MLB LIVE🔴 Boston Red Sox vs Washington Nationals – Jul 5, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

about to get started here. And today’s starter, Jake Irvin.
Well, it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of erra, but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness, if you will. We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses, put himself in a position to bring that erra down because, you know, in the back of his mind beyond the W, he wants to have a better earned run average. First pitch 405. That one fouled off. kicks and deals. And a foul ball. That missed by a lot. Two and two. and down on strikes and one out. Now Roman Anthony getting ready to hit. There’s the strike. 0 and one. This one ripped but foul to the right. One out. Base is empty in the air. Right field. Pretty well struck. That’s back there. And it is gone. [Music] He sends it out of here. And the Red Sox jump in front. It’s one- nothing. You can’t ask for a better start than hitting a home run in your first at bat to give your team the lead. A breaking ball up and in. You have to be careful to not jam yourself. The velocity is not going to do it, but your swing path can if you come off of the baseball. Pulled his hands tight to the body. Really good job of explosion through the zone and drove it out of here. Next to hit, Abraham Toro. [Applause] Short hop liner. Handled it short and very nicely done for the out. Time now to check out the lineup for the Boston Red Sox. Trevor,
one thing these guys do very well is stay out of the double play. They’ve hit into the fewest of any team in the league. Chris,
well, Boo, we don’t see situational hitting as that art as much as we used to because guys are slugging the ball. They’re hitting it over the fence. But when you see a team that has the ability to shorten up, hit behind runners and go first to third or first to home, man, that just adds to the element of what you’re able to do in other ways with the bat. So posing pitcher better not walk anybody or give them free base runners because these guys know what to do when men are on.
Two outs. That’s a ball. [Applause] Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit and that extends the inning. One of my favorite stats all time. 1997 the Hall of Famer Craig Benio played in all 162 games for the Astros on Astro turf and he never hit into a double play. And with two down, the Red Sox the early lead now. Willard Abrau. Story off of first with two away. Story on the move. Pitch misses. Throw. Save. Well, with that kind of elite arm he has behind the plate, man, it’s a pretty big deal when you can swipe a bag against this dude. Maybe more than anything, it prevents teams from just testing him thinking that they can even steal the base. But right here, they successfully move that runner up to scoring position. Good job. That’s a strike and a count two and one. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. Runner at second. Two down. That one off the mark. Counts full. Three and two. Son Raphaela on deck for Boston. [Applause] Swinging a highf fly ball out there towards left field. Wood right there to make the grab and that’s the third out. Solo shot opens the scoring for Boston. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. Back after this on the show. Back here with my pal Singi. And on the mound today, Cooper Kriswell. Well, he’s been giving up a lot of hard contact this season. I mean, coming in, guys are hitting comfortably in the high 200s. So many times there’s some bad luck, but then also there’s just a little miss here or a little miss there that changes the outcome of the at bat. We’ll see if he can be consistent and make adjustments quickly in this one. CJ Abrams leading things off and takes a strike. [Music] That one not close. And it’s one and one. [Music] That’s a base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Kind of a risky pitch coming inside with the breaking ball like that. You have to bury it. Otherwise, it’s not too difficult to get the bat to it like he did that time. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. James Wood digs in now.
He’s done a great job making contact recently working on a fivegame hitting streak. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. [Applause] [Music] swing and this one’s bounced to the ground. Off balance feed. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. Batting third, second baseman, Amed Rosario.
And now it’s Ahmed Rosario. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. There’s the strike. This guy’s definitely a plus runner. But what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break, guys.
Runner on the move. Strike in there. Go to second. Not in time. He’s there easily. Looks like they’re trying to answer back on that one they gave up in the top of the first by being aggressive on the base pass. I like that. especially early in this ball game. Be aggressive while you can and see if it leads to some type of big inning. [Applause] To the right side, Meyer
over to first and there’s two away. All right, let’s take a look at the lineup.
