Hello welcome to Locked On Sharks the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area My name is JD Young caretaker three co-host of Locked On NHL Want to thank you for making Locked on Sharks your first listen Proudly part of the Locked Onet cover your team every day If you want to be an everydayer all you have to do is just follow along wherever you get podcast or you can watch on YouTube as well And today uh it is draft day kids Uh we are here I’m recording this like 10:00 a.m Pacific time Um so just going to kind of get caught up on on what the buzz is at number two We’re going to talk about Mark Everlastic’s buyout new CBA and get caught up on some other news and notes uh with the San Jose Sharks So before we do all that do want to let you guys know today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time Download the Game Time app create an account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase Uh we are live down still live down in LA uh right across the street from uh from the Peacock Theater So where the draft will be held tonight uh or this afternoon Pacific time which is again the best time Um going into tonight I don’t know I’m I’m going to be completely honest I don’t know who the Sharks pick Um right the past couple years you you’ve had a good like last year right you knew the Sharks were going to be picking Mac on Celebrity Year before that had a good feeling the Sharks were going to be picking Will Smith at number four Um I don’t know man Uh I don’t know Um it’s sounds like it’s it’s Fondell Anton Fondell out of out of Sweden Uh where if the Sharks were to go in that direction I think the reasoning behind it is they want to add something a little bit different to the prospect pool uh when it comes to play style kind of that more north south um just kind of straight ahead type of of style that Fondelle definitely brings compared to Michael Misa who’s I would say is a more dynamic player Um does bring some you know more flash but you know with with both these players there’s there’s definitely some uh there’s high upside with both of them I would say Misa has a higher upside and there is some potential you know um floor issues with with them if you know with Misa does his especially on a Sharks team does his game translate and especially if you already have Will Smith and Melbrini can you continue to just add these super high-end picks or super high-end skilled guys and not have uh different styles of play right the old basketball theory right you can’t have just five of the same guys out there You need guys of different heights and different uh abilities etc etc Um I And then there’s also Sam Constantino on um uh 32 thoughts today brought up potentially Porter Martone as a potential uh which I think would be a little bit of a blend of the two if you’re kind of looking you know where Martone does have that kind of nastiness straight ahead um does have an insanely high ceiling Um but you I think you’re gonna have to try to kind of pull out a little bit more of that kind of edge and and with him and a little bit more consistency with him kind of compared to the other ones So you know and and with Fondell right the the kind of argument for him right he’s he’s a guy who’s played in in professional hockey playing with the Hockey Alpenskin has won big-time games as uh you know your Garden uh won the Hockey Alpenskin and got promoted to the SHL He’s going to be playing SHL games next year uh with you know with with your garden But then again with Rondell like you’re you’re playing third line minutes which is fine right especially for a 18 19 year old kid but I think there’s a lot of people who said Ekkan was the better player ekan comma Victor uh was the better player between the two for majority of the season and Fondell has had some some injury issues so you know I I can whatever route my Greers decides to go right and again I’m still on the like I think it should be Michael Misa because I I think uh as I’ve stated before and I will continue to state I I think Michael Misa just such a high-end talent and such an elite player if if he hits his highest of highs and what that would potentially give you down the middle between Celabbrini and and Misa I think it’s hard that’s hard to match up right um and like that that’s what I would do But again as I famously said mo many many times on this podcast I’m a noted idiot Uh what do I know so um but I would I would I’m still hoping Misa but again like if if Greer does go the front like I’m I get it Like I totally get especially after watching the Florida Panthers kind of beat the crap out of teams the past couple you know the past two playoff runs and Fondell if he can be a Barov Jr and then you add that with uh a potential you know with with celebrating who we think is going to be a budding superstar and potential Silky type of player for the Sharks So you know we are projecting and that’s what you’re doing with 17 18 19 year old kids here is you’re projecting But um I I can see the the path and