MLB LIVE🔴 Arizona Diamondbacks vs Kansas City Royals – Jul 4, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
All right, just about ready for baseball and starting in this one, Mel Kelly. Well, this guy’s just been filthy out there on the mound. Hitters batting under 200 against him. And they’re just having a hard time squaring up anything, doing any type of damage. The only way he hurts himself is if he gives up the free passes and surreners a rare home run. But outside of that, Yeah,
it’s going to be a tough job for the opposing lineup today. Jonathan Indie at the plate. Ripped to right. No trouble here. Puts it away for the Owl. And there’s one down. And here now the lineup for the Royals. This team, Chris, not one that gets a lot of production from hitting homers. So, they’ve got to find offense in other ways.
Yeah, Boo. Hit sequencing is so important for this team. You know, getting that walk at the right time, coming up with that next knock or extra base hit so that you can actually play to run. If not, then you see the record go in the direct opposite direction of where it could go. So, you know, a team like this, the good thing they’re going to battle. They’re going to put the ball in play and hope that they can find those holes. Batting third, right fielder Vinnie Pas. So, a man at first, Vinnie Pasquantino steps in for the Royals. Kelly keeping an eye on him. Kelly, a 6’2 righty, 36 years old, and he was drafted in the eighth round back in 2010. High in the air, out to right. McCarthy settles under it. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Batting fourth, third baseman, Mikuel Garcia. Mikel Garcia steps in for the Royals. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season, Chris. Kelly moved to first. And he’s back in safely. And that is in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one.
And one. Next offering is fouled back. swings through it and that’s a strike out. Royals leave one and now Arizona gets its first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. You’re dialed into the show back here at Chase Field. Today’s starting pitcher Noah Cameron Singy. He’s kind of a road warrior. Yeah,
I definitely say so. You know, some guys shrink a little bit on the road. They’re so used to just, you know, having the comforts of being at home and having the fans behind them. But this guy seems to thrive in adversity and being in some hostile environment. So, when you have a player like this on your team that goes out there and competes, you definitely like your chances away from your home ballpark. And that’s a little bit high. And that is ball one. Ball that’s upstairs. [Applause] Turned on but foul wide of third. [Applause] on the ground to third. Throws to first in time. One gone. Bottom half of the first. Time to take a look at the Diamondbacks lineup.
And it’s clear the most important job they have today is getting to the starting pitcher early and often. No doubt about that. That’s the best way to disrupt a game. But can they do it? Certainly something for us to pay attention to in this one, partner. an outstanding hitter in Catel Marte. What a season it’s been for him. He has supplied a lot of power and that average. Come on, you can do it. And first off, Ringer is fouled off. One down. Base is empty and it’s fouled away. [Music] up the middle. Whit over to first. They get the out on Marte.
Good fade and sinking action of that change up. Got that hitter to roll over.
Smith.
Two outs. Space is empty. Pay Smith stands in now for the Diamondbacks. For whatever reasons, this is a hitter that performs better in night games. We’ll see what he brings in this one. Two outs and that one wrapped foul. Swinging a miss that one in the dirt. Gets to it onto first and it’s in time for the third out. So that’ll end the inning. Scoreless after one back here in the desert. And now here’s the veteran DH Salvador
Perez. Perez. Kelly back to work. Right through there for a strike. in there at the knees. Well, at that velocity, if that’s all you’re seeing, 88, you can handle that all day long. That’s what you get in batting practice. But off the velocity of the fast ball, that is a very tough pitch to adjust to. And the righty deals fouled off. And they’ll do it again. sets him down on strikes. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. Wow, that’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long.
Not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to at least for now allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit them if they can. And to the plate for Kansas City, Jack Kaggleó. That’s in there. And one Kelly. He gets a lot of swing and miss and he keeps the ball in the yard. Not to mention the fact not too many hits either. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Even some of the best guys in the sport are going to give up home runs from time to time. and he’s an exception.
Yeah. And even with those home runs, if you’re throwing strikes and keeping base runners off the paths, then those home runs are solo shots. But to this point, he hasn’t had to worry about it.
You look at what the elite guys do. They strike guys out, they limit walks, and they limit the ball going out of the park.
Two down, base is empty. Drew Waters stands in and he grounds one to the right side, tosses to first and that is the inning. Offense held in check there. We go to the bottom of inning number two. No score. And we’re back. And now the first base, Josh Naylor.
First baseman Josh Naylor. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count.
He takes it on his own and quickly one away in the second.
