sweep against the visiting Seattle Mariners afternoon everybody welcome inside the Greg Schulty radio booth my name is Chris Garajiola i’m joined by our analyst former Diamondback pitcher Josh Colementor we’re also joined by Steve Zinsmeister leo Gil Martin is our producer engineer and Alli Narini our technical director back in studio coley we heard uh Steve talk about it on the pregame show but just a total performance from the Diamondbacks last night they keep to be taking steps in the right direction especially after a tough win in the series opener but now a sweep could kind of cancel out what happened in Cincinnati get this group back to 500 and having their eyes set on a pretty critical division series against the Padres’s beginning this weekend big series can’t look forward to that one yet take care of business today and the recipes the same as what it was yesterday good good starting pitching bullpin’s a little more rested today so you have some more options down there but I just love the offensive approach they scored in five of the eight innings yesterday and they just kept the pressure on this Mariners’s pitching staff it wasn’t all home runs it wasn’t all extra base hits it was about having a solid offensive approach like you talked about and look this Mariners pitching staff they got some really good arms both in the rotation and in the bullpen the Dbacks were still able to draw four walks they had multiple base hits in uh more than half the innings played that’s the kind of thing that sustained pressure that the Diamondbacks were doing probably in the first couple weeks of the season and something they were getting away from during that obviously tough stretch where they lost nine to 10 and certainly what happened against the Reds the Reds they just scored one run not via the home run and they have the ability to hit the long ball and that helps but they got guys on they put pressure on they scored some runs in a bunch of different ways peril with a couple triples some RBI sack flies and then of course they did have the three long balls which always help going to be a tougher test against Brian Woo for Seattle woo going against Diamondback left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez second start for Rod since coming off the injured list let’s stick with Woo here for a moment this guy has an unbelievable whip for his career and essentially that means he just does not allow base runners whether it’s hits whether it’s walks whether it’s home runs really does a nice job keeping the ball in the park hasn’t made a road start in about three weeks curious to see how he does away from T-Mobile but obviously you pitch for the Mariners you’re pretty good at what you’re doing he’s got a great repertoire and the top three pitches he throws a lot of fast balls a straight one and a sinking variety a couple breaking balls and a change up i think the change up will come into play here today against a heavy left-handed lineup for Tory Lavella’s Dbacks but the biggest thing for Woo you just plan on him going deep into games he’s thrown at least six innings every single one of his starts this year meanwhile for Rod talk to me a little about what he’s going to bring to the table last time out against the Reds five innings two runs allowed not quite as much swing and miss as early in the season but certainly avoided the big inning which had hurt him in so many starts here in 25 location is paramount to any starting pitcher but particularly for Eduardo Rodriguez he came in with a reputation of a guy who can put the ball wherever he wants he started to throw that force fast ball a lot more especially up and in it’s a lot of righties today that they stack the line up against him so if he can run the fast ball and the cutter up and in and open up areas down and away for the change up and off speed pitches that will be a key to his success this final note Coley before we get ready for this one it’s beyond the numbers here it just seems like this group is starting to come together and I don’t know if they’re rallying around couple of injured guys with Montesio and clearly Justin Martinez who were still waiting a a fuller diagnosis on him over the next couple days but the defense was there the key hitting in in critical situations right situational hitting starting pitching has been much improved the bullpen got a little bit of a rest yesterday i mean it just kind of feels like things are falling into place and I’m curious if that momentum just continues here in this finale this afternoon if they get great starting pitching it should and I mean they’re up against it with a good starting pitcher but the way this lineup is it was very similar to last June when this lineup just started taking off everybody one through nine is starting to hit well we will see if the Diamondbacks can keep that Goodwood going the offense the story last night what will it be here today we’re going to take a break when we come back we’ll get you to the starting lineups and then it is time for first pitch it’s Rod versus Woo it’s the Diamondbacks hosting the Mariners now the play-by-play year 5 and3 with a 3.07 erra for the Mariners now let’s take a look at the starting lineup for the Arizona Diamondbacks the win last night improved their record at 33 wins and 34 losses leading off in right field it is Corbin Carroll batting second at second base Catel Marte batting third shorts stop Heraldo Pernomo and batting fourth designated hitter Josh Naylor batting fifth at third base Seu Haneo Suarez batting sixth in left field Lordis Guriel Jr batting seventh at first base Paven Smith batting eighth in center field Alec Thomas and rounding out the starting nine it is catcher Jose Herrera again the lineup for the Dbacks Carol Marte