The 49ers Just Got A Wave of Good News | San Francisco 49ers

otaas are over mandatory mini camp has closed and the dust has settled kindly on the San Francisco 49ers in this episode we’re going to focus not on an OTAAS or a mandatory mini camp in review instead we’re going to focus on some really positive updates coming from Matt Barros himself and I dug in several different locations to get this information so you might be something here you haven’t seen yet hit subscribe if you’re looking for daily 49ers content but let’s get straight into it starting with this guy Upton Stout now obviously there’s a big question mark when the 49ers brought Upton Stout in the question mark was pretty straightforward is he supposed to become the nickel quarterback this year is he a guy who’s developing and someday will become that guy um what do we want out of this cornerback prospect with a very specific skill set and here’s what Matt Barrows had to say about the nickel quarterback position i think it’s going to be Upton Stout he looks the part in spring practices he was really good at mirroring wide receivers in coverage he was active vocal full of energy he looks like he can step into that nickel quarterback role that’s basically a linebacker role so let’s see how he fares against the run and how he holds up he certainly has swagger for a guy his size if he can hold up physically the job is probably his which tells me that Matt Baros also believes that the 49ers definitely want Demodor Lenor to be a lockdown corner and they don’t want him to be moving back and forth between positions that is definitely an interest of theirs he’s not the only person there’s a lot of people that have reported basically a similar type of thing so Upton Stout despite his size is an incredible athlete and uh absolutely loves to tackle the biggest concern I have for Upton Stout isn’t his ability to play the position at the level it’s more so can he play with that type of ferocity and still at his size um not get injured so we’ll have to wait and see of course for that one another update uh coming related to Upton Stout came from the uh mailbag article that Matt Barros put out there and this was the question they asked do you think Upton Stout will be the starting nickel corner and he said yes that’s my guess here are the rookies with the best chance of starting in week one mike Williams stout as the number two most likely rookie to start assuming the 49ers are in nickel on the first snap right and I get that makes sense sure um and then Nick Martin interesting there would he be weak side or strong side that’ll be interesting because of course uh you know you’ve got D Winters in there that’s going to be fighting for that number two role so we’ll have to wait and see on that alfred Collins and CJ West none of that none of those names right there should be surprising those actually were the first five if I’m not mistaken number 100 I think that yeah that’s the first five draft picks for the San Francisco 49ers right there is your top five most likely to play so I guess maybe that’s not the most uh controversial take in the world all right we’ll continue to move on d winters just mentioned his name of course the 49ers did something interesting when they drafted Nick Martin because there’s a belief out there and it’s a strong one it is not a small following that believes D winters is going to get jumped by Nick Martin which I’ve read some of other Matt Barros stuff i can’t remember which things are going to be quoted in here and which things I’ve read from the past but I’ll just throw it out there that Matt Baros has talked about the reality that D winters knew that that he figured that out and he went into this OTAAS he went into this offseason and he’s going into training camp uh with a mentality to handle that so let’s see here yep okay this is this is exactly what it was okay good the 49ers sent a message to Winters in April by spending an early third round pick on a weak side linebacker Nick Martin winters response this spring message received with Fred Warner watching from the sideline Winters was the most experienced linebacker during the spring sessions as he and he played like it he seemed more confident and aggressive than in previous years both on run defense and in the passing game his pass breakup or deepseam route throw to receiver Isaiah Hajins’s offenses drool over receiver linebacker matchups was one of the defensive highlights of the spring winters will have to hold off Martin in training camp but he heads into the summer with momentum this is really really positive news now a few of you guys have have talked to me in the comments about this as well um and we’re in agreement here i think a lot of us are really high on Dwinters this year and as I’ve said several times this summer and I will not um or spring I guess I will not you know belver the point but I really do believe for D he just needs to take that little step forward it sounds like he’s already made that step in order to earn that position because he has a lot of the same qualities uh already as Dre Green Law and he brings in there that veteran experience now um I thought it was going to happen last year and I was a little ahead of the game they obviously brought Devon Devandre Campbell in believing that he was going to be able to fill the role until Dre Greenlaw came back obviously neither of those two situations Dre Greenlaw or Devandre Campbell worked out last year like we were anticipating that they would uh but Dwinters at times left Fred hanging and because Fred was not only playing with a broken ankle but trying to cover for everybody last season there was there was a bit of a trickiness to it hearing that he’s made a step forward I get it