MLB LIVE🔴 Arizona Diamondbacks vs Kansas City Royals – Jul 5, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
And welcome in everybody. Glad you’re with us. MLB the show has inner league action for you this afternoon. It’s the Kansas City Royals and the Arizona Diamondbacks. First pitch coming your way next. Arizona just about set to go. Getting the nod on the mound. Merryill Kelly.
Well, he’s allowing just over one base runner per inning, which is really good, especially for a starter because these hitters get to see you two, three, maybe even four times in a start. So, just shows you how deceptive and how effective his stuff is. We’ll see if it’s that way in this one.
All right, ready to go here.
So, up now for Kansas City. Jonathan India strike on the outside. And that’s how this game gets started. And the 02. That one’s upstairs. Ball one.
See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you can get hurt. Now this is in the air down the line and a foul ball off the outside edge with that one and now it’s filled up. Really good take especially with two strikes. Hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. Now here’s Bobby Whit Jr. This guy is one of the best athletes in the sport. Check swing, but he went too far. And that is strike one. Whit Jr. is one of only two players in AL NL history to have 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in each of his first two seasons. Boo. The other player Julio Rodriguez and a pop off right side foul territory calls it in. Two away. And here now the lineup for the Royals. And so far this year, this has not been a very good offense. Well, in this day and age, if you can’t slug and get on base, that OPS has to be at a certain level. If you’re going to produce runs, give your pitchers an opportunity as they’re facing tough offenses as well. Two outs, space is empty. And next up for the Royals, Vinnie Pasquantino. Swing and a miss. Strike one.
Wow, that’s 89 on the gun. And it’s a change up. It’s like good hitting if you’re looking for it, but because of the speed differential between the fast ball and that pitch, really hard for a hitter to get on time with it. That one ripped in. One hops off the wall. Should be extra bases. And he starts his afternoon off right with a double. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. A great swing on it and man, he wasn’t fooled at all. Now it’ll be the cleanup hitter for the Royals, Mikel Garcia. That’s a strike. It’s 0 and one.
Boy, you always want to come out in the first inning, try to put something up on the board. It’s a big two out double right there. See if the cleanup man can drive him in and put a tally up there on the board. Swing and a liner foul off to the right. Well, they’re looking to get on the board first here after that clutch two out double made this inning interesting. And that’s downstairs at a count. One and two.
Two strikes. Swing and a miss. And that is that. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. And now the Diamondbacks will get their first turn at bat. No score. back here at Chase Field and starting in this one, Noah Cameron. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way, somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Now here is Heraldo Peromo. And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Music] And that one pulled foul. slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. line to left. Puts it away for the out. Now the Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory Lavell.
Not a whole lot going their way offensively the last few games, Chris.
Yeah, Booan. can put more pressure on the pitching staff to try to limit the opponent to just one or two runs a game knowing that their offense is not scoring right now and that never really works well because you try to be too fine and you end up giving up a lot of runs. So, we’ll see if everybody can just relax, bring things together and perform at a level that they’re capable of. And the home first moving along quickly today. Two gone. Getting third designated hitter Smith.
Pave Smith digs in now. First offering and it just misses. Two out. Base is empty. Next offering is in for a strike.
I got a ball. One strike. Swag belted back there. And that is gone. He circles the bases. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, B. We knew it wasn’t coming back. When you’re working with this kind of velocity, so critical that you move the ball around, work quickly, and make sure that you keep that hitter off balance. Clearly not fooled by the location or the velocity. He was all over that fast. Base is empty with two away. And now it’s Josh Naylor. Started to swing, held up. hit in the air center field. Isbel under it. He makes the grab and that ends the inning. Snakes strike first with a solo shot. It’s an early one- nothing lead. Major League Baseball is on the show. All set for the start of the inning. And now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate. Perez. Kelly back to work. Pretty smart not to serve something up for him right there. He’s really good at hitting the first pitch. Swing and a foul out of play. Fights that one away. Still one and two. The pitch stays alive. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. [Music] ripped into right field. Base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that at bat. Battling with two strikes. Pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field gap. And I’m sure he’s going to be watching that one back on video because that’s the kind of swing you want to bottle. So many positives that led to that knock. Now it’s the rookie first baseman Jack Kaggle Leone. There’s the strike of the knees. Perez gets his lead at first with nobody out. Come on. The one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. Patrick Johnson behind the plate.
