and the biggest need he actually addresses Plus plus what comes next i’ve been asked this question a million times So we’re going to go over the implications of the Taius J signing We’ll get to that FanDuel Right now new customers can get $150 in bonus bets when your first $ five bet wins Two pieces of information before we dive into today’s episode Um I don’t want to ignore uh the the big news that hasn’t happened yet and I want to assure everyone that that there shouldn’t be an issue Uh I have been saying pretty much since last July that the first thing we would probably hear on July 1st 2025 is that Paulo Bankro was signed a max extension Um that has not happened yet Um that has not been reported That has not happened Um and there are a few fans that were a little freaked out about that And so I I want to start on a somber note then Um if you follow Palibaino on his social media feeds uh appar there there was apparently a death in the family Um apparently his a his aunt uh passed away uh recently Um and so I want to start by you know contract stuff doesn’t matter in that at that at that point Um I want to start by uh wishing the V Carol family and and everyone who know knows him and knows his family um my condolences a as well as always the message may your may her memory be a blessing Um as as as the Jewish tradition goes Um this is a fair reason not to be worried about contract negotiations or anything like that Um from a basketball perspective it’s going to get done Um but obviously being with family far more important Mine’s not there and and I’m wishing the Vancero family uh all all the best and and hoping that the Bankroll family is is grieving and celebrating her life as as as they should Um somber note to start but I know that’s been something that people have asked me and that’s been something that people have been a little worried about I don’t think it’s a concern The deal is going to get done Um it’s just not they got time They got till October It’s not there’s no rush to do it It it’s it’s going to get done But we’ll address that We’ll address that contract when it happens because it’s going to happen Um I just want to note that off the top of the show because that was a news item we were expecting today and it has not happened yet We were shifting gears expecting the Magic to be active in free agency Um Jeff Welman has very much telegraphed that he is going to be aggressive that he is still going to be aggressive looking to add to this team And that is what the Magic did Signing Titus Jones to a one-year $7 million contract The Orlando Magic have got their point guard They’ve got their stabilizer They’ve got their game manager They’ve got their just solid veteran to bring off the bench They’ve got a yes capable score Tyro is someone that Magic fans have been after for a very very long time And and and we’ll address what he brings to the team here in a minute He’s been someone Magic fans have been after for a very very long time In fact and and I I apologize for not getting this up sooner Um but I hope my tweet uh kept you go kept you going through the night here Um in fact last January January 2024 I did a little trade deadline tour when we thought the Magic were going to be active at the deadline and that included talking to lockdown wizards about Taius Jones That’s how long he has been on the radar I have done episodes on Taius Jones and the Magic didn’t go grab him It got to the point where I was just like maybe Taius Jones isn’t the fit for them And kind of like Anthony Simons I was telling people like look if the Magic wanted Taius Jones on the team he’d be on the team already And there are shortcomings there are defensive shortcomings to worry about although he largely holds his own defensively Just don’t lean on him too much He’s sort of like a he’s sort of like a Mo Vagner in that sense And we’ll talk about Mo in a little bit Jones last year had an up and down season Averaged 10.2 points per game Second year in his career by the way he’s averaged more than 10 points per game um never really claimed the starting job He started only 58 games Didn’t really help Phoenix kind of figure out their point guard issues as the starter But despite playing fewer minutes despite coming off the bench he still posted 5.3 assists per game shot 41.4% from three on five three-point attempts per game And through it all he remains a really efficient low mistake player 1.1 turnovers per game That is a careerhigh and only the second season he’s ever averaged one turnover per game or more We’re going to get to the three-point shooting because that’s obviously a big factor in this and I want to talk to more generally about how the Magic have improved their three-point shooting But the biggest thing that Taius Jones is going to bring to the Magic is this efficiency is being able to help the team reduce its turnovers and just manage the game a little bit better three-point shooting is an undeniable need And again we’re going to I’m going to talk more in depth about the three-point shooting that the Magic have added this off seasonason But the big takeaway from the Taius Jones signing to me is not only did the Magic add a super efficient three-point shooter the Magic added a player who does not make mistakes who is not going to harm the offense who is not going to get dinged who is not going to make the kind of silly mistakes frankly that the Magic often make Last season Last season the Magic finished 20th at turnover rate at 14.7% That was an improvement over 2024 I want to remind everybody turnovers were a big problem And and