with a massive asterisk that this is spring i get it okay but hearing that he’s made that step forward is a very very good sign also came up in a mailbag question there will be a lot of competition which position will be the toughest and who is the under the radar player that will surprise us all you can use your crystal ball to predict competition for weak side linebacker between D winters and Nick Martin will be good and ultimately benefit both players and I want to agree with that as well matt Baros with a great take there this is going to be good for D winters even if Nick Martin somehow gets the starting role and I say somehow like people believe that’s going to happen okay if he gets the starting role this still a benefit for D winters’s game uh what he’s done this off seasonason so that’s a good sign uh and I have no idea who the starting safeties will be on September 7th in Seattle making that position an intrigue in July and August uh as far as crystal balls and under the radar players keep an eye on for newcomers like Jason Pinnick and quarterback Trey Brown on defense we’ll talk a little bit about Pinnick later as well but we got to talk about Jacob Cowing first obviously this young man has a huge huge opportunity if the current roster is the roster going into training camp which apart from an injury I do believe is this is the 90 man like I I think there’s going to be some slight movements maybe here and there um on fringe areas of the uh of the the roster but I don’t see huge wholesale changes happening at this point between now and training camp just my gut ju history whatever just how I feel okay uh but here’s what Matt Barrow said about Jacob Cowing oh my goodness this just feels so good cuz this is a kid that I liked the the draft pick and then when we saw just bursts just just little bursts of of beautiful football being played in preeason okay I’ll throw the quotes out there again or whatever you want it felt like whoa okay and then when you hear DA Lenor talk about how difficult he is to tackle and how his twitchiness is actually better than you’d think and some of that kind of stuff you think oh okay all right we got somebody on our hands here but then he didn’t really get an opportunity last year and you know what you’ve got Debo Samuel gone brandon IU can’t start the season demarcus Robinson probably won’t start the season either most likely that’s what most people believe and Jacob Cowing could have a huge opportunity he has pressure coming from guys like Jordan Watkins so good on him for taking this off seasonason seriously because here’s what Matt Barl said about Jacob Cowing a theme among coaches and players this spring no one took better advantage of the off seasonason than Jacob Cowing the secondyear receiver trained with Pertie and Persaw early in the offseason and was prominent during the spring sessions he caught all four targets during Wednesday’s practice for example Cowing has excellent speed and is doing a better job this year of maintaining that speed throughout his cuts and breaks he’s good with the ball in his hands and can run a lot of gadget plays that went to Debo Samuel in previous years the 49ers were also taking advantage of his speed downfield this is exactly what you want to hear about Jacob Cowing the ability for him to potentially do a little bit of Debo stuff the ability for him to be a burner and be over the top we saw him make a great preseason i get it great sideline catch in a really tough situation uh we saw him also uh do a little bit of a Debo thing uh and and run and like take a like a little slot route through the middle so anyway again all preseason i want to see more in the season that would be uh ideal of course another thing Matt Barrows talked about was Brennan Iayuk of course lot of drama around Brennan Iayuk right now not sure if it’s all warranted but whatever we’ll call it what it is for now talking about Brennan Iayuk’s knee injury I do think that he is coming along well from his ACL injury i don’t think they are going to risk him at the start of the season we saw him at practice he was running around throwing footballs to his fellow wide receivers he looks good the knee looks good and he should be back late September early October a lot of people believing he’s going to be on the pup and that’s Matt Mayoko as well and basically everyone’s saying now Brennan Iayuk probably will not play until week four or week week five week six week five is a short week so we’ll see uh in terms of prep and getting in there and once he’s allowed to practice per the rules and all that stuff um depending on how he gets handled this is how it’s going to play out for Brendon Iayuk he’s probably not going to be available for the first uh few first chunk of the season which I’m going to choose to see as a positive i would like to see Brennon Iuk healthy and ready to go but I think if you get in that situation where he’s like tight and he’s about to land right at the beginning of the season uh which is what his current timeline still suggests that could have a downside that that could like what is that on my head uh that that could backfire for Brennan Iayuk um we saw what he looked like rusty last year it wasn’t good then add to that a year of injury and recovery i can’t imagine it’ll be better so what I’d like to see is Brennan Auka get a little bit of that Christian McAffrey time um no not how long it took for Christian McCaffrey to come back but I’d like for him to be confident and uh to have those extra weeks to get in there and be a factor going forward now that being said the question mark for me would be if the 49ers feel that way will they then feel like they have to bring someone in or will they believe the answer is in the room