well He pitched okay but early on this game could have gotten away from Tyler Mi if not for the incredible defense of Adulles Garcia That right field in Minnesota is a very very difficult right field to play There was that ball that was the first ball hit in play by Byron Buckton It looked like it was gone by a mile and it bounces off that weird right field jettison porch and Adul Garcia played it perfectly That ball that he he got Ty France out on was a ball that he played he got a little bit too close to the wall and then back backs off exactly as he needs to plays the ball right off the wall barehands it turns and throws an absolute strike to second base He has been exceptional this year defensively This is better than he looked defensively the year that he won the Gold Glove I mean his offense this year at times it has looked really really horrible but because he has been a truly exceptional maybe the best defensive right fielder in baseball Willie Abrau is going to be the only one who has any kind of claim otherwise But Adellis Garcia has been sensational defensively out there in right field And then at the infield Cory Seager has been really good defensively at shortstop this year Josh Shung is a great defensive shortstop Heck the time we’ve seen Ezekiel Durant out there he’s done a great job at the infield in the outfield wherever he’s been Marcus Simeon still a gold glover out there at second base if not for that guy up there in Toronto And Andre Jimenez he is still an elite defense at second baseman And you know the catchers have mostly done their job They’ve gotten better at keeping runners from base runners from just stealing wildly The pitchers have also helped with that And at first base whenever you’re not having Josh Smith out there Jake Burgerer has done a really really good job defensively at first base in a position that I I didn’t think he was going to be that good a defender There’s a lot of things about Jake Berger I wasn’t sure he would be as good as he is including his speed and his defense those two things specifically But this has been an elite run prevention team They have got a lot of elite factors on this team to the point where I I think if this offense starts to turn around I mean it’s not like this offense needs to score 16 runs a game It’s not like the bottom four bats in the order have to have multi-hit games you know three four five RBI g days every single game That’s not what I’m saying That’s not what’s expected of this team And because there are so many other parts of this team that are elite maybe eventually the starting pitching will come back down to earth a little bit like Tyler Mi I don’t think he’s going to have a two two three two four erra for the entire season If it stays below three or even around three that’s very good still That’s very good You’re going to have Nathan Yavaldi and Jacob Deg Grom at the top of your rotation Those guys are the best in the business This defense it’s not going anywhere It is still going to be an elite defense from game one to game 162 They had a a couple of really bad misplays there in Tampa Bay but for the most part this is an exceptional defense This is a lineup with incredible potential And if they start turning things on this looks a lot more like the World Series contender that we were promised at the beginning of the season than they’ve looked like at any point in this season That’s going to do it for today’s show Thank you all so much for listening and subscribing And until next time don’t forget to enjoy baseball
The Texas Rangers offense annihilated the Minnesota Twins by scoring 16 runs in the best hitting game of the season. The bottom of the order in Jake Burger, Josh Jung, Evan Carter, Adolis Garcia and Kyle Higashioka all put up excellent games.
Carter put up his second-straight three-hit game and made several impressive outfield catches.

On April 29 the Rangers beat Oakland 15-2. The next 4 games, they scored a total of 3 runs. On May 30 they beat St. Louis 11-1. The next day they got shutout on 4 hits and struck out 10 times and lost 5 of their next 6 games. Let's see them string a few of these together before we soil our panties out of excitement.
Hope the bats keep up
Keep it going Rangers. Keep it going
They need to keep this up.
