MLB LIVE🔴 Chicago Cubs vs St. Louis Cardinals – Jun 25, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
live from Bush Stadium in St louis Missouri MLB The Show has action out of the NL Central it’s the Chicago Cubs taking on the St louis Cardinals all right we’ll be back to get this one started after this so just about set now towing the slab in today’s game matthew Liberator and Singi we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots i’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure he’s more calm and settles in he’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position and most guys they get a little tight they start to aim the baseball but for some reason he gets looser the ball comes out of his hand with more life and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of you know tough situations and get his team back in the dugout swinging a ground ball and the first out of the game is an easy one here’s a look at the Cubs lineup all right Sigy how about all the talent in this lineup they’re deep first and foremost but the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else it’s uh very intelligent the way that they use their team and I I think it creates a little bit of uh uncertainty for opposing teams especially in a big game big series that one ripped but fouled tucker former fifth overall pick in the 2015 draft by the Astros this guy’s turned into a whale of a player next offering is down low tucker hits for power he’s got 30 homer power but the strikeout rate is under 20% so a foul ball makes it one and two just misses the mark outside the zone well he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count knows the strike zone very well so much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not aronado score at 53 for the second out with a third baseman shifted over there batting third right fielder Seiya Suzuki two outs space is empty seiya Suzuki the next Cub to hit ground ball left side handles throws to first and the Cubs go one two three nothing happening there for the Cubs now the Cardinals will see what they can do there’s no score you’re dialed into the show back here at Bush Stadium getting the nod in this one ben Brown well what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season so when you consider consistency the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners that’s critical in winning games today especially when teams are depending on the big swing the home run to win ball games bottom of the first now it’s the DH brendan Donovan just missed ball one no strikes [Applause] [Music] the one right through there for a strike [Applause] that one outside two and one [Applause] well they call that an advantage count for a reason you’re so much more likely to get something you can handle that’s a good sound coming off the bat man and as he connected out front and lifted into the outfield that’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel that’s a pure stroke mason Win will hit next it’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month brother at first with no outs here one and one [Applause] next offering is outside oh he doesn’t get the call and now three and one and that drops in for a strike was a good change up to hit up in the zone i don’t think he recognized it i’m sure he’d love to have that one back swing and a miss struck him out he’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field he was out in front there just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track good pitch for the strike out and now the right fielder Alec Burlson missed inside with the curb [Applause] and the right-hander deals next pitch in for a strike and it’s one and one [Music] bottom of the zone and a cold strike ball two donovan over at first with one away [Music] and it remains two and two foul ball left side he’ll see another [Music] strike three and that’s two in a row it’s a strike out but they’ll be in good shape if they make their outs as difficult as that one those grinding abs take a toll on a pitch as the game goes on and up to hit is Wilson Contrarus swagging a ball hit out towards left center field grabs it on the run and that’s the inning the Cards leave one scoreless after one back here in St louis top of the second so now it’s the Cubs hitter in the four hole dansby Swanson matthew Liberator back to work and that’s downstairs and outside [Music] that one down the line and it goes just foul [Applause] that missed by a lot and it’s two and two and that’s down and away and down on strikes one out in second that’s just a nasty pitch right there i’m not surprised at all that he got the strike out looking plate looks like it’s a fast ball off the corner the entire way until just that very last second when that cutting action takes over and brings it back to cliff the outside corner you just got to tip your cap sometimes but overall that’s just a nasty pitch and now it’s going to be Pete Crow Armstrong that catches the outside corner and one liberator he’s the kind of starter that a lot of pitching coaches and managers as well really appreciate not a guy who’s gonna get himself into trouble by dancing around by walking guys next offer is in for a strike yeah he throws strikes and you know he’s got the command to be in the zone be effective but just moving the ball around getting the ball back from the catcher boo and throwing the pitch slider got him for strike three well that’s the money maker right there two strikes Slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter i mean that’s just tough you’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off carson Kelly at the plate and takes high there it’s an interesting thing when you consider limiting walks is it more important today because of how many home runs are being hit no doubt keeping guys off the base pass with the way the swings and the launch angles are today the emphasis