we welcome you to Los Angeles Sunday baseball on the show it’s the Washington Nationals taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers and we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this so just about set now and today’s starter Clayton Kershaw and Singi it’s unique these days but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy yeah Boogie doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out he knows he needs to miss barrels get some soft contact let the defense do work behind him and I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo don’t give time to adjust or think they can move through a ball game and you look off they’re in line for a quality start we’ll see what he’s got in this one [Applause] cj Abrams leading things off and takes a strike popped up foul territory behind the play catcher tosses the mask settles under it and makes the grab and there’s one down here’s Dave Martinez line up for the Nationals a guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus Nathaniel Low well Boo there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does i mean batting over 400 with runners in scoring position are you kidding me i I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not and first off is fouled off for Kershaw the resume speaks for itself three Sai Young’s an MVP and one of the best sliders the game has ever seen oh and he hit him take him well now the best way to make them feel the pain is scoring from first look for a good secondary lead and an excellent jump when the ball’s in play and now James Wood run around to go and there’s no throw he’s in there at second with a stolen base [Music] [Music] and another ball the slider was not part of his arsenal when he debuted in 2008 he was a fast ball change up curveball guy but in May of 2009 at Wrigley Field in a bullpen session he decided to try a new pitch next offering is downstairs with AJ Ellis as his catcher mike Porzello as the coach he threw a couple of them it was near perfect right away and he started using the slider right from there in May of 2009 and ball four to a board he did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat batting fourth the designated hitter Andres first and second one out and here’s the DH for Washington andres Chaparo [Applause] and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike [Applause] two on one out high in the air out to right hernandez ranging after it makes the grab tags up from second and he’ll head to third now we’ll see if moving up to third there pays off for him he didn’t have to tag and go but now he can score a lot of different ways doesn’t have to be a base hit we’ll see what happens nathaniel Low up to hit possibly thinking about home run number 100 here he’s just one shy of that milestone [Applause] pitch misses and that’s ball one needs just one more homer to reach 100 in the big leagues lefty out of the stretch runners at first and third and a fast ball in there for a strike at 91 yeah making it to a 100 homers would be quite the career accomplishment for him out of the more than 20,000 players to take an at bat in the majors less than 5% have ever hit 100 dingers two on two outs slashed foul down the right side that’ll hook off into the seats [Music] kershaw deals spoils that one and it remains two and two brousario on third wood on first with two now [Applause] right side [Applause] edmond slings to first and that is the inning so they strand a pair the Dodgers coming up and we are scoreless back here in LA and pitching in this game McKenzie Gore what do we have on him well he’s putting together a really nice season on the mound erra in the low threes very respectable when you consider guys are looking to do damage they’re not trying to just walk and hit singles they’re trying to hit homers and draw walks and score runs so when you have a guy that can limit the other team from scoring more than a few runs that’s really tough to beat game in and game out and now here’s the Dodgers designated hitter Max Muny and a foul ball muny in his ninth season hitting leadoff in today’s game he’s usually a third baseman but today he’s the designated hitter little bit of a day off for him instead of being at the hot corner he can just kind of put the batting gloves on hold the bat as he sits on the bench waiting for his time to hit swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field so a runner aboard to start the inning really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat he got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point pretty impressive for an 02 count now it’s Mookie Betts first pitch just misses one and0 [Applause] and that’s outside ruer at first with no outs here ruer takes off this one in the dirt safe at second and he easily steals the bag i think that steel kind of sets the tone not just with this game but for the entire series first inning game one so that kind of tells me they’re going to be aggressive on offense and try to force the issue whenever they can [Applause] that one fouled off two and two i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up and Muki takes really good take especially with two strikes [Music] and ball four to a board well he took his chance at getting him to chase right there but with first base open walked out a bad thing set up a double play opportunity if he can induce a ground ball the batter now will be Will Smith and a strike on the outside edge [Applause] and that’s downed away [Applause] and the pitch and now two and one tough spot right here a couple runners on two ball count you can’t nibble but you have to execute and finish your pitch if you leave something out over the plate it’s going to bring in some runs [Applause] that one misses and that’s ball three way to lay off that pitch down [Applause] the 3-1 and they’re all loaded up his ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one oscar and now Tay Oscar Hernandez and that’s in there for strike one [Applause] there’s