The Day After: Edmonton Oilers 1, Florida Panthers 5 Discussion | FLA Wins 4-2

i’ve uh I’ve got a Franklin you have not met Franklin yet say hi to Franklin hi buddy what are you doing such a sweet boy he’s such a sweet boy also we have a kitty kitty oh my arm’s in the way arms in the way there’s a kitty kitty right there hey kitty kitty there is not a single thing that I could say today that will make any fan in oil country feel better um so I’m not going to try and do that whatever you’re feeling today after the loss last night it’s completely valid i’m not here to try and you know be this like toxic positive like oh there’s always next year not not how I’m rolling today um I didn’t really have like a plan for this video specifically i figured I would just kind of chat hockey just in general um there’s going to be lots of time to dissect what went wrong um what went right there’s lots of time to dissect the draft coming up free agency class uh you know what moves the Oilers should be making to improve their team but the emotions are still so raw that it’s not really worth getting into the day after they lose their second consecutive Stanley Cup to the Florida Panthers uh this is a not so fun fact but the last team to lose back-to-back Cup finals to the same team were the 1977 and 1978 Boston Bruins that lost to the Montreal Canadians in both of those years i’m sure my dad loves uh reliving those memories big Bruins fan also big Oilers fan too but he grew up a Bruins fan before the Oilers were in the NHL um so yeah we’re just going to have a very formal discussion we’re going to chat uh just in general about the team this year um Oh okay franklin was jumping down i thought he was going to like rip my headset off though what a cute guy so yeah we’re like I said we’re just going to chat hockey very formal discussion my my webcam is like really messed up right now like do you guys notice the coloring seems off and it’s like I don’t know i think something with my webcam is off anyways how did you all sleep did you get any sleep i hope you’re doing well dude there are there’s so much cat hair just floating all over the place um first things first though before we get into the hockey discussion if you enjoyed today’s video just make sure to hit that like button uh it goes a long way in supporting the channel the amount of support that we saw in the playoffs this year is something that I am forever grateful um my goal was to hit 5,000 subscribers before the um before the end of the playoffs whenever that was going to be right like my goal during the playoffs was let’s see if we can hit 5,000 subscribers well we did that and actually just way more uh we are now sitting at and I’m going to pull it up for everyone we’re now sitting at 7,084 subscribers uh just absolutely incredible phenomenal growth last night we went from 6800 to 7 so like almost 200 subs just from the live stream last night and then we’re climbing again today before you know it folks we’re gonna be at 10,000 subscribers and um I’ve only it’s wild to think about i’ve only been doing this for a year and a half uh I mostly primarily focus on the MTON Oilers even though I love hockey in general i’m I always say I’m a hockey fan first but I just do want to give a huge shout out to everyone that does tune in i know it’s not just Oilers fans that tune in there are fans from around the world that cheer for a variety of hockey teams um I’m glad that you are happy with the space that I have helped cultivate here we have the best community here on YouTube and uh I couldn’t be more thankful for everyone that tunes in and shows their support would I have liked a better result last night absolutely um last night I put out a tweet saying that this loss hurt more than last year uh and there’s a couple reasons for that last year the Oilers were down 03 in their series and you know I think when you’re down 03 in a series like mentally you tell yourself uh well the series is over right if the Oilers uh if they can just get one maybe two wins to make a series out of it you don’t want to get swept in the finals uh you know then you can go out and be like yeah that’s fair right that’s fair and to lose by one goal obviously it’s heartbreaking i’m not trying to say last year wasn’t heartbreaking because it it was but in terms of like my own personal feelings about the loss last year uh it was my first year making content on YouTube and you know I I just approached last year’s cup final and the loss a little bit differently this year to get back in consecutive years it’s one thing to make the cup finals but then if you do it two years in a row there’s a there’s there’s a different level of like hope there’s a different level of confidence there’s a different level of belief that your team can get it done and for the Edmonton Oilers this year I thought this was the year they um came back being down 02 against the Kings they dismantled the Gold Knights in five they dismantled the Dallas Stars in five and they led for basically every single game in that Vegas series and Dallas Stars series like it was very rare for Edmonton to get behind in those games but then they played Florida in the cup final they they won game one they got a lucky power play in overtime puck over glass and you know when you win game one at home you have home ice advantage this time last year they didn’t have home ice advantage this year they did you win game one at home it’s like oh okay yeah no the belief’s there we can get the job done and then