runs really well and two the outfield straightaway now the pitch way upstairs with a fast ball one and two so Singa if he hasn’t yet thrown the kitchen sink necessarily and you know he’s got such a wide arsenal he’s gone with the curve ball the fork ball the fast ball among the first three pitches so one and two and Singa holds the set now the pitch swinging a high pop up near first base into first will hold on there with the first hit of the afternoon a one- out single and Luis Garcia coming up well it shouldn’t have been an epiphany for Dave Martinez because only the Rockies have walked fewer times they almost don’t even count anymore but you know only the Rockies have walked fewer times than the Nationals and the Nationals don’t strike out much only the Padres’s have struck out fewer times than the Nationals so they don’t spend a whole lot of time getting comfortable in the batters box luis Garcia Jr left-hand hitting second baseman the batter but first a soft toss to first not score in the top half against Kodi Singa and now the Mets will face Michael Sarroa who is still pretty young certainly by conventional standards but even by baseball standards he’s 27 now he’ll turn 28 in August and he has come back from a nightmarish run of several years coming back from an Achilles injury first pitch to Francisco Lindor take an outside ball one that injury the original one occurred in a game against the Mets during the co season of 2020 the 10 on the way to Lindor as a curve in for a called strike and the count one and one now you know I look at that and see curve ball some would see slider and so fittingly Soka calls it a slur the 1-1 well there’s another one that’s over the inside corner for a called strike one and two it’s almost semantic isn’t it because there are so many different variations of pitches these days the sweeper now right in the middle of it one-two fast ball taken outside two and two to Lindor but all right you got to humor a guy if he says he throws a sler some people want to call it one thing some people want to call it something else he says slerve we’ll give him his slur here’s the 2-2 swing and a foul straight back but Sarroa went down in a heap in that game against the Mets in August 2020 my broadcast partner at the time Wayne Randazzo immediately said “Uhoh that looks like an Achilles.” The 22 tapped foul up the first baseline though remains two and two to Francisco Lindor and the shame of it apart from the simple fact that a good young player got hurt is that he was on his way to becoming a star he was an allstar as a rookie finished second in the rookie of the year voting in 2019 two two pitch down and in a fast ball three and two he was sixth in the saw young voting that year and then it all came undone in that game against the Mets in August of 2020 payoff pitch to Lindor swinging a foul going back to the screen well it was only Pete Alonzo’s rookie home run record in 19 pete was the one that won it that year seroka was right behind him yep and then he reinjured that Achilles on the comeback trail but here he is making his eighth start he’s three and three and the payoff pitch upstairs ball four and then the door draws the lead off walk and for Michael Soka that’s a rarity relatively speaking only the eighth walk that he’s allowed in 37 innings so the Mets get the leadoff man on and Brandon Niml who’s been a hot batter will be next it’s one of the better parts of his game that actually when he was a free agent after his tenure with the White Socks last year he made some improvements i thought maybe he’d be kind of a David Sternses project maybe the vets would be interested in somebody like him but it’s just good to see him back one-year deal trying to rebuild his career he’s done great so far there’s Nemo who’s rebuilt his season lately two run two home run game last night left-hand batter first pitch breaking ball high ball one this is just one man’s opinion and I know it dict often dictated by whether it’s a righty or a lefty on the mound but I love NMO in the two-hole here for so many reasons he’s a little bit more patient you got a guy at first base like Lindor who can steal a base it’s good to have a left-hand batter up the one on the way taking on the outside corner a fast ball one and one i say that because at first baseman has to hold against the stolen base threat so it opens the hole up on the right side the pull side for NMO and he’s patient so he’ll let a base stealer like Lindor got a chance to try his luck throw over and Lindor dives back in again even with that broken toe for Lindor remember he shocked us all in Colorado came out the first time he got a start that Saturday game hit a single and kind of joged to first eventually stole two bases in that game so he’s good to go and always loved the side of the Nationals this year big jump for Lindor now he’s going back to the bag as the pitch is delivered inside two balls and one strike and I I don’t know that’s another thing to talk to Antoine Richardson about because a lot of these Mets base runners lately have been taking these huge walking leads to where they get sometimes a quarter maybe even a third of the way down to second base before the pitch is delivered that time Lindor went back to the bag two-1 NMO swinging a high fly ball to right field pretty deep ball going back onto the track looks to have room and he makes the one-hand catch lindor hustles back to first one man away and Lindor still at first but he almost was on his way to home play cuz NMO just did get under one tell you what those guys in the bullpen out there you can see right into the fence in right field saw two guys put their hands straight up thinking that they’re going to get another one they got a lot of action there last night off Brandon Nimmo and Wan Sodto well here is Sodto and boy does he ever get more and more comfortable with the entire environment here he is now homered in four straight games here at City Field including last night first pitch taken a little bit low and inside for ball one just in his last two games Homer in both of them he’s gone four for eight in this series four runs batted in and he’s enjoying this month as he did the very end of May one and0 to one his average up to 252 now the pitch outside and high ball two go back to May 30th his OPS is almost 1,400 he’s hit 390 since then 15 runs scored 10 RBI’s over his last 12 games and just for good measure he’s 6 for 10 with a couple of homers against Soka no score one outland at first the two in for a called strike a fast ball that’s two and one i talk about his getting comfortable with the whole environment here last night after his home run when he went out to right field fans down the right field line were standing and cheering and chanting his name throw to first lendor dives back in and uh I think that’s two disengagements on one in this one in this one okay i thought it might have been two in this plate appearance but anyway when Sodto went out to right field and got that ovation he turned not only to acknowledge the crowd and just kind of wave at him but he clapped his hands pointing to familiar with it because I think remember was it last year at Yankee Stadium tyrone made a great catch too i think you brought that up to him on the bus after the game it wasn’t exactly this though 3-1 tap up the first baseline a fair ball mcneel stayed in the batters box thought it was foul low fields it in fair territory and steps on the bag for the out mcneel assumed and Felix Suner will tell third you can do anything you want with those numbers they ain’t going to look very good they’re hitting would you believe this 380 against Salazar and so maybe that’s got the door licking his chops as he comes to the plate with the bases loaded two out bottom six and the Mets leading four to nothing well I know that the Nationals bullpen just all told the only team that is worse than they are the Athletics A’s have a six RA out of the bullpen nationals 5.77 salazar not helping that let’s go seven career grand slams on the first pitch taken down and in ball one doris Walk grounded to first grounded to second batty’s the runner at third taylor the runner at second alvarez at first two out last of the sixth four to nothing New York clay Lindor to pull in the outfield he’s batting left-handed and the 10 in tight with a fast ball almost nicked him in the leg and it’s ball two in this situation getting better and better for Lor as they used to say no room at the end salazar to the belt two pitch way down and in almost clipped it in the leg again ball three well Lindor knows one of two things a he may get a cookie here on 3 and 0 cuz Salazar has no choice b look out because he’s almost hit you twice the 3 0 he takes it it’s at the knees a called strike three and one remember McNeel’s been hit today mets were hit twice yesterday they’ve been hit a lot and even if you second so here we go runners at first and third nobody out stannic will have to face Garcia low on deck becomes the potential tying run and you got to figure that unless Stannic gets a double play Nationals have cut the Mets lead to four to two the bases are loaded nobody out and Diaz with a 1 missed outside with a slider ball too how do you stop the snowball it’s rolling hard and the Mets have
