MLB LIVE🔴 Tampa Bay Rays vs Minnesota Twins – Jul 5, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
and welcome into the ballpark. Happy to have you with us. MLB the show with a good one coming at you. It’s the Tampa Bay Rays taking on the Minnesota Twins. First pitch coming your way next. Just about set and on the hill in this one. David Festa. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy.
Well, I hear you about the strikeout. It’s a lot more guys striking out today, but when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and missed stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it.
Josh Low, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. First pitch 110 ball. Two balls. No strike in there at the knees. And it’s two and one now.
Two balls, one strike. lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. Bader hauls it in and there’s one away. Now a look at Kevin Cash’s lineup for the Tampa Bay Rays. A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus. Taylor Walls.
Well, these days we know teams, you know, they put a game plan together for every hitter in a lineup. But a guy like this, they circle him, make sure he doesn’t beat you. Uh, so you know, they put in a little extra time and effort and on how they’re going to approach him. He can be a huge difference maker when he’s hot. So, it’s going to be fun to see how they try to work him right here.
Brandon Laauo in the box now as he leaves that one up high. Come on, David. And he takes a strike. That’s down and in.
Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. That misses the zone and now three and one.
Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, that’s a good take by him upstairs. And that is ball four.
Oh, that’s a really good take right there. And that’s just mentally prepared knowing that if it’s not on a TE, you’re going to take that pitch because you still have one more strike to work with. Not easy to lay off, but he did an excellent job in that plate appearance. Yandi Diaz stands in now and watches strike one. Diaz goes 6’1, 33 years old, and he’s usually a first baseman, but today he’s the designated hitter. Runner on the goal, cut on and miss.
No ball.
Throws save.
I think that steel kind of sets the tone, not just for this game, but for the entire series. First inning, game one. So, that kind of tells me they’re going to be aggressive on offense and try to force the issue whenever they can. [Music] And the pitch one
squirts away a little bit. [Music] Fights that one away. Still one and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up.
Man at second. That to right. Can’t get there. And it deflects off him into third now. So runners at the corners and one out.
You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that, but so far I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation.
Next to hit, Jonathan Aranda at 96. That pitch is in for a strike.
The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike.
I think ultimately you want to tie him up. Get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield on the ground to short. Could be two. Over to Castro for one double play. What a twin killing to end the inning. One hit, one left. And now the Twins will go to work on offense. We’ve got no score. back in Minnesota on the hill here today. Ryan Pepio, what’s the word on him?
Well, he’s putting together a really nice season on the mound. Erra RA in the low threes. Very respectable when you consider guys are looking to do damage. They’re not trying to just walk and hit singles. They’re trying to hit homers and draw walks and score runs. So, when you have a guy that can limit the other team from scoring more than a few runs, that’s really tough to beat game in and game out. Byron Buckton leading things off and takes a strike. And that is downstairs. And the count is one and one. And misses inside. And that’s down and away. Oh, look at the stop. Throw to first. Got him. Nice play. Now the lineup for the Twins as constructed by Rockco Baldelli and perhaps part of the game plan is to get into the bullpen as early as possible. They’re facing a staff that’s blown a lot of games in the later innings.
Booan as hitters, you’re aware of that, but you don’t want to become too relaxed and wait too late in the ball game because you never know what could happen on any given day. But with that said, even if you fall behind early, you’ve got a lot of confidence that this game will not be over until that final out.
Trevor Lick batting with one down, takes a strike. Swing and a miss and it’s 0 and two.
Got away with that one. Left the curveball up a little bit. He’s going to have to finish it if it’s going to be an effective pitch.
And that’s outside. And that’s off the inside edge. The countdown two and two. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again.
That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Got him looking and he didn’t like the call.
Wow. That’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long.
Not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to at least for now allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit him if they can. Two down, base is empty. This is Willie Castro. There’s a strike. Two out. Space is empty. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] And now one and two. Fights it off. He’ll see another [Music] foul ball left side. He’ll see another pitch in the dirt and it’s two and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Two outs and that skips in the dirt.
Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. The right-hander gives up the two out walk. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat.
It’s not easy laying off that pitch. It’s designed to fool you, but he just wasn’t fooled at all. So two down now the Minnesota cleanup hitter Brooks lead that one back up the middle and it gets through. Throw in holds the lead runner at second. Two on now with two away. Waste no time there and smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play.
