all right we’ll be back to get this one started after this coming up on the first pitch and today on the hill Dylan Cease what should we keep an eye on here it’s always interesting to see how he utilizes all of his pitches and how many of those he has a good feel for on that given day when he’s right he’s really able to keep hitters guessing and all of his stuff seems to be coming out of the same arm slot the same tunnel and that can make life very difficult on his opponents hard ground ball base so a runner aboard to start the inning well clearly he was ready to hit right there wasn’t able to elevate that one but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield there’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that now it’s the shortstop bobby Whit Jr third baseman playing on the edge of the grass looking for the sack bunt swing and a miss ground ball right side could be two fires to second for one throw to first but he beat it first base vinnie Pascantino and now the first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino definitely wants to stay out of the double play here ball on the ground in the infield should be an inning ending double play that one fouled off might want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good VLOO now moved to first and he dives back in safely just off the inside edge hoo he never moved cuz he never had time to with that kind of velocity you’d prefer that pitcher work away [Music] the 1-1 is fouled off and a swing and a miss and there are two down and the batter now Salvador Perez [Applause] yeah that’s fouled off tried to check his swing there now an appeal to first and no swing says Joe McDonald two outs off the mark there and a count two on one fouled off down the right side i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up in the dirt but kept close and now a man into scoring position getting the out was never going to be easy the wild pitch outside made things very difficult behind the plate and it turned into a stolen base opportunity so now two on and two outs just missed his spot on the inside right there first and second two outs mike El Garcia digs in now fast ball for a strike [Music] ripped but a curls foul two aboard two outs ball one there not close with that one and it’s two and two that’s inside jack Kaggle Leone in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here with the lead runner at second perez on first with two down and he couldn’t hold back he’s rung up on strikes sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results and right there thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam and we’re back today’s starting pitcher Seth Lugo chris how about a scouting report great sinker although it’s not his primary pitch it’s really a pitch that he can go to misses the barrel of the bat gets ground balls and lets the defense work behind him bottom of the first and the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr tatis Jr this guy who grew up in big league clubouses got to be a nice feeling Sigy when your father played in the big leagues and he passes down all that wisdom delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 i can only imagine the comfort level of being in the ballpark for those kids who are fortunate enough to have a dad that played in the big leagues them being on the baseball field for some it’s pressure for them they feel that they are right at home next pitch in the dirt two balls two strikes fouled off the plate they’ll do it again [Music] hit pretty well in the air out to center isbel sizing this one up makes the catch and there’s one gone as we take a look at the Padres’s lineup this is a veteran le lineup right here a lot of players with plenty of experience singy yeah no doubt about that Boo these players have been around the game for a long time and they may not have the flash that they once did but they’ve got the wisdom to be able to understand different situations be able to think with the opponent and sometimes in front of the opponent and you always seem to see a team like this they come to the ballpark they know how to get down to business and they understand what the job is at hand luis Arazz now in the box comes up empty with a swing there and a swing and a miss that one outside and it’s one and two swing and a miss struck him out and there’s two away i got to think that was the plan all the way he set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curveball down low to get him swinging now especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days that’s a devastating combination now Machado up here first pitch and he just misses and there’s a ball two out base is empty right down to shoot two and one now he must have been looking for something else cuz he gave up on that pitch a little early it was right down Main Street probably not going to see a better pitch to hit in this at bat hard hit left side whit over to first machado out on the play and that is that padres’s go down quietly we played an inning no score back here in San Diego all set for the start of the inning now it’s the rookie DH Jack Kaggle Leone cease 29 years old and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2014 ce back to work and there’s a foul ball [Music] freddy Ferguson behind the dish calling the balls in strikes [Music] misses inside two balls in a strike yeah i mean he’s a guy that has a reputation for being fergicious yes and you know whatever fergalicious and he chases that one and he’s registered three Ks in this one drew Waters stands in and that misses one and0 one out base is empty and another ball [Music] that one’s spoiled and the count now two and one one down base is empty on the ground lays out but he can’t squeeze it no throw and they catch a break as they get a base runner at first well patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count and now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases and now John Rae just missed And the one that one is upstairs Chris with that distraction and the speedy guy at first he’s in a favorable hitters count well if nothing else I mean this is a runner on the go swing and a highf fly ball to left sheets hauls it in for the two away batting center Kyle Isel so two down now and here is Kyle Isbel let’s go first pitch misses swing and a high-fly ball right field merryill makes the grab and that is that so one left for Kansas City we’ll go to the bottom of the second no score and welcome back to the ballpark ready to go for the last half of the inning and now the center fielder Jackson Merrill come on let’s do this and a foul ball it’s so hard to slow yourself down when you see that juicy breaking ball but the most success happens when you try to take that right back up the middle approach fouled off he was late and that’s how they get their first base runner of the game gavin Sheets the next up for the Padres’s sheets [Applause] fast for a strike nobody out runner at first pickoff throw and he’s back in safely comes up empty that’s strike two with two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here outside and the count is one and two battling here as he fouls it away that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was