talk to another guy and unfortunately I know you’re going to get to that but what a job by this group and they got a chance for a sweep here today and they got an A lineup in there Naylor back and the top looks very familiar so they’re definitely trying to get all three here on the south side Vargas unfortunately a broken foot for him after getting hit by a pitch he is going to be out for probably somewhere between four to six weeks blaze Alexander the corresponding move and again the depth of this Diamondback organization right now being tested Fortunately they’re extraordinarily not just topheavy offensively but so well-rounded that even with the loss of Vargas they should still be able to put up some runs specifically here this afternoon against the White Sox you would think so and their left-handed lineup’s been going so well all season and that’s what it is again is a left-handed heavy and that really works out against a right-hander who features more breaking balls than he does the change up so everything’s going to be coming towards him they’ve been able to hang out and hit a lot of those breaking balls and a lot of off speed pitches very hard in this series already one of the biggest things fans want to know is when are they going to see the real Zack Allen back obviously coming into this one an erra at 5.60 long ways away from the player that so many fans fell in love with over the last three seasons believe me he is trying to figure it out as well but as you sort of dive into your pregame notes what are the biggest things that stand out that might be holding Gallon back so far in the first half of this season a glaring thing is his ability to throw strikes with the fast ball he typically gets ahead and is around 60 plus% first pitch strikes that’s closer to 50 the fastball command has just plagued him all year and he’ll show signs and all of a sudden for an inning it’ll go away that’s kind of what happened he was pitching pretty well against Colorado last time out and in that fourth inning just unraveled and he found himself on the losing side and and fortunately his team scored enough runs now the one thing we have noticed in the first two games of this series the White Sox they are a team that struggles getting the fast ball with some sort of slug you’re looking for Gallon ideally here to maybe just work ahead be h fast heavy and hopefully if he throws some strikes early I gain some confidence as he moves deeper into his outing that would be great if he did that if he looks I mean Nelson’s got a great fast ball maybe a couple miles an hour better than Zack most days he threw that 80% of the time this team just consistently fouls off fast balls struggles to square it up they have to cheat to get to it and if you have to cheat against Zack Allen’s fast ball it just sets up that breaking ball so well and so hopefully that’s something that he and Macan working together for the first time can really highlight is when guys are guessing or cheating and then they can go to the other pitch I know you hinted at it just a moment ago but Naylor back in the lineup at first base he was doing his uh pregame workout with the trainers to see how that right shoulder was holding up seems to be in a good spot and we all know having seen him all season long when he’s in there he provides I don’t want to say patience but usually good swing decisions he can draw the walks he is starting to hit for a little bit more power and that average over 300 you put him right in the middle of this lineup with guys like Catel Haven and Guriel in front and behind him respectively and that’s what makes this offense so dynamic when you look at one through five and you can’t keep him out of the lineup he’s got full range of motion the trainer’s checked off and he’s back in there and you’re right he can kind of pick up the RBI when he needs to or he can start an inning and get on base his ability to get on base either the walk or finding a way to hit the ball and you’re right starting to find the gaps a little more and he’s just one away from getting into double digits home run-wise all things considered a win here today the Dbacks go seven and three on this road trip that does what for this group when they head back home so much momentum and you get an off day you get to reset and then you’re taking on another lesser team in the Marlins so a chance to start the home stand positive as well and I think everyone in that organization knew this stretch of nine games against three of the most inferior opponents you have to go 8- one 7-2 and they’re well on their way to pulling that off that would be six and three with a win here today although they did win their home finale before the road trip so you want to count for the Chicago White Socks they are 25 and 55 on the season beating off designated hitter Mike Tauman batting second shortstop Chase Madrid batting third in left field Andrew Benitendi and batting fourth at first base Miguel Vargas batting fifth and catching Kyle Teal batting sixth in center field Luis Robert Jr batting seventh at second base Lenin Sosa batting eighth third baseman Josh Rojas and rounding out the starting nine in right field Michael A taylor again the lineup for the White Socks features