game two goes to double overtime and uh the goal that beat Steuart Skinner kind of a fluky one brad Marshian didn’t even actually like get a shot on net just kind of squeaked through Skinner’s pads a non-shot squeaker that went in okay 1-1 series sure game three I think is where the concern started to set in for a lot of fans in oil country game three where they lost 6-1 they couldn’t stay out of the penalty box they couldn’t get a save steuart Skinner was pulled they were just gooning it up the Oilers that is the Oilers were just gooning it up that whole game uh there was a level of frustration that we haven’t really seen from this team a team that called themselves mature a team that carried themselves a certain way throughout the entire season and playoffs they went off the rails and I didn’t outright express my feelings after game three but mentally I had an idea that uhoh like I think the Oilers are like becoming unraveled here like they are legitimately losing their minds instead of just focusing on winning a hockey game and winning a championship and then game four happens and they’re down three nothing after the first period and Steuart Skinner’s pulled again second straight game Stuart Skinner gets pulled but somehow the team finds a way a miraculous comeback they end up winning the game in overtime off of again a lucky break uh this time instead of a penalty that Florida took it was a puck that went off of a Florida defender through the legs of Babski the Oilers tie the series up they tie the series up in a game that they probably should have lost but they found a way to come back because that’s what this team has done all season long just when you think they’re down and out they find a way to come back okay so you split on the road you take home ice advantage back that’s great hey we got home ice advantage back we’re going back to Edmonton game five cup final chance to go up 3-2 in the series and then have a chance to maybe win the cup in Florida in game six what do the Oilers do in game five they come out and play one of the most lackluster we’ve it was the most lackluster effort I’ve seen from this group in a long time they finished the game with I think 20 shots on net they had 11 shots on goal total heading to the third period 11 they had no energy and that’s with a crowd of 19,000 fans yelling all game 110 dB and louder uh 115 dB when they came out onto the ice the fans chanting let’s go Oilers all game chanting Sergey all game trying to will their team and give them energy how the Oilers came out so flat in game five i don’t think I’ll ever understand i think that’s going to be one of those games that I think about for a long time as a fan is how did they come out so flat in game five game five was the game that that should have you know really cemented okay this is our year and and just like the rest of the series they get down early and they’re trailing and I’m pretty sure there’s a stat a statistic out there i haven’t confirmed if it exists or not but I guarantee Florida led like they were probably time spent leading was probably the highest it’s ever been in Stanley Cup final history i guarantee it i’ve never seen a team as dominant as the Florida Panthers i’ve never seen a team completely steamroll another team in the cup final the way we saw Florida steamroll Edmonton they made a good Oilers team look terrible and make no mistake the Edmonton Oilers are a good team in fact I would argue they’re a great team a flawed great team the Florida Panthers what are their flaws they don’t have any i can’t think of a single flaw that this year’s Florida Panthers have that this year’s championship team has this Florida Panthers team man like I don’t know dude the fact that Toronto took them to seven is actually crazy and they actually could have gone up three games to none if they had just held a lead in game uh three in in Florida um now I there’s other things that we talk about as well i guess I can talk about game six since I talked about games one through five game six the Oilers came out flying they had a couple really good opportunities babsky with a couple big saves florida gets that first goal on a shot that you want a save yes Reinhardt makes a great move to get by Ekholm to get the shot off but this the big story throughout the series was one goalie was making saves the other goalie wasn’t is it all on stew absolutely not there’s going to be a lot of people that say “Oh the Oilers lost only because of the goalending,” which is obviously far from the truth there were a lot of passengers in this cup final um but if we take a look at what certain players did in the cup final I’m just going to sort by Edmonton Oilers here let’s take a look at this give me a second let me just adjust this here we go so Leandry Cidle he led the Oilers in points but look at that plus minus now this does include empty net goals uh there’s a couple empty neters for the Panthers last night that kind of skews the plus minus but Dry Cidle and McDavid were on the ice for the first two goals for the Panthers in the first period they were massively instrumental in the team’s downfall if if we want to call it that their two best players were not their their best um McDavid had one goal in six games right evan Bousard had six points in six games which is great uh he had a tough night last night he was a minus four last night of course again two of them empty netters uh Matias Ekhome did not have a good series cory Perry ended up with four points he had three