the logic and the reasoning of what’s why you would do it And if Barov Barov if Fondell works out to be a Barov Jr you know five six years from now who cares where you drafted him right like if you got him at second if you got him at four whatever Um yes you would like to maybe trade down and and try to get some more value out of it but uh the especially this year’s draft like everybody’s trying to move around and move up and move like it would be nice to to maybe get the Blackhawks to to bite on a trade even if it’s moving down one and then you maybe get but again are the Blackhawks just well if you’re going to take Fondell why would I trade up to get Misa i can just sit and wait to get Misa So and I think the the Blackhawks would be again can’t run to the podium but uh they would be very quickly turning in the card to draft Michael Misa uh if he’s available for them So um but again like I talking to you know talking to people here in LA um they are you know like this frontell thing has definitely grown over the week Um but it’s still like we don’t know like nobody knows to be like nobody knows what’s going on uh with it and what the sharks are going to be doing here And there is clear like there is logic to do you know you like you can strongly make the case for for Misa which I’ve made the case for Misa on this podcast many many times Um you can make the case for Fondell And again noted idiot I like I would prefer Misa but again it’s not like Fondell is some third line scrub you know uh that you’re drafting Like Fondell has a skill set that the Sharks forward group just doesn’t really have right now And if you’re trying to diversify your bonds as Wuenlan famously said um you can easily make the argument for frontal and especially as a center uh as your potential 2C and that gives you some flexibility with Will Smith if you just want to stick him to Mlin Celabbrini’s wing for the rest of their careers and off you two go and go Yeah Go have fun you two But the Porter Martone like you know I know there’s a a there is a a small segment of passionate marone fans and uh again adding something a little bit different to what the potentially what the Sharks prospect pool just doesn’t have right now Um and that’s that kind of big scoring winger who again like I I like Musty you know I like Shereshaw but Marton’s just kind of a little bit of a different animal uh compared to those those guys And you know Brockton called him you know the hope is that you’re getting a Kachchuck like type of player out of Martone And again we just saw Matthew Kachchuck uh and the Florida Panthers kind of bully their way to two Stanley Cups here And if that’s the if that’s the vision my career has I I can justify the pick Again I’m not saying I would do it but I can justify the pick If if that’s the vision that my career is trying to build is we want to be like the Florida Panthers where uh we’re just tougher smarter and like and everything than you like I I I get it I totally get it So uh but team building is a little bit cyclical right and I’m sure we will see as teams start to you know try to replicate the Florida Panthers model And the Florida Panthers um not all those guys were drafted right bennett Reinhardt like Forsling a lot of those guys Katruck they came through acquisitions of other means whether it’s through trades signings uh waiverwire pickups etc etc There’s there’s multiple ways to build your team Um and I like I don’t think trying to get some of these I I would call like pieces that uh I don’t want to say fit pieces but like pieces where you’re you’re trying to kind of I’m still very much especially at picking two just pick who you think is going to be the best player regardless of fit and you can figure it out later So uh we’re going to be talking about Mark Edward Classic next who uh sad day as Vlastic has officially been bought out by the San Jose Sharks Uh so we’ll get into that Talk about kind of what it means for the Sharks and what it means uh talk about Vastic for a little bit here Um in just one making the lock on Sharks your first listen Of course we will have coverage from the draft tonight Uh we’ll have a uh we’ll get whoever the Sharks draft that to you’ll hear from them Uh if the Sharks use that pick 30 we will hear from them as well Uh you’ll also uh get a reaction from me tonight after the draft and then we’ll be back on Saturday to do it all again Plus uh we have free agency next week as well So make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well Okay Um Mark Edwardic uh the last man standing from the San Jose Sharks uh Stanley Cup run um officially bought out today Uh it is uh it’s a sad day like uh chat I’m actually I throughout this I’ve been I’m thinking of Kyle my former co-host um who loved Mark Edwardic dearly I’m pouring one out for you buddy I’m sure you are hurt uh seeing this but um Vlacic uh was put on waiverss um and then as of this morning cleared waivers So he will be bought out So he had one year left on his deal at uh $7 million a year