Legendary Former NFL head coach Dick Vermeil on the Philadelphia Eagles Being The BEST of the Best
we are still uh basking in the glory of the Philadelphia Eagles winning the Super Bowl but then of course you know this you know this league the NFL is the league that never sleeps so right after the Super Bowl ends we start thinking about what’s next and how you repeat so I’m curious uh what sort of motivational tactics do you think this team could try to take in order to repeat because we know how difficult it is to play an entire season into the month of February and then have to get right back 7 months later well I think if any team is prepared to do it it’s probably our Eagles you know when you were as dominant as you were the year before uh you can afford to maybe not be quite as good as you were but still be good enough but I think this team has the potential to equal what they’ve already done but you know they’re going to have to stay injuryfree they’re going to have to maintain that discipline that they’ve developed and the culture that they’ve developed in believing in themselves and and and the work ethic and these kind of things and and the defense has to maintain that edge with a few roster changes you know the offense really what lost the right guard and that was about it but uh you know I think they I think they can do it again it’s the thing is it’s not so much their motivation it’s how much they motivate by being world champion how much they motivate each opponent you five games of the schedule this year uh you bet that they’re going to motivate Dallas they’re going to motivate Kansas City they’re going to motivate the Chargers and they’re going to motivate Tampa Bay they’re going to motivate Denver you know uh because of their stature in the league and that’s just the way it is but uh I I believe uh we are in a position to at least compete for the same status we had last year and and maybe even repeat it yeah coach trying to repeat is it better to have a really really young team that has already won and it tasted that success or can that sometimes be something that intoxicates young players to where they maybe take their eye off the ball because the success came too early i think it’s the the coach’s job to make sure that to like the statement you used to not take the eye off the ball the coaches know their players real well and they know what they can do well and they know what they need to improve on and I believe that the caliber of staff that Nick has put together the Fangio and staff and those guys uh they will know what each player has to improve on to be better than they were and practices especially with the number of coaches they have will be designed to help these guys get a little bit better but uh they’re going to have to be because everybody they play as I’ve already said is going to be more motivated this year than ever before play against them you mentioned that the Eagles have everybody coming back on offense except for right guard how much does that help a firsttime play caller in Kevin Patulo having that sort of continuity well you know number one talent makes a difference in winning and losing there there are no teams in the NFL are poorly coached okay and the teams that have the best talent are consistently the most consistent team at competing for the playoffs and then on into the Super Bowl and there probably was not a more talented team in football than the Eagles last year to me the Eagle team was the best team in the history of the Eagle organization and I think most people agree with me on that but uh you know getting back there’s so many other variables that that you know the injury factor they got through the season pretty healthy you know it’s that’s hard to do but they got through it healthy they got through it improving every game all the way into you know look at the quarterback how well he played at the end of the year my god he he was an allp procure player on those last games and uh you don’t lose your ability to do that now the new coordinator it’ll be a test for him to match that but I I think they can improve hey number one improving uh the quarterback’s efficiency in preventing the uh sack you know there’s no way that Jaylen Herz should be that rated that poorly in prevention of the sack and that has to do sometimes with with coaching and what they’re asking him to do and what they’re telling him to do when he’s in trouble with the ball and where to go so I I think that’s going to be the easiest thing they have to improve to improve the offense coach you know the expression if it ain’t broke don’t fix it and last year the Eagles offense was a little unorthodox for the modern day NFL they were dominating teams by lining up and saying “See if he can stop us,” and running Saquon down their throat so would you want to change what you do offensively to throw the ball more to be more dynamic through the air when teams can’t seem to be able to stop what you already do best no I wouldn’t change i’d add to it i’d add a more a drastic play action game off that I’d probably use a little more uh quarterback under center and uh that’s just my feeling but uh they were so dominant in the running game without offensive line how could they not be and that really makes it easy on a signal caller when you know that you can run the football whenever you’re in question of what you should call you call some kind of a running play because you can run the ball you’re taking advantage of the finest offensive line of football it would be you know it wouldn’t be good coaching to not put the the pressure on the best players would and the Eagles have some very elite players and if they stay healthy with that offensive line those skilled guys are going to be excellent again coach uh you know very well about The Greatest Show on turf think you were the head coach of that team how far off just on paper is this Eagles team to that between Isaac Bruce Tory Holt you have AJ Brown and Devonte Smith Marshall Faulk incredible running back so is Saquon Barkley do you see comparisons between that team and this current Eagles team this team uh our team was more of finesse team this is a more powerful team this is a better running team a more dominating on the line of scrimmage type team uh no and and we had a good defense we were number six in the league that year on defense in the last couple games of the season our defense really won the football games for us and you’ve got But there’s no better defense last year than our Eagle defense so I I think this is a better football team yeah wow love hearing that how’s the wine business coach it’s struggle a little bit right now the wine world right now is down in California i think all through the United States you know the kids are drinking these canned drinks with a little alcohol in them and all these different things and uh it’s it’s down a little bit hopefully it’ll rebound but we’re so small it doesn’t matter we haven’t made any money yet so it doesn’t matter all we do is make good wines and pay our bills yes you do and look they’ll mature kids coach of all the reds would you give me a top three favorite reds or red blends for you from you not just from your winery but if you were to choose you’re looking at a red wine what is your top three well the trouble is those top story wines are so expensive today I don’t buy them but I’m talking I’m not talking about I’m not talking about like like for me I’m going Malbeck and Shiraz and stuff like that well you know I I would stick with the the the Cab California Cabernet the Napa Valley Cabernet there’s some fine ones in the Sonoma County i’m getting more involved a little bit in in the Russian River Sonoma County Penino Wars okay you know I I really like those and there’s so many of them right now but uh I I lean that way i’m not a Savinol Blond drinker i I I like Chardonnay we We make a good Chardonnay the grapes don’t come from the Napa Valley they come from uh the Russian River area Sonoma County uh so you know it’s all a matter of a taste really it is some people like chocolate some people like strawberry and you can like a nice Cabernet and just really say how good it is and another person drink the same thing and not like it so you know we all have different varieties of taste buds and uh that dictates what we the flavors we like when we drink different ones yeah you’re the man coach we appreciate the time as always uh we’ll be bugging you again down the road thanks coach thanks coach all right thank you bye-bye there he is dick File on the Hey everybody Eagles got rid of all their elite defensive guys except for Carter! Idk how the eagles won’t be worse!
You can trust the Eagles "process"… the Sixers, not so much.
