Almost anywhere you live there’s a State Farm agent nearby Like a good neighbor State Farm is there [Music] Well good morning good people Mark Holmes here of course with my buddy Cowboy Joe Buu What’s up Joe Bu and as always I want to say thank you all for watching commenting subscribing and being part of the Joe Buu Sports Report without you guys as well as you ladies you know that this literally does not work Hope everybody’s having a great day It’s a new week Um I don’t have my countdown clock I have my one that’s right here Maybe I’ll get another countdown clock Um I’ve got to figure out actually the subscription ran out on this thing So I I have to pay to kind of update it It says 81 days but I don’t think it’s 81 days I think it’s actually less than that But I’ve got to double check I actually got to go ahead and re-establish it and figure out how to use the damn thing I wish Mike was still here I should have thought about that while he was here this weekend so that way we can be accurate But I do like the countdown clock that I have back at Joe Boo’s man cave that shows exactly to the second when kickoff is against the Philadelphia Eagles Before we get any further I have to say happy birthday to Mazy Smith Mazy Smith who turns 24 years old today And you know it’s no secret I’m a fan of Mazy Smith and hope that he ends up being able to turn this thing around Yesterday when we were doing our live stream you know my my man Game Time Brian was talking about how bad Mazy Smith is and things And it’s true As we look at Mazy Smith’s um Pro Football Focus rankings um here’s what I will say A couple of things You think about how our team started out versus as they were going down the stretch Unfortunately everything was a pooch screw last year Everything And that included Micah Parsons Micah Parsons in his first four games before he got injured had one sack Our defense literally could not force a punt against New Orleans or against the Ravens It was that bad They could not get off the field Unfortunately Mike Zimmer respected defensive coordinator kind of came in here half stepping Didn’t want to change too much you know and figured they were playing well before I got here I’ll just kind of be here in the backgrounds and didn’t you know it didn’t change much until later on in the season There was before Micah Parsons got injured and then after Micah Parsons got injured because before Micah Parsons got injured Mazi was dead last at 219 He was awful He was awful as was let’s be real the whole team The team was marred in injuries We lost Sam Williams before the season even started along with two other edge rushers Daw was nicked up You had Micah get injured You had a new defensive coordinator You lost Dante Fowler Dorance Armstrong Stefon Gilmore uh Leighton Vanderes and everybody was feeling their way through it Now I’m not going to [ __ ] you and try and tell you that Mazy Smith is now Aaron Donald I’m not But here’s what I know as far as Mazy Smith goes The Cowboys will be as good as some of the players step up for us Now when you look at the grades overall grade which is collective of the whole season he was 34.8 But here’s the thing that when you think about it and and that ends up being 207 out of 219 Granted that’s not great okay but here’s what I’ll say To move up from 219 to 207 you had to play a lot better than 207 to get the average down there So somewhere you’re around in the high 170s Still not great okay but that showed progress And the thing about defensive interior defensive linemen it’s one of those things that take years to develop You see so many of the defensive interior defensive linemen get better as they get older It’s not one of those things that you start off at the peak and then you drop as time goes on You get better as time goes on And we have to look at it from Aussie Smith’s rookie year where he hurt his shoulder um in Thanksgiving where Dan Quinn does not like big fat guys and he lost you know weight down into the 290s which was too small for what he does and then had to put it back on and then start all over with a new coaching staff The thing that I love and I started my my video this morning with with Micah Parsons is I remember being at training camp and Micah Parson’s there running after practice with Mazy Smith I remember seeing Mazy Smith the first one on the field and the last one to leave because he it’s not a matter of I’m doing an Albert Haynesworth and I just don’t give a damn and I’m just gonna lay my fat ass on the field He was like a sponge trying to learn his craft and get better and better and he was progressing to get better I expect even more out of him this year because of the people around him as well will be definitely better and you’re going to look at a lot of speed on the outside You’re not going to have to ask him to do a lot other than hold the line But here’s where when I go through the numbers at least okay just just bear with me okay uh and people will laugh I know Dan Celo Mazy Panad a you know this kind of crap Screw you guys But understand he ended up with 524 snaps last year which was a lot 59th for defensive tackles He had eight pressures not huge but he was never a sack guy He had 30 solo tackles though Hold on He had 30 solo tackles which actually ranked him 24th Okay that that’s something I can work with He had 30 solo tackles so it wasn’t that he wasn’t getting some work in Now his overall grade was 34 Again we said that’s not not great but surprisingly his pass rushing was better than his run stopping He ended up with the 49.6 His run stopping grade 35.9 The solo tackles like I said he was actually 24th in solo tackles Um and sacks wise he had two which were one more than he had in college So when you start going through here it’s not quite as bad as it seems Don’t don’t get me wrong I need a better Mazy Smith but if I can see him continue to improve if he takes another step from where he was the year before to where he was last year if he takes that same step this year then you really beginning to get something that will help And overall the Dallas Cowboys