swaying in a ball line to center and there’s one away batting six the short stop Xander Bogarts it’s Xander Bogarts now first pitch doesn’t find the zone you don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one and it’s even up tapped at the plate but it’s a foul ball second inning here no score hacks and misses it’s a strikeout oh that slider down and away it’s just kind of a slow death with two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate you know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it tell you what sometimes you just have to tip your cap now here’s Jake Croninworth and that’s outside and that’s ball one merrill leads off first with two down to the inning next offering is in for a strike was good pitch there really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it you get a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout fights it off he’ll see another [Music] two outs got him that K is his third of the game so there on the mound see if he continues to climb the ladder makes the catch one down they put a really good swing on that pitch and hit the ball hard you know line drives won’t always find a hole but the more you can hit the ball like that with good exit VO the better off you’re going to be in the long run whit in the box with one away as he takes ball one ripped to short bogarts with the throw to first and a couple of quick outs well he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good execution and next up for the Royals Vinnie Pasquantino struck out swinging his first time and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter swing and a ball ripped right field and that one back and that one is gone a solo shot and they grab the lead it’s one- nothing that was blasted absolutely no doubt off the bat this one absolutely screamed out of here singy a laser stackcast tells us it was 112 miles an hour off the bat yeah it left in a real hurry and didn’t go that far because of the launch angle being a little flatter but clearly it had all the velocity it needed to leave the yard perez at the plate now that’s ball one swing and a miss strike one well there’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see and he guessed wrong right there nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end and a ball in two strikes and down on strikes he’s notched four strikeouts now royals strike first on this solo homer it’s now one- nothing you’re watching Major League Baseball on the show and we’re back bottom of the inning now the DH for the Padres luis Compusano that clips a corner that’s outside that one down the line and it goes just foul fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts he’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field he was out in front there just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track good pitch for the strikeout martine Maldonado up to hit breaking ball inside and it’s one and0 one down base is empty and another ball go and that is out of play make it four strikeouts in a row just cruising along oh that high fourseam fast ball has become such a great pitch for pitchers to finish hitters off they’re trying to stay back with two strikes make sure that they can handle something off speed and just with good spin rate good rotation through the zone elevate it a little bit get a lot of swings and misses and that’s a really nice job right there tatiz in the box now no balls in a strike worm burner into the outfield for a knock and that keeps the inning alive now batting first baseman luis Arise stands in he’s 0 for one there’s a strike well in this situation the hitter knows that he’s got to find a pitch that he can drive in order to drive in that tying run all the way from first base so if he can’t do that keep the line moving through a walk or just a base hit but you got to stay within yourself lugo keeping him close on the ground to third to second India and that is the inning one left for San Diego they’re down one- nothing back here in San Diego now the third baseman Mikel Garcia garcia just missed well these Royals doing a great job Boo of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way and I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him he’s only given up one run but the starter’s pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense just missed you know sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage and that might be the case today highf fly ball lifted in the air right field one down [Applause] now batting number 14 and next is the designated hitter Jack Kaggle Leone his first at bat was a strikeout there’s a strike action in the pen down there jason Adam preparing to come on if needed estrada getting loose as well there’s the strike he doesn’t seem to like to pitch up hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches 02 count now i think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there that one missed that’s off the inside corner and now two balls and two strikes foul ball left side he’ll see another some real good life going through the zone on that one and there’s a ball base is empty one away top half of inning number four swang and a miss struck him out now five strikeouts for him on the mound up next and to the plate for Kansas City Drew Waters reached on an infield single his first time pitch misses and that is ball one and another ball last couple of pitches breaking balls away i think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count just missed that’s ball four tried another fast ball but missed the spot one of the things about that two-out walk the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead so a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best that is if you are the offensive side of it brave batting for the second time and that’s strike one he’s pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success but you can never predict baseball way out front for strike two quickly in an 02 count you’ve got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball put it in play somewhere then you got a chance smoked on the ground to second croninworth throws on to first third out and that ends the frame royals leave one but they hold a one- nothing lead and welcome back to the ballpark john Chabi and Chris Singleton with you and leading off the bottom of the fourth Manny Machado let’s go Padres that one finds the zone strike one doublebarreled action in the bullpen lucas Air the hard throwing righty is up and loosening lynch a left-hander also throwing and a big swing and a miss and that one a little below the knees and the count one and two lined and that’s a base hit off to a good start with a leadoff nine seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there nice job going the opposite way with it letting the ball travel and not allowing the barrel to hook around the ball it’s so frustrating when you see a good pitch and your hands roll over it was on the outside part of the plate and he approached it perfectly jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s that one is absolutely belted his belt flying after this one and he’s got a double that skips over the fence so it’s an