Already trailing by run in this one. They’ll be looking to get on the scoreboard early on as well.
Well, it’s just the one run, so not too big a hill to climb, but yeah, if they can answer back in this inning or at least in the next couple, that’ll maybe settle everyone into this ball game. And that includes their own starter on the mount. Nathaniel low up to hit inside ball. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Two outs with a runner at third. And that drops in for a strike. One ball, two strike. [Applause] Out to short. Story sends it over to first. That’s the third out. So, one left for Washington and it remains one- nothing. Second inning set to go. And now here’s a speed threat outfielder Son Raphaela. Irvin back to work. Urban 28 years old and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2018 and a strike on the outside edge assigned to home plate duty is Ricky Holiday. Something I’ve heard players saying about Ricky strike zone is how he will call the high strike. That could be something that’s tough to deal with especially if you’ve got a pitcher out there coming at you with high velocity upstairs. What about some non nos? Like you can’t call the umpire blue the way you do in little league or high school, right? Yeah. Even in the minor leagues, you’ll learn quickly uh you call the umpire blue, you better learn his name. And uh that’s just part of being a professional player and even a major league player. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Great swing and solid contact. Just a little too quick. He’s got to stay back a little longer. just misses the mark outside the zone. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Another swing and a miss. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an attack like that one. It’s a good breaking ball there just off the corner where you can’t really do much damage, but it’s close enough to where you got to protect and he just couldn’t find a way to fight at all. Marcelo Meyer will hit next. Way high there. One and0. just missed. just off the inside edge. Let’s go. Rip to third and caught.
They put a really good swing on that pitch and hit the ball hard. You know, line drives won’t always find a hole, but the more you can hit the ball like that with good exit VO, the better off you’re going to be in the long run.
Two down, base is empty. Joe stepping in for Boston. Romy Gonzalez and first offering is fouled off. Swing and a base hit. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Connor Wong up next for the Red Sox. Pickoff move to first and he’s back in easily. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Gonzalez leads off first with two down to the inning. Next offering is in for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. And they’ll do it again. [Music] Worm Burner into the outfield for a knock. So that’s two straight two out hits. Now batting left fielder Jiren Durant. So the Red Sox lineup turns over now. Batting Jiren Durant. And that one pulled foul. [Music] [Applause] [Music] drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck way back there. That one is gone. A three-run homer and they add on. It’s 4 nothing. That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that. And probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. Roman Anthony now at the plate. He’s already homerred here in this one. Pitch misses. Ball one. [Music] [Applause] Two down. Nobody on. That clips the zone. One and two. That’s ball. Got him. Outside pitch. got the better of him that time. But the biggest swing of the inning comes right here. A threerun homer. It’s now a four nothing ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back in Washington DC. Bottom of the second. And now here is Alex call that hits the dirt and that is ball one and there’s a foul ball now to short story zips it Cross. One up, one down. Batting six. Shorts stop. Paul D. Young. Now it’s Paul D. Young up to the plate. That’s in there. Strike one. Fouled off left side. One down. Base is empty and a foul ball. He stays alive. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He swung over top of the curveball. Batting seventh.
Two outs. Space is empty. Brady House getting ready to hit. Curve ball drops in for a strike. Two outs. That one the other way. And a base hit right there. batting eight.
Show a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy, didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep, took the barrel right to it, and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. [Applause] Riley Adams the next to hit takes outside. Let’s go DC. That’s a ball.
Squirts away a little bit. That’s off the mark and it’s three and0. I would expect in this three 0 count you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you.
So now two on and two outs. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about.
Batting ninth center fielder.
Next the hit for the Nets. Jacob Young popped up. Gonzalez and the inning is over. So the Nets leave a pair. They’re on the short end of a four nothing score. onto the third inning. And now it’s switch hitting third base Abraham Toro. And that one upstairs.
