Missed Opportunities for the Milwaukee Brewers
it’s very easy to watch that game on Tuesday night and get frustrated and be in the done club and say you know I’ve had it with these guys but I don’t think all is lost there are some guys in this team that aren’t hitting their weight but it’s up to the front office if they’re going to be serious about possibly making a run at the Cubs or getting to the postseason and even by God winning a playoff series they got to make some moves we’ll get to that coming up next on this edition of Locked On Brewers you are Locked On Brewers your daily Milwaukee Brewers podcast part of the Locked On podcast network your team every day explain the Dun Club yeah it was embedded on Tim Allen’s postgame show a couple of years ago where people would call up and say “Well they’re just done with the Brewers the Brewers would struggle they’d be out of the pennet race or they’d technically be in it.” And he would just say “Ah I’m in the done club i’m done with the Brewers.” And I feel like I saw a lot of that tonight and I know it’s out of frustration it is out of frustration because you know what you won’t be back you won’t be done with the Brewers you’ll be back here watching the podcast tomorrow night you’ll be sitting in front of the TV set like I am at 7:05 tomorrow watching that game in fact I wish I would have went down there tonight and enjoyed it how you doing again everybody chuck Freeman Locked on Brewers good to have you along longtime sports caster here in the state of Wisconsin and proud host of Locked On Brewers even though this team just uh man it frustrates me at times well you I’ve had 55 years of it uh this episode brought to you by Monarch Money take control of your finances with Monarch Money use the promo code locked on MLB at monarchmoney.com you’ll get 50% off your first year yeah those those messages those tweets the DMs anytime the Brewers and Strand guys on on base and I feel it too i’m I’m with you on that it’s like geez this team stinks i’m never watching another inning and the next thing you know we’re we’re we’re right back they’re tweeting about the next opportunity the Brewers are blowing on the base pass and getting guys aboard yeah they had guys on the base pass on on Tuesday night in the opener against the Cubs and they dropped now six and a half behind the Cubs i don’t even want to think of them being eight and a half which would them be them getting swept by the Cubs but the top of the order was struggling ortiz at the bottom of the order 188 Durban 216 even Hoskins is slipping now at 242 begs the question what do the Brewers need well they need to replace well at least at least two of those guys Ortiz and Durban i’m not there with Hoskins yet and I know some of you guys have been there for a while and he was hot for a while but now he’s uh you know he’s slumping once again struck out on a 99 mph fast ball that he was trying to hit into Lake Michigan uh tonight but the Brewers need to score some runs i mean I’m not saying anything out of the ordinary here but you’re not going to beat the Chicago Cubs in most cases at Wrigley Field with their offense and their offense hasn’t been as great as it’s been uh most of the season but it’s still pretty good by winning two nothing games one- nothing games three to2 and the Brewers you know they got off to that two nothing lead isaac Collins of all people hit a two-run home run you know that’s Isaac Collins a guy who’s we never even thought of at the beginning of the season getting major playing time because of injuries and that’s who we’re relying on he’s doing the best he can do he’s 244 and this isn’t on him at all and you know but guys like Ortiz and Hoskins and Yelich now again you know Contrarus we going to always have to make the excuse that he’s playing with a broken hand and all that they need help third base shortstop left field third base shortstop left field they need help they need some power i said last week on the podcast that not them not having Willie Adamus anymore in the heart of that lineup hurts and I know Williey’s having a bad year but I’m saying what he did for the team last year and he provided big pop big moments you know nobody really to do that on this team this year yeah you got Jackson Cheerio who put one off the wall in the ninth inning and of course Contraras comes out skies one the center and again I don’t want to hear “Oh the Brewers hit some hard hit balls but the Cubs made the play made some great plays in the outfield.” And yes they did but that’s why the Cubs are a good baseball team they make plays like that peter Curl Armstrong man we’re going to have to deal with this guy for the next 10 years probably you know guys like that they’re good good players they have good players on their team and I think the Brewers have some good players too they do but they need some they need some help