Perdomo Naylor Suarez Guriel Smith Thomas and Herrera and Coley on the mound for Arizona 32-year-old left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez big key to for him is to have everything working he’s going to face a lefty and then eight righties in a row it’s stacked that way on the offensive side in hopes that they can get a rally going but on the pitching side if you start sequencing pitches you could do the same thing to every single hitter for eight guys in a row it’s been some good and some not so good for Rodriguez you talked about the ability to get some swing and miss the change up when it’s on a fantastic pitch but location has been an issue for him this year a lot of his pitches have not only been hit for average but also a little bit of slug do you think that is something that is going to be correctable from here on out it certainly is he’s had the reputation of a guy who puts the ball exactly where he wants he hits Tory always calls it lines but he’s he’s talking about corners he’s putting it up in a corner down in a corner on the edge and if he lives on the edge here he can have success because all the then he can take it off the edge and these guys will continue to swing at it one guy we talked about last night in postgame that has been kept in check for Seattle’s offense has been their catcher he’s now the DH today in Cal Raleigh what have you noticed about the way that this pitching staff has tried to attack one of the most dynamic catchers in all of baseball they expand early he’s shown he’ll swing at pitches off the plate from the left side said he was swinging a lot of pitches way away from him they would get strike one and then go to off speed stuff just to try to neutralize that bat slow it down a little bit and between him and Rodriguez both they’ll swing at just about anything you throw at him especially if you have him in swing mode so get strike one and then go on the attack another scorcher outside here in downtown Phoenix 103° the temperature at first pitch that is why the roof is closed the panels are closed still clear skies here in sunny Arizona but uh 73° is going to be the temperature at first pitch inside at Chase Field and we will see if the Diamondbacks can just keep it going here a sweep would go a long way this is a good Seattle team that is struggling they’re looking to get a boost back in the rotation when Logan Gilbert returns for his next start that’s going to help them out a ton but for the Diamondbacks if they can just take down Woo and Seattle get back to 500 who feel like they have at least a grip on their 25 season once again the Mariners in their teal alternates today teal jerseys gray pants the word Mariners across the chest the Dbacks in their black uniform sets black jerseys white pants the letter A on the left breast pocket rodriguez is ready the left-hander into his motion and the first pitch of the ball game is a fast ball that missed outside and low for ball one and away we go 1241 time of first pitch now Rodriguez a quick worker his 10 swung on by Crawford and fouled away off to the left gave us a count at one and one only lefty in the starting lineup for Seattle is Crawford they have two switch hitters and six true right-handers as the 1-1 pitch swung on grounded up the middle it is Peromo calling off Catel he gloves and he throws to Pave in time for the out one up one down to begin the first weak contact that’s been a theme the Mariners hit some balls hard yesterday for outs but a lot of these singles again not hitting for a ton of slug in this series a lot of singles just finding holes that one did not that’s going to bring up the center fielder Julio Rodriguez rodriguez has proven to be at least in this series a very free swinger here’s the pitch he takes this time in tight and they count one and0 10 homers 34 RBI’s hasn’t quite met his presence felt in this series quite yet and now the 10 pitch swinging a miss fast ball just up and out of the zone and the count even had one ball and one strike in the opener rodriguez was two for five two singles and two strikeouts as this one won swung on hard hit towards short diving Pomo can’t reach it and that is going to trickle into left field of base set he tried to sink with that with two pitches up and in and then that change up down and away he just has to get it all the way down and away against these righties i mean that was about 84 miles an hour off the bat a little bit of tough luck there for Rodriguez that is a small window of ground ball that can get through at that velocity but he is aboard and a good base steeler for Cal Raleigh raleigh batting from the right side first time in this series and the first pitch is just in off the corner one ball no strikes our home plate umpire is Scott Barry he’s joined by Adam Beck at first dan Asonia the crew chief at second and CB Buckner is over third here’s the 10 and that time he missed down with a change up two balls no strikes raleigh whether you look at this season or over his career has been by a minuscule margin a better hitter from the left side than the right but the drop off again is minimal as this 200 taken again low for ball three being very cautious of Z-Rod as he’s now falling behind three and 0 don’t score top of the first androd home with the pitch raleigh takes a strike cutter that time pretty much right down the middle and that’ll make it three and one 26 homers 53 RBI’s raleigh has not homered in this series yet beck’s trying to keep it that way now this 3-1 missed inside for ball four still careful even in a hitter’s count he didn’t want to give him something good to hit he’s the guy you can’t groove fast balls to tried to steal one on the inside corner and just missed this is going to bring up a Rosarena mariners bump him