of hitting home runs is so huge it’s never been more important and that’s a little bit high and it’s two in one yeah i think the other part though as well is it goes both ways because I think that guys at times are more than willing to give up walks because they’ll come back and strike the next guy out we got full count really good take especially with two strikes st louis two down doon stays alive no score here in the second i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts impeccable command in that one three batters three strikeouts that’s electric stuff out there on the mound back in St louis as the Cardinals come up to hit here in the last of the second now the left fielder Lars Newbar first offering and it just misses good spot there but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone the one and another ball gary Simmons has the plate duty in this one well with Simmons it’s not always your standard strike zone boog kind of gives a little extra in some parts of the zone and then can be tighter in others but I think the important thing is he doesn’t get labeled as inconsistent so you got to stay ready up there [Applause] that one misses so a lead off walk just came apart right there four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of his own here’s Nolan Aronado [Applause] right through there for a strike there it was a high velocity fast ball in the zone i think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter he’s got good stuff pitch inside the zone and trust it all right the 01 just missed no that’s low [Music] at 96 that pitch is in for a strike good approach right there you want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate stay out of that double play got him swinging that K is his third of the game that’s tough you see it well i mean that was clearly up and out of the strike zone but that’s one of the hardest things and when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level that discipline to remember I can’t hit that pitch if I can see it really well at eye level I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity here’s Nolan Gorman and there’s the ball man at first one away [Music] highfly ball on that one curling foul down the right side [Applause] that’s inside two strike [Applause] hit in the air left field coming on is half he’s there to make the catch and there’s two down batting eight catcher Pedro P and now the Cardinals catcher Pedro Pah [Applause] ball one there [Applause] fast ball for a strike misses inside and it’s two and one boo he never moved cuz he never had time to with that kind of velocity you’d prefer that pitcher work away come on there’s the strike looks like he’s just sizing him up there really good pitch to hit but he took it all the way sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game that may be a pitch that he turns on two outs foul ball another two- two upcoming got him swinging he chased the change up he’s notched four strikeouts now so one left for the Cardinals we’ll move to the third with no score top half of the third inning nico her will come up to hit he’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season chris line to left and it stays fair around first and hustling for second the throw in not in time that’s a leadoff double waste no time there ripped that one down the line and kept it fair and even when you hit it that far out front you still have to keep your hands tight to your body so you don’t hook around that baseball and put it in foul territory and that right there was perfect runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game here’s Turner now his next home run will be the 200th in his career it would be pretty cool to see it right here and one Turner with just one more homer to reach the 200 career mark runner in scoring position nobody out we’re here in the top half of inning number three next pitch is inside and the count is one and one you know we usually talk about bigger numbers when it comes to homers but only about 400 major leaguers have ever hit 200 roundt trippers in their careers he’s putting himself in great company man at second in the air right field and it falls here’s the throw to the plate but it’s offline and it’s one- nothing well he wasn’t afraid to hit with two strikes i think he choked up a little bit maybe spread out but he got the job done right there here’s the rookie third baseman Matt Shaw [Applause] and that one clips the corner [Music] [Applause] not even close there and the count even one and one turner aboard here at first with nobody out [Applause] the one-1 is fouled off [Applause] swings and misses struck him out oh really went aggressive in with that slider good two strike pitch right there at worst case scenario it’s weak contact in play exactly where he and the catcher wanted it so the batting order turns over in half up to hit 0 for one he grounded out in his first at bat that one misses ball one [Applause] runner on the go in the air left field nukebar sizes this one up hauls it in for the owl two down now batting designated hitter Kyle Tucker here’s Kyle Tucker grounded out his first time taken high in the draft he’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level and that clips the inside corner tucker in his sixth season 28 years old he’s usually in right field but today he’s getting the DH treatment out towards right center that’s well struck and it’s into the gap cut off throw to second not going to get him he’s in there now that pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay so two down now it’s the right fielder Sea Suzuki he’s 0 for one blinded into right and that’s the third out but the RBI single pushes across a run it’s now one- nothing it’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show set for the bottom of the third and now here’s the speed threat outfielder Victor Scott [Applause] 10 [Applause] next offering is in for