Josh Giddey Close On New Contract With Bulls | Should Bulls Keep Yuki Kawamura?

Josh Giddy and the Chicago Bulls close on a new deal. That’s what Casey Johnson and Jamal Collier with ESPN would have you believe. We’re going to discuss that. We’re also talk about the Bulls keeping Yuki Kar Moa around as he has absolutely been a great playmaker in summer league so far for the Bulls. We’re going to talk about all that and more on today’s Locked on Bulls. You are Locked On Bulls, your daily Chicago Bulls podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. I’m Hayes, host creator of Chicago Bulls Central, Chicago Bear Central YouTube pages and podcast. Pat, when I’m not here, do you introduce yourself the same with the same excitement as I do? Do you say I’m the host of the Chicago Bears podcast? You just say I’m I’m Hey, I’m uh Pat, I’m pretty sure I just say it’s your boy Pat the Designer back at it again. I think I just go with my normal uh intro. I don’t get as as prestigious as you do. So, nobody can do it like you. Hey, man. We appreciate you guys for tuning in every day. We’re going to break down everything going on with the Chicago Bulls. And we’re starting off with this Josh Giddy thing. So, Jamal Collier of ESPN noted yesterday that um Josh Giddy and the Bulls have had some very positive discussions in regards to the new contract. uh even going so far as to say that Josh Giddy had a meeting with Billy Donovan in the last couple of days and has a meeting scheduled with the Bulls front office sometime this week which it’s Wednesday that only leaves a couple of days left but Pat it seems like Josh Giddy and his representation are going to have one last meeting with the Chicago Bulls and I’m guessing at that point the determination is either we’re taking whatever the Bulls best offer is or the qualifying offer if I had to just guess where they are at this point in time. How do you feel about the Bulls and Joshy being close to a new deal? Yeah, listen. I mean, the the I think that this probably means they’re going to settle on whatever the price is. I don’t know if this means the Bulls have acquiesed a little bit more closer to 30 million. I don’t know if this means that Josh Giddy is willing to take now a little bit less than 30 million. Excuse me. But the the conversation now is probably around him getting a long-term deal done. Um, which is what I expect to happen here because I I talked about it, right? Like you can bet on yourself. You can go out there and you can be the 15 8 and 8 guy. I don’t know if you going to get back to this level of money though. Uh, um, at any point again as you come up through the career. Now, if you’re a 25 8 and8 dude like the score that we saw of him at the end of the season last year, bet on yourself. Put 11 million on the table and say, “Bet, I’ll see y’all next offseason.” I think Jimmy Butler did that with us, didn’t he? didn’t he say like I’m not taking uh uh the deal y’all have for me. I’m going to come back. I’mma bet on myself. End up balling out that season and then we had to pay him the bag. I feel like Jimmy But I think Jimmy Bull’s first extension went straight forward. I think that’s what Jimmy was prepared to do before we traded him. Was that the gave Jimmy a kind Did we not give Jimmy a big deal or did that era? Yeah, but I don’t I don’t think that I don’t remember those those talks going I I do know and people forget this. I talked about this on central today. Joe Kim Noah went through that. People forget that. Joe Kim Noah’s first deal coming out of his rookie scale extension, he he him and the Bulls had a long negotiation in regards to that in which he ended up uh getting a really sizable deal. But um I don’t remember I’m not saying you’re wrong. I just I don’t remember it off the top of my head. Uh rookie year, fouryear, $5 million deal. And then yeah, he played out his full rookie year all four years and then he got a fiveyear $92 million deal from the Chicago Bulls. Yeah, but that means he didn’t play on the qualifying offer. Qualifying offer would be his fifth year. So if he had if he had if he had an extension between four and year five, that means fifth year. So yeah, he got he got it straight up. Shout out to him. Um but oh, maybe the Bulls were offering him a deal. Maybe the Bulls were like, “We’re trying to pay you less and offering him a deal.” Either way, like I I think the fact that you know, you’re you’re in this position with Josh Giddy where you know, you can get this deal done. seems like from from what Josh uh uh Collier’s reporting um I got too many J’s in my mind now. Uh what Collier’s report reporting is that it’s coming from a very amicable hey listen we we’re on good terms here kind of place. I think that’s the best you could hope for out of this whole giddy situation. And it does not seem like there’s going to be like any lingering like animosity after these deals or any this deal or anything like that. It seems like they had a negotiation and negotiations get a little bit rough. It doesn’t mean that like you hate each other coming out of it, but like when you negotiate, we me you’ve both said it like usually a good negotiation is where both sides feel like they they they gave up something that they didn’t want to give or they didn’t get something that they wanted out the deal. It’s usually where the both where the best negotiations come from. Uh I think Jamal Collier in his reporting floated around 25 million. Uh we know that reportedly Josh Giddy wants around 30. So it’s going to be interesting to see where the the the number splits at there. But Casey Johnson, for what it’s worth, also on the fast break yesterday evening, basically reported the same thing that Jamal Collier from ESPN did. So again, having that kind of that local uh guy uh to to back up that that reporting does seem like make it seem like a deal getting done here is probably happening sooner rather than later, which I think is best for all sides. Hey, and by the way, hey, if the