what’s up everybody happy free agency we’re here we did it now let’s see what happens oh man it’s uh I don’t even know where to start Kyle i think look we’re it’s officially 6:01 p.m eastern i believe it’s 8:00 for me here on Tuesday morning but uh Kyle I guess let’s just get straight into it i’m going to hand it over to you for a couple of minutes just to set the scene for just briefly the Pistons cap situation they’re in right now uh and just maybe the types of moves they can potentially make just a brief summary for those just to get everyone updated with what we might be uh in for in the next hour or two yeah for sure so um what we’re looking at now is where it currently stands the Pistons can either renounce all their free agents including Beasley um THJ and uh Dennis Shreder are the big names but it would also include Lindy Waters Paul Reed um so if they renounce all of their cap holds they can get to about 16.9 million in cap room um the reason why it’s not a little higher I know some people if you’re looking at the numbers is because there’s a thing called incomplete roster charges and so any for every for every player under 12 players that you have they they put a$1.2 million$1.3 million hold on your books so when you sign someone that goes away and it kind of balances out but that’s just a it’s a minor really annoying thing that happens so 16.9 million is the starting point um if they without salary dumping anybody else the other option is they have they do have those cap holds they have they they can operate as an over-thecap team which would mean they have their byanual exception which is $5 million exception that they can use um which is the lesser known um most people maybe don’t realize that but they also have the non- taxpayer mid-level which is 14.1 million and so um they cannot aggregate those things but those are those are some trade exceptions they can use to to bring guys in um or sign them as free agents with those with that amount Um and then they also have guys like Dennis Rutder they can sign and trade some of these guys to bring in bigger salary players if they want to so as an above the captain team they have lots of flexibility um and then sorry one more thing I forgot to mention if they go under the cap they have an $8 million I think it’s $8.7 million room exception that they can also use in a trade or to sign a player after they’ve spent their salary cap so lots of flexibility no I love it and that that’s why you’re the man Kyle to break that all down and uh for everyone in the chat if you have any questions um for Kyle probably more so than myself um shoot them in the chat and we’ll go through them i just want to quickly set the scene for the show today so obviously we’ll be we’ve got some uh players to talk about but uh this will very much be a show reacting to any news that comes through so uh we’ve got our eyes on what’s going on i’ve got Tweet Deck going over here so uh we’re going to react to everything um and this is going to be a relaxed show so um if you have anything you want us to talk about shoot it into the chat but we’re going to go here for an hour hour and a half maybe two hours we’ll see how we’re tracking um but um so Kyle you set the scene for us um maybe let’s just I know everyone’s excited about potentially the new players we could add i think it’s worthwhile just quickly checking in on a couple of the guys uh that the Pistons could resign in Tim Hardway Jr Dennis Shoda and I guess Malik Beasley um it sounds like Dennis Schro is probably going to head to the Kings i don’t know if that’s been confirmed but it sounds like
just said they arranging a meeting yeah now that’s again they’re arranging meetings with Schroeder and Westbrook so um but yeah uh Sher to the Kings has been a lot of smoke on that last couple days
so I think I saw somewhere Shod was around two years was it around 30 million i think I saw in one of Mark Stein’s articles
so as you were saying the Pistons could offer him up to 22 million annually but that’s just not a situation so do you think we Dennis showed us he’s he’s pretty much gone I feel like at this point yeah um I think that’s probably more likely to because the Pistons weren’t that high on bringing him back um that’s how I read the the YouTube or like the Instagram thing was him saying “I want to be here but I’m waiting on them to even offer me anything.” Um and he knows he can’t wait for them probably if there’s if he’s got an offer up out there especially if the Kings are offering him substantial role um then that makes sense for him and to get his money now now with Beasley no longer being in the mix maybe that changes things but you have to remember Traan was completely comfortable going into last off season without a backup ball handler and they had plenty of ways to make that happen um they didn’t even really use their room exception last year so I think we see the same thing especially now with Assar even being more prominent with Ron they want to probably get him some on ball reps potentially you know like those are things where I think they’ll probably go into the season just like they did before have Cade be the primary let Ivy have room on the bench to be the featured ball handler and scorer and if they need to bring a guy with a minimum or the bianual or just at the trade deadline go make a move um I think they’re completely comfortable with that yeah it’s I I’m with I think so as well and it’s a good point that you raised about last offseason and I think uh I read somewhere once again in one of Mark Stein’s articles that the Pistons still are looking to put reps into Ivy as that in that backup point guard role not obviously he’s still a starter but filling that backup role uh when Kate’s off the floor um maybe let’s let’s jump to Tim Hardway Jr quickly i have not heard or seen much about him at all with the Pistons or any other team obviously in light of the Malik Beasley situation after thinking maybe Tim was not very high on the list to bring back at least just for my gut feel I now kind of feel like I would like to see him back as a Piston do you have like any idea what what his contract could look like or what an ideal contract for him could look like um for Tim if I if I set it up in a way like they can still go sign an Aquil Alexander Walker but they bring in THJ what would that deal look like
if they’re bringing THJ back on anything more than like a minimum then it’s probably they’re an over the cap team
um okay because they have that cap hold for him and I think that’s way better option i think part of the reason why I haven’t seen a lot of THJ chatter is because he’s probably second or third wave in terms of free agency because Beasley because um guys like Larabia and Nquil Alexander Walker there is a handful of guys that probably were higher on the list um in terms of being available and the Pistons can pay him so much more than anyone else can if they want to um and so I think that’s partly why there’s not a lot of THJ chatter because it’s probably going to be one of those things where it was just uh he’s going to wait out and see what the market is now that Beasley’s basically off the table again I think the Pistons should I think the Pistons should sign him to a minimum deal and keep his early bird rights and kick the can down cuz
Rosier took seven months and he still got to play and he came out they found him not guilty so was that just announced today for Rosier yes yeah it was just announced earlier a couple hours ago so
all that being said so that’s just a slight tangent but I think Beastley could still end up in the building
um and I think No I like So let’s just touch on the bees situation you did an episode with coup last night everyone locked on Pistons i’m sure everyone’s gone and watched that i’ll be honest I just didn’t have a chance with the time zone and then this straight away this morning but can you just uh I’m sure you spoke about the Beasley uh suspension well he’s not suspended innocent till proven guilty but can you just talk us through maybe what that looks like for the Pistons let’s say it’s going to take seven to 12 months for that situation to play out um I guess from my standpoint my quick thoughts are the issue is Malik doesn’t have a contract right now that’s why he’s not going to be playing probably because it would be unwise for a team to offer him a deal is that how the situation looks until there’s a verdict or am I
People are saying that people are saying that I don’t there’s no like I don’t think there’s any bylaws there’s nothing that’s like they can’t sign him now is it wise probably not and maybe you don’t play him i don’t know it’s not like if Rosier was like when Jonte Porter was found guilty they didn’t have to like forfeit games this isn’t this isn’t college football so like yeah you know it’s it’s one of those things where it’s just if all he’s if you give him if you sign him for a minimum all he’s doing is taking up a roster spot
you know what I mean
and they didn’t even necessarily have all 15 roster spots filled like teams don’t do that all the time so as long as you’re above as long as you’re above 13 you’re in compliance I guess is what I’m saying and so I think that’s where yes it’s like a PR thing where it’s like do we really want to sign Beasley to a contract knowing that he might have bet on games like maybe maybe not but it also sounds like it was only one game maybe back in 23 24 and so all that being said um I don’t know much like I don’t know the ins and outs legally but most likely the the things are he’s going to probably be found innocent and be fine or he’ll be found guilty and be a lifetime ban like that there’s not really much in between i don’t I don’t think um
but I don’t know for sure
no you’ve laid it out really well there so I guess from like so the Pistons this the a situation that could play out is the Pistons go Malik we still are invested in you say we they think he’s innocent or whatever they go but because of what’s to play out we’re not going to invest anything major in you we’re going to give you a one-year deal let this play out um and then we can reopen contract negotiations next summer that’s a real thing where he could it sounds like play and then they look into that deal again next summer and he Yeah you kick it for sure i think they could totally do now it sounds like Trajan might be pivoting like they’re connected to all these guys and I can’t tell if that’s like aggregators and insiders just connecting dots and agents trying to put things out there to create leverage like there’s all kinds of reasons why that stuff can come out and I don’t think they’re going to do a Beasley deal until like right before the season starts so give it some time but it benefits Beasley too like you’re getting you’re getting $2 million as a you know minimum and it lets the Pistons keep his bird rights his early bird rights for next summer so he could sign
a like a four-year like I forget i just I sent it out earlier i think it’s 56 something it’s I think it’s 149 gear

