Should The New York Jets Target Jauan Jennings In A Trade? | Why It Could Make Sense
All right, guys. What’s going on? Welcome in. So, Adam Shfter of ESPN put out a pretty interesting report this morning regarding 49ers wide receiver Jawan Jennings, saying that he’s scheduled to make $7.5 million this season in the final year of his deal, but he wants a new contract or a trade per sources. The 49ers extended Jennings deal last year, but that does not change how Jennings feels about this year. And I got to be honest, if I put myself in Jennings shoes for a second, I understand wanting a new deal, right? Coming off that type of season, I mean, just under a thousand receiving yards. Think about Jawan Jennings. This is someone who’s a former what, seventh round pick coming out of Tennessee. Always this rotational backup. You know, he would make plays every now and again, but never this crazy impactful piece. never really considered this. You know, wide receiver 1, wide receiver two throughout the first three years of his career, right? If you take a look at his numbers, 2021, only 282 receiving yards. 2022 just over 400 receiving yards, only four starts. And then uh 2023, 265 receiving yards, but then of course popped off in the Super Bowl. He had the throwing touchdown, he had the receiving touchdown. I think he had uh four catches over 40 yards as well. I mean, he was really making plays, right? He he really turned a lot of heads in that u in that game. Ultimately, the 49ers didn’t win it, but it still didn’t change his performance. And then, of course, right, as Sher alluded to, he got extended coming into 2024. Little bit more notoriety, but all of a sudden, the production just boomed. Obviously, we could point to Brandon Aayuk’s injury having a part in that, but man, Jennings just burst out onto the scene. 77 catches. His previous career high was back in 2022 at 35. Right? So 77 snags, 975 receiving yards with six touchdowns. Now Shfter in his words said, “If a new deal is not reached by the time training camp starts next week, Jennings plans to request a trade to a team willing to pay him.” I don’t really see a situation like this forcing San Francisco’s hand in any sort of way. Um, but with that said, let’s just explore the possibility of a Jawan Jennings New York Jets trade. Why would that make sense? At first glance, it’s like, you know, how much of a needle mover is this? But the more you look into it, the more interesting it is, right? The first question, do the Jets need help at wide receiver? Yes. What kind of wide receiver is Jawan Jennings? He’s actually a pretty versatile one. He has a good size, right? 6’3, 200 plus pounds. And my favorite thing about Jennings, he’s played all over the offense, right? He’s played the Z position, the wide receiver, too. He’s played the X when Brandon Iuk went down, the the, you know, the the primary guy within the West Coast offense. He’s even played in the slop, and we just said it, right? He’s playing in a West Coast offense currently with San Francisco. The transition to the New York Jets would be pretty seamless with what a lot of people are assuming Tanner Instrand wants to do on the offensive side of the football. And then, of course, we take a look at the coaching staff, right? Aaron Glenn, first year head coach. Obviously, Jennings is a member of the 49ers here. Has not worked with Tanner Instrin, has not worked with Aaron Glenn, but he has worked with Steve Wilks, right? If we think back, Steve Wils was the DC for San Fran uh that year where they made the Super Bowl. So, Wils obviously has that behind the curtain look at how Jennings practices, how does he challenge DBs? How does he go about his the the day-to-day, right, rehab? Uh, is he practicing hard? Is he taking days off? How is he in meeting rooms? How is he in the locker room as a teammate? How does he handle adversity? All these different things. Wilks probably has uh information on that so we can still reach out and touch base with people. So, we have a coach that’s that’s familiar with Jennings in the locker room and practices and whatnot. We have an offense that on paper fits Jawan Jennings skill set. We know we need multiple wide receivers outside of Garrett Wilson. We right now have a question mark in the slot. We have a question mark with wide receiver 2. Jawan Jennings can come in and do both of those things. We know that Jennings probably isn’t going to be commanding $20 million a year. I mean, you’re looking at where the cap is. You’re looking at what wide receivers are getting paid if the Jets theoretically trade, you know, a pick form or uh like a conditional pick, a late run pick, whatever San Francisco could potentially um, you know, look for in a trade like this. And the Jets have the cap space, the flexibility to hand out a three-year deal, right? say at 11 mil 3 or 33 mil or you if you want to bump it up to 121 13 mil that’s totally fair. Guys in that range are Josh Palmer from the Bills, Jacobe Myers from the Raiders, Rashad Baitman from the Falcons, Darius Sllayton from the Giants. I think Jawan Jennings is kind of right in that that uh that tier that category of wide receiver. you know, Jennings coming off the best season of his career, the more responsibilities, the more opportunities that San Francisco gave to Jennings last season, the more the numbers shot up. Uh, he didn’t shrink in the moment. Obviously, we’ve seen him perform well in the Super Bowl, so he doesn’t shrink in big moments. Uh, again, the Jets have the cap space to go