Sharks Sign Jeff Skinner, John Kelly Out as Blues Announcer, Fillier Highest Paid in PWHL

Welcome back. All right, news of the day video for all you fine people on the internet for your Friday, July the 11th, meaning it’s 7-Eleven day. So, if you haven’t already gone to 7-Eleven, it is 7-Eleven day. Uh, that being said, we’ll start off at the top of the board today. We’re talking about the St. Louis Blues. Uh, big change involving their broadcast. So, they’re going to simoc cast their broadcast between both radio and television. And the radio announcers Chris Kerber and Joey Vatitali are taking over. So, basically, they’re going to be on the FanDuel network. And Playbyplay announcer John Kelly announcing that he’s leaving his role with the St. Louis Blues after 21 years as play-by-play broadcaster. John Kelly is a muchbeloved broadcaster around the National Hockey League. Uh, he will land on his feet. Uh, I have no doubt in my mind that if he wants to continue to call games in the National Hockey League, there are various venues that he can use for that. Uh, I’d be interested to know Blues fans thoughts about this because usually the radio broadcast is much thought about with fan bases. The radio broadcast is usually one that fans universally like and enjoy. So, is this a move that you like as a Blues fan? Is it move is it a move you do not like as a Blues fan? Let me know your thoughts. Uh, Carbono, their first round draft pick this year, has opted to stay in the QMJHL rather than jump ship to go to the NCAA as the CHL has to have some concerns now. So, something that I know I advocated for years ago and Shane Wright was where I had that conversation and in 2020 and 2021 where teams were trying to figure out how they were going to develop their young players. Uh, a lot of young players were able to play in the American Hockey League and it seemed to help some of those young players with their development. So, there was an argument to be made that in in some cases players should probably be able to play in the AHL before they’re 20 years of age. And now with the new collective bargaining agreement, it apparently allows one 19year-old uh to play in the American Hockey League for each organization. So, quick math tells you that’s 32 players. It’s a lot. And so, uh I have not seen a reaction from the CHL on any of this. I don’t know what the CHL is going to be thinking about any of this, but in between players going to the NCAA and now players will be able to go and play in the American Hockey League, there has to be some concern. Uh, a couple of other notes from the uh CBA, which has now been released. I was looking through some of it, but it’s not it’s not not great reading. Uh, but emergency backup goalenders who have been a topic of conversation. So, I’ve I’ve seen some suggestions saying that, well, you know, Flurry could come out and play then as a as a an Ebug. But what I’ve read, what it says in the verbiage is that an Ebug uh which will be contracted to the team is not part of the salary cap. I’ve seen that question being asked. They would not be part of the salary cap because really they’re not an NHL level goalender. What I’ve read is they must not have played an NHL game under a standard players contract. Uh, they must not have played 80 plus pro hockey games. So, you’re not going to see like Tukarass coming in for Boston kind of thing. Uh, they must not have played pro hockey in the last 3 years, which to me is an odd one to have in there. Uh, they must not have an obligation impeding emergency backup goalending capabilities, meaning they have to be available for all 82 games. So, this is a regular pay and gig. And it sounds like if you’re a beer league goalender, might be a good time to get yourself a contract with an NHL club. Uh, and they must not be on a reserve list or restricted free agent list of an NHL club. So, to me, and and this is how I’ve read it. If if there’s anything that’s incorrect in that, please let me know. But it definitely sounds like we could still have ebug stories like we have before, just now the Ebug would be the same no matter what. So, if Chicago is on the road, if Chicago’s at home and they have to go to the Ebug in both situations, they would know who that Ebug is. That’s it’s somebody who’s somebody who’s part of the organization. One thing it did say is that you could have somebody as your emergency backup goalender who has another role in the organization. So, you could potentially have a goalending coach. Um, if they haven’t played in the National Hockey League, you could have them as as the emergency backup goalender. You could have a scout. You could like it it could be somebody from another part of the organization that agrees to travel with the team and serve as the emergency backup just they can’t have played an NHL game seems to be one of those uh lines there. Uh the postseason salary