up a spot in the lineup from yesterday and they move Palano down to the five hole so now you have Rodriguez at second and Raleigh at first only one out first pitch to a Rosarena is in there for a strike one of the things for Rodriguez that is his disadvantage we talk about pitch velocity we talked a little bit about it i know Candy and I on the road but that major league fastball about 94 and a half miles an hour close to it it’s hard to beat just a couple ticks below that as now the 01 pitch swung on and missed that was at 92 the count no balls in two strikes you see guys at 87 88 mph with their fast ball who can find some success because that off speed is so much below the hitting speed that it completely fooled guys right has him out in front disrupts the timing as now the O2 from the left-hander swung on grounded to third charging Suarez gloves goes to second there’s one and Catel just could not get it out of his glove cleanly they can’t turn the double play and that’ll set up first and third for Palano great play by Suarez charging in gets it on that tough in between hop and Marte couldn’t quite get it out of the glove did have Raleigh bearing down on him sliding into second base as well perfect throw to Catel and Catel just kind of lost that ball on his shoulder first and third two men down top of the first rodriguez trying to work out of an early game jam only has thrown 14 pitches and Palano from the right side first pitch he swings and sends a softline drive base it into right field a chip shot if you will that brings home Rodriguez and the Mariners take a one- nothing lead not an air but you wonder if they could turn that if Marte got a clean out of the inning and another just soft hit soft single that’s the change up too off the end of the bat so Palano gets RBI number 32 on the season runners now at first and second two down for Mitch Garver garver made his really welcome to the majors with Minnesota he was traded to Texas in the year they won the World Series against these Diamondbacks as this pitch is a strike call that count nothing and won and then he signed a free agent deal with Seattle after winning the World Series and it has been frankly a miserable experience for him in terms of production he talked last year about some of the abuse he was getting on social media and that effect it had on him emotionally now the 01 is a called strike the down and two and the Mariners with the emergence of Cal Raleigh they try and find a spot for him as the DH but with Palano swinging the bat so well this year there just haven’t been a ton of opportunities for Garver no balls two strikes two outs and Rodriguez home with a pitch swing and a miss struck him out on three pitches the inning comes to an end the Mariners score one but strand two and we go to the bottom of the first inning seattle one and the Dbacks coming up when we come back at 6’2 in at 200 lb here comes the right-handers 10 pitch carol takes inside but it is an effortless delivery when you watch Woo work it literally looks like he is just a little step forward playing pitch and catch and then it comes out and you look at the video board it’s 93 it’s 94 here’s 20 carol swing sends a deep fly ball out towards left field to Rosena working back towards the track and he will make the catch a few paces shy of the left field wall sinker away he’s going to try to throw sinkers down and away fast balls up in the zone he will throw sinkers in he’s going to face a heavy left-handed lineup so we’ll see if he starts using that change up a little more here is Catel chel was able to get a couple walks last night no hits as this pitch to him is low for ball one one ball no strikes was able to extend his on base streak to 23 consecutive games woo is ready right-handers 10 pitch swung on and on the ground is second right into the bed basket of Palanco and he will throw to first in time a fly out a ground out and it’ll bring up Purdomo great sinker down and away you throw that pitch to the downward action to get balls on the ground exactly like that executed to perfection woo an Oakland native who pitched collegiately for three years at Calpali before he was drafted by Seattle in the sixth round of the 2021 draft made his debut a couple years ago here’s the first one and Pomo taking all the way looks at a strike has only taken Woo six pitches to get couple outs in an 01 count here in this bottom of the first inning but the Diamondbacks a lot of this series a lot of the discussion has been around pitching and more specifically pitching injuries as the one pitch is swing and a miss and throughout the course of the year we talk about the pitch count being almost the rule of law in terms of how deep a guy is able to go success kind of being secondary as that one-1 pitch missed high and now outside for ball two two ball two balls one strike I believe was that called a strike i have it right with 02 one and two thank you now the one-two pitch swung on sprayed foul by Purdomo and for a guy like Woo obviously there’s still clearly a place for pitchers to the mold of Terrick school but a guy who can every fifth day give you six innings a quality start that’s what Woo has done as this one two pitch swung on and popped up right side it is Palano in between the bags he will make the catch and the inning comes to a close the Dbacks with a toothless bottom of the first we go into the second it is Seattle one and the Diamondbacks nothing in the Morgan and Morgan take a hack at guessing which baseball player or maners said the following i really don’t know what to say i’m just uh so happy I gave something these people cheer we all did begin the second inning donovan Solano leading it off and the right-hander takes outside from ball one one ball no strikes it’ll be Solano