Dallas Stars Captain Jamie Benn Signs 1-Year Contract Extension | DLLS Stars Emergency Pod

[Music] [Applause] [Music] heat heat [Music] this is a DLLS Stars Emergency Pod let’s clear the throat and get ready for one brought to you by Happiest Hour and by Bud Light john Shapiro Craig Lewig Sam Nestler I’m Owen Newark why are we doing an emergency C pod this morning well if you clicked on the link on the thumbnail on YouTube you saw Jamie Ben has signed that’s right sam even wore the proper shirt this morning sam it’s dirty oh that’s gross sean has a cup luds is supporting Miko Ransen i just wore a DLS shirt anyway Jamie Ben has signed a one-year contract extension with the Dallas Stars the terms are relatively as we expected one year $1 million base performance bonuses up to about I believe three million in total which would put it up to 4 million some pretty easy bars to hit until you talk about winning the Stanley Cup uh Sean do you want to break break down the details real quick and then we’ll throw it to Luds for his instant reaction on Jamie yeah just to kind of go over the so it’s for for the bonus structure right so Jamie is eligible for a 35 plus deal um there’s only two types of players eligible for incentive laden deals in the NHL now players on entry level contracts and players who signed that deal after their 35th birthday um and so or on a deal that will go into effect for a season after their 35th birthday um so Jaime’s deal 1 million in base that’s the only thing that automatically goes against the salary cap number for this season gives the stars a lot more flexibility and then Jamie has four half a million dollar inseason bonuses um 20 30 for 20 games played 30 games played 50 games played and 60 games played based off Jaime’s history and how often he frequently plays around 82 games a year we fully expect him to get that three million and then there is a half million dollar bonus if the Stars win the Western Conference final and another half million if the Stars win the Stanley Cup so obviously if Jaime’s making four million this year the Stars as organization are absolutely thrilled and uh they also go into free agency and and everything like this with a little bit of flexibility where uh they can count as Jamie’s a $1 million player for now and and see how much gets put against this year’s cap and how much goes to next so that’s kind of the setup and uh it’s kind of what we expected um a little bit similar to the Taves deal we saw with Winnipeg obviously but not as big of a price point and uh I think it’s for for Ben to come back and this is what the type of deal you’re going to do this is what makes sense for for the team and for the player led there’s no surprise here right we expected Jamie to sign i I only thing that and not even surprising but just we I think it was more hopeful that he would sign the $1 million base as low as possible because it’s more team friendly he’s still going to get his money it’s just that they have the flexibility to move it between this year and next year’s salary cap depending on what fits best uh your initial thoughts of Jamie signing and doing what we all kind of expected him to do yeah I mean for me personally there was never a concern i mean this is nothing new i for him I was kind of hoping he got the Jonathan TA deal i mean but but that’s kind of a special deal so but but again you know Jamie Jaime’s back here because he wants to win a championship and he and this is the only place he knows so I I think that you know just alls we have to do is play about 30 seconds of what Matt Duchain said the other day um about Jamie and so I’m sure that his text messages were probably packed from from his teammates most importantly um not that they didn’t feel and think that he was going to be back so as you said I I don’t think there’s there’s nothing shocking now i think what I I think what we wait for now is a reaction to the fans because it seems like there was there was people on both sides of the aisle so I I and I said this earlier I you know a couple shows ago I I think that you’re going to me personally I think you’re going to see a different Jamie Ben than than we did this past year i I think that he may come back a little bit more motivated he may do something differently in the off season that that and and again you you may think that it would be just the opposite because it’s not $9 million i don’t think Jamie Ben’s the kind of guy that’s about the money jamie Ben is about his teammates and being the best Jaime Ben and best captain he can be sam the expectation was he would be here and we’re going to do a show in a couple hours so I I don’t know if we need to sp spend too much time on this but when you see this is this as to be expected as far as how the Stars offseason moves are coming together yeah I think so i think that if you look at the team right now they haven’t gotten a whole lot better yet but they haven’t gotten worse either i don’t think the the Mason Marshman one was just the way it worked with how with Duchine and obviously now Ben but uh the big question for me is is for Jamie Ben is what role is he going to play and as Led said he’s going to be motivated we know that we know what he means to the leadership we know as a captain all that stuff we already know the question is now can he come in knowing I’m a bottom six guy maybe even a fourth line guy that’s going to play 12 to 14 minutes and not be expected to score 25 goals and maybe that’s the lift off the shoulders