He punched out the side with his ninth pay of the day.
Sports 590 the van and the sports radio network. First and second, no outs. Clement squares in the pitch. Punch it toward third. Off the hill. Bachmann bare hands. Throws high. That ball gets away. Coming to the plate by Straw and the Blue Jays win. Ernie Clement, the hero. 43 the final score.
Well, that was a perfect bunt on the third base side of the infield. Bachmann had to field it. Didn’t get a good grip on that baseball. Air mailed it and the Blue Jays win again. And this streak just continues. Impressive part was after four straight balls, Ernie just sticking his nose in there and getting down a perfect bunt. So, but I think competition pays off, but had him out there early today, too. So, it was pretty good.
That’s the voice of John Schneider talking about Ernie Clement’s walk-off bunt, which you just heard courtesy of Ben Schulman and Chris Laroo. The Blue Jays win it last night 4-3 the final score in 10 innings, and today they are looking for their seventh straight win. I’m show Ali. Welcome back inside the Timberbar broadcast booth. Ben Schulman standing by for the call of the game, but I’m sitting right next to Chris Laroo, former major league pitcher here at the Rogers Center. Chris, very entertaining game last night. The Lower Hour of Power continuing here at the dome, but today Max Scherzer hits the hill. The roof is wide open. What are your expectations today? Well, the biggest thing and and I’m I’m not alone in this is will Max Scherzer’s thumb feel healthy after this ball game? And I think that’s the most important thing for the Toronto Blue Jays. Did he look great in his last start? Yes. But he only threw 71 pitches. At the end of this game, we’ll have a chat. We’ll talk about what he looked like. But most importantly, is he healthy?
Max Sher stirring on the bounce. Let’s get to the Bet 365 standings update at Bet365 on popular markets like hits, home runs, and total bases. The Red Sox are 44 and 45 and the Orioles are 38 and 49. Before we bring in Ben Schulman, let’s get to the starting lineup for the Blue Jays. Brought to you by Shell V Power Nitro Plus. Thank you very much, Joe. We’ll go to the Los Angeles Angels managed by inter manager Ray Montgomery. Zach Neto leading off playing shortstop. At first base, hitting second Nolan Shaw batting third, the designated hitter, Mike Trout hitting fourth, the left fielder Taylor Ward with Joan Ellen center field batting fifth. Hitting sixth, right fielder Jorge Solair hitting seventh. Behind the plate, Logan Hoppy. Third baseman Luis Reno bats eighth. And Chad Stevens, the nine hitter plays second base. On the hill for the Angels is 6’7 right-hander Jack Tahanowitz. But for the Blue Jays, getting a new baseball in all white as he steps onto the back of the hill is the right-handed future Hall of Famer, 40-year-old Max Scherzer. On the year, Sherzer no record of 485 erra. He’d pitched 13 innings across three starts. 6’3, 200 lb from St. Louis. Sherzer into the wind, deals to Zach Netto in the first pitch of the day. Here’s a swing and a miss. Strike one. Time of the first pitch. 30:07 Eastern. It’s a beautiful day in downtown Toronto. 27Β° and sunny with pale blue skies overhead. The O1 Detto right-handed hitter takes low. One ball, one strike. Sherzer featuring a four seamer curve cutter change up and slider. We’ll get to the lineup behind him after Neto hits. 1-1. Called strike middle of the plate with a 94 mile perph for Seamer and it’s one and two.
Two pretty good fast balls so far in this ball games from Max Scherer. A lot of life through the zone like you said 94 miles an hour with both of them. One, two, and it hit him. Fast ball ran up and in. Caught Neto I believe on the left tricep and he’s aboard with nobody out. Well, not what you want in that situation, but you could see Alejandro Kirk actually set up and in. He didn’t miss his spot by that much. Just clipped Neto on that tricep. I don’t mind that though. Early on in a ball in a ball game establishing the inside part of the plate. Big lead off first for Neto. Nolan Shaoell up and the pitch from Sherzer lifted out towards shallow left racing in George Springer and he’ll make a one-handed catch off to his left. One down. Let’s cover that Blue Jays lineup. Nathan Lucas leads off today playing center field. Batting second is the left fielder. George Springer daging back in the lineup. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hits third. Shorts stop Bo Bashette bats cleanup. Addison Barger in right field hitting fifth. Alejandro Kirk the catcher hits sixth. Will Wagner batting seventh at first. Ernie Clement at third base hitting eighth and at second base batting nine. Davis Schneider. Mike Trout to the plate. One on, one out. Sherzer deals home and the pitch hit back foul. 0 and one. 95 with that fast ball there at the bottom of the strike zone. Mike Trout just fouling it off. I mean, I know it’s early. It’s a small sample size, but that thumb looks healthy. He did pull himself out after five innings and 71 pitches in his last start. Sherzer’s 01. Hit on a line and down in left field. A base hit. Doning up to second base goes. That one hung up for a moment. Wasn’t actually hit that hard off the end of the bat at Trout. But it’s a second hit of the series for the future Hall of Famer.
Wasn’t a bad pitch. It was a cutter down and away. Mike Trout stays on it. Got it off the end of the bat, but was able to muscle it over the head of Bob Bashette at shortstop and in front of George Springer. First and second now with one out. Angels did not score until the seventh inning yesterday. They’re threatening here in the first. Two on, one out. And the right on right pitch to Taylor Ward. Foul back. Fast ball on the inner half. 0 and one. Another 95 from Sherzer who sat in the 93 94 range in his last outing. John Schneider admitted the stuff was a little bit better than they expected in that last outing. Next pitch in there again at 88 with a cutter 0 and2
and it continues to look good in this outing. He gave up that that base hit to Mike Trout. He hit hit Zack Neto. But the stuff all by itself has looked very very solid so far in this ball game. Sherzer sets high, brings the glove down to his face. Couple looks to second and the O2 hit on the ground foul skipping into the Blue Jays third base dugout. This first inning is brought to you by Armstrong Bird Food. Armstrong Bird Food, the reason birds fly north, beating Blue Jay since 1986. Visit armstrongbirdfood.com. Meadow on second, Trout on first, one out. And the O2 hit on the ground to short. Picked up there by Bette. Fumbles in his glove. Throws to first. Not in time. Everyone safe. Bo Bette couldn’t get that one out of the mid as he was running towards third and throwing back to first. And for now, an infield hit for Ward. Well, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Blue Jays think about taking a look at this. And they won’t take a look at this, but it looked to me like Bobette was just a little bit indecisive. Thought about going to second base. Mike Trout would have beaten that out. Then by the time he decided to throw that ball to first base, it was too late. So the bases loaded for the Angels and the very dangerous Joe Adele is up. Hit a three-run homer yesterday. One out. Sherzer looking in. Deals home. Outrageous call of a ball there. I was waiting for Dan Merzelle to point. That’s why there’s a delay. That pitch was right down the middle. And according to Merzelle, it’s one and0. But I can guarantee that Max Sherzer is not happy about that call. My goodness. One pitch. Same spot. Fouled back. I wonder why Joe Adell swung. Maybe that pitch was in the strike zone. It’s one and one. Charlie Ramos is at first base. Stu Sherwatter could see the first pitch was a strike from his spot at second. And Jordan Baker, the crew chief, is at third.
Man, you are on one today. I like this. He’s fired up to be at the Rogers Center.
It is a great day for baseball. One-1 pitch to Adell. Swing and a miss. Another pitch right down the middle. One and two.
I like that pitch right there. Slowed it down with that curveball. 75 mph. Got Joe Adell way out in front. Sherzer punched out seven in his last start is one two down and away. Two balls, two strikes. Netto on third base, Trout on second, and Taylor Ward on first. One out, top of the first inning, no score. The two- two low ball three. That’s a tough take. Looked like a fast ball out of the hands. That was a slider at 87 just below that strike zone. A good take from Joe Adell. Sherzer sent crowd getting loud for the first time today. And Adele asks for time. That bat should already be over, but a pitch down the middle. Paul to Bald who started off has us now at three and two. Sherzer rocks and offers and it’s outside ball four. So that’ll be a bases loaded walk to bring in a run. One- nothing Angels. Another tough take from Joe Adell. It was a fast ball just off the plate outside. Kirk did a a great job trying to bring that ball back over the strike zone, but it was very clearly a ball. So, one- nothing for the Angels. Jorge Solair to the plate. Veteran right fielder hits from the right side in an open stance. Sherzer steps off before the first pitch.
That pitch count slowly creeping up, too. 17 pitches now in this ball game. 11 strikes, six balls. Pitch home. Foul back. 0 and one. To me, it feels like that’s tough luck for Sherzer, though. You think about back-to- back batters. He gets the ground ball to short. That probably should have got him out somewhere. And then the worst ball strike call I’ve seen this season. I I’m not even exaggerating. The worst ball strike call we’ll probably see all year. 01 pitch hit foul to the right 0 and two a fast ball a cut fast ball down the middle ball to ball it was definitely in the heart of the plate and so Sher backto back at bats could have had very different situations instead it went as an infield hit and a walk 02 count on soair with one out the pitch downstairs one ball and two strikes 20 pitches in the inning so far for Sherzer. He offers home and misses low. Two and two. Blue Jays had to use a lot of their bullpen again yesterday going into extra innings with the Angels. We’ve probably had more of a firm eye on starter pitch counts the last week or so than we have all season. 2-2 lifted out to right field going to tag at third. Trout Barger circles under it makes the catch. Trout trying to score. Chargers throw to the plate in time. Mike Trout called out at home. A double play that will end the inning. Ray Montgomery holding a hand up in the Angels dugout. Will he challenge? Still waiting. And he will not. 92 double play on an outfield assist for Madison Barger. The Angels get a run on two hits. lead one- nothing after the top of the first. on Sportset 590 the band and the sportset radio network. One- nothing Angels. Welcome back to Rogers Center. Blue Jays hitting for the first time today against right-hander Jack Kahanit. 6’7 24 year old from Philadelphia for Kahanit’s 18th of the year. 3-8 with a 5 and a half RA. Nathan Lucas digs in in the all whites for the Blue Jays. The Hanowitz kicks and offers. First pitch heater at 96 for strike one. Welcome to the Timberart broadcast booth. I’m Ben Schulman alongside Chris Laroo. Ahanit’s a sinker baller who will feature a four seamer a lot as well. Slider change and sweeper too. His 01 lined up the middle over the glove of Kahanitz and into center field. A base hit for Nathan Lucas. And if you look back at the numbers for Kahanovich, they’re pretty interesting because his stuff is above average. The fast ball, the sinker, the four seamer, both average about 96 miles an hour. He struck out 25 guys last year in just over 65 innings. That’s some of the lowest strikeout rate I’ve ever seen. It’s interesting to think about how that even happened. It’s like dead ball era strikeout rates. George Springer to the plate. Nathan Lucas on first. Kahanowitz offers and Springer hits it foul back behind him. Fielded off the back stop by the on deck hitter Guerrero. It’s 0 and one
this year. The strikeout numbers a little bit better. 86 innings pitch, 61 strikeouts, but still pretty low. And the walk numbers have come up with more strikeouts against righties. A lot of sinker slider sweeper for Seamer features as well. 01 pitch called strike on a check swing by Springer. throw and two.
But there’s a lot of sink to that fast ball. That one right there was 95 mph. Started on the outside part of the plate, ended up on the inside part of the plate.
Yeah, he’s looking to get you on the ground with that sinker. Got a 51% ground ball rate. O2 hit foul off to the right. Among pitchers with at least 80 innings this year, he is sixth in the American League in ground ball rate. It’s a little JosΓ© Rainy where you see the big fast ball velocity, you think there’s going to be more strikeouts, but it’s a power sinker. Lucas on first, no outs. The O2 line toward right field, moving in. So, freezes, makes the catch over his head with one hand, and there’s one out. So similar to JosΓ© Urania, but I guarantee that if you gave JosΓ© Urania 65 and a third innings, he’d strike out more than 25 for sure. No doubt.
That is that is so strange.
It’s a little more extreme. One out in the inning, one on and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. returns after missing all of yesterday’s game. Fouled a ball off his foot two days ago. Was still dealing with soreness. Hanowitz looking in, deals home. Swing and a hard ground ball through the left side. A base hit into left field. Up to second goes Lucas. Two singles in the inning for the Blue Jays.
That’s a pretty good swing from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Ripped that thing 114 miles an hour just past Zach Neto at shortstop. John Shiner did tell us today Vlatty was available yesterday. And we did see him standing on deck right before Ernie Clemen walked it off. They were trying to stay away from him, but after Andre Jimenez got hurt, Vlatty wanted to make himself available just in case they needed him. Bobette up the pitch. Strike. Bobette a second day in a row back in the lineup. And this is new, Chris. He’s in the cleanup spot. I don’t mind that as long as it’s the top four. Runners on first and second, one out and the 01. Bette pokes it out to shallow right center. This could be trouble. It’s caught by Chad Stevens, the rookie second baseman. Going back, he makes an over the shoulder grab. Nice play. Two down. Chad Stevens was actually staring right up at the sun. It was a really tough play. It shouldn’t have been that tough actually. He was fighting the sun, shading his eyes with that left glove. Pretty nice play over there for the second out. And it was Stevens or no one. The outfielders were not close enough to make that play. Two on, two out. A look back to second at Lucas. And the pitch to Addison Barger outside ball one. Barger the right fielder today coming off an 0 for four yesterday in the series opener. Hanoitz kicks and offers and the pitch is ripped through the right side of the infield into right field. A base hit Lucas around third. He’ll score. Guerrero goes first to third and we’re tied at one in the bottom of the first inning. Well, Chad Stevens, the second baseman, was shaded towards that hole on the right side of the infield. So, there was a big hole up the middle. Addison Barger hit a hard ground ball right past the dive of Chad Stevens for an RBI. And the Blue Jays have runners at first and third now with two outs in this inning. How about that swing for Madison Barger just continues to rake for Barger? His 34th RBI of the season playing in his 65th game. And a chance to add on. 1-1. Two outs. Bottom of the first. Runners on first and third and the pitch to Kirk inside. Ball one. Starting to feel pretty good about a lineup when you’re going to have Alejandro Kirk hitting sixth today. A 304 hitter on the year. 10 bounced over the mound up the middle. Backhanded Stevens steps on second base and ends the inning. A run on three hits for the Blue Jays. Addison Barger ties the game at one with an RBI single. You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Rush Control Center streaming on the

Blue Jays picking up Max Scherzer in the bottom of the first with a run of their own. And we go to the top of the second where Scherzer starts with right-handed hitting catcher Logan O’Hy. Into the wind, the right-hander brings the glove overhead and the pitch low ball one. I’m Ben Scholman alongside Chris Larouch. Show Ali, our host, Nick Blackmore, our producer, Tom Young, and Derek Brandeo, our technical directors. The one offering fouled back one and one. Oh in his fourth season drafted by the Phillies in the 23rd round in 2018. Traded one for one as a minor leaguer in 2022 at the deadline to the Angels for Brandon Marsh. 1-1 swing and a miss. Chases a slider just off the plate. One and two. So, would you say that the Angels won that trade?
I think both sides have have gotten fair value out of it.
