Scout’s Eye with Matt Williamson: Building a bully
Hello, I’m Matt Williamson at Williamson NFL. Good to have you. Last pod of the week, unless something crazy happens. Um, and I was listening to Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks’s podcast, um, moving the sticks. It’s a good one. and they were talking about the Steelers trade, you know, Ramsay and all that type of thing. And if you don’t know, Daniel Jeremiah was a scout for the Ravens. And coincidentally, when I got fired from the Browns, he got hired the next day and maybe even moved in my office. I don’t know. But I really respect his work. Um, and he was talking about this trade as was Bucky, who’s also a former scout. and they started to really dig into the season the Steelers off season. And why I bring up DJ is a big saying in his Raven days and he was part of when the Steeler Raven rivalry was at his best. Suggs, Ben, you know, you know the names. And a big thing they would say in the Ravens, you know, scouting room and behind the scenes, we have to build a bully. You know, this we’re not making friends here. you know, I’m not looking for someone to babysit my kids. I am building a bully. And that’s what that rivalry was all about. And they said that because Ramsay’s kind of a bully, you know, like not everyone likes him. He is outspoken. He is nasty. He is physical. And they started talking about a lot of the Steelers offseason additions. Almost all those bigname guys are that way. Now, it could go wrong, you know, like if this team starts out two and six and Rogers on McAfee and Ramsay’s outspoken and all this stuff, sure, but Metaf on the field is a bully. I mean, Slay has a ton of attitude. I mean, he actually was on the drive host with Dale Li and he calls in and, “Hey, this is Slay. What do you want?” you know, like just attitude all day long. Ramsay, tons of attitude. Rogers, tons of attitude and was something to prove late in their career. These are guys have had a lot of success. And where I’m going with this, too, is Tomlin was part of those build a bully, Ravens, Steelers rivalries as much, you know, right in the heart of it, of course. and his greatest strength probably is dealing with big attitudes relating to players. So, I just wanted to stress that I don’t think it’s an accident. You know, we could talk about scheme and where they fit in the cap and future picks and all that good stuff. And, you know, I do and stats. I mean, you know that I’ll do all that stuff a lot, but sometimes it’s just attitude. You know, like George Pickins running the route half speed. Well, Rogers and Ramsay and they already have it in Cam Hayward and others are going to grab him by the face mask and that doesn’t fly around here. You know what I mean? Like I think some toughness, some attitude, some arrogance, some bullyish, bulliness is clearly part of the offseason picture without mortgaging the future. You know what I mean? [Applause] [Music] The other thing I have here, and I apologize, but I don’t know who Johnny Chedric is, but anyways, on Twitter, John or Donnie put out his top 25 Steelers of the 2000s, just from the 2000s. And a bunch of people sent me that direction. Hey, Matt, you got to check this out. I want to hear what you have to say about it. Blah blah blah. just the 2000s. We’re going to talk about Joe Green, LC Greenwood, Rod Woodson, etc. Now, that would be a fun list, too. And I have done that before, just greatest all-time Steelers. But if we’re just doing the 2000s, which is, you know, it’s 2025. It’s it’s a nice chunk. It’s a nice round number, you know, of the millennium. So, I’m going to spin through his list super quick. He went Ben, Troy, AB, Fica, Ward, Watt, Harrison, Hayward, Pouncy, Lev, Bell at 10. Now we get to 11. Heath, Frier, Porter, Diccastro, Minka at 15, Bettis, Hampton, Timmons, Ike, Aaron Smith at 20, Willie Parker, San Antonio Holmes, Lamar Woodley, Chris Boswell, which I’d love to see on there, and Jason Gilden Rh rounds it out. So, all kinds of people on Twitter ask me, give me your top 10, you know. So, I’m like, all right, I’ll do it. What the heck? Because immediately I looked at his list and I’m not here to criticize his list. I just wanted to throw those names out first so you could have them on the tip of your tongue, you know, of, you know, just so you don’t we don’t forget anybody. That’s why I named 25 that he threw out there. It’s a good list. So, I did my 10 and please, am I crazy or what? TJ Watt’s number one. I mean, defensive player of the year, could have multiple. About to become maybe the highest paid defensive player of all time. Already was. I think he’s clearly number one. I went with Antonio Brown number two. You don’t have to like him. He might be nuts, but he’s the best Steeler receiver ever. And for a long stretch, it was him and Julio Jones as the best player in his respective position in the NFL. Ben three. Now, that felt rough to put Ben all the way down at three. We know his accomplishments, but I didn’t want to wait quarterback too much, you know, like obviously if you’re starting a team, Ben. And he’s phenomenal. But was he ever the best quarterback in the league? Probably not. He was always basically top five, which is incredible. And he’s in all these guys are to me easy Hall of Famers, including Antonio Brown, by the way. And then this one hurt my soul a little bit, too. But I put Paul Lamalu at four. And he didn’t he didn’t do anything to be uh what’s wrong with Troy? I don’t know. I just some one of these guys had to come in fourth of those top ones. I’m sure