My name is John, and that’s my brother Mike. and my name is Mike and that’s my brother John. It’s our fourth season here as the host of Lockdown Angels. We’re still here talking Angels baseball with you every Monday through Friday, even during this all-star week. There’s a lot of conversations to get to. In fact, we got a lot of conversation to get to on today’s show. Tekken, uh, three big takeaways from the weekend. We’ll talk about where the Halo stand at the All-Star break. But first, Mike, we got to talk about yesterday’s pick of Tyler Brener taking it number two overall. Uh so let’s get into that conversation and everything that’s come with it so far. Yeah, this is from Jeff Ellis who uh is our draft guru around here uh on the Locked on Podcast Network. Uh Tyler Brener came into the year as a potential top overall pick after a big year at UC Santa Barbara. It’s one of the quieter pitching factories according to Jeff in college baseball. It was a rough start for him which is not ideal at a smaller school for a a smaller type of player. The toughest part of the season was early on. It took some time, but Brenner was dealing by the end of the year and he said he should be in a top 10 discussion. Brenner was uh one of the guys that can throw a better change up for his class and uh for Jeff’s money, he said he throws the best one. Throws a really good change up. He combines that with a fast ball, hits the upper 90s and has a a slider, but it’s a bit inconsistent. The lack of a strong third pitch is a common theme with all of the top arms in the draft this year. Brenner is a bit uh lower due to not having played against some of the higher competitions all year long. Jeff said he loves that he’s bounced back, but it did happen against weak competition. He also points out that he was a victim of really bad defense. Uh they didn’t value the defense and value his pitching performance in terms of how their defense responded. Uh he said there’s a bit of a risk with this pick, but he’s got a similar upside to most of the pitchers, the top pitchers in the class. Again, his change up is one of his best pitches, which when added to his athleticism and velocity gives him a look of a potential number two if he develops a slider or can add another pitch like a cutter or a sinker, that could make Brener one of the steels of this draft. Now, Jeff also added in in tweeting out yesterday as the Angels were drafting, he said, “Man, I’m high on Brener, but this is still shocking.” And then he said he followed it up with, “Brener uh may be the best pitcher in this class.” So, he’s got some high high regards. Uh when it comes to Brener, he may have the best pitch in this class. The change up is something that uh again, third time, he really emphasized the change up is really good. Yeah. and and while Jeff and uh Justin were live on Locked on Guardians doing their draft night stuff, Jeff just tripled down on his feelings about Brener. So, that was reassuring. Here’s what scouting director Tim Mlane said uh about Tyler Brener’s second half. It set him apart. He said, “If you look him if you look at him at the second half of this year, I put it up against anybody in the country. He had a great second half. The stuff really ticked up. The body felt good and he took off.” Brener’s last eight starts of the season include a 2.91 erra. Mike, this is key. A.70 fip. Wow. 43.8% strikeout rate, 5.9% walk rate, 43.1 innings pitched, and a 0.92 whip. Here’s what Taylor Blake Ward had to say. Former Lockdown Angels host and Lockdown Angels Hall of Famer. Uh he said that he’s a command specialist. Mid90s fastball, pairs well with a plus change up. Slider flashes above average. He had a down year with poor defense behind him. So, he agrees with Jeff there, a middle of the rotation type. Finally, Lance Brazowski is somebody that we’d like to turn to. Uh he does a lot of great uh pitching uh analytics and and study. And he also is on the marquee sports networks for the Cubs. Um he said nothing stands out about Brener’s release traits. He does have an odd leg kick and a counter rotation in his windup. It reminds me of Bronson Aoyo or Tyler Anderson. Not as dramatic. That being said, the comp here from shapes and a release standpoint look a bit like Michael Lorenzan. If the performance comp looks like Michael Walker’s results, then I think the drafting organization would be happy. Obviously, that was before the Angels specifically took him. Sam Blum then uh gave us a little bit of background on Brenner, who lost his mother unfortunately to cancer back in June, his mother, Jennifer. That made today even more emotional for him and his family. Uh Brenner said, “I know she’s watching over me. She’s so proud of me in a weird way. I went to the Angels. It’s weird how life works. It’s a special moment. So, Mike, this was the number two overall pick. There’s been a lot of hype around the fact that the Angels have that number two overall pick. We talked about what all the experts were saying. This was like a very last minute thing according to some of what the experts said over the weekend and even the day of the draft. Uh, you know, there was Kate Anderson. There was a uh Liam Doyle who went to the Cardinals and um so there was a lot of guys that you know we talked about on Friday that we wanted like Seth Hernandez who ended up with the Pirates. Jamie Arnold was another one. This was surprising and I think it surprised everybody. So let me get your initial