Not a bad trade. One, two pitch. Swinging him in. Strike three. First punch out of the day for Max Scherzer as he goes to the cutter in the zone. And there’s one out. Well, he’s really feeling it. You can see the confidence walking around that mound after throwing that pretty good cutter. probably not where he wanted it, but it had a lot of movement. Logan Hoppy was out in front of it. That’s a big first out in this inning, especially with that pitch count. And Sherzer threw 22 pitches in the first and got out of it on an outfield assisted double play. A fly ball to right field to Addison Barger where he threw out Trout trying to score on what would have been a sack fly. Pitch to Luis Renifo. Basketball at 93 on the outside third. Strike one. When Addison Barger is talking about this game, do you think he’s going to mention the RBI single or the fact that he threw out Mike Trout at home plate?
Mike Trout. Yeah, I think so, too. 01 fouled back 0 and2. Ranifo switch hitter, 28 years old from Venezuela. Originally signed by the Mariners, got traded to the Rays, but his whole major league career really has been as a Los Angeles Angel. The pitch called strike three. 78 mph curve on the outside corner and Sherzer takes a stroll around the hill. Two down.
Red Heo didn’t like that call. He’s slowly walking back to that dugout, shaking his head. But that was a perfectly placed curveball right on the outside corner at the bottom of that strike zone. He is feeling it right now. That’s a great pitch to finish off Reanhifo. Two out. Space is empty. 1-1 game. Top of the second. The pitch to Chad Stevens. Swinging a miss. This is a tough assignment for a rookie in his third major league game going up against Max Scherzer. Right on. Right. The 01 at the knees for a strike. Really liking that cutter so far is Sherzer or Kirk especially because he keeps calling it 0 and2. Always have to give credit to the guy back there. The two strike pitch swing and a miss. Strike three. Sherzer punches out the side and we go to the bottom of the second. 1-1 Blue Jays and Angels. Hey, this is Dolan Vo. You’re listening to Toronto Blue Jays baseball on the Sportsnet Radio Network. Matt Sherzer punches out the side in the top of the second. And now we go to the bottom half. 1-1 game. Blue Jays and Angels. Will Wagner leads it off with the pitch from Jack Kahanitz in there for strike one. I’m Ben Schulman alongside Chris Laroo. Will Wagner helped the Blue Jays get their offense going yesterday? He had a double that started a three-run six. The pitch outside and low. One ball, one strike. The Hanowitz, the 67 righty offers to Wagner. Misses outside. Two and one. Will Wagner hitting 208 on the year, 577 OPS, four doubles, two RBI’s. The 2-1 high off the top of Hapy’s glove. It pops over the head of Dan Murzelle, the home plate up. Three balls, one strike. That fast ball there was really nowhere near the strike zone. 97 m an hour. Does have a pretty good arm. That was his four seam fast balls that had about 20% of the time. 3-1 bounced up the middle toward the shortstop net creeping forward. Gloves throws over to first and there’s one down. Now batting number 22 Ernie Club. Let’s welcome our future announcer presented by Rogers. 10-year-old Lincoln from Calon, Ernie Clement. One out, bases empty. Reanhifo in at third in the pitch. Swatted fouled down the right field line. That one slices into the seats out of play. Lament the hero yesterday laid down a bunt where he was trying to sacrifice and just move a couple guys over in the 10th but Sam Bachmann the reliever threw it away a one check swing pitch down and away appeal to first Charlie Ramos says no swing one and one
it’s really difficult to get a sack bunt down when a guy is wild and he’s throwing 99 miles an hour I think we talked about this a little bit after the ball game but just so impressive that he was able to keep his nose in there keep that hand on the bat put down a perfect bunt the 1-1 outside at 97. Just missed by maybe half a ball. Two balls, one strike. Clement batting 296 on the year. The 2-1. He is hit on the ground to third on one hop. Picked up by Ren Heo who tosses to first. in there quickly. Two outs in the inning. Now batting number 36, Davis Snider. That’s our future announcer presented by Rogers. 10-year-old Lincoln from Calon. Is that Miley Cyrus?
It is. It is. I I can’t tell you the name of the song,
but I can spot Miley anyway. Two outs. David Schneider up. Base is empty. One-1 game in the pitch. Fault strike. 0 and one. Schneider got the start yesterday, went 0 for three and then was lifted for a pinch hitter in the ninth. He swings and drills a ball. Foul into the netting down the left field line. Ricochets towards the field. It’s 0 and2.
My goodness. He was all over that sinker at 96. He’s actually out in front of that pitch. That’s hard to do. Way out in front. Infield shifts him to pull toward the left side. The O2 pitch high in the air down the left field line. That’s going to hook foul a little less out in front of that sweeper, but because it was only 85 instead of 96, he still couldn’t keep it fair. That was a hanger though from Kahanowitz right down the middle. Another two strike pitch from the righty. Sails to the back stop. The Hanoit’s a third rounder by the Phillies in 2019. Born in Philadelphia, drafted out of high school in Binmar, Pennsylvania, just about 30 minutes outside of Philly. The one-two swing and a high-fly ball left field. Moving back, Taylor Ward makes the grab in front of the warning track to end the inning. One, two, three for Kahanits in the bottom of the second. And it’s a 1-1 game between the Blue Jays and the Angels after two. Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo. Do you know what it means? taco. A home run hit to the opposite field.
Austin with an oppo taco. His 13th and it’s a one-run game.

His pitch to Zach Neto. Top of the order hitter hits it. Fouled 0 and one. Sherzer had a lot of traffic in the first. Not so much in the second. He punched out the side. The 01 hit on a line toward left field and that’ll get down one hopping into the glove of George Springer. It’s a base hit for Neto. His second time aboard today.
Little bit of a hanging curveball from Max Max Scherzer. Neto doing a good job waiting back and hammering that thing on the line to left field, but the stuff is still good. He just has to locate a little bit better with that pitch and Neto would have been out in front. Netto on first and he can run. 14 stolen bases on the year. He has been caught seven times. Pitch to Nolan Showell. Bald strike. Shoell a great contact on base guy. 362 on base percentage right now. He’s sitting just under 270, but his walk to strike out is really good. 40 walks, 44 Ks. A1 hit on the ground to first. Blocked by Wagner just inside fair territory. He steps on first. Up to second goes Neto with a slide and there’s one out.
Even if Will Wagner comes up with that baseball cleanly, I don’t know if they get Neto at second base. It would have been a really tough throw for Wagner. Good job getting his body in front of that that ground ball, knocking it down, and then just stepping on first base for the sure out. You think they would have got Neto at second?
I don’t think so.
Yeah, that would have been a tough throw.
Tag play over there. Probably not. Mike Trout to the plate. He’s got a base hit today. Neto on second. Sherzer offers home. How that going? One. Welcome to the Timber Mart broadcast booth. Sherzer’s going right after him. A first pitch fast ball on the outside part and they tried to come inside there with that fast ball missed just off the plate. You know, every day it is a privilege to be in this broadcast booth and do these games, but it feels even more so when you get to watch Max Scherzer deal to Mike Trout who hits it foul to the right 0 and2. Just think about the caliber of guys. Two future Hall of Famers were watching duel right now in Toronto.
It’s funny that you mentioned that because I was just thinking that. How cool is this? Two guys obviously not in their prime, but two of the best to ever do it. 17 career at bats for Trout against Sherzer. Four for 17. One home run, 10 caves. The one-two pitch inside, two balls, two strikes. Although Max Sherzer is looking pretty good right now. Might not be in his prime, but he’s got some good stuff out there on that mound.
And granted, Mike Trout has already been aboard four times in six plate appearances during this series. Neto takes off early. The 2-2 low ball three and Neto steals third without a throw. Kirk never had a shot because of the the early jump, so he decided to try and frame the pitch. Well, I think Sherzer wanted that call. He’s actually barking at Dan Merzelle, asking him where that pitch was.
Well, what do you think the odds are? He watched that heinous Joe Adelmiss call from the first inning on an iPad. Going back to the first, if you weren’t with us, Adele saw a fast ball center cut down the middle. Maybe maybe a little bit elevated, 60% up in the strike zone, but right down the middle. called a ball. 3-2 pitch is inside to Trout. Ball four. I don’t mind that pitch there. You don’t want Trout to get that those arms extended and potentially put something in a gap here. Now you can think about maybe a double play. The infield is is moving back just a little bit. They had the infield in when Trout was was up at the plate and Neetto was at third base. Big at bat here. A guy that has 20 home runs, Taylor Ward. 1-1 game. Top of the third inning. First and third, one out. And the pitch to Ward. Bald strike 94 on the upper and inner corner of the strike zone. Ward had an infield single on a ground ball to shortstop in the first. The 01 hit foul. a late swing on a cutter on the outside third. He flips it over the netting right side and Ward is in an O2 hole.
And if you’re Max Scherer in this situation, in this count, your goal is to strike out Ward here. Kirk sets up down and a little bit away. the pitch, fast ball up, ball to ball probably had the zone. But really, what is the zone but a concept to an umpire like Dan Mereltz?
Well, well, Max Scherzer is is probably not as upset as I assumed he would be, but Alejandro Kirk dropped his glove, dropped his head. John Schneider is barking at home plate umpire Dan Miselle right now. That’s a tough call. So, a one-tw count and Sher steps off. I will say in Murzelle’s defense, that pitch was higher than the one down the middle. So if down the middle isn’t going to strike, then probably that one is a little bit too high as well. One, two inside. Two balls, two strikes. And the thing that bugs me about that mis call, specifically the one that just happened a couple of pitches ago, is it’s it’s elevating the pitch count. Now back Sherzer has to work harder to potentially get Taylor Ward out. Two-2 off the end of the bat. Foul to the right.
He’s now thrown three extra pitches. At least three extra pitches to get Taylor Ward out. And think about if he doesn’t get him out then we’re talking about potentially tons of extra pitches for sure.
I’m trying to be positive though. True. You never know. Trout on first, Neto on third. One-1 game, one out. Top of the third inning. The choo choo in the dirt, blocked by Kirk Ball three. John Schneider did mention today it’s been a while since he’s been thrown out of the game. Max Scherzer or John Schneider? John Schneider. It’s obviously been a while. Sherzer. He’s only been ejected a couple times his career. Sherzer sets 48 pitches on the day. His 3-2 outside ball four. There you go. It’s probably the second time today that Dan Merzellis helped the Angels to a walk and the bases are loaded now with one out.
Yeah. And and and again, the the most annoying thing for me, especially if I was in this game, if I was on that mound right now, is just the elevated pitch count because of that missed call. You still can make a good pitch here to Joe Adele and get out of this inning with a double play, but just that pitch count slowly creeping up for Max Scherzer. The bullpen’s going to have to work a little bit harder. John Schneider and Pete Walker are having a discussion right now, probably talking about who is who is potentially going to come in this game after Max Scherer is done. Alejandro Kirk went out to the hill to talk to the starter Sherzer who has three walks today. He’s allowed to run on three hits. Base is loaded, one out the pitch to Adele. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Adele had that puzzling called ball in the first inning that helped him to a walk. and the 01. It fell to the right 0 and2. And again, you’re in an 02 count. The bases are loaded. Of course, you want a double play in this situation, but there’s no guarantees. So, if you’re Max Sherzer, you’re going for the strike out here. Lazaro Estrada is heating up in the Blue Jay bullpen in left field. 02 in the dirt ball one. I’m assuming that’s that’s just a precaution. You don’t want Max Sherzer throwing too many pitches in just one inning. Estrada is also more of a starter really than a reliever. So maybe he needs a little extra time as opposed to your typical reliever to heat up. One, two, hit in the air out to right field. Backing up Addison Barger tagging at third. Neto. Barger makes the catch. Netto coming home. Throw skips in. Offline and it’s a sack fly for the Angels. Up to third base goes Trout. It’s two to one for the Halos on a sacrifice fly in the third.
You could hear the the excitement from the crowd there. Addison Barger obviously throwing out Mike Trout earlier on in this ball game, but Zach Neto has a little bit more speed in his in his career right now than Mike Trout does. and he beat that pretty easily, scoring the second run of the ball game.
Fly ball was also maybe a hair deeper. Here comes Pete Walker to talk to Max Scherzer. And the Rays have a lead right now on the Twins. They’re up 4 to one in the fifth inning. Tampa Bay has scored three frames in a row, including a junior common sack fly on his birthday. 4-1 for the Rays over the Twins. Yankees just getting started against the Mets in Queens. That game is scoreless. Top of the first. Former Met Max Scherzer set with runners on the corners and two outs. 2-1 Angels and the pitch to Jorge Solair. Ball to strike. It’s Mike Trout on third base and Taylor Ward on first after the Joadell sack fly. 01 called strike again. Nothing and two. Little bit of a spinning slider. Probably not where he wanted that pitch, but still a pretty good result. 0 and2 now on Solair. Wide open stance right side for the two-time World Series champer. He looks out to Sherzer. The O2 inside ball one. Solair fly out to right in the first starting that 92 double play where Barger threw a trout at the plate. One, two, swing and a miss. He got it. Solair chases a cutter off the plate down and away. Sherer with his fourth strikeout, but the Angels get one on one hit. They leave a pair on. It’s 2-1 for Los Angeles. Middle of the third. Welcome to the Timber Mart broadcast group. Alongside Chris Laroo, I’m Ben Schulman, show Ali, our host Nick Blackmore, our producer, Tom Young, and Derek Brandeo, our technical directors. 2-1 for the Los Angeles Angels. Bottom of the third inning coming up in the top of the order for the Blue Jays against right-hander Jack Kahanowitz. Nathan Lucas about to step in from the left side. It’s another day in the leadoff spot for Lucas. Two days ago he led off in the Blue Jays 85 win against the Yankees. Kahanoit steals home and Lucas takes a strike. Lucas one for one on the day. Lined the ball over the head of the 6’7 pitcher into center and came around to score in the first. Right on left the 01 pitch. Down and away. One ball, one strike. Big hole on the left side of the infield as well. Shortstop. Zack Neto is shaded up towards the middle. Luis Renifo, the third baseman, is pretty far from the bag, but there’s still that big hole over there. One-1 outside, two balls, one strike. Clearly, they haven’t seen that the Nathan Lucas Freeway runs right there. He chops that ground ball to where a regular shorts stop would be all the time for base hits. Renifo a little further off the line now. 2-1 outside again. Ball three might not matter.
As you were saying that, Renifo was slowly moving towards that big hole. Well, he brought his transistor radios to his back pocket and he thought when in Rome I’ll listen to the home broadcast 3-1 pitch and that is called high. Easily could have had the zone but it’s ball four. Similar pitch that Sherzer didn’t get last inning. There’s some consistency there at a minimum.
And that’s really I know you don’t want to hear this, but that’s really all you can ask for of a home plate umpire this zone. As long as it’s consistent. If I went I looked myself in the mirror. That call and the last call in the third inning for sure are they’re not terrible calls.
Yeah.
The Adele call in the first awful and maybe I need to get over it.
Pitch to George Springer. Ball to strike. Might have had the inside edge. 0 and one. But I’ve made peace.
I don’t think you have.
I made peace.
Okay, we’ll see in about two innings. A one swing and a deep fly ball foul into the second deck left field side. It’s 0 and two.