a strike the one-1 is fouled off the one two ripped in the air left field and a touchdown for a base hit so now back to the top of the order really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat i love that swing and I’m sure his hitting coach does even more took a pitch right on the low outside corner of the zone and just ripped it for a base hit and that’s easier said than done and now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first back to the leadoff spot in the St louis lineup next is the designated hitter Brendan Donovan first pitch just misses no strike [Music] [Applause] runner on the goal pitch misses inside throw save and the tying run is now in scoring position sigy he definitely showed off the wheels there yeah and it turned out to be a bang bang play statcast gives us the data and that stolen base wasn’t possible without that sprint speed [Applause] that one misses and the count is three in one evidently not too impressed with that call and it feels like he got squeezed on the outside corner so he’s making his case you’ve got to be careful to pick your spots in terms of showing your frustration with the umpire and he felt this was his time right side corner one gone bottom of the third inning that’s a good piece of hitting right there it’s early but you still want to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score that’s exactly what happened so you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat [Applause] on the ground and it’s just fouled that was close [Applause] next offering in there for a strike and it’s 0 and two came a little frustrated with the strike zone [Applause] next offering is downstairs one away with a runner at third here in the last half of the third [Applause] the shorts stop takes the ball [Applause] down [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] two two on the way on the ground right side and that’s just foul you can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch but just a little tardy on the fast ball got him looking now five strikeouts for him on the mound well they were pretty much giving it to him right there playing the infield back all you’re looking for on offense is a simple ground ball you got a tie ball game not sure what he was thinking up there strike out looking is the last thing you want to see now you got to hope the next guy can pick you up and come through with a big two out hit and up next for St louis Alec Burlson went down on strikes his first time through and he takes one right on the black that’s strike one runner at third two away [Applause] and a curve is down and in [Music] [Applause] next pitch is outside two and one the count now he hasn’t seen a fast ball yet but you’ve got to be ready to hit one because you doubt the pitcher wants this to go to a 3-1 count ripped to third but handled and that’ll end the inning [Music] back here in St louis start of the fourth and now it’s Dansby Swanson first pitch and he just misses [Applause] and delivers outside come on let’s go and a base hit and a good start to the inning well patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count other than ripping one into the gap or blasting one over the wall there aren’t a whole lot of hits that are more satisfying than a nice line drive into center field so that definitely felt good pete Crow Armstrong the next to hit 0 for one he struck out swinging last time bounding ball here rolls foul run around to first and he breaks for second the tag and he’s out at second just missed one out base is empty that’s out to center field scott sizing this one up they got it for out number two now batting catcher Carson Kelly and now the batter is Carson Kelly struck out swinging his first time popped in the air left field nukebar settles underneath it and that is that And we’re back bottom of the fourth wilson Contrarus now up to the plate wilson Contrarus [Applause] rips one to right suzuki puts it away for the out and there’s one down now batting left fieldielder and now Lars Nar he reached out to walk his first time line drive base hit down the line so they get a man aboard with a one out single i’m sure he feels really good about that one he put a great swing on that ball took the barrel right to it nice extension as well 105 exit velocity that tells you everything you need to know about that swing here’s Nolan Aronado he was a strikeout victim his first time [Applause] and that is out of play tying run is at first we’re here in the bottom of the fourth headed towards the corner suzuki running hard for it snags it on the run two away now now batting second baseman Nolan now up for St louis Nolan Gorman [Applause] fast ball for a strike at 95 he’s pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success but you can never predict baseball squirts away a little bit [Applause] hit hard on the ground and up the middle base hit throw in holds the lead runner at second two on now with two away couldn’t get any air under it but he smoked that ball back up the middle timing was just perfect got great wood on it and there was just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it first and second two outs pah now at the plate just missed swinging a foul out of play instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in next offering is in for a strike nbar at second norman at first two out of the inning [Music] that misses two and two [Applause] out to center crow Armstrong should have it he’s got it that is the inning so the Cards strand a couple and it remains one- nothing and welcome back to the ballpark so here’s her now nico her liberator back to work up and in and that’s ball one and that one hit 97 on the gun i got one ball one strike [Applause] and the swing and a miss he picks up his fifth strike out on the hill man that slider bearing in on your hands like that it’s just so tough to fight off it’s kind of like a cutter it just can