A Summer League warning sign in Orlando Magic’s loss? #orlandomagic #nba

This is Philip Rossman Reich, the host of Locked on Magic as the Orlando Magic fall in their second summer league game 89 to86 to the Toronto Raptors. Another game where the Magic showed a lot of fight, showed a lot of grit, played some really good defense, forced a lot of turnovers, had some great moments, saw all of their key players play well. Tristan Dilva looks like he does not need another summer league game, although was trying to be a little too aggressive. Made a lot of turnovers, a lot of mistakes, which this is the time to do that. No Penda had a fantastic game. Looked in control. really made his presence felt on both sides of the ball and Jace Richardson took over the game late as the Orlando Magic tried to get back into the game ultimately falling on a miss three by Tristan Dilva. But there is one point that I want to make about this game and that is that the Toronto Raptors played heavy ball pressure in this game and that’s fine. It’s summer league. You’re going to play aggressive and and the Raptors line change to keep guys fresh so they could keep pressure on the ball. But the Magic really struggled with it. And considering that, yes, it’s summer league. Not a lot’s going to translate. We don’t have Paulo. We don’t have Fron. We don’t have Jaylen Suggs. We don’t have Desmond Bane, but the Magic don’t have a natural point guard in their starting lineup. And that was something that played out throughout the course of this game where the Raptors were able to hound guys who aren’t used to or aren’t confident organizing the team and running offense. That could be a big thing for the Orlando Magic down the road in October. But having said that, Noah Penda played excellent. He really played a lot of point guard. You know, using his size to get the Magic into their sets. And the Magic played extremely well when he was on the floor. Jace Richardson played fantastic down the stretch, organizing the team, keeping them in it, and giving them a chance to win the game in the end. That’s really all you can ask for. So, some good, some bad. It’s summer league. We’ll see him again next time.

The Orlando Magic fell to 0-2 despite encouraging efforts from Tristan da Silva, Jase Richardson and Noah Penda.

But there were some warning signs for the regular season and the way the Magic want to play:

  1. Man Tyus Jones has to make a big difference for us, he is a solid playmaker and we will probably need that, I can see a lot of small ball lineups

  2. That wasn't ball pressure. Those were Fouls! Unless I missed something, it's still a foul to have both your hands on someone as they try to dribble up the court. Some Reggie Miller arm sweeps would have slowed that down.