this team is now predicated on speed They’ve got more speed on defense on edge rushing and things there If Mazy is able to and Osen Deazua is going to be used differently in Matt Everos’s defense if Mazy can just get a little bit of push in the middle the Dallas Cowboys will be able to feast when it comes to getting to the quarterback Donovan Easy with his um ability to bend And now Sam Williams who is um basically this is put up or shut up time This is [ __ ] or get off the toilet time for him He’s got his speed back Second fastest time He’s hit 21.6 miles per hour The only one faster is CD Lamb surprisingly at 21.9 You’re going to be able to have speed on the outside that will be able to get to the quarterback but what you can’t have is a quarterback with the ability to step up And this is where Mazi will be key to what happens to Donovan EZ and with Micah Parsons And we definitely want to see that progression happen Um that’s where I still would like to add to the mix another real standout defensive interior defensive lineman to put in the rotation a veteran who can also mentor Mazy Smith as well Um I don’t know if the Cowboys are finished just yet I hope that they are still looking Um I’m surprised that the post June first cuts that we haven’t seen as much activity as I thought we would That Jaylen Ramsay is still a Miami Dolphin But then again teams might be waiting to get closer to camp to really see what they have before they make those moves And there will be opportunities to add those players Now for the Cowboys what a difference that time has made The thing for me that’s um I look at here was where we were a shirt I wore yesterday It was the SS uh Cowboys and it looked like the Titanic headed for an iceberg Because that’s what it felt like when we started with the Mike Mike McCarthy situation where everybody fired their coach Everybody was already on a jump to go ahead and get their next guy and we’re sitting here doing a Jason Garrett to Mike McCarthy Jerry Jones in no rush to figure out who it is and so on And then we had the hurry process of um hiring Brian Shottenheimimer and then free agency came around And when free agency came around and you ended up having Daw not resigned by the Cowboys and literally saying I’m not going to win a championship there Well of course you’re not You’re no longer here We seem to have hit rock bottom at that point It seemed to be you hired Brian Shottenheimimer who fell off the salad truck that nobody respected at all you ended up doing the bare minimum as far as a coaching search and it seemed like business as usual for the Dallas Cowboys where they weren’t going to do anything in free agency to change everything because of course we have Stephen Jones who believes in our guys aka Catboy We’re not going to spend a whole bunch of money for these players Let’s revisit that for a minute everyone here this morning There are so many different places that we can begin this but let’s start with this My father was a lawyer and he always used to say “Truth is an absolute defense You cannot be you cannot be convicted of liel or slander if you can prove that what you said is true.” Did Lamarcus Lawrence tell the truth absolutely And he said the same thing that we’ve been saying for a long time here You look at the Dallas Cowboys and for so long they’re focused on everything except winning I think what Demarcus Lawrence was saying is hey in Seattle I know one thing we’re chasing a championship and he feels as though his 11 years we can all say we want to say he was in the building for over a decade And I think he feels that from Jerry Jones on down we’re trying to grab attention and all of these different things but we’re not focused on the only thing that matters for a football player and that’s chasing a Super Bowl What do you think Bart i mean time is wasted on the young right and sometimes I I used to always tell the rookies like one day you’re going to be sitting in this seat and you’re going to understand when you have people that’s not serious about winning because we don’t have forever to play So I need you to take my time seriously Michael Parsons right now is a young player But at some point Demarcus Lawrence was him He was a young gifted talented player and he’s watched the the sand run out of the hourglass and Michael’s going to be here as well And I think he’s echoing what I’m sure other players feel like Man this dude always got something to say Hooker said “Yeah you’re a great player man but just shut up sometimes We don’t need your commentary on everything This the new new athlete that comes in the branding You have to ask yourself listen do you think that Michael Parsons is now going to be the loudest voice inside of that locker room is this the right type of message you want to send out that you’re you tweet a Twitter thug or whatever that is So so look there’s two separate parts of this Micah yes we have all been critical of him I don’t really have a problem with him defending his own team but but I I I get that part of it but there are really two separate conversations to be had There’s what Demarcus Lawrence said initially and then there’s the response involving Micah Let’s deal with the first part first Sure Dan We have sat here saying and by we I mean me and practically everyone else who comes in here talking about how the Cowboys are about attention They’re not about winning They’re not really they selectively aggressive and allin and all the different things that they have said And that has all come from outside the house I I’ll never forget Michael Strahan on Fox when they got when they lost in that playoff game two years ago sort of issuing a plea to Jerry Jones when the game was over saying “Please stop treating this like it’s a show Please stop treating your players like they’re actors Please start treating this like it’s a football team like it’s a competitive business as opposed to you know show business which we all understand that on some level it is and that has made Jerry Jones a very rich man.” All those things have come from outside the house Now I