GET UP | NFC EAST 2025 OFFSEASON GRADES: COWBOYS’ SMART STRATEGY EARNS THEM AN A+ FROM ANALYSTS!
Time to put the report cards on the fridge. Great in the offseason. We’re starting with the NFC East where every team swears they nailed the draft and won free agency. But who really aced it and who’s heading to summer school? Time now to bring in our uh resident professors of pigkin. We got John Breach and Mike Rener here to hand out some offseason grades. Gentlemen, I hope you got your red pens ready, right? Cuz the NFC East is just begging for some feedback here. Let’s start with the Cowboys. They entered the 2025 season with Brian Shottenheimer taking over as head coach after Mike McCarthy’s exit. They added George Pickkins, Devonte Williams, and a first round guard in Tyler Booker to offset some losses that they had there. Zack Martin, Demarcus Lawrence, and Brandon Cooks. But fellas, with Dak Prescott returning from injury and just a really brutal, a historically brutal late season schedule ahead, how would you grade their offseason? Breech, I’ll start with you.
Well, Katie, I’m going to give the Cowboys a B. There are some parts of this offseason that I liked, some parts I didn’t like. I’m going to start with the hiring of Brian Shanheimer because that is how their off season started. It was, hey, look, we have this new coach. No one expected us to hire him. And this is the guy we’re going to count on to lead us to the promised land. So now you’ve fast forward, you mentioned the George Pickins trade. I thought that was a bold move that we really haven’t seen from the Cowboys lately. So I liked that. Then you look uh even further and they said, “Hey, look, we’re going to keep Cavonte Turpin. We’re going to keep our punter Brian.” So, they did make some solid moves. Uh but then Zack Martin retires, Demarcus Lawrence gone, Brandon Cooks gone, as you mentioned. So, there was definitely some to like about what the Cowboys did offseason. I didn’t love everything. And that is how I ended up giving them a B. I like this a little bit more than Breach did. And a big deal of that is because as a draft analyst, I love their draft. It was one of my favorite in the entire NFL. I thought going Tyler Booker, Don Essaku, Savone Revel, 12, three was just three solid solid picks. And then the George Pickins move, I I think it’s gone very underrated just what kind of addition this is. Not only because George Pickkins is a number one type of wide receiver. He was top 20 each of the past two seasons in yards per route run with just a cast of characters at the quarterback position, right? And in a runheavy offense there in Pittsburgh. So this is a 1A 1B situation. Allah, what like Cincinnati has, what like Philadelphia has, that can really elevate your passing game to another level. And because it was their biggest need, you know, wide receiver, everyone said after the draft, “Oh my gosh, they didn’t pick a wide receiver.” Well, they had this in mind and they added the best guy possible that any team added in the NFL at the receiver position this year. So, because of that, I just liked it a little bit more. A minus for me.
All right. But I don’t know if you guys watch the Netflix series on the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. Uh but I did and I will grade the squad an A. Uh after watching that for them. Let’s move on to the defending Super Bowl champions. The Eagles. They made plenty of changes. They parted ways with some key veterans like Brandon Graham, CJ Garner Johnson, and Josh Sweat, but they locked up Saquon Barkley. Probably the most expensive and best thing that they could do. They restocked with some veterans signing uh Kenyan Green, Aziz Ojelari, and AJ Dylan while a also drafting linebacker Jiad Campbell. But given the turnover and the fact that they face a really brutal schedule as well, 10 playoff opponents from last year, how are you going to grade Philly’s off seasonason? Rener, I’ll start with you. It
it’s tough because they were always going to lose a ton of talent. You look at that defensive line that they lost. Brandon Graham, Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, it’s just going to be very difficult to replace all those guys. But I don’t think they did too bad a job. Obviously, I loved resigning Zack Bond after an all proseason. He’s a guy you had to get done. And I loved pairing Jiad Campbell next to him. This is reminiscent of for Vic Fangio there, what he had in San Francisco with Navaro Bowman and Patrick Wills. I’m not putting him in that conversation just yet, but it’s reminiscent of that. And then I think the addition that I really love is Kenyan Green Trading for him. And yeah, I know it cost you CJ Gardner Johnson, but he’s going to cost less. You have that glaring hole at right guard. losing Kai Beckton. That’s really the only spot in this roster that has a need. He’s a former firstrounder who just never really developed. The talent’s always been there, but he’s still young, younger than some guys who went top 50 in this draft class, so there’s potential. He becomes that starter. So, I went a B for the Philadelphia Eagles. Uh Ron, I’m going to have to agree with you. We’re agreeing on something already. I can’t believe this. I’m also going to go with the B. I like that you brought up Kenyon Green because look, we saw what the Eagles did with Mai Beckton where it kind of looked like his career might be going into a tail spin. No, you put him in that Eagles offensive line, he developed. He looked really good. And I think the same thing could happen to Kenyon Green. Now, with the Eagles, when you win the Super Bowl, one of the problems is that everyone wants to steal your players. And that’s exactly what happened this off season. Uh Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, just a bunch of key players on their defense. Darius Slay are all gone. So, you kind of have to reboot and start over. But the Eagles have been good at