Bulls get Josh G at 25 million, all y’all Bulls fans, I get your hands ready because you going to be clapping for Arturus Card. Hell of a deal. I listen, I tell you this, Pat, and we got to wait to see what the deal is coming down to depending on this Josh Giddy deal, the Modest Boozelis uh uh draft pick, the Noah Essen draft pick. Um the deal. Yeah, we’ll see. We got a longer road on that one. Um the the the Trey Jones deal, which was a solid resign, and the Isaac Auru trade. AK’s quietly had a pretty solid off season. I It’s so weird, bro, because like I literally am just like, is he just did he legitimately just say, “We’re not going to do anything and we just going to sit on our hands and see what this team does for like three years?” Because remember when he first came in, he was like, “Deals, deals, deals, deals, deals.” And then the first came in and then and then that off and then people forget too even that second off season, right? like after after the the Lonzo ball went down and the Bulls got eliminated by the Bucks that next off seasonason we brought in Goran Dragic and Andre Drummond to help solidify our bench and Goran Dragic didn’t work out but people forget that like it’s not like AK just said oh well we’re just not going to do anything like Drummond end up staying here for years being pretty productive I think that clearly that signing was still them hoping or thinking that Lonzo Ball was going to return I do think that now he he waited way too long to pivot off of it but I do think that there was that thing that they just really thought Lonzo was going to come back and be fully healthy and that’s really what kind of threw off those plans there. Yeah, I can see that. I can fully see that. I The one thing that I the one thing that I like about this if if you do get this deal done is that you got it done in a respectful way that that it it benefits the player. It benefits the team moving forward and you don’t have that animosity created again. Now, this is not and I think people got to realize this too. This is not the the players going in there and you know punching the GM in the face and they just going at it. this is agents and our tourist carnos and probably Mark Eversley trying to work through some things here. Um, and so that’s usually why it ends up taking a little bit longer, but like I love the fact that it seems like at the end of this this is a we we understand where the Bulls are coming from. The Bulls understand where we’re coming from. We’re just coming from two different sides of this and we trying to find a way to meet in the middle. So, like I it is crazy to say, but it feels like I saw this on Reddit and I got to go find the post again. It’s been a couple of weeks now, so it may be more difficult to find, but it’s like the tale of two AKs. Like the AK that basically did nothing in his first iteration of this Bulls team and now the AK that’s just making really smart moves, not only for the Bulls, but like really smart moves for the current salary cap that is eviscerating teams left and right. Hey, I mean, yeah, and we talked about that before. We probably we may need to do a deeper dive on that on Friday’s episode and talk about like how the Bulls are set up to really continue like to possibly thrive under the new salary cap era where a lot of other teams are scrambling. And I’ll say this, I think last year about half the teams didn’t pay the luxury tax. I think it’s the most teams in like the last 15 years that didn’t pay the luxury tax. Teams are really starting to kind of catch up to where the Bulls have lived at for a long time. So, you know, take that for what you will. But the Josh Giddy deal, I hope that it gets done. I hope that they get them locked in and then at that point our off season’s done. Like, you know, I I don’t know if any other trades are happening. I know the Bulls are still involved in some trade rumors and things like that, but I I think after Josh Giddy’s deal is done, I honestly think the Bulls are packing it up until the trade deadline. They’re just going to evaluate, evaluate, evaluate until the trade deadline. And I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad place for the Bulls to be. Yeah. I think, and what I love about this is the Kaminga deal is dead because it just makes no sense. It’s been when they drafted people who still thought the Bulls were going to trade after drafting Noah Essen. Okay, I can give you that. But then after the Isaac Akuru trade on top of drafting drafting no Essen, if you still thought the Bulls were trading for Jonathan Kaminga, you deserve to have your feelings hurt. I saw I saw um what’s boy that work for the Sun Times. You know who it is. Uh Junior. Yeah, Joe Cowie. I saw Joe Cowie uh put that in an article that you know the the the trade talks around Jonathan Kaminga are quiet. I was like they should be shot to the ground at this point. Like why Jonathan Kaminga does not make sense for this team at all at all at all. He’s going to be a warrior and it’s not going to make sense there either. That’s funny. Yeah, it doesn’t make any sense. Um but yeah, so there there’s that. We’ll see what happens if Josh Giddy deal is announced. That’s we’ll probably do a breaking news episode as long as me and Pat uh are both available because that that’ll probably warrant that. But um so stay in tune with us for that. But next up, we’re going to be discussing the Bulls and another point guard, Yuki Carmore, who’s been making quite an impression in summer league. We’ll talk about all that. But first, we got to get into a message from Monarch Money. Ever wish managing your money felt easier? With Monarch Money, it can. More locked on bulls coming up next. I guess you really can’t say young ladies anymore with with purses cuz there’s a lot of manb bags going around now. like the the man the mercers are really growing and um it’s a European handbag. Yes. Yes. That and the the I love how the fanny packs are coming back too in and in in thing like