eat you off saw you off i tell you what hitters have nightmares about that pitch perfectly executed out there on the mound and it’ll bring up Justin Turner one home run shy of 200 for his career out to short win fires over to first and a couple of quick outs now batting third baseman Matt Shaw two down base is empty matt Shaw getting ready to hit he struck out swinging at his first atbat swung on belted that’s back there and gone he crushes that one to center field third home run of the season and they add to their lead it’s two nothing well he went up there O looking to do damage i think he had his sight set on that pitch he went and got it and circled the bases back to the leadoff spot in the Cubs lineup ian Hat digs in now and first offering is fouled off [Applause] and a strike in there two outs base is empty [Applause] blows the high heat past them that’s a strike out one scores in the inning coming on this solo home run and it’s two zip back after this on the show back here at Bush Stadium john Shami with my buddy Chris Singleton and set to get us started bottom five victor Scott let’s go [Applause] that’s in there strike one activity in the bullpen cade Horton up and throwing for manager Craig Councel keller warming up as well and there’s a foul ball [Music] [Music] off the mark there and the count is one and two was good pitch there really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout chris as we look back at the pitch sequence he hadn’t seen that curveball at all how tough is it to adjust to something like that with a bunch of break when you haven’t had a look at it yet yeah I mean you’re dialed up for something firm you never want to take a called third strike as a fast ball so you’re going to be a little anxious before you recognize the pitch and right there clearly didn’t see what was coming now a chance for Brendan Donovan base is empty one away last half of inning number five next pitch is downstairs one and one that’s ball two [Applause] ripped to the right center base hit so a man aboard now with one away showed some really nice patience in that at bat worked himself into a good count fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter so no surprise he put a great swing on it mason win next up for the Cardinals bowl for two in this one fast ball for a strike donovan at first one gone the shorts stop takes a ball [Applause] and a foul ball swag and a miss struck him out picks up strikeout number seven oh tough night at the dish punching out for the third time right there he just doesn’t look very comfortable with the plate a little unsure of his timing right now not picking up the spin and location of these pitches he’ll have some adjustments to make [Applause] and that one wrapped foul he’s begging give me that pitch one more time a hanging change up just out in front two outs that one misses and now it’s even one and one [Applause] close but called a ball three and one oh they have had a hard time scoring in this one the pitcher out there on the mound wants to keep attacking make sure that they don’t get any confidence [Music] fouls one away and now three and two great RBI spot here just got to stay focused on the pitch the runner will be in motion so something in the gap should definitely score it lifted in the air now the left side and that will drop foul and ball forward to a board n what he wanted to do there boo that keeps this inning alive and gives this offense a good chance to cut into their deficit first and second two outs wilson Contrus next up for the Cardinals [Applause] strike one and I know you want to be patient as a hitter but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight and he got one right there but left the bat on his shoulder high fly ball right field this could go the distance home run he circles the bases his 11th of the year and it gives him the lead in the pit it’s 3-2 the one thing the pitcher didn’t want to happen just happened that’s not an easy one to stomach [Applause] [Applause] thank you [Applause] here comes the manager out of the Cubs dugout and he will make a move to the pad ben Brown won’t go any further tonight just never found his groove wasn’t able to settle in new arm coming on back in a moment new pitcher in the game for the Cubs Cade Horton and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year the numbers stack up with some of the best in the game kade Horton lars Nukebar next up for the Cardinals delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 [Applause] and that skips in the dirt so a foul ball makes it one and two [Applause] fouls that off to the left and will do it again fouls it off still one and two [Applause] struck him out looking flipped the bottom of the zone with a curve for strike three but the biggest swing of the inning comes right here a three-run homer it’s now a 32 ball game you’re watching Major League Baseball on the show top of the sixth inning now the number two hitter Kyle Tucker kyle Tucker well after scoring runs this is where you’re looking for that shut down inning get that hot team back in there to swing the bats that one close rule the ball and it’s one and0 that one missed and another ball almost feel like he’s frustrated a little bit he wants to be challenged seya Suzuki in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here [Applause] that one finds the zone three and one [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] fought off foul [Applause] foul we’ll see another payoff pitch that one misses so a lead off walk his ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one suzuki no outs runner at first seya Suzuki the next come to hit [Applause] there goes Tucker line drive no trouble here puts it away for the eye and there’s one down up next to the short Danby Swanson and here comes Dansby Swanson one for two [Applause] and that is in for a strike it’s 0 and one [Applause] and that one fouled