it’s time to shoot up see you Mondays and Fridays 8 to 10 on over the air WHKY channel 14.2 time for your look at local sports from across the Hickory Metro i’m Jason Savage for WHKY News the Bass North Carolina State qualifier was held a week ago today on Lake James with anglers from UNC Charlotte Lenol Rin Bethl University Erskin College North Carolina State and Kataba Valley Community College participating in the tournament the Kataba Valley Community College Redhawk team of Hunter Keller and West Smith won the event with the heaviest limit weighing in at 15.04 pounds by winning the tournament Keller and Smith qualify to fish the Bass College National Championship on Cherokee Lake near Jefferson City Tennessee with Keller and Smith qualifying four Red Hawk teams have now qualified for the Bass College National Championship previous qualifiers were Hunter Barrow and Canton Troll who won the Virginia State qualifier Garrett Christie and Corbin Chenvi who qualified at Lake Chikamonga in Dayton Tennessee and Kate Mackey and Jacob Webb who qualified at the Harris chain of lakes in Leburg Florida now the Bass College National Championship will be held on Cherokee Lake in Jefferson City Tennessee July 10th through the 12th the four Redhawk teams will compete in the college bracket tournament with the winner of the tournament securing a spot in the Bassmaster Classic lenor Ry News now lenor Rin’s Alexis Brown named the NCAA Division 2 Athlete of the Year as announced by the Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards presented by Honda brown will be recognized alongside the class of 2025 Honda Sports Award winners with a live telecast coming up Monday at 700 p.m on CBS Sports Network in New York City the fastest woman in NCAA Division 2 history Brown was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division 2 National Track Athlete of the Year for both the indoor and outdoor seasons winning the outdoor 100 and 200 meter titles and the indoor 200 meter title she set new NCAA Division 2 records in all three events running 10.93 seconds in the 100 22.35 in the outdoor 200 and 22.88 in the indoor 200 at the time of her 100 meter championship Brown had run the second fastest time in the world in that event she’s won eight NCAA Division 2 National Championships and is a 14 time all-American she’s run the 10 fastest win legal 100 meter times in division 2 history the three fastest indoor 200 meter times three of the five fastest outdoor 200 meter times and two of the four fastest 60 meter times and again just recently signed an NIL deal transferring to South Carolina appalachin State men’s basketball forward CJ Huntley has signed a two-way contract with the Phoenix Suns following the conclusion of the 2025 NBA draft last night a two-way contract allows players to be active for their NBA clubs in 50 regular season games up to 50 but they can play for their team’s G-League affiliate club now over his 5-year career with Appalachin State Huntley was a part of three postseason appearances which included a birth in the 2021 NCAA tournament app’s 96 wins during his career makes him the second most winningest player in program history the Hickory Crowads won on the road against the Salem Red Sox last night 7 to2 in the top of the first inning hickory would score three runs and then after a 58minute rain delay that did not slow the Croads offense down because in the fourth inning the Dads would push two more runs across hector Asorio two for three batting with a triple a walk four RBI and a stolen base the win improves Hickory to 38 and 33 overall 5-1 on the second half of the season they’ll remain in Salem over the weekend they’ll have Monday off and then they’ll take on Canapapolis starting Tuesday with the first three games of the series at the Cannonballers but the series will end with three games at home against Canapapolis starting Friday July 4th at LP France Stadium hickory Met Speedway will be celebrating their 75th year of racing tomorrow night racing action will include the late models the Limiteds the Super Trucks the Street Stocks all will be in action tomorrow night at Hickory Motor Speedway for the 75th birthday bash and coming up tomorrow night on WHKY talk radio 1290 a.m 102.3 FM and online at WHKY.com it’s racing in Atlanta the Echo Park Speedway the Quaker State 400 coming up tomorrow night again on WHKY Radio as always we’ll keep you updated all weekend long at whky.com