Of course that eight-year deal that he signed in 2017 uh eight years at 56 million Um because this now that money will be split So the Sharks will pay basically on his um his roster or his money this year will count as uh 4.67 million this year and then next year um it will uh be uh I think it’s like 2 or 1.77 million um the following season in the 2627 season So um so this the Sharks you know they they do open up a little bit of space about $2 million here worth worth of cap space but I think for them the roster spot is more important than the money right because we do know the Sharks still need to spend you know roughly $20 million just to comfortably get to the cap floor And I know a lot of people are on the uh just just trade for carry prices contract and that’ll eat up 10 million of it Uh we we’ve heard from from Greer himself like uh they they want to make this team better and I think for them the roster spot is more important than uh what uh what the the the salary cap implications and they they feel like that they can finagle their way and make their way make it work for them uh here So um as for for Vic um you know it’s a guy who I think under I think was you know especially in his prime is you know considered one of the best defensive defenseman in his uh you know of his generation right um the way he played defense and shut things down and his abil I think Vic’s ability to shut things down opened up opportunities for like Brent Burns and for Dan Boilles and who you know these kind of more offensively again Dan Bole excellent way defenseman But you get what I’m saying where knowing that you could throw Vic out there for 20 25 minutes a night um and he’s going to play you know picture perfectesque defense out there uh allowed these other guys I think to flourish and um you know and I know little a little bit frosty relationship with the median I think as he got older I think that kind of mellowed out a little bit as you would expect Um and he you know was a player who said he wanted to be here um you know after 19 years But um you know unfortunately like we see it all the time with with these great players is it’s just it’s father time’s undefeated right and over the past couple years you definitely saw a a drop off in Vastic’s play and um you know whether that’s again father time uh and all the hard minutes he played earlier in his career and a a roster that has been in turmoil and changed a lot over the past couple you know several seasons with with the Sharks where um you know it’s it’s hard for I think it’s hard for a a guy like Vastic to continually kind of try to to be that same guy right um but I I think though I’m my my classic kind of memories uh you know got to talk to him a couple times but um when he was uh or when Cotor came back last year for that like six game stretch and uh Cotor assisted on a classic goal like you could tell just kind of that brotherhood and that bonding with some of these older guys right where like Cotor and Vic had been together for you know 15 seasons and and like it was a nice little moment moment for those guys I think to kind of have that one last like kind of special moment out there on on the ice uh together and um yeah I I I do think though and again doesn’t get a concussion uh the Sharks don’t get reverse swept and I think they win the cup that year but anyway um I think he will be a player who like you know a guy who’s played his entire career in San Jose and yes not the most ceremonious way to go out and I don’t know if he signs with another team uh maybe he signs a vetmin type of deal to come in and be a six or seven defenseman for somebody um maybe he doesn’t uh maybe he just goes off back to Quebec and and and buys a bajillion dogs and goes live out you know on a big dog ranch or something like that like maybe he does that but I I do think I’m as the Sharks organization continues to you know mature in age and now you know we’ve got a couple numbers retired I think getting that like ring of honor um for for players where again like I don’t I Vassic it’s hard for me to argue for him to potentially have his jersey retired and this is a I know it’s a very fresh wound right now But he is definitely in that like Ring of Honor type of players And if he did get his jersey retired eventually I wouldn’t be surprised as well But I I I’m I’m very much in like the jersey retirement needs to be like icons um in the franchise and as as great as Vastic is I’m yeah I mean you could argue the best defenseman in in Sharks history especially when it comes to defensive defenseman So uh but yeah it’s it’s you know it’s unfortunate that this is kind of the way that it ended I thought he would get that kind of one last run with the Sharks to at least kind of say goodbye you know kind of complete his contract and have that um you know moment of of with with the fans and with the team and with everybody to kind of you know say goodbye and if he retired after next year or whatever he decided to do Um I I kind of thought that would be the