That’s a change up right there. And George Springer was just out in front of it. Pretty sure that had home run distance. About 100 ft foul though. Springer, the team leader in home runs, 15 of them on the year, also 15 doubles and a team leading 51 RBI’s. The pitch hit on the ground just behind the back of third base coach Carlos Fabas in foul territory. Still no balls, two strikes. Lucas with a lead off first held by Shaa O2 again in the dirt ball one. Let’s go back quickly to the St. Louis Barn Grillil out of town scoreboard. Mentioned the Yankees and Rays games, but the Red Sox and the Orioles playing today as well. Red Sox scoreless in Washington. Orio scoreless in Atlanta. One-two pitch hit high center field and deep. Going back Adele at the warning track. He leaps and it’s gone. George Springer does it again. A two-run shot and the Blue Jays lead three to two in the third. Well, you said it. He does it again. That ball was 97 miles an hour. elevated and as George Springer has done so often over the course of this run, he is demolishing fast balls. He crushed that thing just over the glove of center fielder Joe Adele. Went to dead center field over the 400 side. A 413 ft shot for George Springer. The pitch to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. bounce to the plate. Ball one. Now 16 homers and 53 RBI’s on the year for Springer. The most impressive thing with George Springer right now is he’s just not missing mistakes. That was a fast ball right down the middle. A lot of guys will roll over, mis hit it, but he’s just not doing that. One pitch in the dirt again to Vlad. Two balls, no strikes. And that triggers Oh Hoppy’s brain. He’s going to jump out to the mound and talk to his pitcher. Pretty good. Pretty good. Pretty good count to be in if you’re Vladimir Guerrero Jr. I’m him. I’m getting big. You have a guy trying to throw strikes here in this ball game. He just gave up a home run to George Springer. He doesn’t want to walk the next hitter. He’s probably going to throw something in the heart of the plate here. I’m sure that’s what Logan Hoppy is telling him. Hey, we need to throw strikes here. Let’s not let this inning get away from us. Oh, the young catcher back in the crouch behind home plate from the first base side of the rubber. Jack Kahanowitz looks in at Vladimir Guerrero Jr. base is empty. 3-2 Blue Jays bottom three in the two- pitch. Fouled off to the right. Big hack by Vlad. That pitch was on the outer third though. Hard to turn on. So, it’s two and one. You could tell they were trying to throw a strike there because Logan Hobby was set up right down the middle. Khanitz winds and offers and the pitch is hit on the ground through the whole left side. Second base hit of the day for Guerrero. Both of them grounders in between short and third.
I think that pitch actually ate him up just a little bit. Didn’t hit it all that hard. It was a change up that ran in. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. actually hit that off the end of the bat. Got it through that big hole on the left side. Nobody out in this inning now. And Vlad standing at first base. That change up was right on the corner. I wonder if he wanted it out of the zone if you’re the pitcher. Jack Kahanowitz through a hard change there at 92. Right. He’s pitched to Bobette. called strike.
I honestly think that he got the result that he probably wanted, a weak ground ball, just was able to find that hole.
That change is a pitch that’s been in development a little bit for Kahanoitz. Recently changed the grip because he found one that really mimics his sinker. 01 down and away. One ball, one strike. It was too much of a straight change up before. His fast ball typically is armside run. And now his change up due to a new grip that pitching coach Barry Enight presented him. Runs kind of like a sinker as well. 1-1 outside with a fast ball. Two balls in one strike. Sometimes to get more run on that on that change up, all you do is just flip the flip the seams around and you throw it like a two seamer and not like a four seamer. Maybe he was just throwing that that change up before like a four seamer. 2-1 hit on the ground left side. Long run third baseman Renipo with a diving stop, but he will stay on the ground. Nowhere to throw it. Bette safe at first. Guerrero safe at second. Infield hit. Two on and nobody out.
Jack Kahanowitz is a ground ball pitcher. Induces a lot of ground balls and he’s doing exactly that right now. Probably two ground balls that in another ball game could have been out. He’s getting the results that he wanted, but the the Blue Jays are just finding holes. Mound be meeting right now as Kahanowitz is in some trouble. No action in the Angels bullpen. Just Barry Enright going out there to talk to his young pitcher. Blue Jays started this inning with a walk to Lucas, then a two-run homer. by George Springer. And since two ground balls, like you said, not hit all that hard, but hit to the right spots, have both been hits for Vlatty and Bo. This feels like a good spot for Addison Barger to be in. First and second, nobody out in this inning.
Pitcher on the ropes a little bit. You make a mistake to Barger, he can hurt you. Already has an RBI single in this game. his 34th RBI of the season. A 271 hitter with 11 home runs. The Hanit staring back at Vlad on second. One more look to second and the pitch. Paul tie. That certainly had the top of the zone. It’s fall one.
Thought you said you’ve made peace.
I have made peace.
Oh, with the previous call, not that call.
I’m not going to say every call he makes is great. If he if he misses a call like that, he misses a call. That was a strike. 10 pitch. Line shot foul off to the right. One and one. Look, if you caught me on a day where I wasn’t sick, maybe. But for the second day in a row, I’m still trying to figure out how good my Rod Stewart impression is. So, he’s not going to get my happiest emotions. the 1-1 in there at 96. That’s puzzling because the last pitch called the ball up there was a little lower than that,
but it’s one and two.
So, I said earlier the only thing you could really ask for is some consistency in those calls back there. It’s starting to become a little bit more inconsistent. I don’t think it’s skewed one way or the other though, really. One, two, hopped up. Infield fly rule in effect as Nolan Showell takes over and makes a catch on the right side of the mound. First baseman will give it back to his pitcher Kahano. It’s two down. Pardon me, one down. It’s important that the Blue Jays score at least run here, one run, one more run here in this inning just because of how thin that bullpen is. You imagine that Lazaro Estrada, a guy that has doesn’t have any time in the big leagues, will be in this ball game at some point. You want that lead to be as big as possible. First and second, one out and the pitch to Alejandro Kirk. Check swing liner off of the camera well in front of the first base dugout. Couple cameramen ducking out the way, but everyone’s all right. It’s 0 and one. It hit one of the cameras. Actually, it hit the Sports Center TV broadcast camera. A one hit on the ground to third. Backing up Renifo. Throws to second. One. Stevens to first in time for an inning ending 543. Double play. The Blue Jays get a pair on three hits. Two-run homer by George Springer. makes it 3-2 Blue Jays after three innings. They’re trailing the Astros by 9 and a half games at 43 and 44. And the team ahead of them in their division, the Seattle Mariners hold the final wildcard spot. They’re two and a half back of Seattle. So really in the race right now are the Angels. Pitch to Chad Stevens. The rookie hits it foul 0 and one.
They’re not a bad team. They’ve got some talent on this roster. Got to see Usain Kikuchi for a little bit today down on the field and he has been awesome for the Angels so far this year. It was great to see him. Sherzer’s going to step off the hill as they reset the clock. Almost a bit of a smoky haze drifting in from the left side of Roger Center. Sun shining down on the field and the 01 to Stevens outside by maybe a ball. One ball, one strike. This is the guy you want in this inning. The nine hole in this lineup. Chad Stevens doesn’t have much big league time. You’re at pitch 65 in the ball game. Got to get a ground ball here. Get out of this inning. 1-1 hit on the ground up the middle and into center field. A base hit. First major league hit for Stevens. Going first to third is Oh, hoppy. They’ll keep that baseball. Runners on the corners. One out for the Angels.
And that was actually a pretty good pitch. It was a cutter off the plate outside. Chad Stevens hit it off the end of the bat just weekly up the middle.
That’s too bad. That’s a good pitch. A moment Chad Stevens will remember for the rest of his life. his first major league hit. Eric Young senior, the first base coach, made sure to get the baseball and he’s helped the Angels have a good shot to tie up this game. 3-2 Blue Jays. One out top of the fourth. Runners on the corners.
Not only is it his first hit, but it’s his first hit and it was off of Max Sherzer. Yeah, that’s pretty important.
Insane. Pitch to Neto. Hit foul off to the right. 0 and one. And I’m pretty sure that most people wouldn’t ask after that, what was the exit velocity on your first hit? They’ll just say, who was it offer? That’s it. Honestly, if you know the exit velocity on your first hit, that feels like a little conceited. I think you should just think about the hit. A one just off the plate outside. One ball, one strike. Back on the Angels in their spot in the standings, though. This is a team that’s in position in and around playoff position right now and they’ve dealt with some significant injury this year. Once again, Anthony Rendone has not been a major part of this team. Step off throw to first, just a lobback from Sherzer and a head first dive in there by Stevens. But Christian Moore had been a great story for them this year. Young infielder, he just hit the injured list. They haven’t really had any consistent playing time out of Yan Manada who’s been on the injured list multiple times 1-1 down and away two and one. And then Chris Taylor who they picked up after the Dodgers let him go. He actually had a game or two that was pretty interesting as an Angel. And then he went on the injured list. Not to mention the biggest loss of all, their absolute flamethrower, Ben Joyce out of the bullpen. Should have been their setup guy to Kenley Jansen. shoulder surgery has ended his year and we would be remiss if we don’t mention two as Sherzer steps off the huge loss that Ron Washington not being there has been for the Angels hope the best for him dealing with health issues right now two-1 pitch to Neto Stevens off from first pitch inside a ball throw to second in time tag applied by Davis Schneider Chad Stevens with no argument he pops up and jogs back towards the dugout. Angels are telling him to wait a moment though. They might challenge. They will not. Huge caught stealer.
Heck of a throw from Alejandro Kirk. Another really good throw right to the first base side of second base. Good tag by Davis Schneider right on the foot of Chad Stevens. Actually on the lower back, sorry. That’s a huge out in this inning. Two down, runner on third. The 3-1 Detto strike. So my I guess my question to you is will the Angels be sellers or buyers at the trade deadline?
My 100% honest answer is I don’t know. I think it’s still to be decided.
Knowing the Angels, I think they No, I was I think they’ve fought with less before to be honest. Maybe not a major buy, but I could see it. 3-2 Blue Jays in the 3-2 pitch. Hit on the ground is short. 10ks today for Kevin Gman in seven scoreless innings.
On Sportset 590, the band and the Sportset radio network. Welcome to the Timberart broadcast. Alongside Chris Laru, I’m Ben Schulman. Blue Jays three, Angels two in what’s been an entertaining game so far. We’re going to the bottom of the fourth inning. A lot of traffic for the Blue Jays in three runs against Jack Kahanowitz, but he’s only thrown 51 pitches. Not so bad through three innings, 17 pitches a frame. Here’s pitch to Will Wagner. Hit over the mound. fielded by the shortstop Neto crossing behind the second base back. He throws over to first. One pitch, one out.
And in the last inning when Max Scherzer was throwing, Nick Sandlin was warming up in that Blue Jay’s bullpen. Nobody’s warming up now, but I would imagine when Max Scherzer goes back out, Nick Sandlin might get get up on that mountain again. You never know, though. 72 pitches so far for Sherzer. One out, pitch to Ernie Clement. Up and in. Clement leans back out of the way. Ball one. I think if you’re George, if you’re John Schneider, you’re probably happy with five innings from Max Scherzer.
I think so. 10 called strike. One and one. Schneider told us today he and Max himself along with Pete Walker. They’re still trying to figure out exactly how far to push it. What kind of stuff can he use? How much on the gas should he go as the 1-1 goes way up near the head of a slider that slipped out of the hand of Kahanoit. Ernie spins back out of the way. Two and one. Like in his last start for Scherzer, he comes out pumping 95 in the first inning. That might have been a little too far on the gas pedal. 2-1. Lament hits it off the end of the bat. Uh spinning bouncer to first. Shoel picks it up. Steps on the bag. Two down.
He kind of did that today though.
That that fast ball vo was really good. The last couple of innings it’s been more 92 93 miles an hour, but those first couple of innings he came out with that gas all the way to the metal. And so they’re just they’re trying to see how far can he push it. How many innings does he get out of that? They just they still don’t have a baseline. This is his fourth start and in some ways really feels like his third start as a Blue Jay. Two outs. The pitch to David Schneider hit on the ground toward the third base dugout. It hits off the fence of that dugout and Vlatty is pointing saying, “Hey, you should hit it more to the right where the field is. It’s 0 and one. Two out. Base is empty. 3-2 Blue Jays. Bottom four. A one pitch. Swing and a miss. Gets a chase from Schneider on a 90 mph change. 0 and2.
I think Vlad was actually pointing the other way because in Davis Schneider’s first at bat, he pulled two balls way foul. So, might want to straighten it out just a little bit. In cricket, it would really play. You got 360Β° angle to work with. There you go.
O2 pitch in the dirt ball one. 67 Kahanowitz kicks it offers and misses down and away two and two. You see on the Sports Net TV broadcast Sherzer walking around in that dugout. He looks far from done in this game after four innings and 72 pitches. Although Nick Sandlin has gotten back up. He’s kind of wandering around that mound right now. Two-2 swing and a miss. Strike three. One, two, three frame from Jack Kahanitz. A scoreless bottom of the fourth. We go to the fifth inning. Blue Jays three, Angels two. You’re listening.

Woman and I want to be able to make a difference. Watch inclusive and accessible content on AMI TV or stream now at
amip plus.ca. Hey, this is Chris Facet. You’re listening to Toronto Blue Jays baseball on the Sportsnet Radio Network. It’s the fifth inning brought to you by Dejardan Insurance. Insurance that’s really big on care at dejardan.com/care today. Well, after four innings and 72 pitches, Max Scherzer out of the ball game. Blue Jays leading three-2. And they’ll start the fifth with a new pitcher. Nick Sandlin is on the hill for Toronto. Alongside Chris Laroo, I’m Ben Schulman. Side armor. Sandlin offers to Nolan Showell. And the pitch is high. Ball one. Max Sher went four innings, five hits, walked three, gave up two earned runs, threw 72 pitches, 46 of those were strikes. thought he looked pretty good. 10 fault strike one and one and we’ll wait to see if they have any updates on Sherzer, if it’s a precautionary thing taking him out this early or if it’s something more. You just really don’t know at this point. One-1 outside two and one. Well, like I mentioned last inning, the the velocity on the fast ball was down just a tick in the last couple of innings. Saw a lot of 93s, a lot of 92s. In the first inning, he was 9495. Sandlin with a 2-1. Shoel hits it foul. He was out in front there on a slider. Two and two.
But he gave the Blue Jays a chance to win and that’s really all you can ask for. Hopefully his thumb is fine. And hopefully he’s going to come out of this game healthy and he can continue to increase that that pitch count pitching for a second straight day. Gave up a three-run homer yesterday coming in for Loward. The two Showell pops it up third base side moving toward foul territory and onto the left field turf. Ernie Clement makes the catch at fair territory and the third baseman tosses it around the horn. One out.
That’s a pretty good split finger from Sandland. Down and away. Nolan Shaw was way out in front of it. Hit it off the end of the bat. Ernie Clement actually fighting the sun just a little bit. Makes a nice play for the first out. Shade is covering the outfield deeper but shallow outfield and the entire infield is right in the sun. Sandlin deals home to Mike Trout. Paul Strike. Pitching change to Nick Sandlin brought to you by Home Hardware, the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays. Locally owned, genuinely Canadian. the 01 pitch outside, one ball, one strike. After Trout, we’ll take a look at the St. Louis Bar and Grill Out of Town scoreboard. Some big movement concerning American League East teams, especially in the race game and the Yankee game for that matter. 1-1 high and outside two and one.
