BREAKING: SAN JOSE SHARKS ACQUIRE RYAN REAVES FROM TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

The San Jose Sharks traded for Ryan Reeves in the year 2025. You’re Locked on Sharks, your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Hello, welcome to Locked on Sharks, the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area. My name is JD Young, caretaker at the Reef, also the co-host of Locked On NHL. I want to thank you for making Lockdown Sharks your first or maybe second listen of the day. Uh proudly part of the Lockdown Network where we cover your team every day. And uh apparently uh we’re trading for Ryan Reeves as uh we’re doing a emergency kind of 15minute episode here after the San Jose Sharks acquire uh Ryan Reeves. Yes, that’s Ryan Reeves for Henry Thun. So we’re going to uh learn about Ryan Reeves uh what he brings to the San Jose Sharks and more importantly why. because I have a lot of questions in the why category and I’m going to try to answer as many of the questions in the why category because um let’s be honest I think this is a dumb trade. So before we get to all that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time. Download the Game Time app. Create an account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase. So, um, the Sharks sent Henry Thr, uh, to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Ryan Reeves. Ryan Reeves has one year on his cap at 1.35 million. Henry Thr, of course, one year on his uh, deal with $1 million. So from the Toronto perspective, um it gives you a little bit of flexibility as you have a team that is uh you know very close to the cap uh as per usual as you would expect with a team like Toronto who is uh you know perpetually trying to be good. Then if you were to wave and try to get Henry Thrren into the miners, you can bury his full $1 million contract. With Ryan Reeves, you would have a two like basically the rule is anything over 1.15 million um you have to eat the rest of that contract on your NHL cap. So, if the Toronto Maple Leafs waved Ryan Reeves and tried to get him down to the AHL, which they did last year, you would still have a $200,000 cap hit, right? 1.35US 1.15 uh $200,000. Uh not good at math. I got that one. So, that’s the thinking for it is uh you’re I mean, let’s be realistic. Like, let’s 100 be realistic. You have a guy in Henry Thr who the Sharks, right? you you had no more room for defenseman and especially with the hope that uh Sam Dickinson is a full-time NHL player, right? So, or like you you you went out, you got three new defenseman this off seasonason. You still have Timothy Ligin, you still have Mario Ferraro. Uh you have Shakir Mukadullan who deserves to be a full-time NHL player. Um you have Luca Kenyon is going to be, you know, cracking the NHL lineup at some point. Then you have Sam Dickson, who was the 11th overall pick uh in last year’s draft, ready to to at least make an attempt to be an NHL player. So, we knew Thrun was kind of the odd man out here. Um, and Henry Thun is, I mean, at this point, a guy who’s going to probably be a tweener type of player. Um, you know, I had very high hopes for Henry Than. thought he was going to really solidify himself as a longtime potential kind of, you know, either second pairing or bottom pairing type of player and it just never really kind of worked out with him. Um, you know, so he’s a guy who’s a fringe NHL roster player. You just traded for a guy in Ryan Reeves who should not be on an NHL roster. So, let’s dig into Ryan Reeves uh here a second. So, uh, Ryan Reeves, uh, a former fifth round pick way back in 2005, doesn’t have to wear the face shield because he’s been the NHL that long. Uh, one, dumb wear the face shield. Two, uh, 6’2, 225 pounds, one year left on his contract. Like I said, he played 35 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs last year where he had zero goals, 10 assists, and 14 shots on goal. Uh, he played 748 a night where he had 43.7% Cory4. So, when he was on the ice, the Toronto Maple Leafs took 43% of the shot attempts. Uh when he was uh also on the ice, um the Toronto Maple Leafs scored 33.33% of the goals. His evolving hockey card, uh again, didn’t play a lot, so there’s not much, but he’s below fourthline minutes here, and his offense is gone. Like, there there’s no offense who speak up for him. Um over the past three years he’s a 13% projected war player uh with a spike last year around 25%. This year just hovering over 0% in the 24-25 season. Uh even strength defense is okay at half zero or 50% but uh he’s played the the easiest competition with the worst type of teammates. um does not produce anything offensively um and is a struggling checking line forward because he again uh gets no offensive zone time which you wouldn’t want to give Ryan Reeves offensive zone time and faces low quality of competition. Um, so Ryan Reeves is a player who’s out there. He is a throwback enforcer in the year of 2025. And yes, like I’m not any longtime Lockdown Sharks fan. Well, no. Like I’m not a big fighting type of guy. And yes, I know, right? You you that that’s part of the game. The unwritten rules, right? You know, you hit our guy, we’re going to hit your guy. You try to take out like I I get it. I don’t agree with it. I get it. I I my hockey I think at its best it is when it is um speed and skill and you know physic like I don’t mind guys being physical and throwing big checks but do it in the name of something right you are trying to win a battle. You are trying to separate a man from a puck. um you were like it is part of within part of the the structure of the game, right? Um and again, maybe I it’s me and my millennial uh view of of of sports of, you know, I want to see skilled players do skilled things and do cool stuff, right? Uh defenses for nerds go to score points. Um Ryan Reeves is the complete opposite of that. He is a dinosaur out there in a game that is continually evolving and getting faster and getting more skilled. And he brings none of that. He brings a menacing presence as he sits on the bench for uh 53 minutes of the game and plays for less than eight. So why did the Sharks make this trade? We’ll get to that here in just one second. Maybe you want to go catch a Giants game as the this weekend, right? You have the Giants, Dodgers, uh or whatever team you want to go because it’s the summertime