for everyone as well i’ve got it down the bottom there but please if you want anything to do with the Pistons cap fake like fake trades actually set like please go follow Kyle Kyle Mets23 on Twitter it’s I’m I’m on your P this time of the year i’ve spend that much time on your page well I appreciate that i hope it’s helpful that’s that’s what I tried yeah four years 56 million they can so if they keep his early bird rights they can sign to a 4year $56 million deal
um and that would start at 12.5 million roughly it’s based on the like league average salary of the previous year so it’s that’s an estimate um but they can sign him for 105% of the league average um if they keep his early bird rights and that’s what would signing him to a minimum deal would let him would let him it would protect him right it gives him a chance to sign for a long-term deal till he gets something now the Pistons would be saying “Hey we’re going to stand by you in this like if you if it comes out you’re proving you know innocent we’re going to keep your ability to make money long term without having to go out and get a new thing.” I think it could be a real win if they do that and I think the potential PR fallout would be minimal because you could spin it so much like a hey like we don’t know so we’re going to stand by him and without losing your flexibility because they can still go sign Nquil Alexander Walker they can bring back Tim Harder where they can go get a you know a Duncan Robinson
um and then do stuff later um and so I think that’s kind of where I would that’s how I would handle that situation if it were me but I don’t know also all the ins and outs of that so
yeah it’s It’s definitely just a Yeah we could I I could talk about this a bit longer because the timing of everything and that was strange but like it’s just I think I think we fit it pretty well um someone just had a quick question here uh Lachlan just wants to know could you explain what bird rights are um just for those that might not know
yeah for sure um so and then I’ll segue back to answering your THJ question because I think there’s one or two things that worth hitting on um so basically bird rights exist so that teams can um teams that have had a player for a certain amount of time can pay them more and pay them over the cap to keep them
um we won’t go into why it’s called it’s a Larry the Larry Bird rule you know but it’s it’s a thing right so it basically lets teams go over the cap to sign their players and so basically how it works is if you had a player for one year only one year so that’s what Beasley signed is a one-year deal you have what’s called non bird rights which is a silly name but you have non-bird rights which still actually allows you to sign them over the cap for what it’s worth it’s just a very small amount um and I think it’s like it’s like 5% you can give them a 5% raise or something like that um and I’m sorry I’m butchering right now because I’m it’s not on the top of my head um I have to look it up so when I do it I have to because there’s a bunch of stipulations and weirdness to it but so Nonberg rights is you can give him a small raise over the cap but you’re limited to how many years and how much the raises are it’s kind of like signing him as a free agent but you can do it over the cap um Oh did we get a Jiren Jackson extension
let’s let’s pause there let’s look into that so I’m just adding it to the ticker right now but five years 240 million
okay so that’s a renegotiate and extend so that means that they had to create more cap room to get him so that probably means another deal is happening um or has happened already with some with Aldama or somebody else
um
well let’s see there’s been a lot of questions about Santi coming through which we’ll get to in a moment
yeah so we’ll keep an eye on this um player option okay yeah yeah so it’s a renegotiation and extension so for people what that means is basically and this goes back to the bird rights thing so when you have bird rights there it allows you to sign players based on their previous contract and so in in Jiren’s example you can only give us like a certain amount raise it’s like 30% i think they just they recently upped it in the new CBA i think maybe it’s 40% now um off of the previous salary so because he had that declining deal he was only getting paid $23 million this year memphis had to find a way to create cap room to to give him more money this year so that they could extend him at a number that he actually want and so that’s where like the declining the declining um contracts everyone loves them but then if they’re actually turn out really good it can be really hard to extend a player so you either have to let them hit free agency or you have to create cap room to get up there they’ve people have done this pacers did this miles Turner um so it’s it’s kind of an interesting mechanism that teams use but I don’t remember what Memphis’s cap situation looked like right before this but I don’t think they had quite made enough room to do this previously and so um so we’ll see what happens