obviously the Brewers going into the regular season uh just completely overlooking third base and automatically putting Ortiz at shortstop which turn is turning out to be an allout failure how are the Brewers four games over the 500 mark at this point well it’s because their pitching is great their pitching is just amazing but the Brewers if they’re going to make a move in this thing third base shorts stop in left field and I know Garrett Mitchell’s coming back and Perkins is coming back i don’t know with Garrett Mitchell can he ever stay healthy once he does come back he was only hitting 206 before he got hurt two months ago we’ll get to that a little bit later on here in the podcast but offensively God and Chad Patrick I know some people tweeted at me third time around they should have taken him out of the game he gave him a three-run home run to Suzuki in the fifth inning we can’t have these guys continue to go four and five innings i had no problem with Patrick staying out there because if you if we continue to take guys out when the third part of the order is coming up well they’re going to get these four and five inning starts again and then when the bullpen is stepping on its tongue in July that’s going to be a problem rob Zestrrisnney gave up a home run to Peter Crow Armstrong and what are we going to do he gave a he gave a solo home run i don’t expect Robbie Z to come out there and be Dan Plesk of 1989 right i don’t expect that or of 88 of 87 the three-time Brewer All-Star i don’t expect him to be like that uh so he’s going to give up a run on occasion he’s I He’s pitching better than I thought robbie Z is pitching great for a guy that nobody wanted except for the Milwaukee Brewers right he was stuck in the Yankee farm system and the Brewers said “Hey let’s I like this guy pick him up.” Um but yeah I had no Patrick out being out there for a third time around the road he gave the three-run homer to Suzuki that sort of thing happens how about score more than five runs all right how about it how about scoring some runs like even Sunday they won that game 3-2 and they were able to hold on and hold on for dear life at a game but that’s what the Brewers that’s how they win but you know you’re going to have games like that when you’re living on the edge you’re going to get burned and the Brewers up two nothing thinking that was going to be the way to success again tonight at regular field because they couldn’t get any run when they were leaving guys on base two at a time in the middle part of that inning and in the middle part of that game i thought “Oh boy it’s going to come back to bite him.” Durban not being able to lay down a bunt in the top of the fourth inning runners at first and second now I just thought it was weird laying a bunt down that early in the game that’s how little faith Murphy has in this offense when Durban is laying down on the bunt and before you tell me he’s hitting 218 I get it so that may but that’s that’s where we are right now lowscoring game two nothing game early on we’re sacrificing that guy even Terra when it was a two to1 game Terang was a runner at second with nobody out terraang tried to lay down a bunt and um and he and I think he whiffed at the bunt i think he eventually walked in that inning too or maybe that was the the fourth inning but Terang tried laying down a bunt too and I was like “Oh don’t be don’t be bunting my guy Tang it’s too early.” But Durban I could see but that’s how little confidence Murphy has in Durban and this offense at the plate where he’s bunting first and second that early in the game four fourth inning in a 2-1 game um and then Durban popped out and I put a tweet out i said “If Durban is gonna bat 218 his one job to go up there and lay down a bunt he’s got to get that bunt down because he’s not helping him otherwise.” I mean he’s got to be able to do something to help this team yeah he hit the home run a week ago Saturday uh at AFAM Field against the Padres’s okay but and I I have a guy who always tweets at me when Durban does well does something good are you gonna apologize about Durban no I like Caleb Durban you know I did an interview with Caleb Duran when he played uh when he was coming up to Fondelac to play for the Doc Spiders i did a interview with him he was a great guy great guy but I’m trying to win a like we all are we’re trying to win a division title here and we’re trying to get by the first round of the playoffs durban hitting 216 got we got to do better than that maybe it’s not Durban’s year he’s played every day i I shouldn’t say maybe it’s not Durban’s year he’s a rookie maybe a little bit overmatched at times durban but you can’t have Durban at 216 playing every day third base and Ortiz everyday shorts stop batting 188 and your first baseman who’s taken about 40 points off his batting average in the last couple of weeks Reese Hoskins he was batting 