and you should be out watching sports. Uh you realize I need to want to go to a game today. All right, before we try to figure out why the sharks did this, um do of course want to thank you for making the lockdown sharks your first listen. Even though it is uh knee deep into summer, we still got you covered uh with great content coming as we’re going to start to kind of gear up uh for the new season. Uh of course, we’re going to get to deep dives on the top prospects from the 2020 draft. Um got some fun interviews we’re working on getting lined up. Uh, plenty of great stuff. So, make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcasts. And of course, you can watch on YouTube as well. Okay. Um, why why why um and I like maybe my career, you know, you you the first thing you hear, right? Great in the locker room, presents for the young kids, etc., etc. Um, cool man. You’re not telling me what the dude does on the ice, right? Um, because the numbers tell me he does very little on the ice. And if you’re saying he’s a guy who sticks up for his teammates, okay. Um, he got into one fight last year, one fight. He had 28 penalty minutes, one fighting major. 15 minutes of his 28 penalty minutes were because he ran Darnell Nurse and got a fiveminute major and then got kicked out of that game. Um, and then he had some penalties. So he’s a player when he’s on the ice has a negative effect because if you’re saying he’s there to protect the the the young players again there’s he spends 87% of the t the game sitting on the bench opening the door for his teammates and I don’t know I mean I think I would like a forward who can contribute in other ways. So I don’t have to play 11 forward. I don’t have to play a man down basically the entire game with Ryan Reeves in the lineup. The hope is the hope is you just found your new Scott Savin, right? Uh a guy who you’re going to wave get him down in the AHL and the AHL which is a much more kind of rough and tumble league, right? There’s more fights in the AHL. there’s more kind of I don’t want to say goonery but there it’s a little bit rough or tougher league right uh I mean you William Ecklan got into a fight in the AHL for for you know um and maybe just having like if he’s your new Scott Sabin and he’s down there and he’s playing games down there and he’s on your fourth line in this there and he fights a dude every once in a while and then maybe plays a couple NHL games okay like fine and you basically traded Henry Thr for a borderline NHL AHL player for a fourth line AHL player. Not great. Not great in the scheme of things. Worst case scenario is he’s playing every freaking night and then you are again handicapping yourself because he provides little he provides a negative impact on the ice. And again, if you’re saying he’s out there to protect the kids, he’s not on the ice. He spends 87% of the game sitting on the bench. If him and Melbourne, the only time those two guys are on the ice together is if Macon Celbrini is coming on after Ryan Reeves has just left them in the defensive zone and Celabbrini has to come out on the ice to try to get the Sharks offense going again. Like and if a player gets hurt, Ryan Reeves isn’t going to go out and protect a player. Like people I saw people bring up, well, Shakir Mukadullan. Ryan Reeves wouldn’t be on the ice with Shakir Mukmadulan was out there. All right, that’s not going to stop a player from getting hurt. Oh, they’re going to think twice. No, they’re not. No, they’re not. I gotta think Ryan Reeds is sitting over there on the bench. He’s chirping me. Oh man, I might see him in, you know, 20 minutes from now when he gets back on the ice. This is this is a like like if you want a guy who again like Jonah Gatovich, Jonah Gatovich is a guy who will stick up for his teammates, but he also does other things. I loved watching Jon Gatovich play because like he’s a guy who grew on me because of again not only did he stick up for his teammates, right? But he also did other things. He checked hard, he played hard, he had a little bit of scoring pop, like you know, he did other things. Ryan Reeves doesn’t do any of that. Thankfully, this is only a one-year deal. And the hope is you can trade him to somebody else who thinks that they need to add some sort of um grit or toughness or whatever you need uh at in the playoffs. But I hate this trade. And again, I wasn’t expecting anything anything for Henry Thun. Like if you got a six round pick for Henry Ther had a six or seventh round pick from Henry Thrron than this because you are wasting a roster spot that could go to somebody else and right okay if he’s great in the locker room then why did you go out why’ you claim Barkley Goodro right um who’s supposedly great in the locker room um comes from a winning champ you know a winning like organization in the Rangers sticks up for his teammates at least like Barkley Goodro The dude tries hard, right? I will give him that. The the like Goodro tries hard. He does, you know, not my favorite player, but at least I could point to some stuff that he tries to do. I hate I hate this trade for the Sh I hate this trade for the Sharks because I again I think you are just wasting a roster spot with Ryan Reeds and you are putting everybody else on the roster in a terrible like they’re now having to do more because they got that one guy at work who can’t pull his weight and that’s what I think happened. So, um, yeah, one like you you basically traded a we got a log jam at defense to now we have a stump in the forward group. So, it’s not great, man. Not great. So, we’ll be back next week unless uh Greer does something else this weekend. So, uh make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcasts. Of course, you can watch on YouTube as well. We already have an episode out, too. Uh I talked about Asis’s Calder uh chances. So uh go check that out. We dig into the numbers. We look at how uh other Calder finalist goalie caller finalist uh performed and try to see if we can at least put a pathway for Asky to be in it. So go check that out. It’s already out wherever you’re listening to this or you can watch on YouTube as well. Um follow the show on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram at lockdown sharks. Follow me on Twitter and Blue Skyfry Hole. Uh, at least now Ryan Reeves can sit menacingly on the bench. Bye, friends.