will they look at Jordan Watkins will they look at Jacob Cowing and obviously they’re already looking at guys like Ricky Pieraw and Jawan Jennings so they’re the guys are already there we’ll have to see if the 49ers are confident enough that they’ve drafted the right guys have the right development there and of course what is the opportunity for guys like Tariq Owens uh guys like that who are fringe potential uh potential options to make the team you know you take a guy like Junior Bergen for example maybe he makes the team potentially in this scenario because of the lack of depth at the position and so he gets a roster spot but truly what they want to see is what he can do at the punt return and they’re not afraid to say after a few weeks he’s gone i don’t know if the 49ers will do that they already have guys like Jacob Cowing um who can field a punt return so they don’t have to do that but it would be interesting what they’re going to do with those extra roster spots assuming that this all develops the way that people believe it’s going to jason Pinnick this one came from a mailbag question question was can you give us an update on the safeties who’s the front runner to start at both spots with Malik Mustafa being out here’s what Matt Barrow said newcomers Richie Grant and Jason Pinnick were the deacto starters with Mustafa Jier Brown Odum and Maris Seagull watching from the sideline pinnick might be the most physically impressive safety did you hear that listen to this pinnick might be the most physically impressive safety the 49ers have had in a while he’s got good length long arms and excellent speed one question about him in recent weeks was why Robert Salah’s Jets cut him before his second season salah explained Wednesday that the Jets had recently moved Pinnick from cornerback to safety and that he simply got beat out by the other safeties this is all back in 2022 but I’ve always been a fan of his athleticism his length his football IQ salah said he’s a really good football player and just being with him over the course of the first couple of months he’s grown significantly from a from a maturity standpoint and he’s attacked the heck out of it he’s going for it pinnick of course also knows Salah and Ber’s systems making him a quick study this spring because of that he’s a front runner to start perhaps next to Brown in week one and we talked when he was brought in about the special teams nature of Jason Pinnick and that that benefit that you get from him that he can be a backup safety but he’s also being talked about in terms of what he can do at safety so that now he’s had some time to continue to develop in that area this might be his shot and you get you talk about like you know Matt Barrels uses the phrase most physically impressive safety at the 49ers have had in a while that is those are strong words those are strong words to describe a guy who is a backup on this roster if everybody’s healthy but I’ll take it i’m not going to complain about it i think this is good to hear this is again positive updates in my opinion that we’re hearing about some of these guys who are depth guys but are definitely making an impression on the right in the right kind of way um because they’re not wholesale names there’s always going to be a little bit of doubt there sure but let’s not forget about who the 49ers have also drafted and Maris Seagull let’s not forget about what’s going to happen when Jyro Brennan and Malik Mustafa are both healthy and both playing which hopefully should be pretty early in the season malik Mustafa believes he’s going to be ready for the week one um we’ll have to wait and see of course Jared Brown however will be back for training camp so so he’s in a really good way so there’s a good shot there as well and he will have to carry the torch for the 49ers at the safety position um and hopefully a guy like Jason Pinnick can do a really important job until Malak Mustafa is back and 100% let me know what you guys think as always we are something like 41ish days until training camp and I’m looking forward to it can’t wait for it look forward to the whole process in the next 41 days uh it will be a blast I’m sure to cover all of the little nuances that we can pick up from what the last couple of of weeks have been there’s so many things that have happened um in the last couple days and I just chose to focus on the stuff that Matt Baros was talking about and kind of hone in on that but there’s so much other stuff that we haven’t talked about with George KD and John Lynch and all the stuff that’s coming that’s been coming out the last couple of days so so much to cover stick around don’t go anywhere appreciate you guys make sure you hit subscribe all that stuff appreciate you and hope you guys have a fantastic weekend still here yeah the buttons aren’t working

  1. Good to hear Dee is stepping up. Depth is always a plus. Injuries always rears its head. So awesome to see the guys stepping up. Add in Saleh’s on field enthusiasm and his way of having his guys believe in his defense and in him. Is a joy to watch on Sundays. Thanks for the update. We all have high expectations for the Niners. Our easy schedule will factor in to playoff possibilities so the sky is the limit. Cheers brother.

  2. I just have two problems with Dee winters. 1. He doesn’t drive the hole in the line to tackle the RB in negative territory. Watch the tape you’ll see I’m right. 2. He is made of crystal. He is constantly missing time with injuries. That’s why they drafted Nick Martin

  3. Let's not forget J.J. Jennings. Rookies and second year guys are one thing… But this man stepped up big-time last year despite the challenges…much as Kittle and Purdy. Bet J.J. has a great season… Aiyuk=Albatross.
