Nationals vs. Cardinals Game Highlights (7/8/25) | MLB Highlights
and finally going to get this one started after a delay that by the time we get started it’s going to be roughly two hours and 15 minutes or so. But good news, we’re going to have baseball. The ground crew is doing their work. They’ve pulled the tarp. We finally have baseball in the opening game of this three-game series between the Nationals of the Cardinals and the managerial debut for interim manager Miguel Cairo taking over for Davy Martinez as the Nationals made the moves to let go of Davy Martinez and Mike Rizzo. So, it’s a turn of the page. Sunny Gray, Brad, can’t say enough about how great he’s been over his last five outings in rotation for the Cardinals. He’s been really good. We showed you the numbers earlier. He’s been fantastic at home as well. 10 starts here at Bush Stadium this season with a 2.76 erra. James Wood is coming up. Wood is nine out of his last 24. I’m sure he’s excited to be going to Atlanta come Sunday. And an allstar is Mr. Wood who takes strike three. Sunny Gray dots the outside corner. Can’t hand it to the catcher any better than he threw it. Two outs. Perfectly located. Four seam fast location has been solid early on here. I mean that’s just dotted away. Two up, two down for Luis Garcia. He’s hit seven homers. Check swing. Did he go? He did. And Sunny Gray backto-back strikeouts. Garcia is out swinging. Three up three down go the Nets. The Cardinals are coming up at Bush Stadium in St. Louis. Well, for Jake Irvin, 19th start of the season, 7-3 with a 4-7 on the year, 248 opponents average. And we could talk about it, 20 homers. Mason win an RBI away from 100, a homer away from 25. That’s what he needed. The turn Garcia 643 and the Nets their 64th of the year. Well, it’s going to start off with a Jake Irvin pitch on this, but CJ Abrams, the way that he attacks this ball creates all the momentum. Know that the speed of the runner huge right there. Watch CJ. He’s already in near the infield grasp. Great turn. And a great throw by Luis Garcia Jr. Alec Berles for his last five. 11 home runs, 38 RBI’s. And he got him to reach out and pull it right to the second baseman Garcia. One of two Luis Garcia. And that’s it for the Cardinals in the first. After one, no score. Here’s Josh Bell’s second go round with the Nationals. He was one for seven against the Cardinals up in DC. Back to the mound. Sunny’s got that. That one was almost by him, but he made a nice spin at top the hill. And Bell’s retired on a comebacker. Just hot shot back up the middle. Nice and easy. PFP. Hey Sunny, let somebody else play. Oh, he’s got it. Three comebackers, two strikeouts, and Brady House is next. Looks like the first knock if it stays fair and it does. There’s your answer right there, Bob. Yep. And that’s a strong throw, but it’s offline. Lars Nar who has an assist out there. And Brady House, it’s going to get him up around 250 now. Little three hit game the other day against Boston. Seeker ran in on the hand. Stay inside of it. And then here’s the checkup. Yep, it’s wet out there. One thing we’ve learned about Brady too from being out here, I know he can run a little bit. And here’s Dalon Lyle. Oh, jammed him in a ground ball to the second baseman. It’s a JC with a quick throw, retiring Lyle. House is left at second. The Cardinals come up in the second. No score. Third inning. Sunny Gray. Strike after strike. Starts with Riley Adams and S cut. Strike three. Third strike after Sunny Gray. Well, this is a situation right here. Two strikes. You’re up there. If you’re Adams, you’re thinking, “All right, he’s got that sweeper. That thing’s nasty.” No. Painted a sinker away and caught him looking. Jacob Young at 238. This guy made quite the impression last year with his speed, his defensive prowess in center. And that pitch is low for a ball. So, Jacob Young, a guy who runs well, is aboard with one out. And now Abrams, he hit a height chopper that Sunonny Gray ran down first time up. Nice. Oh, that’s well placed. Jacob Young reading it. And right in front of the left fielder, he’s heading for third. In there with plenty of time and Nolan Gorman had to scramble for a throw that sent him back across the runner. Great at bat by CJ Abrams. Great bat by CJ. Great base running by Jacob Young. Look, this has got to be the identity for a lot of players on the team. Let’s make sure we’re running all the way. Great job by Jacob Young. Get out there, Brennan Donovan. Okay, arm out there. Not a big deal, but his wheels way better than that arm. James