all right we’ll be back to get this one started after this so just about set now starting on the mound in this one Spencer Strider chris he’s got the ability to take control of a game when he’s out there
well incredible mound presence and he’s going to attack hitters you look at that strikeout per nine ratio over 10 coming into this start so he’s a pitcher that wants the ball he’s aggressive he knows that he can get the swing and miss especially when he needs it most we’ll see how effective he is in this one
luis Renifo gets a chance to hit here that’s off the inside corner and we’re underway fouled off left side and a pitch just missed was good pitch there really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge and that’s what it was if you swing at it broken back as you drive back to the dugout still two and two after the foul ball and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up
swinging a ground ball to first one up one down all right let’s take a look at the Angels lot
singing this righty heavy lineup is a bit unusual against a right-handed pitcher
yeah Boo certainly bucks the old conventional wisdom and I’m not sure I see the vision from the manager on this one you’re not exactly putting your players in the best situation to succeed when you roll out a lineup like this maybe they’ve seen something on video that tells them there’s a weakness to exploit perhaps that’s it
come on Spencer nolan Showwell in the box with one away as he takes ball one foul ball popped up and that drops foul and he chases that one and now two gone oh there he gets the slider in on his hands and it just eats him up you know it’s hard to get the bat around on a pitch like that in tight you just feel like you’re crowded on the inside part of the plate can’t get any extension that’s one he definitely should have laid off of
taylor Ward stands in with two away as he takes a ball two out space is empty close one doesn’t get the call and that’s ball two late on that fast ball good fast ball going early until they show they can make some good contact you keep on throwing the pitch that one finds the zone and the count is even two and two good job to fight that one off strider deals and down on strikes and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one two three angels held in check and now the Braves will get their first crack at it no score back after this on the show back here in Atlanta today’s starting pitcher Jack Kachanowitz and Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him
yeah and you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road sometimes you know it’s just a matter of luck it’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field don’t know what it is but I know this he’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home so we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one
ronald Akuna Jr leading things off and takes a strike that’s in there and the count is 0 and two
well as a hitter you’re hoping that the command on that sinker doesn’t come until later in the ball game but if that’s how it’s going to be all day it’s going to be a tough one for the offense swinging a miss that one in the dirt got him one away on the strike out you hear people talk about letting the ball travel so often in terms of a hitting approach and that’s a great example why right there if he’s willing to let that curveball get a little deeper into the zone before he commits he’s way more likely to recognize that it’s making a beline for the dirt on the other side still a nice two- strike pitch though and that one hammered way back there and it’s out of here the Braves score first it’s one- nothing he absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer and you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat he’s that confident it’s like he’s playing whipple ball up there and that’s typically not the easiest way to hit a home run it’s the slight opposite field into the gap making it look easy that’s for sure base is empty one away so here’s the Braves designated hitter Marcelo Zuna swing and that ball smashed on the line ward balls it in two away here’s Atlanta Braves lineup
and Chris this group has been struggling to put up runs lately well they haven’t been on base a ton and even when they are they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base so they need a player or two to really step up have some quality at bats hit according to the situation and sort of break out of this i think if they do the rest of this lineup will follow austin Riley in the box here lets that one go for a ball nowadays with advanced metrics and increased use of moving the infielders around defense isn’t necessarily about making errors are you able to get to the ball are you able to position fielders where guys hit the ball but within the new shift rules that is it
anytime you rip a line drive the other way you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it that’s great work right there

the designated hitter Logan and next for the Angels Logan Ohappy he set a new career high in home runs this year and Sigy he’s just trying to set the bar as high as possible now and a first pitch fast is in for a strike looks like a really good fast ball today you can hear that catcher mitt popping looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one oh one he never moved cuz he never had time to but that kind of velocity you’d prefer that pitcher work away one down base is empty and a swing to miss love to see it power versus power right there in the dirt ball two got him swinging off to a strong start Singy as he’s punched out three of the first five he’s faced well he’s definitely minimizing contact he can get the swing and miss when he needs it but he’ll also keep the defense fresh behind him allowing some balls in play as well
travis Darno in now takes ball one off the plate swing and a miss and now it’s even one and one and a swing and a miss man that was pretty gross right there that one missed two and two that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was

