Back here with Bob Melvin before the Giants and the Diamondbacks, game one of the series. Good news, Logan Webb gets the ball today.
It’s always good news. And when you talk about, well, I didn’t want to go there. With team meetings, you always have a little bit of an idea who’s pitching. But I I look, when Logan Logan Webb takes the mound, similar what we were talking about with Robbie Ray the other day, you feel good about your chances. The way Logan’s pitched this year, we always feel great. Your number one’s on the mound makes you buff your toughest shot a little bit more.
Yeah. So, and it’s a tough matchup. The Diamondbacks, I know they’re missing a couple of their top guys, but this is a team that hits.
They do. You look at the runs scored. You know, other than the Cubs and the Dodgers have gone off the charts. They led the National League last year in in runs scored. They still score runs with the team they have. Even though they’re down a couple of guys, especially in this ballpark, they’re tough to deal with.
Well, Christian C, we’re going to start nicknaming him babe or something. He keeps coming up with hits. And he’s hitting lead off again today.
He is. You know, it’s Look, we’re trying to get run our best compliment out there and get the guys that are the hottest up there the quickest. it. He did not look like he was, you know, in awe of having to lead off in a major league game. What is he 10 for his last 25 with the homer? He’s one of our hottest guys and we’re going to get him up there. It
it was fun to watch him yesterday cuz, you know, they had the rain before the game and it got a little sloppy out there and it took about 10 seconds. His uniform was head to toe covered in mud.
I think that’s the way he likes to play and I think he enjoys that cuz you know he’s one of those grinders that going to do anything to win and that means getting dirty, that means getting dirty. You are giving Daniel Johnson a chance to play, huh? Yeah, I I I need Yas needs a day off. I think Jung Hoo is going to need a day off here pretty soon, too. Maybe tomorrow. So, maybe we get Daniel a couple games in a row. Does a nice job for us. You know, you don’t want him around sitting around too long because when he was first here, he did some good stuff for us.
Uh Patrick Bailey is back behind the plate again. I know you and I talked about him a couple days ago, but it does seem like the swing, the at bats are starting to look better.
I agree with you. not as many, you know, big misses and not offbalance as much anymore. Staying on a ball and a breaking ball the other day, hitting it down the line and so tracking the ball a little bit deeper. He has the ability to be an offensive player.
And final thought, I think we all know that Raphael Devers is going to hit and hit big. I mean, his track record is just too good, but we we are still kind of waiting for that normal Devils to show up. You know, I think when teams goes through certain things, it can be contagious and, you know, maybe putting a little bit too much pressure on himself to have to be that guy to drive in runs. I agree with you. We’re going to see it and we’re going to see it soon.
All right, that’s the Giants manager, Bob Melvin. It’s game one of the series here in Arizona. We’ll get you ready for first pitch right after this. It’s been the Bob Melvin show.
We play good defense. We pitch. We execute. So, I think we we just need to focus on all the different areas to make our team better and to be able to win games in in different ways.

We’re ready to go here from Chase Field on this final day of June. Giants and Dbacks opening up the series. And for the first pitch, here’s Dave Fleming. Thank you, Joe. So, let’s see if the Giants can get the offense revved up here in Arizona. Christian CS certainly has been doing his part and he’s hitting leadoff today and he takes a pitch that is called a ball even though that could have been strike one to start the game. We’ll see what the strike zone looks like from Quinn Walcott tonight. Christian C eight for his last 15. He’s been hot. Ryan Nelson, the righthander, and he misses outside with a 95 mph fast. It’s 2 and0 to de Ramos and without Matt Chapman and now Casey Schmidt on the injured list and Jung Hu Lee struggling Melvin’s trying some different lineup combinations. Willie Adamus continuing to struggle. CS swings away 200 and hits a popup foul first base side. Pave Smith coming over and he’ll catch it right up against the net. Smith
was running out of room but just enough real estate to stick the glove up and catch it before it hit that net. CS
looked a little frustrated. It looked actually looked a little shocked that that one didn’t make it over the net and out of play. And now Deers comes up against this right-hander. Tall lean. Ryan Nelson 4 and two with a 371 RA. He’s made seven starts, 17 appearances overall. Evers takes fast ball right down the middle for a called strike. Divers had a very quiet weekend in Chicago. Just one hit against the White Socks. This is the seventh time Ryan Nelson has started a game against the Giants in his career. The pitch de takes high six mph fast ball. One and one. And he’s really, if you take the last five of those starts, he’s got a 2.10 ERA going back to 2023. So, two seasons plus of really good results against the Giants. De swings and misses. High fast ball and it’s one and two. And Debor is missing. I It gives you an idea of he is a little off right now. He’s missing some fast balls out over the plate that he usually doesn’t miss. One and two to count to left-handed hitter with that wide open stance. He takes high and tight. Look out right up near his chin.
Oh, he started right on time. 640 first pitch time. 78Β° indoors with the air condition going. We won’t tell you what it is outside. It’s obscene. 2-2 Denvers fouls this one. All right, we’ll tell you. 113 right now at 6:45 basically.
That’s it. That’s it. Yeah, it’s cooled off. Sun’s starting to go down. They don’t do daylight savings time of course here in the desert. So, it’s down to 113. I was in the car earlier today and the car thermometer said 117Β°. You know it’s hot when even the people here think it’s it’s actually hot.
Yeah, everybody here is complaining. De used his timeout after that foul ball. Back in the box now. Two and two. A pitch. De strikes out swinging. Fast ball got him. That one was a perfect pitch. Up and away, but probably a strike. Two down. Our time attempt sponsored by Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness. We’re all strong on this planet. So, two outs, bases empty for Elliot Ramos. Ramos having an excellent year. He’s cooled off a little bit lately, hitting 278, 13 home runs, 44 batted in. Swings and misses here through a high fast ball. Already a lot of swings and misses by the Giants against Ryan Nelson. I say a lot for the first few hitters of the game. He’s piled up several already and all on that fast ball. One strike pitch. Ramos swings and misses again. Another fast ball. It’s 0 and two. So Ramos immediately behind the count. Two strikes. Nelson folding at the belt. Starts his motion and pitches. Bravo strikes out. Swinging. High fast ball. Got him. Well, Nelson just overpowered the Giants to start this game. Logan Webb will take the mound. No score. Going to the bottom of the first in Arizona on the KVR Northern California Honda dealers radio network.

Bottom of the first. His first pitch of the game is just outside. A sinker to Heraldo Perdomo hitting leadoff for the Dbacks tonight. Switch hitter. Short stop. The pitch. He takes this one high and the count is two and0. The web trying to get a feel I think for the mound for the landing spot. Those are two kind of uncharacteristic misses for him to start the game. Two pitch. Perdomo lines one to right. Daniel Johnson is there though to move back and make the catch. Peromo square that one up but out number one. Giants defensive alignment sponsored by Rayon Law. Injured. Call the Giant Lawyer at 4158881045 or the giant lawyer.com. Giants have Daniel Johnson as you just heard in right field tonight in place of Ystreky. Lee in center, Ramos in left. The pitch to Catel Marte, a sweeper slider and just a little bit low. Check swing. He almost swung. That was almost a strike two different ways. Probably could have been a strike both ways. The pitch. Marte hits a fly ball to right. That one not hit all that hard. Johnson kind of froze. Now he comes in and catches. Two down. So Marte retired on the infield. It’s Poss at third. In case you missed the news, Casey Schmidt did have a an MRI today. So he’s had the CAT scan, the MRI, and the X-ray, and everything’s structurally okay, but the bone bruise and the swelling still just is persistent. So he goes on the injured list. The pitch David Smith with two down and nobody on. No score. Bottom one takes a strike from Web. And Tyler Fitzgerald is right back up after what a week in TripleA Sacramento. Fitzgerald at second. Adamus at short. Dom Smith at first with Bailey doing the catching. Sinker just a little bit high to Pave Smith. Left-handed hitter. 265 average, eight home runs. The pitch pulled on the ground to first. Fair ball. Dom Smith has it. He’ll run to the bag for the put out and that retires the side. What was that? Seven pitches to start the game for Logan Web. Dom Smith leads off against him here and a fast ball at 96 mph. Strike one called. Giants went down in order and both Devers and Ramos struck out and Ryan Nelson got five swings and misses in the first inning alone against three hitters. Smith lines one into center field. Base hit. Well, he went with something other than the fast ball, a curve ball, and Dom Smith gets the first hit of the night for the Giants. This is the Taco Bell second inning. Download the Taco Bell app to unlock rewards and exclusive access. You mentioned the fast ball. Ryan Nelson threw 78% four seam fast balls in his last start. He’s throwing hard. He’s throwing it with a lot of confidence. And he might be secondguessing that last pitch because he did go to a curve and Smith with a hit
here. Predictably a fast ball coming to Adamus and it’s a called strike right on the inside corner. Adamus thought that one was a ball. He shoots a glance back at Quinn Walcott, home plate umpire. We’re going to see a lot of fast balls tonight and you and I will be seeing them. The Giants will actually be trying to hit him. Adamus swings and misses through a fast ball. He was very late with that swing. And it does have he’s got the the the high spin rate thing going and he’s one of those guys who has the the release point that I think becomes problematic for hitters to gauge where that fast ball’s going to end up behind the barrel. Hard to do against the fast ball. 02. That one high and tight. Thomas bends back out of the way. That’s the second time Nelson not afraid to pitch inside. He came up high and tight to Devs in the first inning. Now he does it to Adamus here. Jung Hu Lee on deck. Who’s on deck? Sponsored by Timberch. Timber decking and railing. Everything wood should be. Visit timbert.com. Adamus strikes out swinging. Man fast ball 97 miles an hour. There is zero nuance right now. You got Deers, Ramos, and Adamus. All three of whom were just blown away by the Ryan Nelson fastball. And Nelson, I mean, he’s only in their starting rotation because of the season ending injury to Corbin Burns. He was a reliever mostly the first two months. Burns went out. Now here he is.
