just about set to go and our starting pitcher here today Dylan Cease and Singy that may be his name but the strikeout is his game well Boo I can tell you’ve been working on that one but yes you are right this guy strikeout per nine over 11 i mean that’s just getting it done there are a lot of strikeouts in that other lineup and when you look at what he’s able to do man it’s going to be a fun one to watch today jonathan Indie at the plate and that one fouled off the one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike and that’s in for a strike next pitch not close up high and that skips in the dirt ground ball up the middle that’s a base hit solo runner aboard to start the inning timing on the swing was good able to shoot the ball up the middle didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked but that’s a good approach paying off now here’s Bobby Whit Jr this guy is one of the best athletes in the sport ce checks over to first and he’s back that’s a strike it’s 0 and one ruer at first with no outs here come on delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 all right now he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls but at this point he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone next offer is down low good spot there but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone nobody out runner at first ground ball could be two over to second for one how about that double play very fast developing play right there no margin for error nice double play on a fast runner up the line mikel Garcia steps in for the Royals just missed and that one missing low way upstairs and now three and 0 two out space is empty the right-hander gives up the two out walk definitely lost the handle during that sequence four pitches for the walk and that last one didn’t even threaten the zone catcher might want to go talk to him pasquantino so two down vinnie Pasquentino will hit next lift it in the air right field tatis moving under it makes the grab and that is that so one left for Kansas City and now the Friars will get their first chance no score back after this on the show back here at Petco Park and on the mound now Michael Waka and this will be a tough test for him pitching on the road has not been that kind to his numbers well I think he’s just got to trick himself mentally and put himself in a comfort level like he does at home i know it’s not the same being on the road as away from home in terms of being able to have a routine and be consistent with it but this game is so much mental and he’s going to have to find a way to play a mind game with himself to move through this ball game and get a W [Music] and a swing to miss top of the order speedster you’d really like to see him work his way on he can get around the bases in a hurry but a little too aggressive maybe a little anxious [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] tatis waits outside low and the count is two and two this guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat he just battles up there he doesn’t take a pitch off at all makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there you can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away swing and a miss had him out front for the strikeout batting second stands in oh Roy called strike right there one down base is empty and that’s downstairs and outside one and one the one-1 is fouled off and they’ll do it again one out base is empty out of the ground to third throws to first and the home first moving along quickly today two gone let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup they do a lot of things well in this offense Sigy they control the strike zone they make pitchers work hard for outs and as a result one of the better OBP teams in the league well what I love about it is it’s an organizational philosophy whether you go to instructional league whether you go to spring training you see these guys even during batting practice when it doesn’t matter they’re practicing that type of approach boo and when you have that filtering through the organization even when you call off a player he steps right in and continues with the pattern that they have established at this level which ultimately leads to a lot of success down the line and that lands in no man’s land a foul ball come on Manny the wind and the pitch this one smacked out to left center waters grabs it on the run padres’s down in order we played an inning no score back here in San Diego second inning set to go so up now for Kansas City salvador Perez ce back to work and that drops in for a strike there it was oh here it is hit it he gets a take gets ahead in the count right through there for a strike eric Summersgill with home plate duty of this one kind of known for being generous with the corners Chris you know I think that used to be a lot bigger deal in past eras where pitchers were working more in and out with their pitches but yeah we’ll see if those corners come into play in this one hey no pitcher’s going to argue at all that one down the line and it goes just foul swings through him for the K slider got him for strike three and to the plate for Kansas City Jack Kaggleó first pitch misses ce certainly has electric stuff considered by many to be a strikeout pitcher he might not be at the top level in that category but strikeouts a big part of his game towards first dives and he can’t hang on flip to the pitcher is in time and they get it out on the play this is what it’s all about on that right side of the diamond when you got the first base involved and the pitcher as well first baseman does a great job knocks the ball down gets away from a little bit doesn’t panic the pitcher’s exactly where he’s supposed to be nice feed and a nice play for the out two down base is empty and next up for the Royals Freddy Fine clips the corner strike one and he doesn’t beat himself i mean he’s going to throw strikes he’s not going to issue many free passes and he’s going to keep the ball in the ballpark so when you look at that he’s not completely preventing guys from hitting home runs but he’s so consistent that you look up by the time he gives the ball over it’s the sixth or seventh inning and there’s one or two runs on the board at most this one