that he needs is like go out there score 15 score 10 even but be be the Jaime Ben we know you can be it’s not like he can’t do the the physicality stuff anymore he can’t be the menace that he was he can still do a lot of those things i just think they need to find the right role for him and that that’s what we talked about on yesterday’s show is there’s some empty spots on that left side in the in the wing spots now obviously Marchment leaving uh if Robertson was to go if all that happened even more so so his role is the big question for me and I’m just curious to see if he comes in this year and says “I’m gonna be this guy and I’m gonna help you know young guys that are on the team like he has been doing with Wyatt Johnston and other guys like that but not expected to be the in between maybe he’s going to score 33 goals again i just I don’t think he’s going to and I think it would be good for him and the team to set that expectation going in but as of right now this this is business that needed to get taken care of because this is what the team wanted to do so now it moves forward to the next five days and then July 1 of what what do you do to make this team better and take the next step yeah and Owen did you say that this is coming together i’m Did Did the coach get hired last night and is does Granland sewed up and where’s uh Dumba get traded and Labouchkin and CC are they all still some work to be done isn’t there oh yeah i was wondering where the part came to come together i was No it’s coming together not done yeah yeah no no still in process man I thought I missed something again oh well we we we might we might be emergency potting later today i know Sean like this all this emergency stuff like can we just hold off for an hour and a half till we get into the studio and talk about it maybe the maybe they’ll break the whatever news today while we’re in the studio it be I do have a question though if if there’s an emergency pod after 100 p.m I ain’t going to make it because I won’t get there in time so just throwing that out there that’s not a question it’s a statement yes well okay yeah you’re right you’re right effectively that was a statement not a question well we have a two o’clock show so that’s my point but I got to leave by 12:30 so I’m just saying I ain’t going to be Oh I see what you’re saying yeah know if it’s that close to the show we’ll probably just say wait for our show at 2 o’clock well you don’t have to go ahead and do it it’s fine okay well I might be in the car at that point too so we’ll see or sometime in the next hour and a half after that you’re packing that’s right sean you are not gonna be on the show today unless I mean unless we have a reason for another emergency podcast emergency then maybe we pivot but as it currently stands so the re I want to give you the opportunity to talk through a little bit of the roster that we are going to maybe spend more time in depth and we talked a little bit about this yesterday with Robert Tiffen as well is the Stars left side of their forward depth chart right now does look a little slim so what are your thoughts about where they’re at with Jason Robertson with Jaime Ben and who on the left yeah it’s I mean you’re going to have the whole we can all assume Jason like you guys talked about Mner yesterday and with all like Jason if unless you’re finding a way to move Jason Roberts and Mitch Marty is not coming here so it’s I’m assuming Jason Robertson’s here i mean for me I kind of look at the like the depth chart right now and you’re I am not as sold on Michael Granland coming back to Dallas as you guys are right like I just don’t see the I struggle to see the cap space for it because if he’s going to be male Granland market probably about a $7 million player right like if you’re going off his market rate I’m not saying his want to win a Stanley Cup in Dallas rate i’m just saying like if he went to UFA free agency Male Granland would probably get seven million from Utah to be their first or second center depending on how you want to to play it out so I’m not as sold on Granland coming back and like the left side like you’re looking at probably right now unless you find another way to move some money and do something a little bit creative robertson Ben maybe Oscar Beck on the left and Justin Ritzovian is getting his chance on your fourth line of left wing right like so I kind of that that’s where I see it i I don’t see another big quote unquote big move like you talk about Jamie playing down in the lineup and playing on a third or fourth line he might be higher in the lineup simply by who else is around right like that’s just the just the reality of of his role and also how does the new coach want to play things right like could a Justin Ritzkovian be higher in the lineup right now I’m not sold on Justin Heritzkovian being more than a fourthline energy guy but maybe the new coach loves in comes in and maybe if the new new coach is Neil Graham since we know Neil Graham interviewed for the job that’s one thing we do know we can act in facts neil Graham loves Justin Ritzkov maybe that’s Justin Ritzkovian’s golden ticket to a higher role maybe maybe not i I I don’t see the other big move coming i just there’s not the cap space here even if you trade Dumb Labouchkin I just don’t male Granland taking the hometown discount well it’s not just going to be a hometown discount it would be an extreme hometown discount and I guess maybe we got to give the Finnish contingent a ton of credit