Now I’m intrigued. I haven’t looked.
You’re going to have to wait. Mike Trout is batting in front of us, so I’m going to make you wait another 15 seconds. and then we’ll get to it. Base is empty, one out, 3-2 Blue Jays. Top of the fifth, the pitch swing and a high fly ball. Medium depth left center field. George Springer crosses in front of Nathan Lucas and makes the grab. Two down. All right, I got you, Chris. So, the Rays were leading five to one over the Twins. Now, it’s the top of the seventh. Rays still have five, but so do the Twins. A game-tying threerun homer from Cody Clemens in the bottom of the sixth inning has made that a five5 game. And if you go to Queens, Brandon NMO with a first inning grand slam off of Carlos Rodon. And the Mets lead the Yankees 4 nothing. Two outs. The pitch to Taylor Ward. Outside ball one. Well, if I if I was a Yankees fan, I would be going through it right now after the Blue Jays, after yesterday’s ball game. It’s tough to be a Yankees fan over the last couple of weeks.
10 pitch down and away, two and0. Yeah, I’m really feeling for uh
I’m not saying I’m feeling
No, it saying if I was a Yankees fan, I’d be going through it right now.
Oh, they are. Two outs in the 200 count to Ward is hit on the ground to short. Picked up chest high. Bobette pumps, throws over to first in time to end the inning. Nice one, two, three inning. Retiring the meat of the order is Nick Sandlin. Middle of the fifth, Blue Jays three, Angels 2. High fast swinging a miss strike three and punch outs for Gossman
on sports 590 the band and the sports radio network. Blue Jays baseball is presented by Crown Rust Protection. Bottom of the fifth inning, top of the order for the Blue Jays who lead 3 to2 at home. Pitch from Jack Kahanitz lands in the zone to Nathan Lucas and he gets ahead of him 0 and one. Thanks for tuning in and welcome to the Timberart broadcast booth alongside Chris Laroo. I’m Ben Schulman. Right on left pitch bounced high to second base charging in Stevens. Quick glove transfer and throw on to first. And there’s one out. That’ll bring George Springer up to the plate. He’s the reason the Blue Jays lead right now. Hit a two-run homer in the third inning out to dead center field. That turned a 2-1 Angels lead into a 3-2 Blue Jays lead where it’s held since. The Hanoitz offers and Springer hits it on the ground to third base. Waiting on Irano takes it on two hops. Throws wide and Shoell comes off the bag to catch it and apply the tag. Nice play by the Angels. First baseman. Two down.
That was a great play over there at first base. George Springer did everything he could to avoid that reach of Shaunell. He just tagged him kind of on the chest area for that second out. So, two quick outs in the inning on a couple of ground balls. wouldn’t be shocked to see Vladimir Guerrero Jr. take a pitch here after Lucas and Springer combined to see three in the frame. The pitch taken for a strike at 97 inside edge 0 and one.
He took that pitch, but that is a tough tough pitch. A sinking fast ball in on the black part of that plate. The 01 swinging a miss. Comes right back with a slider and it’s 0 and two. He’s got good stuff. Doesn’t strike out many guys, but he has really elite stuff. Feels like he’s a small tweak from striking out a lot of guys given his velocity and frame. 67 righty looks into Vlad with two outs. The O2 hit on the ground foul and only 24 years old. You look at this roster and half of them it’s only Kahanit’s second year, but you’ll read it, you’ll say, “Hey, that’s this guy’s fifth year. He’s 19 years old.” Not actually, of course, but they got a lot of guys who are very young even though they have some experience. So, two pitch up high, one ball, two strikes.
Did Trout make his debut at 18 or 19? Cuz he’s he’s in his 15th year at 33 years old.
19.
19. Can you imagine? I know that’s more I guess less rare now. A lot of guys are making their debuts a little bit younger, but back then that was really rare. one two inside two and two. Now he was drafted at 17 years old. Mike Trout coming out of high school and uh safe to say he absolutely torched minor league pitching to a penis level and then continued that in the big leagues. Two two to Vlad upstairs ball three. Of course, a lot of connection for Vlad to the Los Angeles Angels. His dad was an Angel for six seasons, only second to his time with Montreal and won an American League MVP in 2004 with them the Anaheim Angels. 3-2 pitch on the ground to third, picked up off to the left, Ren Hippo. Crohop tossed to first and it bounces away. Vy turns towards second. He’ll scramble back to first. Oh, hoppy. The catcher slid in to back it up. Think that should go as an error on Renifo. Guerrero safe at first. That should go as an error. Nolan Showell almost made that play on the tough short hop. You have to give credit to Logan Hoppy. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made a quick left turn. Would have taken that extra base, but Logan Hoppy was right behind first base. Was able to pick that ball up and keep keep Vlad at first base. They will rule that. A throwing error on Ren Heo who was saved from an error already this inning by a good play from Shaw. Well, I just got the replay. Shaw should have made that play.
Probably wasn’t a tough throw or a tough pick. Sorry. Pitch to Bobette outside ball one. So Vlatty’s got connections to the Angels. But maybe a little bit less talked about, Bobette has the connection as well. His dad Dante debuted with the California Angels from 1988 to 1990. 10 lined out toward right field, tailing toward the corner on the run. It’s caught by Solair to end the inning. No runs, no hits, one error, one left. 3-2 Blue Jays going to the sixth. You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Rush Control Center.

Get insurance that’s really big on care at dejardan.com/care today. Making his major league debut on the hill for the Blue Jays. Righthander from Cuba. Lazaro Estrada takes over. 3-2 Blue Jays. Top of the sixth.
It’s always fun to see a guy make his major league debut, but this is a tough spot to be in. Up by one run in a very tight ball game. Estrada, traditionally a starter in the minor leagues, gets into the wind and offers to Joe Adell. First pitch hit on the ground to short. A one hopper picked up Bob Bashette. Throws over to first for the out. And I have to imagine, Chris, that’s a huge sigh of relief for a guy making his debut. One pitch, one out off Jorge Solair.
Yeah, that calms the nerves just a little bit. Still got to make your pitch here though to Jorge Solair. Tough hitter. Pardon me. Just got Joe Adele. Now it’s Jorge Soler. I was getting ahead of myself. Solero 0 for two with a double play fly out to right and a strike out. First pitch in there at 95 on the four seamer. 0 and one. We got a bit of a look at Lazaro Estrada in spring training. Got the invite to major league camp this year. The 01 foul back 0 and2. And the one thing that stood out that’s already standing out through three pitches, John Schneider said, “We really liked how much he took it to guys in spring. Was not afraid, was not pitching around. He was going right after people.”
I think that’s the biggest thing in in in any major league debut is just pound the strike zone. You have to throw strikes. 02 hit high down the right field line. Foul and out of play.
And like you said, he very clearly isn’t afraid to pound that strike zone. He seems like he trusts that fast ball. It’s actually a pretty good fast ball. 94 to 96 mph. That’s some good velocity from a starting pitcher.
Pitching change to Estratos brought to you by Home Hardware, the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays. Locally owned, genuinely Canadian. O2 swing and a miss. He got him. Strikes out Solair for his first major league strikeout. And there are two down in the inning.
How about that pitch? A really good slider. It started on the plate, ended up off the plate. Solair swings right through it. Two quick outs in the first major league inning for Cuban righty Lazaro Estrada. He winds and offers to Logan Hoppy. Down and away. Ball one. The first ball he’s thrown in the big leagues came after five straight strikes. It’s been an up and down year for Estrada at Triple A this year. 26y olds made 15 starts. 10 swing and a foul tip. 475 ERA in 60 innings. Good punch out numbers for the right. But the run prevention has been up and down. At the end of the day, that is the name of the game. 1-1 hit back foul. One and two. I wonder if Estrada is thinking right now, man, this is easy. I mean, you’ve been in a spot making your major league debut. Are you thinking anything at that time or you just kind of freaking out trying to make sure that your heart rate isn’t too high? I
think I was thinking, man, I can’t wait to see that paycheck. Two down, bases empty. 3-2 Blue Jays. Top of the sixth. The pitch hit on the ground. No. Caught just above the ground on the line by Ernie Clement at third to end the inning. One, two, three inning in Estrada’s major league debut. Middle of the sixth. Blue Jays three, Angels two. Show Ali and Nick Ashorn will have Blue Jays talk following today’s game broadcast. Logan O’Hap was being waited on for warm-ups, and I’d have to imagine that might have been a pitch clock violation. We’ll wait and see what the count starts at for Addison Barger. What we do know is the score is 3-2 for the Blue Jays over the Angels. And Jack Kahanowitz, the towering starter, is still in for LA. Looks like no violation. Addison Barger leading off. Alejandro Kirk and Will Wagner to hit this inning as well. The pitch chopper foul off the foot of Barger bouncing down the first baseline. 0 and one. And the Blue Jays are doing it again. They’re piecing together another really well pitched ball game. The Jays have won six in a row. First time since 2023. 01. Up and in. One ball, one strike with a chance to win seven in a row. Have not done that since July of 2022. Nobody’s getting loose in that Blue Jays bullpen. So, I’m assuming that Estrad at least has the seven.
One-1 pitch outside at 97 miles an hour. Two and one. Strata a starter in the miners. Probably count on him for a little bit of length out of the pen. The pitch to Barger called strike two and two. While pitching maybe hasn’t been at the forefront for the Blue Jays this season as much as the last two years, you got to pitch to be able to win games in streets. And the Blue Jays have gotten enough out of their pitching for sure. Two-2 bounced up the middle of the infield. Backhanded by the second baseman, Stevens. He throws on to first and there’s one out.
I think George Springer would have something to say to that.
He would. And he’s great. So is Barger. But talking to Ray Montgomery, interim manager of the Angels today, he had mentioned that the Angels playing a lot better has largely come down to pitching consistency. not necessarily dominating every game, but being in every game because of your pitching. Ironically, the last Blue Jays lost, they gave up 15 runs, one out in the pitch to Alejandro Kirk and it’s high ball one. Well, also interestingly, you win in the playoffs with pitching, right? So, the Blue Jays have to find something and I think they will. I think Ross will get that done. 10 pitch to Kirk. up and in. Two balls, no strikes.
But that’s for the postgame show.
That is what we can do is look at the St. Louis Bar and Grill out of town scoreboard. Two count to Alejandro Kirk. One out. Base is empty. 3-2 Blue Jays in the bottom of the sixth. The pitch down and away ball three. Still 55 between the Rays and the Twins. An okay start today for Taj Bradley. three earned runs and five and two/3. Kind of a bullpen day for the Twins. Travis Adams pitched the bulk going four innings in his big league debut. Next pitch to Kirk is high. Ball four, a four pitch walk. Elsewhere on the St. Louis Bar and Grill out of town scoreboard, the Yankees are on the board. It’s now 4 to one. Actually, I think it just got to 5-1 for the Mets over the Yankees. Jazz Chisum hit his 15th homer of the year. And then I believe Starling Marte just hit an RBI single to make it 5-1 Mets over Yankees. What inning is that?
Uh second.
Oh, so still early. Aaron Judge still has some time. Mound meeting right now. Ray Montgomery out to the hill and he is going to lift Jack Kahanitz, the Angels starter after five and a third. Runner on first. 3-2 Blue Jays. One out bottom six. And for more out of town score updates, let’s go to today’s host, show Ali.

He’s not going.
Pitching James brought to you by Home Hog, the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays. locally owned, genuinely Canadian. First pitch to Will Wagner, misses low ball one. Connor Brockton, a 6’6 right-hander, sixth major league season. He’s a 30-year-old from California. Throws a change up as his lead pitch. Will mix in a four seamer and a cutter as well. Next pitch is low in the dirt there with the change. Two balls, no strikes. 200 pinch swing and a miss. Pulled the string with that change and a big hack there from Wagner out in front. Two and one.
That’s a beautiful change up. 82 m an hour. Looked exactly like a fast ball. 21st appearance of the year for Brogden. 564 erra his 2-1. Hit in the air out to center field. Moving back, Adele jogging toward the track. He makes the catch. Still on the turf a little bit shaded toward right center and Kirk retreats to first. Two outs.
Another change up from Brogden. This one right down the middle. Will Wagner just missed it, hitting it a little bit off the end of the bat. Doadell maybe about 20 feet in front of that fence in center field. So Connor Brogden needs one more out to get out of this inning. A former Philly and very briefly a Dodger pitched once for the Dodgers in 2024. The pitch called strike. Does he still get some sort of World Series recognition? Pitched once.
Absolutely. I think he does.
Absolutely. I know guys that have pitched zero times that have World Series rings. You just have to be on the roster at some point. A one outside, one ball, one strike. He threw one inning for the Dodgers last year. Gave up two runs.
And he has a beautiful World Series ring sitting at home somewhere.
One more than all I
You never know.
I don’t think my pitching career is burdening him right now. One-1 pitch. Foul tipped one and two. Alejandro Kirk on first. 3-2 Blue Jays. Two outs. Bottom of the sixth. Brockton also has an NIA World Series title from his college days at Lewis Clark State College. Next pitch fouled off by Clement. Nia, a separate athletics organization from the NCAA in the US. looked at is probably lesser than competition wise from division one NCAA, but in terms of NIA against junior college or division 2, division three, it’s probably pretty comparable. One, two, scorched up the middle, a line drive, skipping into center field. Up to second goes Kirk. Safe at first is Ernie Clement. Two on, two out.
I’m not going to ask the question you think I’m going to ask about Brogden and how he ended up at NIA. Oh yeah, we ran through that yesterday. Although Lewis Clark State College has a fair number of major league alums, 19 major league alumni from Lewis Clark State College, including Seth Brown, who earlier this year was an athletic before they let him go. And Cam Boozer, who’s on the injured list, but was active this year for the White Socks and last year for the Red Sox, pitched to Davis Schneider, called to strike 0 and1. I’m pretty sure that they are the powerhouse of of NIA, not UBC. Don’t get mad at me if if I I think Lewis and Clark State is the powerhouse. I don’t know if you’re joking or not.
I was a little bit. UBC is a good school. It’s not
01 pitch outside one and one. They do have a good baseball program. I’m actually not sure if they still compete NIA, but they were a a huge exception of a Canadian school getting to compete in US collegiate athletics. Jeff Francis went to UBC.
There you go. The 1-1. Schneider takes it for a strike. A change up that just clipped the inside corner. Half the ball in the zone, half the ball out of it. One and two. Five strikeouts in four scoreless innings for Eric Lowry
on Sports Net 590 The Van and the Sportset Radio Network. Welcome back to downtown Toronto. Blue Jays are leading the Angels 3-2 at Rogers Center. Alongside Chris Laroo, I’m Ben Schulman. Show Ali, our host today, Nick Blackmore, our producer. Tom Young and Derek Brandeo, our technical directors. Second inning of work for the right-hander Lazaro Estrada in his major league debut. First pitch is outside with a fast ball. Ball one. Couple defensive changes for the Blue Jays. We’ll get to them shortly, but the next pitch to Luis Renifo is called a strike. One and one. What did you think overall of Estrada’s first inning of work in the big leagues?