reaction to this pick. What do you say? Feels a lot like the conversation we had last year, John, when they drafted Christian Moore because everybody was saying, “Wow, they really went under slot with Christian Moore. They should have went with somebody else, should have got somebody else, but man, you wouldn’t think about that now as Christian Moore made his way through the minor leagues and has been a clutch performer for the Angels at the major league level. And I’m wondering if you you brought up something about makeup when we talked about who the Angels are are drafting, how they’re built, what kind of player they are, what kind of person they are, what they bring to the team, are they gritty, are they gutty to those types of things. And and I think with with Tyler, there’s something about him that that exudes some of that, at least I think, to the Angels organization. He has an interesting makeup. He had to go through uh obviously the loss of his mom this year. He had to go through struggling to open the the season and then recover from that. And so I think that there is a makeup component that the Angels really like. Now, I know he was the 18th prospect on the on the big board for a lot of people. Top 10 for a lot of guys. And so, is it a stretch to grab him at number two when you probably could have gotten him later on or maybe gotten somebody quote unquote better? Feels like a stretch. It doesn’t doesn’t sound like they’re going to save that much money. And so, the people that have thrown out the idea that they’re going to get under slot and under value so that they can save money, that actually isn’t the case with with Tyler. He’s at least going to get $7.5 million according to the rules of how drafting works. He got in all of his like physical stuff in and things like that. I think it’s 75% of the slot value. That’s what it is. Yes. And so he’s going to he’s going to get paid. Um it’s not like he’s going to lose a lot of money. The Angels are going to save a bunch of money, but overall, John, he the lot a lot of what I’ve read about and what I’ve heard is that he is your complete pitcher. He is a he is a guy who has the lowest floor. Maybe not the highest ceiling like a Seth Hernandez, but he has the lowest floor, which means that uh he’s not going to go any lower than what he already is. He’s not going to get worse than what he’s already performed as. And so I I I I like the pick. I like the guy. Sure, I would have loved to have had somebody who pops off the page. I would have loved to have somebody who was a bit more attractive. Found it interesting that Ethan Holiday was not drafted number one. I found it interesting that there was a few other names that were not drafted very high. And so this is one of those drafts where it felt like um you’re you’re playing, you know, bingo, right? And you’re putting all the numbers in and you’re rolling it around and you’re pulling out a name. Next year’s draft should be a bit better and and according to the numbers and according to the stats and the makeup of those players, it sounds like it will be. But overall, this feels like a good pick and it feels like an Angels pick. John, what do you think? Yeah, I’m Mike at number two. I don’t think it was the right choice. Uh because this is a rare opportunity that you have somebody I mean you had your pick of the litter, right? Especially with somebody like Holiday falling to you, Seth Hernandez fell to you. The the Nationals took Willlets and and that’s surprised everybody as well. The first two picks of this draft were a huge surprise. So when the Nationals took Willlets, I was shocked that they took Brener. So to the the things that reassure me is the fact that Jeff from Locked on Guardians, he’s been all over this and had Brener at number five, which I think is great. And coming into this college season, even somebody like Keith Law, who’s very harsh on the Angels, very critical of the Angels and their development and their drafting and all of that stuff, he had Brener as the first arm off the board before the college season started. And so there was a time where this guy was dominant across 2024, he was dominant across 2023. Um, of course, the level of competition is not as high as it would be at other schools out of UC Santa Barbara. One thing that was reassuring to me was Tanner Bbeby was somebody out of uh UC Santa Barbara. So that’s uh reassuring. But Mike, here here’s my opinion on this whole thing. Um, like I said, I feel like it was a bit of a reach at two. I wouldn’t have used the pick in this way. I would have gotten that that guy. I would have at least taken Seth Hernandez if not Ethan Holiday, right? But uh I actually think that when you have a guy who’s fast ball command and the velocity that it’s at uh are fairly strong and then the change up um and it’s more than just Jeff saying it. Like one of the best change ups if not the best change up in this class. I actually think that he has what you’re looking for in a prep player and that is a very very high ceiling. Now, if you were to take somebody like a Jamie Arnold or a Kate Anderson, they’re they’re pretty complete, right? Obviously, you have to get them ready for the majors, but they’re pretty complete players. And I understand everybody’s critical of the idea that Perry’s going to rush this guy up. I don’t necessarily think that that’s the case. And here’s why. Brener needs a third and a fourth pitch. He’s got a great fast ball. He’s got