automatic double off the bat i thought they were going to score their first run of the game and that feels like a tough break but look at the bright side really good contact at the plate and now they’re working with not just one but two runners in scoring position so they’d love another base hit right here so the go ahead run in scoring position now the left fielder Gavin Sheets runner stops at third and they’re at the corners with nobody out well we’re starting over again all tied up challenged him with the fast ball right in the heart of the zone and he was clearly ready to jump all over it and here is Xander Bogarts struck out swinging his first time fast ball for a strike and it’s 0 and one [Music] swinging a foul back and that’s out of play with a go ahead run at third we’re here in the bottom of the fourth that one way outside ball one bounced and that got the pitcher to first and he beats it everyone’s safe and now they’ll hustle out to check on him that was quite a shot he took as you see him down on the knee yeah clearly in some real pain but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn’t have to it’s looking to me like he’s going to try to shake it off and continue here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot seth Lugo will depart and he leaves with the bases loaded so he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him new pitcher now Lucas he has a great slider with tons of movement jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s golden opportunity right here and that’s a strike swing and a miss as he was out front that time bows it back with two strikes man he’d like to have that pitch back swing and a miss struck him out and an excellent job keeping it right there no when you follow up a tripledigit fast ball with a nasty change up pretty much every time the hitter is going to be in trouble that was the plan get him to sit dead red on the fast ball and then just make him look foolish with the off speed stuff luis Compusano the next up for the Padres’s he struck out swinging at his first atbat and that one fouled off merrill at third sheets at second bogarts over at first with one away and a strike right through there that one at triple digits strike three and that’s two in a row certainly a strikeout situation right there the infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate pretty big two out at bat coming up now next it’s the catcher for the Padres’s Martine Maldonado 0 for one but he struck out swinging last time in there and it’s 0 and one two outs bases are full next offering is in for a strike perhaps not quite ready to hit first two pitches by him for a couple of strikes now back is against the walls going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes they limit the damage here but the RBI single pushes across a run call even now at 1-1 you’re dialed into the show we’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth jason Adams and we all know about his slider it’s just filthy man and one of the better ones in the game I’d say spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton kyle Isbel now at the plate fly to center his first time and the first pitch misses for ball one and that one fouled off kicks and fires swing and a tapper that rolls foul swings and miss has struck him out boi just ran out of patience there he took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes but that time chased outside the zone jonathan India getting ready to hit one for two that one’s upstairs ball one one down base is empty chopped left side throws across the diamond and the first two set down in the top of the fifth now batting shortstop Bobby Wit Jr so up now for Kansas City bobby Wit Jr bowl for two in this one now this guy a player that if he gets on base has the ability to really be aggressive getting around the base paths check swing and he went strike one adam 33 years old and he was a fifthround pick back in 2010 two down dolman out to short bogarts whips it to first royals set down in order nothing doing for the offense that time last half of the fifth coming up all tied 1-1 back here at Petco Park fernando Tatis Jr to hit here it’s good speed at the top of the order here you want to get it on see if you can get a stolen base maybe get around the bases and pick up a run just off the inside edge that was absolute gas triple digits on the gun it’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by up the middle india in plenty of time to first and they take care of Tatis for the out now batting first baseman Luise Az now the number two hitter Luis Araz known for his late inning heroics that’s down and in a slider missed definitely a swing and miss slider down and in he finished that really well just couldn’t get him to offer at it out there to center is belt on the move makes a nice grab at a full sprint and there’s two away nothing instills more confidence in a team than a center fielder who makes a great play like that on the run they can feed off the energy he brings just from his playmaking abilities [Applause] machado stands in now and watches strike one hit hard on the ground to short over to first and the inning is over nothing doing here this half we’re through five all tied 1-1 top of the sixth inning and here’s the first baseman vinnie Pasquantino adam back to work right through there for a strike a little out front there as he swings through it [Applause] knocks that one away and will do it again foul ball still 0 and two sets him down looking that was pretty nasty now that And now it’ll be the cleanup spot for the Royals salvador Perez he is struck out and he is walked pitch is in there going one fought off foul one down base is empty popped up machado he makes the catch and there’s two down now third base and next up for the Royals Mikel Garcia in there at the knees and that’s strike one swing and a foul out of play next pitch is outside hard hit left side bogarts with the throw to first and it’s a one two three inning nothing across here this half to the bottom of the six we go 456 coming up all tied 1-1 daniel Lynch comes on now bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit classic bullpen move right here so we’ll see how it works out so now it’s a strikeout gavin Sheets the next to hit picked up an RBI in his last at bat still their only run of the game so far swinging a drive deep right field on the move racing back has room and he makes the catch up next for the Padres yeah and here comes Xander Bogarts sander Bogarts and ball one movement in the bullpen taylor Clark getting ready to go shriber also getting ready trying to send this to extra innings that one hammered but pulled fouled they had a foul ball next offering upstairs really good take especially with two strikes keeps the atbat going with a foul ball oh and this one’s blasted high Envy it’s on its way out of here ball game he sends a rocket to left and the Padres’s walk it off [Applause] hitting a walk-off homer is the kind of thing you dream about growing up you’re in the backyard you’re creating the most pressure-packed scenario and what do you do you come through with the big swing well he was living a childhood moment right there nice swing of the bat
