Is Anyone Left In Free Agency After A Flurry Of NHL Signings? | Sharks Release QO List
after monday’s flurry of nhl activity is there anyone left for the san jose sharks to sign you’re locked on sharks your daily podcast on the san jose sharks part of the locked on podcast network your team every day hello welcome to locked on sharks the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the bay area my name is jd young caretaker at the reef also the co-host of locked on nhl want to thank you for making lockdown sharks your first listen proudly part of the lockdown network we cover your team every day and if you want to be an everyday all you have to do just follow wherever you get podcasts or you can watch on youtube as well and today we’re getting caught up getting uh ready for free agency has made a flurry of activity throughout the nhl uh the sharks made some qualifying uh offers so we’ll get into that some surprising moves that they made and or didn’t make and then we’ll look through the rfas heap uh and see if there’s anyone maybe worthy of kind of picking over of players who did not get rfas so or did not get qualifying offers so let’s start with with the free agents who are left right and there is a a ton a ton of signings throughout the nhl today uh of course you had like uh florida just bringing everybody back um the blue jackets starting sunday night and then into monday kind of taking care of their own people like with prov and fabro both being ressigned um just a a like a ton ton of activity right a lot of names that sharks fans kind of circled as like maybe a potential guy here uh could be are now kind of off the table so um so who’s left right and we we know kind of we need the sharks need to get a need to get some more middle six help right preferably someone who has some center flexibility uh we know they need to have more defenseman um and they need a backup goalie and that one um we’re we’ll we’ll get to that but still um so looking at kind of who’s left over uh when it comes to free agents um the highest scoring player who is still left over uh would be one mikuel granland so he has 66 points in 83 games uh the most points actually when it comes to just raw points um there’s other players who have more points per game but he is the highest kind of ranking guy and it does sound like the sharks are still interested in the muel granland reunion um what a potential contract would look like who knows especially since everybody is looking for middle like a 2c or a middle six help uh so it’s probably going to drive the price up uh right now but if these sharks are you know interested in bringing back railin they can easily outpay anybody right as the sharks do have the most cap space uh heading into this off season and need to spend about 20 to 25 to comfortably get over the cap floor i think the cap floor is set at 70.6 and the sharks are right around 51 so you want to spend a little at least a little bit over the cap that way you’re not kind of having to worry about it but still so um other kind of the big names out there of course uh ellers and brock basser the two kind of big forwards that are left uh when it comes to like actual like scoring production um ellers who did have uh 63 points in 69 games um and then brock ber put up 50 points to 25 but besser is a former you know uh like 40 goal scorer type of player so um little bit of a down year but we know what the the conucks were uh last year a a weird weird team because we know the conucks just can’t be a normal team so um i still don’t think greer is going to be in the uh high-end free agents especially for guys who are seeking term uh we know besser is seeking term and i’m not sure what ellers is i think carolina’s willing to offer all the money for him um among the forwards you know some of the guys we’ve talked about like jack rosik pew sudter uh guys who i’d be interested uh in bringing in as well um you have a guy like christian d’vorak who might be a solid fit kind of a middle six there um but maybe kind of like a little boow guy like victor olivesson there andrew majapani or kind of just some other names to kind of keep in mind here again if you’re looking to add middle six type of players there um defensively uh especially with with the eblad news right and uh not only the equat news both the prov news and the you know uh and the fabro news like everybody just kind of keeping their own players here really hurts the free agency market when it comes to defenseman um the highest again in point produ just raw point production uh the highest defense scoring defenseman from last year uh who is available free agent is matt greslick who had 40 points in 82 games and that again that’s nothing to sneeze at so uh left-handed defenseman who we’ve talked about on this show um would make a ton of sense for the sharks and would really help them with their kind of their biggest need of getting the puck moving from point a to point b uh looking at some of the other defenseman uh gabricov who is sounds like there’s a lot of teams willing to pay big mo for him and i