Patty Johnson the sunboo, but I’d ask permission first before I called them that. Does a pretty good job back there. Occasionally we’ll see a couple of sideways looks from players, but that kind of comes with the territory, right? And that one is popped in the air. Shallow center Marte right there to make the grab. One down. What about an umpire’s height? How much of a role does that play in your experience and what the strike zone is like?
Yeah, I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit, which you know, as a former hitter, you like that you wanted the ball up. You didn’t want to have to deal with stuff down in the zone consistently. And there’s a foul ball. [Music] And that one fouled off. The O2 in the air left field. Guriel trying to get there. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two down. And now the catcher comes up to him. Freddy Fine. And and that one is in the dirt. And that is ball one. Tying run is at first here in the top of the second. This one lifted in the air left field. Guriel makes the play. And that is that. Royals leave one. They’re down one- nothing. Back here in the desert. Bottom half of inning number two. Au Heno Suarez up to the plate now.
Oh, he’s been having a great year this year and hitting home runs at a good clip and the matchup is very favorable. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Nowadays with advanced metrics and increased use of moving the infielders around, defense isn’t necessarily about making errors. Are you able to get to the ball? Are you able to position fielders where hitters hit the ball, but within the new shift rules? The 1-1. That one fouled off. in an area that goes unnoticed is the coach that’s responsible for positioning and then uh the research person that’s providing the information. So what we’re seeing in baseball so many more people behind the scenes that are contributing to the success between the lines. Back when you played, it wasn’t the empirical data we have now. It was a guy with a ruler and a diamond taking a colored pencil and drawing a line where he thought someone had hit the ball. Right.
That or just going off of gut or field. What does it look like his swing is today? What’s the pitcher throwing? They are sticking to the metrics and what seems to be most consistent for that hitter regardless of who the pitcher is on the mound. And now a little barking back towards the umpire. clearly thought he got that outside corner on what was a pretty big pitch. Sometimes that only makes it worse for you moving
and that one ripped into right. That’s a fair ball and it’s getting into the corner around first heading for two and the bottom of the second starts with a double. Nice and bad right there. Not just the result but also seeing a lot of pitches made him really work out there on the mound. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch. And that’s how you do it.
Here’s Guriel. Just missed. Runner at second. Nobody out. Guriel gets a piece man at second. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners. Nobody out. All over that one right there. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. So, runners at the corners, nobody out. And stepping in is the speedy Jake McCarthy. That’s a base hit. Run scores. Picks himself up an RBI. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension and he made it out front for the line drive. Knob Alec Thomas now
he’s been tearing it up at the plate recently. Can make it a fivegame hitting streak with a knock in this one.
First pitch and he just misses.
Well, he’s just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter. Might be a good time for somebody to call a timeout. Maybe the pitching coach to go out there and talk to him just a little bit. First and second, no outs. Bottom half of inning number two. Swing and a miss. Now he’s in a one-two hole. [Music] [Applause] That one just misses.
Think he wanted that call in the open part of the zone, but just didn’t get it. Now he’s just trying to get a better feel for how much it missed, so he can adjust his sights just a little bit. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Next pitch. Not close up high. Clearly didn’t come out of his hand the right way. Left that curve ball way up. Cut on and lifted in the air. And that is foul. swing and a highf fly ball. That one out towards left center field way back there and he makes the play on the warning track. Runner tags at second and he moves up 90 ft. Runners at the corners now. One away. You know it’s a good play when we break out statcast for you folks. He took a great route and found himself in position to make a nice running catch. Just excellent work.