Batting fifth, third baseman, Auadio Suarez. Au Henio Suarez up to hit now. Well, he’s been having a great year this year and hitting home runs at a good clip and the matchup is very favorable. And that one is downstairs and it’s one to Suarez working on a massive campaign right now putting up some big home run numbers. Outside low ball two. Well, we’ve seen him flex some impressive power this season, and there’s still a lot of time to go. If he can keep up this pace he’s on, we could be in for something really special. Next offering is in for a strike. Swing and a miss. Curveball in the dirt. And that one upstairs. way to lay off that fast ball up right there. You’re looking for something you see well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high. One down, base is empty. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Good played appearance there. able to take the walk and that’s how they get their first base runner of the game.
Oh, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Let’s do it. That misses one ball, one strike. Runner on the go. Swing and a miss. Throw save.
You know what? I like the aggressiveness right there. It looks like it’s going to be tough to score in this one. Really good pitching so far. So why not try to put some pressure on them and see if you can steal the bag, get in the scoring position, [Applause] [Applause] man at second. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Ground ball left side and foul ball. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. And ring him off, says Patrick Johnson. That’s a strikeout. Well, not every great at bat ends in a hit. He saw a lot of pitches. That kind of an at bat can be contagious to a lineup.
McCarthy.
So the go ahead run in scoring position. McCarthy will hit next inside. And that’s ball one. Two outs and one in scoring position. And he hits a ground ball right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So, no runs on no hits, no errors, and one left on base. We head on now to the top of the third. We’re tied nothing. Nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here’s the catcher Freddy For off the mark there. And that’s ball one. And another ball. Fouled off down the right side. The two-1 And a foul ball. He stays alive. That one out to right. McCarthy trying to get there. Brings it in. And there’s one away. batting ninth, center fielder, Kyle.
And now it’s Kyle Isbel. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. It immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Top of the third, no score. Off the mark there. And it’s one and one. One and one. He doesn’t get a knock right here. That pitch he just took is going to eat at him for a while. You might not see another pitch like that from a top level guy like this. [Applause] Not close with that one. And the count is even. Two and two. One out. Base is empty. keeps the attack back going with a foul ball in the air left field down the line and it stays fair. Makes the turn and heads for second and that’s a double. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that at bat. Battling with two strikes. runner scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Back to the top of the lineup. Jonathan India getting ready to hit. He’s 0 for one and a foul ball. Isbel the runner at second with one away. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Headed for the plate now. A long throw home.
It’s off the mark and he scores and it’s one nothing. Well done. Drives in the run. Just a simple ground ball the other way. They’ve had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. One gone, runner at first. Now here’s Bobby Wit Jr. One for one with a single so far. Rudder takes off on the ground to the left, slings to first. No chance at the double play with the runner in motion.
Right Vinnie Pascantino. Now Vinnie Pasquantino flyed to right his first time. clips the corner and one that clips the inside corner for a strike. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins in this situation. You have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. [Applause] Out to short Purdomo in plenty of time to first that ends the inning and they limit the damage. Back here at Chase Field set for the bottom of the third. Alec Thomas now Alec Thomas that clips the zone. It’s 0 and one and there’s a foul ball. [Music] That one just misses. And now a little barking back towards the umpire. Clearly thought he got that outside corner on what was a pretty big pitch. Sometimes that only makes it worse for you moving forward, but it can also open up that location in the future if the umpire thinks there’s a chance that he missed it.
Caught him looking for the K.
Nice job right there. He struck him out twice. The pitch before looked like it was strike three. Doesn’t get the call. Bears down. Throws another quality pitch for the strikeout. Now a chance for Jose Herrera. First pitch and he just misses. On the corner for a strike. And now two balls in a strike. [Applause] swing and a ground ball base hit right field. So that will bring up the top of the order with one away. Now batting shorts stop heraldo per.
So back to the top of the Arizona lineup. Heraldo Peromo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. There goes the runner. Swing and a miss. Throw to second. Tag out at second. Well, they tried to press their luck a little after having just picked up their first hit of this ball game. So that caught stealing kind of stinks. Can’t blame them for trying to get something going offensively, but so far it’s just not happening for these guys. Swinging him. And that’s strike two. Filthy change up right there. Just pulled the string. Foul ball still 0 and two. Two down. Nobody on. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Two outs. gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches.