goals in six games now again minus six most of the minuses came in last night’s game uh but there were a lot of players that were complete no-shows here trent Frederick zero points in six games yanmark zero points koulak zero points clingberg zero points jeff Skinner he got to play three games he didn’t get to play a whole lot i thought Jeff Skinner was the Oilers’s best player last night and that’s just not good enough connor Brown one point Henrik one point kane a healthy Evander Kane right everyone says “Oh a healthy Evander Kane is going to be a difference maker for the Oilers.” That wasn’t the case he ended up finishing with one goal zero assists one point in the entire series victor Arvson ended up with two points in this series a goal and an assist i actually don’t even remember Arvetson’s goal i don’t even remember him scoring i don’t even know when that was good for Victor Arvdson nan Hopkins only had two points we know he’s dealing with something uh Kappa ended up finishing with three assists uh two of those assists came in I want to say game one against Florida he had a great game in game one uh Darnell Nurse he had three points he was a minus one i thought Nurse played awful i thought he was terrible jake Walman had moments of good a lot of moments of bad but look at Pod Coulson pod Coulson had more goals than Conor McDavid in the Stanley Cup final yes one of those goals was in garbage time last night the Oilers down 5 nothing at least Bud Cole’s in room the shut out uh but Cory Perry man what can you say about him the fact that Cory Perry had three goals in the finals right uh he had three goals second to Leon Dryidle when a 40-year-old player is outscoring and outproducing 90% of the roster that’s a problem that is a big big problem now emotions are too high for me to continue to point specific players out i’m just going over the raw raw stats we will have lots of time to go over the you know the advanced stats the the the parts of the roster that needed to be upgraded at the trade deadline but the time to do that is not today uh it might not even be tomorrow could be not even the time until a week from now i am likely going to take a little bit of time off not like a ton of time off um of course just keep looking out for content here and there i’m going to be doing gaming stuff on my gaming channel Austin Hockey XP i’ll leave a link to that in the description and um this summer there’s lots of content planned i already have a lot of things in the pipeline that I’m excited to continue to work on and pump out for all of you it’s going to be a long off season but at least it’s not as long as you know missing the playoffs would be because then April May June July August the off seasonason’s right now because we’re in a cup window they’re shorter we get July and August and then we’re back at it in September for preseason which obviously I’m looking forward to but uh yeah it sucks man it sucks there there’s a And oh man I didn’t even talk about the special teams special teams were awful what did the Oilers finish with in in this uh playoffs for penalty kill 66%ish on the kill throughout an entire postseason maybe Mark Stewart’s someone that they uh consider moving the power play looked anemic maybe they consider moving on from Gulletson stan Bowman has a lot of decisions to make right this coaching staff is not Bowman’s coaching staff don’t be surprised to see changes to the coaching staff rightly or wrongly right i’m not saying Chris Knobblock deserves to get fired i’m not saying that these guys deserve to get moved but usually general managers like to bring in their own guys so don’t be surprised if you see Stam Bowman do a couple interesting things with the coaching staff don’t be surprised if you see this core I wouldn’t say get blown up but don’t be surprised for Stan Bowman to try and move some big names evander Kane is likely someone that he tries to move darnell Nurse maybe yeah I know he has a full no move uh but we’ll have to see what is up Stan Bowman’s sleeve like I said this video didn’t really have like a specific pattern there was nothing specific to talk about i just wanted to talk about the team in general and uh thank everyone for their support these videos at the end of the season um this is the second time I’ve had to do a video like this where the season comes to an end and the others fall short it’s not optimal um but if if there’s anything I can leave on on a positive note it’s that this morning at least for me the sun rose i was woken up by my cat’s meowing for food franklin squishing my chest because he weighs 20 pounds we are trying to get him on a uh well we are working on him with a diet poor Franklin he’s he’s so he’s so big and we got to we got to get that guy to lose weight but he was crushing my chest so you know being able to get woken up by cats hearing the sounds of birds outside seeing the sun rise again um knowing that as much as it sucks last night losing knowing that you know things move on and that we’re going to be okay is is is a positive for me doesn’t feel like it for a lot of you and I don’t blame you for feeling down and out today if you’re mad if you’re sad whatever the case is um yeah let me know all of your thoughts in the comments section below i appreciate your support as always it means the world tell some that you love them today i’ll be back very very soon i promise lots of content on the way uh fight like a kid fight like Ben let’s go Oilers and uh we’ll see you soon Oil Country take care