think the rangers are going to be kind of one of the first teams lining up for that potentially you have old friend brent burns who’s a free agent um you have demetri orlov who had a terrible postseason and is 33 and you wonder if maybe things are starting to kind of wrap up for him uh old friend cody cece’s out there brian dumlin who would maybe make some sense if you get him on a really really short-term deal uh he’s 33 um we have brian lingren as well um as a potential option at least defensively uh nate schmidt uh i could potentially see had him really kind of turned his career around with with the the panthers here tony d’angelo which i want no part of uh just because of his locker room presence and everything like that of course nick pervix the analytics wizard who you know is is out there as well uh but it gets really shallow really fast um you know when it comes to looking at this this class here so um you do wonder if maybe mike greer is got something cooking it’s been very very quiet from the sharks and sharks camp and um you wonder if you know bowen byron he is a potential option for the sharks there if maybe they look to try to acquire his services especially if they want to try to add someone young who would uh fit the timeline of what the sharks are kind of wanting to do as well um maybe you look at trying to take on some uh some other teams bad contracts that could but still would help you a little bit this year you know i think of um i know like the isles have have some contracts that they’re trying to get off here as they’re kind of going through their rebuild retool type of thing i know they just signed roman off to a massive contract here um but you wonder if a guy like jg bego uh who’s got one year left at like $5 million would be a you know nice middle six option for the sharks there um like that might be a potential option you wonder also if a team like the panthers who are um going to be very tight against the cap floor maybe the sharks work out a deal with you know a guy getting a guy like evan rodriguez uh who would again help out the sharks definitely help out the sharks middle six there he’s got two years left at $3 million a very you know easy contract to take on or jeep jesper bosequist who’s got like two years at 1.5 but still not kind of big needle moving type of of moves there so uh i do expect greer to be like active tomorrow because again um yeah 25 you know 20 to $25 million you have to spend just to comfortably get the cap floor and uh he said it himself right he wants his team to be better uh they need basically everything right is his words um and so i do expect them to i do expect greer to be active tomorrow so now what does that mean and what is like how active and and stuff we will see i’m sure gre’s cooking up something that we you know potentially haven’t even thought of which would be super cool um but i know there’s some people who are worried about like are we even going to get to the the cap floor here not worried about that yet i do think the sharks i do think greer will find a way uh to add good players and that are actually building players not just um not just go acquire a dead cap to try to kind of fill it out here um goalie wise um it does sound like i think the sharks are really circling around dan vladar uh who would make a ton of sense for for san jose um again they’re looking for that guy who can be a nice complimentary backup type of player get along with asi i think lar feels like that would be a nice fit there um for them and a guy who just kind of mentored dustin wolf in calgary kind of came out was was splitting time and then as the season you know progressed kind of i don’t want to say faded to the background but kind of accepted that backup type of role i think that would make a lot of sense for the sharks uh you know i still think a guy like maybe like alex lion um if they’re because i think jake allen’s going to go get a solid contract from a team that is really trying to improve uh their their net uh at least their their their tandem there so maybe a guy like alex lion could make a ton of sense um maybe a guy like anton forsberg you know we’ll we’ll see what the sharks do here but i like they do need to find at least one goalie uh on on on tuesday so uh we’ll look at who the sharks made some moves here by uh offering some qualifying offers and letting some guys go uh so we’ll talk about some of the surprises there um here in just one second summer sports are in full swing whether you’re into baseball under the lights golf on the green or high stakes soccer action fanduel is the best way to make every game even more exciting you can you’re already following along the action why not make it a little more thrilling with fanduel you can get on the game while your friends are getting sunburned at the beach uh right now the giants cannot uh hit so i would just take the under on giants games until they can figure things out as i’m watching they’re losing three to nothing right now to the diamondbacks uh so i think i would probably take the under on giants oh it’s one