that’s very interesting well um was there something you just wanted to add on THJ and then we’ll get into all the the new names and some questions yeah that’s great um yeah so second if you have a player for two years you get early bird rights which is which allows you to do like 175% of a player’s salary or 105% of the um previous sal or the league average salary with 8% raises so that’s another benefit of the bird rice you can give them more raises versus if you’re signing a free agent you can only give them a maximum of 5% raises year-over-year um and then full bird rises once you’ve had a player for three years so the Pistons have full bird rights on THJ which means they can sign him over the cap for as much as his maxes with the max ext with the max raises um and so they can also use him as a trade exception or kind of they can sign and trade him to another team to bring back $27 million in salary roughly and so so that’s a potential for THJ this off season just quickly on the TSA if they were to resign him does it make sense to wait until you’ve done other deals and leave it
it doesn’t really matter they stay over the cap it doesn’t matter um

this Pistons Turkey shout out pistons have to wait i think they need to sign Kyle free agency might be shaking i’ll take a vet and get waved right away that’s fine i’ll take a cool $2 million um but go ahead
sorry to cut you off aldama has agreed to a threeyear $52 million deal to return to the Grizzlies so Pistons fans that is uh probably some unfortunate news that was I was we’re going to chat about him very shortly and he was the name I was kind of hopeful for considering Nikil Alexander Walker seems to be going to the Hawks but uh yeah I’m going to add this to the ticker but Kyle any thoughts three years 52.5 million to return to the Grizzlies yeah that I mean that seems about the right number um I was definitely projecting the Pistons would have to be around 18 to 20 to pry him away um per year um yeah and I mean again I’m trying to There must be other moves um to to get enough cap room i think there they probably have to have be dumping somebody um to get that but this was always kind of the the most likely scenario um was that he stays and they because I like that pairing especially with Edy going out and being injured like it doesn’t surprise me that they didn’t trade their sevenfooters that No that is a great point um because I think he’s out for at least the first couple of months of the season it sounds like with a foot in I think it was a foot injury or something so that’s a really good point that’s probably an injury that does shift things a little bit for them um so ah
yeah and I think I think I think Aldama like the only way Aldama was leaving is if he wanted to leave you know what I mean like he could have left they have restricted free agent so they don’t have like he was a little bit limited um but this isn’t entirely surprising sad i wanted him badly but
it is it is sad i mean the the more recent so the Pistons were obviously always linked to him in the sense of like they’re looking for a stretch big and they among like a few teams but the more recent stuff that I read signaled like that Alama was more likely staying than going so
I’m not surprised i’m I’m more so probably yeah just sad because I was I had I still like restricted free agency i’ll be honest like you never truly do believe it’s going to happen because of it but I I was hopeful i was hopeful so that’s a big name I know for a lot of Pistons fans i haven’t checked the chat yet but I can probably already tell people are going to be pretty upset or angry um but can you even recall the last time we saw a restricted free agent change teams like a first round pick santi was
not off the top of my head not off the top of my head no um and usually it was the team signs them and then trades him
um which I guess technically this still could be the could be the thing
um it’s not over right technically this would be a a sign and trade
um that hasn’t been announced yet
um because people are scared of looking like tampering um and I will say this number what was it it was was it three

okay let me double check this real quick okay so technically just for what it’s worth this number does work with a tech signin trade going out so still fits in that max amount that they can create if like
so it could technically still be a sign and trade
so Pistons next I can see is in the chat here he actually commented on Twitter he wanted us to talk about how that tech uh contract can work in a trade let’s just use this Santiama deal as a potential sign and trade how would that work um okay sorry i’m just checking keeping up to get on my notifications um yeah so how that would work um okay this is Okay this is fascinating okay so I’ll try to I’ll start with tech but I’ll get into why this I’m going to get myself excited for no reason is really what’s about to happen um so Tech makes $8.3 million next year and because there again whenever you do trade one of the ways you can do some salary matching is this year the number actually increased um to um sorry my brain the number actually increases now with the cap so it used to it used to be you could add $7.5 million to between se if you’re sending out $7.5 million to $19 million in salary you can add $7.5 million to that and bring that much money back this year it actually started increasing with the percentage of the cap so now it’s like 8.5 instead of 7.5 so that means by sending out tech alone you can bring back about $16.8 million in salary for this year and so they could in theory in an Aldama situation dump tech to another team um like the Nets or into someone’s trade you know exception whatever and then bring in in a signin trade bring in Aldama at 16.8 $.8 million this year which is actually would be a three-year $53 million contract so it’s again we’re just under that number um and that would be and that would be enough to satisfy the salary matching rules and then what that would do is actually create $11 million which is exactly almost exactly what the the Grizzlies need to extend Jiren Jackson because they need it they still need to cut $10 million in cap and that needs to happen before these other things happen and so they will but if it’s a if it Aldom is actually going out in a trade that would actually satisfy that so they can extend him if they’re not taking money back in um
so Trevor so Keith Smith just on the back of what you’re talking about um as well this is back to Memphis a little bit but Trevor says Keith Smith was reporting that 80 million will need to be clear from the Grizzlies to give them space to give Jiren his contract so
assuming that’s that’s because they’re assuming um Aldama Aldama getting signed if like right now Aldama hasn’t been signed yet so it’s really only 10 because he’s got a cap because Aldama has a capold for 11 million right now
and so how he’s getting that number is we’re he’s getting a $7 million raise and so they need to do all this thing so essentially as long as from my understanding as long as they send out $10 million in cap room then they can sign they can extend and sign JJ and then they can over the cap sign Aldama um so unless again they unless they sign and trade him then he sends him out cap hold goes away now you’re back under by 10 million then you can give Jiren his extension it’s probably not going to be that and I’m getting myself excited for no reason but that’s actually the exact number that the Pistons could could bring him in at um if they send out tech in a deal got you okay this Thank Thank goodness you’re on the show with me because this is all this is this stuff is insane just quickly very quick aside when did you first start learning the cap what what’s NBA season do you remember
it’s a great question how long has it taken you to get to this point where like I can just throw some random bit of info at you and you’re like you just know the cap holds and you’re just cooking yeah i think maybe 2015 16 season was the first time I started doing the like cuz Detroit Bad Boys would do that like mock off season in the comments thing they’d have like a fan post with a Mac off season and I would start playing around with that and realize half the things I was trying to do weren’t legal um or didn’t really have a chance to do and so that definitely started it um man that’s a really good question i don’t remember maybe someone else knows who’s been following me for some time when did I actually start tweeting out stuff about the salary cap i honestly it’s probably only a couple years when I really started um I guess it been right before we started home court probably too like it was probably maybe the season before that