Yeah, he really showed off his wheels on that play. And I know that always gets you excited, Singy. Exactly 100 ft for that out. Now here is Jose Herrera. That one outside and it’s one and0. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third.
If they were an average catcher behind the plate, I’d say take second base. But this isn’t a catcher you want to run on. His quick release is unreal. And another ball. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. Next offering is in for a strike. Next offering is fouled back. Guriel at third. McCarthy at first. One gone. Two on, one out. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Music] Goes down looking. frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. The short stop takes the ball. Well,
if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch line. And that’s a base hit. In comes the run from third to add on. It’s an RBI single. It’s three zip.
Well done. Drives in the run. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. First and second, two outs. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte. He’s 0 for one. First pitch doesn’t find his zone. a swing and a miss. And that’s strike one.
He got away with one there, but he knows he can’t go into that spot very often against a guy like this. Ball to strike. The pitch
shot missed. [Music] Two on, two outs. That one misses. Three and one.
He’s great hitting the ball the other way. And that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. That clips a corner. First and second, two down. Battling here as he fouls it away. [Music] Foul ball and it remains a full count. And that’ll load the bases. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one.
Digging in, Paven Smith. He’s already homerred here in this one. Well, it stinks to be down by, you know, these runs early in this ball game like this, but you’ve got two outs. You’ve got to close the door because you still have a chance with how much time is left in this one to the right side. India throws to first in time and that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. Two runs in the inning, but they strand three. We play two full. It’s the Diamondbacks three and the Royals nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. On to the third inning. And now it’s Kyle Isbel. Pop dump. Suarez makes the grab. One away. Up next for the Royals.
So the Royals batting order turns over. Now it’s the second baseman. Jonathan India struck out swinging his first time. just missed. One, no strikes. [Music] Clips the corner and the count one and one. One out. Base is empty. Swinging a foul straight back. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Another one, two. Starting after it. Appeal to first. Nope, he held back. And that one popped in the air left field. Guriel has it sized up. He’s there. He’s got it. Two up, two down. Up next for the Royals.
Two down, base is empty. And to the plate for Kansas City, Bobby Wit Jr. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. Goodness. I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. You don’t get many like that in that location. I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound. Right through there for a strike. That one drilled left field. Guriel handles the chance. And that’s the third out. Royals go down one, two, three. They trail in this one. Three nothing. And we’re back as we go to the last of the third. Here’s Josh Naylor.
Josh Naylor. Curve ball over for a cold stride. You know, these Dbacks doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game and the numbers back that up. They’re hitting everything thrown at them. Their contact rate is in the low 90s. It’s like they know what’s coming and that’s just pretty ridiculous what they’re doing right now. Those numbers are well above the major league average. fouls it back with two strikes. Swang and a ball popped up. Kagleó and there’s one down.
That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Hey, au Suarez up to hit now.
This batter gets described as a homebody because he loves playing at home and historically his numbers back it up. And a swing and a miss.
One’s the count. Sliced down the right side. Next offering upstairs.
I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go.
Swings and sends a rocket to right. Base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single and it’s Lordis Goreel Jr. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. First pitch misses. 10. And that’s outside. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 200. He’s put himself in a really good spot. And another ball and ball for two aboard. That just came apart right there. four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone.
Jake McCarthy stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Singled and drove in a run his first time through swings and pulls a foul to the right side. This guy absolutely flies. The defense wants to turn two, but they’ve got to get a ball they can do it with. Make sure you get the first out before you try to rush and get two and end up with nothing. Fast ball for a strike and it’s 0 and two.
Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. And that’s in the dirt and it’s one and two. Swing and a miss. And he’s down on strikes now. two away and Chris that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base
and the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play but that’s how you do it keep him off balance get him out of there and deal with the next guy Thomas stands in now for the Diamondbacks this one in the air with and he makes the catch and that is the inning So, it’s no runs on a hit, no errors, and two are left. Three innings complete. It’s the Diamondbacks three, and the Royals nothing. Back here at Chase Field, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Vinnie Pasquantino. [Music] Just off the outside edge on the ground to third. Sends it to first and one gone in the fourth as they get the leadoff man. So up now for Kansas City, Mike El Garcia 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Not sure if he could be in more of a groove. Looks really relaxed. He’s retired seven straight.
This guy’s feeling it right now. That one misses. And that’s ball two. Hit weakly on the ground. Suarez zips it across. Two quick outs here in the top of the fourth. Two outs. Base is empty. Salvador Perez steps in for the Royals. One for one with a single so far. Just off the outside edge. Ball one.
Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. He was late there. Strike one.
Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. It’s strike two.
Two strikes. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That K is his third of the game. Nothing doing for the Royals. They trail it here 3 nothing. Back here in the desert ready to go. Bottom four now. The Dback’s catcher Jose Herrera. That one missed. Ball one counts one and0 and another ball. Next offering is in for a strike. And that one missing low. Fast ball for a strike. Three and two in the air left side. Waters and puts the squeeze on that one. And there’s one down.
Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Perdom batting with one down, takes a strike. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth upstairs. And now it’s even one and one in the air left field and there’s two away now. That is second base.
Here’s Catel Marte Singi. He’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Oh, just look at the back of my bubblegum card. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that can really sharpen things on the outer half, those are the ones that become elite. Next, offering misses and it’s one and one. Bullpen action for the Royals. Taylor Clark preparing to come on if needed. Laorenzan also getting ready. The 1-1 is fouled off. And that’s off the inside edge. Two balls, two strikes. The count There’s a ball. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming off if he’s walked. And here’s a 3-2 foul ball left side. He’ll see another. That’s a walk. Went with another change up and missed the spot. Boo. If I were him, I’d be nibbling around the plate as well. I mean, this guy’s just capable of hitting pitches outside of his zone and driving him a long way. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. That is the inning. One left for Arizona, but they lead it three nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Ready now for the fifth inning. And here’s the first baseman, Jack Kaggle Leone. Kelly back to work outside and that’s ball one. Well, these Royals just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game and it’s led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today. And that drops in for a strike. That’s inside. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Next offering upstairs.
Expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball. Something in the zone because he does not want to allow the leadoff walk. That one misses. So a lead off walk
that could jump start an offense that’s really struggled to score in this one. Don’t want to wake a team up with the free pass.
Drew Waters stands in fly to left his first time. And that’s through their first strike and it’s 0 and one. Waters, 26 years old, and he was a second round pick back in 2017. Love how vocal the umpire is today. No doubt in the hitter’s mind, catcher’s mind, and even the pitcher’s mind as to the conviction in the call. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Made quick work of him right there, Siggy. I know that’s the kind of at bat maybe leaves a lot of fans wondering what was he doing up there, right?
Yeah, and I get that. I mean, you take two straight strikes then chase one way out of the zone. It’s it’s just not a good at bat. It’ll leave you shaking your head as a hitter, if not worse. But there’s always going to be those trips to the plate where you’re just lost up there. And that was one of them for sure. And now Freddy Fine up and in. And that’s ball one. Kaggleó leads off first with one away. Swing and a highf fly ball right field and there’s two down. So up next, Kyle Isel. First time up was a pop out. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond, and this guy is at the top of the list. A change up missing.
One and0. Yeah, we go beyond just the, you know, fielding percentage and, you know, what it looks like, but the ability to have a range and, you know, close holes that, you know, are normally there against an average defender. But this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness and he grounds one to the right side over to first. That’s out number three. He continues to roll on the mound as five shutout innings are in the books. He hits the Diamondbacks three and the Royals nothing. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Michael Lorenzan.