off [Applause] to short could be two there’s one to first but they beat him [Applause] pete Crow Armstrong the next Cub to hit pete Crow Armstrong [Music] [Applause] and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike with the go-ahead run at the plate and we’re the top half of the six swaging a ball hit out towards left center field reaching for makes the catch so it’s no runs on no hits no errors and one left on base 678 do in the bottom of the sixth it’s the Cardinals three and the Cubs two bottom of the six here’s the third baseman Nolan Aronado high in the air out to right suzuki on the move and he makes the catch and a quick out number one almost a loud start to the inning on that first pitch man he’s going to want that one back no doubt so up next Nolan Gordon [Applause] a swing and a miss and that’s strike one action in the paint down there brad Keller up and throwing for manager Craig Councel brazier also getting ready and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again one down base is empty and that just misses that one called just inside I think and on the mound he’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it though but he clearly thought it clipped the corner that misses the zone now two and two that one just misses swing in a miss struck him out now two away well he didn’t get the call on the mound the pitch before felt like he should have had him looking I think but you know that’s good composure right there he found a way to come back with another good pitch to get him to swing and miss foul ball pahes goes 5′ 11 in 26 years old and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2019 toss to Turner and that is the third out of the inning one two three go to Cardinals but they’re up three to two new inning getting started now the Cubs catcher Carson Kelly off of the Cubs catcher Carson Kelly [Applause] there’s the strike that was just paint on the first pitch fast ball move into the bullpen for the Cardinals phil Mat up and throwing number 35 a hard throwing right-hander up as well looking to get the tying run on base and a curve misses outside and it’s one and one [Applause] late swing fouled off one and two here that one way inside straighten him up a little bit [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] spoils that one and it remains two and two swung on popped up on the infield and Aronado makes the catch one away [Applause] now batting second base here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen matthew Liberator won’t go any further and a nice effort out of him no doubt new arm coming on we’ll be back for that in a moment now pitching phil M gets handed the rock out of the pen well he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season you usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him here’s Nicoer swinging a liner foul off to the right trying to hold a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven next one misses one ball one strike [Music] that misses off the outside edge that’s off the inside corner and that’s ball three first pitch strike from the pitcher but then no panic at all by the hitter very patient showing good discipline now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count and the tying run is on base up next for the Cubs one gone runner at first and here’s the first baseman Justin Turner [Applause] that’s a bullet but it goes foul [Applause] and that’s in the dirt oh one strike [Applause] pickoff move to first horner back in on a dive [Applause] swang at a line drive that’s a base hit into center field just kind of slice that one into center oh just a nice job coming through in a pretty high leverage spot right there everything was on time and fluid in that swing got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock those always feel good now we’ll see if they can pick up that tying run and start us over here in the late innings so the tying run in scoring position now now the third baseman Matt Shaw and that one is downstairs ball one at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot anything but the inning ending double play boo [Applause] two on one out swings through the fast ball up in the zone one and one [Applause] that’s in there it’s a ball in two shots one out the possible tying and go-ahead runs on base fights that one away still one and two [Applause] way to lay off that pitch down outside three and two now at this point in the game you cannot issue free passes he’s going to have to challenge this hitter hitter’s got to be ready to swing it ninth pitch of the at bat do next [Applause] fly ball down the line and that’s a foul ball well he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him as a hitter you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact now a highf fly ball out to left center nuke Bar moves under it calls it in and there’s two away every day during batting practice these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps they practice this and when the game comes they make the play perfectly here comes the manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pan phil Mahon done for the night and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base back with a new pitcher after this now pitching new pitcher for the Cardinals number 35 these are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close there’s not much margin for error but at the same time there’s a reason they’re put in these situations and the batter now Ian Hat 0 for three in this one this is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation yeah Boo not sure what the numbers say but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically [Applause] first pitch doesn’t find the zone you don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one [Applause] drilled in the air high and deep right field that’s back there and that one is out of here he shoots one out to