no no I was just going to say I was expecting it was a bit longer but I guess that that was like three or four years ago now it was 2022 I think um okay let’s jump back into it so Adama it feels like it’s a very very slim chance he’s signed and traded to the Pistons um yeah it’s still possible right now but it’s slim yeah
so just on that I’m seeing a little bit of stuff on Twitter um just people saying “Why didn’t Traan make them match a bigger offer sheet?” Uh essentially implying that that’s bad bad like bad from Traan and the Pistons finals not to do that i’m assuming there might be a reason for that well yeah so there’s a few reasons one it seems like it didn’t even get to that point um right Alama if Aldama signed rather quickly um so so that’s one thing secondly most of the time teams don’t really even submit an offer sheet at this point if you want the guy you you say this you call the team say “This is what we want to pay him let’s make this a sign and trade everyone wins um because if you were to offer an offer sheet the clock on those don’t even start until July 6th but your money gets held there like you can’t spend that money
and so if they were to offer him offer him and and they could only offer him the the non- tax MLE right they they can’t even if they would have cleared all their space they could have offered them 16.9 million this year which is basically maybe three or four million more dollars at the end over those three years so that’s why typically it turns into a signing trade because then you’re not having your money locked up for eight days because then they still have 24 or 40 they have 24 hours to to reply and to match um and so
yeah and a player Pistons X said this and I I was about to say “Yeah Pist and the players have to actually agree to this to the offer sheet you know.” So like
Yeah and then once you’ve once they’ve accepted the offer sheet that team cannot trade for him for a year like if they if it gets accepted and matched and so there’s a lot of rules against that so if they really want to go to Detroit say “Hey I really want to go to Detroit can we make this work?” work and then the Pistons give them how many second round picks it takes to work um got you
so that’s kind of that’s the that’s good
that’s the why
no no thank Thank you for that uh so uh another deal uh Dorian Finny Smith has agreed to a 4-year $53 million deal with the Rockets so um
so they got the non too much of a surprise
is that the non tax
that’s the non- tax yep yeah that was that’s been they’ve been rumor rumoring that that smoke there’s been smoke on that all day today and then the last couple days wow the Rockets i’m glad glad they’re in the West they are let’s So they’ve just got KD they’ve got Man they got Dorian Smith then their young guys yeah they’ve uh they probably had the best off season so far haven’t they would you say

the value that they’ve had they created for the things they need for sure yeah

across two years so that’s what’s the minimum minimum’s like two and a half for him so it’s a slight it’s it’s above the minimum wow okay sorry excuse me i’m trying to order my dinner real quick

this I’ll just quickly give my thoughts i’m a little bit surprised because and feel free to jump in and anyone tell me if I’m completely wrong but this kind of signals that he’s back as the third big so the Pistons I mean I guess it doesn’t rule out another stretch big at all but like you said they’ve gone above the minimum to bring him back they’ve given him a raise of sorts uh so I’m kind of surprised i I I I liked what Ball brought to the court but I think it’s more about the lack of size the Pistons had that kind of is a bit of a concern for me in bringing him back because now I feel like our front court is still very undized and if we have an injury um look Paul’s a solid player i’m not I’m not it’s not so much about his skill set it’s more about like just the size and I guess yeah I guess the skill set a little bit because he isn’t a stretch big either um I’m a little bit surprised by this i’m a little bit surprised that uh they’re
bringing him back even though it’s not because I think he was poor like I I I enjoyed him last season yeah for sure and it looks like so I’m trying to figure out now a little bit um how they did this um I’m trying to figure out if they can with his non bird rights if they could um I’m sorry I’m just I’m moving my mic so I can use my hands better so let me know if there’s any audio issues but we should be we should be okay here we still all good yeah it might be a little quieter than it was before but um sorry this is great this is great TV guys i’m sorry um
No no that’s good um I’m just going to see what the chat Paul Reed let’s go paul Reed 5.5 okay it seems like the chats chat’s not too bad with this um sorry Kyle you might have said it but I was doing all over the shop what would the minimum be annually um so the minimum minimum for him was um where is this i need to make my Here we go um I think the minimum for him is like 2.3 million and so what I’m trying to figure out um is did they use his nonbird rights oh no they would have full bird rights for him because they traded for him from the 76ers um