Well, I thought it was great. I think he’s pounding the strike zone. He’s getting ahead of guys. Obviously, really important that he got that first out on just one pitch. That really calms the nerves just a little bit. I wouldn’t be surprised if one guy gets on. If you see action in that bullpen, I’m sure John Schneider wants to win this game.
One-1 pitch hit foul one and two. Well, the defensive changes would suggest so for sure. It’s kind of the Blue Jays bolstering their defense now in the last three innings of this game. Up three to two. Davis Schneider just hit, so he’ll be taken out of the game now. He’s due up in nine spots, as far away as anyone from hitting. One-two pitch. Ran Heo lines one out to center. Miles Straws out there now, but it drops in in front of him for a base hit. So Schneider has been lifted. Straws into the game. Straw goes into center field. That pushes Nathan Lucas into right field. Addison Barger goes from right to third. And Ernie Clement goes from third to second. So Blue Jays upgrade defensively in the outfield and in the infield in a couple of spots by making that move. Bren Heo has two stolen bases this season, so you probably don’t have to worry about him too much over there. He’s been caught five times this year. Keeps trying.
Pitch to Chad Stevens. Shows Bunt. Pulls it back and takes it high. Ball one. Looks like the Angels are thinking of moving Rean Heo over with a bunt and giving the top of their order a shot to drive him in. Stevens one for two today. picked up his first major league hit in the fourth off Max Scherzer. 10. He squares. Stevens bunts it back to the mound. Backhanded Estrada. Throws over to first for the out. Up to second base goes Ran Heo. Maybe a slim chance they could have got the lead runner as Strata seemed to peak to second and then say I’ll just take the sure out at first.
Well, that’s a really smart play from a young pitcher. Not messing around, going for the sure out. And you can guarantee that Alejandro Kirk was saying 111 on that play. not messing around, getting the out and you move on to that next hitter. Although it is the top of the order now for the Angels. It’s Zach Neto who’s one for two with a hit by pitch. A stolen base and two runs scored. The pitch outside ball one. Surprisingly, the bullpen for the Blue Jays doesn’t have anybody up standing on that mound yet. Yeah, there’s a couple guys sitting in the upper level, but no one actually with any motion yet. Swinging bunt on the 10 by Neto. Kirk calls for it. He’ll toss down inside the line to first. Up to third goes Reno. A big out there for Estrada. Tying run is now 90 ft away, but there are two down in the inning.
Now the big job for Alejandro Kirk is just be a wall back there. You don’t want to give the Angels anything, especially with that guy standing at third base. Big at bat here for Estrada. and Nolan Showell now standing in that in that batter’s box. Showell 0 for three on the day, but a threat to come up with a base hit at any moment and that’s all he needs to tie the game. In the sun is Estrada on the hill kicks and offers to Shanowell and the pitch is high ball one. Sun is starting to dip below some of the high-rise buildings off to the left field side of Rogers Center. Left side of the infield and parts of where the second baseman Clement plays are covered in shade. 10 pitch inside nearly hit the right leg of Shaell. Two balls, no strikes.
You think Estrada has peaked in that on deck circle yet?
I think he knows.
I’ve peaked and it’s Mike Trout. It’s the three-time MVP and future Hall of Famer Mike Trout. 19 pitches so far for Astron inning and two/3s into his major league career. 20 is lined out to right field and down in right center. A base a hit. Reno in to score. Shoell around first with a game-tying RBI single. 3-3 in the top of the seventh. I was thinking to myself when he fell behind two and0 there’s there might be a chance that they just put him on and move on to the next guy even though it’s Mike Trout or at least try to pitch around him that that fast ball was elevated but not elevated enough and and Nolan Shawn a very good contact hitter hits a pretty good line drive in front of Nathan Lucas and scores that tying run of the ball game three-3 game two outs top of the seventh Mike Trout up the pitch breaking ball freezes Trout. Strike one. No one had scored since the third inning until that RBI single by Showwell. And after an extra innings affair yesterday, we have a tie game here in the seven. A one to Trout. Hit foul off to the right. And quickly Estrada ahead of the future Hall of Famer 0 and2.
Well, I know I know we’re not there yet, but
you love free baseball, don’t I do love free baseball. Looks like Jos Fermine will come into the game next for the Angels. He’s loose in right field. O2 line foul to the right. Still no balls and two strikes.
That was a backup slider. A little spinner on the inside part of the plate. You could tell that Mike Trout was just trying to protect there. Fooled a little bit by that backup pitch. Shoell leading off first held on by Will Wagner. The right on right pitch to Trout. Foul tip strike three. Lazaro Estrada strikes out Mike Trout in his major league debut, but he does give up one on a pair of hits in the seventh and it’s a tie game once again. 3-3 is the score at the seventh inning stretch. on Sports Net 590 The Fan and the Sports Net Radio Network. New ball game as we go to the bottom of the seven. at Roger Center. Thanks so much for tuning in. Alongside Chris Laroo, I’m Ben Schulman. 3-3 between the Blue Jays and the Angels as Ray Montgomery and the Angels make a pitching change. Brought to you by Home Hogwart, the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays. Locally owned, genuinely Canadian. Blue Jays face hardthrowing righty rookie Jose Fermine for a second straight day. Nathan Lucas leading it off. Luis Renhifo moves in and off the line in case of a bunch from the left-handed hitter. The pitch fast ball at 94 called strike 0 and one. We saw 9798 at times from Fine yesterday.
Tough situation to be for the young Jose Ferine. 23 years old just his 15th ball game.
01 fouled back. Nothing in two. But like Estrada did, he’s doing a good job just pounding that strike zone. Fine came in yesterday. He didn’t actually give up any runs of his own, but he was the pitcher on when some of Kyle Hendrick’s runs came in in that sixth inning. 02 pitch ball to ball. Nathan Lucas had started to walk back to the third base dugout and that pitch was called a ball. The Angels dugout is not happy.
I mean, how could you be happy? The batter thought he was struck out and the umpire disagreed. Now the one two fouled off. It’s not been an easy day for
up here. That’s a borderline pitch. That’s not a pitch right down the middle.
No,
it could go either way, but optically that’s not great.
They got to tell Nathan Lucas, hang in there for a second. One, two, is golfed out to center field. Moving toward left center. And coming in now, Joe Adell makes the catch with one hand. One out.
Well, I can tell you this much. Homeplayed umpire Dan Miselle is very happy that Nathan Lucas just flew out.
Yeah. One out in the inning. 3-3 game. We’re going to go to the St. Louis Bar and Grill out of town scoreboard in one second. But first, George Springer coming out for the Blue Jays. Already has a two-run homer today. He’s one for three. Right on right the pitch. Low ball one on the out of town scoreboard. Some games getting closer, some games not getting closer. The Yankees have scored one more against the Mets. Austin Wells with a homer. It’s 5-2 Mets. Bottom of the third at City Field. 10 in the dirt. Two balls, no strikes. You also have Tampa Bay and Minnesota going to the bottom of the ninth in a five game. And Harrison Bader was the walk-off hero yesterday. We’ll see if they can come up with another walk-off win today. The Twins two up. Springer takes the strike two and one. You got the Orioles and the Braves tied at three. Jordan Westber and Tyler O’Neal both homerred in the top of the third for the Orioles. Matt Olsen responded with a solo shot in the bottom of the third. That game currently in the fourth. Two-1 to Springer. bounced to the plate, ball three. And then you have for a second straight day, the Red Sox just whacking the Nationals. A sevenrun third for the Red Sox. They’re up nine to one that game in the fourth inning. They scored 11 runs to win 11 to2 yesterday did Boston in the nation’s capital of the US. 3-1 his line left field base hit for Springer and he’s aboard as the go-ahehead run with one out in the bottom of the seventh. All of our out of town scores brought to you by St. Louis Bar and Grill. And you’d probably imagine that George Springer is trying to take second base in this situation. It’s a good time to steal. Even though you have Vladimir Guerrero Jr. up at the plate, I would still at least think about taking second base. Feels like something that could be debated going into this inning between John Schneider, Demar Hale, Don Rattingley. Pitched to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He was taking all the way on the first pitch and he takes strike one on the inside edge.
You also have to think about count about things like that. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is two for three in the ball game. So he’s obviously seeing the baseball well right now. Wide open right side of the infield. 01 pitch hit foul. 0 and2. Vlatty’s been on all three times. He’s two for three. Two singles and he reached once on an error on a bounce throw by Luis Ranifa. Even to add to the complication of this, Springer probably has a perpetual green light. Remain steps off. Being one of the better Blue Jay base Steelers of the last couple seasons to a certain extent, you’d imagine he makes his own decisions on when he goes and when he doesn’t. Springer takes his lead off first, one out and the pitch. Hit back foul. Big hack by Vlatt. He just missed a center cut fastball at 98. He was all over that pitch about belt high. Just fouled that thing back. You could tell that George Springer probably isn’t going to steal second base. He hasn’t really seemed a little seemed antsy over there. Obviously for me thinks differently. He steps off, throws to first. Springer back in with a dime. One thing that George Springer is is incredibly selective in a good way with when he steals. 10 for 10 this year. He was only thrown out once all of last year. 02 lined down in right field. A base hit. Springer stops at second. He was watching it the whole way. Solair was on it quickly. And Solair tosses it back into the infield. Two on with one out.
And now you can make the argument if George Springer had stolen second base, he probably would have scored on that base hit from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. I know that a lot of people, a lot of baseball people don’t like to to try to steal a base with the best hitter in the lineup. You don’t want to take the bat out of their hands, but you have a good base dealer like George Springer standing at first base. Why not try? No doubt. No doubt. Translator plus pitching coach Barry Enright going out to the mound right now to talk to the Angels hurler Jose Fermine. First and second for the Blue Jays. 3-3 game, one out, bottom of the seventh. And the best runners in scoring position hitter on the Blue Jays about to come up now. The cleanup hitter in this lineup, Bobette. That’s a big group standing on that mound right now.
You have entire infield, catcher, pitcher, that’s six. Translator, pitching coach, that makes it eight. And then the home plate umpire Dan Merzelle who looks to have had a little bit of a discussion with the pitching coach Barry Enright on his way back to the plate.
Ah, you can’t be that upset. Nathan Lucas ended up flying out. And for as many calls that have gone against the Angels, probably about the same number gone against the Blue Jays. It’s been a weird zone, I’m not sure it’s actually had that big of an impact on the game. 3-3 pitch to Bobad down and away ball one. mentioned his prolific hitting with runners in scoring position, batting .407 this year with runners in scoring position and he does have Springer on second and Guerrero on first. The 10 popped up foul first base side tracking over backtracks and makes the catch for the out. took a bit of a V- route to the ball coming in and then moving back, but he made the play. A huge out, a popup foul, caught that first and there are two down. I like this matchup right here. Fine’s got a good fast ball, mid to upper 90s. And as we’ve seen, Addison Barger breaks against guys with mid to upper 90s fast balls. Barger soft mean yesterday bounced the ball up the middle for an RBI fielders choice and reached because there was an error as well first pitch to Barger low ball one is one for three on the day an RBI single in the first Jays in a three-3 tie with the Angels two outs bottom seven the pitch chopped foul right side. One and one. Long-haired Barger looking down, setting his feet with his Nike cleats. Back left foot is close to the plate. He stands on the toes of his lead right foot in a wide open stance. 1-1. Down and away. Two balls, one strike. That’s a great take. That was a slider just below that strike zone. Logan Hoppy, the catcher, actually pointed out at Fine, letting him know that was a good one. mean set at the chest and the 2-1 in the dirt bounces off the glove of Ohapy and pops up in the air. Up to third base goes Springer. Flatty into second on a wild pitch. Two in scoring position with two down. Oh, got a piece of it, but it went straight up about 10 15 feet, giving Springer and Vlatty enough time to advance. And now with first open and Fine already behind three and one, the Angels will intentionally walk Barger to load the bases.
That’s probably the smart play. Although now if you’re Fine, you’re forced to throw a strike. That’s the go-ahead run standing at third base. So you can expect that Alejandro Kirk will get something in the heart of the plate, something he can drive. Kirk go for two with a walk. The pitch bald strike just got a piece of the inside edge. A backup slider there. 91 0 and one. 41 RBI’s on the year for Kirk. Bases loaded, two down, a one pitch on the outside corner at 97. That’s a really tough sequence if you’re a hitter. Up and in with a slider and then down and away at 97. That one too. Homeplayed umpire Dan Merzelle calling time. Firm mean was set before Kirk was alert to her. Something that they’ve cracked down on this year after pitchers like Max Scherzer would speed guys up dealing home as soon as they became alert to the pitcher. 02 hit foul back behind the plate. out of play. Normally, I would say this is a tough spot to be in 0 and2 with a guy that has pretty good stuff, but Alejandro Kirk has shown us over the course of this season that he’s actually just more comfortable with two strikes.
Yeah, he arguably prefers it. Hitting 310 and 02 counts. The O2 is grounded foul. I mean, two strikes is one thing. There are 3-2 counts. There are two two counts where you don’t want to go to three and two. So, you give a guy a good pitch. He’s hitting 310 in no ball two strike counts this year,
which is an almost impossible situation. So for him to be hitting over 300 in that in that count is pretty incredible. 02 again and it’s line foul off to the right. He was a little bit late on a 98 mph fast. Hit it hard, but it sailed almost into the concourse in the right field corner foul.
He just really cuts down on his swing. You could see that that last swing was a perfect example. It was a tough fast ball and he just chopped it. Foul staying alive.
The pitch hit fouled to the right again. He’s making for mean work. He’s fouled off four straight O2 pitches. That last fast ball was 99 miles an hour.
It’s about the most you’ll see from for me.
Yeah, it’s a pretty good right arm out there. Bases loaded, two outs, tie game. The pitch hit on the ground to third. A hesitation and picked up on the short hop by Renifo. The third baseman throws over to first and ends the inning. He looked a little uneasy, but Renifo makes the play and the Blue Jays do not score after a pair of hits and a walk. They leave the bases loaded. It’s a tie game. 3-3 going to the eight. You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local family.

Hi, this is Ernie Clement and you’re listening to Toronto Blue Jays baseball on Sportsnet Radio Network. Welcome back to downtown Toronto. Alongside Chris Laroo, I’m Ben Schulman. Appreciate you tuning in today for this Saturday matinea. Eighth inning between the Blue Jays and the Angels and nothing to separate these two teams right now. The score is 33. Lazaro Estrada in his major league debut comes out for a third inning of work. Traditionally a starter in the minor leagues. He’s thrown 24 pitches through two innings allowed two hits and one run. His pitch to Taylor Ward. Breaking ball for strike one. Not the traditional approach for the Blue Jays here. Going with a threeining guy in the latter stages. A one. Bounced one ball, one strike, but maybe just a little bit of a bullpen reset for the Blue Jays who not only have used the relievers a ton, but just unfortunately had to put Jimmy Garcia back on the injured list after one appearance off of it. 1-1 foul tip. One and two. I guess the question you you ask yourself if you’re John Schneider, do we need this game? Yes. But do we need a healthy bullpen more? Probably. And I think that’s that’s proven here today with with Estrada in his third inning in a tie ball game. The one two lifted out to center field and deep moving back. Straw backpedaling toward the track. Makes the catch a couple feet in front of it. One down. It’s a pretty good pitch there from Estrada. His 28th pitch of of this outing. He continues to just pound that strike zone. Something that’s so tough to do, especially in a major league outing. You just trust your stuff. You trust that it’s good enough. And he seems to be doing that so far.