for maybe they’re going to maybe Miko Ranton is going to uh siphon some funds away to him that we don’t know about in the Finnish bank account to make it all work they’re in the sauna right now together working on it yes i’m just looking at this right now as of Puck Pedia this morning 980,000 in cap space that is basically covering all minimum deals or up to just about the rookie max I think just about so they that’s where you want to be Sean from a cap space perspective after you’ve named your opening night roster meaning you have room for a call up with an injury i mean you like to be even more than that but that’s in today’s world with where the stars are at that’s to be expected uh but to me Luds Jaime Ben on your second line is not is not a step forward at this stage of his career do you agree well I’m sitting here and I’m listening to Shawn and he makes a ton of sense right so if Granlin’s not back and and you go ahead and you and and Robo’s not moving and then you have uh Rich Kovian you have Beck you have again if it’s Beck if it’s steel Blackwell labushkin Dumba are are we is this team still a contender i mean is it in the same is it got all the same hype that we at started the season last year and if you’re talking about Jamie Ben moving up to the second line when he was actually down on the fourth line so I’m kind of going one step forward three steps back or what are we doing i agree i agree i think they I think they’ve taken they would have taken steps back there’s no way to doubt it that’s why I said yesterday on our show it’s going to be hard for them because you can’t with the way this team is played you can’t just go let’s pump this down to January because regular season success is not the problem with this team they can be first in the in the Western Conference in January and go all right we we’re all set it doesn’t matter it’s it’s a playoff thing so it’s a really hard balance for them to know are we better and are we better for when it matters in April and then you could say the same i mean and we know Marchman’s gone but I mean Marchman was a good player right i mean there was some speed bumps in there but he’s a he’s a number two number three winger right so now he’s not in there how do you feel i mean you’re talking about Granland’s gone Marchman’s gone Robo’s there um I mean is it going to be up to Bourke and and uh Niels I guess to carry us to the finals yeah it’s it’s it’s not it’s it’s the team is the Stars have not gotten better right like the whole thing was this this this decision the stars made to operate on things was how they decided to go and part of the decision to fire Pete Dbor and everything like that was we have capped out we have reached this plateau right with with what we currently have we have no way of getting from Western Conference plateau to Stanley Cup final that was their internal decision and they I I think it’s one of those things they never want to say publicly but I think they have to there’s a clear It’s not a I don’t know what the right term is for this because it’s not a rebuild it’s not a tear down it’s nothing of that but it is a well we’re intentionally tumbling halfway down the mountain because we need to maybe find that other take another maybe maybe midway up there’s another turn we need to take we got to tumble down a bit and it’s a risky thing and it’s a risky thing and whoever coaches this team next whether it’s right now we we we’ve heard the names that have been out there and circulated to insiders are Glenn Goldson and Neil Graham and it’s the way people are talking i haven’t heard any other names come up so for either of those two it’s a job where you’ve got such a high bar to clear for what this team has done and it’s going to be even more of a challenge because it’s not like you’re given being given the catapult right it’s not like you’re taking over the same team that went to the Western Conference Final there’s a lot that needs to go right for this team and Jaime signing for a million dollars and making it easier on the cap this year that’s good you know what that that works and that’s that’s a step in the right direction but as Lud said Mason Marshman was still a good player before the injury to before his injuries him and Sean and Duchain one of the best lines in hockey to start the year never really got that back going this is a team where it’s the Stars are all of a sudden a Are they a Western Conference contender that’s what I was just gonna say sean there there’s Jamie i’m thinking does Jamie know that wait a second what is he getting 500,000 to get to the finals and 500,000 to wait a second where where’s where’s his where like for I I just I wonder so his his his his um I wonder when because the Taves deal is clearly right there right slightly different like five almost the exact same game plays marks but 550s and and but Taves has the make the playoffs 250 for making the playoffs 250 for winning round one 250 for winning round two i just I I wonder in the negotiation how much Jaime’s Jamie and his agent went to Jim and like can we just get the the Taves deal the round one win the round two win the Yeah we are i think Jamie’s agent and Jamie need to get on Twitter and check up on some of these deals hey Luds can you give me a bing bong please bing bong ken Murphy photography a super chat Jamie Ben and Craig Lewig the captain still has some juice to deliver more importantly his leadership on this team is needed he is one tough mofo he’s channeling his inner