Jung Hu Lee first pitch swing against a fastball that might not have been a strike for the outside. Lee fouls it off to the left. Well, the Giants have the worst hitting numbers of any team in the big leagues against four seam fast balls. So th this could be a terrible matchup for the Giants if Nelson’s fast balls like this. The 01. That is a fast ball for a strike. Perfect pitch right on the outside right at the knees and 96 mph. Runner at first, one out, no score. You’re going to have to hit the fast ball tonight against this guy. have to 02 pitch. Lee pulls it sharply. Foul. He got a fast ball in tried to turn on it and just pulled it foul. Ryan Nelson the pitch. Lee bounces this one to first. Fielded by Smith. He’ll step on the bag for one. The throw to second and they had to tag Tom Smith, but he ran right into the tag. Webb threw seven pitches in the first inning. That’s it. The 1-1. Suarez takes down and away. two and one Suarez. Joe mentioned it going through the starting lineups and he’s he’s kind of having an uneven year. He’s been real hot and cold. The pitch he swings it misses. Strike two, but he has 25 home runs. They’ll ask for time and step out. He’s one of the guys, the Diamondbacks, we were talking on the field there. A lot of national baseball writers are here in town. Some of them just live here, so you see some of them. Bob Nightingale, who covers a game for USA Today. There’s a swing and a ball chopped foul, says that he thinks the Diamondbacks are the key team in terms of the trading deadline because they’re a game under 500. They have a lot of talent and if they decide to sell, they’ll have the best players he thinks available. 2-2 out and away. Flores would not chase that slider. So, a full count. Three and two. And Webb’s thrown as many pitches to Aeno Suarez as he did the entire first inning. 3-2 Suarez strikes out swinging. Well, Webb was just convinced that if he kept going out there, he was going to get the chase and he was right. And he’s yelling at himself cuz it took a little too long, but he got the job done. One out. Here’s Guriel the DH tonight for Arizona. And if you missed our pregame show, we had Tom Candyotti. long time Diamondbacks broadcaster on and I asked him I said what what are the Dbacks going to do? Guriel swings and misses here. A first pitch slider and he said this series is going to go a long way towards determining that would be a pretty stunning fall over the course of two years when you consider the Arizona Diamondbacks won the National League tennet two seasons ago. Here’s a swing and a little bloop into shallow right coming in Johnson and he’ll get there to make the catch. Two down. It’s true. They they got in as a wild card team and then blitzed their way through the National League playoffs and made the World Series and had another good year last year. Big expectations this year. Just they’ve been hurt and they haven’t performed. And I think part of Tom Candyotti’s opinion was that Corbin Burns is out for the rest of this year and probably out for next year, too. Here’s a pitch outside. Zack Allen’s a free agent. Mel Kelly’s a free agent. So, the Diamondbacks may just decide next year has to be a kind of a retooling year. Jake McCarthy takes ball two outside of Web. Anyway, but he thinks these four games are huge in terms of what the Diamondbacks might decide to do. Duo pitch. That’s called strike. There’s a long way to go. This we’re not at the trade deadline. We’re still a month away, but divisional games against a team you’re competing against for playoff spots and four games at home. McCarthy breaks his bat, hits a looping liner into right field, and that’s a base hit for the first hit and first base runner for the Diamondbacks with two outs. here in the bottom of the second. Let’s pause here for station identification. This is the KMBBR Northern California Honda dealers radio network. This is the flagship of Giants baseball and FM San Francisco the sports leader. The two outs, runner at first and a threat to run. Jake McCarthy with Tim Tawa, right-handed hitter, he takes way outside. A slider misses from Web. Ball one. Lots of off speed. This it’s like Ryan Nelson and Logan Weber having opposite games. Nelson’s throwing almost entirely fast balls and Webb is throwing a ton of off speed. Here’s a throw to first. McCarthy dives back safely. Big McCarthy has not spent a lot of time in the big leagues. He only has 59 at bats and he hasn’t been on base very much so. He only has two steals, but he is definitely a threat. Tawa swings and tops it foul. Timawa is playing left field tonight for the Diamondbacks. Nothing nothing game. guy who played his college baseball at Stanford and really earned his way up through the minor leagues. Wasn’t a huge prospect. Just produced the pitch. He tops this one. Foul change up and it’s one and two. [Music] Tim Thomas is kind of like Logan Webb in high school. He was a great quarterback in football. There’s a check swing foul by Tawa. But Web, you you sort of think, okay, high school quarterback, pitcher. Easy to make that connection. Tawa never has been a pitcher at the college or professional level. He’s got six home runs this year. the pitch outside with a putter. Not a lot of sinkers from Web. Two and two. But a much tougher inning here. He’s thrown 20 pitches in this second inning. Here’s the 2-2. Tawa strikes out swinging. He got him with the sinker. Show him all the other stuff and then save that one for when you need to put him away. Two strikeouts for Web, one hit. No runs to the third.

All right, thanks Dave. It’s Tyler Fitzgerald back from the minor leagues as he swings at the first pitch. A high fast ball from Ryan Nelson and fouls it straight back. Nelson has faced the minimum number of hitters thus far. Tom Smith did pick up a single in the second, but he was erased on the Jung Hoo Lee double play. Son out of the wind up and the 01. Fitzgerald a swing and a foul out of play into the upper deck on the right side. It’s nothing at two. Was a brief stint for Tyler Fitzgerald back in Sacramento. He played in only four games with the River Cats last week. Here’s the O2. And that’s not close. Up and away. But with Casey Schmidt going on the injured list today, opened up a roster spot. And Fitzgerald, who was only sent down a little over a week ago, is back. Here he swings and misses. Strike three. And Nelson going to something other than a fast ball there. He went to a slider that darted low and away. Nelson picks up his fourth strike out and all four have been swinging strike threes. So here is Patrick Bailey. Well, the Giants did have to put Casey Schmidt on the injured list. Just not quite ready to go. Bailey takes a ball outside. The hope is that Casey will be ready when he’s eligible to come off the injured list. Giants backdated the roster move a couple of days, so he’s eligible when the team gets home. Here’s a swing. A pounding ball left side and that’s through right between short and third. Vuarez, the third base, was way in and off the line. He couldn’t get it. And then Purdomo going into the hole out of his reach as well. So Patrick Bailey having himself a nice road trip. A couple of big extra base hits that knocked in runs in Chicago. He’s got a hit first at bat in this series. The runner on with one out in this nothing nothing game. Here’s Daniel Johnson batting left-handed. Takes ball one low and in.
Well, it’s good to see a little less swinging and missing from Patrick. And even on a ball like that, not, you know, real loud, monstrous contact, but put putting the ball in play a little more. He takes his lead at first, not a real big one as Johnson swings. It’s a high fly ball deep center field. Thomas moving back, but big part of the yard. He’ll stop in front of the warning track and he makes the catch. Johnson hit that well. He got a fast ball out over the plate but wrong part of the ballpark with two outs. Bailey still at first and back to the top of the lineup now and Christian cause. Giants are also hoping to get Matt Chapman back next week during that home stand that final week before the All-Star break. First pitch to CS. He swings and hits a high foul. The out of play along the right field line. Chapman nursing his own hand injury and supposed to take some batting practice today. Sure. We’ll hear how that went. A big day for Chapman on the the rehab process. Next one to cause. He swings and bounces it weakly to short. Charging in for Domo. He’ll glove it on the second hop and a short flip to Marte at the bag for the force out on Bailey. Ends the inning. One hit, one left for the Giants. We’ll go to the bottom of the third. Still nothing. The big hits, all the great brats. You got to be kidding me. And all the swagger. Relive the day’s biggest plays all in one lightning fast hour. Show. You better believe it.