And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. So here’s the cleanup hitter Josh Naylor both for two in this one the one thing about that is speed never goes in slump and defense shouldn’t either hitting wise you can struggle you can lose your mechanics but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way and this is what this guy does. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. That one ran inside. Almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. That’s off the mark. Ball three. Fast ball right back to the mound. Fires over to first and that’s the first out in the bottom of the fifth. Third base Auo Suarez.
Here’s the third baseman, Au Heno Suarez. At 96, that pitch is in for a strike. line to second. Snagged on the bounce over to first.
It’s there and that’s a great play. Now betting leftielder Lordis Gore.
Two down. Base is empty. Lordis Goreel Jr. will hit next. Right through there for a strike and that one fouled off. Next pitch misses inside. It’s a ball in two strikes. [Music] That’s ball two. Two balls, two strikes. Slider misses outside. Fights it off. He’ll see another.
Looked like he got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, I want to stay up the middle. That way, if you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. If you’re a little late, opposite field not too high and it’s ball four. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk.
They just keep handing out gifts. Boo. Were we supposed to bring something?
Singing. I think just our presence is the present. McCarthy in the box for the third time today as he takes that one off the plate. Oh, right to the back stop. And now a man into scoring position. Runner at second. Two down. Last half of inning number five. And that misses.
And that’s ball three. No strike. Outside corner. There’s a strike. [Music] That one’s in there. Three and two now. 32. Swing and a ball lifted left field and that’ll do it. One left for the Diamondbacks, but they’re on top by a count of three to nothing. All set for the top of the six. Jonathan India at the plate.
Jonathan right side hard hit. Marte throws to first in time. Leadoff man retired in the six. Up next for the Royals, short stop, Bobby Wit Jr.
Now it’s the shortstop, Bobby Wit Jr., he’s turned into one of the best shorts stops in the game. Oh, I think the key I mean, if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line.
Oh, he doesn’t get the call. One ball, one strike.
Just missing off the plate there according to the umpire and out there on the mound. Maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced, but it looks like he’s accepted it. Just missed. Two-1. The Royals trailing by three and we’re the top half of the sixth. Yeah, that’s fouled off. And ring him off, says Patrick Johnson. That’s a strike out. Chris, third time through the order and a couple of quick outs for the starter.
Yeah, he’s been very frugal today. Economical with the pitch count.
Vinnie Pasquantino the next to hit. One for two. And first offering is fouled off. Two down. Nobody on. That one finds the zone. 0 and two.
No balls. Two strikes and downstairs, gets a piece and stays alive.
That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was.
And that’s in the dirt. And they’ll do it again. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Royals set down in order. Make it six shut out innings for him out there. Now it’s the Diamondbacks three and the Royals nothing. Bottom of the six. Here’s the center fielder, Alec Thomas. Alec Thomas. And there’s the strike.
Well, these Diamondbacks really impressed me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. They really made that opposing starter work in this one. ran his pitch count up and now they’ve got an opportunity to continue making things difficult on the bullpen. Jose Herrera stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. And no, they haven’t broken through in a big way in the runs column, but with the way they’re grinding out at bats, it definitely feels like there’s potential for more coming. Lorenson throws the first. Thomas back in on a dive. Runner on the go. Pitch in for a strike. Throw a save. That’s a stolen base. And now one and two way high. No outs. runner on second. And that one is inside. Got him swinging. So the batting order turns over. Heraldo Peromo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Some hitters are just more confident they can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher. They don’t care if they fall behind 01 on the ground right side throws to first in time now that is second baseel Mart Marte up to the plate he’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup And he pumps in a strike. Rudder at third. Two away. Nope. That’s inside. And that skips in the dirt and a foul ball. He stays alive. That misses full count now. Pay Smith would be next if they can extend the inning. And he’s homered already, so I’m sure he’d love a chance to do some more damage here. Got him. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. [Music] We go to the top of the seventh now. The third baseman, Mikel Garcia. [Music] And that is out of play. Ball one there.
Movement in the bullpen. Jake Woodford up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Number 43 also throwing. [Music] Pitch misses and the count two and one. Definitely a frustrating day for the offense, but when they look at it, this guy’s had his best stuff. and painting the corners, working on the edges, and changing speeds. Just a difficult one. You tip your cap.
Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball three. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count.
In there at the knees, and now it’s three and two. BS another and that’s three straight strikeouts. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Salvador Perez steps in for the Royals. That’s a little bit low.
Counts one and0. The Dbacks leading by three here in the top half of inning number seven. In there at the knees.
One and one. Next offering is down low. Swag. Get a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. One down. Base is empty in the air to left down the line and that will drop foul up and in. Full countdown.
Still just the second batter of the inning and on the mound he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there. Outside and that is ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat.
Pitch count’s getting up there now. And not saying that’s the reason for this walk, but this is the point in the game when every sign of wavering starts to get everyone’s attention. Kagleon in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Perez at first, one gone. Let’s go down the inside corner for a strike. keeps the bat going with a foul ball. 99 pitches about to throw his 100th here in the seventh inning. This is where you really start looking for any signs of fatigue. The next pitch misses. Two balls, two strikes. Leon tries to check his swing. Now a look to third. No swing. Gary Simmons with the call. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Three and two. The pitch is outside and ball four. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate.
Well, he’s starting to look a little gassed to me. And we’ll see if they go to the bullpen in this spot or not.
Tory Lavell is out of the dugout and he’s going to make a move here. Merryill Kelly gives way. Great effort out of him as he exits in line for the win. We’ll tell you about the new pitcher when we get back. Here’s a new pitcher from the pen, number 43.
This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. First and second, one out. Now it’s the switch hitting outfielder Drew Waters. All right, back. Just missed.
Way to lay off that pitch down.
One, no strike. [Music] Oh, that’s up there. And a foul ball. Makes the count. Two and one. Tying run at the plate. And it’s even up. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. base hit into the outfield and they hold the runner at third, but the bases are loaded now with one out. We don’t see this a whole lot anymore where hitters with two strikes are willing to shorten up, tighten up, and try to hit the ball back up the middle other way. He was trying to hit that hole, I believe. Very good at bat with two strikes. Here’s the catcher, Freddy Fine. Fouled off down the right side. One out. Base is full. Rolled to short. Possible two ball. Here’s Mare for one. Double play. What a quick killing day to end the inning. Just trying to sneak one through with the bases loaded, but an excellent job by the defense to turn that one and get out of this jam. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Taylor Clark. pretty tight game. So, they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. And now, Paveman Smith.
He’s already homerred in this game. [Music] And delivers outside. swing and a pop off in foul ground. Garcia pulls it in and there’s one away. Now, the first base, Josh Naylor. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Josh Naylor. 0 for three in this one. upstairs. Activity in the bullpen. Lucas up and throwing. Base is empty. One away near the bottom of the seventh. And another ball. Misses with the 200 and he’s fired three straight outside the strike zone and it’s fouled away. And there’s ball four. Oh, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first.
And at first, AU Heno Suarez stands in now for the Diamondbacks. That one catches the zone. That’s strike one. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike, with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground and you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play.
That one well upstairs. One and one. The one-1 is fouled off. Swing and a miss. Struck him out of a slider and there’s two gone.
Nice. Doubled up with the slider for that punch out. The one before just caught the zone. So as a hitter, you have to protect right there. Great pitch to just expand a little bit more. He got that chase he was looking for. And that right there is good pitching. Guriel stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Just missed. Naylor leads off first with two down to the inning. Pull three. Climb the ladder with that fast ball. And now three balls and a strike. swing and that ball smashed on a line. He’s got it and that will end the inning. One left for Arizona, but they lead it three nothing. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Jake Woodford and he has some nasty breaking stuff. Kyle Isbel getting ready to hit.
The Royals in striking distance but have some work to do.
Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. Need a good at bat out of him right here.
Swing and a miss. And he was fooled.