Tauman Madrid Benitendi Vargas Teal Robert Sosa Rojos and Taylor and on the mound for the White Socks it is right-hander Coley Shawn Burke has a erra that would suggest it’s major league average at four and a half but it’s definitely on the high side his first year really getting length as a starter and he gets about a hit an inning way less strikeouts a decent amount of walk so another patient approach will work here he loves pitching off of the fast ball that’s how he gets most of his outs and most of his strikeouts it’s that high rising fast ball unfortunately he’s going against one of the best fast ball hitting teams in these Dbacks are umpires in this one derek Thomas is calling balls and strikes alex Tossce is the umpire at first ron Copa is at second and Cory Blazer is the umpire over at third once again the Diamondbacks will be in their black uniform sets gray pants black socks to go with black caps and bills the White Socks in their home whites white jerseys white pants with black pinstripes they also wear black caps and bills and on a warm Chicago summer day we are about ready to wrap up what has been one of the longest road trips of the season the right-hander Burke into his windup and his first pitch to Perdomo is swung on and missed away we two balls in a strike you’re not kidding about how hot Marte is it’s impressive writing down his average and his numbers each game and just continue to climb up to 320 now with 32 home runs or pardon me 32 RBI’s 15 home runs on the season as a long hold from Burke and now he fires hits it off the end of the bat it flutters towards the White Sock dugout third base side and the count even at two balls and two strikes white Soxs attacking him with the slowest off speed pitch that the pitcher has he’s hit a home run and a fast ball out are really trying to slow his bat down throwing him low velocity pitches two balls two strikes for Domo at first nobody out and Burke throws to first again it’s the second and final disengagement we’ll see how aggressive Purdomo chooses to be teal has only had five guys try and steal off him he’s only thrown out two pretty good percentage for such a small sample size two- two pitch gel takes loan inside and that’s going to fill up the count three balls two strikes just underway here at Rate Field top of the first inning and now the 3-2 runner goes the pitch swung on and missed the throw to second not going to be in time it is the 12th stolen base of the season for Purdomo and unfortunately a strike out for Catel one out for Paven Smith another slow breaking ball rated 80 m an hour got Catel way out in front and it took Teal a little bit of a second to get a grip on the ball made a strong throw but Purdomo was well ahead of it that’s now two strikeouts and two batters for Burke unfortunately only one out and a runner at second which is great for the Dbacks as here comes Pav Smith first pitch Paven takes downstairs for ball one as you mentioned this is the first season for the 25-year-old where he’s really getting a lot of starts every fifth day only made four appearances last year three of them were in the rotation he threw the ball very well down the stretch and a limited sample size now the one and there’s a strike called one ball one strike the count just got word from the official score they’re going to tag Teal with a pass ball instead of a wild pitch as this one one is just off the plate away now two balls one strike count which if that is now the case it means that’s second pass ball assessed to Teal on the season two on fabin swings little bouncer foul that goes rolling the Dback dugout two balls two strikes you’ve mentioned several times teams don’t like throwing pave fast balls that’s the pitch he gets all over four breaking balls so far to him here two balls two strikes and this pitch is just off the plate away close but no cigar for Burke it’s now a three ball two strike count runner second one out and now the 3-2 swung on and fouled back that’s the one he was in the vicinity of the booth didn’t quite have the distance to actually get inside the radio booth that’s the speed we’re looking for to go ahead make that fair catch it’s a shame it didn’t give us an opportunity that one’s significantly better than the one that our host radio booth next to us almost had yesterday that came in like a rocket just above him darren Jackson he might have made a play on it len Casper I’m not so sure here’s the payoff haven swinging a miss took a huge cut on a 3-2 pitch and that’s now three strikeouts this inning here for Shawn Burke but only two men down and coming to the plate Josh Naylor chance for a big RBI i mean they made that error yesterday really count that was the difference that allowed him to score three runs in that inning really curious to see how that shoulder looks lineup for Josh Naylor his 10th home run of the season and the Dbacks are out in front two to nothing teams think they can get a strike on him naylor’s ready to swing as soon as he gets to the ballpark let alone in the box first pitch breaking ball and gets just enough of it and he continues to just thrive in this ballpark he’s the current major league leader in almost every category here so far on the right foot 576 ERA it’s the second