the strike they need a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup something but you’ve got to make some pitches but if he can battle and get through this he can earn some points [Applause] that’s inside well Boo early on in this one having a hard time getting settled in he’s not showing control to throw strikes let alone to throw where he wants in the strike zone this could be a tough one for him [Applause] base is loaded nobody out [Applause] that one 95 to finish him off andy Pah will hit next golden opportunity right here there’s the strike well they’re really running up the pitch count in this first inning lots of confidence from this team that is perhaps the hottest in baseball right now [Applause] quickly in an O2 hole you’re going to have to give something up here in terms of power if you want to put the ball in play with any authority [Applause] fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two [Applause] and delivers outside one ball two strike base is loaded one away [Applause] strike three and that’s two in a row certainly a strikeout situation right there the infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate pretty big two out at bat coming up now yeah here comes Tommy Edmund a switch hitter batting right i know we’re still early in the stages of this game but this at bat has the potential of being a difference maker you’ve got to stay calm in the box if they don’t pick up at least one run here this will be a very disappointing inning when you load the bases with nobody out you’ve got to get at least one run you’re thinking two to three so they need a big hit right here and that’s outside so they’re all loaded up with two outs and that one fouled off [Applause] that’s inside and it’s two in one look in situations like these the air can get really thin up there at the plate got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down [Applause] the two on is high ball four and a run comes in to score they obviously were in a pretty great spot to take the lead right there with the bases loaded and I’ll say that was a good patient at bat and draw the walk and you know what still counts as an RBI the batter will be Michael Conforto in there at the knees [Music] [Applause] squirts away a little bit nothing happening on the bases though swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt adams down to first that completes the strikeout inning over so they get one but end up leaving the bases loaded onto the second now from Dodger Stadium it’s the Dodgers one and the Nationals nothing [Applause] back here at Chavez Ravine second inning set to go up now for Washington brady House kershaw back to work fast for a strike [Applause] and there’s a ball larry Bullard making the calls behind the plate for us in this one pretty good strike zone well reviewed by those we talked to around the league yeah he’s an umpire he doesn’t get a lot of looks from players maybe here and there once in a while but he’s appreciated back there swings through that one i think he was sitting off speed there what about an umpire’s height how much of a role does that play in your experience in what the strike zone is like yeah I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit which you know as a former hitter you like that you wanted the ball up you didn’t want to have to deal with stuff down in the zone consistently and now it’s going to be Alex call that one way inside two and0 one down base is empty and that one’s a little bit low three and 0 and a fast ball in there for a strike at 91 breaking ball through there for a strike three balls two strikes and that one hit to first hernandez takes it himself two up two down in the top of the second betting eight catcher Riley Adams riley Adams the next to hit first pitch and he just misses i think he wanted that call on the upper part of the zone but just didn’t get it now he’s just trying to get a better feel for how much it missed so he can adjust his sights just a little bit and that drops in for a strike well a good slider from an opposite-handed pitcher has to stay in that tunnel just a little bit longer otherwise recognition can cause you to barrel it off and right there the hitter clearly couldn’t do anything with it two out space is empty that one hit to right and that lands in no man’s land the foul ball [Applause] goes down looking nationals go quietly they’re down one- nothing back here at Dodger Stadium we head to the bottom of the second here’s Kik Hernandez kik Hernandez hernandez versatile player can play all over the infield and the outfield [Applause] and that’s off the outside edge and it’s one and0 [Applause] [Applause] fall off foul on the ground out to short into the outfield base hit and a good start to the inning he kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock and you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole miguel Rojos at the plate that pitch gets the inside corner strike one [Music] backed off the plate that time come on let’s keep it going the one-1 is fouled off the one two oh in the dirt nobody out runner at first get out of here and it remains two and two drop it drop it keeps the atbat going with a foul ball that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was on the ground the third might be two the throw to second is offline now batting designated hitter Max Muny so the lineup flips over maxy at the dish he let off the bottom of the first with a single and then came in to score late on that fast ball big bat right here with an opportunity to do damage but on the flip side ground ball double play strike out that could get the inning back under control on the mound and it’s quickly nothing and two on the designated hitter [Music] and a swing and a miss he’s notched four strikeouts now man he stood no chance in that at bat a three pitch strikeout swung through all three tell you what boo it’s not a good feeling at all you know that from experience uh it’s happened a time or two if I didn’t