understand Demarcus Lawrence is now out the door right but this feels like the the closest it has come to my knowledge to coming from inside the house The recognition that there are people in that building who realize what we’re doing here is not really focused on winning You feel like you’ve heard bits and pieces of it like Dalton Schultz when he signed with Houston talked about how the the tours that went through and how distracting that could be But to come out and say “I know I was never going to win a Super Bowl there.” I mean that that’s a different level So the issue if you’re the Cowboys is outside perception right what kind of if I’m trying to attract players to my organization over the coming years is there now this perception that you can’t win the Super Bowl if you go to Dallas they’ve won a lot of games They won a lot of games while Demarcus Lawrence was on their team but they didn’t win a lot of playoff games So is there some sort of structural flaw in their building in what in the way they operate that prevents them uh a good team from becoming a championship team it’s hard to quantify that and and a lot of times postseason success can be kind of you know a little bit random but 30 years without being in the NFC Championship game it starts to it starts to feed a perception that there’s something wrong there that prevents it And for a player a week after leaving the organization to come right out and say it just flat out that is not going to help fight that perception The one thing I will say if I’m in that Cowboys locker room I’m looking at whether it is Tank Lawrence whether it is Daltton Schultz these guys are saying that on their way out So if you have to find a way to continue to push forward and say you know what ignore the noise They weren’t saying that when they were in the building So if I’m a player on that team and you’re looking at Tank Lawrence some of this I look at maybe I just aged out obviously from playing but even personalitywise at some point you had group chats where you didn’t go on Twitter you didn’t go out there in the public and as a player on that team in that position group you might would hit Tank Lawrence like dude really like if you felt that way you were the leader here in this locker room Why weren’t you saying that while you were here stars at the top with the with the There you go Why weren’t you saying that stuff when you were here i mean I remember you talking about how we were soft But be that as it may I’m not here to bury Dawa Daw was a really great player for us for many many years and he did everything he could Okay so I’m not here to bury DAW What I am to go going to go ahead and look at is the perception of where we were back then how bad things are and how much they’ve actually changed Now the funniest thing is it seems like we have gone from Jerry and Stephen Jones being the driver and the instrument of everything that is the Dallas Cowboys as far as the public persona to Jerry Jones being completely in the background Stephen Jones being the one who’s talking about the business for most part of it you know the things that they’re trying to do being selectively aggressive Ive and how he feels about Shottenheimimer and to them actually seemingly let Brian Shottenheimr become the face of the team and what the team maybe they dissected everything that went wrong They they autopsied the body What did we screw up on last year well we said we were going all in and we let all our players go So we need to fill in the holes Check We did that We have to stop undermining our coach So far check They’re not undercutting him and cutting him off at the knees saying something different than what he’s saying They’re letting him speak We got a culture issue in the locker room We got players at each other’s throats as we find out about Micah Parsons and Daw not getting along You know there’s the video that came out about a week ago about uh Micah Parsons basically trashing DLAW for going bankrupt early in his career and things So there was always something going on between those And maybe out of respect Micah Parsons didn’t try to wrestle the lead role from Daw I don’t know But whatever it is Micah Parsons is the voice in that locker room now Whether you like it or not it’s one voice and they are hitching their wagon to him We actually have the players changing what they’re doing because Micah Parsons isn’t pulling a CD Lamb He’s there unlike some other stars on other teams that are holding out that eventually they’ll get their money but will set them and their teams back because they’re not there in this day and age holding out You miss so much by not being there for OTAAS You do the installs to the point where when you go to training camp it’s about polishing up what you did in OTAAS and mini camp There’s not enough time to teach in 14 padded practices We need to be able to go with what you’ve already got in your head We can’t walk through teaching you the plays and things like that And we need you to get in shape through those because you don’t play in preseason So you have a complete changeover a complete 180 of everything that the Dallas Cowboys typically do in an offseason Now all of it could still blow up in our face You know Eagle fans are are laughing about you know the Greek dancing and opa okay and things like that But what they’re trying to do is it’s not that we’re trying to teach football you know wax on wax off you know jump from this dish to that dish It’s about getting to know people on a different level about learning to respect each other and understanding their background and things because you’re more apt to when you know the person And let’s be clear here we usually bring in so many people so late that we don’t really get to know a damn person until the season’s just about over You’re more apt to play for each other and look out for each other as opposed to your own personal goals We’ll find out if any of this works but the clock is ticking Today June 16th training camp just around the corner As always good people I appreciate you all and um I will see you all soon