This one in the air right field and it’s just foul. Five foul balls in a row. I have no idea what that feels like, but you got to love this battle. Just wondering who’s going to blink first. Ninth pitch of the bat do next. And a base hit into right around first. Digging for two. Now the tag at second and he’s out. Trying for two. And that is the inning. Back here in the desert now the third baseman Mikel Garcia and that one upstairs. Ball one. Garcia measures 6 ft even 25 years old and he was born in Venezuela. The one swing and a popup foul territory for the catcher. One up, one down. And now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate. Struck out looking in his first at bat. Highfly ball out to left field. Guriel. Puts it away for the out. Now batting number 14. And here’s the first baseman, Jack Kaggle Leone. He’s 0 for one. And that’s in there for strike one. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it.
That one fouled off. And that is a good eye on a pitch down low. One and two count. Two strikes. [Music] on the ground right side and that one handled. Fires over to first. That’s out number three. Royals bats are quiet there, but they still lead it one- nothing. And we’re back ready to go for the last half of the inning. Standing in as the power hitting second baseman, Catel Marte
singing. He’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do?
Well, just look at the back of my bubblegum card. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that can really sharpen things on the outer half, those are the ones that become elite.
Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 20, he’s put himself in a really good spot. [Music] Swinging a highfly ball right field. Isbel racing over to make the catch. Bill, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Smith at it with one down. Takes a strike.
Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average. Now this ball is well hit. This one’s got a chance. And that’s a little walkway out of here. That one felt good. His ninth homer of the year. And it ties it up. It’s 1. Wow. What a blunt swing right there. And now anything can happen in this game. When you’re working with this kind of velocity, so critical that you move the ball around, work quickly, and make sure that you keep that hitter off balance. Clearly not fooled by the location or the velocity. He was all over that fast. And now it’s Josh Naylor. And that’s in the dirt. One and0. [Applause] One down, base is empty. And another ball. Cameron maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run. Chris,
yeah, it seems that way. You know, pitchers, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit?
Well, partner, every pitcher is a little different. I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show. Uh so perhaps it’s the same with him. Nobody really wants their rhythm broken up, but sometimes they need a little pickme up. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on them for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. Suarez in the box now. No balls in a strike. Two down. Base is empty but one run across. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And that one misses up and in. And account one and two. [Applause] And they’ll do it again. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Arizona gets even with this solo homer. Call even now at 1-1. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. We go to the top of the fifth. Digging in as the switch inning outfielder Drew Waters. Kelly back to work. A change up missing and that is ball one. Well, these Royals just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game and it’s led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today.
Takes it himself and the lead off hitter retired in the fifth.
He’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution.
Freddy Fine steps in for the Royals. swing and this one’s bounced to the ground. Rolls across the diamond and a couple of quick outs. Up next for the Royals, centerfielder Kyle Isel.
Kyle Isbel steps in for the Royals. A double and a run scored his first time up. All right, back. Fast ball for a strike. This game has been so tight. Feels like the next team to score will win it. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Late with the swing there. He’s gotten into a really good rhythm. Sat down seven in a row. He just wants to get the baseball and deliver it as quickly as possible. Keep the momentum going. That one the other way. Toss to Naylor. Royals set down in order. No runs, no hits, no errors. Home half of the fifth coming up. All tied 1-1. [Applause] Back here at Chase Field. John Shabi with my buddy Chris Singleton. And set to get us started. Bottom five, Lordis Gel Jr. [Applause] that misses the zone and it’s one and0 [Applause] and that one in the air center field. One away. Now batting right fielder Jake McCarthy. Jake McCarthy stands in now for the Diamondbacks. 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. That one finds the corner and it’s one, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. One down, base is empty. That misses the zone and it’s a ball and a strike. [Applause] Line to the left center field. And that’s going to fall for a hit. So a man aboard now with one away.
Good two strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. Just a really nice approach to shoot that line drive to the opposite field. There’s a lot of hard work and discipline that goes into getting a result like that at the plate. Doesn’t come naturally for most hitters. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. And that one fouled off. [Music] [Applause] Now snap throw to first. McCarthy back on a dive.
I love this part of the game. Does he really want to try and steal second against this catcher? I know he’s fast, but it’s pretty risky. [Music] with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Next pitch inside now one and two. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open in the dirt but kept close. Runner holds tight as the count moves to two and two. One away tie game. Go ahead run stands at first. Last half of inning number five. gets a piece and stays alive. [Music] Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. He’s gone off speed. He needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the zone. Up the middle with takes it to the bag. That’s one double play. What a twin killing day to end the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. We’re through five. All tied 1-1. All set for the top of the six. Now here’s the leadoff hitter for the Royals, Jonathan India. Swinging a foul out of play. [Music] Next pitch misses. One and one. And there’s a ball. Two-1. up and in. Now three and one.