And now the first baseman Ty France just missed. Castro the lead runner at second. Lee on first with two down in the air out to center. Makes a nice running catch and that’s the inning. Twin strand a pair scoreless after one. All set for the start of the inning. Now, Junior Camro, he set a new career high in home runs this year. And Sigy, he’s just trying to set the bar as high as possible now. Festa back to work. and that drops in for a strike. Dangerous spot for that slider right there. Didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break. Tell you what, he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again. Next offering upstairs.
He really committed to that fast at the top of the zone. He knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hit hard by a power guy like this. That’s a nice miss right there. [Music] Not close with that one.
And that’s ball two. That’s inside. That catches the zone for a strike and a full countdown. liner base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. And stepping in, the rookie left fielder Jake Mangum misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. [Music] on the ground right side. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. No throw. And that leaves them with runners at first and second.
Two consecutive base hits for these guys here. Runner in scoring position now. And a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game.
And here’s the rookie center fielder. That one inside. Look out. That’s a drive. fought off foul. First and second here. No outs down the left field line. Looks like extra bases coming home. He scores and they have the lead. The second run scores. It’s two zip.
Gets the job done as he brings home a pair. That was a thing of beauty. May have been a little behind the pitch, but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in a swing, he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Matt Feice comes up to hit here. Fast for a strike at 95. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the top of the second. And he’s down 02 as he swings through it. Very well executed change up right there if he can command the fast ball consistently. That’s going to be an important pitch in terms of him turning this outing around. Man at second.
That’s down and in. A slider missed. That’s the third. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly and no shot to get him at first. There’s two aboard. [Music] First and second, no outs. Taylor Walls next to hit for the Rays edge of the zone for a strike 0 and one. He’s looking for a strike out or a ball on the ground for a double play to sort of calm this situation down.
No outs. Runners at first and second. A short stop takes the ball. [Music] grounder might be two to Lee back to first and that is a double play.
They made that double play look so easy but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. So the Rays batting order turns over. Josh Low next to hit for the Rays. Hit weekly on the ground. Castro fires to first on the run and very nicely done for the out, but they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double and it’s two zip. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. back in target field and now the right fielder Matt Walmer
taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level inside. Almost got him.
Straighten him up a little bit.
Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shut down inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Next offering is downstairs
right now behind in the count. two balls and no strikes. No free passes. You can’t allow that.
And another ball. [Music] That one misses.
So, a lead off walk. It’s tough after falling behind a hitter. Two balls and no strikes. But now at least he gets a fresh start against a new batter. But he needs to get back into the strike zone and start pitching with conviction. Royce Lewis in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. just missed. Next pitch is Del Stairs and ball four to a board. Just came apart right there. four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone.
So here’s Ber now. He’s been a great free agent side. Right through there for a strike. 01. And there’s the strike.
Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. chopped out in front of the plate. Throws to first in time. And that is a big first out.
That was a productive at bat. You know you’re doing something right. Anytime you help move two runners into scoring position and give your team a chance to drive in a few runs, even if it’s still kind of early in the game, Christian Vasquez at the plate now and that’s inside. Next offering upstairs. In this situation, he’s trying to get you to pop something up or jam you. That’s a really good take knowing you got an opportunity to drive in a run here and fouled off. Walner the runner at third. Lewis over at second with one down. got him looking. Huge strike out there. Well, even if you don’t feel great about it, you got to swing the bat with two strikes in this situation. You’ve got the tying run out there in scoring position. Just put the ball in play. Maybe something good will happen. It just didn’t look like he understood the situation.
Here’s Byron Buckton. Yeah, don’t need much damage here. Just a base hit. Likely will score two. And that one off the outside edge. Popped up foul territory behind the plate. That is the inning. After two, it’s a two nothing ball game. And we’re back onto the third inning. Now up for Tampa Bay. Brandon
Laauo. And the first pitch misses for ball one. One ball, no strikes. Hard hit right side. Castro sends it to first. Lao out on the play. Yandi Diaz now one for one with a single so far. in for a strike and it’s 0 and one in the air left field down the line. Bader makes the play and there’s two down.
Good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay closed.
Two outs, space is empty and next will be the cleanup hitter, Jonathan Aranda. He’s 0 for one inside. Ball one.
10. [Music] Next offering is outside on the ground right side. That ends the frame. Nothing doing here this half. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Rays two and the Twins nothing. Set for the bottom of the third. Here’s Trevor
Lick. First pitch just misses. Well, these twins showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’ve worked three walks already, so that proves they’re not anxious up there. They’re sticking to their game plan and it’s working. Swings through that one out in front that time.