cap as well uh reported that it’s set in stone for the first two years of the collective bargaining agreement. Greg Washenski is reporting this but that it can be reopened after. So you can’t have a CBA without something people are going to complain about. This is something people are going to complain about. basically that if after the first two years of that hard cap existing in the playoffs as well that both the union and the teams can decide to reopen that portion of the collective bargaining agreement to fine-tune it or perhaps to change that uh back to the system that most fans don’t like at this point in time where uh LT um and and salary caps and all that change in in in the playoffs. But, uh, yeah, we’ll see what happens there. Obviously, if it works well through the first two seasons, it’ll probably stay in place, but if it negative negatively impacts, uh, a number of hockey teams, and if it negatively impacts players abilities to play in the playoffs, um, they they could always go back and reopen it, couldn’t they? So, yeah. Yeah, it’s going to be interesting. Uh, Ilia Sroken’s agent, Dan Milstein, has come out. He’s not happy about rumors that Siroken’s on the market. uh he came out to say that Sroken has not been part of any trade discussions. He has a full no trade clause. Basically, what’s happened is that Dobson’s been traded by the Islanders and now just all the speculation and all the rumors have swept up Barcel and Siroken. There’s no way the Islanders would just trade Siroken. I I cannot see that happening. I just that that to me seems crazy. Like I understand that he’s got an expensive contract. If you think the Islanders should be in some kind of rebuild or retool, maybe, but I I don’t think Siroken’s going anywhere. Uh Isaac Phillips has signed a two-year extension with the Jets. Uh it is a two-way contract. Uh at the NHL level, it’s an $812,500 cap hit. So, I wore the the Moose jersey because he’s he’s going to be playing with the Moose this year. So, I figured, yeah, I’ll throw on the Manitoba Moose jersey. And all the best to Phillips, uh PWHL. So, we’re going to get uh some transparency in terms of how much money each player get makes in the PWHL. They voted to publicize uh their salaries, which is the right move to make. Uh and apparently Sarah Filier has become the highest paid PWL player. She signs a 2-year extension with the New York Sirens. Um and salaries will be known soon. They haven’t been released as of yet. Uh, Philly was rookie of the year in the PWHL this season and she was tied for first in scoring. She was the number one draft pick for New York as well. So, uh, Philly off to a really hot start and definitely seems like she’ll be one of the faces of the PWHL going forward for a long time. Uh, and so, yeah, all the best to her. It will be interesting to see what the salaries look like, how much these ladies are getting paid to play hockey in the PWHL. I would imagine it’s better than what they were being paid before. Uh because back in the the CWHL days and all that um basically players weren’t making enough money to cover the costs of their equipment and they they just were not making enough money to justify playing hockey outside of a love of the game only. So yeah, I’ll be interested to see what the the salaries are going to be. I would think they’re they’re not bad considering there’s expansion in the game and there’s going to be eight teams playing this season. Um, and teams continue to sign free agents and and I will get more into some PWHL stuff as we get towards the start of their season. But Phil is going to be the highest paid player this year, at least at this point. Uh, but yeah, probably the highest paid player this year and good honor. Uh, Jeff Skinner has signed a contract with the San Jose Sharks. It is a one-year deal for Skinner. Uh, he will make $3 million. That’s the cap hit. Uh, he’s 33 years of age, playing with Edmonson this past season. 72 games, 16 goals, 13 assists, 29 points. I I don’t think he hurts them on the third line. I think he’ll play a third line role in San Jose. Uh it’s more depth. He could get back to the 20 goal mark. Think along the same lines as like McKay in Chicago. McKay had a chance to play a little bit more in Chicago than he would have elsewhere and he ended up reaching the 20 goal mark. I would not be surprised to see a similar case with Jeff Skinner in San Jose. So Mike Greer continues to add. He added Ryan Reeves last night, adds Jeff Skinner today. some veterans in the lineup to shepherd along the the younger players and that’s necessary. So, we’ll see how that works out for San Jose. So, let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. As always, don’t forget to hit like and subscribe in the event you may not have done so already. Thank you guys so much for all your support. It’s greatly appreciated. I will talk to you again soon.