Oh, they have had a hard time scoring in this one. The pitcher out there on the mound wants to keep attacking. Make sure that they don’t get any confidence. Now this is in the air down the line. Nobody can get there and it’s a foul ball. Foul ball and it remains a full count. [Applause] 3-2 gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Music] This ball’s chopped on the ground. Gets it to first. He didn’t make things easy for him there, but they still get the out. shortstop Bobby Wit Jr.
Bobby Whit Jr. steps in for the Royals, one for two. Whit Jr. is one of only two players in ALL history to have 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in each of his first two seasons. Boo. The other player, Julio Rodriguez. At bat can be a little bit of a dance. Strike one here, but few more pitches. We’ll see how it turns out. Come on, you can do it. All tied up and we’re the top half of the sixth. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Up the middle and he knocks it down. No throw and he’s on at first.
No, he didn’t get much of that one, but it’s going to look like a line drive in the box score tomorrow. Good bad ball hitting right there. Just kind of threw the barrel at the ball trying to protect with two strikes and sometimes it works out well for you. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. [Applause] And he chases a high fast there. Threw that fast ball right by and slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. [Applause] Got him looking and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Well, I think that was just a case of a hitter quitting on a pitch. He was looking fast and didn’t see it out of the hand and just left the bat on the shoulder. That was a change up right over the play. Probably not the location he was looking for, but the change of speeds is what fooled him and he got the out. Now it’s going to be Michael Garcia. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. That misses ball one. Kelly moved to first, went back in on a dive. Two outs. Runner on the move. Pitch in for a strike.
Safe at second with a stolen base. Chris, his wheels were the difference maker on that play. Just got in there. Yeah, with Statcast’s help, we see his top speed on this stolen base. And that’s a big number. I mean, man, he really made his athleticism work for him on that one. And now it’s one and two
way high. [Applause] That one just misses. And now it’s three and two.
Close pitch there. And he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat. Man on second, two down on the ground right side. Marte throws the first in time. Third out and that ends the frame. One hit, one left. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the six. All tied 1-1. Bottom of the inning. And now the catcher comes up to him. Jose Herrera. Jose Herrera headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball. Foul ball there. [Applause] There’s a line drive to left field. That’s a base hit. And a good start to the inning. I’d say a mistake pitch in an 02 count. Too good of a pitch to hit right there. You have to expand the zone. Keep that lead off first base. [Applause] Heraldo Pomo the next to hit in the air right field. Pasquentino tracks it down for the out. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch.
Here’s Catel Marte. 0 for two in this one.
Definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball in the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. There’s the strike. Bullpin action for the Royals. John Shriber getting loose out there. Serpa, the power lefty up as well with the go-ahead run at first here in the bottom of the six. And strike two or two at the count. missed with a change up and the count is one and two. Way to lay off that pitch down [Applause] and just misses with that one.
Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. And down on strikes he goes. And that’s six Ks for him in this one. Well, big strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout. Making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today. Pav Smith digs in now. He’s already homered here in this one. And there’s the strike. Here leads off first with two down to the inning. Next offering is fouled back. Swing and a miss and a change up in the dirt. Throw to first in time. The two-3 strikeout ends the inning. So they can’t do anything with the leadoff single there. Seventh inning coming up. All tied 1-1. And we’re back. Salvi steps into the box now.
Designated hitter Salvador Perez. Well, he’s back out there to begin the seventh. That surprise you at all, Chris?
Yeah, a little bit. And it was a little rough sixth inning there, but his skippers got a lot of confidence in him. But trust me, they will keep a close eye on how he does in this one. Outside low and one and one fouled off. He was late. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. So the go-ahead run is on base with a knock.
Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. Go ahead run on base. Jack Kaggle Leone steps in for the Royals. Swang in a line drive. That’s a base hit into center field. Throw holds him at second, but the go-ahead run now in scoring position and still nobody out. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Tory Lavell is out of the dugout and he’s going to make a move here. Merryill Kelly departs and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching out of the for the Diamondbacks. Number 43.