honestly I would argue that part of the shooting issue is the passing issue The Magic aren’t a super precise pass team They’re not a super high pass team And this affects shooting Not getting the ball in the right spot in the shooters shooters pocket having to fumble the ball All this stuff matters And again there are a lot of factors They’re not necessarily things that you can count There’s not stats There’s it’s just something you watch The Magic are a inopportune turnover team They got better as the season went on and part of that is yeah Cory Joseph helped In the last 18 games the Magic were 13th in the league in turnover rate at 13.6% You saw what that did not only to the Magic’s offense but to the Magic’s three-point field goal percentage You get more bites at the apple You guarantee a shot on every possession That matters And so if Taius Jones just you know at $7 million you hope he does a little bit more But if Taius Jones just does what Corey Joseph did last year we can already see the Magic are a better team They went 12-6 over those last 18 games with Cory Joseph largely as the starter A 667 win percentage over 82 games is 55 wins The Magic over the last month and a half of the season played like a 55 win team And yeah 18 games that’s about a quarter of a season A little bit less than a quarter of a season It’s got to expand It’s got to be more stable You got to do it over 82 to be the team the Magic want to be But even last year’s team with all the injuries and everything else that happened still had some brilliant moments and adding a player like Tus Jones who isn’t going to make mistakes who isn’t going to turn the ball over who’s going to boost the offense and stabilize it when he is in the game That’s a big thing that the Magic needed to address That’s why like for all of his flaws and shortcomings Corey Joseph was so vital to the team last year he just stabilized them in a time of instability Obviously though the big thing that Taius Jones addresses Jones addresses and the biggest thing that we can measure is three-point shooting because the Magic have transformed themselves into a better three-point shooting team this summer We’ll break down those numbers and what comes next coming up here in just a moment But first today’s episode of Lockdown Magic is brought to our friends over at FanDuel Summer Sports are in full swing Part of the reason why I’m recording this late is I stayed up to watch the Man City all halal game in the FIFA Club World Cup Wild game Way to go All hilal Take taking down taking down Man City No one likes those those blue blue people anyway Wrong shade of blue Um really really fun game and it’s a little emotionally spent I’m you If you’re new to FanDuel new customers can bet just $5 and get $150 in bonus bets if your first bet wins Open the FanDuel app today or visit fanuel.com to get started The easy headline of course when it comes to adding a player like Tus Jones is the shooting I mentioned it Shot 41% from three last year on five attempts per game This is a guy who is going to make 41.4% on five three-point attempts per game And that that’s down obviously because he’s coming off the bench And this is about the production I would expect from Taius Jones You know like look Tus Jones is not starting The Magic starting lineup is set Jaylen Suggs Desmond Bane uh Fron Vagner Paliban Carol Wendell Carter Taius Jones is coming off the bench And we’ll dive into depth chart issues and what that means for Jace Richardson and what that means for the Magic’s bench And and we’ll talk especially about where the Magic go next I hit that in the last segment of today’s show Um Titus Jones is going to help this team shoot very very clearly and that of course is a big theme for the entire off season Obviously Orlando finished last in three-point field goal percentage We were extremely frustrated because good shooters that we know are good shooters just missed It became a an epidemic on the team I fully expect you know people are going to hate me for saying this and and the Magic got better and this deal I probably would have made even if KCP was playing well Kavius Clo Pope is going to shoot better in Memphis He will not have another year like he had last year Some of it was probably just a little bit of a bad fit with the Magic and their style and what they’re trying to do And some of it was just like bad year It happens The Magic undoubtedly got better um they got better over even a good KCP season because Desmond Bane can create his own shot He is an assist guy He can he averages averaged more than five assists per game in the last few years The Magic feel should feel comfortable running stuff with him on the ball just as much as they’re comfortable running stuff with him off the ball But it can’t go without saying how much of a transformation this offense could be Let’s just look at the numbers from last year Last year Desmond Bane shot 42.3% on 2.6 catch and shoot three-point attempts per game According to Second Spectrum Taius Jones shot 43% on four catch and shoot three-point attempts per game I mentioned he only averaged five so most of his threes were catching shoots off kickouts 43% on four catch-and shoot three-point attempts per game according to data from Second Spectrum Both of those marks would lead the Orlando Magic because no player on the Magic shot better than 40% from on catch and shoot threes The only guy who did was Caleb Houston One of the reasons why I think the Magic should make returning Caleb Houston a priority We’ll see if that happens It’s it’s it’s it’s not looking great