a great change up. Uh, and you know, he’s been working with a slider that hasn’t been too fantastic. That’s something that I think that they can work with. But here’s what I mean when I say that he’s got what you’re looking for in a prep player, and that’s a high ceiling. That is the the world is your oyster. The expectations are high. Because, let’s face it, prep players are high school guys, and the reason you take them is because of their potential. And when it comes to Tyler Brener, I think he kind of has those same potential marks as a prep player. Maybe not an Ethan Holiday, maybe not a Seth Hernandez, right? But a prep player that you should be taking at a number two spot. Now, he is a college guy, not a high school guy, not a prep player. I think he has the potential to be really great. And the reason why I say that is because his baseline of this fast ball and change up um and the way they grade out, that’s where you start. And like you were saying, he’s got a high floor, right? And and so he at least won’t be worse than that. But I actually think that if you do this right, if you develop him right, if you get him to work in that third and fourth pitch like Jeff suggested, that slider gets better, maybe there’s a a sinker in there or a cutter or something like that. This is the guy that you have to spend time on, you have to work with, you have to develop, and you have to get him to add a pitch. That takes time, that takes effort, but that’s exactly what you do with a prep player. A prep player needs time, development, effort, intentionality, right? And so, I think everything that we want in a number pick being a prep player, you’re going to get in Tyler Brenner. Again, I’ll repeat. Is he going to have the the high ceiling of a Jackson uh not Jackson, Ethan Holiday or or Seth Hernandez? No. And I know Holiday is a position player. Like I said, I wish they would have taken somebody else at two, but I think the qualities that are here are similar to what you would have gotten in a prep player anyway in the sense that you have to invest. You have to extract and, you know, squeeze out that sponge of what you think this guy is capable of. And again, before this college season, what would have been the top college arm off the board had he not had such a difficult year? And a lot of people are kind of attributing that, including Brener himself. He had a great article with Sam Blum that, yeah, the stuff with his mom really kind of messed him up. And he actually said as her decline got worse, he got better on the mound because it was kind of a place for him to channel his emotion, channel his anger at what was going on with his mother and and you know, the situation. And so I think that maybe perhaps had this not been the circumstances, it would have changed things. Now I know the level of competition is not as great at UC Santa Barbara, but I will say this, uh, for who he has faced and for what he is able to do, um, he actually, I think over the course of the season, had a a 2.15 fip or something really low, his fielding independent pitching. So again, you remove that bad defense behind him and talk about what he can control. That is significant to me. The strikeout rate is significant, Mike. The 6% walk rate is significant. So all of the factors that Tyler Brenner can control himself as a human, as a person, as a person on the mound, as a pitcher, those are good signs to me. So again, not the not my first choice, that’s for sure. But I think the investment you have to make in this guy is going to require what you’d have to put into a prep player. What do you think? Yeah, 100% agree. I I I I like I like what your uh analysis is there. I uh one one comment on, you know, are they going to rush this guy to the major leagues? Who cares? Who cares? Like they’ve their first round picks their first round picks have been great. So I I love that people like continue to make that a negative and it’s not a negative. I mean you’re running Zack Neto and Nolan Shaell and Christian Moore. keep doing it. Then if that’s how the the Angels are going to compete and if that’s how the Angels are going to be a playoff team soon, then keep doing that. People who want to go back to this, you know, this is what they again, I said it on Friday. All you’ve seen is baseball teams do this same thing for hundreds and hundreds of years and now the Angels are trying to do it differently. Cool. Let’s try to some do something different, right? Kaggleon got drafted and he’s up this year. Cam Smith got drafted last year. He’s up this year. That’s going to be the trend moving forward. I 100% I 100% believe that that’s going to be the trend moving forward. The fact that it’s the Angels doing it and it’s the fact that the Angels fans are throwing fits about it is just silly to me. And and I would even say Chase Burns too got called up and and you know got rocked in his second start with the with the Reds. Had a pretty decent outing against the Yankees his first time out. But um yeah, I think you’re right. I think that’s going to be the uh the tradition from here on out. So yeah, we wanted to make that our first topic of the day because uh there’s certainly a lot to be said about this. So, thanks for making Lockdown Angels your first listen of the day. Coming up, we’re going to tell you about the Angels weekend felt like uh the highs of the Angels that we usually experience and the lows of the Angels we usually experience. We’re going to try to