roll over on the first pitch sinker to second base then you know in there long enough then I would Yeah I’ve had a couple my guy hacktastic and now it’s Mookie Betts and the first pitch misses for ball one [Music] that’s takes low two balls no strike runners at first and second with one gone in bottom half of inning number two and that’s a little high [Applause] swinging a foul straight back [Music] in for a strike now it’s three and two careful and that’ll load the bases you get a walk and you get a walk everyone gets a walk and up to the plate is Will Smith he reached out a walk his first time he’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed tough situation right here it’s so important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there [Applause] misses outside and the count is one and one [Applause] that one missed this is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended what you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands that’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants check swing he went too far and it’s a strike the Dodgers threatening spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another [Applause] lighter and this could be trouble one runs in the second run scores ler on third is B the throw is off the line and he’s in to score and it’s four nothing well there you go the RBI machine another clutch run scoring at back yeah he’s been so good in these situations call it clutch if you want but his resume speaks for itself one out runner at second and next for LA Tay Oscar Hernandez fast ball for a strike at 95 [Applause] now one and one and that’s a pitch early in this game he needs called for a strike struggling with command issues he’s got to get a little help from the umpire runner at second here one gone ripped to short abrams tosses to first and Hernandez is out now batting the center fielder andy Pahz andy Pahes steps to the plate for the Dodgers he’s got pop which is a little sneaky because he’s so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field but he can jump you if you make a mistake first pitch and that’s in for a strike well he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit [Applause] comes up empty that’s strike two more and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count and this situation will keep a close eye on his approach hacks and misses it’s a strike out but three runs come across in the inning all on this three-run double it’s now a four nothing ball game it’s Major League Baseball on the show and we’re back digging in it’s the speedy outfielder Jacob Young jacob Young and that’s in the dirt off the plate and the count is 2 and 0 backto-back breaking pitches away you get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you that he doesn’t want to challenge you so I think the confidence level is raised right here late on that fast ball as a hitter you got to learn something from that pitch he clearly wasn’t timed up on the fast ball in a 20 count you have to be ready to do damage drops one down in front of the plate and save he busted it down the line for that infield single this is a big part of his skill set and he puts himself into situations where he can rely on his speed to impact the ball game and this is just another example of it and we’ll see what else he can do now that he’s on first cj Abrams now there goes the runner save at second and that was not close runner in scoring position nobody out we’re here in the top half of inning number three [Music] and that misses one and one kershaw fires that’s a B not really attacking on the mound in this at bat all breaking balls so that makes me think they’re not really wanting to challenge him here man at second a little out front there as he swings through it [Applause] here’s the 2-2 this one lifted in the air left field he’s there he’s got it and there’s one down now batting second baseman Ahmed Rosario and now it’s Ahmed Rosario [Applause] and first offering is fouled off [Music] highf fly ball and that one curling foul down the right side one out and a runner at second [Music] that one down the line and it goes just foul the O2 and they’ll do it again that misses the zone ball one i don’t like to say he wasted a pitch i think that was a purpose pitch change the eye level have him look up now go back exactly where you want to go in the air to left down the line conforto on his way over makes the catch for the two away now batting left fielder James Wood now the left fielder James Wood worked a walk in his first trip to the plate this kid picked up in a trade a lot was offered and given to get him but he’s got a real high ceiling and there’s the strike brother at second two down foul ball there up the middle and that one handled jump throw and that’s a nice play to end the inning [Applause] so one left for Washington they’re on the short end of a four nothing score and welcome back to the ballpark here’s a switch hitter Tommy Edmond second base Tommy Edmond [Music] that’s outside ball one i think this is an important inning on the mound for him in this game he’s got to find a way to settle things down and give some length in this start swings and misses at the sweeper you know these Dodgers showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one the numbers kind of speak for themselves with the four walks they’ve done a great job of not trying to do too much and just staying disciplined come on swinging a ground ball rosario tosses the first and they get Edmond for the out impressed with this guy’s internal clock he knew he had plenty of time to take that extra step secure his grip on the baseball and make a strong accurate throw and here is Michael Conforto he’s 0 for one check swing called strike another thing I love is how they’ve allowed the game to come to them they’re not forcing the issue when they’re on offense and when you force and get anxious it starts being a lot more likely that you’ll let those pitchers off the hook let’s go ground