Then you add in that the Magic added Jace Richardson Jace Richardson Frankly signing Taius Jones is going to be as much about teaching Jace Richardson as possible because Jeff Welman said this at his press conference that Jace Richardson is a low mistake player Tus Jace Richardson the Magic want Jacece Richardson to be a more athletic Taius Jones and so he’s gonna learn a lot from playing bes beside behind alongside Taius Jones but in college and granted it’s college Chase Richardson shot 41.2% on 3.23 three-point field goal attempts per game I’ve been a big guy on this Jaylen Suggs ended up shooting like 34% on his catch and shoot threes In the five games before Paulo’s injury on like six attempts per game he was above he was above 45% He was like 46 47% on catch and shoot threes The point is this We all wanted the Magic to address their three-point shooting We all wanted the Magic to make a statement to make sure that they had three-point shooting that they did not let last year stand And yes the Magic are going to need some internal improvement Wendell Carter’s got to shoot better Fron Vagner’s got to shoot better Paulo Ban Carro’s got to shoot better But the idea is the Magic now have legitimate shooting on their team Not just one shooter They didn’t just add one shooter like they did last year and hope for the best They added two elite shooters to their team They added one of the best shooters in the draft And again it’s the draft You never really know And they’re young enough that all their players should get better And they’re going to bring back one of their best shooters in an environment that will enable him to shoot I’m not going to sit here and tell you the Magic are gonna have a top 10 offense I I I it’s going to take I have to see it to believe it But freezing cold take me again This is going to be the year they get out of the bottom 10 This is the year that I think they’ll flirt with being a top half of the league offense And if the defense holds and look Tyus Jones doesn’t have a good defensive reputation I I he Tyus Jones is very much like Mo Vagner where he racks up stats He’s really really good at what he’s good at but he has shortcomings that prevent him from playing extended minutes Um he has he has issu you know size issues just defensive issues that you don’t want him starting for very long because of because of these shortcomings And certainly in the playoffs he’ll get targeted a little bit So when you measure his minutes when you kind of get the just the right amount you get a lot out of him Um and look a bench group of Taius Jones Anthony Black Fran Vagner Jonathan Isaac Mo Vagner not as much offense as maybe you want but that’s a solid group Maybe you go Tyus Jones Desmond Bane France Vagner Jonathan Isaac Wendo Cargo Movagner You got something there You’re working with something there The Magic don’t need to go 10 deep and assuming they’re healthy they should have one or two of their top four guys on the floor at all times that honestly the minutes where there’s only one should be pretty limited I I think the Magic will run a rotation once they figure out if there’s a if there’s like a successful pairing If like Paulo and Jaylen Suggs are really good pairing don’t split them up If Fron and Bane really really work well together don’t split them up Why um we’ll be it’ll be interesting to see how it all works out And I think Taius Jones will help Fron I think Taius Jones will help Paulo You know it it’ll all it’ll all all help each other but the Magic have really addressed their shooting They they went out and got one of the best shooters in the league They signed one of the best shooters in free agency They drafted one of the best shooters in the draft And it’s on the players now to execute It’s on the coaches now to set up a system that lets their players shoot that gets their players into shooting spots and into areas where they can make baskets The biggest question I got though is what does this trade what does this acquisition do for the rest of the Magic’s off season that is a very very tricky question a question that I’ve had to explain several several times So what happens with Mov we’ll talk about the next steps for the Orlando Magic coming up here in just a moment Let’s start with the basic information If you look if you’re watching on YouTube and see on the rundown it says magic to sign Taius Jones A friendly reminder none of these deals that are being reported are official They’re allowed to negotiate and agree to deals during the moratorum but nobody signs anything until July 6th So if you’re listening to this on July 5th if you’re listening to this July 4th happy Independence Day If you’re listening to this before the moratorum ends information is going to change quickly and the magic have some work to do the magic by signing Taius Jones to a $7 million contract or what’s being reported as a $7 million contract um means that they are using a non- taxpayer mid-level exception And I have warned about this I have I’ve made sure to try and stress this as much as I can It’s been a little hard for people because salary cap rules and CBA rules are very very very very confusing by using the non-t taxpayer mid-le exception The magic are now hardcapped at the first eight Um like I did yesterday I I I’m going to do back of napkin math I’ll give you the exact number at least as as far as we’ve all calculated it Um but I want to do back and napkin math to keep it simple and and straightforward for everybody Um but the magic are hardcapped at the first A hard cap is a hard cap There are no exceptions