on in today’s show we have got a game three preview going up against the Rockies who if you don’t know baseball they are the best team in baseball right now yeah you heard that right they are the best team in baseball i’ll tell you why later on in the show actually you know what i’ll just tell you why right now they’re smoking the Washington Nationals that’s why they’re the best team in all of baseball on the second segment Mike Rizzo the Nationals president of baseball operations he went on 1067 the fan today he talked with sports junkies and he had a lot to say and even commented about Dave Martinez and his job security if you did not hear that conversation stay tuned we’ll have that discussion for you later on in today’s show and I’ve got some comments about from what he said and also kind of get into a blame pie who deserves the most blame for where the Nationals are right now i think we should have that discussion later on in today’s show but we start off discussing Rock game entering this series the Colorado Rockies were off to the worst start in Major League Baseball since the 1800s not the 1900s the 1800s not a single soul out there is alive from the 1800s at least I don’t think at this point in the nationals lost eight straight games coming into this series you know what you have Brady House making his debut on Monday he’s an exciting player you have some momentum coming having him come up dave Martinez his back against the wall he has typically responded well and also this team has responded well with adversity two straight losses and yesterday was about one of the ugliest losses that I have seen in nationals history not a joke the Nationals basically lost 10 to1 yesterday you see the final score 10 to6 you see that the Nationals had 12 hits but all that came when really there was no game to be had anymore yesterday was one of the ugliest awful performances that I have seen from this team it was bad this is why I say that this is rock bottom right now you had fire Dave Martinez chance throughout Nationals Park in the fifth inning of yesterday’s ball game you have seen a lot of bad baseball here in DC over the years a lot of it but yesterday was probably one of the worst performances that I have seen at this point in time one of the worst i don’t know where you go from here right now if on the Washington Nationals I don’t know what’s right and I don’t know what’s wrong but I can tell you this much this is not a winning baseball team this is not the team that we were promised this off season this is not the team that we even quite frankly expected to see this season the language in which that Davy Martinez has used for the last few months here and Mike Rizzo for that matter is that this team is ready to win and this team is going to turn a corner you know what i know this just from I think we all know this managers lie presidents lie they need to tell the fans what they need to hear but this team is not ready to win it was never ready to win and they should never have put that message out there because that is why we are in this situation today where you have fire Dave Martinez chance mike Chriso and Dave Martinez were never going to go into the season saying we’re going to rebuild we’re not going to win this season don’t expect us to win i understand that you can’t say that but when no one was asking for this question no one was going up to them being like “Do you think you’re going to win this year?” Not a single soul asked that question and you guys went up there and said “We are ready to win this is a contending team we expect them to take a jump.” And all of a sudden you start to look at the pieces here and you’re like “You know what cj Abrams is coming off an All-Star season james Wood is going to be here on opening day dylan Cruz is going to be in center field or in right field you know what things are starting to align we all expected McKenzie Gore to take a step up we thought Jake Irvin could be their number two starter you thought that Kade Kavali would be healthy this summer and come into this rotation you were thinking that Trevor Williams could build off of a very good 2024 season it was a pretty easy thing to sell because you can see on paper here you’re like this team does have talent you see the talent on paper and even then getting to the catcher position i convinced myself because I’m like you know what Karuise looks really good in spring training he looks healthy number one and number two looks to be in a lot better shape than what he was last season you bought into it and now we sit here today you’ve lost 10 straight games you are 30 and 43 and the messaging is not clear whatsoever at all this team with the way that it is constructed in 2025 was never supposed to win never and the reason why this season in particular with where the Nationals are and why fans are so upset and the reason why fans are fed up with losing is number one we have been losing since 2020 we have been a bottom of the barrel organization since 2020 that’s just the facts that is the Nationals had talent in 2021 in 2020 basically they had their whole World Series roster on that team outside of Anthony Rendone and a couple other pieces but this team should have been better and it should be better and it will be better but right now this is unacceptable a change needs to happen with where this team is at i’m not saying that if a change happens things are going to change and if Darnell Kohl’s is fired things will change i’m not saying that because quite frankly it will not change the things that we are trying to fix are unfixable at this point and we’ll kind of get into more of that later on in this show of what are what is unfixable at this point but firing Dave Martinez right now with where the Nationals stand what does it do what does it do besides getting rid of one of your figureheads just so the fan base can say “You know what we did it we got Dave Martinez fired and he deserves to be fired.” I don’t know if Dave Martinez deserves to be fired because quite frankly the talent is not as good as what we had expected it’s not is some of that on Davey absolutely but it’s also on the rest of the organization i have never been this frustrated with the Washington Nationals never in my life not once i never like calling for people’s jobs i don’t I will not say fire this guy right now i will not go out there and say fire Mike Rizzo and fire Dave Martinez and fire Darnell Kohl’s i don’t think that’s fun i don’t think it’s cool and quite