288 down to 242 now can’t have it if you want to win this division if you’re if you’re playing for the future and just trying to get guys experience and all that okay then you know continue to run D if you want to be the Pittsburgh Pirates continue to run Durban out there every day and continue to run Ortiz if you want to get these guys experience for the future but I that’s not where I’m at i’m out trying to win games here and get to the postseason but I mean with good conscience how can you not think hey we got to go out and get the and like I can’t wait to the July 31st deadline i we need a guy now we need two guys we need multiple guys in this lineup need a shortstop need a third baseman guys who could hit i mean that’s just where I’m at did see a tweet from Bob Nightingale from the USA Today said if Andrew Vaughn is producing down at TripleA and he homered for Nashville at Grand Slam on D on Tuesday night if he’s producing the Brewers would think about trading Hoskins interesting if nothing more than a salary dump right so they don’t have to pay the rest of that contract i do think Andrew Vaughn is eventually going to get a shot at first base but that’s a later conversation that’s that’s somewhere down the line that’s the conversation we’re going to have if this team isn’t in contention and I’m expecting them to be and it’ll be a disappointment in the front office would have not done their job if this team falls out cub fans cub fans been tweeting at me they message me on YouTube they hate they hate watch and hate listening to this podcast i don’t mind Cub fans coming i I don’t hate Cub fans at all but don’t be coming at me you You The Brewers still own this division in the NL Central until they’re mathematically eliminated and we’re a long ways away from that all right we come back uh we’ll talk more about well we haven’t talked a lot about him tobias Meyers where have you gone tobias Meyers remember Tobias Myers remember that guy and we’ll talk about him coming up next and what he’s up to these days that’s next here on Lockdown Brewers monarch Money great sponsor here at Lockdown wherever you download your audio podcast we’re on all the major downloads and uh if you’re listening to us on the audio platforms go to our growing YouTube page search Lockdown Brewers hit the subscribe button hit the bell that alerts you every time we drop that episode here on Locked On Brewers locked on Brewers i I was kind of like all over the map on that first segment i’m talking about the pitching and hitting and all that i’m just disappointed the Brewers lost this game today i I really am um the opener in Chicago you had to win i mean it was it had been really good it wasn’t a must-win but you now you force yourself that you got to win at least one of the next two games see if you got that first one cleared and then you’re playing with house money and then you win one of the next two and you take two or three as I said in yesterday’s podcast you can’t get swept by these guys and the Cubs are feeling the same way but the Cubs already got one game in and they’ve pushed the Cubs back now or the Brewers back to six and a half six and a half so Tobias Meyers got a message here today from a loyal Lockdown Brewers listener great listener anthony Castner messages me DMs me a lot great thoughts thoughtful thoughts like all you guys all you guys you know you’re watching the game and you’re DMing me and all that i love that i love that and you could and some of you guys have Facebook friend me too which is great and just message me on there if you want i don’t care i’m not one of these guys who just said “Well they’re just my friends.” No no i’m in the broadcasting business i’m in the communications business i want to communicate with you Brewers fans out there so if you want to message me on Facebook go right ahead friend me if you want um okay anthony says “How crazy is it that Tobias Meyers is basically an afterthought in this rotation now and this rotation looks like it could be something special without him without both Cortez and Erin Saval as well three of the top four starters at the beginning of the season are nonfactors in this starting rotation and nevertheless this rotation is the strength of the ball club.” Unreal yes this this starting rotation of the Brewers is amazing amazing chad Patrick has basically taken Tobias Meyers’s spot in the rotation right this rotation is so good that Logan Henderson can’t be in it and we saw what he could do when he came up in his two starts this rotation is so good tobias Meyers the pitcher of the year for the Milwaukee Brewers last year is in Triple A but he is struggling at AAA where have you gone Tobias Myers you’re in Nashville and an erra of near five in four starts some people in the offseason thought Tobias Meyers should be the opening day starter should have been maybe the number two guy in