ball up the middle that’s a base hit [Applause] nice just kept it simple played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down made at it first kik Hernandez steps to the plate for the Dodgers and that’s in for a strike man at first one away swings and misses at the pitch off the plate talk about tying a guy up that was ugly and takes low for ball one one and two and there’s the ball foul ball another 2-2 upcoming [Music] on the ground to short could be two it’s in and out of his glove but plenty of time to recover and that’s the second out now batting third baseman Miguel Rojas and up next for Los Angeles Miguel Rojas and when you talk about elite defensive third baseman this guy is at the top of the list in the air right side and it falls here’s the throw to the plate it’s offline the run comes in it’s 5 nothing here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move mckenzie Gore out of the game walks a big problem for him today as he leaves on the hook for the loss back after a quick break with a new pitcher now pitching now for the Nationals mitchell Park well he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year and that’s his first test this looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup here’s Max Muny that funky Muny singled and scored back in the first he’s one for two [Applause] that one fouled off stud when you look at players like this you play that hot corner got to be pretty courageous over there with the way balls come off the bat that’s the kind of guy that every year you expect him to be in the All-Star game and have a gold glove if not a platinum glove he swings and fouls one off rojos leads off first with two down to the inning [Applause] that’s down and in so what are the skills you look for that make a really good defensive third baseman that elite well Boo one of the things I think about immediately are just the feet does he have good feet is he able to quickly react and when you have good feet you’ve got soft hands and soft hand defenders are able to make tough plays look easy and as well lots of pop in that bat so you combine the slug with really good defense just off the inside edge fouled off and they’ll do it again [Applause] two outs just misses with that one 3-2 two out runner on first lot of movement in the infield hitters got to stay focused on the pitch mookie Bets up next for the Dodgers [Applause] so now two on and two outs not what he wanted to do right there Boo that keeps this inning alive puts a runner in the scoring position and a chance for this offense to add on to their lead here’s Mookie Betts at the plate now he’s one of the few players in baseball history to win the MVP and World Series in the same season yeah that 2018 Red Sox season was special and so was 2024 for Muki and the Dodgers just like that Boston team LA won the World Series with the MVP on their roster instead of Muki though it was Shi who claimed the double just missed [Applause] on the corner for a strike one and two traffic on the bases with one already in here in the last half of the third hit hard on the ground to the right side and that’s just fouled [Music] [Applause] turns and fires the bats the shorts stop takes the ball this guy’s a fun guy to watch taking at bat he just battles up there he doesn’t take a pitch off at all makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there you could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away yeah the slider misses down and away he should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked two aboard two outs [Applause] swinging a foul ball at the plate they’ll do it again [Applause] on the ground and that’s a fair ball one run across fires it to the plate but it’s offline and they’re pulling away up by seven now nice and bad right there not just the result but also seeing a lot of pitches made him really work out there on the mound turned on that inside pitch nicely and ripped it down the line to pick up two bases that can be a tough pitch to keep fair but his timing was great man at second here with two away will Smith steps to the plate for the Dodgers swing and a ball lined out towards center young pulls that one down and that is the third out of the inning three runs on three hits no errors and a runner left on to inning number four it’s the Dodgers seven and the Nationals nothing out of the fourth now it’s the National Cleanup hitter Andre Chaparo andres Chaparo clearly down in this ball game and you can’t look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing it’s got to come one at bat at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch make that guy on the mound work to get you out hauls it in for the out that was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate had pretty good timing on it just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up nathaniel Low here’s Nathaniel Low he’s sitting on 99 career homers we’ll see if this is the moment to notch number 100 and ball one one and one out base is empty [Music] fouled off left side the 1-1 and a foul ball [Music] on the ground to third onto first and a couple of quick outs [Applause] now batting third base next to hit for the Nets Brady House his first at bat was a strike out and that’s too high and that one is inside he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout and a pop off right side foul territory makes the catch in and over three up three down for Washington not going their way it’s 7 nothing back here in LA ready to go bottom four here’s Tasker Hernandez hernandez parker a tall lefty 25 years old and he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball born in New Mexico that’s too low one and0 back-to-back fast balls in that last one called for a strike probably go away but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off out of the ground to third tosses to first and one gone in the fourth as they get the lead off batting center fielder Andy Pahz andy Pahz steps to the plate for the Dodgers