Moore and then Williamson 78 and nine solano hitting just 181 on the year as now he takes a strike at the bottom of the zone it’s a countered one and one one-1 pitch swung on and hit in the air towards the right field line that’ll get a pause 10 seconds for station ID and the Morgan and Morgan DBEX radio network kmvp FM arizona Sports the local sports leader on the Arizona Sports app and on 987 one ball and two strikes the count rodriguez he throws and it’s swung on and hit towards medium depth left center field it’ll be Alec Thomas who takes control of this one and he makes the catch for the out that’s a critical area for Rod today up and in to these right-handed hitters you just got a strike out to end the first and a weak fly ball up there on this one here is Dylan Moore first pitch right-hander swings pops it up in the air right side and foul won the count mariners with a one- nothing lead now Rod’s pitched low and away dylan Moore originally drafted by the Rangers out of Central Florida here’s the 1-1 swing and a miss for Seamer that time at about 91 12 miles an hour one and two the count now this pitch is too high the amazing thing was he was drafted out of Central Florida been with Seattle now for better part of almost six years as there’s a swing and miss and he is down on strikes rodriguez gets a lot of his strikeouts especially back that 12 strikeout game he had as will chase that fast ball and cutter up in the zone and so he’s just going to live up there for right now here’s Ben Williamson for a shutdown inning is Rodriguez after surrendering that one run in the first and Williamson did he check his swing no down to zone one a quiet series up to this point now the 01 Williamson takes inside that’ll make it one ball and one strike but one for three in the opener and then last night 0 for three with a walk 1-1 pitch right ander takes a strike called that’ll make it one and two rodriguez making a deliberate effort to work east and west in this strike zone into the righties and then the change up away free to throw the one-two pitch and it’s fouled back that one dead center rodriguez had some self-critique that is not worth sharing on public airwaves i like that he’s starting to throw the cutter in but also away back door got to make it two different pitches here comes the one two now swung on and fouled back like a slider that time again kind of middle of the plate but he’s thrown it so infrequently in this start that it fooled Williamson enough one two another swinging a foul again back to that slider couple hits off the change up weekly hit in the first and now using the slider as the off speed pitch the wind to the one two just missed it probably shouldn’t have looked like that was on the corner but generous call that time will make it two balls and two strikes the second pitch right now that’s right at the bottom of the strike zone he hasn’t got the benefit of the doubt two to Williamson reached for and missed down on strikes and the inning comes to an end third talking about it towards the end but there were a couple things that stood out you know Coley is we talk about all the time sometimes it’s not who you play when you play them the Mariners have a good baseball team but they are right now in a bit of a tail spin and you know with all due respect you go back a week and a half you talk about the Nationals who came to the desert took two out of three from the Diamondbacks it’s nothing against Washington but the Dbacks were in a bit of a tail spin regardless of that arizona fresh off a sweep at the hands of Cincinnati they were three games under 500 they needed to take care of businesses and so much hinged on that opener with the way the ninth inning kind of got away from them the way they came back and won they looked like a different ball club though the next two days and it felt like they were in a different class than the Mariners were each of the last two games you said that Monday night and it seemed like whoever won that game was going to be a big emotional boost and the Dbacks rallied around a couple of their guys going down a big win that they were able to save off what would have been a incredible comeback and you’re right they did the same thing in Atlanta put Atlanta down had that unbelievable comeback they were kind of lulled today one big inning is all they needed and they leave Atlanta and the Mariners respectively both three and 11 over their last 14 just two teams you have to beat at that time not to be too redundant we talked a lot about hitting with runners in scoring position seattle struggled the pitching staff unbelievable when they needed to lock down and get out woo threw the worst pitch of his outing and it just happened to be with the bases loaded chaz Roberts serving you since 42 so when a fairly healthy group they are last I checked about 10 games over 500 on the season they got stars they have pitching and they have been in this competitive division like the Diamondbacks and they know the importance of beating teams in the National League West what can we take away from these three games that gives you optimism going into Friday’s opener against the Padres’s you got great starting pitching through all of them that’s where it starts and Tori will even tell you that but just the ability to build innings and stack hits together they did get that big blow with the two home runs in the fifth but still it was a couple really good at bats to get singles then a at bat to load the bases and put pressure on the opposition and that’s what this team does they’re not necessarily stealing as much bases and causing chaos like they did a couple years ago but they could just draw walks get singles put pressure to make you execute pitches and that’s when teams tighten up and