The San Jose Sharks shake up their roster, trading Henry Thrun for Ryan Reaves. This unexpected move sparks debate among fans and analysts alike. JD Young, host of the popular hockey podcast, examines the trade details and implications. He analyzes Reaves’ stats, playing style, and potential impact on the Sharks’ lineup. Young questions the logic behind acquiring a “throwback enforcer” in today’s fast-paced NHL.

The discussion shifts to speculation about Reaves’ role with the Sharks. Will he be used primarily in the AHL or see significant NHL ice time? Young explores how this trade might affect young players like William Eklund and Macklin Celebrini. The episode also touches on the broader implications for the Sharks’ rebuilding strategy. Is this move a step forward or backward for a team in transition?

Tune in for an in-depth analysis of this surprising trade and its potential ripple effects throughout the San Jose Sharks organization.

  1. It’s obvious, you just don’t like the player and that’s ok! Your entire take on this is wrong. Thank god you’re not GMMG

  2. Trading a third round pick for Henry Thrun was a really good move at the time, but now we basically lost that third for Ryan Reaves which isn't great.

  3. You know what, I'm glad you have an opinion on this!! I do wish the return was something more. Like a 5th rd pick. Toronto got rid of a liability, saved a bit of cap and got a player who might contribute something, especially if injuries happen. That seems worth a 5th. or 4th. Honestly, its a nothing trade. But I appreciate the energy. Watched the Reaves interview from a few days back and he basically said he was falling apart from an NHL stand point

  4. Calling this trade dumb not understanding we still have another shit year coming up and no one to protect our young core is a crazy take. We will be lucky to be a .500 club so why not get tougher when the pacific always beats up on us and not having any real enforcer on the team? everyone wants to run 12 scoring forwards lol

  5. I like this move. He is there to protect the youth. This might mean Misa and Dickinson will be on the roster. Fighting and toughness is important to set the tone and shift the momentum. The youngsters getting bullied by vets on opposing teams is one less thing they need to worry about. They can focus on their game and let Reaves handle it.

  6. I genuinely think he’s gonna get essentially 0 NHL games, and this was simply to get a DMan off the roster. Idk if it’s better than Thrun getting picked up on waivers, probably cause at least you get someone back. I like the move

  7. I’ll answer the why with one example of how Mukhamadullin took that cheap shot from Vatrano at the end of the year last season and messed up his shoulder and no one did s***. This team needs an enforcer to protect the kids or other teams will 100% take liberties with them. Glad Grier got him.