nothing one nothing sorry uh probably take the under on giants runs for the foreseeable future right now so uh if you’re new to fanduel new customers can bet just $5 and get $150 in bonus bets if your first bet wins open the fanduel app today or visit fanduel.com to get started all right uh before we continue do of course want to thank you for making locked on sharks your first listen uh again uh i know the draft is over we still got free agency uh mike greer i i got a good feel i have a gut feeling greer cooks up something good for us so uh we’ll have you covered all day on tuesday uh with any move the san jose sharks make that day uh and of course we’ll dive into this draft class some more uh throughout the next couple weeks as we got you covered here and we start gearing up for the 2526 season which will be here sooner rather than later so make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on youtube as well all right so the sharks did make some uh moves they uh had their qualifying offers which was due on uh monday i think it was 5:00 p p.m eastern time so 2 o’clock our time um so basically qualifying offers these are rfas that these sharks um decided that they wanted to keep right um with the players who were not offered they become unrestricted free agents free to sign anywhere u just because they the sharks do not qualify somebody doesn’t mean that they can’t resign them and sometimes qualifying offers are more expensive than maybe what the player is worth right and the qualifying offers are kind of based off some uh you know like how much they made the year before and you know kind of stuff like that where they they the contracts continue to kind of escalate right so um so the the players who did receive uh qualifying offers this doesn’t mean they have new contracts this basically just means um the sharks will negotiate so if a team does offer a you know a if the team tries to offer sedum the sharks will ne negotiate with these players or potentially let them go but they they basically have the right to refuse or they have a right to sign these players so um three players from the sharks got qualifying offers thomas bllo daniel gusheen and defenseman jack thompson to be honest i was surprised that bordello got a qualifying offer um i thought the sharks kind of showed what they thought of of bordalow by basically only giving him one game at the end of the season i know he got hurt uh in set game but you know kind of waiting till the very very last moment to bring him up um so i i would i thought they were going to just kind of cut their ties with borderless so a little bit surprised to see bordello get a uh an offer here so um we’ll again we will see kind of what that looks like for for san jose and um how they want to kind of move along with this i get i i think they bring him in and kind of the same thing with actually both both him and daniel guushian and they basically say like this is your last chance to kind of make the roster because we have players who are going to be ready to pass you up here really soon um borlo’s qualifying offer is like $917,000 so it’s not like some massive amount of money type of you know uh easy for the sharks to to you know pay and then move him down to uh down um below and i do think uh no longer borlo no longer waiverss exempt so he will have to pass through waiverss to go uh down to the ahl so um as for daniel guushian uh his qualifying offer is like 813,000 um as well so he’s um like yeah like neither one of these guys i think are i think they’re going to have to earn their opportunities to we’ll just kind of keep it as that so as for um actually i think borlo may still be waiverss exempt anyway um sorry scratch that but anyway um jack thompson though feel that was a pretty easy one i think especially the way jack thompson played was kind of that tweener guy right last year playing half his games with the with the sharks and half his game with the barracuda uh i like to keep jackson thompson around a little bit longer i think there’s still something there with him at least bring him in give him a shot to to try to uh earn an nhl job when it comes to the guys who did not receive qualifying offers and are now free agents uh carl berglin forward nolan burke forward brandon co forward noah greor uh clem cen nikolai kovalinko georgie romanov and mitchell russell uh a couple names i think really stand out there um kovaleinko and romangh i think are the two that you kind of point to uh kovalinko who the sharks did get as part of the um the blackwood trade with with the colorado avalanche it just kind of felt like it it never was a fit and he had some good you know had some good moments there but i think the consistency and then uh kind of dealt with some injuries as well and maybe uh just wasn’t a fit with with san jose so um it does kind of stink because i felt like it was he was going to be kind of a big piece of that blackwood trade along with the second round pick in next year’s draft um but it just kind of feels like maybe he didn’t really work out and again um as a guy who’s 25 years