frankly I don’t know if firing coach is going to get you anywhere where you think you will be because if they do fire Darnell Kohl’s what does that do what does that do for this team not much but I will say this this team needs a shakeup it does it needs a move that’s going to send waves throughout that clubhouse players do respond to that they absolutely do and this could not be this could be in many different ways by the way this could be maybe a David Martinez epic blowup where he goes out there chews up the umpire in a bad mis call and all of a sudden the players start to rally a little bit they get a little amped up we have seen it firsthand from Dave Martinez so far this season we have not seen any of that we have not seen this fiery passionate Dave Martinez this season that we can go up against because there are times where you kind of sit to yourself and say “Davey go out there and say something give this team some life.” And I think that falls on the manager with Dave Martinez with where the Nationals are it’s inexcusable at this point it just is you cannot sit back and say that this is an okay product you cannot sit there and say that this team is where we thought it would be it’s better than that it’s not a winning team we know that at this point but with where we are right now in the language that has been used throughout the years and yes I get it they are not going to say “Yeah we’re going to lose this season.” The Pirates GM doesn’t go out there every single year and says “You know what we’re gonna suck he probably knows in the back of his mind he’s going to suck the owner suck the Rockies their GM whoever that is he’s not going out there every single year saying “We’re going to suck this year.” I understand the job that Mike Rizzo has i understand the job that Dave Martinez has but they went out of their way to tell everyone in the media “We’re going to win look at all these pieces we’re going to be better we’re going to take these steps up look at it every single year we have improved and improved and improved this is the year this is the year it’s not the year this team is not ready to win it was never ready to win never are we fools for buying into that a little bit but also on paper you could talk yourself into it and it feels as if for the Nationals organization it feels as if for Nationals fans that the walls are caving in and they are this is bad i mean this is bad i don’t know what to say anymore i’m not going to go out there and say Davey should be fired because quite frankly it’s not really going to fix that much it’s not it really is not the only issue I really have with Davy Martinez actually I have two issues with Davey is number one his lineup construction we got to fix that we got to be more consistent you have to put guys in situations better and by the way yesterday having Brady House bat fifth kudos to you Davey that’s what you should be doing for your young players not having Dylan Cruz bat eighth that should never be a thing but this team guys it’s not a winning team the Nationals right now are at rock bottom they are and I don’t know if there’s a way that they can get out at this point this team and this organization it needs a shakeup and that’s up for you to decide what i’ll see how this PL season goes out and see what the record is at the end of the year look at the individual performances then I’ll make some decisions on what I think but we’re in the middle of June right now and this team it blows the 10ame losing skin it’s unacceptable getting swept by the Marlins losing the first two games against the Rockies unacceptable mike Rizzo was on with the sports junkies this morning on 1067 the fan said some interesting things we’ll kind of get into that and also he actually provided a little bit of an update on Dylan Cruz so we’ll have that discussion and talk a little bit of baseball for you but before we jump into that I got to tell you guys about some Mike Rzo’s comments Brady House had a very good night very good night for the Washington Nationals got his first MLB hit collected his first RBI and that was cool to see because again this guy has got a lot of talent he also had another walk in there back-to-back nights they walk for Brady House he had two hits in yesterday’s game i’m really liking what I’m seeing from Brady House right now i wish we could talk about him for 10 minutes but quite frankly no one cares about Brady House at this point because of where the Nationals are and that’s unfortunate i wish I could go in and talk about Brady House for 20 minutes i’ve talked about this guy for years but that’s not what the fan base cares about right now the fan base cares about Dave Martinez Mike Rizzo and the You Know What show that is going on with this team so Mike Rizzo was on with the Sports Junkies this morning and gave a decent interview he was never going to go out there and say “Yeah Davey should be fired.” If you expected that I don’t know what there is to expect at this point for you he was never going to do that and he shouldn’t do that that’s a bad look it would have crushed him for it he was never going to do it he’ll never do it mike Grizzo is a loyal guy let’s get that out of the way now but he did say some interesting things he did say that Davey still has the pulse of the clubhouse which I don’t necessarily buy fully into but I’m not totally out on this i do think Davey is still a players coach he kind of drawed the the analys or came the with the comparison of Dusty Baker and I agree with it i think Davey is similar to Dusty Baker in that in that aspect dusty Baker was beloved by the Nationals players davey when they’re things are going well was beloved do I also believe that the the players were pissed when Davey Martinez called him out after Saturday’s loss absolutely but I think Davey kind of you know Mike Rosa said what I kind of thought was that Davey kind of got off the rails there then he was upset and he should have been upset because honestly I think in the time and I had this big thread Davey was right the players are not playing well right now now was it all on the players and none of it on the coaches that’s just wrong it’s wrong davey knows that it’s wrong and I think he just kind of lashed out there because he was upset but the fact is Davey still does have a little bit of the pulls of this clubhouse you may not know it but in this 10game losing skid you have seen a pretty lifeless Nationals team pretty lifeless but if he still does have the pulse of this