Logan Webb throws a sinker that’s fouled back by Alec Thomas. Web’s retired six of the first seven Dbacks hitters that he’s faced. Hill one. Thomas swings and a popup shallow left along the line. Three players converging. It’s going to fall. A base hit. Ramos with a bare hand picks it up. Thomas speeding to second and he’ll slide in safely there with a hustle double. Well, that was just a little popup right along the left field line. Very shallow. Adamus and CS went out. Ramos came in. It dropped in between the three. It was Bramlos that picked it up with a bare hand. And Thomas, he can fly and was thinking double out of the batters box. Fortunately, Ramos’s throw was way offline. Fitzgerald had to catch it about 20 ft in front of the base. Now a bunt from Herrera in front of home. Bailey picks it up. Throws load of Smith can’t dig it out. It carams off his glove. rolls to his right and Thomas who was going to hold at third heads home and scores without a throw. And things are going very sideways now for the Giants here at this bottom of the third inning. It’s one- nothing Arizona. A good bunt out in front of home plate. be perfect there for the Giants as Bailey picked it up with a bare hand. The throw shortho Smith who did not handle it and then it went from bad to worse as Purdomo takes a strike. Not only did Smith not catch the throw, but it then deflected about 30 feet to his right in the direction of second base. Now Purdomo swings, grounds one to second. Big hop. Fitzgerald has it. A flip to second is high. Handled by Adamus. The relay to first. That’s in the dirt. Smith again can’t dig it out as the ball bounces all the way back to Willie Thomas who ended up over near the second base position. This has not been a clean inning. Not even close. The Giants do get an out at least there on Herrera. runner at first with one out for Marte.
That was real close. The Diamondbacks asked for a minute to to look at the replay. That was such a high feed and I they didn’t challenge, but gosh, you you watch it and I’m not totally sure that Adamus was able to keep his foot on the bag. Well, it’s one- nothing Arizona here in the bottom of the third as Marte takes ball one low and in. And so every ball put in play in this half inning, you think about the throws that the Giants have made. There’s a called strike to even the count. First, Ramos on the Thomas double. While not an error if Ramos makes a better throw from shallow left, they’re going to get Thomas at second base. Next pitch and it’s a called strike right over the inside corner. One and two to Marte and then Bailey with his throw. Bailey will be charged with an error. Herrera does get petted with a sacrifice on his bunt. The air allowing the run to score as Marte takes low. It’s two and two and then nearly disaster on that Fitzgerald feed to Adamus. He out at second on Herrera. Pitch to Marte and it just misses. A little high with a cutter. And now a full count. Web trying to pitch through at all. Certainly not getting hit hard in this inning. 3-2 pitch and Marte bounces it foul in and out of the Giants dugout on the first base side. This is a highscoring Arizona team. The Diamondbacks have scored the third most runs in baseball this year. The 3-2 way outside ball four. That was an easy take for Marte on a sinker. Web issues his first walk of the evening. Here’s Pav Smith now. It’s one- nothing Arizona in the bottom of the third. Look for a ground ball here. That would get him out of the inning. Smith certainly a double play candidate. Doesn’t run very well. Makes a strike. Only the Dodgers and the Cubs have scored more runs than this Diamondbacks team this season. Here’s the 01 and strike two call. Beth jumps ahead here. No balls, two strikes to Smith. All those runs and yet the Arizona Diamondbacks are still one game under 500. two that’s in the dirt change up and the big issue has been their pitching staff dealing with injuries to their starting rotation to their bullpin. The bullpin frankly has been kind of a mess here lately for Arizona. It really hurt him over the weekend. Now a swing and a ground ball right to first. Smith charges, gloves, goes to second for one. Back to first. Smith covering not in time. Nice stretch. A good feed there from Smith to Adamus, but Haven Smith just enough speed to beat the relay. So that’ll keep the inning going for Domo over to third. And now they’re on at the corners with two down for Suarez. So, it’s definitely something to keep in mind in this series. All of the late inning bullpin struggles for this Arizona team should feel like they’re never out of a game if they do find themselves down late as Suarez takes a ball outside. Well, big spot here for Logan Webb. Arizona has scored the one run in the inning trying to prevent any further damage as turns throws to first. Smith a small lead back standing up. Not a guy you want to make a mistake to. And Aoheno Suarez 25 home runs, 68 RBI as he swings and grounds it foul. The third base side one and one. Only three players in Major League Baseball this year that have hit more home runs than Suarez. Oh Otani, Aaron Judge, the Mariners catcher, Cal Raleigh pitches high and it’s two and one. Only Raleigh and Sea Suzuki of the Cubs have more RBI than Suarez. Two-1 pitch. A swing and a foul popped up. Out of play to the right. Evens the count. I would like to know when the last time he bunded. It’s been, I imagine, a very long time. But there’s a hit if he wants it. Third baseman Suarez playing short for Domo up the middle. Debor swings, bounces one foul up the first base side. And he’s not being very patient right now. And I I I think it just speaks to he’s he’s pressing a little bit. He’s been a real patient hitter all year. Two one pitch. Ever swings and fouls it back. Heading our way. Yeah. still looking to break out on this road trip. Just one hit in 12 at bats now for Devers after he struck out swinging back in the first inning. Two balls, two strikes. Now the pitch de swings and misses. Strike three. 96. That was well above the belt. And another strike out for Nelson. That is his fifth here through three and a third innings. Here’s Elliot Ramos. Giants have a couple of singles. That’s it. Get to advance. A runner pass first against Nelson. Trailing by a one- nothing score. Here’s Elliot Ramos struck out his first time. Takes a fast ball high. almost in his big league career, which at this point is still pretty brief, has hit very well at Chase Field. Powels one straight back, doubles the count at one and one. Almost in six career games, has hit three homers and he’s got 11 hits in this ballpark. 11 for 21. Well, given that maybe a a big week forthcoming here for Elliot Ramos, the 1-1. He swings and hits a high popup foul first base side. Smith moving over and this time he’ll run out of room. It lands in the third row. One and two to Ramos with Dominic Smith waiting on deck. Just getting started in this series. Giants and Dbacks. All four games will be night games tonight through Thursday as Ramos swings and misses. Fast that was up and in at 96. And Nelson just continues to overpower these Giants hitters with fast balls. Lots of high fast ball. And there’s just not a whole lot you can do with that pitch up and in at that velocity. So two down here in the fourth for Smith who’s got one of the two Giants hits line to single to center. He swings here, lines one to deep right. McCarthy though moving back in front of the warning track will reach up and make the catch. They maybe got it just a bit off the end of the bat. It’s a very quick one, two, three inning for now.

A one pitch and it’s strike two call. by Cutter. Mentioned McCarthy, he’s playing a lot in right field right now because of an injury to Corbin Carroll. Giants are not going to see Corbin Carroll in this series. Carol hit by a pitch earlier this month, dealing with a chip fracture in his wrist. That was swing and a foul. McCarthy fouled it off himself. It’s one of those deals kind of like with Casey Schmidt where Carol got a hit and he thought he was going to avoid the IIL and the Dbacks just kept waiting and waiting. He never quite felt right and eventually the imaging showed that there was a very small fracture. McCarthy takes low. That’s obviously a big loss for this Arizona team with everything that Corbin Carroll does. Get him back eventually, but not in this series. The one-two ground it sharply and Webb able to knock it down as he reached down with a glove hand. The ball deflected up into the air as he picks it up and throws on to first for the out. Logan flashing a huge smile as he walks back to the pitcher mound as if he meant to do that. So, two up, two down here in the bottom of the fourth. Now, Tim Tawa struck out in his first atbat. The fifth inning is sponsored by Land Rover Marin, home of the simple price, simple process, because it’s the right thing to do. One- nothing Dbacks. And back with a playbyplay, here’s Dave Funny. Willie Adamus swings through a first pitch fast ball. Man, Willie’s got to be thinking, “What is going on?” He struck out in the first inning and I think he swung through all three fast balls in that at bat. Now he’s down 01, swinging right through a 94 mph fast ball here. The pitch is high one and one. I mean, Ryan Delson through four innings, no runs, six strikeouts and only 42 pitches. It’s hard to strike out six in four innings and only throw 42 pitches. They’re going down quickly now. A change up in the dirt. Ball two to Adamus. Giants have to adjust here to what Ryan Nelson is doing. Jungu Lee on deck and then Tyler Fitzgerald will also bat here in the fifth. One- nothing Diamondbacks. Rightander throws. Adamos drives this one towards right center field. It is slicing though. Back to McCarthy on the move. and he’ll catch it one away.