condense our usual takeaways from the weekend into this segment because there’s a lot to talk about before we get to the All-Star break. So, Mike, I’m going to start with Friday’s game. The Angels won this one six to five in a ninth inning walk-off. It was Travis Darno who walked it off with a pinch hit RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. The first Angel with a pinch hit walk-off since Michael Stefonic on July 17th against the Yankees in 2023. So that was I remember that moment. That was really exciting. Uh it’s the sixth walk-off hit for Darno in his career. He had two last season. Here’s how we got there. Mike Oh was hit by a pitch. Ranifo singled. Then Darno hit the single to knock in Oh. I felt like that was appropriate. considering we’re always talking about who’s in and who’s out between those two. But one big thing you need to know from Friday’s game, the Angels offense kept the Halos in the game. Zack Neto hit a leadoff home run. It ties the Angels season single season record with seven leadoff home runs with Brian Downing. Oh played a key role offensively. He was on base four times. Two walks, the hit by pitch, and a hit of his own. He even stole a base in the bottom of the fifth that led to a run. Mike Trout was on base four times. He had three walks. One was intentional and one hit. And that was a double. Renifo reached base four times, three hits and a walk. Nolan Shaell was on base four times, three hits and a walk. 12 hits and six runs for the Angels. Did you notice how many times I didn’t say strikeout in this one, Michael? Because that was significant as well. They needed those runs because Tyler Anderson struggled to hold the lead. He went up uh he went five innings, but he gave up eight hits and four runs on Friday night. Yeah. Let me take you to Saturday’s game. Angels win this one 10 to five. More of an offensive showing, and the Halos had a four-run bottom of the eighth inning to really solidify the victory. They were led by Zack Netto, Nolan Shaell, and Mike Trout. The runs came at a really good time because the top of that inning, Sam Bachmann gave up two runs in that top of the inning, and it made it a one-run lead. And that’s was it was great for them to come back. And that that really brings us to the second big thing you need to know from the weekend from Saturday’s game is the Angels were six for 12 with runners in scoring position and they cashed in runs when they needed that. Mike Trout led the way with four RBI’s including his 17th home run of the season. After the game, he said, “Yeah, I got a lot of homers.” Because he’s, you know, closing in on 400. But he said, “I still got a lot left in me.” I like that. Sound like Mark Henry. Henry, I got a lot left in the tank. Uh Nolan Showell had his third three hit game of the week on Saturday. In fact, he had 10 plus hits in a fourame span up until this moment. And then Zach Neto had two hits. So did Travis Darno and Louie Reanhifo. Angels had 15 hits, John, in this game and four walks. It backed you Kikuchi who got the win five and two/3. Six hits, three runs, one walk and five Ks. Top of the six, John. Kind of scary. Kuki Kikuchi gets hit by a 105 mph line drive off off the bat of Josh Naylor and it hits him in the left shoulder and in the bicep area, but he stays in the game because he is uh he is the man. That guy that guy was you could tell he was struggling. Now, he did end up leaving one batter later, but that’s what happened on Saturday. John, take us to Sunday’s game. Yeah, on Sunday, Mike, uh the Angels lost this one five to one. Here’s the thing you needed to know. Uh the Angels uh 500 is an elusive number for them and getting over 500 is even more elusive. Elusiver if you will. They fell again on Sunday. No no no offense, bad defense cost them this one in the top of the fourth with two on and nobody out. Soraniano got a ground ball to Monata and he booted it over there at third. It cost them a double play and a run. Soraniano couldn’t pick up Monata with a shutdown inning after that. He got the next two batters out, but gave up back-to-back doubles that gave the Diamondbacks a 4 to1 lead at the time. Mike Trout was the only offense for the Halos. He had an RBI single that scored Neto. Uh, one other note, Taylor Ward. Oh, this is from you, Mike. I’m sorry. Let me let me uh pass this one along to you. Yeah, I uh it was my own personal note. Mike note, and I here’s what I wrote. Taylor Ward should get traded. Tired of watching him guess and guess wrong. I mean, I know I I get it. Leads the team in home runs and RBI’s and all of those things. That’s fantastic. But my goodness, when you’re when you’re striking out, watching in in big moments, when you’re guessing wrong, I mean, yesterday he guessed wrong and it was a it was a fast ball right down the middle and he’s just standing there. And so just just so frustrating and so maybe that uh maybe that was just an emotional note uh rather than a uh reasonable, logical note, but I had I had to put that in there. Well, I just um and I said it when we opened this segment is just everything about this weekend encapsulated what this season has been for the Halo so far. It was a lot of exciting moments. It was the walk-off. It was a dominant win on Saturday and then you’re you know the Angels screwed up in the field uh to lose five to one on Sunday and then you know nobody could hit on Sunday and I know Mel Kelly is uh a good pitcher for the Diamondbacks probably