Two balls, one strike. Yeah, that’s fouled off. And the curve is down and in. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked down on strikes looking for the second straight plate appearance. Digging in Willie Castro. He reached out to walk his first time on the ground to third. And that’s a fair ball around first and hustling for second. And he’ll pull in there with a stand up double. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. One out, runner at second. Lee getting ready to hit a single his first time. That one’s upstairs. Ball one.
One ball, no strikes. Castro leads off second with one gone in the inning. And there’s the strike [Music] that misses. Two and one. And that’s outside.
Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position. Hitters count. Next offering is fouled back.
Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. And down on strikes he goes. He’s notched four strikeouts now.
That’s just a nasty pitch right there. And I’m not surprised at all that he got the strike out looking. You know, at the plate, looks like it’s a fast ball off the corner the entire way until just that very last second when that cutting action takes over and brings it back to clip the outside corner. You just got to tip your cap sometimes, but overall that’s just a nasty pitch.
France in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike late with the swing there.
Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder.
That one down the line and it goes just foul [Music] up the middle. Waltz gets it to first and that is the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors and a man left. Three innings complete. It’s the Rays two and the Twins nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Junior Camro. misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike.
Well, I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. And that one fouled off. Ball to strike. Swinging a foul straight back. Twins and misses. It’s a strike out. Slider got him for strike three.
He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the
strike out. This one lifted in the air left field. Bader snags it for the second out. Tampa Bay center.
Two down, base is empty. And now the center fielder doubled in his first AB. Just off the outside edge and that is ball one outside ball. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. Pitch misses inside and that’s ball three. All I would expect in this three 0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. And that’s in for a strike. That one fouled off. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. swing and a miss. Struck him out. Nothing doing it for Tampa as they’re unable to add to their two nothing lead. Back in Minnesota. Bottom of the fourth. And now for the Twins. Matt Walmer. Walner measures 6′ 4 in. 27 years old. A former first round pick back in 2019. And that one in the air center field sizing this one up. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s one down.
Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Tap foul at the plate. One down. Base is empty. Strike two. No ball. Two strikes. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill.
Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting him away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. And now Bader up to the plate. Breaking ball misses down and away. The Rays up by two. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And another ball on the ground. Camero slings it across
and he has thrown four shut out innings. Twins are set down one two three and they’re down two nothing. Back at target field ready now for the fifth inning. And now the catcher for the Rays, Matt tha back to work. And strike one to the catcher. I think he was sitting off speed there. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. right through there. Got him. And he’s registered three Ks in this one.
Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. He got three straight fast balls looking in the O2 count just to pour it back. Walls the next to hit. Takes outside. The short stop takes the ball.
Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. In this situation, ahead 20, he’s put himself in a really good spot. Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit. So the one out hit turns the lineup over. Now batting right. So the batting order turns over. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter Josh Low for two in this one. That clips the zone and one. Walls at first. One gone. Runner on the move. And that one hammered. Fader racing after it. And an automatic double as it hops the fence. This is a tough play for the offense to stomach. I mean, they did everything right, but the automatic double just ruined the hit and run. The runner had a great jump from first and at the plate, really good contact. Just a little bit of bad luck robbed him of a run. Here comes the manager out of the Twins dugout and he will make a move to the pen. David Festa will depart and he’s on the hook for the runners at second and third. So, looking for some help there. Back in a minute. Now pitching
on the mound now for the Twins. Danny Kulom
bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So we’ll see how it works out. Lao at the plate. Golden opportunity right here. And there’s a foul ball. Second and third, one away and we’re in the top of the fifth. Squirts away a little bit.
Nothing happening on the bases though. off the mark there. Now one and two.
One ball, two strikes. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Now it’s the DH Yandi Diaz. He is singled and he has fly to left. it on the ground to short on to France and that is that. So the Rays strand a pair. They’re up two nothing. And we’re back. Bottom of the inning. And now it’s Christian Vasquez. And that’s outside ball one. Well, these twins doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. Starter’s leash has to be getting tighter with his pitch count where it is. But so far, he’s been really effective in this one. And it is two and one. You know, sometimes it just takes getting to the bullpen in order to be able to score runs. And that might be the case today. Ground ball right side. Aranda, he steps on the bag and that’s the first out in the bottom of the fifth. Oh,
he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Back to the leadoff spot and the Twins lineup. Byron Buckton now at the plate. That one finds the zone and that’s strike one,
man. 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a low end fast ball for some pitchers. And that one upstairs. Ball one.
One out. Base is empty. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. Caught him looking for the K. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Now it’s going to be Trevor Lick and that drops in for a strike.
The guy’s going this good. He’s retired seven in a row. You got to step out of the box. Fake bunt. Do something to break it up.
Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And the count even one and one. Ground ball to the right side. Throws to first out
and the Twins go one, two, three. He continues to roll on the mound as five shutout innings are in the books. It’s the Rays two and the Twins nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark now. Here is Jonathan. That’s a little bit low.
One ball, no strikes. Come on. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Had him way out front of the slur. Junior Camero next to hit for the Rays. Camero struggling on the road this season. Better results at home. First pitch misses. That one ripped but foul. Base is empty. One away and we’re the top half of the six. Next offering is down low. And there’s a ball. [Music] This one in the air right field. Walner has this one sized up. Brings it in. Two away now. Up next for Tampa Bay.
Two out. Space is empty. And stepping in is the speedy Jake Mangum. One for two. Just missed 10. That one off the bad part of the bat. Just a lazy fly ball. Walmer brings it in with a nice running grab. No runs, no hits, no errors. Hard of the order 345 coming up. It’s the Rays two and the Twins nothing. Bottom of the six. And now it’s the switchhitting second baseman Willie Castro. First offering misses badly for ball one. And that one fouled off. That one in there across the letters. Probably the best one we have seen. throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. And that one way outside. Ball two. Ripped on the ground to second. La sends it to first and that’s one out as they get the leadoff hitter in the six. It’s the Brooks Lee.
So now it’s the fourhole hitter Brooks Lee. Fouled off. He was late. Little tardy on that fast ball. He’s going to have to get it going a little quicker. Get that front foot down. That one missed. One-1 the shortstop takes a ball. Next offering is downstairs.
First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. One down. Base is empty. Popped in the air. Left field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two down.
First base. And now Ty France. Fly ball down the line and that will drop. Foul. swings through that one. And
it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider.
Ah, that’s strike three and the third out. So, we take a break. Twins retired in short order. They trail things here. Two nothing. Now
now a right-handed arm out of the bullpen. Cole Sans.
He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers. So he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump.
Here’s the center fielder. fast for a strike. Sans in his third season. He throws a cutter, a fourseamer, a splitter, a slur, and he works in a sinker. And that one is downstairs. And that’s ball one. And a foul ball. Battling here as he fouls it away. [Music] That one 95 to finish him off. Matt Thice digs in now.
Went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. Another strike. Some movement in the Twins bullpen. Griffin Jacks warming up for manager Roco Baldelli. Thunderberg getting loose as well. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Chance to strike out the side. Now you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game.
Walls in the box now. No balls in a strike. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. And that one got a piece of it. Well, he was right up on the plate. So, even a small misfire was enough to send him to first.
So, two down now. And here is Josh Low. One for three. And that is out of play.
Waltz the runner at first with two gone. And there’s a breaking ball that drops in there. And a swing and a miss. That pay is his third of the game. One left for Tampa, but they’re on top two nothing. [Music] Back in Minnesota, set for the last half of the seventh. Now it’s the right fielder, Matt Walner. This pitcher has done a good job of disrupting the hitter’s timing with a mix of pitches and changing speeds. You want to keep that front foot inconsistent for the batter. Their swings are hesitant, and that’s exactly what you want on the mound. Next offering is fouled back. Seems like the hitters are struggling with their timing today. Kind of caught in between that sharp fast ball and the nasty slider. I’d like to see him settle on a consistent pitch. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. [Applause] Got him. That’s his eighth strike out of the game. Well, just a great job of playing catch with the catcher. Exactly where the catcher set up is where he threw that pitch and probably fooled the umpire a little bit because there was no budge at all. And now Kevin Cash out of the dugout and ready to make a move to the bullpen. Ryan Pepio won’t go any further. Only two hits allowed for him. So, a great effort. And we’ll be back after a quick break to tell you about the new arm. Joe Rock on a pitch out of the pen here. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. Here’s Royce Lewis. Struck out on just three pitches last time. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. That one’s back there. Pulls it in on the warning track.
Man, he hammered that one to center. I thought it was out of here, but when just absolutely killed it. So, up next, Harrison Bader has grounded out a couple of times. In there at the knees. It’s 0 and one. Pitching has been pretty dominant in this one, but you got to be careful not working with too big a lead. They could get right back in this ball game if you’re not careful. Just off the inside edge. Swing and a miss.
Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. Breaking ball inside and the count’s even at two.
Two strikes. Strike three. Got him with the sweeper. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Rays two and the Twins nothing. Back at target field. We’re the top of the eighth and now Brandon
Laauo. Sans back to work.
That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. [Music] And strike two. And that’s downstairs. It’s a ball and two strikes. bows that off to the left and will do it again. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. [Music] spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another and that one misses up and in. And the count is even. Two and two. That’s down and in.