anyways Rusty’s got a good zone very good on the corners of the plate but he’ll give pitchers a little bit above the letters and below the knees if they’re earning it

maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass
eli White next up for the Braves good defender he’s been inconsistent offensively one ball
little trouble with this one behind the plate and no movement on the bases it’s ball one he had a foul ball pretty good pitch to take a pass at and a one count just not able to square it up and that misses and the count two and one
that was absolute gas triple digits on the gun it’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by
hit in the air right field and that’ll fall for a base hit throw back in quickly first and second now with nobody out batting eight
recognized the break on that pitch early and that allowed him to keep his front shoulder in you know it’s easy to bail on those front door breaking balls but a great job right there of letting it travel then unloading a nice balance swing
now at the plate Steuart Fairchild that finds the mark on the inside corner and it’s one and one first and second no outs bottom half of inning number two that one hit to right no trouble here puts it away for the out one down

i’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound this guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year first off misses badly for ball one could use a ground ball here something in the infield runner at first base get two get out of this swing and a ball lifted left field ward makes the grab for the second half
just pulled off of it a little bit right there that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed if he does that he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left
right
back to the leadoff spot the Braves lineup now the leadoff spot for the Braves ronald Akuna Jr fouled off he was late murphy the lead runner out at second white at first two out of the inning not close with that one and the count is one and one outside with a breaking ball
good spot for the hitter definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch two on two outs and that one fouled off swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and that’ll fall for a base hit the throw in well those kind of lucky soft hits will always make you smile that line drive isn’t going to light up Statcast or anything like that but it gets the job done and he just kind of caught it on a weird spot at the bat but he didn’t get cheated with the swing that’s for sure matt Olsen up to the plate pitch misses and that’s ball one two on two outs swing and a miss and it’s one and one one ball one strike swung on belted that’s back there tattooed and gone another homer his second home run of the game and they add on it’s five zip anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one nice piece of hitting there at the plate
so two away with nobody on here’s Marcelo Zuna and the first pitch misses for ball one well they’ve been able to score four runs off of him in this inning and this is where you want to just max out get as much as you can give him one of those tough innings where it’s going to be hard for him to recover in the next one and that’s in there for a strike and now it’s even swinging a miss as he was late
one and two and down on strikes he goes inning over although plenty of damage done atlanta gets three on the homer and the lead is now 5 nothing major League Baseball is on the show on to the third inning so in now for the Angels christian Moore
christian Moore moore in his rookie season 22 years old a former first round pick in 2024 right down to shoot that’s strike one ball one there yeah there’s a ball
two balls one strike first pitch strike from the pitcher but then no panic at all by the hitter very patient showing good discipline now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count in for a strike full count now okay three and two the pitch is outside and ball four and that’s their first base runner of the game
here’s the rookie right fielder ground ball right side could be two one at second onto Olsen that’s two for me that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield the first baseman has to get inside create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first really good job all the way around two down base is empty the batter now Kevin Newman that one’s in there going one swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side that’ll find the stands close but called a ball it’s a ball in two strikes that’s one you always want as a pitcher down at the knees and it looks to me like he’s barking that’s a strike doesn’t change the call but sometimes it helps to let that frustration out a little bit

and next for LA Luis Ranifo he’s 0 for one fast for a strike newman off of first with Juel swing and a miss he was late strike two ahead 02 in the count sure you’ve got four pitches you can work with but throw something you can command and get this at bat over with as quickly as possible come on let’s go ground ball left side
over to Alb that ends the frame angels leave one it’s 5 nothing set for the bottom of the third so now to the plate for Atlanta austin Riley austin Riley that one’s in there it’s 0 and one
i think this is an important inning on the mound for him in this game he’s got to find a way to settle things down and give some length in this start up the middle moore not in time he’s safe
tough play and a nice backhand stop had to be perfect with the exchange and throw to get the out but it looked like he had to dig in there a little deeper like he was trying to get a split finger grip or something close play but that little extra time on the transfer made all the difference man at first nobody out here’s the second base Azie Albies and ball one here’s the pitch runner on the go and that one fouled off nobody out runner at first and there’s a foul ball gets a piece and stays alive swings and misses make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today

so here’s Murphy now he reached out a walk his first time and that’s a strike not sure exactly what he was thinking there good sinker ball pitcher goes with a fast ball in a double play situation when he needs something on the ground