I think this is an important inning on the mound for him in this game. He’s got to find a way to settle things down and give some length in this start. [Music] A little bit high. Maybe two balls, no strikes. You know, these Red Sox doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. They’re hitting everything thrown at them. Their contact rate is in the low 90s. It’s like they know what’s coming and that’s just pretty ridiculous what they’re doing right now. Those numbers are well above the major league average. Over to Low. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. Now batting shortstop Trevor Story. Here’s Trevor Story now. One for one with a single so far. Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. So a man aboard now with one away. So digging in will Abrau fly to left his first time. Foul ball there. Story the base runner at first with one out. Yeah, that’s fouled off. All right, here we go. That one 95 to finish him off.
He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time
little anxious Raphaela digging in. It’s the speedy outfielder Sidon Raphaela.
Boo. This guy’s just a tremendously talented center fielder. Gold glove caliber type out there. Offensively, he can do some things, but you know, also has some streakiness as well. I think the key just trying to find a way for him to be consistent day in and day out. You know, he saves runs in the outfield, so that’s going to buy him more time to work things out at the dish. Two outs. Story on the move
and that one wrapped foul. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Popped up foul territory behind a play. Brings it in and that is that. One hit, one left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. The Red Sox four and the Nationals nothing. Set for the bottom of the third for CJ Abrams. Now
designated hitter CJ Abrams. First off,
offering and it just misses. Drilled out towards left center field. Durant snags it on the run.
That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. [Applause] Wood in the box now. No balls in a strike.
Oh, one’s the count. Out to short. Tosses to first. Two gone now. Now batting second baseman Ahmed Rosario. And stepping in is the speedy Ahmed Rousario. He’s 0 for one. First pitch just misses. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. in this situation ahead 20. He’s put himself in a really good spot. There’s the strike and that one fouled off on the ground to short. Story whips it to first on the run. on the money. Nice play. Nationals go quietly. They’re down 4 nothing. Back here in Nationals Park. Here’s the second base. Marcelo Meyer. Foul ball. Well, he hasn’t quite settled in out there. Four runs in three innings. He’s going to have to have some quick one, two, three innings to pitch deep into this ball game. Gets him to chase after that one. Activity in the Washington bullpen. Mitchell Parker looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Williams warming up as well. That one inside now. One and two. Got him swinging. Up next for the Red Sox.
Next is the speedy first baseman Romy Gonzalez. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. That’s a strike. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. And a foul ball. One down, base is empty. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, it’s a nice job with the cutter right there. He didn’t exactly catch the corner of the zone, but that’s one of those where the late movement probably fooled the umpire a little bit. Those guys do not have an easy job. I thought it was a good take overall and you know, it’s one of those things where you leave it in the umpire’s hands, you just don’t know what the answer’s going to be. And that time he lost.
Two down, base is empty. Connor Wong up next for the Red Sox. That one outside and it’s one and0 and another ball. Two balls. No strikes. Grounded to low. He’ll do it himself. Red Sox go one, two, three. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. On now to the bottom of the fourth, the Red Sox four and the Nationals nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Chami and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Nathaniel Low. That one misses. Ball one. That’s down and in. Tap foul at the plate. Next offering is in for a strike. Two two in the count. Fights it off. He’ll see another [Music] spoils that one and it remains two and two. Battling here as he fouls it away. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Up next,
Alex digging in for the Nationals.
Alex Call. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Get on the ground to the right side. Tosses to the pitcher covering the bag. Already two gone here in the home floor. Now batting shorts stop Paul D. Young. Two outs. Base is empty. Up now for Washington. Paul D. Young struck out swinging his first time. The shorts stop takes a ball. Pretty good job on the mound in this one. Sigy. It feels like we’ve seen a lot of off-balance swings.
Yeah, just one free pass and uh obviously he’s not a big strikeout guy, but he gets soft contact and he gets out. Two down to and that’s off the inside edge and it’s three and0 and that’s him for a strike. Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. Three and two now. Fouls it back with two strikes. Two out. Base is empty. [Music] Swing and a miss. And he struck him out. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one, two, three. No runs, no hits, no errors. We played four, the Red Sox four and the Nationals nothing. Now pitching leftander out of the bullpen, Mitchell Park.
Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big ERA. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. So, the batting order turns over now. Here’s the Red Sox lead off hitter, Jiren Durant. He’s already homered in this game. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Durant in his third season, 28 years old, and he was drafted in the seventh round back in 2018. Bunch attempt, but that goes foul. base knock right field. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Hey, whatever works, right? Doesn’t have to be impressive. Pitch was away, so he definitely pulled off it there. Not what you want to do with the pitch in that location really, but he was able to guide it into the outfield for the knock. Stepping in, Roman Anthony. Nobody out. Runner at first. that misses and it’s one and two.
That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. lace to right center base hit and they’re at the corners with nobody out now batting third baseman Abraham Toro next to hit Abraham Toro he’s grounded out a couple of times drive makes the grab one down that swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well I know it didn’t produce a hit but he made solid And that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate.
Here’s Trevor Story. He’s two for two. [Applause] In the air, right side. Call on the move. Nabs it. Runner tagging from third. That’s a sacrifice fly as he comes across. It’s 5 nothing
right fielder Willard Abrau and now the right fielder will Abrau bowl for two in this one [Applause] and takes low from ball [Applause] There’s the strike.
One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. [Applause] Two outs. And that is downstairs. Two and one.
One strike. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] just missed and ball forward two aboard. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free passielder. First and second, two outs. Here’s the center fielder, Sidon Raphaela. [Applause] And that’s a little bit high. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike.
One and one.
Anthony on second. Abrau at first. Two out of the inning. Fast ball for a strike. [Applause] Two on, two outs. And a good eye there. [Applause] That one misses. Three and two now. [Applause] Gets a piece and stays alive. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. [Applause] bows that off to the left and will do it again. And a swing and a miss that ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. Two men left stranded, but they do push across one. Last half of the fifth coming up, it’s the Red Sox five and the Nationals nothing. And we’re back now. The third baseman, Brady House.
Third baseman, Brady House. Kriswell back to work. Fought off foul. You know, these Nationals just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone, and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today.
Well, I’d say that was a really nice pitch right there. And if it weren’t for the call, you could say it was a great take, too. I mean, it’s close enough to where you probably need to protect, but it looked to end up just off the corner. Riley Adams digging in for the Nationals. Worked to walk in his first trip to the plate. He swings and fouls one off. Well, on the mound, very efficient, able to produce an outcome, it seems like, within the third or fourth pitch of just about every at bat. outside and one and one.
The Red Sox leading by five. Last half of inning number five. That one finds the corner. That is strike two. And a curve misses outside. fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Well, you rarely ever see three curve balls in a row because that’s one of those pitches that’s most effective when you haven’t seen it recently. You might see three sliders in a row, but right there he was feeling that curveball and figured he could finish with that pitch up the middle and he knocks it down. Still able to get it there in time and they do get the out. Nothing doing for Washington. Still looking at that five nothing deficit. All set for the top of the sixth. Now it’s the second baseman Marcel. Second base number 39. This one in the air. House makes the grab. One away. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. And now the first baseman, Romy Gonzalez, one for two. We can do it. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Activity in the bullpen. Zack Brixie up and loosening in the pen. Williams also getting ready. Next offering is down low.
Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top half of the sixth. The next offering misses, and it’s two and one. Just missed.
First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count to the right side. Low takes it to the bag, steps on first and it’s out number two. [Applause] Now batting catcher Connor Wong.
And now Connor Wong. First pitch misses right through there for a strike. Yeah, that’s too high. Fast ball for a strike. Two balls, two strikes. [Music] Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Red Sox go down one, two, three as they are unable to add to their five nothing lead. They hand the ball over to a new arm, Garrick Crochet. And you know, bullpen guys can struggle sometimes when they’re called upon with big leads because it just doesn’t have the same intensity as a tight game. So, we’ll see how sharp he is. Your mental toughness matters in situations like this as well.