clubhouse which I do think is sort of possible at this point then yeah I guess don’t fire him at this point but if you do lose the clubhouse and which honestly I’ve been kind of thinking that he may have lost some of the clubhouse and I still believe in that then you have to move on you just simply have to because there is nothing worse for the players to go out there every single day than if they are out on their manager and they cannot trust him after he threw them under the bus then you have to make a move but Mike Rizzo doesn’t believe that he has lost the pulse of the clubhouse i can tell you this Mike Rizzo has been in the clubhouse the past few days and I’m sure he’s been talking to veteran players the young players and all players out there to see what they think of Dave Martinez so Mike Rizzo if he believes in that I guess I do too because Mike Rizzo does have that fiery passion kind of sense of things and you have seen him say things in the past and you have seen him come out and just lay into people i’m not saying that he was going to do that but still I do believe that Davey does have the pulse of this clubhouse still mike Mike Rizzo also said this which I thought was wrong but it’s not you know it’s whatever i’ll tell you what he said mike Rizzo I’m paraphrasing here said the rebuild did not start until we traded Juan Sodto wrong wrong by a million miles so wrong it started when you traded away M sherzer who was probably your best player in franchise history you trade away Trey Turner your franchise shortstop who we all said “Well we’re letting Anthony Rendone walk and Bryce Harper walk but we’re going to sign Trey Turner because he’s not a Scott Boris guy.” Wrong you traded him away and you traded Max Scherzer away which you should have done with Max Scherzer by the way the rebuild started in 2021 that’s when it started you did not go into 2022 thinking this team could win never not once did you believe in that not once did you believe that that team in 2022 would win it was the worst team in baseball i expected them to be a bottom five team but that team was pretty much lifeless and honestly that’s how it should be in a rebuild you should be bad you should be awful you should bottom out and honestly trading Juan Sodto was the best thing to happen to this team because if we were here today without McKenzie Gore without James Wood without CJ Abrams we would be in a totally different scenario people would be checked out there would be 7,000 people there at night maybe and there would be nothing to watch for quite literally nothing you’d have Dylan Cruz and you’d have Brady House and I guess Key Barise that’s it you would have nothing to show for it so the rebuild it did not start in 2022 it started in 2021 and 2021 I’ll give them credit they went into that season thinking they could they could win i thought they could win in 2021 they had some talent and also their record showed it they were two games above 500 at one point in the summer but then everything came crashing down the walls caved in and that’s when the rebuild started when you traded Sherzer and you traded Turner and then the next trade deadline you trade away Juan Sodto for a huge hole that has saved this organization that is quite frankly probably saved Mike Rizzo his job and Dave Martinez for that matter so Mike Grizzo he’s not going to say what you want to hear he was never going to go out there and say “Fire Davy Martinez you guys are right.” That was never going to happen i never expected that and if you expected that you shouldn’t have because that was never going to be the case but the frustrations of right now and where the Nationals are they’re mounting and this mountain right now I mean it’s above the camera you can’t even see it the frustrations are out there i have never seen this fan base riot the way that they have the past few days i have never seen the fan base on Twitter at the ballpark boo as much as they have you would think Bryce Harper is playing every single day the way that this fan base is booing right now no it’s literally just for Dave Martinez and also the product on the field cuz the players have not been great they have not been but when you’re a figurehead of this organization like Mike Rizzo and like Dave Martinez Mike Rizzo said it himself in this interview when things are going wrong the blame goes on me when things are going right the praise is on me i agree with that we praise Mike Rizzo for the 2010s but right now he’s taking his hits and Dave Martinez is also and they should this is the time where they’re going to have to take their medicine and if they get swept by the Rockies like I don’t know you’ve lost your first two games you got to win today you simply i mean I’ve never seen in fact the Nationals last night their first time in a nine-inninging game at home the first time ever that they have given up seven home runs in nine innings i mean it was bad yesterday it was bad six runs in the seventh inning it was awful it was nasty every bad word in the book you could apply to yesterday’s game it was bad fortunately enough for the Nationals you can only go up from here i’m not going to tell you that they’re going to win today but with Mitchell Parker on the mound someone who has been relatively cold as of late this is the time for Mitchell Parker to just step up go seven innings pitch and give up one earned run someone on this team has got to step up give a team speech and say “We’re tired of this you’re tired of this we need to win if I’m a veteran leader in that clubhouse if I am Josh Bell if I am hell Karuise if I’m McKenzie Gore I am going into the clubhouse today i am calling a playersonly meeting we are hashing things out we are calling people out and we are trying to get on the same page that is what this is about right now the Nationals are not going to be a playoff team we have seen that it’s evident we know it but something has got to change you cannot get stomped on and chewed out by the Colorado Rockies for a third straight game you simply cannot have that happen and if it does happen what do you say not much you cannot say much at this point tonight’s game all eyes are going to be on Mitchell Parker all eyes are going to be on the Nats offense and all eyes are certainly going to be on Dave Martinez and if I’m Davy Martinez I am driving over to the ballpark and I am hoping that this offense wakes up because quite frankly nothing has been working for the Nationals as of late but this offense they’ve got