old here you wonder if the sharks prioritize with it kind of like with the vastic thing which is much more important to you having a guy who’s you feel like you have a lot of those type of guys like a kovaleinko or the roster spot and i i think they prioritize the roster spot here uh romanov i think was the other one who which was really interesting to me because i thought romanov has really improved in his two years here uh especially with the barracuda guy was really raw when he came in and um still pretty raw player but like you you definitely saw a massive improvement in his two years in san jose again doesn’t mean that the sharks can’t potentially bring him back but i my guess is is what they’re probably going to do is you’re gonna get a backup goalie and whether it’s vard or whoever then you’re probably going to go find a veteran guy to kind of be the third goalie right the old aaron dell role of you need him to play some nhl games he can play some nhl games they’re probably gonna spend most of his time uh with the with the barracuda then you have um gabe kerry who they just resigned and then you have matt davis who’s on a ahl deal and that’s kind of your five goalies there in this system right and davis is probably going to start the echl and then if one of the ahl guys gets hurt he’ll come up and play or if he plays really well kind of like how we saw with gabe kerry last year so that’s my guess w with that but um yeah we’ll see w with the you know with some of these guys and right we kind like the writing was definitely on the wall for you know guys like kleen c and noah greger and and some of the and even a guy like brandon co who um just never it just never worked out for cody he never kind of found that next gear um playing in the ahl maybe he goes over to to europe or you know gets an ahl deal somewhere else or something like that but um you know even kleen right a guy who showed flashes but just not that consistency and again when you have a lot of those guys on your team right now and you’re trying to open things up to bring in some more competition and some more kind of legitimate nhl middle sixers right now uh it’s it was i think it was pretty easy choice for greer with some of these with some of these guys here unfortunately so um we’re going to look at some former rfas guys who didn’t get qualifying offers from their team got to kind of dig through the scrap heap and see if there’s anybody maybe worth kicking the tires on uh so we’ll get to that here in just one second all right before we finish up do of course want to thank you for making locked on sharks your first listen when you’re done checking out the show uh go check out locked on nh nhl podcast there’s no offseason right now of course we’re in the busiest time of the offseason the best time of the offseason to be honest uh where we’re going to be bringing you the daily leaguewide stories that matter most with the local coverage you love from locked on so find locked on angel on youtube wherever you listen to podcast all right um rfas former rfas qf uh guys who did not receive qualifying offers um any players here worth kind of kicking the tires on um as these sharks again trying to find some some maybe some diamonds in the rough here uh none of these guys are going to be like wow you know uh type of players um but i do think there is some potential pieces here if you want to bring in some competition here so um philip uh thomasino uh potential guy here is he who’s 23 uh right-handed shot uh was with pittsburgh last year at 22 points including 10 goals in 60 games um last year like former nashville predator kind of middle probably more of a bottom six type of guy but kind of plays hard um does have had some some interest some decent like coarsey numbers and play driving numbers type of thing but um and you know not maybe not the biggest guy like six foot 190 pounds um but he is only 23 and would be like if you’re trying to provide some competition for guys like um grundstrom or something like that maybe a guy that you you kind of kick the tires on there so um you know looking through the list here um i would say like especially if you want to go defensively uh zachary jones from the new york rangers left-handed defenseman he’s 24 um had uh 11 points in 46 games last year uh with the uh with the rangers hasn’t really been kind of been able to to establish himself but has put up some quality uh at least kind of you know course before and some quality uh u analytics here um but again a guy just has not been able to kind of establish himself as a full-time type of guy uh he’s 5’11 190 pounds and again left-handed shot so do with that what you will um but maybe a guy who i think would be an interesting especially if you kind of strike out on some other guys uh a guy to potentially bring in as well um another guy who i think would be just couldn’t stick last year uh jordan harris again 5’11 190 pound left-handed defenseman he’s 24 spent last year with the the blue jacks blue jackets and uh talking to uh jay who’s the blue jackets host just never really found