Richard Mattachuk there love the guy the we uh the one thing I wanted to to comment on about what Sean was saying is is that I don’t think they took too many steps back it’s just that they they had a bloated in a positive way playoff roster because of what they could do with the deadline and with LTIR but they have been able to pivot in the sense that they added Mo Ranton in at 12 million and they had him at a complete steal at the deadline right then they have Wyatt Johnson’s $8.4 million cap contract beginning and of course the goalender Jake 8.25 million now underway so it’s sort of it’s sort of the uh the morphing of this team as they continue to try to hold on to their homegrown pieces while also trying to maintain what they have i know that doesn’t plate anybody because you’re right there seem to be some holes up front as far as their forward depth without Granlin without Marchman you suddenly feel this lack of things if you can add one more piece up front to your top six presumably a left right now meaning you know clear up money from Dumba maybe something else and then look at something at the deadline are they then closer to where they were at going into the playoffs this past year mean closer you’re saying no look at lies not for me i’m I’m I’m just sitting here wondering last uh whenever whenever they got Mo did they sit in the room and go “All right guys we’re going to empty the clip if we pull this one off this is it we’re emptying the clip right here this is our shot.” Because these these guys are are too good at their job as far as being counters as you say and knowing where exactly they’re at but again you can mention one more guy up front does that mean that we’re cool with what’s going on in the back end right now that’s that’s the question and I think that’s where we had we had the eklad Anderson all those conversations as well that that’s a whole another topic but I’m with you there if they go into the regular season with the team the way it is now it’s going to be a tough as Sean said there’s going to be a lot of challenges along the way to figure out what they need how to get it and if they can even get it and and you talk about them adding like a like you look at like are they going to add a left right let’s and obviously we don’t know for sure maybe male Granland is laughing at us back in Helsinki right now and being like I am going to sign for a million dollars and like like may maybe there’s something there that we don’t apparently Mikuel Granland has now joined the show but if you’re like if you’re looking at a so are you going to bring back a like the free agency pools like does if I tell you you could go get a a Brandon Sad right like your options are like a Brandon Sad um Jeff who by the way I believe he’s staying with Vegas according to Elliot yeah but but I get your point yeah like a Jeff Skinner uh a Victor Olivesson right like I I add one of those guys it’s Stanley Cup right like that’s Yeah there’s there’s a clutch playoff performer with with years of experience in the postseason hey he did score the game-winning goal in game five to end the Stars season yeah I was going to say who was that against yeah what about something that the Stars front office has been pretty good at which is adding veterans at the minimum to kind of round out your roster and I know we’re talking about a hole that’s in the top six or at least I don’t know if you want to call it a hole but an opening in your top six could you see I mean Blackwell hasn’t been resigned right we don’t know if they’re going to do that or not i would think it’s a no-brainer but you have to have the cap space to do it um they also can go find another guy right uh Michael Rafel was a guy they would went out and find a find a pretty cheap deal they brought Blake Como in at a pretty inexpensive deal blackwell was the most recent one you can always go out and find those guys is that worth adding or is that just pieces at the edge it’s not covering this main issue i mean they’re going to add like a Nick Cousins or something like that right like that’s Yeah like I’m just giving you where they’re in the shopping bin range right like that’s the area that’s that’s where they’re shopping right now there’s not a there’s not a Mitch Mner coming in as we talked about yesterday no and and the other thing too about like this the Stars cap hit space where we keep hearing that the Stars believe there’s a market for Matt Dumba and I believe there might be some market for Matt Dumba but until they trade Matt Dumba can someone prove to me that there’s a team that is knocking down the door for Matt Dumba right like I I just there’s this that’s the other kind of thing where like we we put we’re trying to line up these these roster building tools and we assume like okay well they’re going to have the 3 point what 75 is it for for Dumba’s space or whatever like is there actually like if I’m another NHL team if I’m NHL team and I know where the stars are and part of my job is to make every other team worse at the same time I’m trying to make my team better why would I go and help the Dallas Star like why would I help the Dallas Stars and take Matt Dumbo off off off their hands right like that’s the I I’m just I I keep waiting to see where’s this we live in this perfect world this perfect video game world where we could go and where people don’t hold grudges and and and GMs aren’t trying to be nasty to each other but if I’m the other 31 NHL GMs I’m looking at it like all right I can