plan but I I think my career values the roster spot right now as the Sharks try to make some upgrades on the blue line So uh we’re going to get caught up with some other news and notes talk about the new CBA and some of the kind of fun details that’s that’s actually getting announced like right now as we uh as as we’re talking So uh we’ll get to that here in just one second Ever wish manage your money felt easier with Monarch Money it can Whether you’re growing first listen Uh when you’re done with this episode go check out of course uh Locked On NHL Uh there’s no offseason here especially at locked on continue to bring you daily news uh big stories throughout the NHL that matter most with the local coverage that you love from Locked On Find Locked On YouTube wherever you listen to podcast All right couple news and notes and and stuff here as uh we we kind of wind this bad boy down So the new CBA um is getting kind of uh voted on and stuff It should be believed to be passed They’re literally announcing it right now Of course uh as we know all these details are um already available but kind of some of the big points and stuff from it is there’s going to be a change um from an 84 game 82 game schedule to an 84 game schedule starting in the 26 27 season but the preseason is dropping from four game down to four games Um and then the nice thing is veterans who played over a hundred games can only play in two of those preseason game Like we don’t need preseason games guys Especially with with how much hockey is played Um we can cut down on preseason Like it’s fine It’s fine Um also sounds like the season will start closer to the beginning of October end of September which I’m all for Uh get that bad boy going earlier Um there’s also going to be a big change in the term limits for contracts So um going from right now right if you sign a free agent in uh you can sign them to a maximum seven-year deal If you resign one of your players it’s a maximum of eight years That’s dropping to six and seven So the final year of eight uh final eight-year deals will come this year which is a big thing I I think for some of some teams who maybe they’re young players and hint William Ecklan etc etc where you maybe want to try to get control for a longer period I wonder how many young how many players we maybe see get uh sign these these long-term deals these eight-year deals etc So uh they’re also closing the LTR loophole uh for the playoffs where you have to actually um ice a cap compliant roster which I I’m curious to see what this does for trades at the deadline and stuff But anyway I would also like personally I I wouldn’t mind if it’s like maybe you get like a 10% bump or something like in the summer right can be 10% over the cap during the summer but by like the time the season starts you have to be cap compliant Um and you have to remain cap compliant Maybe maybe it’s like a 5% bump or maybe it’s like a little bump to kind of just give those those playoff teams a little bit more ammunition to do something right But anyway um they’re also teams they’re changing this the how long you can keep rights of players So especially with the new like CHL NHL like with the CHL NHL agreement like if you draft a guy in the CHL um you only actually can’t have their rights for two years This is now going to change until um and then like if you drafted a NCAA kid right you have their rights for four years This is not going to change everyone’s rights until the age of 22 which I I think makes a lot of like just make it easy for everybody right um we’re also getting the deferred salary cap which is good Um changing some of the the bonuses and stuff like that The emergency backup goalies uh each team must now carry a full-time ebug ending the beer league callup era RIP Um it changes some of the dress code stuff Who car like that type of thing um whatever But um I I do think like for for the and oh the last like kind of fun one or I’m calling it the Sam Dickinson rule or the Quint Musty rule where there’s going to be um select players that will be eligible to play in the AHL after you know like kind of skirting that NHL CHL agreement where there’s going to be a select pool of players that will be AHL uh eligible um uh earlier than than expected which I think is a huge huge bonus right sam Dickinson this year like this upcoming year would be a perfect AHL player right um Quinton Musty last year would have been great to see him play a full season in the AHL instead of kind of wasting a year in juniors But um I do think now with the new NCAA rules where you’ll see kind of some changes with that Uh I do expect less ELC’s signed after the draft as players want to have kind of can keep their flexibility and their options open as they continue their development But I do love the AHL kind of rule that’s going to be coming down the pipe pike as well So um other kind of news and notes too Uh we Colleen Costa not expected to get a qualifying offer I don’t think it’s a big surprise Noah Greor also not expected to get a