how does that affect okay because I think the next question everyone’s going to have is how much cap space do they have left now does this affect that 16 to 17 million they had
it well yes it would basically mean if they use the if they use the um the bianual exception they can’t use cap room they are staying over the cap otherwise this would directly come out of their cap room which would be then putting them down to like 11 something okay so does that mean how much would they have now to offer some of these other names namely Alexander Walker and Carous the same as they did before because they were either going to use the non- taxpayer MLE or they were going to use a sign and trade with another player
okay gotcha and uh Amari Sanca great pest can saying that second year is non-g guaranteed great yeah that makes sense
so that means
and the reason why the banual exception has to be a two-year deal too so that’s why I’m suspecting it is like it it can’t be more than two years so I’m suspecting this is indeed the banual exception okay yeah cool just gonna try and move this mic just bear with me yeah all right hopefully that’s okay um okay this is not the first deal I was expecting um I will say I am slight ever so the tiniest bit um I don’t know what the word is but Nikil Alexander Walker let’s maybe talk about him for a minute because he still hasn’t been signed by the Hawks and it feels like he was that that was the landing spot um what what kind of deal do you think what would a deal look like for the Pistons to sign Alexander Walker um Lewis here asked this very early on in the show yeah that’s a great question um so for Nquil Alexander Walker it kind of depends it seems like there’s a few there’s a few things at play the Hawks have like a they have I think it’s $23 million trade exception maybe 25 um
yeah so that basically means that they can sign him for the first year starting at $23 million and take him right off the the Timberwolves hands in a signing trade and maybe send back some picks um whereas the Pistons can only do that with 14.1 million just in terms of like the straight up we can sign him with using our exception and then it wouldn’t even be a sign and trade it could just be we can just sign him outright with this um whereas the Hawks can’t do that um however um because we talked about that before like the signing trade with tech they can get they can get up to like 16.8 million for example if they send out Shruder to the Kings with for the for that non-t taxpayer number at 14.1 million they can bring back they can sign him to up to about $22.8 million contract so roughly the same as what Atlanta can do it’s just a little more tricky because then Schroeder has to be okay with it the Kings have to be okay with it and yeah NAW needs to be okay with it so those are trickier but functionally the Pistons can get to the same number whatever the Hawks can do it’s just harder for them to do that
or I would say it’s more complicated not harder complicated
um so with all that being said I think the the the Timberwolves really aren’t going to pay him anything so it’s it’s really just a matter of beating the Hawks number or giving him a better role right so that’s a thing where it’s like “Hey we can only give you 20 million or we only want to give you 20 million but we can offer you 30 minutes a night and be the functional six-man or starter depending on what we do with Ivy.”
Um so like so that’s kind of where I don’t know what that number is i would be hesitant to pay him more than $20 million a year i don’t think he’s shown that he is
I don’t think he’s shown that yet um and I would and I I guess the question I have and we I talked about this last night with Q and maybe offline with some other people is I like Nil Alexander Walker but are you bringing him in to start and if you’re not like does he really help you coming off the bench as your sixth man with you know Ron and THJ presumably now rather than Beasley because you’re probably bringing back THJ for something
yeah just to have more shooting um so I think that’s the question starts yeah you’re right that so there is a lot of overlap because I don’t think any of I don’t want to start playing the four i don’t I think that actually like you lose some what if he brings defensively ron I don’t think can play the four none of those guys can play the four so you pretty much have like you said Kade Ivy Alexander Walker Ron Assar and THJ/Basley all filling those minutes from one to three and I just think I think I tweeted out you could do it but it’s it does get really tricky and because it comes back to how if you’re investing that much in Alexander Walker you want him I’m okay with paying him $18 million to come off the bench i think that’s actually fine for a really good role player but you want it with that type of salary
you’re going to want 25 plus minutes I would feel like and that’s where it gets a bit cluttered but um yeah I look still I still like want them to sign him it just it it does like you said leave other questions like the Ivy thing does is still a question even though I don’t think it means they would trade him or anything it’s just Yeah it is a little bit crowded yeah I think that’s where like even people asking like why are we talking about Nikquil Alexander Walker starting we’re talking about free agency and we’re talking about paying a guy big money now again 20 million is is the new is the new 15 right like we have to start thinking percentage of the cap 20 million is not a ton um but then you’re but then it’s a conversation about minutes right and and we’re already talking about Cade and Ivy and then Assar sometimes will get some minutes of the two ron could also be a two three like and if you’re bringing back THJ um you’re starting to talk about well is a guy going to want to sign here because he has to he has to want to come here in free agency so it’s like you’re gonna you have to have something to offer to him yes you can offer him $20 million but most guys maybe will take $20 million to play 15 minutes a night but that’s just that’s probably not very good business um like for him or for the team
and so I think that’s where the conversation goes well what where does he fit and part of the reason why we’re talking about starting is because like he’s not a he’s not a point guard and so if you’re going to bring him in as the backup too does he give you enough shooting to warrant that with the lineup in the way we’ve seen them use THJ and Beasley
um yeah so I think that’s where some of the conversation starts to happen because Ivy remember Ivy sat the last 30 like only played the first 30 games but and that was before Asar
and THJ started next to Ivy at the three which was crazy but Assar is not losing his starting position to THJ anymore
and if Ivy’s starting then the question is do we have enough shooting in the the starting lineup and then what do we do with the bench so that’s where the that’s I think and I think I
figured out but
yeah and I think I probably I know when I reacted to the news and I like I don’t think I’ve thought about how little like that there was like a week where Ivy and Assar were able to play minutes but Assar was still coming back so he wasn’t even close to being a starter at that point so there was never that time where the THJ kind of always fit in that starting group there’s always a need for him because of the injuries that happened in the middle of the year but um I do just want to quickly just while we’re talking about Alexander Walker so Brett Seagull from Clutch Points um just tweeted out Rockets are out on the kill Alexander Walker clippers are viewed as a long shot it’s still between Atlanta and Detroit so um I think Brett that he’s a pretty credible source I feel like especially in the last 12 months so um
Oh yeah and that makes sense they don’t have they don’t have a way to get him
they just use their they just use their non- taxpayer on DFS like
so either they’re trading someone else to do that but like so that makes sense i’m not saying that it’s good to confirm that but that makes sense
um I think the other thing to just keep in mind and again this could be just me reading the situation yeah i wonder if the front office prefers Ivy as their super six-man first guy off the bench in the featured ben bench score
that’s not a bad role for him especially as he’s coming back from injury
like do they see him in that role um as a better fit rather than being next to Kade especially with Assar and Duran already in the lineup and I know I got fried for this on Twitter like he shoots 40% from three blah blah blah like yes but there’s context to that he’s super streaky and and he doesn’t right now have the gravity of a 40% three-point shooter that could come right but we saw what happened when THJ Oh oh Lavia is going to the Lakers