some of you were saying Antonio Brown should be four, and I understand that. Troy also was one of the top two players at his position like AB for a long stretch. Unbelievable highlights in Impact and transcendent player, very likable. So that one hurt, but I didn’t know how to rank those top four. I thought Watt clearly had to be one. Then at five, I was like, hm, okay, now I’m starting to have a slightly different tier. Cam Hayward, long career, Walder Payton man of the year, playing better now than ever, massive contributor. Then I went with Fanica Pro. I mean, Hall of Fame guard, much like the same conversation, coincidentally, it was him and Hutchinson were the best two guards in the league for a long stretch. Then it went James Harrison, also a defensive player of the year. didn’t have a ton of longevity, but remember him on his best days was a nightmare to play against. I don’t know why this original list that I’m pillaging this from had Bettis so low, but I have Bettis next. And I just wanted to I I was want to just double check this one. I’m like, how long was he actually in the 2000s? He retired in 2000. He played through 2005. So he gave you 2000 and earlier all through 2005. So I went with Bettis, but maybe I’m missing something. I didn’t know why he was so low on that list. Then I went with Hines Ward. And I know Ward was much higher on the original list. And I get criticized of being a Ward hater, which is the absolute wrong word. I adored Ward as a player, as a fan when I used to watch him. And I think he’s a borderline Hall of Famer that won’t never get in. And I understand why he’s so loved around here, but I just think guys like Cam and Fanica and Harrison are better at what they did. Then I had Pouncy, rock solid leader, elite center, big- time player. So that was my top 10. And then my just misseds were Lev Bell, who on his best day might have been a better football player than Jerome. I know that that’s blasphemous. That’s like saying AB is better than Swan, but realistically, Lev Bell was basically the best running back in the league for two or three years, too. And Casey Hampton, who’s a bit of a dinosaur in terms of just run plugging noses, but few did it as well. I mean, I keep mentioning like these guys that are top two at their position for a long stretch. It was Hampton and Wilfork. Now, the list that I originally said has so many great names. It’s hard to narrow down. It’s an unbelievable organization. We’ve all been very fortunate to see all these players, even if we don’t remember the 70s or Rod Woodson or those type of dudes. In the 2000s, we have seen a lot of stud players. Give me your list. Where am I short? You know who am I forgetting? I don’t think we forgot anyone. You could make the argument Boswell should be fifth. I mean, but he’s a kicker, so I am going to hold that against him. Um, anyone that could knock on the door from this team, you know, then we did mention a few obviously Watt Hayward, etc. So, just want to know your thoughts. Who am I too low on? Who am I too rough on? All that good stuff. I just thought this would be a fun way to do it to end the week. All right, guys. And then again, talk about building a bully. Harrison, Pouncy, Bettis, Cam Award, you know that dude, go back to the top of the show. All right, everyone. Over and out. [Music]
Steelers are in process of “building a bully”.

Ben should be 4th. Glorious QB but an underachiever, due to work ethic – and it showed. Troy bumps him easily.
Not many mentioning Alan Faneca .
Set the Tone and Establish Dominance on the OFFENSIVE and DEFENSIVE Line!!! BE A BULLY!!!
Boswell is the most criminally underrated player in steeler history
Quarterback is a more important position than a edge rusher
Additionally, Ben was a better quarterback than TJ is an edge rusher
Ben is the number one slot on that list Absolutely zero question about it
Troy is number two
Harrison is number three
Antonio Brown is number four
All of these players have had major game changing plays and game impact plays
TJ Watt is number five. Watt has a lot of impact plays, but very few if any game changing or critical game impactful plays
Because of that, I cannot put him above the other three players. Understanding that no matter what Ben is number one.
James Harrison, Mr.Lambert, Hardy Nickerson, Hines were bullies too could go on
I agree Matt, Ryan Shazier, Bell , Ben, J. Bettis, AB , Pouncy, Cam, T.J. Watt, Troy P. , Hines Ward. Though it would be nice to add more. Thank you Matt for this show.
1. TJ Watt
2. Troy P
3. Big Ben
4. AB
5. Faneca
6. Heyward
7. Bettis
8. Harrison
9. Pouncey
10. Ward or Bell
AB was one of the best to ever do it at the WR position. The end of his tenure here and life outside football will taint how much of a generational player he was that mastered his craft as a 6th round pick. He should be a no doubt HOFer and has a ring too. It’s actually disgraceful to say he wasn’t better than Swann.
TJ not better than deebo
Ben is clearly number one to me. Without him, we still have just four rings. All those other guys are great, but the nature and importance of the QB position make him the clear number one.
It's a contradiction: you are praising the 'build a bully' concept but undervalue what Hines Ward brought. I would take a WR room full of 86 over 84.
Honestly I put Ben at #1 just because of the immense importance of the position.
Matt love your content but #43 was better then #90 for sure
Hopefully, bullyness is a good thing if the Steelers are ever going to instill fear into their opposition like they once did.