And in fairness to our discussion a second ago, it’s not like they’re punting. This guy’s looked pretty good.
Yeah, he’s got good stuff, especially for a starter. His pitch to Joe Adell. Hit back foul. Big rip at 94. A little bit elevated, but in the zone 0 and one. Let’s go over to the St. Louis Bar and Grill out of town scoreboard where the Blue Jays have had a little bit of a gift. The Rays blowing a lead for the second straight day. They were up 5-1 today. They lose to the Twins 6 to five 01. High and outside one ball, one strike. It was, stop me if you’ve heard this before, a walk-off punt. Brooks Lee putting down a bunt that ended up scoring Byron Buckton to win the game. 1-1 check swing. Pitch was outside. One ball, one strike or pardon me, two and one.
Now, if you’re John Schneider, the Rays lose. Let’s say hypothetically the Yankees lose their ball game.
Do you want this game more or do you kind of take the foot off the gas a little bit? I think neither. I think it’s the same. Yeah. 2-1 hit on the ground right side. A sliding stop. Clement spins, throws to first. Back to Dig. Will Wagner two down claps from the pitcher Estrada. It doesn’t get much better than that from Clement and Wagner.
I mean, well, you said it. Ernie Clement made an incredible play ranging to his left in that hole. But how about Will Wagner, a guy that doesn’t play first base that often with the really tough scoop. I mean, that’s just a great play all the way around. Fifth start at first base for Wagner. Clement’s not at second much either. And they both made that play look like they’re there every day. Pitch to Jorge Solair. Swinging a miss. Strike one. Two outs in the top of the eighth inning. 3-3 between the Blue Jays and the Angels.
Clement’s not at second base very often, but he’s good everywhere.
He is good everywhere. 01 swinging a miss. So, and two. But what you were asking about raise Yankees results. I still think, as much as people might punch their radio when I say this, I still think you’re too early in the year to really think about that. It’s great the Blue Jays are in the lead in the division. 02 down and away, one ball and two strikes. There’s still 70 odd games to go. Which doesn’t seem like that much, but it’s a lot. It is.
Teams can be out of it right now and make the playoffs and vice versa. the one two outside two and two. I I just think you have to manage the way that you want to manage your team every day for right now. You can worry about what other teams are doing. I really think late August, maybe not even until September 1st. Two out space is empty and the 2-2 low ball three. And let’s not forget that the health of your bullpen bullpen is is paramount to a postseason run for sure. All of our out of town scores today were brought to you by St. Louis Baring Grill. 3-3 game in the eighth in Toronto. New baseball for Lazaro Estrada who wipes his left hand on the left side of his pants. Slips that left hand into his glove. He grabs for some dirt with his right hand off the top of the hill. Full counting two outs. Infield shifted to the third base side with the right-handed hitting Solera. The payoff pitch lifted out toward left field. A high pop up that the shorts stop Bette calls for on the left field turf. He makes the catch near the line and it’s a one two three top of the eighth. Nice threeinninging major league debut for Lazaro Estrada. 3-3 game middle of the eighth at Rogers Center. You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo. Do you know what it means? Oppo Taco, a home run hit to the opposite field.

Entertaining. This is just the beginning. All new episodes of America’s Got Talent Tuesdays 87 central on City TV. This is Toronto Blue Jays baseball on Sportset 590 the fan and the Sportsnet Radio Network. Bottom of the eighth at Rogers Center. 33 game between the Blue Jays and the Angels. Alongside Chris Laroo, I’m Ben Schulman, new pitcher for Los Angeles. A pitching change brought to you by Home Hardway, the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays. Locally owned, genuinely Canadian. Left-hander Reed Detmers is pitching for a second straight day. And a new hitter for the Blue Jays. Will Wagner is out. To avoid a left-on left matchup, the Blue Jays will go to Lao Jimenez off the bench. Wagner’s day ends at 0 for3 and Jimenez faces the flamethrowing Detent who threw a perfect inning of relief yesterday in the eighth punching out a pair including getting George Springer.
I mean it’s pretty incredible that Detmer’s erra is now under four. At one point was above 10 when he gave up three to the Blue Jays without recording an out back in early May. He’s the third reliever for Ray Montgomery’s club. Left-hander winds and offers and Jimenez takes the over top curve at 74 for strike one. Demers will gas up the fast ball into the mid to high 90s averaging 95 on his four seamer. Next pitch is a fast ball fouled back. 0 and2 Angels inter room manager Ray Montgomery mentioned today Demer’s is feeling a lot more comfortable in his role now and is just going after guys 02 in the dirt one ball two strikes said earlier in the year he was still in a starter mindset of not showing you everything trying to navigate his way through instead of in Montgomery’s words jamming it down guys throats 1 two foul tip. Strike three. Breaking ball gets the foul tip from Jimenez. And there’s one out.
And he has that kind of stuff where he really can just come right at you and trust that his stuff is better than your swing. And obviously he’s been doing that for the better part of a month and a half now. And that RA is is quickly down below four like we talked about. And the stuff is just it speaks for itself. The fast ball is up to mid to upper 90s. One out the pitch Ernie Clement in the dirt ball one. Clement near hitting near 400 against lefties this season. Hitting near 300 overall 10 on the inside edge at 96. It was inside and then it ran back over the plate. One and one. The wind in the pitch. Bald strike. one and two. I’ll tell you, he might be a reliever, but he still works at his starter pace. Reed Demer, he gets the ball, he gets on the hill and he gets back to it. This time he took a little pause, pondering what he wants to go with before the one-two. His pitch outside check swing by Clement. That pitch also high. Two balls, two strikes. I don’t know for sure, but I’m assuming that that’s the kind of pace that you enjoy.
I think everyone
the starter pace. Yeah. your Mark Burley’s, your Roy Halls, your Greg Maddoxes. You want that kind of pitcher. Two-2 in the dirt. Three balls and two strikes.
Good at bat so far from Ernie Clement. Fighting back into this count. Sits at three and two now. Took a tough pitch there just below that strike zone. One out, bases empty. 3-3 game. Bottom eight. Demer’s offer zone. And the pitch hit foul. Still a 3-2 count. Blue Jays missed a big opportunity to score last inning. They had the bases loaded with two outs and could not knock in a run. Now they’re getting a tough lefty. 3-2 again. It fell once more. Flipped over the screen to the right. A foreign fast on the outside edge.
Luis Renifo is playing right next to that foul line on the third on the third base side. Obviously no doubles. They don’t want Ernie Clemen standing at second base with less than two outs. Rachu again line to left field and down for a base hit. Sailed over the head of the shorts stop netto. Ernie Clemens aboard with one out.
I mean that’s just a professional at bat. Took some tough pitches. Fouled off some tough pitches and then he got his mistake a fourseam fast ball about belt high right down the middle and he drilled that thing into left field for a base hit. Lament on first. Miles Straw to the plate. First time he’ll hit today after defensively replacing in the nine-hole and slotting in in center field for the Blue Jays.
Logan Hoppy is now out on the mound having a chat with Dead. They’re probably going over the scouting report figuring out if Ernie Clement is a threat to run. He’s not really a threat. I would be shocked if he tries to take second base here. Here’s what I will say. I I agree with you. I don’t think there’s a straight steel happening, but Miles Stro does seem to be one of the preferred hitand-run guys for John Schneider due to his high contact ability. At the same time, Dead has sw and miss stuff, so you might not want to call a hit and run in this kind of matchup. One on, one out. Dead staring at first, offers home. And it’s a breaking ball that drops in at 73, strike one. I would still take a chance, especially with how thin this bullpen is. I’m sure John Schneider has that in the back of his head. He wants this game to not go 11 or 12 innings. The 01 swing and a miss. Back foot slider at 90 and it’s nothing and two. Four seamer slider curve sinker for Demmer’s 25-year-old from Illinois 2019 Atlantic Coast Conference pitcher of the year pitching for the Louisville Cardinals. His O2 hits sharply to third. Eats up Ren Heo who still picks it on a hop. Throw to second. Not in time. Reno gloved it near the face. It knocked him over and I think he threw to second cuz that was the only base his throw could make it to. Safe at first is straw. Safe at second. Clement the go-ahad run is in scoring position. No challenge from the Angels.
Yeah, that’s a really tough play for Ranifo. One hopper fell to his backside a little bit, but you have to give credit to Ernie Clement hustling to second base, beating that by about a half a step. It’s a pretty nice play though over there from Red Heif. Straw credited with a single. Two on, one out. Infield moves in a little bit. Pitch to Nathan Lucas. Swinging a miss. Strike one. They’re not really in in case of a bunt. More at double play depth. Trying to make sure they have the time to double off a guy with enough speed like Lucas to beat out a ground ball. The pitch hit back foul. 0 and two. Tough left on left matchup for Lucas with no options off the bench for the Blue Jays. Andre Jimenez hits left and might not be available today and Tyler Heinman is your other catcher in case Kirk needs a substitute.
I’ll tell you what though, there’s a big hole on the left side of that infield. We talked about this earlier. He loves to shoot that hole. The O2 hit off the handle. A fly ball to center field backing up Adele. He’ll make the catch. Clement stays at second. Straw still at first. Two outs. As it’s been all week, a big spot is going to come right into the lap of George Springer. First and second, two down. Bottom of the eighth. 3-3 game. Springer has two hits today, a single and a two-run homer. Go ahead run is on second base and Ernie Clement. An add-on run in first and Miles Straw. Dead’s deals home and Springer takes up an inval one.
You don’t need a home run in this situation and I’m sure that George Springer knows that. Just get the barrel to the bat or to the ball, sorry. Get it to the outfield and Ernie Clement’s going to score.
A lot of space on the right side of the infield. Stevens, the second baseman, playing up the middle.
The 10 lofted foul right side over the screen out of play. One
actually with that swing. I’m not sure George Springer knows that. Trying to go big fly. Little bit late there on a fast ball over the middle at 96. Braden Fischer warming up in the bullpen in left. The 1-1 hit in the air center field. Adele going back. He has room. Stops in front of the track, makes the catch, and that will end the inning. Two hits for the Blue Jays, but they leave two on. It’s a three-3 game going to the ninth. You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local family-owned crowd. Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Lazaro Estrada remaining in the game for a fourth inning of work in his major league debut. 3-3 score and his first pitch cut on and missed by the number seven hitter in the order, catcher Logan Hoppy. 0 and one.
I like this move. I I mean obviously he’s confident out there. He’s throwing strikes. Why not let him come out?
A starter by trade, his 01 pitch has hit foul 0 and2. Not only is he used to pitching multiple innings, he’s been incredibly efficient through 36 pitches across his first three innings. Averaging 12 a frame. He allowed two hits and one run. Braden Fischer is waiting in the left bullpen and ready. The O2 swinging a miss. He got him over the top curve. 74 strikes out Ohapy, one out in the top of the nine.
That’s just good stuff. It looks like he’s been doing this in the big leagues for seven or eight years. Just flips in that really slow breaking ball at 74. He’s nodding his head. All kinds of confidence out there. 26-year-old from Cuba. He’s got some gumption out there on the mound. He’s pitched to Luis Ranho. High ball one. Reanho is switcher batting left. One for three today. And he did have the first hit of two off of Estrada in the seventh. Came around to score as the tying run. The one outside. Defensive changes by the way because Lao Jimenez hit in Will Wagner’s spot. Clement moves from second to first to cover Wagner. Now at second base is Leo Jimenez. 20 hit on the ground up the middle. Backhanded. No. Fore forehanded by the second baseman. Jimenez throws over the first. Two down. And yes, that is now three positions today for Ernie Clemens in one game. Started at third, moved over to second, and now at first. By the way, it’s just that easy for Estrada. Falls behind two and0. Throws a fast ball right down the middle and he gets a weak ground ball for the second out. He’ll face a new hitter in the latter stages of this game. Late night, Lamont Wade Jr. is in for the Angels. Known for his dramatics in his time with the Giants. First pitch, ball to strike, a curve, freezes the left-handed hitter. 0 and one. Has not been a great year for Wade. Let go by the Giants and then dealt over after a DFA to the Angels. The 01 swinging a miss. 0 and two. He’s got some pop though. 18 homers as a platoon player in 2021. 17 as a platoon player in 2023. 02 count. Base is empty. Two outs. Top of the ninth. Estrada winds and deals. Swing and a miss. We’re headed to the bottom of the ninth inning here at the Rogers Center. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. You up next with the call. Here’s Ben Schulman and Chris Laroo.
Thank you very much. So, in this tie game, the Blue Jays looking for a walk-off. And all that stands in their way is one of the most dominant closers in the history of Major League Baseball. Henley Jansen brings his 462 career saves onto the Rogers center mound for his second straight day. 6’5 right-hander from Curishel looks in at Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Vlatty is three for four. Jansen kicks and deals. Guerrero takes low. Ball one. There’s the patented cutter from Jansen. Miss low at 95. He’ll throw mostly cutters. Every once in a while, sinks his fast ball and he has a bigger moving slider as well. 16th season for the 37y old. Hesitation 10. Vlatty backs out, takes 93 on the inside edge on the double leg kick from Jansen. One and one.
I’m wondering if Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was just taking until until Jansen threw a strike there or he just wanted no part of that hesitation. We’ll see if Jansen goes back to it here. One-1 inside regular motion that time, but he missed armside with a slider. Two balls and one strike. Jansen came in in the identical spot yesterday. 3-3 score in the ninth and he went one, two, three with a pair of strikeouts. 2-1. Fouled off two and two. It was the same part of the order, too. was 345 in the order. Although yesterday he faced Bette Barger, Kurt. Today it’ll be Guerrero Bette Bart 22 called strike three 95 down the middle. Vlatty made a reaction like it was a little outside so the fans move but that pitch center cut and there’s one out. Kenley Jansen was actually shaking his head when he was coming set and I’m wondering if that threw Vlad off at all. That’s that’s pretty rare to see a pitcher changing his mind as he’s coming set. One out. Jansen sets near his right cheek and the pitch to Bobette. Fouled off to the right. 0 and one. New second baseman for the Angels. Kevin Newman is in after Stevens was hit for with Lamont Wade in the top of the ninth. 3-3 game bottom nine and the O1 sail to the back stop. Pitching change to Kenley Jansen brought to you by Home Hardware, the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays. locally owned, genuinely Canadian. Two taps to the plate for Bobette. Brings his black bat up to his right shoulder with one out. The 1-1. Fouled off to the right. One and two. Another slow motion that time from Jansen who will change his mechanics pitch to pitch. Although tough to get a guy like Bobett off balance, his timing is really the best part of his offensive game. Roof is closing at Rogers Center. We’re in the latter stages of this game. The one two fouled off to the right. Good at bat here from Bo Bashette. Fouling off some tough pitches. That was a 95 mph cutter. Kind of right down the middle, but still a tough pitch when it has that much cut to it. One, two again. Swinging a miss. He got him. Slows it down with the slider below the knees. Two strikeouts for Jansen. Two outs here in the bottom of the ninth. And the last hope for the Blue Jays is Addison Barger. You go back to last season, Jack Kahanitz, who started today for the Angels, made his start against the Blue Jays where he was in line for the win. Addison Barger on August 23rd in this building hit a walk-off home run against the Angels. Jansen’s pitch. Bald strike. Now, it wasn’t off of Kenley Jansen, but rather Roansi Contras. Lero and Barger went back to back in the ninth inning to win it for the Blue Jays. 01 foul tipped. Back swing might have caught the catcher hoppy as well. Barger turns to apologize. So and chew. Jansen a strike away from sending us to extras. Three-3 game, two out, spaces empty. The O2 swinging a miss. He got him. Kenley Jansen punches out the side and we will go to the 10th inning. The Blue Jays and Angels still tied at three. We’re headed to the top of the 10th inning here at the Rogers Center. Automatic runner time. Here’s Ben Schulman and Chris Laroo. Thank you very much, Joe. And a new pitcher into the game for the Blue Jays. It’s the right-hander Braden Fischer in a pitching change brought to you by Home Hardware, the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays. Locally owned, genuinely Canadian. Same as last night. Kevin Newman is the automatic runner at second and it’s the top of the order for the Angels in an identical spot yesterday. They did not even advance. Newman 90 ft with the top of the order up. Fisher to Zach Neto squares to Bunt and Bunts threw it 0 and one.