Well, that was good swing, good contact,
and even though Adam looks disgusted that the ball was caught, you can’t get too down about that. You You put a good swing on it and hit a ball hard. You did what you’re supposed to do. Maybe little consolation right now cuz that was that was some of the better contact he’s had in a while. Here’s Jung Hu Lee. The pitch. Lee goes after the first one and that was a fast ball up and away. Fouls it away. Strike one.
Nothing new of late for Nelson. Giants need to get him out of his rhythm. You include tonight. His last three starts. He’s pitched 15 innings and has given up four hits.
Wow. So, he’s on a roll. Lee takes high. Adamus hit his ball 110 mph. That again probably isn’t going to make him feel a whole lot better, but that’s a positive. That was a good swing. Lee needs a good swing. He had a couple of them in Chicago. Got nothing to show for those. Now he drives this one to left field going back on it quickly. Tawa all the way to the warning track, but he’ll catch it. Two down. Phillies will be in San Francisco on the next home stand, which is after this upcoming weekend. Bryce Harper’s back playing. They shut out the Padres’s on the Toyota out of town scoreboard tonight. 4 nothing in Philadelphia. The pitch. Fitzgerald takes a strike. You wouldn’t be shocked to know that was Zach Wheeler. Eight innings, no runs, no walks, 10 strikeouts. Zack Wheeler, the pitch. Fitzgerald pulls this one foul. And now the count is 0 and two. A’s, we were just talking about being in Sacramento over the weekend. The A’s were in Tampa. tonight and beat the Rays six to four. The Toyota out of town scoreboard 02 pitch. Fitzgerald checks his swing on a slider down and away. Jets are trailing one- nothing here. Red Sox pounded the Cincinnati Reds tonight 13-6 at Fenway. Been terrible times for the Red Sox since they traded away Rafie Devers, but they got a nice win tonight. One, two, fouled away. The Giants so badly need a game where they just put a big number on the board. They had the one against the Red Sox at the end of that series and I think everybody thought, “Okay, now now the offense will get going and it just has not happened at all.” One, two pitch. Fitzgerald drives this one down the right field line slicing and it’s going to be fouled in the end. Fouled by five or six feet. William Abrau tonight for the Red Sox. Good player. We saw him when the Socks were in San Francisco. Bru hit an inside the park home run and hit a grand slam in the same game, which had not happened since Roger Maris did it in 1958. Kind of an odd combination of events, but still 1958 inside the park home run and grand slam. Same game. One, two, foul. away. Fitzgerald’s having some pretty good swings here. Tyler struck out in his first at bat. Nelson has retired seven Giants in a row. Diamondbacks lead one- nothing. We’re in the fifth. The one two. Fitzgerald pulls this one down the left field line. That’s a base hit and it’s going to go to the wall. Tyler sprinting around first. He’ll head to second. Finally, the ball picked up alongside the wall by Tawa. He hits his cut off man Peromo towards third. Fitzgerald stops at second with a two out double. Well, the the at bats are definitely getting better for the Giants as this game goes on. Now they have a chance to actually get a run on the board. Bailey, who was kind of their RBI guy, which it wasn’t an intense competition for that award in Chicago, but over the weekend he was their guy. Bailey comes up here with two outs. Patrick bounced a base hit through the left side. His first time up tonight. Nelson throws. Bailey lines it to second and it’s caught by Marte. Wow. He hit it hard and right to the Diamondback second baseman. Just how it’s going for the Giants offense right now. Two balls scorched in that inning.

One- nothing Diamondbacks. Alec Thomas fouls the first pitch from Logan Web. Straight back out of play. It’s 0 and one. Diamondbacks lead the Giants one- nothing. We’re in the bottom of the fifth. More just frustration for the Giants offense in a much different way in the top of this fifth inning. Two balls blistered and nothing to show for it. Here’s a slider in for a strike. It’s 0 and two. The 110 line drive off the bat of Adamus that was caught. And then with Fitzgerald at second after a two out double. Patrick Bailey hit a line drive to second. 108. Now a Thomas line drive to left. And it’s going to get down. Base hit. Well, he didn’t hit that one very hard. He’s two for two and he hasn’t hit either ball hard. just kind of flipped that one into shallow left field. And that’ll frustrate Logan Web because he was ahead 02. Thomas, they lead off base hit. And now his speed becomes a real factor. Here’s Jose Herrera. Herrera put a sacrifice bunt down last time up and the Giants did not play it very well and it it led to the only run of the game. He squares here and bunts it first base side. Webb is going to field. Web shovels to first. man. And Dom Smith stretches out and takes that shovel just in time. And that was not real comfortable looking for Logan Webb, who got a little thing going with throwing to the bases right now. And he’s lucky that he got Herrera, but he did.
That was an underhand flip. Probably 50 ft away from first base. Got to got to be a little closer to confidently pull that off. But they did get the out on the play. Thomas goes to second. So now top of the order and with the Giants offense struggling the way it is, it becomes a real pressure situation here. Bailey came to the mound for a visit and Bailey, I think, was doing it because Webb had to hustle off the mound. And Patrick likes to do that to give his pitcher a chance to catch his breath. But Willie Adamus was not just going to let them meet without him. He came in and Willie had some spirited words for the Giants pitcher. That was a Habis Law bound visit. One- nothing Diamondbacks. Perdomo takes a strike with the slider. I’ve had to resist doing it over the weekend on the television side. Havislaw does not sponsor the mound visits on TV. They’re not paying for it. And I But two or three different times JP Martinez comes out. Here’s a sinker for a called strike on the inside. It’s 0 and2 and I almost said call me Havis if you need to a broker. We can make that happen now. Time late but time made it at home plate. Giants have three hits. Diamondbacks have three hits. Dbacks have the only run of the game. in scoring position with excellent speed base it to the outfield and Thomas is so fast it’s almost certainly a run 02O takes good change up and a check swing heel denied but no swing one and two we got the Diamondback’s best hitter by farel Marte on deck one and two puromo hits it foul he went back with a change up and Purommo went down and just made contact with that one. Still a ball in two strikes. 68 pitches for Logan Webb in the fifth inning. He’s been mostly efficient and he’s been great. The the run is going to be earned to his record. The only one that scored, but the pitcho fouls this one back. That was a better swing. And that was a fourseamer that did not get to the spot he wanted it. Webb got away with that one. That the whole design of the four seam and it’s been a really good pitch. It’s been a really good strikeout pitch for him this year, but he’s got to get it up. That one was kind of right out over the heart of the plate. One, two, pulls this one foul. He went down and got another very low change up. Pitch almost bounced and he still made contact. But he’s in a a battle here. Logan Web. This will be the seventh pitch of the at bat. Runner at second. One out. The pitch is pulled foul again. This time a slider down and in. I I can see why webb went with that four seam fast if he can get that thing up. I Herdomo is just covering down down down. It’s really hard to cover that pitch and the pitch at the top of the strike zone. One, two is in the dirt. He Webb said, “Well, I’m going to test the limits here.” Pommo took it. Two and two. This will be the ninth pitch of this at bat. Aldo Purdomo. 261 average, nine home runs. He’s a good player. 2-2. He pulls this one. Foul thinker. That was in on his hands. Was the ninth pitch. Now we’re going to get a tenth of this at bat alone. Web holding and pitching. Peromo strikes out swinging. He got him with the slider. Two down. What a battle that was. 10 pitch at bat and almost no mistakes by Web. the one I think that wasn’t the location he wanted it but everything else was a wellexecuted pitch and Perommo just kept battling. Fourth strike out for Web. The problem for Web is he’s still got to get through Marte. A fast ball for a strike. That was a cutter. 0 and one. Marte has flyed out and walked. Thomas at second. Two down. One- nothing Diamondbacks. Fifth inning. Here’s the pitch. Marte swings and misses. Another cutter. Strike two. This used to be really the the weaker side by far for Marte. He’s balanced out his switch hitting over the years. He used to be a guy you never wanted to face him batting right-handed in a big spot. The pitch is low. Change up. Blocked by Bailey. One and two. This is going to be the 78th pitch for Web. So this inning It’s only been four hitters and only one little soft single, but it’s a taxing inning. One, two, and a swing and a foul. Just barely got a piece of that one. Another low change in Logan Webs digging deep here. One and two. The pitch just outside. He tried to back door a cutter. That was a good pitch. Few inches off the plate. Two and two. Web looks to second. Throws. Marte hits a little fist shot toward third and a diving attempt by CS in foul ground. He can’t catch it, but man, what an effort by Christian CS. You couldn’t really call it a popup because it wasn’t hit that high. And CS went all out and a head first dive on the warning track dirt. He was peeking to make sure he wasn’t going to go head first into the wall. Now that that is a a hustle play from Christian C. Marte strike three called. Sinker came back to the inside corner and Logan Webb gets him. That was some clutch pitching from Web. to keep that run from scoring. Thomas stranded at Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? [Music] Oppo taco. A home run hit to the opposite field.