find a Matt Dumba type equivalent for much less and he’s probably that’s probably about a $2 million player so that’s my my take to Jim okay give me the pieces that make it worth my while to take him or retain and all of a sudden you’re not even getting all of that 3.75 like I just I would like to push back on that briefly and say he still is a serviceable right shot defenseman in a league that has a a deficit of that right they there’s always a demand for a a guy that can play and we saw you know Luds we talked about this a lot there were times where he looked okay and there were times where he didn’t and I still think that there will be teams that are desperate for a guy on the right side that that’s not a oh man you got to pay us a King’s ransom just to take him out are there teams desperate on the right side for $3.75 million of Well there are some that have have an absolute embarrassment no but but also it’s the spot of if you’re going to do that like why would you if if you’re a team that you’re in the spot you’re going to have the space to add a player like Matt Dumba um for one you’re probably waiting to see what you do on July one right like you’re waiting to see what type of things things go and every where things go what type of space you actually have because you’re not gonna hamstring your cap space with Matt Dumbo you’re not going to do that that would be very bad GM work and if that’s where you’re going on this and your gym like do you I just I don’t know where where do you see the actual like safety parachute for sure coming like they might that yeah there will be a team that might take him and it might get done but it’s I just I keep struggling to see this certainty that he’s just off clean and the stars are able to get a fifth round pick for it like I just it’s show me it’s going to happen i’m not saying it’s impossible i just I struggle to see the the guarantee of this especially when like if you’re a team right shot defenseman Matt Dumba cost $3.75 million i could go sign John Clingberg for about that much money if I’m any other team i know not the exact same player a little bit different but one of them actually played in the playoffs this year one is they’re both right-handed they both wear a number three just those are the types of the decisions teams will be weighing and I think we just have to add a little dose of realism to this whole Dumba thing of we can’t just believe everything the stars tell us as much as we like to believe it I mean the whole commentary about well Steve Spot still had a job here that got completely that got completely rebuked so let’s let’s let’s add let’s bring let’s dial up the skepticism a little bit to a healthy amount of let’s talk about it that way that’s that’s my one take here on that yeah I think if it was that obvious Sean it would have happened already if it was such an easy decision and deal they would have made that deal already so I’m with you all right we have a show coming up luds you want to put a bow on this Jamie Ben emergency pod anything you’d like to add about the captain or uh did you do nod off during Shawn’s long speech there no I I enjoy listening to Shawn no I do i I think Shawn makes a ton of sense all the time yeah again I I’m happy that Jaime’s back i I really am i I want I want him to have a good season and I want him to be able to the people that probably weren’t really happy about seeing him come back I want him to shut them up and I want them and they would want to be proven wrong too you know I think I don’t think anybody’s not a Jamie Ben fan it was just his performance at certain times is what they’re complaining about you know the other thing I keep thinking about is Tom Gard’s comment about remember when he had said something about we’re this great team in in the regular season and you know we got to get back to being that team in the playoffs and everything that Sean said now the other thing that I said yesterday too Sean and I don’t know if you heard it I said “Can Matt Dumba be different or Lubushkin or Cece whoever all of them can they be different if there was a different system that they were playing?” Maybe could they be a better stay at home don’t have to run all over the place i don’t know you know I have no idea but but again that’s why and we’ll see what the two time GM of the year has got up his sleeve if he’s got anything any sleeves on right now maybe he’s sitting at his house naked he’s got nothing i don’t know there’s a good visual there’s of an image all right that’s perfect way to wrap up our emergency pod just think about the stars front office in their underwear getting ready to fill out the rest of their They’re not wearing underwear according to lent oh Sam you had to go there again we got Commando Castanza over there all right guys thank you very much we have a show at 2:00 Central time we will be on as of now we will talk about Jamie Ben then we will be joined by daily faceoff draft expert Stephen Ellis if we get the news that Sean is teasing about about a head coach we might have to bump Stephen so we’ll have to be on high alert for that and that’ll all go down at 2:00 from the studio we’ve got the captain signing a one-year $1 million extension with a $3 million performance bonus add-on potentially for the 2526 season we have Sean Shapiro we have Craig Ledwig we have Sam Nestler i’m Owen Newkerk thanks for joining us big thank you to our producer Elijah Smith behind the scenes we’ll see you in about 3 hours [Applause] [Music]