Number 43. So, the go-ahead run is into scoring position. Drew Waters steps in for the Royals. Has grounded out a couple of times trying to move the runners over. Bare hand grabbed throw to first and very nicely done for the out. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. The job was to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score the go ahead run. That’s exactly what happened. So, you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. Here’s the catcher, Freddy Fine. [Applause] And that misses. That’s ball one. Definitely a strikeout situation right here. Lots of ways for that go-ahead run to score if the ball’s put in play. Just missed. Activity in the Arizona bullpen. Jake Woodford up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Curtis also getting ready with a go ahead run at third here in the top half of inning number seven. And a foul ball makes the count two and one.
Here’s a sackfly situation and he’s got to make sure he gets the ball out over the plate and get those arms extended. They’re trying to crowd him with the infield in be a big pickoff if he can push a run across. Two on, one out. Swings and misses. Strike him out. That’s a huge strike out right there. Big second out. Infield was in. They were playing the full court press and he got the swing and miss. Keeps this one tied. This next at bat should be a lot of fun. The odds of wiggling out of this just went up considerably. So, two down now. And here is Kyle Isbel. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So, they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. on one [Applause] on the ground of first. Naylor tosses to the pitcher covering the bag. They miss a big chance to take the lead here late. No runs on two hits, no errors, and two men left stranded midway in inning number seven. And it’s time to stretch. All tied 1-1. Now pitching.
We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. John Shriber.
He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season, so this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Here’s Josh Naylor
leading off for the Diamondbacks. First baseman Josh Naylor just Shriber measures 6’2 in 225 lbs and they went out and made a trade for him last season and that’s in there for a strike and now it’s even. I got a ball, one strike, [Music] and a foul ball. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. Diamond back hit on the ground to short with slings it across and the leadoff hitter set down to open the seventh.
That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit, hit the ball on the ground, kill some worms while you’re at it.
Au Suarez up to the plate now. He is struck out and he is walked. Hard hit left side. Whips it across
and that quickly. Two away.
Now batting left fielder Lordis Guriel Jr.
Here’s Guriel. check swing called strike. [Music] Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And the count is one and one.
Strike.
Two down, nobody on here. The bottom of the seventh. Outside low and it’s two and one.
We got two balls, one strike. A little out front there as he swings through it.
Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it.
That one sizzling on its way through to the off field and a go ahead run is on base. Everything came together for him. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know they used to say charge it crazy. Now up next for Arizona, Jake McCarthy. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. Two gone. The possible go ahead run at first. Next one misses. One ball, one strike. That’s down and in. [Applause] [Music] Two outs. Slides, but he can’t come up with it. And that moves the go ahead run to score in position with two gone. Love how he let that ball travel. Trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. First and second, two outs. Thomas will hit next.
I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. counts. One and0 [Applause] and that one missing low.
Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. [Applause] in the air to left center makes the grab and that is the inning. Diamondback strand a pair still tied 1-1. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Jake Woodford and he has some nasty breaking stuff.
Number 31, Jake Woodford at the plate. Jonathan Royals, second base Jonathan India. [Applause] And that’s through there for a strike. 0 and one. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. Shelby Miller up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. [Applause] And that one fouled off outside with a breaking ball. Two strike. fouls it off. Still one and two.
Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. [Applause] And a swing and a miss and one gone. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this. Known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. [Applause] Bobby Whit Jr. getting ready to hit. This guy is one of the best athletes in the sport. That one is absolutely belted into the corner, but foul. Trying to keep good speed off the bases. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top of the eighth. Hot shot to third. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. Now batting right fielder Vinnie Pascantino.
Vinnie Pasquantino steps in for the Royals. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strikeout. Come on. Come on. You can do it. And there’s the strike. One’s the count. Just missed.
Just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike, 02 count instead. It’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. And it is two and one. Two outs. Base is empty. That one fouled off. Two and two. That count is full. Mike El Garcia in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Two down to line drive and makes the play and that’s out number three. Royals go down one two three. Score remains tied 1-1. Now pitching
back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Taylor Clark.
And if you dig into his walk rate, his numbers are really impressive. He’s really filled up the strike zone this season. So these batters better be ready to swing the bats.
Now the D-Max catcher, Jose Herrera. He’s two for two.
Jose Herrera. That clips the corner,
man. 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a low end fast ball for some pitchers. [Music] [Applause] Paul, that’s it. [Applause] Next pitch is outside. [Applause] Swing and a tapper then rolls fouled the other way. Oh, he can’t hang on. Still manages a throw. The throw won’t get there in time and the defense comes away with nothing.