popped up bulgarts he’s got it and that is out number three offense held in check there now to the bottom of the second no score and we’re back to the bottom of the second now the left fielder Gavin Sheets sheets come on that one outside one and0 yeah that’s too high [Applause] in today’s game not that many fast ball counts but hitters still in the back of their minds they’re looking for one two change up call right there excellent pitch selection to go with now all even up inside just missed recognized that change up right out of the hand just spit on it stays alive i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up [Music] swing and a miss and a change up in the dirt for me down to first in time to get him one away in the strikeout he’s really good hitting the baseball the other way so credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch clearly he had him fooled now here’s Jake five he’s faced well he’s definitely minimizing contact he can get the swing and miss when he needs it but he’ll also keep the defense fresh behind him allowing some balls in play as well it’s Ander waters looks like the weather could actually play a factor in this one it’s coming down pretty good yeah it is and it’s not too bad yet but the field’s not going to be able to hold off if the rain gets any worse than this so keep an eye on the pitcher mound as well and the rest of the infield start to puddle up a little bit next offering is in for a strike and that one upstairs ball one that’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind on the count next one in the dirt cuts and misses it’s a for him last season that one outside and that is ball one and there’s the strike that’s excellent location on the fast ball right there early in this game and if he can do that all game should be a good outing for him the other way makes the play and it’s out number three kc down in order and we are still scoreless back here at Petco Park as we go to the last of the third so digging in now for San Diego Trenton Brooks that’s in there that’s strike one fouled off but he was late that one just missing inside got to count one and two too close for me partner to take that O2 fast ball but for whatever reasons he let it go by he’s still in the at bat i don’t think he’ll let the next one go swings and misses make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today we’re going to take a look at the pitch sequence of that at bat and the thing to notice are the pitch locations every single one of them on the edges of the strike zone and as a hitter that can be pretty frustrating because you don’t expect a pitcher to be able to make quality pitches one after another like that and so those are tough spots to do damage in a great demonstration of pitch command and it got him a punch out that time swang and a ball lifted in the air india makes the grab and there’s two down now that’s a tough play for the infielder ranging back into the outfield there’s part of him that’s saying “Hey where you at outfielder call me off.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there bryce Johnson the next up for the Padres’s come on strike on the inside corner 0 and one next offering misses down and away one ball one strike still tied at zero last of the third [Applause] so a foul ball makes it one and two that one missed [Music] still two and two after the foul ball this guy’s seen two change ups in a row could be a little vulnerable for a fast ball right here popped in the air left field no trouble here puts it away for the out and that is that onto the fourth still scoreless as we go to the top of the fourth now here is Bobby Wit Jr singing he’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport how difficult is that to do well just look at the back of my bubble gum card you’ll see how hard it is these guys are great man they have the ability to look out there but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch those that can really sharpen things on the outer half those are the ones that become elite bulgart falls it in and there’s one away now batting the third baseman Mikel Garcia steps in for the Royals he reached out to walk his first time and there’s the strike right through there for a strike all tied up top half of inning number four [Applause] and a swing and a miss and he’s registered three Ks in this one made quick work of him right there Siggy i know that’s the kind of bat maybe leaves a lot of fans wondering what was he doing up there right yeah and I get that i mean you take two straight strikes then chase one way out of the zone it’s It’s just not a good at bat it’ll leave you shaking your head as a hitter if not worse spot there’s always going to be those trips to the plate where you’re just lost up there and that was one of them for sure next to Vinnie Pasquantino swang in a line drive that’s a base hit into center field and they have their first hit since the first inning now batting the designated hitter dominant performance for him today boo just two hits allowed so far no runs across either and he’s had an answer for just about every hitter he’s faced so I don’t think this hit is going to knock him off his stride too much and now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate went down on strikes his first time through ball one no strikes this hitter loves attacking the first pitch so not giving him something to hit is a good move next offering is in for a strike [Applause] [Music] and there’s a ball that’s down in a slider missed here’s an opportunity to do some damage and perhaps unlock this offense 3-1 count be ready to turn on a fast ball so now two on and two outs the right fielder number 14 Jack and to the plate for Kansas City Jack Kaggle Leone he’s 0 for one [Applause] that one a little bit high ball one that’s through there for a strike [Applause] on the ground right side croninworth in plenty of time to first and he has thrown four shut out innings so it’s no runs on a hit no errors and two are left and midway in the fourth we’re tied nothing nothing [Applause] back here in San Diego John Chambi and Chris Singleton with you and leading off the bottom of the fourth Fernando Tatiz Jr junior [Music] check swing on the first pitch appeal down to first no swing says