Daniel Johnson for the Giants leads off against Nelson who misses low with a first pitch. What was that pitch? Was a mystery ball. Statcast says cutter.
Okay, the one Johnson rips it down the right field line toward the corner. It is a foul ball and almost a home run. Straight down the line and just in the end maybe 10 ft foul and I think it had home run distance. It got over the wall. There is a question whether it would have gotten over the wall if it had stayed fair. Looked like another cutter and it was a hanging cutter.
Is a little vulnerable right now. Location is not what it was the first four innings.
Giants are trailing one- nothing. The 1-1 pitch to Johnson takes low. Giant Giants had much better at bats last inning against him. Still only thrown 60 pitches for the game. Two and one to Daniel Johnson. Batting ninth. Johnson hit a ball pretty hard his first time up. Flight out to deep center field. Two-1 pitch. Johnson lines one up the middle on one hop right to Peromo. He’s playing right there. He plays the hop and throws out Johnson. Well, I know it’s it’s hard to do, but if you’re the Giants, you have to just be encouraged by all right, we’re we’re going to break through against this. It’s so easy to get frustrated when you’re not scoring runs, but there’s a big difference between what was happening early in this game and what’s happening now. Here’s Christian CS. He’s 0 for two. Been redot lately. First pitch to him is pulled on the ground toward the hole at short over the backhand of Purdomo. Jump throw to first. One hop and they got him at first. Pay Smith with the stretch. What a play by Peromo. to can’t believe it. Two down. Giants are looking, but they’re not going to challenge. They They got him. Smith stayed on the bag. Believe in that one. That that I bet nine times out of 10 with Kas as the runner. That’s a hit. That is a big league play by Herdom. The shorts stop. What a throw across his body jump throw. Momentum taking him away from the bag. So, two down. Here’s Devers. One- nothing Dbacks. He takes high. Devils has had a frustrating night. Devers and Ramos are 0 for four with four strikeouts. Those are the two big threats for the Giants in the middle of the order. Nelson’s overpowered them with fast balls. The one pitch. De swings and misses. That’s a fast ball right out over the plate. Right now, Devers, he’s taking violent cuts. These are big aggressive swings, but he’s not connecting the 1-1 off the inside. Ball two. Cutter. Two down, nobody on. Giants trail by a run. Sixth inning. Same kind of lowscoring game that the Giants have been playing over and over again. Two-1 pitch. Divers swings and misses. Fast ball again. Rafie Deers. I would like to know if there’s been a game where he swung and missed this much at that. Benny, we asked if he’d ever bunt. He showed a bunt earlier in the game. His last sack bunt was 2019 and his only one of his career. He fouls this one back to the screen. Pass ball high and tight. One thing about Devers is, and it’s his style, and this is how he does it, and he should stop doing it this way. There’s no two strike little shorten up swing. He’s trying to to do damage with every swing he takes. Two and two. Nelson throws. Deers takes up and away. Pass ball. He’s worked the count full. Three and two. He very animated hitter. He’ll step out. He’s talking to himself. Diamondback’s bullpen is quiet. Three and two. Nelson with the pitch. De strikes out swinging. He got him with a slider. Everything would say fastball there. And he threw the slider. And Rafie Des has got the hattick. 0 for three with three strikeouts.

Giants trail one- nothing each team with three hits. The Diamondbacks the only run of the game. Pitch to Smith, left-handed hitter and he tops it. Foul and two. Lead off bloop kind of popup double from Alec Thomas. A sack bunt and a throwing error. And that’s how the Dbacks scored their only run. Smith is going to use his timeout. Heno Suarez is on deck. pitch in the dirt with a slider. One and two. And then Lordis Griel will also bat in the inning. Web’s doing his part. The pitch, swing, and a miss. Strike three. Haidder got him. Third consecutive strikeout for Web. One out. And we’ll pause for station identification on the KMBBR Northern California Honda dealers radio network.
This is Giant Space Ball. Nothing like it on K&BR and K&DF San Francisco Cumulus Media Station. Suarez grounds one backhanded by Adamos. It’s short. He bounces the throw to first in time to get Suarez. Two down. Cos dived in front of Adamus and Adamus couldn’t take his full stride and make the throw. He had to not short arm it. He had to short step it. Goss was right in front of him and Adam if Adamus had done his normal throwing motion, he would have stepped right on Christian G. I I you don’t see that very often, but he’s he’s got such a strong arm that he was able to make the play. So two down and ball outside to Guriel.
Willie just put his hand on his chest and breathed a huge sigh of relief as he looked at Cos as if to say that was close.
I saved your life. Guriel skies one to left deep. Ramos back. Gone. Wow. It didn’t even seem like Guriel got all of it. That one really carried out to left center field and just kept going. A solo home run makes it two nothing Diamondbacks. They did hit at 101 miles an hour, but that did not wasn’t a great pitch from Web and it kind of came right in. hanging slider and Guriel didn’t miss it but I off the bat I didn’t think that was going out now McCarthy pushes a bunt off the bound fair bare hand pick up webb he fires to first in time to get the out and then he screams I’m sure in frustration at giving up that home run he’s through the six but now the Diamondbacks lead is two two nothing onto the seventh

All right, Elliot Ramos to face Brian Nelson, the back starter still in the game. First pitch is a fastball strike. Wide strike called there by Quinn Walcott. Still throwing hard. That one at 96 mph. He’s only at 70 pitches. And now working with a two-run lead. Oh, one pitch is very high. Only the second time this season that Nelson has pitched into the seventh inning. He has yet to complete seven innings in a start this year. A 1-1. Ramos swings and a foul tip into the mit of Herrera. Up and in fast ball. Teams continue to pitch Ramos in. And at least tonight, Elliot, he’s been going after those high and in fast balls. One and two. Next offering and it’s high seven on that pitch. Two balls, two strikes. Nelson has been what would we expected tonight? A lot of fast balls. Relied on it heavily in this game. Two- two pitch. Ramos fouls it straight back. Giants have only three hits. Second inning single from Dom Smith, a third inning single from Patrick Bailey, and a fifth inning double from Tyler Fitzgerald. Another 2-2. Ramos swings and skies it out into center. Straight away, Thomas now moves in a few steps. He’ll make the catch. One gone. I’ll bring up Smith. Top of the seventh, as always, is sponsored by Cash Creek Casino Resort. Ready to elevate your weekend? Experience thrilling gaming action and unmatched luxury at Cash Creek Casino Resort. Your ultimate getaway is just a short drive away. Smith tonight is singled and flyed out to deep right. He spins away from a high and in cutter. All one. Giants who were held to only five runs in the three games over the weekend in Chicago have yet to score today. They have yet to hit a home run on this road trip. Smith breaks his bat, grounds it. Foul just wide of first. Picked up by Smith behind the bag. Even Smith. One ball, one strike. Dom Smith will get some new lumber. It’s the best rivalry in baseball. Get your tickets to the Friday and Sunday games right now at sfgiants.com/tick. Also, check StubHub for tickets to the Saturday game against the Dodgers. One ball, one strike. Pitch to Smith and it’s a called strike two ball over the outer third and now Smith will use his timeout. He he was real hot first handful of games with the Giants. Think many hitters this team. He has cooled off significantly here of late. Just two hits last 18 at bats. Nine in the count here. The one two is low. It’s two balls and two strikes. Left side of the infield around a to pull. Purdomo far up the middle and Suarez the third baseman at the shortstop position. Right side straightaway and the 22. Smith with a foul. I am out of play into the upper deck. Giants who have played more one and two-run games than any team in baseball. And it’s not even close. Another tight one here late. They trail two nothing in the top of the seventh. 2-2 is a line drive. Base hit right between short and third. Out into left center. Tawa cuts it off. Spins. Smith heading for second. The throw is late and offline. Tom Smith slides in with a double. And the Giants have a runner in scoring position now with one out. Billy Adamus coming up. That was a location mistake from Nelson. Belt high fast right down the middle and Tom Smith knew what to do with it even though there wasn’t a lot of room between Purdomo and Suarez on the left side of the infield. He hit hard enough that it got in between him and ended up out left center. Now we’re going to have a Abbis Law of Mound visit as Brian Kaplan, the Dbags pitching coach out now to talk with Nelson. Arizona for the first time tonight is going to get someone up in their bullpin. Mentioned this earlier, but the Deepack’s bullpin has been a major weakness the first half of the season. Arizona has lost eight games in leading after the seventh inning. That is the most of any team. It happened twice over the weekend. Marlins were here those games the Dbacks couldn’t hold an eighth inning lead. Another game they saw Miami come back in the ninth inning. Right now we’re in the seventh. First pitch to Willie Adams and it’s inside a fast ball. One and0.