  8. I utterly loathed Reaves when he was in Vegas, so I totally understand JD's disdain for this move. On the other hand, I will be excited to see some toughness and grit come back to San Jose. It has been a long time since we have had a player that can protect his teammates and instill fear on the ice. Guys like Shelley, Parker and Haley were necessary and effective. Not saying Reaves is that guy anymore but I understand the move.

  9. Dude wtf?! This is so weird given our past relations. Granted everything is different now, but its still bizarre.

Also bummed no more thrun but he would have taken way more work and probably only amounts to a 4th pairing player.

I dont mind it given its more protection for our young players. It would be wild if they got him a stanley down the line.

  10. Misa looks like he’s going to make the team with this move. The Sharks are going to have an 18, 19, and 20 year old as a tandem of top-6 centers. Reaves can do his job as a deterrent with 8 minutes of ice time twice a week. I wish this wasn’t necessary but Celebrini and Smith got a little lucky with their treatment last year. More kids means more need to police.

  11. He got traded to The Sharks because him & Paciorety brokered the Marner deal to Vegas. Leaf fans are upset cause Reaves sold Vegas to Marner and this was his punishment.

  12. Can’t only look at stats or skill. Love or hate him you have to respect the guy as a pro. He has been playing pro hockey since 2007, nearing 1000 NHL games played, not a single team has said they didn’t like him on the roster, and as a bottom tier skilled player he has to be doing something right to be around that long. The young guys will take notice of that. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, character signings/trades can be far more important and a greater asset than just goals and assists. This is why I can’t stand people that always stare at analytics.

  13. Leafs fan here. Leafs fans thought reeves had fight left in him. He simply doesn't. Leafs paid him to fight and he simply chose not to. Leafs won the trade.

  14. Good points made, JD. It seems just the idea of having Reaves sends a message to the team that they must get tougher. There is also low odds Reaves makes the team. He certainly won’t be more than a last guy on the roster. Just having him in training camp could be valuable. It’s not like Thrun is some star in the making. Plus, everyone complains about too many LD. This move removes one in Thrun, and basically replaces him with RD Pohlkamp in the D development pecking order. Orlov, Klingburg, Leddy, Ferraro, Liljegren, Makhmadullin, Dickinson, Cagnoni and Pohlkamp are the names that matter. So you move out a guy who is going to be overtaken, move a LD to make room for a RD, bring in a guy who can toughen up the youngsters in training camp, and just keep around as a last guy on roster on a non-contending team, if he even makes the roster. There could be another reason Grier wanted Reaves that we don’t know about too. I’m just not getting worked up about any trade involving players that offer very little on the ice.

  15. I actually like the trade.
But, it’s refreshing to hear honest, critical sports content/journalism about the team you’re covering. Even though I disagree with your take, and I’m happy to have an enforcer better than Goodrow on the team (because that’s a real low bar there), it’s great to hear the honest criticism of your own team.

The extreme-homerism of some other sports teams in other media spheres (Slusser, Pavlovic, sfg announcers) is really, really irritating and is straight up unwatchable.

It’s ok to be critical of your own team. It’s because we love our team so much that we’re critical when they do shit wrong.

(…I happen to disagree with you on this one… but I gotta appreciate the honest, critical takes of the very team you cover. It’s refreshing)

  16. Honestly I didn’t get why Sharks fans are whinning over this. I get it that Reaves will not be on the ice when Macklin or whoever gets big hit but I think it’s important to get revenge as well. If u injure our player at least you’ll get your ass beaten so bad.

Anyways, my other pov is that maybe we’re looking at this trade wrong and it’s basically just an AHL trade. Thrun wouldn’t get NHL spot even for the Sharks and Reaves could be useless from Warso POV so then they just simply send him to the Cuda.

  17. Holy crap man. Imagine being a grown ass man and going on a 15 minute bitch fit about a hockey trade. I don't think it's an amazing trade either but this is a little bit of an overreaction. Almost seems like you have some sort of personal vendetta against the guy.

  18. I agree with you. Good for my Leafs, but it's a head scratcher for the Sharks. Reeves is a good vet and is a physical player, so I can see it that way, to help protect the core and help teach the kids. However, I still don't pull the trigger on this.

  19. I like the move. The Sharks" young snipers look like college frat boys, they need a grizzled veteran on the bench that can throw down until these kids fill out and we get more size on the team.

  20. I agree with JD 100%. Apparently he did fight only once in the last season in Toronto, that disappointed the team and their fans. That is way below expectation, and whenever he was on the ice everything got slower. I hope he stays in AHL for the entire season and does not bother Sharks again.