as he was out front that time the next offering misses two and two ground ball left side could be two to second that’s one and it’s a double play to end the inning

just not able to catch up to that velocity and that misses off the outside edge

taking high in the draft he’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level

he’s pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success but you can never predict baseball highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side that’s the ball one and two
ward over at first with one away swing and a miss and he struck him out so he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game no that slider was way out of the zone and for me it just comes down to not seeing the pitch out of the hand not tracking it into the zone and then also being a little bit anxious not confident in your two strike approach and so when a guy’s in that position you get him to commit early and a lot of times you get the swing and miss as you did right there

that big curve inside a pitch that can buckle you a little bit looks like a fast ball out of the hand and then just drops over that inside part of the plate

I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard just doesn’t have the same intensity to it but he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score White white the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one nope ball two two balls no strike and that drops in for a strike
nasty 20 slider there for a strike that tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch fought off foul swing and a miss for the strikeout and that’s strikeout number 100 on the year he’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field he was out in front there just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track good pitch for the strike out fairchild takes a ball as he stands in for the second time and a swing and a miss there

two down nobody on we’re here in the bottom of the fourth oh two and0 that one ripped and it’s a one hopper off the wall should be extra bases into second and he’s got it doubled showed some really nice patience in that at bat worked himself into a good count i love the approach he had right there with that pitch not trying to do too much but still looking to drive it and that’s exactly what he’s able to do into the opposite field gap for the double so the lineup flips over here’s Ronald Dun Jr at the plate close but called a ball and that is ball one runner at second two down that catches the outside corner and the count even at one
wow just a beautiful back door slider right there if you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond
just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either and he couldn’t hold back he’s rung up on strikes braves strand one as they are unable to add to their five nothing lead we go to the top of the fifth travis Darno digs in
travis Darno Strider back to work and that’s a little bit high and it’s one and0 you know these Angels from what we’ve seen I think it’s fair to wonder if they’ve been too patient at the plate they found themselves behind in the count quite a bit they’re trying to be patient but it’s mostly resulting in outs not base runners and you could argue it’s making things more difficult at the plate
that catches the top part of the zone going to count one and two knocks that one away and we’ll do it again swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field under it is auna to make the grab and there’s one down up next for the Angels
and here is Christian Moore worked a walk in his first trip to the plate inside just missed

there it was a high velocity fast ball in the zone i think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter he’s got good stuff pitch inside the zone and trust it
up and in ball one he’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit mission accomplished and he hits a ground ball right side alb’s over to first in time and that is that back here in Atlanta ready to go for the last half of the inning now in for the Braves matt Olsen just missed
you know these Braves really impressing me with the quality of their at bats in this one it’s been fun getting a chance to see him go to work it looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early get him out of the game before he settles in so I’d say mission accomplished right through there for a strike

well usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 200 he’s put himself in a really good spot and that is in for a strike and a count two and one and
that’s a great take right there even though it’s a strike with the situation runner on first base you want to keep the ball off the ground and you swing at that pitch most likely you roll into a double play on the ground and that’s just foul hey you got this you got this two down fights it off he’ll see another swing and a miss struck him out he battled for a long time but it finishes with a strike out you can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one well that’s the effect of the splitter that you’re looking for on the mound really nice pitch right there and had him out in front over the top i’m sure the batter was thinking he was getting something else perhaps a fast ball with a little more straight and vo to it so now the angel cleanup hitter Joe Adele that one a little bit high and it’s one and0 lined and that’s a base hit throw stops the lead runner at second two on and two out now batting the designated hitter Logan logan O’Hoppy the next to hit for the Angels he has as they like to say let me guess boo light tower power that’s right and that is out of play ball one there come on let’s do it next pitch is outside

big time jam right there i hate it as a hitter but standing in center field you can’t help but chuckle a little bit breaking ball misses down and away meanwhile activity in the bullpen hunter Strickland appears to be getting loose bachmann getting cranked up as well the 1-1 is cut on and missed to the pitch upstairs and a breaking ball misses outside on the ground to third ranifo sends it across to first and there’s two down

well we call that keyholeing even though it’s right there and looks pretty good if he doesn’t love it he’s not going to swing that early in the count