It’s a big run out there because you’re right, it’s only the seventh. This isn’t the ninth. If you get the one, you get closer to that bullpen as you’re describing. Just important to get on the board here. One pitch and Adam takes a strike. Fighter there over the inner half of the plate. Adamus hit a ball very hard his last time up. And his line drive caught by McCarthy out and right. Struck out in his first atbat. 0 for two for his first hit on the road trip. 1-1 is low. Make it two and one now to Willie Adamis. Seeing more pitches other than the fast ball here in this inning from Nelson. Looks to be getting close to the end of his night. The 2-1. Adam swings, grounds it sharply in the hole. It’s short, diving for Domo. It’s off his glove. Kicks a few feet to his right. He’ll quickly go over and pick it up. Smith has to hold it second. It just didn’t bounce far enough away for Smith to feel like he could move into third. There it is. Willie Adam. More loud contact from him. So the Giants do have another base runner now on at first and second with one out. Jung Hu Lee
as if we needed another emblem of how this is all going for the Giants offense. They get a hit with a runner in scoring position. Not only does it not score a run, it doesn’t even advance the runner. One base unbelievable right now. Another opportunity though here. Jung-hu Lee takes outside. Ball one. Jung-ho bounced into a double play in the second inning. He flyed out in the fifth. He too is looking for his first hit on this road trip. This would be a great time for it. The tying runs are on. The 10 is outside again. Backto back fast balls that missed. Lee into a good hitters count. He’s got a lifetime home run against Ryan Nelson on his fourth career at bats against this Dbacks right-hander. 20. He swings and gets under it. A high fly ball out into medium left center. Over is Thomas. He’ll make the catch. Runners have to hold. He got a pretty good pitch to hit there. fast ball over the plate but couldn’t do anything with it. Now with Tyler Fitzgerald coming up, it’s going to be the Dback’s manager Tory Lavell out to the mound. So that’s going to be it for Ryan Nelson here tonight in Phoenix. And I don’t think Nelson wants to come out of this game. Offace is coming in a brand new format. So they match up with Fitzgerald coming up and get Mario into the game. Giants still trying for that hit to get them on the board. Fitzgerald had some encouraging swings his last time up and hit a double. And we know Tyler Tyler is such a confidentbased player when he starts to get the feeling he can get it going fast. So, here we go. Back from the minor leagues today. Tyler Fitzgerald with runners at first and second, two outs. Giants down two nothing. The pitch. Fitzgerald swings. It’s a drive out into the gap right center. Thomas on the run. He dives and he can’t get it off of his glove. Rolls to the warning track. Smith scores. Adamus right behind him and Hill scores standing. Tyler Fitzgerald, welcome back. A huge hit here in the seventh. The one the Giants have been waiting for. A two out, two-run double and it ties the game at two. Thomas going back. He almost I mean almost made that play. That would have been maybe the catch of the year. Diving on a high backhand. I don’t know how he even got that close to it. And it just ticked right off the end of his glove as Patrick Bailey on the first pitch. Pops it up. Foul ground. Third base side. Suarez over and with room. He’ll make the catch. What do we say? Get into the Dbacks bullpin. First pitch thrown by Murice. Moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921.

Change up down below the zone and it’s 0 and2. Now Logan Webb who has been excellent again here tonight for the Giants try and get his club right back into the dugout. I will call time. Webs at 91 pitches. There’s nobody up right now in the Giants bullpin. O2 that’s way outside a cutter. Web is facing the bottom third of the order here after Tawa. It’ll be Thomas and then Herrera. One two pitch fouled straight back. Backs got a run in the third inning against Web on an error. And then in the sixth, it was a Guriel solo homer. Made it two nothing on two pitch. How a check swing. It was low, dropped by Bailey, but on the appeal ruled a swing by the first base umpire Adrien Johnson. Bailey stepped out, was getting ready to throw the ball down to first. He then realized didn’t need to. Tawa was conceding the out already turned around and was walking back to the dugout and he clearly offered it down. That was almost a full swing. A change up in the dirt. Another strike out for Web. Thomas now swings. Little bloop shallow left center and it will fall. A base hit. Man, Alec Thomas, he is living right here tonight for Arizona. Three for three. He hasn’t hit any of them hard and getting that one to fall in over the head of the Giant shortstop. Willie Adamus. So now there’s some speed on it first. Thomas representing the go-ahead run. One out here in the seventh as Herrera takes a ball high and outside. Jose Herrera, the backup catcher for the Dbacks, but he’s playing a lot more these days. Pitches tie and now it’s 2 and 0. Gabrielle Moreno, another injured Dback and not available right now for this Arizona team. 200 pitch and Herrera a late swing fouls it out of play off the netting beyond the Dbacks dugout was asked to bunt in each of his first two played appearances both times got the bunt down a couple of sacrifices swinging away here the 2-1 the swing ground ball right side diving Fitzgerald it’s out of his reach into right field Johnson up with it as Thomas speeds around second and he’ll make it into third easily. Johnson’s throw bounces past the cut off man and rolls to Logan Webb over near third base. Web frustrated. He got the ground ball that he was looking for there. The catcher running. If that’s just five feet closer to Fitzgerald, that’s an inning ending double play. Instead, Tyler could knock it down on the edge of the outfield grass. And with Thomas’ speed, it’s all the way to third and the go-ahead run 90 ft away as Giants pitching coach JP Martinez out now to talk with Web for a Habis Law mound visit. Well, the last time this guy was up, Peraldo Purdomo was a 10 pitch at bat and Webb ultimately struck him out, but everything down Peromo was on. He he he was able to fight off pitches that were way down. Ended up finally getting him to chase and struck him out. But this this will be interesting. Are getting their bullpin going now as Web. This will be his 100th pitch of the night. Middle infield back. Double play depth. The pitch to Ferdomo. A called strike. Perfect pitch there. A back door slider over the outside corner. Tied at two. Bottom of the seventh. The Dbacks threatening. Runners at first and third. One out. 01. And that’s low and in. Bounced it. In fact, a change up. Wall. One strike. Very good speed at third here with Thomas Elmo going to elevate a ball as he swings and drives it deep down the right field line. A hooking go that had a home run distance as it bounced off the facing above the Giants bullpin and Haram down into the bullpin. But foul by about 30 ft. One ball, two strikes. That would certainly take a strike out here. The pitcho swings, grounds it foul. Was a low change up. He fought it off. Doesn’t matter how low you go right now, Purdomo’s getting the bat on him. And the pitch he almost hit for a home run was down and maybe below the strike zone. That one was way below the strike zone. One of the few everyday players these days with more walks than strikeouts for Domo as he swings. Little bloop that’s going to get over the head of Adamus into shallow left center. A base hit. Thomas will score from third. Herrera stopping at second. And for Domo, it was another pitch below the zone. I mean, that was way down below the knee and he went down and got it. Wasn’t a bad pitch at all from Logan Webb and Peromo flips it out into left center. Arizona reclaims the lead at three-2. That’ll be the end of the night for Logan Web as Giants manager Bob Melvin out to the mound. Frustrating. Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. That’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahead home run in the first New York Mets home game after 911. Hear moments like this and more on the MLB app and MLB.com. He’s having a great year. Lately had a little more traffic against him, but has still just pitched beautifully. A very high standard with Randy Rodriguez right now. He gives up one base runner. It’s like, man, he’s a little off today. He’ll take over and just desperate to keep the Giants down by only the one after they tie the game up. The Diamondbacks an immediate response and their best hitter coming up. You can see why Bob Melvin is using Rodriguez here even with the the lead already or the tie already gone because the Giants are desperate to keep it a 3-2 deficit. And Rodriguez, he should be fresh. Hasn’t pitched since Friday’s road trip opener in Chicago. Throws to Marte. Swings at a slider. Bounces at Weekly Foul for strike one. puts Herrera at second, Purdomo at first. Dbacks back ahead three to2 here in the bottom of the seventh inning. A one pitch. Martes swings. It’s a high fly ball along the right field line. It’s foul and it’ll end up out of play. Hitting high off the netting. Smith Gerald Smith Johnson all game chase. 0 and2 Marte Marte who finished third in the National League MVP voting last year behind Otani and Lindor to make the case he’s been even better this season. There’s one in the dirt and it gets by Bailey all the way to the back stop and the runners will move up. A low and in slider. And what a big play that is. A wild pitch gets Herrera to third and Pommo to second. Not easy to double up Marte anyway, but now there’s two in scoring position. The infield has to come in a strikeout situation. The one-two is fouled straight back. High fast ball at 99. That pitch, I mean, it was down and it was in the dirt and he’s got such nasty break on his slider, but it was right around home plate. Rodriguez comes set. One-two pitch is high. Bailey snap throw to third, but diving back in Herrera. trying to catch a deepback base runner. Napping hit a good throw. Two balls, two strikes. From the stretch delivers and it’s popped up. Not very high in the air right to Fitzgerald at second. Comes in a couple of steps and makes the catch. Big second out here for Randy Rodriguez. Hit Patel Marte. Now he’ll face Paven Smith with a chance to keep it at a one-run deficit. Smith tonight is 0 for three. Couple of ground outs. He struck out swinging his last time. Infield moves back. Smith add batting left-handed. Takes a strike. First pitch slider. Giants tied it on the pitch. Gerald two-run double in the top of the inning. Arizona with a run here in the bottom half. Back ahead. Swing and a foul back. The slider way in on the hands. Smith went after it. It’s 0 and two. Rodriguez get out of this third for Domo. Good speed at second. 02 pitch is a ball. Wow, that was close. They’ll check on the swing. Smith seemed to clearly hold up, but there was a pitch in the strike zone box, but ball to ball by Quinn Walcott. Now the one-two and a cold third strike. Thought Smith might have offered at it anyway. Pitch a back door slider ruled to have caught the outside corner this time and Randy Rodriguez working around the w.

