Oilers Trade O’Reilly to Tampa for Howard, Hakstol Added to Avs Coaching Staff

Welcome back. All right, so a trade has been made in the National Hockey League. So I figured we could do another news of the day video, discuss the trade that has taken place. I am sure that fans of the Oilers and the Lightning will both be happy. At least I think so. So Sam Riley, right-winger, going to Tampa Bay. Uh he was the number 32 pick in 2024 by the Edmonton Oilers. Played in London of the OHL this past season. 62 games, 28 goals, 43 assists, 71 points. Going the other way, Isaac Howard. Of course, Isaac Howard, Tampa Bay has been looking to trade for a while. Uh he made it clear he wasn’t going to sign with the Tampa Bay Lightning. So, he was a number 31 pick in 2022 and playing for Michigan State this past season. 37 games, 26 goals, 26 assists, 52 points. He has reportedly already signed his entry- level contract with the Oilers. Uh O’Reilly has already signed his entry level contract previously, so Tampa doesn’t have to worry about that. And for Isaac Howard, the expectation is from Edmonton that they want to have him in the lineup as soon as possible, meaning this season he has every chance at a roster spot. Uh when I did the Oilers video a few days ago, I talked about, you know, they could use a little bit more depth up front, and this definitely gives them that. Now, there is some belief that maybe O’Reillyy’s going to be the better player long term, but for right now, this works for the Evans Oilers. I think this works for both teams. But I’m wearing an Oilers jersey cuz I do like the the fact they went out and got the player that I’m sure there were other teams uh in the running for. So let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. I would imagine most Oiler fans pretty excited. So we had a couple more depth signings today. Extensions. Uh Cormier extends with the Vegas Golden Knights. A one-year contract, two-way deal, $775,000 at the NHL level, $100,000 at the AHL level. Uh, Adam Beckman has signed a one-year extension with the Islanders. It pays him 775,000 at the NHL level, 150,000 at the AHL level, 200,000 guaranteed. So, as I say, uh, that means that if he spends the whole season in the AHL, he gets a bump at the end of the season to that 200,000 mark. That’s not too shabby. Uh, I don’t usually report on assistant coaches, but I thought this was interesting and noteworthy, so I put it on the board. Uh Dave Haxall has been hired as an assistant coach by the Colorado Avalanche. Uh it I think Hackall is one of those coaches that might be better as an assistant than as a head coach. And I don’t mean that as any sort of an insult. There are definitely some coaches that I think are better suited. Uh but Haxall being brought on by Colorado is going to change that that feeling behind the bench just a little bit. Uh we’ll see what ends up happening there. And I wanted to share a nice feel-good story. One thing that I I do think the NHL does quite well is it supports youth hockey. And an example of that is Leon Dryidle today in Cologne, Germany, uh going over to donate new equipment to a youth hockey program in his hometown. And uh that is one of those feel-good stories that the National Hockey League seems to do pretty well. Uh there are times where we talk about the PR with the NHL, it can be a little bit shaky, but I think in terms of what Dry Cidle did here, uh it’s a nice gesture and it’s it’s nice too to see that they’re they’re giving equipment to these young players cuz hockey equipment is very expensive. So you’re really helping them out by getting them new equipment. And for the National Hockey League, they can do that. They donate it. It’s, you know, like a charitable donation. So uh great on them and great on Dry Settle to do that as well. And I know that’s done by a lot of teams. There’s a lot of lot of players to do that, but I wanted to put it on the board today as Dry Cidital’s in the news for said action. But let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. As always, hit like and subscribe in the event that you may not have done so already. I’m in the process now of basically going through all the jerseys, putting them in as numerical an order as I can in terms of my favorites and maybe not as favorites. Um, I’m done up to Nashville so far and the ones that are over here, but I still have all the AHL jerseys to do when I get done with that. and I’m already up to 257. So, it is it is going to be an extensive list. Uh, but let me know your thoughts. Hit like and subscribe if you haven’t done so already. Thank you guys so much for all your support. It’s greatly appreciated. I will talk to you again soon.

  1. Being a Lightning fan, it is unfortunate that the Bolts weren't able to make ends meet with Howard but I like that they got another first round pick with a lot of promise in this trade. I think O'Reilly will be a solid addition to the Lightning lineup when he joins.

  2. As a Tampa fan I'm really happy with this trade. Last thing we need is another Jonathan drouin on our hands. I'm just really happy we got somebody decent for him but I would have been okay with almost any prospect.

  3. Technically Vancouver is probably farther, but you can't get much further away than Edm from Tampa and I'm thrilled about that. He's not as talented as Drouin and he's had a good career but I still hate that dude after acting like he did. I wish Howard and Drouin no success in the NHL.

Everyone is loving the trade for Tampa but there's like a 90% chance JBB trades him for an NHL Dman. I would if I were JBB.

  4. Growing up playing hockey in Arkansas and not being from a super wealthy family… hockey gear was every birthday and Christmas present because there would have been no way to afford it otherwise!

  5. NCAA Player of the year and Hobey Baker winner traded for a projected 3C who finished like 5th in scoring on his own team in the CHL lol. Oil did great work I think.