Wood that’s looking for him to seal the deal quickly here. Up the middle. That’s well placed. And another base hit. Scoring is Young. Abrams to third and using some holes on this infield to move the line in the top of the third. Well, another great job by James on this one. And just the attack, right? You got CJ going first to third. Haven’t seen a lot of guys shift over that far as far as the second base second baseman asy way over there and they stay the same here for Garcia. Here’s the chopper and James Wood able to keep things alive between first and second. Abrams scores easily and a productive out for Garcia. His 43rd RBI. Two nothing Washington. Oh, we’ve talked about this over and over in the Red Sox series how good he is in this situation. First and third or just runner at third, fewer than two now. 21 of 26 on the year. 21 of 26. Victor Scott the second center fielder number nine hitter leads off the bottom of the third. Oh, one pitch. Swing. Fly ball cracked toward right center. That ball is going to get down and bounce in the bullpen. That’s a tough break that hits the top of the fence. Victor’s got three and maybe more. He was flying out of the box and he’s got the first Cardinals hit. A double. Yeah, this thing does anything other than what it does currently. He’s standing on third. Change up that stays up in the zone. Hands back for Victor Scott in the second. So, top of the order, Brendan Donovan. He’ll try to move the runner at least. Donovan drives one deep right field. That’s an Allstar homer. Well, as we’ve seen Chip all season long, the Nationals punch and the Cardinals punch a right back. Victor Scott the second with the double. Then first pitch fast ball up and in. The 391 ft shot to right field. The eighth of the season for Brendan Donovan. And Mason Cardinal shortstop hit to a double play his first time up in the air to shallow right and Lyall can’t get that. That drops in softly for a Mason win single. Three straight Cardinal hits getting good looks this second time through the order. Double homer single. Let’s see what Burley does here with nobody out. That one shot under the glove at first. Mason around second on his way to third. Pop’s going to wave him home. Berles’s got a double and the Cardinals have the lead. But this is another change up here from Jake Irvin. That is hit hard. It’s down. It’s away, but it was recognized out of the hand. The hot shot just under the glove there of low at first. Mason Win, you know, he’s got the speed. He’s running hard. No doubt about it. Able to score easily. Cardinals three, Nationals two. Sunny Gay has been very efficient. had three comebackers among the first five outs of this game and he just struck out Jacob Young. So there’s that sweeper. It was a beauty and Sunny has struck out his fifth man. It’s kind of been a pitch in this one that Sunny has kept in his pocket a little bit more but breaks it out here now coming around to the third time around the order. Sunny, they’re saying this is the best that he has felt before the All-Star break. He’s gotten a lot of work in, but they’ve done a good job of keeping him fresh and he looks fresh tonight. Six strikeouts for Gray. Halfway through the game, the Cardinals lead the Nationals 3-2. Jaffin is ready. And here is Lars Nukebar. Swing high. Fly ball right. Lyall going back to the wall. Leaping try. He can’t get it. Lars Nbar with a solo home run. Extends the lead. Jake Irvick tried to go with that change up again. It’s a pitch that was hit hard by Victor Scott. A pitch hard that was hit hard by Alec Berles. And now a pitch that is driven out of the ballpark by Lars Newar. His 12th of the season club leading 12th of the season shot. Mason win next. And this ball lifted the left. Jameswood. No problem. You don’t have to leak when you’re 67 to pull one back. Outstanding play by James Wood who just took a home run away from Mason Win for Helley. 3 and0 a 3.3 erra. He’s on for the 31st time. 17 saves and 22 save opportunity. One out away from sealing up this victory and save number 18. Chopper tore short. The flip to second. Close spot in time and that’s your ball game. Cardinals win it 42. Couple of homers, Sunny Gray, an excellent start, Brad, and as you just pointed out, terrific bullpen work. Yeah, great job by the bullpen. I think it was managed really well. The matchups were perfect and the guys got it done. Donnie with that big two-run shot. N added one as well, and Berles with an RBI. This is a great way to start the home stand, top to bottom. Get a chance to do another one tomorrow.