Welcome back to Dallas Insider, your trusted source for real, clear, and honest coverage of your Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks, where we keep you updated on every move, every rumor, and every training camp battle that shapes our team’s futures. Today, we’re diving into a critical roster battle that’s about to unfold in Oxnard as Cowboys training camp kicks off. We know CD Lamb and George Pickkins are locked in as starters barring injury and Cavante Turpin will continue his role as a special teams weapon in gadget player, but there’s one spot in the wide receiver room that remains up for grabs and it’s shaping up to be one of the most intense competitions of training camp. The battle between Jaylen Tolbert and Jonathan Mingo is on. In Cowboys Nation, it’s time to pay attention because this fight could determine how dynamic the Dallas offense will look this season. Let’s start with Jaylen Tolbert. Drafted in the third round back in 2022, Tolbert came in with high expectations. But his rookie season was underwhelming to say the least. Limited to just eight games with one start, Tolbert managed only two catches for 12 yards. For many receivers, the transition to the NFL takes time. And for Tolbert, that was certainly the case. In 2023, we saw a step forward. Tolbert played in all 17 games and started six, finishing with 22 catches for 268 yards and two touchdowns. Not eyepopping numbers, but progress was evident. Then came 2024, and we finally saw a glimpse of the receiver the Cowboys hoped they were getting. Tolbert posted 49 receptions for 610 yards and seven touchdowns, starting 15 games and becoming a reliable option for Dak Prescott, especially when the Cowboys needed someone to step up in clutch situations. Heading into the off season, it looked like Tolbert was set to lock down a starting role in 2025. But then Jerry Jones and the front office made a splash move, trading for George Pickkins, instantly shifting the dynamics of the wide receiver room. Enter Jonathan Mingo. Mingo’s journey to Dallas has been a story in itself. Drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the second round of the 2023 draft, the Cowboys had their eyes on him, but missed out when the Panthers scooped him up first. Mingo had a promising rookie year, starting 14 games and catching 43 passes for 418 yards, showcasing his physicality and ability to create after the catch. However, his sophomore season was a different story. Mingo’s production dipped, finishing with just 12 catches for 121 yards in nine games and starting only five games for Carolina. It was a tough year that raised questions about his consistency and fit within the Panthers offense. But the Cowboys, seeing potential where others saw disappointment, decided to give Mingo a second chance, trading for him late last season. He played in eight games for Dallas with one start, recording five catches for 46 yards, still waiting for his first NFL touchdown. Now, as training camp approaches, the Cowboys are banking on Mingo having that classic third-year breakout season, and there’s every reason to believe it could happen in Dallas. Why is this battle between Jaylen Tolbert and Jonathan Mingo so important for the Cowboys? It’s simple. With Lamb and Pickkins commanding the defense’s attention, the Cowboys need a reliable third option who can step in when needed, stretch the field, and capitalize on single coverage opportunities. They need depth, consistency, and a receiver who can handle the demands of a 17game season, especially as the Cowboys set their sights on a deep playoff run. Right now, you could argue that Mingo has the edge heading into camp. Coming out of college, Mingo is seen as the higher upside player with a blend of size, athleticism, and physicality that you simply can’t teach. He’s 6’2 and over 220 lbs, capable of winning contested catches and making plays after the catch. In an offense designed by Brian Shottenheimimer, Mingo’s skill set could be utilized in ways that maximize his strengths, especially in red zone and third down situations. On the other hand, Tolbert has shown steady improvement each year and has familiarity with Dak Prescott and the offensive system. He’s shown he can produce when given the opportunity, and in a competition like this, familiarity and trust with the quarterback can go a long way. Tolbert’s route running has improved, and his ability to find soft spots in zone coverage has made him a reliable target when the pocket collapses. This training camp battle will come down to who can consistently separate in practice, make the tough catches, and show that they can contribute on special teams when needed. Special teams might end up being the X factor in this battle, as players fighting for the back end of the roster often secure their spot by contributing in multiple phases of the game. Cowboys Nation, this is where we want to hear from you. Who do you think will win this battle in Oxnard? Yes. I will rate there team between a B+ and a A – minus.
Me my rooting for neither who. I'm rooting for is the undrafted wide receiver Traeshon Holden for him to take that number 3th spot .
Tolbert !
I don’t know anything about Mingo, but I do know Tolbert has to much heart and to many clutch catches last year to let the #3 WR slide out of his hands 🙌!
Neither… I like Ford Holden
Get this bullshit outta here

COWBOYS #1 WE GOING TO THE SB😂