going to get traded as they were discussing on the on the broadcast of course but yeah it it just felt like everything that you have seen so far from the Angels this season really close one-run game that comes down to the wire and a walk-off and It’s exciting. And then the next day, yeah, this is what this offense is capable of. 10 to five win. And then on Sunday, oh, they can’t do anything. They can’t do anything. Right. They can’t hit, they can’t field, they can’t do anything. Right. Right. And so that’s that’s that’s this season in a nutshell, isn’t it? Yeah. And I I know that they won the series and we are are huge on, you know, winning series and not winning streaks. And I love locked on every day or Lisa that that reminds us of that every time we we win a series. Appreciate that. But it would have been great to be able to beat 500 to finish out the the first half. This was a wild home stand, John. They had a Monday walk-off against Texas. Then they lose 13 to1 on Tuesday to Texas. Then an 11 to8 win versus Texas. Then an 11 to4 loss versus Texas. Got another walk-off on Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. 10 to five of course on Saturday. And then they lose 5 to1. Four to four and three on the home stand. Would have been better if it was 5-2, but I get it. They they won the series. It was just one of those things where it it’s it was frustrating because you could see what the potential is and just as you’re looking at it. It it feels like it’s just out of reach, right? It’s not necessarily in your hand, but you if you could just get on your tippy toes and you could reach out like that’s what it feels like with this team right now in as they’re pursuing being good. Now, I know starting the season I said they’re they’re 500 at best and so maybe this is just who they are and I was accurate, right? and and I don’t want to be accurate, but that maybe that’s just who they are and this is just how they’re going to play, which then will, I think, shape up what happens at the trade deadline, right? Like like what what they decide to do at the trade deadline. It it all kind of will depend on what they do over the next maybe week and maybe two weeks, maybe a couple series. But I I can see this team, if they’re going to be two games under 500 to the trade deadline, I could see them trying to make some trades to make this team better. But I’ll say it again. I don’t want them to trade anybody that is going to hurt the future of this team. That’s why I would say Taylor Ward is probably the best trade piece they got because they could trade Taylor Ward, maybe get a ready now player and then an almost ready now player for the future. Yeah, it’s somebody that you could certainly plug in the rest of the rest of the way too and and uh you know, teams are willing to vive for him. They’re willing to trade for him. So, it’s going to be interesting to watch what the Angels do after this All-Star break. So, here we are at the All-Star break and uh we are two games under 500, John. And it’s not too different than what the last, I don’t know, nine years have been, 10 years have been, right? 2016 at the All-Star break, the Angels were 37 and 52. 2017, they were 45 and 47. 2018, they were 49 and 48. 2019, 45 and 56. Uh 2020 about the same. Uh actually they were better in 2020 45 and 44. Uh 2022 39 and 53. LA uh two years ago 45 and 46. And of course last year 41 and 55. Again 47 and 49. I have a question for you. If if I were to tell you that the Angels at the All-Star break were going to be 47 and 49 and I was tell I’m telling you this before spring training. Yeah. Would would you have believed me and would you have taken it? I would have taken it. I would have believed you because I said this from the beginning. I think all the talent across this team has the potential to get into the playoffs through a wildcard spot. Um, and I think even for a while there, had they played their cards right, could have been in the mix in the AL West. Obviously, Houston’s kind of run away with that now, but they’re still in the running for a wildcard spot, so to speak. Um, but Mike, everybody who’s competing for that has all really kind of had their moment of taking off. Um, I look at the Red Sox, they finished going into this all-star break, they won 10 games in a row, right? And now they’re they’re ahead of the Rays in the standings for the AL East. and Toronto had a huge run and they’re at the top of the AL East and the Yankees are the Yankees, so they’re still in competition. And so, yeah, it’s it’s funny to me that um you know, they’re sitting at 47 and 49. I would have been like, “Yeah, that sounds about right.” Because I think like you have said all along, they’re they’ve been a 500 team. And I know, you know, they’re two games under 500, but let’s for argument sake in general, this is where they’ve been all season long. They get up to 500, they fall back down, they get back up to it. They’re somewhere in between, you know, two games under and 500 for the most part. What I’m surprised by is that 2021 season, 45 and 44. That’s crazy to me. Uh, and then also 2022 was when they got off to that really hot start and then had the 14game losing streak. Uh, 39 and 53. That’s how bad things got for them uh coming into the All-Star break. And then la uh 2023, the last time that they were competitive, one game under 500. So, I think that that kind of makes me nervous about where this team thinks that they could be uh by the trade