this rotation but Tobias Myers got sent down we got sent down matt Arnold said basically said “We’re not going to see Myers for a while.” So they knew without in and he did get called up briefly because of a an injury but then he got sent back down again um but Tobias Meyers is struggling down there and this is what I was telling you all about when you take a when you have a guy who’s a career minor leager basically and he has a year of success don’t be all in on a guy like that i wanted to see what he could do for an encore and so far man he’s struggling at AAA he is struggling at AAA though Brewers sent him down for a reason and he can’t get anybody out at the at the AAA level but hopefully he can find find it down there but I mean Logan Henderson Tobias Myers both down at Triple A who could be in the starting rotation but Meyers can’t get anybody out again at TripleA couple other comments I I wanted to read you guys here um a lot of you guys have some great comments and you I’m trying to pull up my YouTube page here it is here we go um I want to point out that the Josh hater trade went extremely well for our brewers the package may not have been great but we flipped Ruiz for Contraras and Pineups always love your stuff Chuck goku thank you Billy um yeah but although the the the hater trade there yeah I mean as it turns out yes okay um but it it took them right out of the postseason in 2022 that Josh Hater move took him right out of the postseason robert says “This Cub series is bigger than most think it’s a must that they win two of three if we were to get swept we just became sellers.” You know if you get swept in this series by the Cubs I don’t think you become sellers you don’t because you still got the wild card to play for and I know that’s that’s what you focus in on second i I still keep a a sharp eye on the on the wild card i I check both every day but I don’t think God forbid you get swept and you’re eight and a half out season’s not over and you don’t become sellers you don’t become sellers savali had an okay stretch later in the season last year but he’s basically a hoham middle of the road pitcher well yeah he’s had some success last year and this year i think Savali’s trade value would have been much better had he not opened his mouth and talked about wanting to get traded you know maybe the Brewers secretly could have dealt him but opened his mouth or well he he opened his mouth to somebody other than the Brewers front office initially apparently because the national pundits got word of it and it was out there and the Brewers ended up trading uh and uh to get Andrew Vaughn now Andrew Vaughn hit a grand slam as I mentioned earlier the Twitter’s going crazy get this guy called up here he took a hanger and he hit it a long way for Nashville on Tuesday night i’m not ready to call this guy up as I mentioned earlier Bob Nightingale says “Vaughn if he impresses Triple A Hoskins could get dealt.” Brewers did deal as I was going to cut this podcast late Tuesday night wes Clark their first baseman DH first baseman hitting about 2006 home runs they traded him to Houston there were no details on that yet i don’t imagine he got a big package in return for Wes Clark but they traded him to Houston traded him to Houston so we’ll see probably in the morning or maybe late night on Tuesday night what the return package is on that a couple of other rehab uh um guys out there garrett Mitchell as I mentioned B 206 started his rehab with Nashville he was in the leadoff spot for Nashville on Tuesday night perkins is beginning his rehab again he did not have a spring training because of the shin injury he’s still a ways back garrett Mitchell could be coming back here in the next week or two probably two weeks for Garrett Mitchell but um who knows got to stay healthy got to stay healthy and you got to produce but I do like his pop i thought beginning of the season I was on the Garrett Mitchell train i said Garrett Mitchell is going to be the guy who’s busting out this year yeah it’s been like the previous years he’s been on the injured list we’ll come right back and talk about Wednesday’s must-win coming up next here on Lockdown Brewers trade coffee trade coffee there’s a lot of coffee drinkers you guys who are drinking your coffee listening to this podcast in the morning coffee isn’t just a Lockdown Podcast Network we are your team every day jacob Misarowski what does he got for an encore you saw what he did last Thursday those five plus no hit innings he takes the hill jam Mo on the hill for the Cubs uh Tyion on the hill jot Tyion uh for the Cubs i think another guy who could be had some days owen Tyion is um going good he’s he’s great but the Brewers man they got into that bullpin on on Monday night that bullpen is an aging bullpen they got I wrote this down they got three three or four guys over the age of 36 in that bullpen that