  1. Yaaaayy !!! We found a way to keep this BUM. His era is a complete failure…And to think, people actually think this is some incredible deal for Jim Nill…Loser mentality.

  2. Jaime has earned this! No way this hurts the team, I see even fans now look at this from a “what have I done lately” thing as opposed to old fashioned loyalty, sad to read some of these comments 🙁

  3. I'm quickly losing faith in Nill. He's making some stupid decisions lately, and this is one of the worst. This puts the new coach in a horrible position by making the $2 million bonus based on games played and not production. If Benn looks as washed up next season as he did in the playoffs, taking stupid penalties and getting blown by, how can the new coach bench him? He'd be taking away his money! What would that do in the room? Just inexcusably stupid.

  4. We get rid of Marchment but keep Benn? We broke up Seguin, Duchie, and Mason line to keep a dead 4th liner? As a Stars fan, Benn is old guard, we don't owe him a Cup. I don't get it. 😢

  5. This is all they can do to even try to be a contender next year with no cap space and no 1st round picks. This team is running back the same group just less than they had. This is going to be a fringe playoff team at best. Regular season record won't matter. They're going to be on the road if they make it in with a roster less capable than the one before that lost for the 3rd straight time in the WCF.

  6. Dallas fans dont seem to be very happy of this signing.

They thought that his loyalty card was already played.

His salary is small and bonuses big, but what kind of value- added je brings to the team ??

At least he should not be the Captain. He is a 4th line player atm. At max.

Team has already given away Marchment and Granlund is on his way out. They are two solid play off players.

They should get rid of Dumba and Lebouskin asap. Even after that there is not enough spave under Cap Hit.

Unfortunately the team looks weaker than this year. They dont look any more a Cup Contender.

Jim Nill' s fame as smart GM is jeopardised. As good moves he did before.

They need to succeed in selecting the right coach, who can bring some new drive in. Not an easy task . This task can' t fail.