his footing there in the system uh kind of feels like just not not wasn’t his butt if you go back and look at his time with montreal uh much better performance with montreal like had solid corsy4 numbers on a kind of some bad montreal teams put up solid production with them you know um 56 games in the 23 324 season he had 14 uh 14 points and three goals um and then 65 games in the 22 23 season had 17 points including four goals uh and again kind of had some solid production or solid kind of under the hood type of numbers there as well so um again like you were these are not going to not going to overly like move the needle but just want to kind of throw again kind of throw some some players out there as well um looking at you know just like what the sharks could potentially do i could see maybe san jose taking a run a guy like oliver walstrom who’s 6’2 205 pounds played with uh was a former 11th overall pick in the 2018 draft but just never really stuck around kind of playing with the islanders had a season where he had like 24 points for them way back in 2122 uh but this season with the bruins only played like 16 games and stuff uh maybe if you’re looking for like an that he would be like an ahl nhl type of of player um but did not receive a qualifying offer wouldn’t it be very expensive as well uh but yeah it’s again it’s not like this mo you know you’re not going to find some diamond in the rough type of player maybe arthur kv i did like arthur calv too so calv 6’2 209 pound um winger uh he’s 24 former second round pick of the kings um he used to destroy i feel he was a like back with the kings in in the 22 23 season he had 28 points in 56 games including 13 goals um and then kind of fell out of favor with the kings went to the rangers could that could be a potential if you’re looking for like a buy low scoring option uh and like none of these guys are going to be like super exp like you’re looking at like one one half million dollar deal type of things uh like none of these guys are going to be super super expensive so uh yeah again like it’s it’s not you’re not looking at um a massive list of guys who are going to come in here and change but just want to kind of go through some guys who may be worth potentially kicking the tires on here especially if you’re san jose and you’re you’re trying to turn every stone to try to find something or somebody who could uh potentially maybe you know right you you pump and dump one of these guys or something like that um but just a couple names i wanted to kind of put out there as potential uh former rfas so we’ll see what my career does uh and what’s going to be probably one one of my shortest uh what kind of shelf life episodes as we’ll know kind of starting first thing tomorrow morning what my career decides to do with free agency so uh make sure you again you’re following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on youtube as well uh i’ll be basically stationed here all day on tuesday waiting for news uh so we’ll have you know quick hits and thoughts and whatever the sharks decide to do uh as they get and try to kind of turn the corner in this rebuild enter our fun and frisky phase so make sure you follow along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on youtube as well follow the show on twitter facebook and instagram at locked on sharks follow me on twitter and blue sky fryhole uh until tomorrow bye friends

Sign few players too one year contract. line 3-4 player no more then 1-2 million. Don't help the Islanders unless they give away 1st round make them pay or any other teams
Bring Granny home!
Solidify our future of being trash for 3 more years and probably push ecky away. YAY
John Klingberg would be perfect, Nate Schmidt is a good locker room guy. Of course in an ideal world Ehlers or Boeser would be fun.
“Let Grier cook” Were definitely cooked 😂😂😂😂
I can see it now, Granlund 2 for 8 million a year and Burns on a welcome back before you retire 1 year 11 million deal……😂
I really would like to see Granlund back and take over the 3C role when Wennberg's contract ends next year.
Too many guys were able to resign with their clubs with the cap raising. That said, Florida signing Marchand for 6 years at his age……..😂😂
But hey, they are going for a 3-peat.
Edit: I would rather see a couple short term bloated contracts then be tied to a long term contract that sucks 3 or 4 years down the road when we are competitive and need to pay our own guys.
RIP the TeeTurtle and Disney collab.
Sign Ehlers!!
"Pump and dump" always makes me pause lol ⏸
If Dallas needs cap space I'd be happy to take Dumba
I hope GMMG makes a hard push for both Nick Perbix & Jake Allen. You have the cap so use it, (easy for me to say). I would give Perbix a 4-5 year deal at anywhere between 5 to 6 mil. For Jake Allen I would go 2 yrs at 6 mil. I would make it so if they choose to sign anywhere else it's costing them $$$. I would also love to see Granny come back on a 2-4 yr deal. I would not mind if they took a flyer on unsigned RFA RD Jacob Bernard-Docker. At age 25 there might be something there.