Having himself a really nice game at the plate. Kind of a risky pitch coming inside with the breaking ball like that. You have to bury it otherwise it’s not too difficult to get the bat to it like he did that time. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Heraldo Peromo. And that drops in for a strike. [Applause] He’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. [Applause] The short stop takes the ball. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. [Applause] The go-ahead run aboard at first. Nobody out. [Applause] Swing and he breaks his back. Off balance feed. Here’s one. And that’s all they’ll get. Not bad. Second baseman Catel Marte. Catel Marte up to the plate. 0 for three in this one. [Applause] First pitch misses.
Well, a mistake right here could untie this ball game. If you’re the pitcher out there, you just want to be a little more cautious. [Applause] That one missed. [Applause] Line to left. Fair ball. [Applause] He’s in at second with a one out double. A late jump. And I think that was the difference on the playbook. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. Pay Smith now at the plate. He’s already homered in this game [Applause] and fouled off in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring
with a go ahead run at third here the bottom half of the eighth inning that missed inside and that is ball one [Applause] right through there for a strike I Ultimately, you want to tie him up. Get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Yeah, that’s a little high. This situation, he’s trying to get you to pop something up or jam you. That’s a really good take knowing you got an opportunity to drive in a run here. [Applause] Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. [Applause] That pitch just misses the inside corner and it’s three and two. Josh Naylor in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] and they’re all loaded up. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one.
So, bases loaded with one away. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Josh Naylor. 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. [Applause] Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. So they’re all loaded up [Applause] and that one missing inside. A sharp slider.
Look, in situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. Pitch misses. Ball three. at risk of walking in a big run here and these fans really letting them hear it as well. Bounce to the right and it’s just fouled. That was close. [Applause] Ball fourth and a run comes in to score. got himself into a mess out there and now forces home a run with the wall. This is definitely getting away from it. So base is all loaded up. Here’s your third base au Suarez outfield playing very deep not wanting anything over their heads. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Strike one. Sometimes a hitter will go up there and guess. And it’s not just pulling something out of the sky, but expecting because of tendencies a certain pitch in a certain location. He just guessed wrong. There’s the swinging events.
No balls, two strikes. One ball, two straight.
One out. Base is full. battling here as he fouls it away. [Applause] All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate. Next offering is outside. The guy at the plate could recognize slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. and he knew right away it was an off speed pitch. Got him swinging and two away now.
Oh, we see it a lot more these days than we ever did when I played, but a slider in the 90 still catches your attention even if you’re sitting on the pitch.
Good luck recognizing that tight spin and adjusting to the late break. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. One for three. And the first offering is not close. [Applause] Griel gets a piece. hit hard on the ground to short. They take the force out and that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. So they get one but end up leaving the bases loaded through eight full. It’s the Diamondbacks two and the Royals won. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Shelby Miller. Save opportunity for him right here. And he’s their guy. Time to lock this one down and get out of here with the W.
Shelby Miller.
Well, one game Garcia digs in now. Garcia and that misses. One and0. Counts. One and0. Late swing, fouled off. Looking to get the tying run on base. [Music] [Applause] They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Really nice slider right there. Sweeping across the dish, but just couldn’t hang the edge. Spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Fights it off. He’ll see another. [Applause] on its way to the corner and that lands in no man’s land. A foul ball. [Applause] Fly ball to right. McCarthy settles under it. Drops into the globe and there’s one down. That’s a big first out right there and that changes things. Yeah, you can kind of see how just the hope and optimism is shrunk a little bit, but they got a couple more outs to work with. They got to find a way to get a runner on and get one around the bases. Perez in the box now. Takes strike one. One’s the count and he takes one right on the black and the count is 0 and two. [Music] [Applause] Check swing appeal to first and he punches him out. He went around. Well, we saw a solid effort out of their starter in the bullpen just following suit. It’s just a good day as a manager or as a pitching coach when you can hand the ball off to multiple arms and get stability from all of their performances. [Applause] Kaggleó stands in here. Leaves that one off the inside. And a swing to miss. One- run game here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] That one the other way.
Come on. Come on.
Throw to first. ball game and the Diamondbacks claim the win here behind some great pitching and defense. I always love playing Fourth of July games at home. There’s so much energy in the ballpark. The red, white, and blue everywhere. And when you get a win, you feel like you did something special. Now it’s off to get showered and changed and enjoy these fireworks. And your final score here today, 2-1. They hang on to win it by a run. for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shabi saying so long. What the
