Head Coach Jordan Ott Sit-Down Interview | Phoenix Suns
yeah definitely excited that this opportunity came in Phoenix um but yeah I mean it’s just been an incredible week um the whole whirlwind of it all from the emotions of of getting it the phone call people reaching out to having my family we all came down Friday then my parents came in uh the last couple days so all of us being together my my sister from North Carolina a best friend from home so those things are are are special unique especially as a basketball coach it doesn’t happen very often just with our schedule so um yeah been a great week i think all of it uh you know um the organization who it’s led by um Fiji who I’ve got to know really well over this process what he’s about how he works which is exciting for me how detailed he is and then what we’re building and um we all heard Matt loud and clear in his in his press conference that that’s not how he wants to be and that’s not what he wants to be about which aligns and fits with what I want to do and how I want to play so um yeah bringing that back step by step that’s exciting yeah the the scheme the defensive scheme against Deon Booker don’t let him touch it so especially when I was in the West and had to play multiple times then also preseason games those two years in LA just how elite he is at every level of um on the offensive end and now getting to help expand his game and find new solutions to those defenses um and work hand in hand with them um again he’s in his prime great opportunity for us to move forward with him side by side so offensively specific I think I’ve been a part of teams that had the most passes per game least passes this year we were you know in Cleveland bottom five in passes know an incredible rim team in LA where we just got to the rim got to the free throw line to this past season in Cleveland being elite three-point shooting team so I think I’ve seen the gamut of of offense and defensive styles um you know an important piece of how we want to play our system will be based on our personnel sure you want to play um a 2025 style of offense and defense but it’s really building through your players to highlight their strengths i don’t think there’s any type of success in basketball without playing hard and we have to demand it um from our players and some of that comes from um our collaboration on the front end this is exactly how how we want to play and then it’s our job as coaches and my job as the head coach to then hold them accountable once we set the standard because we all agree this is how we want to do it once it’s dipped below that’s our time to hold hold the line bring them back up to our expected line of this is how we’re doing things um so that’s what I want the fans to feel is this is a group that plays hard and plays together when you say the word identity that’s more the end result of it and I think there’s so many steps along the way that we have to take on a day-to-day basis to get to that type of identity i have to lead it out in front our staff has to be about it and we’re all going to create this environment um that these guys feel like they’re being supported and as a result they’ll go out there and play as hard as they possibly can i think it’s already started you know before I even got here you can tell that the guys are in the gym i think that starts with our front office communicating clearly of what the expectations are going forward so that’s helpful as helpful for me that’s coming in um in the middle of the summer um I think it’s just the dayby-day approach like enjoy being in the gym enjoy getting better and showing the players that they can get better here and we’re going to help them get to the next level and then in the meantime get to enjoy the city of of of Phoenix um during the summer and do it together you know you got these young guys which is really cool to see like they’re friends and have them hang out outside of the walls then it just organically builds um you get small little wins over the course of the summer to put you in a place where as you head into the season that you know and you feel something different i think I just want them to know that that um I’m extremely excited i’m honored um incredibly grateful for this responsibility to be the head coach of the Phoenix Suns and and we will day by day work to build something special here in Phoenix