right his 12th of the season and the Cubs have the lead now it’s 53 these fans are dealing with some heartbreak right now that was one of those home runs where you really don’t know if he got enough of it off the bat i mean he put a good swing on it clearly but I wouldn’t say he really got the sweet spot on the bat the exit vo wasn’t anything too impressive but it had all it needed for him to circle the pillows so here’s Kyle Tucker now and first offering is fouled off [Applause] that’s a ball [Applause] foul ball there [Applause] that one is absolutely belted that’s back there out of here they do it again backto back homers and they tack on to their lead it’s 6-3 back-to-back homers always a special feeling at the ballpark especially if it’s your team that does it and those guys get to slap hands at home plate this is the kind of thing that can really fire up a ball club and up next for Chicago Seiya Suzuki [Applause] and that’s fouled off [Applause] two down on ball that’s outside [Applause] drilled out towards left center field that’s well struck headed one hops the wall now he’ll turn for second and he’s in with a stand up double drove that ball nicely put a great swing on it and it jumped off his bat kind of put it all together there he’s rewarded with the double here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot number 35 out of the game and he’s responsible for the runner on second so the book isn’t closed on him yet we’ll be right back now pitching Sunny Gray comes on now he last pitched two days ago sunny Gray danby Swanson is going to get a chance to hit one for three swinging a foul straight back here [Applause] comes the 01 and that’s through there for a strike well that’s really the money spot down and away if you can locate that consistently it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that off that’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen and that’s off the inside edge and it’s one and two [Music] man on second two down foul ball still a one and two count [Applause] ground ball up the middle that’s a base hit rounds third headed for the plate he’ll score easily it’s an RBI single and they’re up by four you know it certainly feels good when you can win the at bat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there once you get the ball by the pitcher there’s a lot of base hits up the middle even on ground ball so a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit two outs runner at first and next for the Cubs Pete Crow Armstrong ground ball to the right side contras takes it to the bag and they’re happy to just get off the field after that frame but two round tripers in this inning the long ball was working it’s now a four-run lead at 73 you’re watching Major League Baseball on the show back here in St louis bottom of the seventh and stepping in for the Cardinals Victor Scott if there’s nobody on in front of him you know a single for him many times is a double this guy is off to the races ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter that one finds the zone no balls two strikes well he didn’t like those first two pitches now in an 02 hole he’s going to have to battle hope he gets a mistake good eye in that spot too close for me partner to take that 02 fast but for whatever reasons he let it go by he’s still in the at bat i don’t think he’ll let the next one go yeah that skips in the dirt ah that hit him and the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning so now here’s the Cardinals designated hitter Brendan Donovan now this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here try to close that gap but you know at the very least if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first it feels like it’s really important getting back into this ball game scott gets his lead at first with nobody out nope that’s inside and that one missing inside a sharp slider that one fouled off two and two [Music] that was 95 to finish him off well that was a really good job setting him up right there pitcher and catcher working together to finish him off with the fast ball and even though the location probably wasn’t what he wanted the sequence is what got the job done clearly they with the swing after seeing the off speed stuff on the pitch before swing in a ball line to center cro Armstrong racing over to make the catch wow he looked like he was running before the ball was hit didn’t have much time as that was a hard hit liner but a nice job of covering a lot of ground in a short amount of time batting and now the right fielder Alec Burlson burlson ball one no strikes well if he’s going to steal second you want him to go early in the count that way he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch the 1-1 is fouled off [Music] on the ground right side horner the throw to first that’s the third out the Cards leave one they’re down four it’s seven to three and we’re back we’re in the top of the eighth so up now for Chicago Carson Kelly gray back to work ripped to third throws across the diamond leadoff man is out here in the eighth now batting second baseman Nicoer so digging in Nicoer he’s kind of an outlier especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power swinging a ground ball up the middle sneaks through base hit boo i don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock one down now it’s Justin Turner oh he doesn’t get the call and that’s ball one yeah his swing is so good it’s in the zone a long time he gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits throw St louis come on St louis here goes the runner swinging a miss throw save you know having a good lead is so key when you’re stealing bases even if you’ve got great speed but if you don’t have great speed but can get an extended lead and a good jump you can steal bases on a catcher who can really throw it that’s a nice job right there one out and a runner at second and