After last season’s rally from a 3-0 deficit in the Stanley Cup Final ended in Game 7 heartbreak for the Edmonton Oilers, their 2025 rematch against the defending champions ultimately ended in similar fashion on Tuesday night with a 5-1 defeat in Game 6, falling 4-2 in the series. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were held off the scoresheet, Stuart Skinner struggled in goal, and the depth couldn’t show up on time to help Edmonton force a game 7.

Austin Hockey discusses the series as a whole and talks about the future of the channel and upcoming content in today’s Day After Discussion. #oilers #edmontonoilers #nhl

  1. this was the oilers last chance at the cup. there will b no cap space left for a team or a new goalie. its all down hill from here. blame it on management bowman/jackson/nicholson and whoever didn't sign zito? what a mess of a team going forward this is gonna be. and with bowman/jackson/nicholson in charge, nobody can help the oilers now. may as well wait for another mcdavid, oh but those clowns probably traded all our #1 picks too?

  2. Hi Franklin and Kitty Kitty!

Austin, I have so much respect for the way you talk hockey. Really unbiased and valid points no matter what team you were discussing. We definitely got to see some great hockey (and maybe a few not so great games)

Will be interesting to see what happens at the trade deadline!

  3. I think we need a break from talking about the oiler boys….id be happier just hearing about your cats at this point. Thanks for making this playoff run so enjoyable Austin!

  4. You have to understand that Florida did what ever other team did, build and they didn’t go the way of Arizona Coyotes. Teams just have to keep building, be patient, train, practice and your team whoth time will evolve and elevatetheir game so that they can get the Stanley Cup.

  5. What next? Jeff (liver-lips) Jackson must admit he botched hiring knob. Fire him, get an N.H.L. coach and get an N.H.L goalie. Keep Pickard as a backup because the team plays well in front of him. ANY QUESTIONS?

  6. We should have taken the cup last year. It was a different outing this year.we were outclassed, outplayed and they had a better goalie in Bobrovski. Congratulations Panthers and Panthers fans

  7. I forgot to mention how awesome you are Austin. I always look forward to your input on everything about the Oilers and their counterparts. Looking forward to what the future holds for us. Thank you Austin.👍

  8. Honestly, the Oilers got further than I expected. At the start of the playoffs, I thought they’d be knocked out by L.A. All those injuries, no time to gel, didn’t know who’d be in the lineup, etc.
This offseason, I would expect management to try and find a winger for Draisaitl’s line, a solid right D man and, maybe, an established goalie (almost impossible). McDavid and Draisaitl were too one-dimensional against Florida and they MUST be split up. They need to have a solid, established, top 6. Right now, you have maybe a top 4 (if you count Nuge and Hyman). Knoblauch had to constantly change the lineup and that doesn’t bode well for building chemistry nor consistency.
I could type a novel about the Oilers but I think I’ll end it here.
Thanks for the awesome channel, Austin. I really enjoyed being part of the community.

  9. LOVE YOU AUSTIN! See you next season!!!! This sucks but whatever. HOPEFULLY WE WILL BE CALLED THE START AND FINISH TEAM NEXT PLAYOFFS AND NOT THE COMEBACK KINGS

  10. Hyman loss was big. It forced us to change the lines at every level and we couldn’t figure out lines that worked all series. His hitting was essential to our potential success against the panthers.. might not have mattered. We had no answer for anything they did. We were lucky to get 2 wins.. I could rant all day. Thanks for a great season Austin. Looking forward to your content in the future. Cheers.

  11. I think, coaching, depth and the absence of Hyman was troubling for the Oilers in this series. With a team as deep as Florida even though many were also playing through injuries, it is difficult to compete. I also think Oilers coaching didnt have the answers to create space for their top players. I also believe not starting Skinner in game 5 was a distraction that hurt the team more than helped it. I think it added to some division among the team, whether intentional or not when you dont start a goalie you are somewhat putting blame at his feet. With the money Oilers have they need to create more depth to have competitive 3rd lines like Florida. Every line for Florida was dangerous. The scoring from 1st line to 3rd there was not much difference. That is just too much for any team to handle IMO. Great commentary Austin. The only thing if at all too criticize as all of us are imperfect with our positions. Would be I think the Oiler fan’s should have stayed away from the entire team of destiny bit and narrative before the finals. That puts too much on them and raises expectations too high for fans. A team of destiny is a lot to live up to.

  12. Honestly? I don’t see a guy like McDavid walks of his own accord. I know he knows the window for the Oilers is still open with him there. If management is smart, they’ll find a way to keep McDavid and exchange a weak top 6 link (Kane) for a bonafide starter. There has to be a decent market for Kane, and Kane himself should like to play to a higher standard given this is a contract year. Idk what you’d do. That’s why I’m not a GM/AM. But I’m sick of seeing the management fumble year after year of McDavid’s tenure on the Oilers.

  13. keep in mind Toronto took them to 7 but Florida did not have their full roster. And Oilers were missing Hyman, RNH had a broken hand. Cant compare the two

  14. I came to your channel and the playoffs well into the season. Love the commentary from you and the fans; quite enjoyable and I hope you are back for 25-26 season. What ever way, I wish you a great summer , Alex, and all the best generally. You've got considerable talent. William