deadline and how they’re going to go about it because in 2022 uh 20, sorry, 2023, one game under 500. Now, the incentive there was, well, we got Trout, we’ve got Otani, we’ve got Rendone, who’s actually on the field, and then, you know, Trout’s hand, uh, the hammock bone broke, and then Rendone got hurt, and then Otani was kind of the only piece there, and then they made all those like supplemental moves, and then they go out and buy at the deadline, thinking that’s going to help, and then everything fell apart after that. And so, you know, that was the incentive in 2023 to to buy and now they’re two games under 500 here. Um, it’s going to be really interesting to see how they move forward. Uh, 47 and 49. What would you have said prior to this season? I would say I would have said, yeah, 500. Um, I I think I would be excited about it because that means that they are not sinking so far deep into, you know, despair like they have in the last few years. They’re actually fun to watch. And that’s the thing I would say about this team right now is they are a fun team to watch, especially when they win, right? And the the last two games outside of Sunday were a really fun it was it was fun games to watch and watching them come back and having veterans like Travis Darno come through. I loved that. And I know I’m a Logo Logan Hoppy, you know, fan and truther on this show, but I would say like I I love having Darno who is somebody who is strong on this team as a veteran. I also love having him in the lineup a little bit more often, especially if he’s going to swing a hot bat because wins are really great. Wins are nice. I want to see Lomino Hobby develop, but I also would love to see this team win. And if they’re going to chase a playoff spot, they have to they have to get some wins, right? And so, do I do I like the approach? Do I like what the Angels are doing overall? There there’s a lot of discussions that can happen there. I just I’m choosing to land in the category of, hey, if they’re going to try to compete and they’re going to try to win, great. Just don’t sell the future for that. and and I’m totally in. Yeah. Don’t mortgage the future for what you think you have now. Um there’s a very interesting article and and maybe we’ll get to that later this week. Kenley Jansen talking to you Sam Blumma of the Athletics saying I don’t want to be traded because what I came here to do was to help this team win. Like I came here and the mission for me is the Angels. So I I feel like that kind of adds a wrinkle to this whole conversation about like well are they going to sell? are they going to buy and da da da da you know the last guy who said he wanted to help the team win he wanted to stay was show Otani right and so that and then we all know how that worked out like we passed on this apparently huge deal with the Padres’s apparently huge deal with the Rays like so there and and Kinley obviously is not Otani but uh he is somebody who’s super valuable and then you have to think about well if they do trade a Tyler Anderson if they do trade a Luis Renifo are they valuable enough to get you anything back Because last year, you know, we saw moves like, you know, Alex Cobb traded from the Giants to the Twins. It got him back a a single A pitcher, a 19year-old, right? And so, if that’s the kind of return that you’re getting for some of these guys, which is probably what it’s going to be other than like Kenley Jansen, then the return might not be worth it. And it might be worth it to try and go for it even if you maintain what you already have. Right. Obviously, this team is still very hit and miss. uh they’re they’re uh getting better at being consistent, but still oftentimes very inconsistent. But I think one goal, one stated goal that we wish that would happen this season, and I think it is happening, is the narrative shifting season. Mike, I think the narrative around the Angels is changing. Uh I think that people are seeing the success of picks like Shauno and Neto and Christian Moore and and again I know Moore is hurt right now but uh it I think that there is a narrative shift around the Angels. Um despite their ownership, despite their GM, I think that the Angels on the field are doing everything they can to say, hey, you know what, we got a good thing going here and it might be a year away, two years away from when we really get cooking, but this is a this is a good place to be right now. And I think it’s going to incentivize more people to come and help this team out. Kind of like what Kenley Jansen said. Hey, thanks for making Lockdown Angels your first listen of the day. Are we really surprised Perry picked a college guy? That’s his MO. It’s worked well for the Angels so far
I was shocked after the Nationals pick and turned off my tv after the Angels puck
Gotta take Holliday and not second guess it.
What a joke! This is why we lose! Art, sale the team for the love of God! What a disaster!
i remember they killed the angels for drafting zeto from a smaller school they criticized the moore pick they criticized the schanuel pick, let the kid pitch a couple then judge the pick
I'm excited by the Angels bringing up young players quickly to the majors. It has made their team more interesting to me. How can anyone argue with Neto, Schanuel, and Moore? They've done well! The fact that the same scouting and management team who drafted those three players also drafted Bremner, I'm going to remain optimistic about this pick.