Brilliant Sonny Gray!!! Go Cards!!!
RALLY RAIN DELAY !!!!!!! Friends, UNDISPUTED Manager of the Year Oliver Jose Marmol and his St. Louis Cardinals (the GREATEST team in the league) claim victory yet again. The squad is going 119-43, TAKING the NL Central, MAKING the postseason once again and in three/four months (depending on when the games are in October/November), HUDDLING around a World Series trophy for an unprecedented TWELFTH time!
The bottom of the third inning gave me GOOSEBUMPS from head to toe. First, Brendan Michael Donovan, the 28-year-old from Würzburg, Germany, gets the offense rolling by DEMOLISHING A BOMB to right field, driving in Victor Dwanyne Scott II! Then, Alec Michael Burleson, the 26-year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina, RIPS an RBI double to right field, bringing in Masyn Blaze Winn.
MAMA MIA !! A FILTHY #SCTOP10 double play in the top of the fourth inning as third baseman Nolan Brian Gorman FIRED to second baseman Thomas Darren Saggese who then HURLED to a teammate at first base. That SHOWS the STL is not only the best offensively, but defensively, too!
Lars Taylor-Tatsuji Nootbaar, call him STATE FARM 'cause he provides the INSURANCE … In the bottom of the sixth inning, the 27-year-old from El Segundo, California, LAUNCHES A NUKE to right field. Someone go check the Missouri-Illinois state line for that one!
Folks, if you're looking for a CLEAR-CUT Cy Young Award winner, Sonny Douglas Gray is the choice. In FIVE innings, the 35-year-old from Smyrna, Tennessee, gets SERIOUS with SIX strikeouts! HATS OFF to Steven Jakob Matz, Phillip Louis Maton, Joseph Abel "Jojo" Romero and Ryan Dalton Helsley, all part of the best bullpen in the league, for the LOCKDOWN defense.
TIME TO FLY !!!!!!!!!!!!! #12in25 #STLFLY
Heya peeps! If you wanna see my hubby 😍 Mitt's comments just go under the "newest" tab.
Mwah! 🥰
8:57 say that again?
If only they could do this against good teams.
They were winning all kinds of games when Donny was in 3 hole. Need to flip him and Winn. Donavan is an RBI machine! Puts him at lead off? 🤷
Not going to pretend this streaky Cards team hasn't been aggravating, with our highs being very high and lows being very low… that said, this is one of those teams that can be very dangerous if they find themselves playing October baseball…
Look how empty the stadium is and you wonder why look at the line up noot in right field and Donnie in left WTF is oli doing Donnie needs to be at 2nd noot in left sejacie in the minors and Gorman as DH and Burleson in right
Please for the love of god trade Helsley
Where was the offense when we played the Cubs? The dog walked us
We het rid of marmol snd eatch the team get going need new energy in the club house like when bader was playing with the team we have that on this team with vic winn noot gorman catrtas
Well its type a team if gets hot down the stretch in aug $ept look out but we need s another ace and yhe bats to be more consistent
FEDDE, MIKOLAS AND JOHN KING ARE STILL ON THE ROSTER!!!!! WHY????????????😩😩
After last season this is pleasant
I have never went to a baseball game and im from st louis , im planning on going to my first game soon
Cardinals Doing That WINg Thing !!!
What time did this finally end i dont think they started playing till like 915pm i tried to stay awake but couldnt.
Cards getting literally swept scoring 0 in 3 games by the pirates is embarrassing, cubs walking away with these struggles with bad teams. They need to find some consistency.
5 inning sonny,give him a medal