Pitching has been pretty dominant in this one, but you got to be careful. Not working with too big a lead. They could get right back in this ball game if you’re not careful. Swung on. Broken back grounder to third. whips it to first on the run. Not in time to get him and the tapper turns into an infield single.
It doesn’t really matter where you are in the lineup. Your job is to get on base and try to start a rally if you’re leading off an inning. So, an infield single does the job right there. Now, we’ll see if they can make something happen. Back to the top of the order. Jonathan India steps in for the Royals. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strikeout.
Misses off the play and it’s one and0.
Well, the leadoff man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully, the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. That one foul hard the other way. Fly ball center field. Thomas makes a nice run of catch.
Well, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football.
Bobby Wit Jr. steps in for the Royals. Right through there for a strike. Woodford in his fourth year. He features a sinker, a slur, a curve, a four seamer, and occasionally uses a cutter. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. And next up for the Royals, Vinnie Pasquentino, one for three. splits the plate. Strike one.
Well, this looks like it’s going to be a wasted opportunity. Frustrating when you get the leadoff man on, but you can’t get him into scoring position. They’re going to need a big knock. Try to put something up on the board.
Next pitch is outside. The Royals trailing by three. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Highf fly ball out towards left field. Guriel drop step going back way back there and gone and they throw a pair on the board. It’s 3-2. They needed that one, Singy.
Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game and just like that, they’re back in it. Well, he did a really nice job of letting that ball travel. Wasn’t too quick. He kept his shoulder square to home plate which allows you to drive the ball to the opposite field with power. You see the power and the authority and fortunately he was lucky enough to keep it fair. Now a chance for Mikel Garcia. Oh, look at the stop from his knees. The throw got him. A beautiful play to end the inning. This guy’s anticipation is off the charts. Don’t see many short stops better than that. Great job to complete the play and end the inning. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Anel Serpa.
He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the ball.
Jake McCarthy stands in now for the Diamondbacks. left hardly first pitch doesn’t find the zone. Activity in the Kansas City bullpen. John Shriber getting loose out there. And a foul ball. Breaking ball inside. Now two balls in a strike to the right side. India whips it to first and that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth. Alec Thomas. Alec Thomas stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And that one is in for a strike at 95. One swings through that one for strike two. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt.
Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. That left-handed batter facing a left-handed pitcher that’s got some sink like that at the end. It’s just the bottom falls out of it. But it looks like it’s going to be a pretty good pitch in that location that everyone says lefties love. Perr the next to hit takes ball one. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So that’s a good take by him. misses off the inside and now two and 0. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. That one fouled off. Two and two. Next offering misses down and away and down on strikes he goes. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing for Arizona, but they still lead it 3-2. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Shelby Miller.
He’s doing the ball very well overall this season. He’s been really tough to get to. You see that erra and that’s where you love to be. Well, one-run game. Salvador Perez now at the plate. Right down to shoot and that’s strike one.
There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in a count. Looking to get the tying run on base and that one is lifted in the air. Thomas sizing it up. And there’s one away. He’s two outs away. Kaggle Leone will hit next. He’s 0 for one. Gets the outside corner with that one. That was just eight on the first pitch fast ball. Swing and a miss as he was late that time.
Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. Swing and he breaks his back. Makes the grab. Two down. Last chance for the Royals. Drew Waters steps in for the Royals. late with the swing there
in the on deck circle. You really want to use that opportunity to see some pitches and time up the fast. Last thing you want to do is miss a good hitable fast early in the count.
That misses the zone.
And that is ball one. That’s inside. Had a breaking ball. misses outside.
Big pitch coming right here. Last thing he wants to do is put the tying run on base, but he can’t groove one either. Basketball for a strike. Miller is just one strike away. Marte throw to first ball game and the Diamondbacks hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Well, a real balanced ball game. Three to2 score. We saw some hitting at times. We saw some good pitching at other times and I think very balanced uh very pleasurable game I think for the fans as well as for us up here in the booth. Watching the execution by both teams was really impressive. They did it in all facets of the game.