go for two in this one and first offering is fouled off and that one almost hit him one ball two straight ball [Applause] got him swinging for the strike out went back to the fast ball and it was effective third time he struck out in this one and definitely an individual performance you want to flush he just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there just one of those days but when you’re still winning the ball game at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W slice down the right side and that’s down and away swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field call makes the play and that is that no runs no hits no errors we played four it’s the Dodgers seven and the Nationals nothing back here at Dodger Stadium top five john Shami with Chris Singleton and leading it off Alex Call kershaw back to work and first offering is fouled off well these gnats looking to string together better at bats when they have runners on but it just hasn’t happened for him yet they’ve had their chances with runners in scoring position but nobody’s been able to deliver a big hit in those situations and you got to give some credit to the other side as well they’ve been able to get out of a few tough jams but frustration is mounting for this offense no doubt that misses now one and two on the ground right side sends it to first and the lead off hitter retired in the fifth good slider inside right there batter fighting to get there just rolled over it got the ground ball and now up for Washington riley Adams struck out looking in his first at bat off the mark there and that’s ball one the Nets with a lot of ground to make up and we’re in the top of the fifth on the ground to the left [Applause] on to Hernandez two up two down now batting the center fielder Jacob Young two down base is empty jacob Young digging in for the Nationals he’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors that one missed sliced hard but foul so a foul ball makes it one and two looking sharp just a strike away from five shut out innings pitch misses inside two and two swinging a miss struck him out and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one two three still nothing on the scoreboard for him after five it’s the Dodgers seven and the Nationals nothing michael Conford will climb in one for two and that one finds its way through and the leadoff man aboard [Applause] here’s Kik Hernandez keep it going ball one no strikes you know these Dodgers putting together some really good at bats in this game there’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate it looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early get him out of the game before he settles in so I’d say mission accomplished hit hard to the ground and up the middle base hit lead runner to second it’s a two on and nobody out two consecutive base hits for these guys here couldn’t get any air on him but he smoked that ball back up the middle timing was just perfect got great wood on it and there was just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it and at the plate for the Dodgers Miguel Rojas that’s in there that’s strike one just missed [Applause] next offering is foul back he was a little out front but did a good job keeping the hands back long enough to foul that pitch off and a ball in two strikes ground ball could be two house over to second it’s a double play they made that double play look so easy but it was far from routine that’s the one thing about big leagers they make tough plays look simple here’s my hit come on let’s go swinging a foul back and that’s out of play two outs this to third tosses across to first and that’ll do it so it’s no runs two hits no errors and a runner left we’re through five it’s the Dodgers seven and the Nationals nothing so the Nets lineup turns over here’s CJ Abrams to hit top of the zone for a called strike activity in the bullpen show Otanati the veteran right-hander appears to be loosening up number 86 also getting ready that one missing inside the 1-1 is fouled off swing and a line drive that’s a base hit into left field and they have their first hit since the third inning now batting second base dominant performance for him today boo just two hits allowed so far no runs across either and he’s had an answer for just about every hitter he’s faced so I don’t think this hit is going to knock him off his stride too much so a man aboard and stepping in is the speedy Ahmed Rousario he’s 0 for one and the slider just misses that’s right gets the call and the count one and one abrams gets his lead at first with nobody out slider misses outside [Music] and a liner out into right center for a base hit and now runners at the corners nobody out now batting left fielder James Wood now James Wood and that’s off the inside edge and that is ball one all right nope boom [Music] just missed here’s a three-0 and there’s the automatic clearly taking all the way there in that three-0 count it was a cookie right down the middle there’s a swing and a drive that skips over the fence so it’s an automatic double and a run comes in to score well this tends to happen more often in this park than others and that short fence is just so inviting for hitters you see a lot of balls bounce over for an automatic double when no one can run it down and the Dodgers will go to the bullpen kershaw will depart and he exits with a nice lead threw the ball well and we’ll have a new pitcher when we come back now pitching number 70 on pitch here this softball has been really good against left-handed hitters [Applause] and next is the designated hitter Andres Chaparo [Applause] that one misses and it’s one and0 [Music] [Applause] and another ball called strike right there next pitch is downstairs two in scoring position nobody out and we’re the top half of the sixth ripped on a line stretches out and holds it in runners tagging from second and third it’s a sack fly as he comes across to score it’s seven to two he was all over that