Now back to the orange and black on KN&NBR 1045 and 680. Eighth inning, it’s 3 to2 Dbacks. And once again, here’s Dave. New pitcher Joe is John Curtis who spent most of this year in AAA rightander against Daniel Johnson who swings and misses after the first pitch was called a strike. And Daniel Johnson right away is in an 02 hole. Giants are down three to2. Eighth inning, Johnson. And then the top of the order costs and deavors. Here’s the wind up and the pitch from Curtis. Johnson pulls it on the ground to first. David Smith has it. He’s going to run to the bag and he’ll get there just ahead of Johnson for out number one. So Curtis retires the first batter that he faces. guy
who’s had big league time in the past and a decent amount of it although most of it was concentrated four years ago four or five years ago Twins Angels Rays Marlins Brewers Mets Rockies well traveled he throws a cutter off the outside to Christian CS one and0 is 0 for three he’s due he checks his swing. Did he go? No appeal. That was no swing according to Adrien Johnson. Diamondbacks fans, and there aren’t a ton of them here tonight. 18,963 the attendance not happy with that call. Toss hits a high drive left field going back on the ball. Tawa at the wall. He’ll leap and it is gone. Christian CS and the umpires calling fan interference. CS is rounding the bases. The umpires bringing cost back to second. And this is going to set off a debate and I’m sure a review. The umpires are going to get together and talk about this. A fan apparently reached over the wall and caught it. At least according to the second base umpire, Christian CS, the initial, it was in the bleachers. He tied the game watching the replay for the first time. And I I do think that I mean, the fan definitely reached out, but I don’t think you could tell that he Oh, they’re calling the batter out. No way. Come on. Adrien Johnson is calling cost to out. Tim Tawa was not in a position to catch that ball. They’re going to review it back in New York. I guess they’re calling him out though on the field. Field is interference with an out. San Francisco is challenging that call. Oh my goodness. So, home run to double to now fan interference with an an out. I mean, the umpire is allowed to make the judgment call that the fielder would have caught it. The Diamondbacks fan wearing a glove did reach out. Tawa leaped up at the top of the wall and there’s no way you could say that he would have caught it. No way. So at worst the umpires of New York, you cannot make the the decision that that would have been a catch. He did not interfere with Tawa catching the ball. You could debate whether the ball was going over the wall or not. But and the Giants dugout is going nuts over there and I don’t blame him. There’s no way that that was interference for an out. Replay challenge sponsored by Putnham Family dealerships. Car shopping driven by you. I think it should be a home run because I don’t know that you could tell that the ball was not going to go over the wall. The fan just reached out to the side and caught the ball right on top of the wall. That’s a home run. He then leaned over. He lost his balance after the ball was in his glove, the fan, and leaned over the wall. So, it kind of made it look like he caught it below the level of the wall. That should be a home run. I mean, that’s it’s absurd to think that that would be an out. And I don’t know if Adrien Johnson just just made that up in his mind or what. Why did he decide to call that an out? Well, that’s why we have reviews. And if it doesn’t get reversed to at least a double, you’re going to have many people in that Giants dugout that are just going to lose them. There going to be people ejected if if if the call isn’t at least an extra base hit, but I that should be a home run. The replay umpires Dana and Alfonso Marquez are the crew chiefs back in New York. I mean, this is admittedly not an easy one, but it just flat out absurd that it was called an out after a discussion like somehow you saw that watching the replay. the glove of Tawa. The ball went right over his glove and only after it passed his glove did it get to the fan who was reaching out on the top of the wall. So they’re still looking at it in New York. The run is off the board. 3-2 is still officially the score. Diamondbacks leading the Giants, but I in my opinion that should be a home run. Christian cause because I I think at worst it’s going to hit the top of the wall. Adrien Johnson is going to make the call here.
Have to review. Call on the field is overturned. There was interference. However, during the review, it was ruled that the ball would not have left the ballpark. The battle runner is awarded second base. San Francisco will return for challenge. So CS is at second. So the call is overturned. I And I guess it’s that’s a hard call. It’s hard to be real tough on they’re they’re taking Christian CS out of the game for Brett Wisley. I didn’t even think Wisley’s faster than Christian CS. That that just perplexes me. Why? Why are they taking CS has been the Giants’s best player all week and he’s out of the game now. De stands in. He is the tying run wisely. And Devers fouls one straight back over top us. Strike one. First pitch cutter from Curtis. And Christian C. I I think the fans stole a home run from him. I guess it’s possible. Maybe. I think I caus something happened to CS while he was running the bases. Here’s the pitch that that I mean that I don’t think there’s any way Bob Melvin would have done that without that. So gosh, now we have to hope that costs is okay whether it was a cramp or something worse than that. Ow and two to de takes up high. So the Giants get a couple cracks here to tie this game or more with the heart of the order which these guys have had such a hard time tonight. Desvers and Ramos. One and two. Wisely leads away from second. Here’s the pitch. Way outside. Not close. Two and two. After all that, the review fan interference created the double. Not the home run. I don’t know about that one. Two and two to Devils. Now he steps off. Curtis does. Well, these next couple of hitters for the Giants are going to determine whether we’re talking about that play for days or if it can just all kind of be forgotten. You
get the run home, it it stings a lot less. The pitch de strikes out swinging. Man, Rafie Des may never have had a game like this. 0 for four, four strikeouts, all swinging. And Devers just can’t believe it. Another fast ball up and he swung right underneath it. But now Ramos and the catcher Herrera’s coming out to talk to Curtis. Elliot’s had a hard time tonight. He’s 0 for three with two swinging strikeouts. He’s also flyed out to center field. I think after the flyyou he broke his bat on purpose. He didn’t break it on the swing. He was so frustrated. Now, is that Tory Lavell the manager coming out? So, just a stall tactic to get somebody else ready. They didn’t like the Curtis versus Ramos matchup apparently. So, a different right-hander is warming up and the Diamondbacks are making a change, but it’s time for a change. Think Speedy oil change and auto service. Trouble light on. We can fix that. It looks like it’s Shelby Miller. So maybe just because now two outs, they’re willing to go to the guy who’s been their closer.
