Continued: "Jaren Jackson, the fact he makes only $23m a year, makes him tradeable to every team in the league"

Do you think we're gonna see Memphis blow it up this summer? Or is this them trying to just rebuild around Ja/JJJ?

  1. Anyone other than Bill will try to throw Lakers into this conversation

  2. No one is gonna dominate the nba with the second apron. Let’s get that out of the way. They are constructed to be always in the dance for a while, but that second apron is a dynasty killer

  3. Simmons is given too much credit to the Mavericks with a Cooper Flagg that hasnt proven anything in the NBA yet.

  4. Now if only my Kings could figure that out and blow up this atrocious team.

  5. Cooper Flagg lmao. This dude hasn’t played a single minute and we’re already talking about how he’s going to drastically change the competitive balance of the conference.

  6. Or they just got offered an absurd amount for their 3rd best player and decided it was too good to pass up, especially when they’re getting back KCP, who isn’t as good, but at least is an adequate replacement for him

  7. Nahh the aprons keep teams from being super stacked. Okc will be good for the next decade but they also won’t have this core for the next 10 years which will peg them down to the other playoff bound teams.

  8. OKC is positioned for the future about as well as you could possibly be as a current contender, but that doesn’t mean they’re guaranteed to be back here next year

  9. I really enjoy Bill’s podcast but their hate boner for Memphis is getting to be kinda insufferable.

What sense would trading the two best players to take a roster spot for your team in 15 years make? Unless you know there’s no chance you can resign JJJ next year, he’s staying on the team. Ja, as much as this sub likes to think he isn’t, is a top 5 marketed star in the NBA, why would Memphis trade him for picks?? The logic just isn’t there. We traded Bane because the offer was lucrative enough to make sense, this team isn’t blowing anything up.

  10. Y’all are faded thinking we trade Ja or Jaren. Big market teams really live in a different world bro shit is crazy.

  11. Idk if it’s a white flag as it is that they saw their core 3 isn’t enough and needed to make a choice for which guy to move on from. This trade gives them the flexibility to find a different guy

  12. Cooper Flagg has not played a game in the nba and already people are putting in a category like hes a game changer.

Like hold up before you claim he’s gonna make Dallas contenders. He’s not even close to Luka.

I hope the kid does well but let’s be reasonable here.

  13. There’s no way GMs actually think this way, right?

There’s always going to be dominant teams. Are you just going to dodge competition forever?

  14. Dallas is gonna dominate with Cooper Flagg?

My goodness he couldn’t even win a championship in college on one of the better teams in the country. But somehow he’s gonna dominate the NBA?

  15. Who says that OKC will dominate for the next ten years? There’s no way that they can retain Shai, Chet, and J. Will (plus all of the bench pieces) long-term.

  16. Bill hates the Grizzlies. I’m sure he’d love to see them blow it up and suck for a while.

  17. The Grizzlies sold their borderline 3rd star on what most Grizzlies’ fans felt was an overpay of a contract for 4 1sts while keeping their top 2 stars in Ja and JJJ. I do not in any way, shape or form think this is somehow indicative of them getting ready for a full on fire sale.

  18. > OKC that looks like they’re gonna dominate the rest of the decade

We heard the same in 2012.

(And you’d be called crazy if in 2012 you said GSW would win 4 championships in the following decade.)

Nothing is ever predictable in the NBA.

  19. This is my reminder that NBA media doesn’t pay attention to Memphis

One of the three had to go because of the luxury tax. Bane is the worst of the three. That’s why they did this.

  20. I think they weren’t looking to move Bane but Orlando paid high for him so they were thinking why not and just re tool around ja and jjj

  21. i mean if JJJ is available…i would LOVE him on the wolves

naz sign and trade + DDV + detroit 1st + 2 swaps + protected frp? do they have a shitty contract we could take on for JJJ?

  22. Simmons doesn’t follow or cover the Grizz. And he talks out of his ass for clicks.

At exit interviews, Kleiman emphasized a future around Ja and JJJ. While not saying Bane was expendable, it left questions at the time whether he was the best asset to improve, especially with the aprons.

From someone who actually covers the Grizz (aka, not Bill Simmons, lol): “At the same time, Kleiman reiterated that the team would not be trading Morant and suggested signing Jackson to a new contract was a priority. This left many wondering about the prospect of a Bane deal.” (https://dailymemphian.com/subscriber/section/opinionchris-herrington/article/52501/memphis-grizzlies-trade-desmond-bane-chris-herrington).

An interesting small sidenote is the breaking up of Banes massive deal into two smaller ones, with the players returned, which might add a nuance of flexibility. Something similar happened with Parsons getting back Solomon Hill and Miles Plummlee. Different situations, but splitting the contract offers flexibility.

Also, the timing is important and I think foreshadows future deals when the financial calendar flips to the next season. By doing it now, the salaries match. They couldn’t consummate this deal later, it had to happen now. Maybe there’s a deal either or both Memphis and Orlando are kicking the tires with other teams or FAs that they need to wait for the new league year to explore further.