highest erra or pardon me 560 RA the second highest qualified erra amongst starters as now this one two is too high two balls and two strikes and one of the biggest sources of problems there’s actually two walks he’s allowed 41 of them coming into play today the most in the National League and then 17 home runs allowed already this year as this one swung on weekly grounded up the third baseline it teardrops foul and it’s now a two ball two strike out anytime it seems like Zach’s turning the corner either as an outing or an inning that goes back see if that affects the confidence of Gallon to throw that fast ball first pitch and Vargas takes just a tad outside for ball one one ball no strike so that’s now the 18th home run surrendered by Gallon in 92 in a third inning pitched 10 too high two balls two strikes and it’ll be interesting to see as we talk more about James McCann the way he works with Gallon in this one the reality is that for the last few years as a 200 swung on and missed Gallon has worked pretty exclusively with very young catchers brano’s first full season was in 2023 he was the primary back stop i know that Diamondbacks had Tucker Barnhart briefly last year as this 2-1 swung on found by the right-handed hitting Vargas counted two balls and two strikes but a lot of his starts are also with Jos Herrera especially to start the beginning of this year mccann has experience and probably not afraid to speak his mind as well to a pitcher as this 2-2 is in the dirt tried the breaking ball but missed and the cow runs full and he might have some familiarity with a few guys in this lineup there’s a ton of young ones but he can lean on that too with some of the guys here that have been around the block three balls two strikes the payoff and the curve ball missed low ball for it tried to get him to chase he would not and that’s a two out walk so right away it looked like this was going to be a great inning and then the home run followed by the walk those are the two things that have really plagued Zack through the halfway point of this season and that brings up Kyle Teal trying to atone for his pass ball it would have been a one two three first for Shawn Burke he would have struck out the side instead it allowed the inning to progress to Naylor who hit a two-run homer runner gets a huge jump that pitch is in the strike zone and the throw not going to be in time gallon really paid him no mind and Vargas was more than happy to take his fourth stolen base of the year mccann had to throw that from his knees that was his only choice and even then it wasn’t particularly close really good caught stealing percentage for McKenna he had no chance though on that play as now the 01 steal is a second strike change up count nothing and two austin Slater has now moved to the on deck circle from Luis Robert Jr we’re in the bottom of the first as this O2 pitch swung on guided foul by the rookie Teal we saw that clip a few days ago ellie Delock Cruz in St louis became physically ill at short because of how hot it was not quite the same temperatures here again first pitch temperature at 78° i know it’s really sunny and humid but wonder what the issue is with Robert that would extract him from the game so early gallons 02 again swung on line into left center field a base hit that is going to bring home Vargas and just like that we’re tied at two teal saw only off speed pitches two curve balls and two change ups and never had to adjust for a fast ball he just stays on that change up the other way slaps it into center and then here comes that pinch hitter second big league RBI for Teal now here is Austin Slater so Obviously if we get an update on Luis Robert we will pass it along did seem like he was carrying an injury coming into this series and in fact had homework yesterday slater hitting 232 this year not a huge power guy couple homers on the season five RBI’s usually if it’s off the bench they bring him in to hit against a left-handed pitcher but these are different circumstances as that fast ball is a called strike and the cow nothing and one Dbacks to White Socks two think the word is out on for other teams that Gallon when he gets ahead he really wants guys to chase so if you stay patient he’ll get you back in the count the two-2 swung on grounded weekly up the Major League Baseball is Catel Marte so you’re probably not going to get a whole lot of run there as this one to pitch and that is low two balls two strikes going back to the beginning of July last year there has not been a more productive third baseman in Major League Baseball than Au Haney Suarez who’s hit 46 homers over his last 163 games swing and a miss on the 2-2 and Sosa strikes out the infield’s a tough spot to crack if that’s where you’re at and good thing for Gallon right there the first swing and miss at a breaking ball so far and that’s the pitch he really needs to have working and it did look like to put it frankly when Lawler was called up this year he just did not look either comfortable or quite ready yet with some of the swing decisions as Rojas the former Diamondback takes a strike from Gallon and the count is nothing at one but I do think there is also an argument to be made it’s really hard as the 01 pitch rojos swings