This is a good guy to have in this ball game right now. A guy that has a high strikeout rate. Braden Fischer has struck out 34 guys in just 24 and a third innings. Two and a half RA for the rookie righty. Corners are weigh in. Neto squares on the 01 and Neto bunts it off himself. Foul. Not a guy used to sacrificing a star player for the Angels. It’s 0 and2. But also really tough to bunt that curve ball. Has just straight downward action to it. Doesn’t stay in that strike zone very long. You can see just how uncomfortable he is trying to bunt that baseball. Imagine he’s swinging away now. A look to second by Fiser and the O2. Neto squares, pulls it back, and it’s off the plate down and away. They really want to get this bunt off. Needto was thinking about punting with two strikes there. One and two.
I don’t know about that decision.
I mean, if it’s your nine hitter, maybe.
Yeah,
I am surprised to see them want to bunt that badly. One, two pitch. Now, Neto doesn’t square and he lines one foul down the left field line. Well,
I think the most surprising thing for me was not that you’re bunting 02, which is still not a great decision in my opinion. It’s how uncomfortable he looked on the on the first two. You expect him to just flip the switch and be be good with the third one?
Yeah. And he’s a good hitter. May as well let him swing now, which they have. One-two pitch. Hit in the air out to center field. That pushes back Straw going to tag at second base. Newman. Straw makes the catch just in front of the track. He’ll throw to third. Newman is jogging forward and gets in there without a slide. So Neto does the job in a way advancing the runner. And Newman is on third with one out. And now you have a good contact guy up at the plate. Nolan Showell. You’re Braden Fischer. You’re still going for the strikeout. Obviously an infield popup. Something like that would be a great thing as well, but strikeout is the number one thing. Shoell came up with the two out RBI single in the seventh. That has this game tied at 3-3 in the top of the 10. Infield moves in. Runner on third, one out. Fischer rocks and offers. Breaking ball inside. Ball one.
Alejandro Kirk has to be a a wall back there. It’s a go-ahehead run standing at third base in a 3-3 ball game. 10 hit on the ground, fielded at the mound by Fiser. He bounced off to the left of Coral. Check third and threw on to first for the out. Huge play for the Blue Jay right-hander. Two down. Just there’s just so much confidence out there from Braden Fischer. Normally, you’d see a guy make that play and not really know what to do. He immediately turned to third base and made sure that that runner wasn’t going any anywhere. Such a a savvy move by a young kid. And now the Blue Jays will not let Mike Trout be the reason that they win or lose this game. They’re going to intentionally walk Trout, putting him on first. runner on third still with two outs. And they’ll let Fiser battle with Taylor Ward.
I think that’s the best thing to do. Even though Taylor Ward is still a very good hitter. He has 20 home runs this season.
And one of them is one of the greatest players of this century. Although the overall season numbers for the two not that far apart. Two outs, roof still closing. And the pitch to Taylor Ward is a breaking ball that is called a strike. Might have been a little high on the curve. It’s 0 and one. Ward today one for three. An infield single, a walk, a ground out to short, and a fly out to center. 01 foul back 0 going two. Three ball game. Runners on first and third. Two outs. Top of the 10th. And two strikes on Taylor Ward. Fischer pitch high with a fast ball at 97. One and two.
I like that they elevated the fast ball there because in an 02 count, if you bounce that breaking ball, it has a chance to be a wild pitch. With that elevated fast ball, there’s no chance of that run scoring on on anything in the dirt. The one two on the ground is short. Bette moves over underhand flips to second and that’s a scoreless top of the tenth for Braden Fischer. Automatic runner will be the winning run for a second straight night. The Blue Jays great moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921.

Thank you very much. Show pitching change for the Angels brought to you by Home Hardware, the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays. Locally owned, genuinely Canadian. Ghost Runner on second, like Show mentioned, is Addison Barger and Alejandro Kirk is at the plate. Ryan Zephr John, the pitcher, with an inside move to second. Barger back in. No throw. Zephr John with an erra just above six this year. He’s pitched in 37 games in his second big league season. First pitch to Kurt down and away. Ball one. Roof now fully closed. The 10 down and away. two and a rain in the area. So this once open air beautiful day has turned into more of a night feeling with the lights on and the dome closed just the flap open in left field. Arger on second the winning run two pitch Kirk takes it down and away ball three. Kirk not much of a puncher so they’ll have him swing away and actually now down 3 0. They’re going to intentionally walk, which gives the Blue Jays more of an opportunity to lay one down. Leo Jimenez coming up.
Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if they ask Leo Jimenez to punt right here. Exactly how the Blue Jays won yesterday. First, they’re going to bring in a runner for Alejandro Kirk. Tyler Heinaman will come in and run for Kurt. And Lao Jimenez stepping up more than likely to bunt. Blue Jays had a bunt for Ernie Clement. Sam Bachmann threw it away. The reliever yesterday and Miles Straw scored to win it. Barger on second. Heinaman on first. Corners way in and the pitch. Jimenez squares, tries to bunt toward third and hits it foul off of himself. 0 and one. Nolan Showell is at least even with the mount if not further as Jimenez squares. Although Jimenez is not trying to bunt that way. He’s desperately trying to bunt toward third. What do you think about What do you think about Jimenez pulling back and just smacking a baseball towards Nolan Sha?
In theory, I like it. In actuality, I think that’s real risky. Early square before the motion. Now the 01 foul tipped on the bunt into the glove of Ohapy. It’s 0 and2. And you imagine at this point Lao might just be swinging away.
Yeah, that’s the best move here. I never loved when managers give an O2 bunt sign, especially the way Leo Jimenez has looked. The first two two pitches him squaring around. He really hasn’t looked that comfortable. Lao Jimenez is about to get a pitch clock violation. He’s been called out. Well, we’ve spent a lot of time today focusing on Dan Merzel, not by our choice. So, let’s spend a little more an extra innings. He’s going to give Jimenez a violation. And John Schneider’s going to go out and talk to the home plate umpire. Well, I’ve told you this before. In big situations like that, maybe even let’s say seventh inning or later, eighth inning or later, I think that something like that should not happen. The outcome of a ball game should I mean, that’s just ridiculous. You you have to
you have to agree with me that even though it it might have been a pitch clock violation on that play, I don’t think it should be a pitch clock violation in my opinion.
If it wasn’t as important a part of the game, I’d talk about it more. But let’s just go to Ernie Clement, who swings and pops one foul out of play. 0 and one. All right. Well, he’s given us time. I tend to agree here. the the alert to a pitcher is not something with a clear objective definition. Plenty of times during games, guys are underhanded swinging with 7 seconds or less on the clock and it doesn’t get called. To me, it’s a bit ridiculous there to call it with already two strikes on a guy in extra innings. But given the missed calls that hurt the Angels, maybe Miselle’s looking to make it up a little. 01 to Ernie Clement. hit on the ground softly to first charging in. Shotwell waves off the pitcher. Steps on the bag. It’s second and third now. Two outs. Still a big chance for the Blue Jays to win it. And honestly, the last thing I want to do is keep talking about this umpire today because he’s become way too big of a part of the game. So, let’s focus on the players on the field. Second and third for the Blue Jays. 3-3 game. Two down and Miles Straw coming up for Toronto. Robinson Pena called up today is warming up in the Blue Jays pen and left. Isle Straw looking to end it. Zephrine rocks and deals and the pitch is a strike 0 and one. Barger on third. Heinaman on second. 3-3 bottom of the 10th. The 01 inside nearly hit straw. One ball, one strike. Blue Jays have not scored since the third inning. They’ve left a lot of runners on. Eight left on between the fifth and the eighth. 1-1. Lifted just beyond the infield right side. Second baseman Newman out there in shallow right makes the grab and we will go to the 11 3-3 game Blue Jays and Angels. You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Rush Control Center. Great moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921.

Blue Jays baseball brought to you by Crown Rust Protection. Our game here at the Rogers Center is tied at three. We’re headed to the top of the 11th here at the Rogers Center. Automatic runner time continuing. Here’s Ben Schulman and Chris Laroo.
Thank you very much. So, the Blue Jays have been so entertaining recently, they said, “Hey, let’s do another threehour affair.” So, for the fifth straight day, the Blue Jays in a pitch clock era world. We’ll go over the 3-hour mark and why not? Free baseball at Rogers Center. It’s been a fun home stance so far. Blue Jays are looking to win another series and a seventh game in a row. 3-3 top of the 11th. Still Braden Fischer for the Blue Jays. Automatic runner for the Angels is Taylor Ward. Joadedell to the plate. 15game hit streak on the line for the right-handed hitter that’s 0 for two. The pitch fouled off of Tyler Heinman, the new catcher. Immediately a bruise on the leg of Heinaman as he comes into the ball game. It’s 0 and one. Adele with a walk, a sack fly today. Also two ground outs. And for the Blue Jays, there’s a good chance their whole bench has been used with Heinaman running for Kirk in the bottom of the 10th and now catching for him in the 11th. 01 fault strike. They do still technically have Andre Jimenez on the bench, but we were told it was unclear whether he’d be available today before the game started. He did not look comfortable limping around yesterday as he went first to third. A look to second by Fiser and the O2 popped up right side foul. Heinaman tracking it. So is Clement. The first baseman Clement makes the call and the catch. Big first out as Ward stays at second.
That’s what you want in that situation. You either want an infield popup or a strike out. And Braden Fischer got the popup. Bernie Clement with a nice play. Looks like he misplayed it just a little bit, leans back, makes that catch, but that’s one out in this inning. It’s been an interesting game. The Blue Jays have gone from Sherzer to Sandland to Estrada to Fiser. Second inning of work for the rookie. his pitch to Jorge Solair gets a check swing on a pitch down and away. Ball one. And while Lazaro Estrada did technically give up the tying run in this three-3 game, he was great in his major league debut. Four innings of one-run ball 10 called strike. One and one. That should have reset the bullpen except we’re in the 11th now. So,
and Braden Fischer has to throw his second inning of the ball game. So obviously he’s going to be down for the next couple of days. Robinson PΓ±ena is ready and left if they need him. 1-1. Solair checks his swing on a pitch down and away. Appeal to first base. No swing says Charlie Ramos. Pretty much a full house still here. They poo Ramos, although I think he made the right call. Two and one. Well, maybe he didn’t. It was close. It was close. 2-1. Bald strike with a curveball perfectly placed on the outside corner. Two and two.
I mean, that pitch right there is gross. So, Solair having a quick question for Dan Miselle, the home plate umpire. But that is as good as it gets. Down and away right on that corner. Just so much vertical drop to it. Choo choo down and away. ball three through the harder slider in the high8s and missed. It’s a full count. Soler is 0 for four today. Fly out, two strikeouts and a popup with Ward on second. Fischer looks back, offers the 3-2, and it’s a check swing on a pitch in the dirt. Appeal to first, no swing, says Charlie Ramos. So, it’s a walk for Jorge Sole.
I don’t mind that. You want to throw something out of the strike zone. See if Jorge Soler will offer at it. We haven’t seen a replay yet. We don’t know if he actually did swing or not, but no, he didn’t. Not even close.
The other one, but maybe that one. Definitely not.
Braden Fischer wanted that call. You could see him yelling in at Dan Mariselle, but he’s wrong on that one.
Well, right or wrong, Miselle’s taking a lot of heat from both dugouts today.
First and second, one out, three-3 game. Logan O’hapia, the pitch to the Angels catcher. is a hair low. Ball wide. Fisher staring in. I think he thought that one had the zone. Oh, one for four. A single to left field. Two strikeouts and a line out to third. The one pitch hit in the air to shallow center field. A hesitation now a sprint in by Straw and he gets there in time to make the caps. Lots of rain for the 2022 Gold Glover. And there are two downs. Well, for a split second, I thought that would drop in, but there should be never a doubt with Miles Straw standing in center field. He comes sprinting in and makes that play pretty easily actually for the second out. He has been a revelation in center field with Daltton Vo injured most of the year. There are very few guys that the Blue Jays could have had that wouldn’t have been a big drop off from Baro and he is one of those few guys. First and second, two down. Switch hitter Luis Renifo up. 3-3 game in the top of the 11th. Fischer deals home. Reanhifo takes a strike.
Pitch might have been high.
You know who else has been surprisingly good, at least to me anyways, is Nathan Lucas in the outfield. Great in the corners and he has held his own in center field. 01 bounced and Heinman picks it, throws down to second, but it bounces over to second base and a head first time back in by Ward. Bobette did the right thing going down to one knee not worrying about the tag and just making sure that he caught that ball and Heineidan you could see lip reading from up here him saying sorry about that boat good job as Bette just played it like a ground ball. So Ward still on second on first. Two outs in the inning. One to Renhifa flipped foul over the netting left side. One and two. Looking ahead to the bottom of the 11th. It’ll be the top of the order up for the Blue Jays. And it would be big if they could just need to score that automatic runner. 3-3 game. Two outs. Ward on second. Soler on first. Fischers. One, two. Swing and a miss. Big yell from the rookie Braden Fiser. Two scoreless innings in extras for the right. It’s 3-3 middle of the 11. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is apo. Do you know what it means? taco. A home run hit to the opposite field.
Austin with an oppo taco. His 13th and it’s a one-run game.

You can text us as well. 590590. Name and location. The people’s text line always open. Standard data and messaging rates may apply. Blue Jays baseball brought to you by Crown Ross Protection. This game’s tied at three. We’re in the bottom of the 11th here at the Rogers Center. Top of the order up. Here’s Ben Schulman and Chris Laroo. Thank you, Joe. Still Ryan Zephr John for the Angels who’s pitched to Nathan Lucas who squares, bunts it, pass them out. Straw up to third. Lucas safe at first. Borners crashed a little too far. And Lucas thread the needle in between Zephr John and the third baseman Ren Heo. First and third, nobody out.
Well, Renifo was crashing and then he thought that Zephr John would make the play and potentially throw that baseball getting Miles Straw at third base. So, he stopped and went back to third base. Zephr John didn’t make the play and that ball kind of just rolled to where the shorts stop normally would play. What a break for the Blue Jays really.
