Magic Johnson gives his definition of what a Superstar is: “A person who can go on the road and sell the building out.”

  1. That’s actually a really good measurement.

    I don’t have a sarcastic comment, he’s right.

  2. Magic on point for once. If you have to even question whether a guy is a Superstar, then that’s your answer.

  3. It’s a perfectly fair way to define “superstar,” even if it’s a different one than others might use.

  4. Great take by Magic. I’ve always considered a superstar beyond the skill set alone

  5. Yeah, it could be for a short time too just like Jeremy Lin for a few weeks, he was a superstar

  6. I don’t even know what to call a player who, whenever they go on the road, the home teams move their game into a bigger capacity arena in order to meet the crowd demand

  7. People call a player a superstar just because they’re better than a typical all star. Superstar should be reserved for those really special players like LeBron, Steph, etc.

  8. Simple, they are Must Watch TV. Caitlin Clark is a great example from the W

  9. Man, he nailed it on this one. I’d say it’s not just about filling the seats, it’s about how much more valuable those seats become when they are in town.

Goes to show why Caitlin Clark might be the biggest basketball superstar right now. It’s Caitlin, LeBron and Steph. A massive gap between them and everyone else in the basketball world. Maybe Wemby will be up there soon.

  10. lol. reminds me of linsanity

i was there at the raptors game and boy he made it his home court

  11. People always miss this fact when talking about whom is a superstar and who is the face of the NBA. It’s not just play on the court, it’s also about marketability, drawing power and fame.

  12. It’s a good way to measure tbh
When we split up season tickets for Celtics games the biggest draws are teams with stars, especially wet teams with only one visit, and competitive teams.

In my adult life the biggest tickets were to see Jordan, Shaq, Young Vince Carter, Kobe, LeBron, Iverson, Nash, Yao, Curry, Westbrook/Durant and Doncic.

  13. The fact this is still a conversation topic is just….such an indictment at how absolutely horrific ESPNs coverage is now.

  14. By the end of Lukas 73 point game the hawks fans were even cheering for him to keep scoring despite it being a close game.

    Superstar

  15. In my view there are only 2 superstars in the league.

I don’t have to tell you who they are. That’s why.

  16. I was fully prepared to disagree with whatever Magic said … and then slowly realized it might just be the best damn answer possible. It’s such a simple way to describe what a superstar is and has so many layers once you start unpacking it.

  17. A lot of people would say he wasn’t, but Toronto Raptors Vince Carter absolutely met this criteria.

  18. To me, a superstar is someone that people that don’t follow your sport / hobby know. i don’t follow hockey at all, but I know Wayne Gretzky. I don’t follow soccer at all, but I know Messi and Ronaldo. That to me is what defines a superstar.