i don’t know how that’s going to work today um okay maybe Kyle Duncan Robinson can you just talk us through his situation what uh what he did with the Heat and Yeah how the Pistons could maybe acquire him because there’ve been interest there reported yeah so Dunc Duncan Robinson declined his player option with the Heat for $20 million because and this is the big important thing is because only like 9 million of that was guaranteed so everyone was freaking out oh no he’s going to want $20 million what no
he wants more than $9 million so if you can if you can get him for a number that gets him more guaranteed money than $9 million he’s you know going to be happy most likely that was to sign a longerterm deal with the Heat and stay there but technically the Pistons could give him all or part of that mid-level exception um and and sign him with that um and then all the same sign and trade things apply as before um and so I think if you could if he can get three for 36 I think that probably is in the ballpark of what he’s worth um as a purely movement shooter um but I think as much as he sucks on defense if you don’t have Beasley around like and we just saw how valuable that was to have a movement shooter um that’s probably from a team standpoint functionally going to be more helpful than what else is available at this point right i would have said I would have said at the beginning of this Aldama is priority number one um Laravia is maybe number two um Nikquille Alexander Walker is better than Duncan Robinson I think yes

but but Robinson might fill a bigger role or bigger need so yeah i think I think I would value the defense um and I know I I’m with you on the spacing um and yeah losing Beasley is going to be very almost impossible to replicate um but yeah it’s Duncan Robinson like he just it just doesn’t excite me i’m not going to lie as much as if not there we desperately need to shoot like I would rather just bring back Tim Hardway Jr i know we need that other shooter but
I don’t know maybe that’s where we’re at where we have to get that true second shooter he’s going to be Duncan Robinson he does move well off the ball like I know when we play Miami like I’m always watching him fly around off handoffs like a team working well with JD there um Stu maybe but it’s Yeah there’s some clear weaknesses on the defensive side that scare me a little yeah and I think that’s where I mean he’s he’s no worse than Beasley defensively but Beasley was historic last year shooting right so this is that would be a
we’re just trying to make up for for some missing pieces and again maybe you just stick with THJ in that point because at least he tries on defense so maybe you don’t go that route and you say “Okay T we bring THJ back on you know reasonable deal or my favorite bring him back on a massive one-year overpay so that at the trade deadline if Booker decides he’s done playing with all those young guys out in Phoenix you have another salary that you can send out that’s not Tobias.” Um and so I think that’s where the Pistons too if I’m the Pistons I’m talking I’m saying “Hey here’s the number we’ll bring you back at or we can give you this one-year overpay and let’s see what we need to do.” Um like kind of see how things shake out because basically I’m going to give him whatever he wants up into the tax line so if I’m I if I can get him up to that 22$24 million maybe more just as a one-year overpay to be matching salary then he will expire that’s a good asset to have and he’s he’s happy because he’s getting paid more than he would anyway um and gets to hit free agency next summer again when a bunch of teams are going to have cap room
and so I think that’s kind of my at this point that was my like most likely scenario is they bring most guys back they maybe sign one more guy and then overpay THJ to have cap flexibility at the trade deadline and into next summer that’s I think what most likely is going to happen at this point yeah it’s Yeah I are we How are you just feeling at this very very moment purely as a fan Kyle just underwhelmed and our inspiration yeah um underwhelmed mostly because you know it’s you we get excited about this and as a cap nerd especially like I I’m I want to see the wheeling and dealing i want to be able to to to to look at all this um and and to see all of the guys that could even the reasonable targets be immediately off the board just like I’m glad we know now but it’s definitely a little bit of kick in the pants you know you’re kind of just

or swing that into a deal for Nikquil Alexander Walker well let’s see yeah Alexander Walker is still on the board there’s been nothing about him that I can see and we are an hour and 12 in but like you said that is because of the sign and trade probably needed so um ah a lot of Pistons Twitter seems to be melting down i’m trying to recall I last off season I remember being pretty underwhelmed i like the Tobias signing i always like that but the THJ trade I wasn’t like mad at but I wasn’t excited about um and then Beasley truthfully like I it was just like a okay another shoot up so I’m never I’m never going to lose my mind too much on the first week of her agency but yeah I was hoping to maybe see someone added by now right and I think the the Detroit Lions GM it’s a different sport so I don’t like making this comparison too much yeah but he says “We’re trying to win in December not April.” Meaning we’re not trying to win the offseason we’re trying to win the Super Bowl and so I think that’s kind of the similar like you can win the headlines or you can like you know just get better and I think that’s one thing that at least Tion did last year he didn’t win a lot of the headlines it was uh underwhelming on paper but then we had one of the best signings in the league in Beasley and and they pulled the right pieces in and so I think we just can’t and I do think a healthy Ivy does make a difference um it may not make the difference that some people think it will and we may see that okay he was part of the problem potentially chem like lineup wise and unlocking the offense but maybe he won’t be and maybe he takes another leap forward and he shows that he can be the number two or at least a good player next to Kade and and that is enough to continue to keep them competitive in an east that’s getting better um so but yeah

the Ron Holland pick as well last season wasn’t like one that people were overly excited about like I think people who studied the draft saw the potential but on the most part like that was a bit of a surprise pick at five um so no I like that anal that saying no about the headlines because that’s what this time of the year is um so I like I’m with you like obviously it’s exciting i want to see them sign Alexander Walker i would have loved to see them sign Alama but at the end of the day um I think you brought it up at the top of the show pretty much like Ron Holland needs more minutes like I don’t think he’s going to be a 10 minutes a game player next season i don’t think that’s what we want if he is that’ll be because he hasn’t progressed but I think most of the fan base is is bought in on him so he’s going to be playing closer to 20 minutes a night i would expect if he takes um you know develops so yeah look the Beasley thing is obviously concerning that sucks the timing of it’s horrible um he was kind of the one vet I think everyone wanted back i don’t know anyone that didn’t want him back so that has thrown a huge spanner in the works i understand that but um ultimately I think all the growth is going to come from our young guys um

the new T the taxpayer mid-level is Beasley’s to have that’s it and so everyone else is going to fall in line and it’s going to have to be signing trades so that’s my entire you know all the stuff I was putting together all offseason and I think Traan I thought they would already know about it but it sounds more and more as the more reporting comes out it’s like no they were surprised by this in a way that at least the timing of it all
so now if it all results in them getting Beasley on a minim minimum contract and he ends up being and he ends up being available to play again like you know that’s