Infield in, outfield in. A fly ball would win it. First and third, no outs. The pitch to George Springer. Up and in. Almost hit him. Ball one. Often you’d walk the guy here and load the bases. But up next is Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The 10 lifted foul out of play. One and one. Angel’s outfielder or sorry outfielding coordinator, third base coach Bo Hoarder was telling the outfielders to come in. So all those outfielders right now are playing shallow. Can only be as deep as they can reasonably throw out Miles Straw. The 1-1 down and away. Two balls, one strike. Three game. First and third, bottom 11. The pitch, swing, and a miss. Springer whiffs over 99. Middle of the zone. It’s two and two. See John hunting a strikeout. Then the Angels can dream about a double play ball. Choo choo low ball three 100 from the hardth throwing right-hander Zephr John.
Some good arms in this bullpen. This Angels bullpen. Big stuff. And the Angels, to their credit, have not allowed a Blue Jays run since Springer’s two-run shot in the third. We’re in the 11th now. And the 3-2 line and caught leaping grab at second. Kevin Newman to save the game. One down. My goodness. Me, you, and 37,000 others were ready for this game to be done. And Kevin Newman said no. George Springer was all over that baseball. The approach was perfect. He was trying to go the other way. How about Newman just getting to that baseball for the first out.
And now an interesting call. Ray Montgomery had to make a call here. Do you pitch to Vlad or Bo with a couple more forces? They’ll go with Bo intentionally walking Vlad to load the bases. Barry Enright is coming out to the hill to talk to the right-hander Zephr John.
I actually I don’t mind this move, but as as a coaching staff, as a manager, you have to ask yourself, can this guy throw strikes in this situation? Yeah, Zephr John with nowhere to put a base runner now because the bases are loaded and he has walked 21 in 33 and a third innings coming into this game. That is not good command.
Yeah, and that tells me that this is a risky decision. Is it the smart decision? Maybe. You get a forced play at every bag now. You come home and then throw to first for a double play, but like we’ve talked about over and over this season, that puts a lot of pressure on that pitcher to throw strikes. Also, you might walk the guy with better overall numbers than Vlad, but you face the guy with better runners and scoring position numbers and RBI numbers in Bo Bashette who can be very dangerous when all you need is a single. Infield in, base is loaded, one out. 3-3 game. Bottom of the 11. And the pitch to Bashette. Bounce and it gets underneath the catcher, but he finds it. Ball one. He got enough of it, but he didn’t realize that it was underneath him. He turned and started to run back to the back stop and Miles Straw lunged to the plate, but decided to hold up at third.
Well, Zephr John has a very sharp slider and he hasn’t really thrown it for strikes yet. So, if you’re Miles Straw over there at third base, you have to be ready for a wild pitch.
One out and the one pitch. Swing and a miss. Went right back to the slider. Got Bashett out in front. That’s the best one he’s thrown in this outing so far. Big pitch for him. Zephr John bounces the rosin off the top and then underside of his right hand. Steps back onto the rubber. Base is loaded. One out. Bottom 11. The 1-1 off the end of the bat. Foul went right back to the slider for a third straight time. And Bette was well out in front. It’s one and two. Braden Fischer through two scoreless innings of relief limiting the automatic runner from scoring. Zephr John is looking to match him after the righty did so in the 10th. He’s got the bases loaded in the 11th. But one two swinging a miss. Strike three. Bette expands off the plate outside on a sweeper and there are two down.
Well, we talked about the the walk rate of Zephr John. It’s a relatively high walk rate. 21 walks in 30 just over 33 innings. But the strikeout rate is high, too. So, you’re taking your chances with the bases loaded. Less than two outs in this inning. It’s looking like a good move so far. Addison Barger the last chance. Miles Straw on third. The pitch swinging a miss. Strike one. 99 down the middle. Straw’s got a lot of space on third. Reno is playing way off the line and deep. And Straw’s taking a big lead. Lunging, dancing around, trying to get in the ey line of the right-hander. The 01 line and through the first baseman shot into right field. Blue Jays win. Blue Jays walk it off again. 43 in the 11th thanks to Addison Barger. My goodness, this team just keeps doing it. They keep finding ways to win ball games. They pieced it together today out of that bullpen. And then Addison Barger comes through with a huge bases loaded base hit against a very tough reliever. 43 the final score. The Blue Jays with a massive victory. One of the first days in a while they didn’t have instant offense early and often throughout a game. And they come up with a big 4-3 victory. Stick with us. We are not going to go to the break yet. Braden Fiser will join us following this win for the Blue Jays. What a huge win, Chris. This game looked like it might slip away about five times. Yeah. And and and the most impressive thing to me was Max Max Scherzer pitched well in this ball game before he left relatively early. But how about Lazaro Estrada, you have Braden Fischer who’s going to join us. Two guys that just dominated out of that bullpen in incredibly high leverage situations. It was a tie ball game for Braden Fischer’s outing. It was a It was a a tie ball game for the majority of Lazaro Estrada’s outing and both those guys were just lights out today.
Believe we have Braden Fischer on the line with us now. Braden, it’s Ben and Chris. You got us?
Yeah, I got you.
Congratulations on the win. A huge two in outing for you. What are the emotions right now? We saw you leap when you thought Springer walked it off and then Barter comes through a little bit later.
The the the It’s just electricity in here right now. I’m just uh filled with I don’t know so much electricity. You come into the game, you’re looking to limit an automatic runner from scoring. What kind of trust do you have in yourself at this point to come through in a huge spot even though you’re a rookie?
Yeah, I mean just all all the confidence in the world right now. Um you know, I’m just going to keep doing my thing and let baseball do its thing and my defense do it do their thing and you know, the boys pulled it off like they always do on offensive side. Braden, after that a after your last pitch, you showed a ton of emotion. You walked into the dugout and you were banging guys hands and you were screaming and yelling. What has changed in you? We really didn’t see that earlier on in your in your season in your big league career. What’s changed? Yeah, that’s just completely fueled by the by the crowd right now. They’re they’re they’re they’re electric right now.
Braden, congratulations on the win and thank you so much for joining us. Yes, sir. Thank you. Braden Fischer, the winning pitcher for the Blue Jays today. Two scoreless innings in extras and the Blue Jays win the game. The final score is 4-3 in 11 innings. We’re going to take a quick

Sportset 590 the fan and the sportset radio network. Welcome back inside the Timber broadcast booth. Show Ali Chris Laru with you. We’re at the Rogers Center where the Blue Jays have just walked off the Angels 43 the final score. Jay’s talk with Nick Ashbour and myself coming up in mere moments. But Chris, before we get it to the play of the game, these days just find ways to win, don’t they? Well, it it’s pretty incredible today specifically just because of the way they pieced it together. Max Scherzer came out after four innings. Nick Sandlin threw a a scoreless inning, but you have to give so much credit to Lazaro Estrada, a guy that’s never pitched in the big leagues before. Made his big league debut today and he went four innings giving up just one earned run. He was so confident out there. He was pounding the strike zone. The biggest thing I saw from him was he didn’t walk anybody. He was just pounding that strike zone. And that’s something that you really don’t see from guys making their big league debut in such a tight ball game. It was a high leverage pitch after high leverage pitch. And he just done it did an incredible job. But Braden Fischer continues to excel as well out of that bullpen.
Yeah, you it’s funny to think that Lazaro Estrada going four innings would probably in some way have reset the bullpen. And yeah, because this game went to 11 innings, Braden Fischer was still required to throw two innings, but it is remarkable what the Blue Jays have gotten out of the back end of the bullpen. You want to add Yariel Rodriguez in there. Jimmy Garcia went on the 15-day IIL earlier today. So, you’re getting some really good contributions from guys like Lazaro, who Lazaro Estrada, who made his debut today, certainly Braden Fischer and and many others. Um, let’s get to the play of the game. And uh let’s say this, it’s probably not hard to guess when the Blue Jays walk it off in the 11th what it is. And it comes once more courtesy of Addison Barger. Straw’s got a lot of space on third. Reno is playing way off the line and deep. And Straw’s taking a big lead, lunging, dancing around, trying to get in the ey line of the right-hander. The 01 line and through the first baseman shot into right field. Blue Jays swed. Blue Jays walk it off again. 43 in the 11th thanks to Addison Barger. That’s one of two RBI of the day for Addison Barger. He had two hits. He had a walk as well. Barger’s for real. He’s for real, Chris.
Yeah, the the the approach is just different this year. I I don’t know a ton about what he’s changed mechanically, if anything at all, but it’s just the approach. He said earlier this season, I’m just swinging at better pitches. And I think it’s it’s really that simple with him. He’s swinging a better pitches. He’s taking tough pitches. We saw it in that last at bat against Zephr John, a guy that has a very sharp slider and throws 100 miles an hour. He was all over that fast ball. Hammered it to right field and the Blue Jays win their seventh straight ball game.
Before I let you go, Chris, and we get get over to to Jay’s talk real quick. Your thoughts on today’s outing for Sherzer? Max Sherzer. It felt it feels like Max Sherzer exited this ball game like 3 hours ago given how long this game went. It’s not the longest start you’ll ever see for Sherzer. Four innings, five hits, two runs, both of which were earned. Three walks, 72 pitches, 46 strikes. He probably wasn’t helped by a bit of an inconsistent zone today. But as you often say, he did give this team a chance to win, albeit in four innings of
Well, I think the most important thing is, is he healthy? And we have no idea. I’m assuming he is. because the stuff looked very good, but he was pulled a little bit earlier than I thought he would be at 72 pitches. The stuff was awesome today. It wasn’t vintage Max Scherzer, but it was pretty solid. The fast ball in the earlier stages of his outing was 94 95 miles an hour. The off speed stuff was good, and he was throwing a lot of strikes. The the the box score seems a little bit messy when you look at it, but I promise you he pitched better than the box score.
He He sure did. He did. And and I think again we’ll see what he sounds like uh after this ball game. I’m sure we’ll hear from him postgame very shortly. John Schneider I’m sure will be asked about it. But again it’s a winning edition of Blue Jays baseball today. A 43 walk-off final score for the Blue Jays who win their seventh straight game. That’s former Major League pitcher Chris Laroo. He and Ben Shman will have the call first pitch tomorrow at 1:37 p.m. Eastern, 10:37 a.m. Pacific across the network. I will have the pregame show starting at 1 Eastern, 10 Pacific. So I hope you’ll be able to join us then. For Ben Schulman, Chris Laroo, Tom Young, Derek Blackmore, Derek Grandeo, and Nick Blackmore. I’m show Ali. That does it for the broadcast today, but get your calls ready. Get your texts ready as well because Jay’s talk with Nick Ashmore and myself starts right now. Well, Nick, what a ball game. I said to you pregame that the vibes were at a season high level earlier today and I can only imagine they will find an even higher level after a 43 walk-off Blue Jays win courtesy of Addison Barger. Yet another game where the Jays find a way to win. It did take a little longer than usual. Got to 11 innings in this one. But in extras Braden Fiser absolutely electric hopping off the mound with a scream and a and a jump. Lazaro Estrada with his MLB debut. One of the better MLB debuts. You’ll see four innings of work from him. Max Scherzer getting four innings of work in another start for the Blue Jays as well. And again, like I said, Addison Barger walking off the Angels. They get the series win. It’s their second straight win against the Angels and their seventh straight win. The Blue Jays are rolling right now. When it comes to measuring vibes, I’d say it’s not an exact science, but a walk-off win just has a little bit more punch than your average one, especially when it comes to extra innings. And we were pretty close to what could have been a kind of heartbreaking loss here, too. You think about before that Addison Barger walk-off single, they were two for 16 with runners in scoring position. The Angels just kept opening the door for the Blue Jays and they could not walk through it. the bullpen was in a tough spot. That’s why we saw Estrada go four innings in his MLB debut in a close game. Like what a thing to ask from a guy in his ML debut. And this is also a pitcher who has primarily been a starter. And I know that you know starting is more difficult than relieving. But you’re still bringing him into a situation and a role that he has not done much. He doesn’t have a single relief outing at AAA or even double A. You bring him out of the bullpen, out of his routine, facing the best hitters he’s ever faced in his life, and he gives you four innings of one-run ball. I think in that way, he’s sort of the hero that game. But Addison Barger as well, two critical hits, throwing someone out from center field. I mean, not from center field, from right field. You see his unbelievable arm on display. The defense, too, I think that’s a little bit of an underrated storyline in this game. You have Barger saving a run on that instance. You have Alejandro Kirk throwing out a potential base stealer at second base. And if you kind of go back in that inning and look at it, that might have saved them a run ultimately. Ernie Clement, one of the better plays you’re going to see from a guy at second base, even though that’s not even his primary position. He played three different positions today. Miles Straw looked pretty good in center as well. We talked about before the game, just the position player group. It’s not just about hitting. It’s about offense and defense coming together for elite overall impact. And although it wasn’t the most glamorous game, that is what you saw from them today. You’re listening to JT Talk Show Ali, Nick Ashborne here with you. We’re live on the Sportsnet Radio Network. We’re also streaming on sportsnet.ca and on the Sportsnet app. You can give us a call 41687590186590 star 590 on your cell. You can text us as well. 59590 name and location. The people’s text line always open. Standard messaging and data rates may apply. We’ll get into the text line, get to the phones in a sec here, Nick. But I do I do think for me certainly the walk-off from Barger is what won the Blue Jays this game. What literally won them this game. But the bullpen holding it down for as long as it did, I got to think is where where I want to start because again, Max Scherzer, he didn’t get necessarily the length from him today. I think again after throwing what 22 pitches in the first inning that he still managed to get into the to four complete is something you will take. We’ll have to wait and hear from John Schneider and certainly from Sherzer himself postgame and and see what he said. So I’m sure they’re going to talk about the thumb as they always do. It’s going to be a a day-to-day managed thing probably for the rest of the season at this point, right? But again, you mentioned the two guys that I was incredibly impressed by today. the Blue Jays debut from Lazaro Estrada and the extra innings performance from Braden Fischer. And I’ve said this to you before about Braden Fischer that I think there’s something there. And as again, the pen is is short right now, no doubt, right? Jimmy Garcia is on the 15-day IIL with a left ankle sprain. So, I’m sure we’ll hear a little bit on that from Schneider as well as to what caused that, what what’s the issue there. But without Jimmy Garcia, guys like Estrada, and again, this is his debut, Fiser, Aladdin, Yariel, Rodriguez, performances like that from the back end of the bullpen have really helped save this team because again, with so many guys coming on and off the IIL, other guys trying to get back up to their regular game speed. It’s been a little inconsistent in the back end as of late, as great as they’ve been. So, it’s it’s phenomenal to see performances like like today from Estrada and Fischer in particular. Yeah, we’ll see where things go with Estrada. It’s possible he gets sent down again because he probably won’t be available for that long. We don’t know exactly what his role is going to be, but Fiser, you know, on the day that Garcia hits the IIL, right? Like this is a player who’s going to soak up a lot of these innings at the end of the ball game and high leverage spots. And that sounds kind of crazy for a player who’s, you know, 24 year old came into the season without any MLB experience and to be honest didn’t perform particularly well in the minor leagues last year. You know, he’s coming off a season where he had a