  1. More delusion. How did you turn it around without playing a snap of football. Once you play the eagles, you'll know of you turned it around or not. It's all hopeium until then.

  2. U know whaf Mark Damarcus Ware didn't talk trash about the Cowboys D -Law didn't see him arguing with another player either D-law really felt that way good hes nit winning no championship eith the Seahawks

  3. Mark and stupid ass cowboy fans are a joke what turn around the cowboys haven’t played one game stop the BULLSHIT Mark because when the Cowboys drafted Mazi BUST Smith you was the first to say oh that’s a Dan Quinn pick now you saying that Dan Quinn don’t like fat guys which is it Mark you keep contradicting yourself your full of BULLSHIT EXCUSES and the BULLSHIT LAME EXCUSES are starting run out 😂and how many times are going hear Mark say the cowboys are going to be fast and physical how many times it’s a joke

  4. Mark you make too many excuses for these players. You literally just said that Zimmerman didn't want to change much of Quinn's system, then came directly back and said Mazi had to put on weight and learn "a whole new system". That's why no one but Cowboy fans takes you seriously. That why Philly and Dan roll their eyes every time you come up with one of these excuses. They "literally" make no sense.

  5. Bro how long are you willing to invest on a mid player before you realize they are infact a bust?? For the cowboys sake you better hope the front office don’t see things how you do but seeing how dak keeps getting contracts I think they do. So yea put a fork in the cowboys 😂

  6. ❤ good morning Mark thank you for the news update on my cowboys hope you had a great Father's Day as far as your dad and father-in-law are concerned it's one step at a time brother you have yourself a great day

  7. I was really hoping that Mazi would work out 😢. But that’s the draft for you, sometimes you hit, sometimes you miss 😢. But I hope for his sake he can have a good season!!!
