Cowboys Insider HINTS At Dallas Adding DT Help | Cowboys Rumors On Top Free Agent & Trade Targets
[Music] We’re looking at the defensive tackle room on today’s Cowboys report. Tom Downey here. Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star Telegram said the Cowboys likely carry five defensive tackles, but that one of them might not currently be on the roster. Here’s what Harris wrote as part of his defensive tackle depth chart series. He’s doing over at Start Telegram. Because while it’s expected that five defensive tackles will make the roster, that could factor in veterans that typically decide to sign after training camp at that defensive tackle spot. If the Cowboys carry five in my predictions, I’ve only had them carrying four because, well, simply put, I don’t like the depth. I I don’t think the depth at this defensive tackle spot is good enough. I I don’t like the way it is constructed overall. I think they are profoundly thin at that spot. Right now they’ve got seven guys on the roster. Osa Odigizua, Mazy Smith, Salman Thomas, Jaytoya, Perion Winfrey, Denzel Daxon, Tommy Aking Basote. We’ll discuss all of those guys, but I don’t think it’s a very good room overall. In fact, outside of your top three players, those last four guys since the 2023 season started have played a combined 13 snaps. You’ve got three guys that are going to make this roster. And then the fourth spot, Jay Toy is a seventh round pick. I like him, but this is a complete unknown in terms of what they actually are as NFL players. And the pads haven’t even been on at training camp, at mini camp, otaas yet. Camp hasn’t started yet. We don’t really know what they are. Like, awesome. Toya got some first team reps. Good. I like that. I I think he could be a good player. It’s think I don’t know. Especially at noseguard. By the way, at Nosegard again, this is just Mazy Smith and the Funky Bunch. Like, we’re doing, aren’t we doing the exact same thing the Cowboys did last year where it was, okay, OSA is our three technique sweep, but at noseguard, we’re going to have Mazy Smith and seventh rounders and UDFAs and oh shoot, let’s go sign somebody in in August. It’s the exact same thing we’re doing. So, yes, I want noseguard help. I don’t think you’re good enough there at all for a team that has an issue stopping the the run. I question if you are good enough. So, do you agree? Do you think the Cowboys need to add another defensive tackle? Why for yes and for no? Sound off in the comments section of today’s show. Now, as part of this piece for the Star Telegram, Nick Harris mentioned three safe defense tackles, guys who are going to be on the team. Oso Odizua, Mazy Smith, Solomon Thomas. I don’t think we need to spend much time on them because they’re going to be on the team. The bubble candidates then are Jay Toya and Perion Winfrey for Harris, which I think is pretty fair. These are two very different players. Like you could not find, I’m sure you could extreme examples, but these are very different archetypes. Toy is a nose guard. He showed some pressure flashes last year. 25 tackles, two TFLs, a sack, 19 pressures, but he’s like 340 pounds. Like as it sits right now, I would have him as my number four defensive tackle. And honestly, that’s in part because I don’t have a lot else to offer at no guard. I I don’t have guys that I think fit that mold well enough. Here are the listed weights per the Cowboys official website, which you know, sometimes they’re lying. Let’s be honest there. Tough is at 342. All right. Mazy Smith was 337, but he also point was below 300. That was a weird situation, but he’s added some weight there. Ambasote is 306. Denzel Daxon’s 304. That’s like not really noseguard. That’s that’s not fatties only, you know. Perion Winfreyy’s 290. OSA’s 280. He might have added a little bit more weight. Salman Thomas is listed at 256. I’m 99% sure he is significantly heavier right now. Like I’m talking like 20 pounds heavier. He was 273 coming out of Stanford. So I at the combine. I I think he’s going to be in the 270s, 280s, but again, he’s not a run stopper. Who on this group do you feel confident is a great runto stopper? Nobody, right? That’s not Osa’s game. Hopefully, he’s better this year, but he’s not an elite runto stopper. Haron Winfrey is not a runto stopper. He’s a three technique. That’s what he is. He’s more disruptive, which isn’t a bad thing. He’s also coming off of a UFFL campaign. and you will see if he makes the roster. If he’s your fifth, I still have big time questions about your nose guard room. Now, today’s show is made possible by Chubbies. Summer is here and it means it is officially time to let the dogs out. And by the dogs, we mean your legs. If your pup if your pups have been stuck in jeans or sweats the last few months, set them free with the original stretch shorts, the performance polo andor the classic lined swim trunks. Also two players listed as the work to-do category for Nick Harris and that includes a draft pick in in Tommy Aken Basote and then UDFA former UDFA Denzel Daxon. I I don’t think Tommy’s ready yet. There are some intriguing physical traits that you know I think you kind of want to see what he can develop. But you know he had a sack last year, a singular sack. I I think this is a draft and stash almost to borrow an an NBA term. a guy that like I think he can get down to the practice squad and probably is on the practice squad. And maybe in a year or two when Solomon Thomas potentially leaves, he could be your backup three technique. That could be a good outcome for the Cowboys, but he’s also a seventh round pick. I don’t want to lean on seventh round picks to play big snaps for me if I can avoid it. Then there’s Denzel Dax, who you can just pen put it in pen, frankly, unless he just plays out of his mind, which he wasn’t in Illinois either, uh, in this upcoming preseason, he’ll be on your practice squad. He is an international player pathway program IP. He gets a free practice squad exemption. So instead of 16, he can be your 17th. He’s going to be there. So we’ll look then at what you can do to find help. What is your confidence level right now in the Cowboys defensive tackle room? Scale it for me from 1 to 10. I’ve got six free agent targets. And again, because