My reaction is Perry and his staff blew it…# 2 pick you get a top pick not pass the best pick to the Mariners …i see excuse making by you guys today that was unexpected and
disappointing …the Angel screwed up Period…
Mike, I think you meant the highest floor, meanimg his low expectation (floor) is higher than others.
The Nats picking Willits told us that Holiday was not going to sign for slot or under. Then Andreson signing right away with the Mariners told us that he already had a deal in place, so he probably told the Angels and Nats that he would need to sign over slot with them.
This was to save money. Let’s all just be honest
As long as Tyler stays healthy, he is a good pick! Nothing is guaranteed in the draft! Hope all goes well with his journey!😊
When the Washington Nationals passed on Holiday I thought we were going after him as we need a 3B so I was blown away by the pick. Not even a top 3 pick. I truly believe because we can get him under slot it was all about money. So let's see if they pull off getting another Dana in later rounds like they did in the past
This pick was confusing to say the least. As you mentioned, they probably could have picked him in a later round and still gotten Holiday or Hernandez at the top. I can't wait to hear Perry's spin on this
Epic whiff by the Angels in this draft. Gonna cost Minasian his job
Angels can't get out of their own way. The Angels don't develop players, they don't know how.
Angels are allergic to a winning record
Unfortunately The Angels Peeps picked Tyler. We just have to trust the process. Great show Suoer Halo Bros
No opinion on the draft. I haven’t followed any of the draft talk or prospects but it sounds like this pick is mostly unpopular with the fans.
Bremner sounds like a project to me. He’s probably a fine pitcher and maybe he eventually has success in the majors, but he’s not a number 2. Maybe he can be a piece we trade away next year lololol. Half joking but you know angels would do it.
The Angels issue this year is the same that it has been for at least the last 10 years, starting pitching. If you have solid starting pitching and good defense, it gives you the ability to have those runs where you can win 12 of the last 15 and keep that up for the year. Other than Kikuchi there's really not been consistency in the starters for a prolonged period of time which makes it tough to make a move in the playoff hunt. The hitting can be great, but without consistent solid starting pitching and good defense, it's a tough road to make the playoffs.
As far as the draft, I would have loved to see them go after a bigger splash player that was ranked at least up there in the top 5 or 6. With that said, there have been plenty of big splash players picked over the years that never even got close to the majors. So while this pick does seem disappointing, time will tell if they got it right or if they really screwed up that number 2 draft position pick.
Hey we are over .500 in inconsistency
Couple of notes:
-For clarity: Going underslot does not equate to "cheaping out." The Angels have a total amount of money that they can spend up to, based on the total of the slot values of each pick they have in the draft. So, by taking someone under slot, they are able to use that money to sign and incentivize players, such as 3rd-round pick Johnny Slawinski out of high school, to sign with them and not go to college. For example: the last two years of the draft, the Angels spent more than their allotted bonus pool money, exceeding it by nearly $600,000 in 2024 and $400,000 in 2023.
-UCSB had Bieber, not Bibee*** 😅
-Mike meant to say high floor, not low floor. Pick got us all verklempt!
I wish the HAlos would have taken a poer bat who can play 3b for us today then our infield can play together for the next 4-6 years minimum, Andrew Fisher from Tennesse would have been a nice pick
I am not giving a good grade to PM here. Maybe in 2-3 years I am wrong.
Working with Boras clients is a fact of life and if your GM can't deal with Scott, then you have a failed GM. Lots of GM's don't want to deal with Scott but they do
Watch this dude get used as a bullpen peice
Bremner was in the conversation for SP1 heading into 2025. He had a slow start. Baseball America mentioned recently that there's not as big a gap as some might think between Bremner and guys like Arnold and Anderson. In a draft where there were no Chase Burnes, Skenes, etc, this is not as blasphemous as some might think. I would have gone the prep route, that being said, with Seth or Jo Jo.
This is the nail in the coffin. THIS IS THE MLB equivalent of passing on Peyton Manning to draft Ryan Leaf.
You guys talked about Bremner's floor and ceiling, but NO ONE has a hogher celining in this draft than Holliday. And Holliday's floor is mich higher than Bremner's. Bremner is the pitching equivalent to LaViolette: both started the year highly rank, both underperformed during the seaon and both slid down draft boards…for a reason.
This shows that Perry Minion and the Angels front office are unqualified to lead this franchise.