bullpen could could be had and the Brewers did not take advantage stratic guys guys on base I believe every every inning from the fourth inning on not going to win it got to win on Wednesday you do not want to lose Wednesday and go into Thursday’s afternoon game thursday’s afternoon game in a must-win situation with a chance to be an eight and a half out got to come back and win Wednesday you let one through your slip through your hands because you couldn’t hit and you struggled with running runners and scoring position once again this one wasn’t to blame on the pitching staff this one is on the offense once again one other note Dez Cameron back from paternity leave so that means he’ll probably be in the fifth spot on Wednesday he’s coming back so you know what the Brewers probably no matter what he’s in the fifth spot on you know he’s going to reclaim his spot um Drew Aanss who oddly made a start Sunday oddly made a start in left field on Sunday get shipped back to to Nashville and the Brewers dropped the four games over the 500 mark with that loss disappointing loss let’s see if their luck changes tomorrow night at Wrigley night game we’ll be on a couple of hours after the game talking Brewers baseball and It was a familiar night for the Milwaukee Brewers. Stranding boat loads of runners on base in a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. If the Brewers are serious about this season, they can’t afford to wait until the July 31 deadline to make a trade. The left side of the infield needs attention. Garrett Mitchell begins his rehab assignment.Whatever became of Tobias Myers? All this and more on this episode of “Locked on Brewers”

The Crew is only 6.5 games back from the C*bs right now and in the wildcard race, I think being sellers at the deadline would be a slap in the face of some of the most loyal fans. The fans have done their part—packing the stands, supporting the team, and bringing in $ all year. Doesn’t that loyalty deserve some respect? Instead of giving up, shouldn’t the front office invest in the roster and bring in talent that shows the fans they're commitment to winning? Like you've said before Chuck, are we just gonna have a "summer of fun" take our free cribbage board and smile while the front office won't spend some money to make this team competitive in a winnable race…
Cubs bullpen has the best ERA in MLB since the beginning of May. Brewers need to do damage early for any chance to win.
Same old same old, no clutch hitting.
Ortiz leads the world in taking strikes right down the middle.
Hoskins leads the world in swing and misses pitches right down the middle.
Yelich leads the world in swings and misses on pitches 6 inches or more below the strike zone.
Really tough to watch this team, so obvious we need help
Appreciate it, Chuck.
Cubs fan here. You guys squandered a couple of chances to knock us out. Our bullpen has been good lately. It's great to play you guys!
Trade Hoskins let Bauer play he is better anyways
PCA owns our brewers
PCA owns the brewers (so does alonso) 😘
Moves cost money. Our leader doesn’t want to pay. Our summer of entertainment more like our summer of frustration
I’m a Cub fans and I like your podcast. I watch it because I get an honest opinion of what’s going on with the Brewers. Keep up the good work here, I’ll keep looking in.
Cubs Centerfielder's name is legally Pete Crow-Armstrong, not Peter Crow-Armstrong. Unusual, but true.
Don't worry you guys still got Cheerios. Negative dWAR and 104 OPS+, he's really good!
Myers has a 3.48era in AAA
Go Cubbies!!!!
You do know Andrew Vaughn was on the team that set the record for most losses in a season last year, and can’t hit the broadside of a barn right? Go Cubs Go 😎
As a Cubs fan, I think you guys should target Vargas @ 3rd base from the CWS. He had power and is a great defender @ the position
Myers last night. 6 innings, 4 hits no runs.
Cubs fan here. Our pen started off atrocious but we have slowly pieced it together. It's currently one of the best in baseball for a while now. And yes its probably overachieving a bit but…
Palencia
Keller
Pomeranz
Thielbar
Flexon
They've been outstanding for quite some time now. As a Cubs fan im thinking the same thing tonight against you guys. Get Miz out of there. Make him work and hope hes wild enough to elevate that pitch count and then beat up on the bullpen.
We finally have pitching and we’re going to squander the opportunity. Any top tier team would give Bauers his shot and go after a first and second baseman. If we don’t do it in the next couple years with our pitching where it is in the cycle I’m not watching anymore. I’m sorry but Wisconsin fans are too nice. I mean for god sakes we’ve done everything we can with the farm system at some point you need to spend money and go after a couple guys.
You should look up how that "aging" bullpen has been pitching for the last month plus