Freddy Ferguson in the air right side this one could be trouble around first heading for two and it’s a leadoff double for their first hit of the game nice job going the opposite way with it letting the ball travel and not allowing the barrel to hook around the ball it’s so frustrating when you see a good pitch and your hands roll over it was on the outside part of the plate and he approached it perfectly runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game luis Aas digs in now fly ball down the line and that’ll fall for a base hit here comes Tatis around third and it’s one nothing mission accomplished there as he picks up the RBI to give him the lead he clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat just kind of muscled it out there and you know on the mound it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes here comes Manny Machado 0 for one so far and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike [Applause] arise on at first nobody else generally second third time through the lineup you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them looks like he’s doing a nice job of it swaging a ball hit out towards left center field makes a nice grab at a full sprint and there’s one down that’s a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch we all know those can be a little tricky especially if the wind’s swirling around out there here’s Gavin Sheets now left hand bat he’s 0 for one [Applause] swing and a miss knowing that the pitcher wants a ground ball double play opportunity here you’ve got to lay off pitches down in the zone right there swinging at that pitch that’s a no no next offering is downstairs i got one more man at first one away [Applause] that one ripped and foul ball pitch misses and it’s two and two and that’s downstairs and outside [Applause] spoils the two strike pitch and he’ll see another eighth pitch of the at coming up [Applause] gets a piece and stays alive [Applause] fouled off again and it remains three and two five foul balls in a row i have no idea what that feels like but you got to love this battle just wondering who’s going to blink first and a swing and a miss he picks up his fifth strike out on the hill varant speeds can be just as useful for a pitcher as movement as you see right there it really wasn’t a great location but the fact that the velocity change had the hitter off balance and that’s all you got to do sometimes croninworth batting for the second time and that’s strike one one run across in the frame so far we’re here in the bottom of the fourth and that one fouled off on the ground right side slings to first out number three but the RBI single pushes across a run it’s now one- nothing and we’re back new inning getting started and now Freddy for me for me cease back to work in there at the knees and it’s 0 and one well these Royals need to bring up the quality of their at bats and specifically their swings they’re trying to find ways to drive the ball with some authority but it’s just not happening for him so far zero extra base hits in the game so it’s been tough for him to get anything going the 1-1 is fouled off sometimes you have to keep chipping away until you break through but it’s a lot easier to put runs on the board when you have runners in scoring position because they put themselves there and that’s outside and that’s ball two goes down looking well that’s great execution of the pitch right there and the battery working together catcher does a nice job to present that to the umpire and get that called third strike and next up for the Royals Drew Waters and that one is downstairs and that’s ball one one down base is empty swinging a foul back that’s out of play get out of here boys the one-1 is fouled off that to right tatis drifts towards it carous out number two now at the plate Kyle Isbel grounded out his first time we haven’t seen a break in the weather and the umpires might be forced to make a decision soon yeah I think so really sure why he let that one go by i mean out of the hand it had a lot of the strike zone sure had some good armside run at the end to move to the outside part of the plate but with two strikes you got to be ready to swing it there and you can’t leave it in the umpire’s hands diaz stands in now and watches strike one two down nobody on last half of inning number five gets a piece there we’ll do off first with two down to the inning little bit low and another ball well I would expect in this three 0 count you’re taking all the way see if he’ll walk you fernando Tatis Jr on deck for the outs and that’ll load the bases it feels to me like his time on the mound is running short starting to show some signs of fatigue we’ll see how much longer they let him go now Luis Arise picked up an RBI in his last at bat still their only run of the game so far and that one’s a little bit low and that’s ball one two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them [Applause] little bit high and it’s 3 and 0 look in situations like these the air can get really thin up there at the plate got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down [Music] and there’s the automatic [Applause] [Music] ball forward and a comes in to score really got himself into a mess out there and now forces home a run with the wall this innings definitely getting away from him and the Royals manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move michael Waka will depart and they trail as he exits but he kept them close a new arm will be on the mound after the break now pitching to they turn things over to the southpaw well no margin for error in terms of throwing strikes with the bases loaded just has to execute one pitch at a time to try to get out of this here’s Manny Machado now two in this one machado [Applause] just missed base is loaded two down [Applause] and that one is in for a strike good offense got some runs across this is where you look for the starter to go out there have a shutdown inning don’t give that other team any hope uh you just hope that he can get through this inning get the bats back up there while they’re hot well the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there have a real quick inning get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot next offering upstairs I’ve gotten to call some incredible NLDS games here at Petco Park between the Padres’s and their fierce rivals the LA Dodgers nldds game four here in 22 when the Padres’s knocked off LA and then game four in 2024 when the Dodgers started their comeback and eventual run to the World Series one of the great fan environments in baseball and now it’s even up that’s good pitch there billy had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout [Applause] swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field tatis snags it and there’s one away oh I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning anything after that a hitter or two is bonus but they should be struck out and he is walked and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike well an at bat can be a little bit of a dance strike one here but few more pitches we’ll see how it turns out on the ground pitching for a strike and safe it’s a stolen base yeah I like being aggressive right there with two outs it’s kind of a classic steel situation you get thrown out no big deal that guy at the plate leads off the next inning now a single to the outfield can push a run across garcia at second with two down way out front for strike two it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today good fast ball excellent slider but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there now fly ball to right center and that’ll do it make it six shut out innings for him out there now it’s the Padres’s three and the Royals nothing and welcome back to the ballpark here’s the second baseman Croninworth croninworth croninworth measures 6 feet even 31 years old and he was drafted in the seventh round back in 2015 and that one upstairs ball one you know these Padres’s putting together some really good at bats in this game there’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate they really made that opposing starter work in this one ran his pitch count up and now they’ve got an opportunity to continue making things difficult on the head next offering in there for a strike and that’s strike two and no they haven’t broken through in a big way in the runs column but with the way they’re grinding out at bats it definitely feels like there’s potential for more coming and it’s filled up that one misses so a lead off walk you get a walk and you get a walk everyone gets a walk boo here comes X to the plate there you see his May and June numbers so far [Music] inside ball one misses again five in a row oh that’s out [Applause] and ball forward two aboard he did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire bat first and second no outs and here’s the first baseman Trenton Brooks another miss eight straight outside the strike zone first and second no outs here in the bottom of the sixth next offering is fouled back the one-1 is held up carl Dixon with the call there just missed his spot on the inside now the catcher and now it’s Elias Diaz [Applause] and a breaking ball drops in for a strike the opportunity for a huge inning exists right here base is loaded nobody out but as a hitter can’t be over anxious that pitcher is up against the wall make him come to you and that one fouled off they need a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup something but you got to make some pitches but if he can battle and get through this he can earn some points try to get him to chase on the change up that time he’s gone off speed he needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the zone popped up left side and the infield fly is called now batting center fielder Bryce they haven’t been able to figure out pitch sequences and it’s impacting them across the board oh can’t pick it up cleanly safe at first no play we’ll see how they score this the right field number and the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move dylan Cease gives way great effort out of him as he exits in line for the win we’ll tell you about the new pitcher when we get back now pitching for Jason Adams comes on now well he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year and that’s his first test this looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup jack Kaggle Leone steps in for the Royals he’s grounded out a couple of times gets the call going on yeah this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here try to close that gap but you know at the very least if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game [Applause] runs it up to 96 to record the punch out just overmatched on that fast ball right there and it wasn’t like he was set up for it by something off speed earlier in the at bat just came right after him with three straight and he had no answer for it and now the catcher comes up to him Freddy Fine and that is out of play [Music] the now one miss bullpen action for the Padres’s Nick Paveta the veteran right-hander appears to be loosening up Estrada getting loose as [Music] ground ball left side could be two flips it there’s one double play they can’t seem to break through inning over no runs one hit no errors and no one left seventh inning stretch time it’s the Padres’s three and the Royals nothing now pitching for the Taylor Clark takes over on the mound pretty tight game so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here got to do his best to keep the score right where it is so back to the top of the order now it’s Fernando Jr and go to six junior that one clips the outside corner and one and ball one just missing off the plate there according to the umpire and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation can’t say he’s convinced but it looks like he’s activity in the bullpen lucas Air up and loosening in the pen that one pushed foul out of play off to the left caught him looking for the K oh just a beautiful fast ball on the inside corner for that backwards K right there i think the hitter saw it all the way coming from that opposite arm angle i got to think he was looking away and just got locked up by the heart stuff boring in on his hands swinging a foul out of play swings with a fast ball up in the zone 02 is the count cut out and miss struck him out and good work there as he gets a one two three nothing doing for the offense that time we