They had the unanimous #1 prospect on the board. IF they were sold on Bremner, who was ranked 18th, they should have drafted Holliday. Then find a team drafting lower that covets Holliday, have a deal in place to have THAT team draft Bremner. Then the Angels trade Holliday for Bremner and either extra picks or another prospect. That's what a smart GM would do.
Instead we got PM. Baseball's most inept GM when it comes to drafting pitchers.
PM has drafted 56 pitchers since he was hire. Not a single pitcher has hit. And all of the "top-ranked" prospects he drafted (Detmers, Dana, Silseth, Anderson, etc) have struggled in the Bigs.
If anything, PM has a solid track record of drafting infielders. (Neto, Schanuel, Moore). So he should have stuck to his strength and drafted Holliday. Then their infield would be set for a decade. And they could have addressed their pitching needs later in the draft and in FA.
As terrible as this organization is, we don’t have the luxury of drafting prep players. We need players to contribute within 1-2 years. Angels doing angels things SMH
Sick of ward guessing and jogging lol. Get off our team. When I see him sprint first to home I wonder where that is in the outfield
With the way the Mariners develop pitchers, Kade Anderson will haunt the Angels for many years to come.
Even though the record seems like it's the same old Angels, this season feels different. The players are different. They're competitive and looks motivated to win. It's just a different vibe. They're also beating teams that are over .500 (Now I wish they could beat that are under .500 teams. This would have changed their win record). I agree with Jon about trading Ward and maybe Renjifo. Right now, they have value. Maybe we can find a starting pitcher (I know that's a reach).
Is guessing what pitch is coming the Angels' hitting approach. Our batters watch to many pitches down middle, sometimes two in one at bat. Then strikeout on a ball outside the zone. I would like to hear from our hitting coach… is that our approach?
I do think they’ll call him up soon. Bremner was a bit of a swingman due to his struggles this year. How have the Angels used their pitching prospects? Out of the pen. Something Bremner is already used to. So maybe they try to develop him and use him in the bigs.
Just saw a post that said the mariners had bremner as their #3 pick. If that’s so I’m happy😂
My only issue is why not trade the #2 pick and move down if Bremner is who the Angels wanted.
Angels continue to make non competitive moves.
Can we agree that Ward shouldn’t be in the 4th spot? This guy really blows my mind 4 strike outs in a game, always caught looking.
Jon and Mike contradicted each other but they didn't go any further. So I will do that for them.
Jon said the Angels will have to put "some investment" into Tyler Bremner to help him develop, reach his ceiling. This makes sense because Bremner only has two plus pitches. Without further development, a two pitch pitcher might top out as a relief pitcher, not what you want from a first round pick and the second pick in the draft.
Mike first said that he agreed with Mike but then did a 180, saying that it is OK if Angels "rush" Bremner to the majors, "who cares" were his exact words. First, that negates the concept of "investing," putting time and effort, into helping Bremner reach his ceiling. Second, it is also unrealistic to think Bremner will be able to master a third and perhaps a fourth pitch and move up to the majors in a short period of time. I suppose it is possible, it just doesn't seem to me that is a likely scenario. Third, position players and pitchers are different animals. What might be acceptable with a position player could be disastrous with a pitcher. An organization not only wants to develop a pitcher's pitches, mechanics and pitch selection, they want to help build his confidence. Throwing a pitcher in the deep end without proper development will tend to do the opposite of that.
Final thought. The choice the Angels made to draft Tyler Bremner was probably the wrong one. What is Bremner's ceiling anyway, a number three or four starter? If it works, then Perry Minasian will get some bragging rights, saying he was right when most of the baseball world thought he was wrong and the Angels will get a quality pitcher, though not a dominant one. But it will take some work from the Angels organization to help Tyler Bremner reach his potential. It seems to me this selection was a medium to high risk move for only a moderate reward possibility. Time will tell us how this decision works out, but I wish the Angels had made a higher possible reward choice.
Love the pick
A very interesting parallel between the Angels and the Ducks recent drafts, the Ducks had the #2 pick a couple years ago and everyone was raving about Fantili the #1 college prospect and seemingly obvious choice and they went with Leo Carlson a lesser hyped 18 yr old Swede. They believed that he had the much higher ceiling and they are on track to be right. They also took Senneke with their 3rd overall which shocked everyone and then he has a monster year in the "minors" and people say if he was draft eligible this year he could have gone top 3. I hope Bremner proves everyone wrong.
I get it only if they use the money saved to sign other kids from high school later that other teams give up on because of cost
I disagree with saying that he played at a lower level of competition. UCSB played a lot of good teams don’t believe the espn SEC hype.