fast ball right there i tell you what if he gets under it just by a fraction of an inch or a little bit more Nathaniel Low and now the first baseman Nathaniel Low [Music] fly ball to right makes the catch rather tagging from third he’ll score the sack fly it’s seven to three oh that’s the third run of the inning this team is doing a nice job of executing at the plate right now brady House digging in for the Nationals right through there for a strike there it was oh here it is hit it he gets a take gets ahead in the count [Music] and that’s in the dirt and now it’s even one and one and a big swing and a miss one ball two strike and down on strikes he goes and that’s the third out three runs three hits no errors no one left 23 four two up in the home half of the six it’s the Dodgers seven and the Nationals three now pitching number 61 gets handed the rock out of the pen he last pitched two days ago here’s Mooki now chris baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out yeah that’s fouled off yeah his swing is so good it’s in the zone a long time he gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits just missed singi one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore so when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this do you think of that as plus value absolutely if he’s doing damage now if he’s rolling over and and grounding out then it’s a different story but yeah if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence 100% will Smith with this kind of lead he can swing freely try to hit the ball out of the park do what he loves to do yeah and the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end one of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter base is empty one away here in the bottom of the six yeah and I figured you would get caught into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night that is true the one two got him coming out of the bullpen and throwing beans so he gets the call and picks up the strike out looking sometimes with a good hitter at the plate he’ll be the one to get the benefit of the doubt if he lays off on a close pitch like that but just not right there strike zone definitely expanded a little bit with two strikes two outs base is empty tosscar the best one we have seen throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate and a base hit man aboard on the leadoff single now batting catcher Riley Adams up now for Washington riley Adams fast ball on the inside corner for a strike well the leadoff man gets on you want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two 01 now right through there for a strike 02 count both pitches on the inside part of the plate hitter is thinking I don’t want to get beat here this is a good time for something off speed away swing and a miss struck him out he’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field he was out in front there just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track good pitch for the strike out next to hit for the Nats Jacob Young swing and a ground ball out to short nice stop to first to first and he beats it everyone’s safe the effort from both players involved in this play just really stands out to me i mean you got the diving stop at short which was outstanding and how can you not love the hustle flying down the line that’s just great baseball at an extremely high level cj Abrams digging in for the Nationals one for three and that is out of play two on one out that one a little bit high and it’s one and one one ball one strike that misses off the outside edge it’s a big opportunity right here but I love the way he’s slowing the game down he’s shrinking his zone making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit just missed first pitch strike from the pitcher but then no panic at all by the hitter very patient showing good discipline now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count fouls one away and now three and two swing at a ball lifted to center field betts pulls it down and there’s two gone that’s a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch we all know those can be a little tricky especially if the wind swirl around out there now here is Ahmed Rousario [Music] and a fast ball misses outside for a ball and that’s ball one [Music] that clips the corner one and that one wrapped foul [Music] in the dirt It kept close now a blooper back behind Shore brings it in for the third out so the Nets leave a pair they’re down four it’s seven to three [Applause] and at the plate for the Dodgers Andy Kah three strikeouts already he’s 0 for three that misses the zone ball one one and0 oh two and0 [Applause] just missed the ball and [Applause] fast ball for a strike well it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone what does that mean top hand better be working for the hitters adjust that side a little bit give yourself a chance to hit that one ripped high bounce takes it over the fence for an automatic double the automatic double kind of feels like enjoying cruise control in your car boo you don’t need to keep the pedal down as you cruise into second base just no worries in the world you know what he put a really good swing on that one runner in scoring position no outs tommy Edmond at the plate whoa squirts away a little bit nice job behind the plate there and the slider just misses that misses and that’s ball three runner at second nobody out and ball four two aboard second walk of the game for him and he’s been really patient at the play the game plan that he’s sticking to he’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there first and second no outs and next for LA Michael Conforto and the first pitch misses for ball one well he’s already in some trouble and falling behind in the count makes it even worse then you’ve got to throw the ball over more of the plate and that’s where they can really do damage against a guy like this that one finds the zone and it’s one and one well we call that keyholeing