So, the next lineup turns over. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. He is singled and he is fly to left. [Music] And first off is fouled off. And it’s fouled away. [Music] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. One away. James Wood the next to hit.
Left fielder. James Wood. That one is upstairs [Applause] on the ground to third and a couple of quick outs. Now batting second baseman Ahmed Rosario.
Two down. Base is empty. Ahmed Rosario digging in for the Nationals. Has grounded out a couple of times. And foul ball. [Music] That pitch gets the corner and the count one and two. Come on DC. Foul ball left side. And he’ll see another. Next one misses and that’s ball two.
Oh, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Raphaela makes the play and it’s out number three. Offense held in check there. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Red Sox five and the Nationals nothing. Back here in Nationals Park. Top of inning number seven. Now the left fielder Jiren Durant. climb the ladder with that fast ball. That’s strike one. Swing and a miss. I think he was sitting off speed there. [Applause] And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Foul ball still 0 and two.
That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was.
Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Wood makes the grab on the run.
No, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Anthony
in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Just missed.
Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Wood corrals it. Two down. Now batting third baseman Abraham Toro. Two outs. Base is empty. And next for the Red Sox, Abraham Toro clips the corner and it’s 0 and Five. [Music] Way inside. Gets out of the way. on the ground right side. The flip to the pitcher covering and that’ll do it. Nothing doing it for Boston, but they hold a five nothing lead. [Music] Bottom of the inning. Here’s the thing. Washington first baseman Nathaniel Low pitch misses inside and that’s ball one. The bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one.
I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball.
Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. So a foul ball makes it one and two and that’s outside and it remains two and two. The count’s full. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another the kick the 3-2. That one misses.
So a lead off walk. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the wall.
Right.
Alex. Now it’s the right fielder. Alex call. If you’re going to get something going, this is the time to do it. You get the leadoff man on. Everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say, “I’m just going to keep the line moving.” Don’t try to do too much. Ripped on a line. And this one looks like trouble. Coming home. The relay. He’s safe. It’s 5-1. Picks himself up an RBI. Cutter on the inside edge of the plate. That’s a tough pitch to handle, but he seemed to have no problem with it whatsoever. Turned on it nicely. And now for Washington. Paul De Young was 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts on the ground out to short. Story sends it over to first and one away in the bottom of the seventh.
Up next for the Nationals, third baseman Brady. Brady House will hit next. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. man at second. Swinging a foul. Pushed off to the right. Swing and a fly ball. Well struck left field. Raphaela pulls it in and there’s two away. So, a man aboard and it’s the catcher for the Nationals, Riley Adams.
A strike out and a walk right side. Abrau sizing this one up. And that is that one for the Nationals on this RBI double. It’s now a 51 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the Zack Brixie.
Well, he’s been a bit of a wild card out there in terms of throwing strikes. He’s definitely struggled with three passes this year.
Trevor Story. Trevor Story comes up to the plate. Let’s go. Come on. Chopped to the right side over to low. Lead off man is out here in the eighth. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. So up next, Willard Abrau. And that’s in the dirt. Ball one. Movement in the bullpen. Number 61 looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Right through there for a strike. They say we win. One ball, two cut on and miss. Drop him out. That’s out number two. St. Raphael up next for the Red Sox.
0 for three in this one. And that one hit to first. Low takes it himself and it’s a one, two, three inning. Red Sox go down quietly. They lead this one though 51. Back in Washington DC onto the bottom of the eighth. Up now for Washington. Jacob Young. Crochet back to work and first offering is fouled off. Drops one down in front of the plate. Throw off line. He’s safe and a nice job there to keep it from getting away. This is a big part of his skill set and he puts himself into situations where he can rely on his speed to impact the ball game and this is just another example of it. And we’ll see what else he can do now that he’s on first.
