BREAKING: San Jose Sharks Select Joshua Ravensbergen 30th Overall, MOST TALENTED Goalie in Class?

the pick is in The San Jose Sharks have made a selection in the 2025 NHL draft I’m Gil Martin I’m joined now by JD Young of Locked on Sharks And San Jose has taken Joshua Ravensburgen with the 30th overall pick in the draft And uh JD how surprised were you that a goalie goes at this spot Uh I was a little surprised especially when you consider the Sharks just gave up a first round pick to try to trade for Yarov Ascar last off season Uh but uh with goalies and their development path it kind of does make sense for the Sharks to continue to add a goalie I’m a big fan of just draft a goalie every year in the draft because you never know when one hits And the Sharks got arguably the best goalie in this year’s draft At least he was kind of considered that heading into the draft Uh he’s a big six foot five kid uh right-handed catcher which is also uh Ascrov So you get the nice uh the Sharks cornering the market on right-handed catching goalies here apparently But uh I I think for San Jose as you I I thought they might go defense here but I I assume they feel like they can grab a defenseman beginning of the second round with the uh 33rd pick uh in the tomorrow morning So uh a little surprised but it once you think about it for a second it makes a lot of sense for Mike Greer How would you describe his goalending style uh you know kind of reading his scouts and kind of talking to some people really quickly uh very composed and confident type of of of player Uh tracks the puck very well I know he’s got some issues with his some like technical issues with his hips but working with the Sharks goalie coach Thomas Spears I have no doubt that they’ll be able to kind of iron out some of those kinks for him And uh we know Mike Greer likes these big athletic goalies I think that’s what drew uh Drew Greer to uh to Ravensburg because of that size and that ability to uh read the puck and track the puck very well which is something we see in Ascrov as well Where do you see him this year And how long do you think it’ll take for him to be NHL ready I assume he’s going to be back in the WHL uh to playing with uh the Prince George Cougars Uh with goalies right we know it takes longer for these guys to develop So and especially now with the potential college option I could see him maybe spending a couple years developing whether it’s in the WHL and then maybe some time in college and then playing uh playing in the AHL So I’m not I don’t think this is a rush type of of position especially again when you have Ascarov uh kind of as your you know long-term piece and then you know maybe Ravensburg in a couple years can start to kind of uh enter the fray here when Ascarov’s maybe uh you know kind of hitting at that like late 20s early 30s and you have two good goalies uh in in in your in your uh back or in your pipeline here So but yeah I I don’t expect Ravensburg to be like NHL ready any time and I with goalies again Just just take your time with him Overall how happy are you with day one of this draft I mean you walk away with Michael Misa who’s arguably the best forward in the draft and then you are walk away with Joshua Ravensburg who’s arguably the best goalie in the draft So uh although it felt like it might have been a little off the board here uh I think you have as a Shark you have to walk away and then knowing you can probably grab a really good defenseman here beginning uh of the second round Like you feel like you’re in a really good spot Uh answering some some potential holes for the Sharks Uh again Michael Misa as your your long-term 2C behind Melbourne and then Ravensburgen as your uh you know potential competitor or you know dual starters with with Ascarov Uh yeah I I I think as a sharks fan you have to be pretty excited All right Well for continued coverage of Joshua Ravensburgen check out Locked on Sharks on YouTube or wherever you get your podcast It’s part of the Locked On podcast network

The San Jose Sharks have made a long-term investment in their goaltending, selecting top prospect Joshua Ravensbergen with the 30th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft! This high-upside pick addresses a crucial future need for the rebuilding Sharks.

Ravensbergen, a towering 6’5″ right-catching goaltender from the Prince George Cougars (WHL), is widely considered the best netminder in the draft class. He combines imposing size with excellent athleticism and poise under pressure, filling the net and making game-changing saves. While goalies take time to develop, Ravensbergen’s strong technical foundation, mental toughness, and ability to track pucks make him a potential franchise cornerstone.

  1. Ravensbergen won't be in NHL till 2030 tbh, great spacing between him and Asky because if Asky is an elite goalie in 2030 then you have a back up for a couple seasons and then can see who wins a potential goalie battle.

  2. Not a shock. Bit if surprise

In a draft with a lot of question marks, a goalie makes more sense. Still with Spence and Fiddler both there, would have thought they'd taken one of the two. They ned the RHD and Fiddler was ranked in the 20's while Spence is a GMMG sort and was ranked around 20th overall.
