Cole Bagley: Any truth to Utah Mammoth-Brady Martin rumors?

what’s up whether it’s the Jazz Utes Cougars or Aggies these guys have got you cover you’re locked on to Jake Scott and Ben Anderson 1 2 3 on 975 KSL Sports Zone jan 975 the KSL Sports Zone join hands and Scotty on Monday from noon to 3 at John Watson Chevrolet 3535 Wall Avenue in Ogden that’s coming up on Monday let’s welcome our next guest he’s our Utah Mammoth insider at kslports.com it’s my friend Cole Baggley what’s going on Cole not much Ben how are you uh it’s lying season i hope you recognize that i know you do um and I listened to your interview with uh Brady Martin brady Martin if you don’t know has been the big name coming out of the combine actually let’s start there what happened what what who who is this person and why does is he seemingly the only name anyone’s talking about right now yeah so Brady Martin is a 18-year-old center prospect uh plays for the Greyhounds in the OHL uh very very talented player i think uh one that I think a lot of people overlooked this past season um you know his his team was not the greatest he didn’t have the best linemates and so I think that’s why people kind of weren’t really paying a whole lot of attention to him and then all of a sudden he comes to the combine and uh he starts meeting with quite a few teams and you know there was a lot of noise associated with Brady Martin and the Utah Mammoth uh you know quite a few national reporters and and some scouts uh that uh were saying hey Utah’s potentially you know interested in taking this kid in the draft with the fourth overall pick um Utah took him out to dinner and um so I think I think it’s just it’s one of those situations where you know maybe somebody that was a little bit overlooked and then suddenly a team shows a lot of interest and everybody else is going well if they’re interested you know should we be interested so uh definitely a kid to to keep an eye on and one whose stock probably jumped the most at the combine this last week I do think that can get you in trouble if you’re the only team who really believes in somebody and thinks you’re smarter than everybody else in the room so I guess my question is do you think it’s just Utah who thinks he’s deserving of a top you know five six seven pick or do you think other teams actually believe he’s in that range as well no I mean he started out the week probably a a pick that’s going to be that was going to be taken somewhere between 9 and 12 um I think he’s now cemented himself as someone who’s you know likely going to go somewhere between four and eight um you know and I don’t know that the Mammoth are necessarily going to use the fourth pick on him because it’s it’s pretty high i think his range truly is more in that six to eight range uh you know there was a couple other teams that took him out to dinner i believe Boston took him out to dinner and I think they have the seventh overall pick um I think Pittsburgh is interested in him as well as Philadelphia so um you know I I don’t think that Utah’s the only team that is interested in drafting him i do expect him to go in the top 10 um four may be a little bit of a reach but you know if you think back to you know who Bill Armstrong has taken over the last couple years he’s taken guys a lot higher than they were expected to go you know Tig Glo was taken sixth overall this is a guy that most were anticipating again in that range of probably somewhere between nine and 15 um Demetri Simichev a couple years ago another guy that was expected to go somewhere between you know 10 to 20 10 to 15 and you know they took him as a top 10 selection so I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility um and you know Utah is not alone in in liking what he brings but do they want to maybe reach a little bit to select him with the fourth overall pick is the biggest question i I know it’s early because Tee is you know he was a rookie last year and didn’t even play in the NHL and Simb hasn’t been over either historically has reaching on these guys hurt the Coyotes or now the Mammoth i don’t think so um you know I think Dylan Gunther is probably um you know a guy that uh was you know maybe taken a little bit higher than some had anticipated you I think he was drafted ninth overall and you know look look at how good he’s turned out um so you know the draft is tough and you know that even in the NBA there’s guys every year they go way higher than they should or they go a lot lower than they should have and so uh I think you know what Bill and his team do really well is is you know uh make sure that they they have their draft board all all worked out by the time that they’re they’re on the clock and they pick the guy that they believe in the most um along those lines as I said I start out the segment with it’s lying season which is what I’ve had many Jazz scouts and people tell me in my decade plus of doing this you know this point of the year everything everyone says is a lie and they are trying to get an angle and they’re trying to get something uh do you think there’s a chance Brady Martin is a smoke screen for other teams or for the Utah Mammoth or anything to maybe hope somebody falls or somebody else is available on the board or do you think the names projected to be selected ahead of the Utah hockey club means they really are open to the idea of picking him up with the fourth overall pick i think there’s it could be a little bit of everything right and and you don’t really know until Utah’s on that clock and we hear an announcement of who they’re going to take um but you know based on you know what I’ve seen what I’ve heard conversations I’ve been a part of I think when you get to the third pick through about seven or eight anybody could go anywhere um I think the talent you know what I’ve been seeing and hearing is that the talent from those positions three through seven is very very close so I think it comes down to more of who fits your team what do you need what are you looking for and who do you like and you know as I said I think Brady is slightly a reach at four i would anticipate him maybe again being more in that six to eight range but you know the draft is all about expecting the unexpected to happen um you know in my personal opinion you know I really like guys like you know Porter Martone or uh Caleb Deno i think they are um maybe a little bit more uh surefire bets to be not only offensive contributors but they’re physical as well now what you know what people like about Brady Martin is that he kind of resembles a Sam Bennett style of play uh guy who’s very very physical who can score and you know he might not make a huge difference in terms of um you know regular season play but Sam Bennett is the best player in the playoffs right now and that’s the reason that the Florida Panthers are you know up two games to one looking to make it 3-1 so like you said it’s lying season take everything with a grain of salt but you know Utah did show a lot of interest in Brady at the combine you can never have too many assets but do you think that’s still a place where the Utah Mammoth are valuing you know if they could trade back and pick up another future first i know that’s kind of been teased the idea of maybe dropping back with the Boston or somebody and getting somebody else’s future first do you think that would be in the cards yeah I don’t think anything’s out of the question um I think Bill is is somebody who likes to hold you know kind of his his cards in close and he likes for people to kind of come to him and and uh you know beg for uh assets or you know what have you um you know that’s what’s happened quite a few times um and so you know we’ll see we’ll see what happens um there it is something to point out that you know Utah is reaching a point where they’ve got more assets and they’ve got more prospects than they they’re even going to be able to add to their roster and so you know what do they look to do with that uh but you know with that considered you know the fourth overall pick uh was you know came completely out of nowhere there was no pain associated with it for this team this last season and based on you know where the Mammoth believe that they’re headed they might not be picking inside the top five for another seven eight plus years you know if things go as planned for them so I would expect them to make it but you know don’t ever be surprised if if Bill’s out there making moves uh you know on draft day quickly what did you make of the report that they may not be big spenders in free agency yeah what I know is that Utah doesn’t want to overpay um and I think you’ve got a lot of players towards the top of this free agent market guys like Mitch Martner and Sam Bennett that are going to um get paid not necessarily more than they deserve but more than you know some teams are willing to really spend and I believe that the Mammoth are in that bracket that look we have some money to spend we can offer a lot of things we can offer you know close to what maybe other teams are paying but we’re also a team on the rise we’re a young team uh we’re in a new market we have incredible ownership we have these world-class facilities that a lot of a lot of teams in the NHL don’t have access to so I think they’re going to try to couple that and go to some of these guys and see if they can’t bring them in but at the end of the day you know if if those uh offers start going you know well over what they should be I believe the Mammoth will you know look to to add um you