  1. I really, really hate it when people do that. TV and radio are very different mediums, and neither one is happy when they become one. It's such a middle finger to the fans.

  2. So the requirements for the emergency back up gig are EXACTLY WHAT I PAID $6,000 TO DO IN JUNIORS!?! FUCK! Where is a time machine I need to go back and fix some things hold on.

  3. Yeah not happy as a blues fan. Will be interesting to see how Kerber adjust to live tv because you can't stout your opinion on calls like he does on radio. Like you cant go on about a bad call on live tv as he does on radio. Will be interesting but miss the Kelly and Panger show back in the days.

  4. I am a forever fan of John Kelly because of his time with the Avalanche. He is probably second only to Avs radio commentator Conor McGahey as my favorite in the business. If the Avs didn’t already have Marc Moser (another great commentator) doing the TV broadcast, I would be begging for JK to come back to the Avs.

  5. Oh nice! Now when Im in STL I might actually hear decent commentary and not about the Cardinals! My blind hatred for that team and city might slowly diminish!

  6. Last time I saw something about salaries for the women's pro hockey (which in fact was on this very channel), the max salary for a TEAM was lower than the minimum salary for a PLAYER in NHL. Don't remember if that was PWHL or what was before it.

  7. I was nine when the Blues moved to town and have been a fan ever since. For over forty of those years there was a Kelly broadcasting the games. This is a dark day. Letting Panger go was rough, but this feels like a betrayal.

  8. Blues fan. We are not happy. I imagine this is how Canes fans felt when Forslund's contract was not renewed. JK was one of the best play-by-play callers in sports. Hopefully (if he wants to continue) he gets some national assignments.

  9. Oh dear, I forgot to buy my family a slurpee for 7-11 day… and they all bought me toquitos and chips… there needs to be more decorating done around the city and a proper leadup to the celebration!

  10. would love to get your thoughts on Ike "Iceman" Howard already projected to start the season on the top line with McD and Hyman …personally i think its the best move the Oil made on the offence side so far. granted they are basically stuck on D and goal tending until probably the trade dead line ..if i was GM. would definitely be looking to deal Eklom…granted he stays healthy

  11. I decided to cancel my FDSM subscription this morning. Not only is it my only option of expressing my disagreement with this decision, but I'm just not a big fan of Kerber/Vitale. I don't hate them, but they spend way too much time telling meaningless stories and yucking it up while play is going on. This situation just sucked the enjoyment out of watching the games on FDSM for me. I'll still watch all of their national broadcast games, when available.

  12. I'm not a Blues fan, but enjoyed listening to John Kelly announce Avalanche games back in the late 90s. I've always considered him to be an excellent announcer, as was his Dad before him.

  13. At their worst, Kerber and Vitale are like a bad morning radio show, more intent on entertaining each other than providing meaningful information about the event they're covering. For that reason, the few times I've listened to their radio broadcast, I've found them more annoying than anything else. They literally spend minutes at a time going off on some inconsequential tangent they find personally amusing without saying one word about the action in the game. I suppose some people call that "chemistry." I call it self-indulgent and unprofessional. I'm sure their demographic skews younger than JK, which may be part of what the club was looking for. I'm sure, too, the club will save a buttload of money having those guys handle both radio and TV, a decision that seems to have been made without any appreciation of how the two mediums differ and what compromises would need to be made to make a simulcast palatable for both medium's audiences. No matter how JK and the organization try and spin it, though, firing Kelly and replacing him with a couple of lesser lights whose main qualifications are that they're willing to do two jobs for the price of one was a cheap and classless move.