we’re in the top of the eighth and that one is inside singi one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore so when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this do you think of that as plus value absolutely if he’s doing damage now if he’s rolling over and and grounding out then it’s a different story but yeah if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence 100% here’s the third baseman Matt Shaw he’s already homered here in this one and that’s downstairs and that is ball one horner at second with two down and that one misses up and in and that’s ball two yeah and the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage slings to first out number three cubs leave one but they lead it by four it’s 73 now pitching for back now new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth brad Keller he has a great slider with tons of movement here’s Contrarus now he’s already homered in this game we’ll see one of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter [Music] yeah and I figured you would get caught into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night that is true tapped softly on the ground swanson tosses to first one gone in the bottom of the eighth now batting left fielder Lars Nbar next up for the Cardinals newbar [Music] that’s through there for a strike movement in the Cubs bullpen number 51 up and throwing for manager Craig Council next offering down low and in the dirt the Cubbies leading by four here the bottom half of the eighth inning that’s outside two and one in the air to left center cro Armstrong makes the play and there are two outs now batting third base two outs base is empty and up next for St louis Nolan Aronado 0 for three with two flyyous and a strikeout just missed [Music] breaking ball inside and the count is two and0 in today’s game not that many fast ball counts but hitters still in the back of their minds they’re looking for one two change up call right there excellent pitch selection to go with two outs swing and a ground ball base hit right field [Applause] up next for the Cardinals now up for St louis Nolan Gorman gorman fast ball for a strike oh and one come on that one’s in there and it’s on two and a bat like this is almost over as it begins in this situation you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be you just got to hope that you can make contact and that one hammered that’s back tattooed to town and gone his second homer this series it’s 75 they needed that one Singy indeed they did they’ve been fighting to get back into this game and just like that they’re back in it [Applause] oh that one got in the jetream on a line drive you saw the numbers on the backs of the jerseys of the outfielders which is usually bad news and all of a sudden they’re back in this ball game base is empty with two away pedro Pahz next up for the Cardinals there’s a strike [Applause] [Music] [Applause] got him swinging but not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast it’s now 75 major League Baseball is on the show now it’s the switch hitting outfielder Ian Half probably feeling pretty good about himself based on that big swing of the bat in the seventh well he should be feeling good but I mean a three-run shot beautiful swing and of course it’s made a big impact on the score in this one so you always love it when you do something special like that and it impacts the ball game half lays off action in the St louis bullpen jojo Romero the southpaw is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in king also throwing [Music] [Applause] not close with that one two and O [Applause] there’s the strike two balls one strike that one pushed to the left and fouled two and he couldn’t hold back he’s run up on strikes so now here’s the DH Kyle Tucker that’s in there that’s strike one [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] and there’s a ball pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there if you’re smart to look for something down in the zone but not too far don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt and that’s a base hit around first digging for two throws to second and he’s out got along the hustle and the attitude there to try to stretch that single into a double but unfortunately thrown out at second base he was so close to being in scoring position two down base is empty and up next for Chicago Sea Suzuki fast for a strike and one two down nobody on here in the top of the ninth swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field and that’ll do it one hit in the inning but no one left and 912 scheduled to lead off the bottom of the ninth it’s the Cubs seven and the Redbirds five we’re back and on the mound is the closer Daniel Palencia he’s thrown the ball very well overall this season he’s been really tough to get to you see that that’s where you love to be victor Scott now at the plate the pitch oh that plunked him and that’s now twice he’s been hitting this one st louis so back to the top of the order and here’s the St leadoff man Brendan Donovan fast ball in for a strike going on just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days i never would have had a chance and fouled off with two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here tying run at the plate that’s the third shaw toss the second they get the double play and just one out to go now well it’s a huge ball in play to get the double play defensively just one more guy to get this save for the closer so they’re down to their final out and now Mason Win just missed two down on [Applause] sends it to center and that’s going to do it ball game well this was a fun game all the way around we saw plenty of action 12 runs total on the board but a pretty close finish at the end a 75 final score in this one the Cubs go home a winner for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show i’m John Shami we’ll see you soon