If we come out of the FA market with a couple solid top four defensemen, at least one middle six forward, and a proven backup goalie I will call it a win. I am looking forward to what kind of magic GMMG can pull off tomorrow.
Looking how Kovalenko walks free, the Blackwood trade sucks even more now.
I always thought Blackwood has more value and what they got in return just isn't it.
I’m starting to question the league wanting to expand when the talent market is this thin. But a bunch of teams are delusional when everyone wants to add. Just wait to trade until reality sets in and GMs decide to tank for McKenna and a deep 2026 draft.
It’s crazy that Granlund is suddenly the belle of the ball on actual July 1st. Carey Price here we come. Montreal is actually over the cap after the Dobson deal and would sweeten.
Will you be at the scrimmage?
Grany, Ehlers… let’s go Grier.
Nobody is talking about Brian Dumoulin and IDK why… Two time cup champ and great locker room guy that can help nurture the young defense.
He also was solid last year especially when he went and played for an undermanned New Jersey Devils squad.
Plus, he likes playing out west – signed his last contract with the Kraken.
Why didn't the Sharks try to trade for Nic Hague. 6''6" 230lb 26 year old defenseman.
Given the lack of available UFA goalie talent, I'm surprised by Romanov not receiving a Qualifying Offer. He and Carriere are a good tandem for the Barracuda to build off last season.
Very interesting episode JD. I thought this FA class was thin before the draft and now it looks downright anemic. I still hope for Suter or Granlund as a center addition, maybe Ehlers (although I seriously doubt it) on the wing and the gem of the free agency for me Gavrikov.
For the goalies, I hope you are right and they still manage to bring back Romanov and maybe Kovalenko. The goalie you mentioned (Vladar) I read about in an article a couple weeks back. He has the same agent as Askarov. The article went on to say that there were two teams really interested (the Devils and the Sharks) and it sounded like he was leaning Sharks. He sounds like a good fit and would be very reasonable price wise.
I remember you having an episode with some middle/bottom six wings that would work as middle six additions. Another defenseman you had discussed in one of your shows was Prebix. Maybe he would be a good fit.
It is going to be an interesting couple days and I hope GMMG makes some moves early or that anemic FA market will be empty.
I do not see them taking on bad contracts as GMMG stated that multiple times now. In his most recent presser went mentioning that topic he said maybe he might look at that in August.
I am very interested if he has some trades in the offing. GMMG has been very quiet. Normally this is the calm before the storm. I can't wait!
Not sure how we are getting to the floor with this FA class, outside of….resigning Burns
Gavrikov… 7 years at $7.8M per year. Sharks have to spend the money and he’s the best d-man available.
I don’t love having to give him seven years, but he’s 29 years old right now so he’ll demand a longer-term deal.
Ultimately he’s a second line shutdown D-man but could also play on the first line, even though he’s limited offensively.
Orlov on a 3 year deal for $5.5 million/year would also work. He did not have a great run in the playoffs but he’s still an upgrade and 3 years won’t hurt the Sharks long term.
Perbix from TB would be a good short term solution for RHD. More upside than Cici. 3 years at $3M per year.
Pius Suter would be my target as a 3C. 4 years/$5m per year and for a backup G, there’s a decent list of guys that can be had for 1 – 2 year deals for < $3M/year such as Samsanov, Allen, Lyon, Foresberg or even bringing back Reimer.
Jd do you worry that if you bring granlund back you’ll just be in the same position as last year which was last place ? Or do you think by celebrini and smith hopefully getting better that we will just naturally be better
lol sharks aren’t even going to hit the cap floor as we haven’t done shit to improve