even though it’s right there and looks pretty good if he doesn’t love it he’s not going to swing that early in the count first and second no outs here the bottom of the seventh in the air to left center squeezes it and there’s one away now batting the first baseman Kik Hernandez kik Hernandez at the plate line drive base hit right field here comes Pahz around third he’ll score and it’s 83 that’s back to back singles for him anytime you rip a line drive the other way you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it that’s great work right there two on one out miguel Rojos steps to the plate for the Dodgers gets the slider in there for a strike [Applause] close one doesn’t get the call and a count even one and one edmund the lead runner at second hernandez over at first with one away swing and a miss and that’s strike two with one ball two strike [Applause] and a foul ball he stays alive look out that ball smoked man I am so relieved that they have this netting down the line just ensure safety for the fans last thing is a play low to second abs onto first double play and that’s the inning but they pick up one run on the RBI single it’s now 83 you’re watching Major League Baseball on the show now number 86 will take over here left-handed batter at the plate and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year so this seems like a calculated move here’s the left fielder James Wood left fielder James Wood that’s outside and that’s ball one one ball no strike and that’s a little bit high two balls no strikes swing and a pop off in foul ground he makes the grab and klein warming up as well breaking ball inside and that is ball one just missed swing and a foul out of play right side hernandez settles underneath it out number two [Applause] two down base is empty and now up for Washington nathaniel Low and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike two down nobody on and we’re in the top of the eighth and that misses one and one la hard hit to third rojos with the throw to first and that is that and the Nationals gone in order can’t chip away at an 83 deficit now pitching for Trevor Williams into the game i think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard just doesn’t have the same intensity to it but he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for the stats obviously regardless of the score here comes Max Muny let’s see there’s the strike at the knees and it’s 0 and one williams he’s someone that fills up the strike zone so he doesn’t give up a lot of walks but because he’s in the zone so much a decent amount of hits occur that one misses and the count is one and one and he’s got to get ahead early in the count and then be able to mix up his speeds add and subtract some velocity but command is the big key throwing the ball where he wants to next one is off the plate and now three and one [Applause] hammered down the right side but foul [Music] that one hammered center field that’s back and out of here home run number 10 on the year and they tack one on the board it’s 93 already playing with the lead and now they’re celebrating a home run they’re having a great time out there [Applause] took on the big part of the yard for that home run and just barely got it over the wall i thought for a second he brought it back out there too gave it a great effort but you know those plays are so tough to pull off and I’m sure he’d love to have another shot at it here’s Muki to hit [Applause] and that misses off the outside edge [Applause] and the one that one is upstairs the real threats are coming up already giving up a home run in this inning he’s going to really have to bear down [Applause] next pitch is inside and it’s three and0 nobody on nobody out with a run in here the bottom half of the eighth inning in for a strike and it’s three and one [Applause] foul ball [Applause] stays alive [Music] foul we’ll see another payoff pitch good first low pulls it down two away now good hard fast ball up in the zone right there they look really good coming in but so hard to get on top of as a hitter and now the center fielder Andy Pahes one for four with a double and first offering is fouled off two outs and one in scoring position [Applause] ground ball right side low he steps on the bag they limit the damage here but the solo shot stretches their lead even further last chance coming up here for the Nationals brady House digging in for the Nationals 0 for three in this one [Applause] first offering and it just misses i can’t play around with him here it’s a six-run lead at this point got to attack hitters even if you give up a solo shot lifted in the air down the left side fair ball well I’m not saying that play was easy but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump those small moments can be costly so a man at first Alex Call digging in for the Nationals [Applause] and a swinging to miss oh and one [Applause] and that one is lifted in the air hernandez one down catcher Riley Adams and here’s the catcher riley Adams 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out and that one is downstairs ball one [Applause] swang and a miss the Dodgers up big in this one here in the top of the ninth and misses inside [Applause] and there’s a ball [Music] and ball four to a board now batting the center fielder Jacob Young now at the plate Jacob Young you talk about elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list fast for a strike and you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively one of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him rips that one center field pah makes the grab for the second out now that is shortstop CJ Abs so it’s their last chance in this one up now for Washington cj Abrams swing and a pop up [Applause] he’ll squeeze it for the final out and the Dodgers take this one in a blowout good win by six runs always nice when you can win by a touchdown or a couple of field goals you want to keep that momentum going knowing the offense can