to the hard cap There are there you cannot exceed the hard cap for any reason Otherwise you wouldn’t be allowed to use this tool The NBA is not letting you work around using bird rights exceptions Now everyone who has talked to me about this is absolutely right The bird right exception is an exception to the salary cap that allows a team to resign their own players that one in the salary cap was created or when some of the new salary cap rules were made the Celtics were worried about like well we can’t resign Larry Bird or keep our championship cord together You don’t want us to break up our championship cord do you and so they created what’s called bird rights Um essentially to allow teams to resign their own stars without facing without facing any penalty or or being allowed to exceed the cap to sign their own players The Magic own bird rights on Mo Vager and Caleb Houston So the Magic are able to resign their own players even though they are over the salary cap Like I mentioned though the hard cap has no exceptions So the Magic are hardcapped at the first apron once they sign Taius Jones Of note two the order of operations matters in some signings It does not matter here You cannot use either mid-level exception If using the mid-level exception takes you over the first apron the taxpayer mid-le exception hard caps you at the second apron it’s a smaller amount It’s 5.7 million Um the Magic are paying $7 million for Tus Jones They’re using the non-t taxpayer middle-le exception hard capped at the first apron Now we’ve all done the math I’ve done the math here but let’s just review This is all back of napkin I’m using whole figures just to kind of illustrate where we’re at When the Magic declined the team options to Mo Vagner and Caleb Houston they were about $18 million under the first April Obviously you have $14.1 million uh uh non-taxpayer mid-le exception and gave them some wiggle room there Jace Richardson and his contract will be about $3 million a little bit less than $3 million And no appenda and his contract will be a little bit less than $2 million So again we’re going to knock $5 million off that We’re just going to be straight numbers here Just make it easy So the magic are about $13 million under their first eight That means they didn’t have full access to the NTML They couldn’t use the whole thing Tus Jones signed for $7 million That’s half of that amount And so that leaves the magic about $6 million under the first apron Now the actual number the math that people have actually done is the magic are $6.7 million under the first apron They have two roster spots remaining They cannot spend more on any player than $6.7 million Um that is the reality of where the Magic are financially and where the Magic are under the CBA rules And even during the season by the way the Magic cannot exceed the first eight So if there’s a trade that adds salary so the Magic are not an apron team this year Let’s make that really really clear They’re not an apron team They can still technically bring in more money than they send out They’re they’re not subject to some of the restrictions under the first apron Um which we talked a little bit about There’ll be a second apron team next year It’s there’s there’s a lot to happen Um so the Magic are not an apron team They cannot become one through a trade And again uh as Keith Smith pointed out to us on the episode earlier this this month um apron rules take effect based on what happens after the transaction So if the Magic did make a trade that took in more salary than they sent out they’d still have to be under the First Apron because if you’re over the First Apron you can’t do that deal Um so you know the Magic are the Magic aren’t a First Apron team but they kind of are regardless The Magic cannot exceed the First Apron under any circumstances And that leaves very little room for Mo Vagner A lot of us when we saw this deal came down thought and believed a trade had to be in the works Now a trade would be tricky because either the magic of taking in much less salary and and maybe like dumping Jet Howard which is what $45 million if they give me some time to stall I can find that for you Um maybe the Magic are getting set to make a trade to to dump some salary to get further under so they can get Mover the salary that he wants Um Jet Howard is five and a half million dollars So if you dip under there that’s $12 million under that would enable you to sign Moager and then maybe sign another player to to help out to to just kind of boost the team a little bit It feels like the Magic do have a trade in them to get get further under the t get further under the apron and give themselves a little bit of wiggle room Um all indications both Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press as well as Jason Bey of the Orlando Sentinel do believe that Mo Vagner is going to return to the Orlando Magic I believe a they’re good friends Um but B I believe them too Um there is zero indication that Mo Vagner will not be back with the Orlando Magic It’s just about how much is he going to get paid how do they make that work under these restrictions because again like it’s very restrictive They’re very very tight Typically teams that get hardcaped like this are not this tight to the apron You look at like what the Atlanta Hawks have done The Atlanta Hawks are using a massive trade exception to acquire Duel Alexander Walker in a sight and trade deal and then using their non-tax pyramid level exception to sign Luke Canard um they have that room because they are not over the they’re they’re over the