what would be in that for the Celtics though just the the cap space out
um basically the way that would have to work is you sign THJ to a $19.4 million deal um with two years non-G guaranteed after so you could you could do a flat 19.4 you can do decreasing salary whatever the last two years being fully non-G guaranteed so it’s essentially uh it’s essentially an expiring or they can use it it’s almost better than an expiry because then they have the optionality to turn him into a trade chip the next summer when they’re ready to to trade for a bigger salary again um and guarantee as much as little as they want then you could take back Simon’s $27 million salary it would save them $8.5 million this year um and then they don’t have because Simons needs an ext like he’s going to need resigned he’s on an expiring
um and so then they don’t have to deal with that they save eight and a half million dollars this year which is a lot of money for their tax purposes too um and then they have a guy who plays every game who can who can be there um again if THA would have to want to go to Boston which I think he would um especially if he’s getting paid $19 million um and so and then you get they get off of Simons they they were shopping Simons anyway so my guess my point is he’s not in their the cards for them um that’s kind of the benefit is you get off of the eight and a half million this year and then you have a trade you have a non-g guaranteed trade piece that you can use next summer when to Tatum is healthy and you can push back in so then they can go back and trade for they can go get $27 million in salary as the Celtics come back in so it it it would be it would be beneficial and then you give them some seconds to make it to make them happy

So like giving him the full MLE is just the way you do it you build trust there you build rapport you have money that you can spend later um and and this does feel like the the Pistons are having to pivot hard and so this was what was available and they’re kind of overpaying a little bit for that um we’ll see i could be wrong man like

yeah no Carris is definitely he’s not the shooter if Beasley or Tim Hardway Jr but he did take five and a half threes a game last season shot 38% so like I think earlier in his career he was not a three-point shooter um he was much more of like a mid-range guy but I think he has rounded into like a decent three-point shooter no like just want to reiterate nowhere near on the level or volume of like a TJ or Beasley but I do think like teams aren’t going to leave him open like he’s going to constantly be defended there but yeah it’s definitely not uh like if we look at like I honestly think he’s if you look at the numbers he’s the same level of shooter as Nikil Alexander Walker just based purely on like attempts and percentage last season that’s interesting i don’t think I need that um but I guess so the difference is Nikquille Nquille is a better defender and Caris is a better on ball creator so that’s the difference
but yeah and obviously Nquille’s younger so like you imagine there’s more upside i think that for me was like the appeal um whereas Caris is like he’d have to be in his 30s now I feel like
so um that’s like he’s just a known commodity now um but I look I think yeah I think I know a lot of people aren’t going to like this deal i’ve never really been a big fan of Caris Levert like I we I said but um I do think like he can help like I I don’t think this is just a complete like horrible deal and he’s not going to contribute it’s just probably not what we all wanted and we’re hoping for right yeah and I think again this is this is a pivot of a pivot right this is this is option C and they’re getting it done before they’re left holding the bag and not spending all their resources
um it’s never a Yeah anyway um I don’t want to get too far into that um Paul Reed right off the bat too could I mean maybe signal they’re confident what they have at the four or there’s no one else they like enough to to pull in
um that’s definitely a possibility um yeah there’s a lot more to go and and I think we need to you know

so um in a signin trade so that could be Duncan Robinson that could still be Alexander Walker if they’re doing something weird with Ivy um you know that could be something okay um
and then they still have Aldama aldama or not Aldama jesus um Fonteo um they were

there’s rumors to like that they were trying to get off of Fonteo and again they can sign and trade Fontio into space again with MPJ going to the Nets they’re eating up a lot of their cap room so there’s there’s still not a lot left but if tech goes out in a deal they can bring back a $16.8 million player so there’s still moves there’s still lots of things that can happen and then you still have THJ um that can get moved so they still have several players and salaries of different sizes that they can use to go make a deal should they choose to

yeah no problem let’s jump in the chat and see how the how people are feeling um I’m going to have to dig into some Carth film and that kind of stuff over the next couple of days before I have a a really major opinion on this but let’s just go through the chat see how everyone is feeling josh I puked uh Devon hope you’re well my friend what have you said can’t talk but solid pick up beasley kind of screwed us but better defender and still solid sixman i agree i look I think what Caris can bring is some shot creation um some much needed shot creation mind you um and he has developed into like a better three-point shooter like earlier in his career he was around 32 31% but in his past uh where are we looking here oh wait the stats are really up here so last season he shot 37% from three on 4.5 attempts um and then he shot season before that in Cleveland he was only 33% on four attempts but then the season before that he was close to 40% so look definitely not an elite three-point shooter but I do think he’s a guy that’s going to knock them down from uh deep especially when he’s open i don’t think he’s going to be this uh a player that teams can’t defend i’m just trying to find his percentages here in the mid-range because I feel like that’s where he can be pretty useful for the Pistons yeah 40% on the mid-range which is really solid um 45% so I think the creation stuff I think he can pass a little bit definitely not like a playmaker by any means but three four assists uh on his career um and then when we talk about on the defensive side he’s 6’6 so uh Beasley and THJ are around that 6’4 65 so a little bit taller so I think he can if you have him at the three it’s probably a little bit undersized but um as Brandon says here he’s a three and D wing with bad D and not a great three you can get a few assists i think he’s he’s okay defensively i don’t think he’s a negative i think to be honest he’s probably going to give you a little bit more there than Beasley and THJ not that that’s the bar we should be looking at necessarily but um and I think he will knock down his open threes oh looks like we got Kyle back and he’s back um I will be honest so far some most the chat is not overly excited about Caris Lever but that that’s to be expected a lot of

um if they’re any good and then you have Stu who was shooting at a good clip last year and like has shown over a couple years that can shoot it and they don’t they didn’t play him that way now maybe he wasn’t skilled enough to know where to pop too because they kind of made it sound like he was always in the way they didn’t like the looks they were getting when he popped versus when he rolled and so they they went away from it um in terms of the pick and roll aspect of it um and so yeah I just don’t know how much JB even uses that is kind of the question so yeah that’s not what’s happening at this point i think though um with Stu like I I I think we all want to see him shooting threes again but I still don’t think like I know he made improvements and like I still just don’t think he’s a guy though anyone was going to defend like he’s got to do it for a little like a couple of seasons in a row so but I do want to see him start shooting threes again but um if he’s just popping and no one’s really defending him or that kind of thing like I can see why maybe they just went “Let’s get you back in the post.” Um like if if Stu’s the only stretch

