After 13 NHL seasons and two Stanley Cups, Tyler Johnson is hanging up his skates.
The former Boston Bruins forward announced his retirement on Monday with a lengthy, heartfelt Instagram post that specifically shouted out the Bruins.
“Joining another Original Six team, the Boston Bruins, was equally remarkable,” Johnson wrote. “Early in my career, I dreaded facing them, but being part of their storied organization revealed their greatness. Even in my short time there, I felt the fans’ passion, the staff’s professionalism, and the players’ camaraderie.”
The Bruins signed Johnson to a professional tryout agreement in August 2024. He was patient as he waited for his time to make his debut came two months later.
“I wanted to be part of a team that had expectations to try to win. That was the biggest thing for me,” Johnson said in November of why he waited out the PTO. “The Boston organization is just top-notch in class. The very first day I was in here you could kind of see the professionalism from top to bottom. It really felt good. I just felt at home. I knew I wanted to be here.”
Johnson’s time with the Bruins was short-lived, though, and was placed on unconditional waivers after just nine games. The Bruins were his last stop before retirement.
The 34-year-old spent his first nine seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning and won two Stanley Cups. Johnson also spent three years with the Chicago Blackhawks before landing with the Bruins.
In 747 career games, Johnson scored 193 and 240 assists.