out and potentially make something happen. Look, if a week in training camp we get news that the Jets are acquiring Jawan Jennings for, you know, take your pick, a late round pick, you know, a fifth rounder, what whatever suits San Francisco, that’s obviously realistic and he gets extended on a three-year deal. That to me, honestly, like Jennings does check a lot of boxes just objectively speaking. I I think it’s something to look into. I’m not p pounding on the table saying do a trade a third round pick, trade a second round pick. Obviously not. Obviously not. But if a deal does not get done, if an extension is not signed, if I’m Darren Muji, I’m picking up the phone and I’m at least at the very least inquire. At the very least, inquire. I think one of the biggest flaws of the Joe Douglas regime was you never really felt like there was that proactive approach. Hey, there could be a valuable piece or someone that maybe makes sense for this Jets roster. He’s on the market or he’s available and he signs like a cheap deal somewhere else that it’s just like what? Like we could have paid him more. we could have given him an, you know, a bigger opportunity. Even like the team that he signed with isn’t like a Super Bowl contender. So, it’s not like, oh, he didn’t want to play for, you know, a team like the Jets. Like, there were just a lot of moments like that. Again, like a lack of a proactive approach. Very frustrating. Could Darren Muji potentially pick up the phone and inquire about a potential trade? And another thing, too, I think is relevant to bring up here, if Jawan Jennings was a free agent, right? if he was in this past free agent cycle. Uh we know the Jets went out and signed Justin Fields, Brandon Stevens early on in free agency, made a couple defensive tackle moves, Josh Meers obviously as well. Um if he was out there on the open market given the current wide receiver room, would you have wanted the Jets to be interested? I think that kind of changes how we look at a guy like this because I know for me the answer would be yes. given the flexibility, the the position that you can put him in on the offensive side of the football, given the Jets need for wide receiver, given him being in the prime of his career and coming off that great season, I would have definitely looked into it if I and and pushed if I was Darren Muji. So, you know, obviously the trade compensation is one thing, but uh you know, just I mean, we’re we’re seeing what these wide receivers are going for in the trade market. It’s not all that much. of DK Medaf um is going for a second round pick, you know, George Pickkins going for what he went for, Debo Samuel going for what he went for, Joan Jennings would probably not cost all that much as far as a trade asset is concerned. So anyway, let me know your thoughts down below in the comments section. Thanks so much for watching and as always, scats.

Yes, he would easily be the second best receiver on this roster. And make everyone around him much better
Face it Jets aren’t getting another WR.. why is everybody that’s up for a new contract getting linked to the Jets on YouTube when nobody else is linking these guys to the Jets?
Very cool! Thank you for your attention to detail! 🧡💖
Very interesting and relevant topic! Looking forward to your next video! 😛💕
Trade him for Corley and a 5th that can become a 4th depending on performance!
SanFran can potentially/possibly find their next Debo replacement , drafted by Robert S 🤷♂️
Just my opinion
Can he block? Because Fields cant throw so….
What it comes down to is how much does he actually want. If the jets make the call they better know that answer before making it. Don’t need another reddick situation
This is close, the Question I have is I would rather use the money on retaining both AVT and Simpson. The Jets have 3 young recievers on the roster, play them this year ,and sign or draft a WR in 26
Nice
I like it.
Could become a distraction because of salary, doesn't have enough production to demand anything.
He's very underrated. I'm a big fan of his.
Hi Ian, Like always you do a fantastic job..honestly why would you pay someone who’s had one good season.. He’s not going to get 77 receptions with the Jets.. I prefer to give Tyler Johnson/ Corley an opportunity to earn that #2 WR spot.
Interesting, I would take him, the man is a baller! Nice one Ian
Hmmm…very interesting!
Damn Ian I deleted like 5 comments cuz you said that as i watched. Great points. Very political take. Showed both sides of the coin
He’s good the Patriots should go after him, but they don’t like to trade for nobody
Garrett Wilson is all you got the rest of your receivers are total garbage
use money to bring in an extra pass rusher. i trust the young WRs to step up
He’s worth a fourth round , Damm Patriots got 2/4 rounders. We’re gonna keep the bums we got.
I normally don't go for these hot takes, but this player actually does fit what the Jets want to do. He's not only a clear wide receiver 2, but he's also a top run blocker at the receiving position don't just take my word for it look it up for yourselves. Jauan Jennings would be a perfect player at WR2 for the Jets and they really should consider trading for him.
Most likely he will go to buffalo smh
I think he’s a great player who would instantly be the second best WR on the team. My only apprehension is this: the Jets are going to be super run heavy and I think RB and TE will be super involved in the pass game, so given that how many targets do we expect the WR2 in this offense to get?