look ahead to inning number eight it’s the Padres’s three and the Royals nothing welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth jeremiah Estrada well he’s got electric stuff coming out of the pin his strikeout rate though is through the roof so far this season it’s Drew Waters steps in for the Royals the left fielder number eight Drew Waters and that’s through there for a strike it’s 0 and one it’s been tough for the offense so far but you can’t get frustrated you got to find a way to shake it off go up there and relax that’s the only way you’re going to be able to put runs up on the board and it’s strike two activity in the bullpen for San Diego robert Suarez the closer is getting ready and perhaps looking at a long save opportunity here [Applause] swings through that one it’s a strike out just blown away in that at bat three fast balls four strikes wasn’t even able to foul one off there’s not much you can take away from an at bat like that as a hitter other than maybe there’s something wrong with your eyes he’s got to have better timing on the fast ball next time and to the plate for Kansas City Kyle Isel has grounded out a couple of times and that’s in there at the knees got to keep things airtight defensively right here on your toes ready to make a play hey if you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead it should be a W one down base is empty late swing fouled to the left hit in the air center field johnson nabs it two up two down the batter number six second base Jonathan two outs base is empty and next up for the Royals Jonathan India swing and a miss 98 on the gun wow good luck catching up to that one [Music] next offering is in for a strike this guy’s pounding the zone bears don’t have time to think in between pitches he goes down looking so they go quietly there home half of inning number eight straight ahead it’s the Padres’s three and the Royals nothing back here in San Diego ready for the bottom of the eighth here’s the left fielder Gavin Sheets sheets clark back to work outside low and it’s one and0 nope inside ball two there’s a strike two balls one strike missed with a change up three and one [Applause] fast ball for a strike three and Duke lined into left center and that should be extra bases makes the turn and heads for second and he’s there with a leadoff double i’m sure he feels really good about that one man that feels so good to shoot an absolute bolt the opposite way split the gap and know that you’ve got extra bases right off the bat that’s the kind of thing hitters dream about when they’re falling asleep with that runner in scoring position no outs jake Cronin work the next up for the Padres’s that one’s in there strike one man at second oh that’s out tried to back door him with that slider right there but just missed off the plate good pitch though ball two not really attacking on the mound in this at bat all breaking balls so that makes me think they’re not really wanting to challenge him here in the dirt it gets to the back stop sheets up to third on the wild pitch even with a good secondary lead sometimes it’s hard to see just how far that ball’s gotten away from the catcher and if you can make it to third base pretty much standing up well that time he seemed to have a pretty good read gets to third safely and now he’s just 90 ft away from scoring at 96 that pitch is in for a strike [Music] battling here as he fouls it away and a payoff pitch and a foul ball he stays alive popped up to the left into foul ground he’s there he’s got it and there’s one down the batter number two shortstop Xander Bogart and a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts fly ball to the outfield for a sack fly soft ground ball to the right side find a hole he can attack this a few ways but the one thing he can’t do is strike out come on outside and that’s in for a strike one away with a runner at third here in the bottom half of the eighth inning highfly ball out into left center field squeezes it runner tags for home puts the tag on him and it’s a double play one hit in the inning but nothing more than that through eight full it’s the Padres’s three and the Royals nothing robert Suarez on to try and close it out well he’s the guy they hope to turn to the lock down win so this game has gone to plan more or less let’s see if he can wrap it up here and the batter will be the shortstop Bobby Wit Jr he’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors yeah the first offering a fast ball for a strike suarez in his fourth year he features a four seam fast a sinker a change up and occasionally uses a cutter wow triple digits on the gun i I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past but it’s still impressive to watch just off the outside edge [Applause] headed towards the corner and that’s a foul ball [Applause] spoils that one and it remains two and two [Applause] and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again foul ball another 2-2 upcoming also really good at bat what I like about this guy his bat stays in the zone for a long time gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches still two and two after the foul ball [Applause] that one just misses and a ground ball to first and it stays fair but when you see that many pitches in an at bat your chances of succeeding go up and right there we see the result man at first nobody out so up now for Kansas City mike El Garcia in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone well the laid off man gets on you want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two [Applause] next offering is fouled back ball one low on the ground to third might be two offbalance feed there’s one they get the double play and just one out to go now well that’s a huge ball to play to get the double play defensively just one more guy to get this save for the closer [Applause] last chance for the Royals vinnie Pasquantino getting ready to hit one for three that one finds the zone and that’s strike one [Music] two down to ground ball and this should do it throw to first ball game and the Padres’s claim the win here behind some great pitching and defense this is by no means an offensive outburst only four hits the entire game but good teams find a way to win and they did the