It’s a great night for baseball.

Miller hasn’t been immune to that. 37 strikeouts to only 11 walks in his 33 innings pitched. This splitter has been his best pitch this year. Very difficult to hit. We’ll see how he’ll attack Elliot Ramos with the possible tying run at second. Two down here in the eighth inning. So Ramos, who’s had so many big hits for the Giants this year and a lot of them late in games. Ramos has been one of the very best Giants in spots like this. Eisley the runner at second. Toss out of the game with something going on with a leg or whatever. Ramos takes a strike, a splitter. He threw that one in the strike zone. It’s 0 and one. Dom Smith would be next. Here’s the set by Miller and the pitch. Ramos fouls it back out of play. We got a shot of CS. He’s not Christian CS has not gone back into the locker room. He’s still in the dugout and he’s leaning against the top rail. He He doesn’t look real happy, but you would figure if something really were wrong and I think it’s a good sign at least that he’s still there. 0 and two to Ramos. Got a battle now against Miller. Here’s the pitch. Ramos takes a ball just high. Good fast ball. One and two. Diamondbacks three. Giants two. Eighth inning. Here’s the pitch off the outside. No. Called strike three. Oh my goodness. That was not a strike. Ramos took it and a delayed strike call by Quinn Walai. So, the Giants don’t score that run. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Just say play KNBR. Tyler Rogers takes over on the mound here for the Giants. Bottom eight, trying to keep this a one-run deficit. Another night of just extraordinary frustration for the Giants in many different ways. The pitch to Suarez is a called strike. Tyler on for the 42nd time. A 160 RA. He’s having an excellent year. Buriel on deck. The pitch. Suarez hits a high-fly ball deep left field. Ramos back at the wall and it is gone. Heyo Suarez the second home run of the night for the Diamondbacks. And now the Giants are down four to2. His 26th home run of the year. And it does not happen very often to Tyler Rogers. That is the third home run that Rogers has given up. I mean, he did throw a pitch right down the middle. Even so, that just almost never happened. So, the Giants now down two again. It was two nothing Diamondbacks. Giants tied it at two. Dbacks went ahead. Now, Guriel lights one to left. Ramos over to his left and he’ll catch it. Wow, that was hit harder than the home run ball. It felt like home run ball was hit 95 miles an hour. I don’t know what’s going on the last couple of years here in Arizona. The ball didn’t travel. Tonight, the ball’s just flying. Ariel hit his 108. the pitch. McCarthy chops it softly towards second, charging Fitzgerald. He’ll flip quickly underhand to first for the out. Two down. It’s only one game, one night, but man, it feels like the ball is carrying so much better here than it did at any point in the last few years here in Arizona. are now down two, down to their final three outs. Bullpen empty for the Dbacks. There’s Tim Tawa against Rogers and a strike at the knees. A sinker. It’s 0 and one. Even the Giants bullpen, which has been the bedrock of this team, has had a rough week or two. The pitch swing and a miss. Strike two. Home run big here. Extra run. The pitch all the way. Giants have the uh special going. You get a beer with the purchase of a ticket to any July home game. Special Giants tickets against Phillies Dodgers Mets Pirates include a Coors Light, summer bruise and baseball tickets starting at 15 bucks must be 21 or over. Tawa hits another foul. sfgiants.com/beer. We had a interesting moment. The Giants kind of huddled in the dugout around one of those iPads, the the league approved iPads and I think they were watching the strike three called against Ramos. Another foul. Tawa sprays one down the first base side. Still 0 and two. And it was coaches, players, and they saw that the pitch to Ramos was not a strike. And you can imagine the reaction when they they confirm that. Now a slider up and away. One and two. They’re really not allowed to take that info and argue with an umpire, even really mention it. Umpires are sensitive about that. Here’s a slider up and away. Two and two. But the Giants feeling, I think, picked on right now. The pitch. Tawa drives it to center field going back Lee. And now he’ll come in a step or two. Make the catch. Out number three. But an extra run feels huge. The way things are going. The solo home run. Four to2. Giants have Dom Smith, Adamus, and Jung Hu Lee coming up. Diamondbacks with the two-run lead. We go to the ninth on the KMBBR. Northern California.

Well, in between innings, Bob Melvin just got thrown out of the game and he was hot. Came out and screaming at Quinn Walcott. We go to the ninth inning. Giants are down four to2. Dom Smith against Shelby Miller who pitches and a fast ball for a called strike on the inside. Giants need some magic here in the ninth and maybe their manager trying to provide a little extra spark. Bob Melvin, you can understand the frustration that has been building up. 0 and one Smith swings and misses. And I think, you know, part of it is the Giants had a home run taken away. Fan interference and they thought they had tied the game up and it got taken off the board and ruled a double. Thought should have been a home run. Close call, but not. It didn’t go the Giants way, but I think Bob was thrown out because of the strike three call to Elliot Ramos. Ow. And two to Dom Smith. He takes in the dirt. A splitter bounces in front of home plate. One and two. Well, you got to try to put some pressure on the Diamondbacks here. Smith has had a nice game. He’s two for three. A single, a double, a run scored, and a line out. Here’s the pitch. Call strike three. Close pitch and it goes the Diamondback’s way again. Bob Melvin somewhere in the Giants clubhouse is going to be unhappy about that one. The pitch to Ramos was just a blatant ball. It wasn’t close to the target. The catcher lunged across the plate. It wasn’t framed properly and it was a terrible call and he called him out and it ended the Giants threat. The the tying run was in scoring position. Adamus takes inside for Miller. Ball one. And that’s the play that got Bob Melvin thrown out of the game. Giants down to their final two outs, trailing four to two. Jung Hu Lee waiting to hit next. Adamus takes and that one called a strike borderline. One and one have lost five of six and in danger of losing six of seven. Adamus hits one very softly to the right side. Smith fields and flips to Miller covering. Two down. Now the Giants are down to their final out. We’ll pause quickly here for station ID on the K&BR Northern California Honda dealers radio network. Game is over.
Hear the postgame rap with John Dave Krook and Kitebr San Francisco. So Jung Hulie trying to give Tyler Fitzgerald a chance to keep the game going. Two down in the ninth. Giants are down by two runs. Lee 0 for three. He takes outside ball one. First pitch fast ball. Lee’s getting almost nothing but pitches outside these days. Just a onetrack deal against Jung Hu Lee. And he’s got to be able to beat those pitches. The one takes that one off the inside as soon as I say that. I don’t think that was by design though. All two. Four to two. Diamondbacks ninth inning, two down, bases empty. Here’s the pitch on the way. That is a called strike on the inside. Two and one. I mean, Suarez is giving Jung Hu Lee a bunt. If if Lee Bunts, it’s a hit. He’s way back at third. To me, that’s a good play. You’re down two runs. Here’s the 2-1. He hits a highf fly ball to center field. Thomas back. He’ll square up short of the warning track, make the catch, and the game’s over. Now, the frustration is boiling over for the Giants. And if it was if it was palpable before, it feels even worse now. A game where it felt like everything went against them. And they fall short to lose their third game in a row and their sixth game in their last seven. Knights fall four-2 now. And uh it all kind of came to a head there in that eighth inning where for a moment you think Christian C has tied the game with a home run. Then he gets called out and then after the long review they determined with the interference they put him back at second. Uh and then you get a a very questionable strike three call to end an inning. You get your manager thrown out and it’s just kind of how it’s going right now for this team and you you got to find a way to get through it.
Yeah, it definitely feels like it’s a suffocating feeling right here and you’re seeing it in all and all of them and you know the pressure mounts up. Uh hitting is contagious and so is kind of you know everyone goes cold all at once. So yeah, I’m interested to hear kind of y’all’s thoughts over here in our broadcast booth. We thought it was a double, but it sounds like y’all thought maybe that was a home run. It’s debatable. Did you see it differently than we saw it here, Dave?
I thought it was a home run. I thought he it pro very well could have hit the top of the fence or maybe gone. I It just the whole thing just kind of ticks me off.
They got a few bloops here and there and then Suarez hits one and and just kind of wears you out. It really does. And I mean, it wears us out. You can imagine what it’s like for the guys in uniform.
Yeah.
I mean, Webb pitched great.
He pitched way better than three runs would indicate. Way better than that.
I mean, Alec Thomas, give him credit. He puts the ball in play, but it, you know, it’d be nice maybe if you hit the ball over 78 exit velocity. three for three with a bunch of chicken dumpling, chicken nugget, chicken tenders.