pops it up out of play to just get a start every third or fourth day particularly as a young player it’s not just read and react at this level there’s so much that goes on and when you’re kind of taken out of that everyday role as a young player it can be really hard to adapt on top of that feeling like you feel like you have to justify your promotion the 02 outside it’s now a ball in two strikes so just because it didn’t work out in 23 and it didn’t work out this time in 25 it was on Burns and Gamble at one point they asked your level of concern one two that’s going to miss two balls two strikes zero negative a,000 i mean it’s so low because it’s such an unusual role that he was thrust in yeah you want to give him a chance to have regular reps before you judge his ability at this level the 22 swung on Rojos just get a piece of it i do think the Diamondbacks have a very difficult decision to make with Auano Suarez who not only has been as we mentioned incredibly productive for this group but has taken on a sizable leadership role within that clubhouse and if the Diamondbacks do intend on keeping Suarez then a a larger discussion about whether the best thing for both the Diamondbacks and Lawler might be entertaining a trade not saying they’re there yet but it is something to consider the 22 and that one’s going to be low full count now yeah as you mentioned up the middle is a tough spot to crack predomo Marte figured to be there for the next several years together here’s the payoff and Rojos out in front pops it up and coming in the center fielder Thomas he will make the catch and they’re now two down for missed for Zack now nine home runs in his last five starts was that number continues to climb the O1 at the knees for a called strike nothing into the count two outs the 02 pitch and Rojas takes away one and two the count they keep turning over every stone shaking every tree trying to find the answers as the one two now swung on that is stung towards the gap in right center it’s not going to be him to swing at something in the dirt off the plate he tries to go right back to the fast ball and just misses in the zone something you can’t do with two strikes i mean the reality is a lot of Gallons issues right it’s not a decrease in velocity it doesn’t look like the pitch shape has gotten much worse but some of the decision making on what to throw and what counts that has been extraordinarily problematic and Gallon very often likes to call his own game likes to make his own decisions as most starting pitchers should right it’s their game they should be responsible for the good and the bad but it’s getting to a point now where maybe there needs to be some consideration about having somebody else call the pitches cuz you’re right an O2 fast ball middle down it just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense especially after you just rattled off his numbers he’s hitting well below 200 here’s the pitch to Taylor and that is a check swing strike it was a onew count correction there but still yeah he just missed with a fast ball away seemed perfect to throw change up or breaking ball down over there for weak contact runner at second two outs there one taylor Alexander home with the pitch good take that time the sweeper and McCann saw it all the way low two and one almost everything moves he throws cutter sweeper sinker and change up because it’s not the velocity that’s going to get you here comes the two-1 swing and a miss a high fast ball right at the top of the box and the count evened up at two balls and two strikes the 2-2 and that’s high full count first base is available and it would be left on left against Thomas but still if you’re man got to be ready for that fast ball in the zone and now he’s going to ask for time this looks so count two of those coming today the last inning from Gle and then the homer a batter ago three and two on Rojos the pitch from Scott swung on hit out to center field and Thomas moving on to the edge before we went into the break it’s a five-4 road trip for the Diamondbacks they got two series win they suffered the loss to the series to the Toronto Blue Jays and they could have had that series as well had the ninth inning and the opener gone maybe a little bit differently but Coley this just kind of describes the season for the Dbacks and we thought that at this point in the year particularly with these matchups that the Dbacks would be able to go on a charge to really thrust themselves right back in the division conversation certainly in the wild card standings and they only won one more game than they lost and that’s just kind of how it’s been for this group as their neverending battle with 500 continues it is they It’s like they’re tethered to 500 they’re only allowed to go so far above or so far below and keep getting close and ping-ponging back and forth across that number but a game right here that very reminiscent of that last game in Colorado that offense just fell flat and it wasn’t that the pitching was great that they just couldn’t really get any rally going and I mean it could have even been worse in terms of the offense because all three runs unearned there’s a chance that no one would have scored now there’s an expression sometimes