Really good take, especially with two strikes. out. Swing at the full count offering appeal to third. No, he held back. That’s ball four.
Second walk of the game for him. And he’s been really patient at the play. A game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. and a foul ball.
Well, these Rays, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. They’ve hit seven line drives already, and even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. Nobody out. Runner at first. Foul ball still a one and two count. [Music] He goes down looking. [Music] Stepping in Jonathan 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. Here comes the pitch. Runner breaks for second. Swing and a miss. Throw to second. Tag out at second.
Man, I see him trying to be aggressive right there late in this ball game. Try to add on to that lead. You know, I really like the thought, but it just didn’t work out that time. Nice job by the defense right there to keep things right where they are in terms of the score. Line to second. Snagged on the bounce. Castro sends it to first. Out number three. Rays held in check here, but they hold the two nothing lead. Kevin Kelly into the game. He’s pitching on two days rest. Number 49, Kevin. So, here’s Christian Vasquez. Pitch is in the dirt and it’s one and0. Tampa Bay’s bullpen with some action. Pete Fairbanks warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Close but called the ball. Two and 0. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. on the ground to the left and foul ball. Well, don’t expect too many more high fast balls. This is a good sinker ball pitcher and sometimes they can make mistakes trying to pitch up in the zone. Look for him to stay down around the knees to be effective. gets a piece and stays alive. Got him looking for the strike out. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. So, the bullpen doing a nice job backing up the effort from their starter.
Yeah, we’ve seen some pretty excellent pitching out of this staff so far. I mean, they’ve come in ready to do their job and get outs. They’ve been pretty tough to get to in this one.
Byron Buckton the next to hit. First pitch and he just misses.
One ball, no strike. Lifted in the air right field. Low has it sized up. He makes the catch and there’s two down. The designated hitter number Trevor Lick the next Twin up to hit. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. Come on. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. And that’s in for a strike. Well, he’s gotten ahead with two pitches down in the zone. He has plenty of options right here. He can go up, he can go away, he can add velocity, he can subtract. Hit in the air left field. Mangum under this one. He makes the grab and the inning is over. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Cody Thunderberg.
Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Junior Camro getting ready to hit. Junior and that one in there at the knees for a strike. One. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Griffin Jacks getting loose out there. [Music] Hit in the air. Center field. Buckton under it, makes the catch, and there’s one down. Now it’s the switch hitting outfielder Jake Mangum. And first off is fouled off. [Music] misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. lined and that’s a base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single.
Well, I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. And now the center fielder swinging a foul back that’s out of play. and the lefty with the 01. Pulled hard, but it’s a foul ball. This is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball’s got to be hit extremely hard right at them if they’re going to have a chance to go for a double play. outside corner. Got him looking.
Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. So, next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Matt Th 0 for three in this one.
Step off, throw to first, and he just got his hand in there. Ruer takes off, pitching for a strike. Throw to second out there and the inning is over. The catcher definitely looked ready for that stolen base attempt. Got in position quickly and a strike down to second base to end the inning. Welcome back. And here comes the closer Pete Fairbanks.
Well, he’s the guy they hope to turn to out of the pin to lock down wins. So, this game has gone to plan more or less. Let’s see if he can wrap it up here. And now for the Twins, Willie Castro. The second base and he drops it down the third baseline. Not in time. An infield knock to start the inning. Maybe a little small ball is exactly what the doctor ordered to rev up this offense. And they’ve been pretty quiet all game. So maybe this wakes him up a bit and helps them get on the board. Brooks lead the next twin up to hit and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Tying run at the plate. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. [Music] Breaking ball misses down and away. Little bit high and it’s two and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Next offering misses and now it’s three and two. Let that pitch down. The tying run at the plate. Foul ball and it remains a full count. swing and a chopper and that chance handled. Tags the runner. Plenty of time at first. That’s a double play. [Music] So they’re down to their final out. And next for Minnesota, Tai France 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. And that drops in for a strike. And the slider just misses. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate.
Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way. And it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box, got a pitch he liked, and he got it done. Walner stands in now and watches strike one. Well, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. They’re down to their final strike.
Two strikes. The Twins down to their final strike. got hurt and that’s the ball game. Well, we saw a lot of good pitching and defense in this ball game. And when you have a lowscoring game, it’s imperative that the players stay on their toes, ready to make plays behind their pitcher. And they did exactly that. It’s an excellent win. Everyone goes in the clubhouse feeling really good about themselves.
Two nothing. your final here in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