And here is CJ Abrams.
Oh, that’s
inside. Just missed. the lefty the one
and that’s in for a strike.
Young gets his lead at first with nobody out. There’s the swing and a miss.
One ball, two strikes. [Music] Ground ball left side and that’s just foul.
Runner at first with no outs here. Screaming a miss. Struck him out. One out.
Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. And what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is. And that’s what leads to the strikeout. Pulls it down and there’s two gone. Now batting second baseman Amed Rosario. Next to hit for the gnats, Ahmed Rosario.
Let’s go. Come on. Let’s go big. All right. First pitch, not close.
The Nets down by four near the bottom half of the eighth inning. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, this looks like it’s going to be a wasted opportunities. Frustrating when you get the leadoff man on, but you can’t get him into scoring position. They’re going to need a big knock. Try to put something up on the board. That’s to third. Toro whips it across. Third out and that ends the frame. Nationals leave one. They’re down here 5 to one. We go to the ninth and stepping in for Boston, Marcel. [Applause] And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. [Applause] Highfly ball out towards left field. Way back there and it hits the fence. safe at second with a leadoff double. He was all over that one. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. And here’s the first baseman, Romy Gonzalez. One for three. And that’s through there for a strike going [Applause] that clips the inside corner for a strike. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] That one misses at a count one and two. Two strikes count [Applause] and miss. Strike him out. And a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Now that
Conor up next for the Red Sox. Fast ball for a strike. [Applause] and that drops in for a strike quickly in an 02 hole. You’re going to have to give something up here in terms of power if you want to put the ball in play with any authority. And down on strikes he goes. And he’s registered three Ks in this one.
Now that is leftielder Jiren Durant. Here’s the left fielder, Jiren Durant, and he had a big swing of the bat early on of the ball game.
Yep. A three-run rocket back in the second. Even though it was early, a big homer like that can be tough to come back from when you’re on the other end of that thing. I mean, it’s tough. Sets up an uphill battle the rest of the way. [Applause] Meyer at second with two down. Line drive. Rosario tosses the first and that’s the third out. So a leadoff double but they can’t cash it in. Onto the bottom of inning number nine. 456 coming up. It’s the Red Sox five and the Nets one. Now pitching four
back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Justin Wilson.
And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. Nathaniel Low digging in for the Nationals. First baseman, Nathaniel Low. [Applause] First pitch and he just misses [Applause] right through there for a strike. In this situation, you expect the batters to be a little more patient, possibly take until they get a strike. With that, you don’t want to miss your opportunity to get ahead early in the count. He didn’t right there. And that’s downstairs now. Two balls in a strike. And that clips the inside corner. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. That one misses and it’s three and two. [Applause] keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. [Applause] Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Swings through that and it’s a strike out. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out.
And now the right fielder, Alex. [Applause] Close, but called a ball. One and0. And another ball. Back door breaking ball just missed right there. And boy, umpire didn’t give him the call. I bet you if he throws it again, hitter knows he’s going to have to swing it. [Applause] That’s outside now. Three and one down the line. And that will drop foul. One down. Base is empty. Swing and a miss. Down to the last out for the Nationals. Stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there. And I don’t mean to laugh, but that’s a tough one. I mean, pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch. I mean, it looks like a fast ball middle end. Kind of has cutter action and it just bunches you up to where you can’t get your hands through and the barrel to it. Not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early and you spit on it.
Young in the box here lets that one go for a ball. Next offering is downstairs. [Applause] [Applause] They’re down to their final strike. This could end it. Two down, nobody on. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. [Applause] swing and a miss and he got him. And the crowd goes home disappointed as this one draws to a close. Sometimes road trips can be tough. You’re away from your family, but when you can win, silence that opposing crowd. It makes things just a little bit better. Makes the road trip just a little bit shorter.
51 is how it ends. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show, I’m John Shambi. Thanks for joining us.