you are what your numbers say you are and at times that’s a little bit disingenuous but for Zack Allen today he picks up his ninth loss of the season eight more hits to a struggling offense of the White Sox he gives him five runs his ERA now increases up to 5.75 and the reality is it’s the same things that continue to happen for him more home runs allowed more bloated innings and at some point the Diamondbacks they’re going to have to make a decision is this fixable or do they have to start trying to maybe slot him back as a number four or number five in this rotation they’d have a chance coming out of the All-Star break you can set your rotation exactly how you want it we’ll see certainly the way he’s throwing right now and stick to a two nothing lead after the first that homer by Naylor and you’re all right he’s got a lead again let’s see if he can do something with it two quick outs and then all of a sudden bad pitch selection to Ben Intendy’s a home run but he follows that up with a walk stolen base and a single all of a sudden at the tie game and I think he’s probably thinking again oh here we go Sza with two homers those are launchers of the game inspired by Honeywell Honeywell the future is what we make it so look the Dbacks long road trip grueling exacting a physical toll on this team as they lost a couple guys to injury you’re hoping that Suarez going to be back in the starting lineup up on Friday a day off going to reset the pitching but now you look at these three against the Marlins marlins as we mentioned playing a much better brand of baseball as of late they still have two games against the Giants they won’t have an off day going into that Friday series opener and with now about a month before the trade deadline it’s now or never this team has to make a push or this front office is going to have to make some difficult decisions and that includes potentially being sellers of the deadline and they were getting great starting pitching and again you just wonder can some of those guys recapture the form and the way that Zack you were talking about second highest qualified erra fought right behind them at the third worst so there’s a couple guys going bad in this rotation and they really need to fix that if they want to make a charge but this next home stand and then the road trip uh tomorrow you got to rest up get all the rest you want because it’s a sprint into the all-star break where they play 16 straight games we will see how the Diamondbacks do this one by a final score of 7-3 the Dbacks will have to settle for the series credit to the White Socks for a pretty solid pitching performance and for keeping the Arizona offense at bay the White Socks were the better team today as there is no sweep at right field chicago wins it 7-3 welcome to Diamond Talk everybody i’m Steve Zinsmeister after two great games for the Diamondbacks they just couldn’t quite cap off the series with a sweep shawn Burke outdoled Zack Allen this afternoon on the mound burke turned in five innings with just two runs allowed neither of them earned he struck out seven and gave his team a great opportunity to win here this afternoon and the White Sox bullpen did a pretty decent job as well allowing just the one run late zack Allen was not very effective again today he allowed five runs in five and a third innings eight hits including two long balls and it’s been the home runs that have plagued him a bit this season 19 of them total now gave up a solo home run to Andrew Benendi as well as a two-run blast to Lenin Sosa sosa went on to hit another home run in the later innings too for Gallon that’s now four straight starts with at least four runs allowed and everything seems to be happening with two outs in the inning we’ll dive a little bit deeper into that observation here in a few minutes but that’s that was kind of a hunch that I had based on some of the results I’ve been seeing from Gallon and turns out there might be a trend there so we’ll talk more about that here in a few chicago’s offense was much better today they had three guys with three hits mike Tachman the leadoff hitter had three singles although he never scored in the game kyle Teal had two singles and a double he scored twice and Lenin Sosa as I mentioned player of the game in this one hands down with three hits two of them home runs he drove in four runs total and was the driving force behind this win for Chicago and it’s weird because it was not a clean game for Chicago by any means they got caught stealing once another runner made a really bad decision to tag up from first base but got lucky in avoiding the tag they made two errors in the eighth inning leaving the door kind of cracked open for the D-bags to possibly make a comeback which they ultimately did not and then a popup that could have ended the game right behind home plate but it fell nowhere near the catcher just not a good day for the White Socks from a fundamental standpoint but they had already built up enough of a lead that it didn’t end up mattering so no sweep today for the Dbacks but they will settle for the series victory seven to3 the final score as the Diamondbacks will jump on a plane heading for home this afternoon time to get ready for the Miami Marlins on Friday