Troy #1
TJ at 1 is a stretch… without Ben there are zero rings, so clearly Ben is 1… Polamalu is 2 and it's not even close… Antonio Brown is 3, TJ at 4 and Harrison at 5… let's not disrespect how great those teams of 05 and 08 were…
Now we just need the Offensive Line to be Bully's otherwise we won't have complementary football.
1) Big Ben
2) Troy
3) AB
4) Watt
5) Heyward
6) The Bus
7) Hines
8) Silverback
9) Pouncey
10) Aaron Smith
1. Ben
2. Troy
3. TJ
4. AB
5. Heyward
6. Bettis
7. Pouncey
8. Harrison
9. Boswell
10. Minkah
List was fine.
Troy P is number 1 to me
Timmons
Too many excellent Steeler players to try and put in order.
Idk I’m thinking AB or Troy #1. Ben and TJ after
Was I just younger, I feel like Troy had even more impactful and astonishing plays consistently than TJ? Love this list exercise!
Ben and Troy both have had more “take over game” and “game winning plays” than TJ to this point (cough…especially in playoffs/super bowls…cough).
I think it’s fair to say:
1. Ben
2. Troy
3. TJ
4. AB
AB could very easily be number one
No chance tj watt is in the same breathe as polomalu or big ben
Credit to the original list, and not to diminish Matt's Top 10, but with so many great players this organization has been fortunate to have since Joe Greene laid the foundation, picking a list of even 10, let alone the Steelers Mt. Rushmore, even for a decade, will always be nearly impossible. So many great players, so many epic plays, and all the Hall of Fame guys, you will always have to leave guys off that list that would have a bronze statue in another franchise!
10 J. Porter Sr.
9 C. Heyward
8 T. Watt
7 A. Brown
6 J. Harrison
5 H. Miller
4 C. Hampton
3 H. Ward
2 B. Roethlisberger
1 T. Polamalu
TJ isn't #1…. I love it Matt…. But TJ isn't #1… It's Ben
Matt…. What have we been since Ben..? And mind you Watt has been a part of that… I love Watt, but Matt… It's Ben
Matt….I can't get over it buddy… Ben #1 and Troy #2…. Gosh, I LOVE WATT! But, wins matter, Championships matter… Wattis close to #5 than he is #1… There's kind of a gap between #1 and literally everyone else… This was a good exercise Matt!
Figured I would entertain you guys since you always do it for us.
My top 10 all time Steelers (im 32 so you will only see one 70s player on their).
1. Ben (Watched him clutch more wins than anymore QB in the last 15 years and hes my hero i have met him and got his autograph on two different jerseys on being home other the killer bee)
2. Troy
3. Jermone
4. Heath
5. Hines
6. mean Joe (ive watched his tape and oh my lord 😮)
7. Ike
8. Joey
9. Antonio
10. Bell 🔔
Edit: Cam and TJ will be on this list Cam soon TJ later
Watt at 1 is the stupidest take I’ve seen in a while! Watt isn’t top 10
Big Ben is #1, Troy, AB, TJ and Cam are my top 5 but here's the thing, hearing that list made me realize that even the Patriots top25 wouldn't even be close as far as great individual players in the last 25 years! WE HAVE BEEN SO LUCKY AS STEELER FANS TO ALWAYS GET TO MARVEL AT GREAT PLAYERS…ALWAYS!
Loved this episode!!!!!
Having TJ as the #1 this century is completely insane. Leave #7 out of the discussion because putting any player above him is ridiculous. Putting TJ over our other DPOYs who came up HUGE and dominated in the playoffs is recency bias to the extreme.
Harrison was a DPOY who teams feared and was double teamed or held every play. Yet he should have gotten a SB MVP and crushed it in his other playoff games.
Troy was a DPOY who also carried the team during playoff runs. He always showed up and was my AFCC MVP for his second title run.
Peezy absolutely DESTROYED the manning colts in Indy and was a lynchpin for one of the biggest playoff upsets in history. He may never sniff the HOF, but he did more for Steelers playoff success than TJ and it’s not even close.
Watt is the best defender in the league in September-November, but he has been a non factor in almost every playoff game and that is part of the reason he has never won one.
Maybe I’m old, but I’ve seen way too many Steelers that raised their game for the playoffs to put players that fall off in the biggest games above any of them. TJ needs to come up big when it counts to approach any “best” discussion with me.
I have a hard time picking between TJ and Troy at #1. If he resigns he'll end up my 1. Then AB, then Ben, then Boswell, he's almost carried the offense on his back this whole decade and the last couple seasons of the past one. The Super Bowl pick gives Harrison an edge over a "pick em" loggam of Casey, Hines, Jerome, Heath, Maurkice, Cam, and Faneca.
Nice first list shoutout to Jason Gildon.
Bell problem is he couldn't stay healthy. And I can't put Watt over Ben. Ben won 2 Superbowls.
Aaron Smith, Hampton and the beard are the most criminally underatted front 3. That front had harrison, Woodley getting shine every game