yeah for what it’s worth there’s two reasons why that doesn’t work cuz one you’re not you’re not trading John for a first for John Collins you didn’t do that four years ago when he first got his name on the trade block second um Fontki is not enough he makes $26 million and so essentially that would also have to be a THJ signing trade situation which is even more hard because I don’t think he would want to go to Utah i don’t think they want him in Utah and so you’d have to send him somewhere he wants to be um and then have it be a three-teamer or you’re trading like Fonteo Sasser and um and doing the sign and trade with Schroeder i think it would take all of that to get to the right number so John Collins is hard to get to it’s a hard number to get to not impossible but hard um and I’m not giving up assets to do that um especially if they’re not taking on the full salary to like back i’m saying this is a salary dump i’ll take him off your hands so you don’t have to deal with him but you’re not trading assets real assets for him you might have to send some seconds to whatever team’s going to eat THJ or some of the other contracts to get it done and I don’t I don’t mind that um but you’re not trading real assets for him yeah um I was just updating the ticker here um but yeah the John Collins one is that that’s very interesting we’ll see what happens there i’m really intrigued because it feels like Fonteio’s like that’s a big p piece to play out here um is his contract is he 8 million flat

yeah in a way it really feels like I feel like I’ we’ve said this a couple of summers but like the Ivy injury and not getting all that data of him not just in the regular season but playoffs it kind of would be like it pushes things back a little bit more because you still want to see him with Kade and Spacy see how that works right
we didn’t really get that some people will say “Well we have seen enough of it.” But I think clearly Trajan hasn’t seen enough of it or else I mean he could still move Ivy this off season but um we’ll see but it kind of pushes things back again because Ivy kind of is that that player that if the Pistons are looking to go on an all-in move it feels like he will be the one to be at the center of that maybe with Ron or I I don’t know maybe it’s Jaylen Dur or maybe it’s just Ivy and a heap of picks whatever but you’re kind of in this pattern where like like you said that’s why the next trade deadline could make more sense because you’ll have ideally 40 to 50 games of data by then of hopefully Ivy and Kade and if one of them gets injured then I yeah we’ll see obviously maybe they extend Ivy this summer do you have actually I know Tan the only thing he said about Duran and Ivy’s extensions is we’ll look into it later in the summer based off what we saw with Chabari Smith i think Ivy and Duran will be slightly more than that for sure

yeah like for three years worst case if he’s bad then the following year you trade him not a big deal like scoring guards can can be moved um at that number it’s not terrible um if he wants percentage of the cap we’re talking almost $40 million a year and like average annual value over three years that a little different um and we’re seeing how hard Jaylen Green’s contract was to move as it was now I think he’s been better than than Jaylen Green and I think he’s been more consistent than Jaylen Green so of course that’s the floor um so I think that’s where I don’t see the Pistons necessarily feeling like they’re ready to make that commitment to him and I don’t think he’s going to budge on that number just because he got injured because injury isn’t one to expect to have like long-term effects like it wasn’t like an ACL it wasn’t anything like that it was a clean break it should be fine um Duran on the other hand I’m comfortable with Duran at $25 million a year you know I don’t love it because he’s not a defensive player he’s not a shooter so like the amount of big men that get paid that amount and actually live up to that that can’t do those things is very very minimal i think if they pay him that figure 25 that they are they do believe he can get there defensively he did grow in the second half of the year and I think I actually thought he was pretty solid in the playoffs like Cat exposed him but Cat’s like

I think it has to be waiting yeah because I think the mechanisms to go all in are much more challenging this this summer because they don’t have a lot of their big money guys are expiring um and so like that was part of it um most of anything they’re going to have to do is signing and trading their own guys as like to send them back out um it also because Ivy you didn’t get a full season of Ivy you didn’t get a full season these guys so um it’s easier to trade guys when they’ve got their rookie extensions done because they can still be on reasonable deals but like match salary um so I think that’s why is because he doesn’t want to just trade all of his flexibility now and be stuck when they don’t really know um I mean the Pistons didn’t even win a playoff game a playoff series so like to say that they’re ready now to compete in a week east is not necess I mean it is kind of true but we don’t know that for sure and so I think that’s really why um you have proof of concept now you got to see if you can build on it and it’s just some unfortunate things leading up to it that kind of put a you know pop the balloon if you will um yeah so yeah I think that’s partly why um I think once if they get some extensions done you can see next summer being a summer they can move on things because they have matching salaries and guys that are maybe living up to it um but yeah it’s hard you have to remember all these teams had good players that they traded away so they had extra draft picks they had extra flexibility like there was things they teams you know the Magic drafted well and so they were able to trade guys and get extra picks and then all of the sudden you know they have the flexibility and the pieces now to go make a move to bring in their third best player whereas like the Pistons don’t even know who their second best player is yet so like you spend all your assets getting your number two yeah if you spend all your assets getting a number two it’s really hard to get the number three that you need

which means they um if they were to go under the cap they don’t have any more cap holds the they’ve reached the like number before they have incomplete roster charges again I think they’re the over the cap team so 12 guys under under contract so they have three more spots plus three three two ways to fill tim Hardway Jr the cap hold is still intact but Beasley’s contract cap hold is still intact and so is Lindy Waters so they can bring those guys back to varying degrees um so still some flexibility you still have um Fonte had an $8.3 million contract that he can move be moved for players um so there’s lots of flexibility still ahead of them now whether or not they’re going to do anything with that it’s hard to say and then the other thing we don’t we’ve seen that um Schroeder has agreed to a contract with the Kings but we haven’t seen the details of that yet and so it’s not unlikely that that could be a sign and trade where the Pistons get at least an exception to use whether they can use the full um like added extra salary to get the 22 million they can at least get a $14 million player exception uh traded player exception to bring in another mid-level player um which would be useful um so that’s kind of where things stand currently and we’re just kind of watching to see where the chips fall um things that could and then there’s still the Ivy endurance extensions that will happen this summer um or could happen this summer so that’s something else we’re looking out for that stuff will likely get done after free agency kind of winds down um just because most of their their capital talking to agents will be with the free agents so at this point most of the stuff that’s going to happen is going to have to be through signing trades so any more Pistons news is likely going to be that