over the cap but not over the tax They they still had room under the tax to make those massive moves Um the Magic do not have that room The Magic do the Magic did not have the ability to be that aggressive to absorb players in that way They had to think we got this one tool to use They they only had the mid-level exception to use this off seasonason And again they added a big player to trade They they traded they traded away a lot to get Desmond Bay but the Magic Ob the Magic still have work to do They’ve got two roster spots open Um they’re required to fill one if I’m not mistaken Um they’ve got two roster spots open and only $6.7 million to to fill it Obviously Mo Vagner is the priority as he should be Um and now it’s about figuring out how do you get to the amount that Mo Vagner wants or that Mo Vagner will agree to If I’m Mo Vagner I’m not taking a pay cut in half I’m not going to to $6.7 million after I was paid 11 after I know how valuable I am to this team Even if I’m still recovering from from an injury yeah I might take a little bit of a haircut 89 million seems reasonable Um but the Magic the Magic have to get to that number There might be interest on both sides but the Magic have to get to that number So it does feel like the Magic will make a minor trade a a salary dump of Jet Howard You know even Jet Howard with a second for a fake second for like a top 55 protected second That’s just doing business That’s just the business you have to do And the Magics still have a treasure trove of second round picks again they can protect that thing like crazy They’ll they’ll they’ll find a way to get something done They’ll find somewhere to park that I I don’t think they will stretch Jed Howard’s contract Um that would be dead money when you’re a Second Apron team is probably not a good idea Um but they have tools they can use And and stretching by the way just means you take the remaining salary uh the remaining salary on a player’s contract and stretch it over a certain number of years So for a one-year deal $5.5 billion over one year Um you stretch you double it You um double it and then add one So one year would be two plus one So you’d stretch that $5.5 million over three years you know you reduce that cap hit pretty heavily Um um but it’s dead money It’s it’s money you can’t do anything with You can’t trade it You can’t do it It’s just got to sit there um Jet Howard haunting the scene for three years you know may not be the best idea especially with how you know a million dollars here and there could could be the difference between a massive tax bill and and a small tax bill Um just something to consider something to to realize Um that is a tool in the quiver Um it it it will be interesting It will be interesting to see how the Magic get this done because they will they’re gonna keep Movonger That’s going to happen But the Magic still I think have some work to do to build this roster out they still have some needs to address If they could find somewhere to dump Jed Howard and and get a get a small player back in return someone for the end of their bench uh as well as those cap savings that would be a huge victory and get and get get things done But again we I previewed this all summer long The Magic are facing some pretty severe restrictions here They’re facing some pretty severe uh things that they have to to worry about and get get through But the Magic got their guy Um we we suspected Tus Jones was a pretty heavy target once it was clear the Magic would be able to spend the full tax non-t taxpayer mid-level exception They got their guy They got better They added a player who’s going to be a big boost to this team’s offense in several ways Their shooting got better The Magic got better on Monday and we’ll see where they go next But that’s going to do it for me today I want to thank you all again for listening to today’s episode of Lockdown The Orlando Magic made their move, agreeing to a deal with Tyus Jones. The veteran point guard is someone Magic fans have had their eye on for several years for his stability and playmaking.
Jones should help transform the Magic’s offense with his passing and efficiency. He is another strong shooter the team has added to help solve its long-standing shooting issues.
Will Tyus Jones be the catalyst for Orlando’s offensive transformation?
And what comes next for the Magic? With a one-year, $7 million deal, the Magic have triggered a hard cap at the first apron and created a tight restriction at the first apron and gives them precious little room to sign Moe Wagner.

I am indeed locked on Magic!!!
Tyus Jett and Goga… over 20 mil not in playoff rotation.
I think Jett need some time when he has the ball in his hands he seem to have a quicker decision with the ball than Anthony black. I think should at least let him play out his rookie contract. I believe he will be one those serviceable bench players people always talk about that comes of the bench
Come to the point 🎉what kind of contract can moe Wagner get ?
Wendell, JI, or Goga gotta go.
all i care about right now is that they bring back Moe.
banchero contract: 😴😴
moe wag contract: 🔫😡📋✍️
I was hoping for ty Jerome but I'm happy with this signing
If we could just stay healthy we'll be a top 5 team in the league
I imagine we got him cheaper this year than we would have gotten him last year
this is most definitely illegal but can’t mo take a pay cut and franz just give him let’s say 3 million since they are brothers and all
Why jet Howard ? Why not WCJ or Issac ? Don’t the team need shooting and besides Howard shows flashes of potential.