you’ve got OSA and Solomon Thomas, I’m a little bit more focused in on noseguard types. Rayquan Davis fits that mold. He’s got good size. He’s a very tall player which I has utilized in the past at a couple different stops as well, but he wasn’t good last year for Indie. He he got pay from the Dolphins and I was like, that’s kind of a big contract to give a guy that wasn’t that productive and then he got worse. But as we’ll get into the free agent market really doesn’t move the needle at all. Lynval Joseph is also, I think, a name to monitor when it comes to potential free agent targets for the Dallas Cowboys. He was specifically mentioned in that piece by Nick Harris. He’s been mentioned by some others in passing as like, you know, he signed with the Cowboys at training camp. He hasn’t done a training camp in like three or four years. He wasn’t that bad for the Cowboys. This to me is kind of like the floor of what you can survive with at noseguard. actually had some sacks. Those were a little bit fluky, but hey, he he got them. He can give you snaps. You might get to August and go, “We need 20 snaps from somebody else. 15 20 snaps a game from somebody else.” Lynval Joseph might be able to give that to you. The problem I run into with this idea is we literally just did that. This is the exact same thing the Cowboys did last off season and it went ah we all end the year going okay that was not good enough so we’re just going to do it again. Kind of feels like the meme of he ain’t doing nothing but stand back. That concerns me. Also brought in last season was Carlos Watkins. That was actually mid-season because they were just in bad shape because I liked the uh the trade for Jordan Phillips at the time. There was conflict there the entire time. He’s also a free agent. They’re not going down that path. Watkins is a Jag. That’s just a guy. Like, he might not be a huge liability, but he’s definitely not helping you that much either. We are 725 subs away from 218,000 here on the Cowboys report. Help us get there. Hit that sub button right now. All right. Some additional names here that exist. I’ll call it Austin Johnson who’s a little bit bigger Penn State guy. He’s bounced around the league in the NFL. Been a journeyman. Again, we’re kind of this I hate to bear of bad news. It’s July. The defensive tackle market is full of like people like not impact guys, just a guy. Austin Johnson fits that mold. Khalil Davis has been kind of a bouncearound player over the course of his NFL career out of Nebraska. You know, he’s not as big as some of the other guys, but at 61308, you kind of got that shorter, squattier frame, so it’s it’s doable. Arman Watts, I thought could have been an option last year for the Cowboys. He had ties to Mike Zimmer. Uh, but again, this is bounce around. Did have two TFLs, but seven tackles, bigger frame at 65. He’s done some one and even some five technique stuff, too, in the past. We’ll talk trade targets here next, but name a defensive tackle who you want the Cowboys to add. I know there are some big names at DT that you might think you can get, but I’m not as confident on that. I would love to find Javon Dexter his way to to Dallas or go call about Andrew Billings. I don’t think they are available. I think Zack Pickkins might be. There probably is an odd man out in Chicago. And if you get to late August, early September, maybe Pickkins could make some sense. Although again, I think he’s a little bit more in the three tech mold, but he does have some size. I know all of us want DJ Reer. I don’t think that one’s going to happen. That I think was just a PFF pipe dream. I think Brick Martin is available. He’s a fatty. He was overdrafted by the Lions and he hasn’t done anything, but this kind of falls into the noseguard flyer bucket. Jordan Elliot, you know, spends time with the Browns as well. Now with the 49ers, they kind of overhaul their defensive line room. He might be available. Shai Tuttle. The Panthers added some more defensive tackles as well. Big body on the interior. He could be an option. Um think that was the guy that cooked Zack Martin the one time and I was like, “Okay, this I know it’s over for Zack Martin.” Tyler Lacy, the Cowboys did do some draft work on. He’s coming out of Oklahoma State. He’s with the Jags right now. Kind of like the last two uh teams. They’ve overhauled their group. Look, I would love to get Grover Stewart. I would love to get to Forest Buckner. The Colts have to win games right now and they don’t have the defensive tackle depth to justify trading either of those players. You know, maybe that could change come trade deadline time. But the common thread here is you want defensive tackle help, you have to do it in March. It’s hard to find help in July and August. Everyone needs to understand this D isn’t about run stopping DT,eberflus uses LBs to stop the run..period
DT with osa Thomas toia is 10 confidence level, when you understand eberflus uses LBs to stop run..

if it’s not a DJ Reader esque pickup then it’s not really any different/better than what Dallas already has…if cowboys don’t sign or trade for a quality DT/CB before regular season comes.. I just don’t see the defense being any good nor at all better than last year.
Been saying this since Garrett left!
Tom, im here every day. Idk why people talk down on your page, you speak facts and keep it relevant, giving me content when I need it. 💯 DC4L
YYYYYYYYYYYY
We couldn't stop off tackle on outside runs
Right now I’m worried about our defense not our offense, we need to improve on defense especially defensive tackle, linebacker, and corner
For the love of God! We know we need DT and CB depth so why in the world do we not just go ahead, sign Gilmore and find an improvement at DT and get it over with? I mean we know we need it to be better! We have the $! The Jones Boys know we the fan will back the decision! Why must we HESITATE on EVERYTHING? Must have DRAMA in the BIG D!
My confidence level in the DT room -1
Yes Yes yes
No body is a run stopper
It not the DT. Is not the problem. DE can’t play the run well. This guy doesn’t have a clue on the run defense.
You have dealt with Linval Joseph need better and more physical than that. Get young at that spot and physical

We really need to add a new GM