qualifying offer Not a big surprise as well Uh both these players when we did the simulated offseason I I didn’t give the Sharks a qualifying offer to Uh we’ll know more on Sunday which players get qualifying offers and stuff Um again I’m I think you’re going to see a lot of churning of of some of these uh kind of aging out prospects Uh again gut gut feeling is I think Guushing gets one more gets a qualifying offer gets one more season uh with the Sharks Does that mean he ends the season with the Sharks organization who knows uh I don’t think Bordaloo gets a qualifying offer uh like I I think there’s I think we’re going to see a lot of these this kind of turnurning of the roster here so uh going forward but um and again just the qualifying offers basically it says we want to keep your rights and we’re going to negotiate with you you know throughout the offseason and stuff So um and we’ll get those contracts taken care of It just it just kind of means like we we still want to keep these guys If you don’t get a qualifying offer you become a free agent and you’re part of the free agency pool So uh and then it sounds like uh San Jose Barracuda goalie Gabe Kerier is also getting a uh new contract right around I think it was 795 is what Puck Pedia had it Um so which is perfect I think for a guy who to kind of come in compete for the the you kind of fourth or fifth goalie in the organization Uh I liked what I saw from K last year I know there needs to be a little bit more consistency there but I think there is some highlevel play in him Um and I I just I think it’s a guy you want to kind of just keep around and let him continue to develop And I think he’ll should earn a chance to get more Barracuda games this year And um if not he can also play in the ECL as well where he played very very well down there So um yeah I’m I’m very happy with that So yeah that’s going to be it for now We’ll be back later tonight after the first round Uh we will uh break down what the Sharks do in round one of the the draft So make sure you follow along wherever you get podcast And of course you can watch on YouTube as well Follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at Lockdown Sharks Follow me on Twitter and Blue Sky Fryhole Uh till later tonight Bye friends

Montreal has the honorable wall in upper bowl
Martone is projected to fall a bit, so you can take him further than 3 for sure, so a trade is more likely for him and can get more asset. And honestly, I'd feel better with Martone than Frondell personally, even if there's more to work with Martone (especially speed and unlocking him). I'm still on the Misa train, but I personally feel Misa > Martone > Frondell personally. Heck, even V.Eklund I could digest for the type of player we don't have, good story with the brother. I just hope if we don't take Misa, to trade down
Montreal got Dobson, so that means they get Shaeffer. They also got 2X 1sts for the deal and will pick mid range and scoop up more D
Congrats to the Blackhawks! They're getting a helluva player in Misa.
Yo, make your bed…….
We want Frondell
Yes!!!!
I’ve been saying we need a ring of honor! Pavelski, Nabby, couture, Nolan, Vlasic Burns, etc should be in a ring, not retired jerseys
sharks management so stupid
Make sure to drink plenty of water, JD
Finally!!! I agree that they lean Misa from what all the rumors are saying. I will be very happy with that. My biggest point of interest is the 30th pick. Will they move up to get a prospect like Fiddler? I hope so.
Like many have said, with the Dobson trade Schaefer is 100% an Isles prospect.
We should trade eklund to buffalo for byram and 9 and draft mrkta
Misa or we riot.
99.9% Misa
JD, I appreciate your tribute to Pickles. He was a core piece of that long playoff stretch. And if Defense truly is for nerds, then Pick;les was the nerdiest….Only great memories of #44 for this fan…….
Vlasic being bought out also means he can sign with someone else and make another go of it. It's a win/win. Vlasic can still play and skate, but he's not what he once was. He can take a league minimum deal and play 1 season in Florida or Toronto or Tampa or Carolina or Vegas, wherever, and be a locker room presence and veteran. Sad to see the end of an era, but excited about the next one on the horizon.
I'm excited the 2nd pick. Frondell brings size and he also played against men in Sweden. I liked that Misa played with Igor. I would be happy with either or
Frondell a beast! Misa soft!
The argument to not take misa because he’s a center is stupid
Just take Misa. Dont trade out, just take him
How many preseason games were there in the prior CBA? 🤔
JD just rolled out of bed! 😆
I don’t think the sharks try to replicate the panthers model. I think you take Misa and you build your own style team.
Frondell bots are crazy up in here
Sharks should just take the best player. Once you see what you have in assets a year or two from now, they can trade for a top defenseman with maximun value trade capital.
huge dobson trade confirms the Isles take Schaefer