there’s a comedian um Derek Stro I found him on TikTok. He’s hilarious and he just talks about like how things in the ‘9s have come back but it’s so different today cuz like everyone’s wearing them. He’s like if you were a man in the 90s somebody on a bike would come up and just punch you in the face. and you had a fanny pack on. That’s funny. That is hilarious. Um, with that said, Yuki Kora, um, completely killing it down in in the G- League as far as from a playmaking standpoint. Um, you know, his scoring, he did score double double what 15 uh points, 10 rebound, I mean, 10 assists, I think, in the last game. Um and and so like Jir Young, a player that last year uh in the G-League averaged over 21 points per game, a block and a half, a steal per game. He’s looked bad in summer league so far. Not to say that Jir Young can’t turn it around for G-League, but I look at it this way. Yuki K Moore has been so good playmaking wise. To me, he’s the type of point guard that if you want to simulate what you’re planning on running on the main roster, Yuki can come in and do that. He can provide a little bit of scoring as well. I like him for the development of young guys like like Lachlan uh Albrrick even when Noah Essen plays some minutes down there. I like that. Uh you got guys like Caleb Grill, Uga Poplar who you signed as well. Like having a distributor at point guard helps develop those guys. But how you felt about Yuki Kmore? Listen, I I talked about this a little bit yesterday. I I like Yuki. I like his game. Um, I think the fact that, you know, he knows that Yuki is is the perfect has the perfect mindset for a 58 point guard. I know 110% you may block this shot, so I’m going to pass this basketball. And I think that’s the that’s the kind of mindset you have to have, especially when I think he only shoots the three ball at 33%. He shot it a little bit better here, but throughout his career, he hasn’t shot the three ball necessarily well, and that makes it difficult for you. He’s got to improve that three ball. Here’s the thing for me. I for the people that are so passionate about Yuki getting a two-way or being on the G-League roster. Sure, I don’t care. He’s not going to play up here. Like, he’s not going to be an NBA point guard. You can throw the Mugsy BS comparisons at me. You can throw the like I I I wish him nothing but success. I’d love to see him become an NBA point guard, but a league where you are not a elite defender for your size where you’re really causing issues for people. Um, you’re completely undersized. I mean, this ain’t like this isn’t even like oh boy in New Orleans that’s that’s undersized, right? This ain’t even, you know, a Trey Young at six foot tall undersized. This is a we’re both taller than him. We are both taller than Yuki Kawamura. So if you want to have Yuki on the team, sure. He’s not gonna play at the NBA level. And I think that to me is the thing where I I’m not bothered by it either way cuz I don’t think Jir Young’s going to play at the NBA level either and he is taller. Yeah. So yeah, swap him around. Maybe Yuki. I The one thing I’ll say about development at the G-League level, I would like to see Yuki with with Lachlan Albbrick because I think that Yuki is going to focus on getting everybody else involved. I do think that’s very important for G-League players, especially if you’re trying to develop your pieces. We’re not drafting any more point guards. So, get you a guard that whose focus is facilitating. I would like to see that. I think he’s got a good IQ and he can move the basketball up and down the court and get the ball to guys like Lachlan Albrich, Noah Essing if he spends any time down there, you know, like those are the things that that’s why they had Dalon Terry down there in the beginning for so long because Dalon Terry was leaving Dana there every game with 14 assists. Yeah. And he was uh him and Adama Senogo was actually a nice duo there in the G- League for a minute. So I’mma miss a Dama. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We actually play against them on Friday. You know, they added that game to the schedule. So that feel slow. I saw him they was doing an interview with him in the game we was uh watching. They were doing it not with him but uh doing an interview with one of the draft picks and Adama was just in the back moving them feet slow. I was like they ain’t get no faster. Yeah, Adama. But yeah, I think Yuki’s the perfect player um for for that G-League level of competition. Like you said, I I I if he makes it to the NBA, great. I I mean, no no no knock on him there. But I do think like in if you’re you looking at how he can best help the Bulls is that he can help develop those guys that you drafted. He can help get the ball to Lachlan Albert. He can help get the ball to Noah Essen Gay for the time he spends down there. He can help get Caleb Grill and and Wuga Popppler wide open three-point shots with his ability to drive and create those drives. They’re not shooting. Surprisingly enough, they’re not shooting in some like you came in here because you guys were elite shooters and you’re not shooting. I don’t think I’ve seen Caleb Grill shoot yet. I ain’t going to lie. He did. He made it three in game two. Yeah, I made I remember he made a three in game two. I don’t even think he played in in the third uh summer league game. So, there’s that. Um but yeah, Yuki Yuk Yuki is a perfectly fine player for that level of competition. I do like watching him play basketball because his vision is truly next level. We could talk all day about is he NBA player or not, but I tell you what, that playmaking is NBA level. It’s just unfortunately you have to have size. You have to have more than just that to be good at the NBA level. So, we’ll see if he could develop that. I mean, listen, Dysfunctional said heightism is a thing. Yeah. in the NBA. Yes, heightism is a thing. Yes, if you if you are under six feet tall by a lot. Yes, heightism is a thing. By the way, we always talk about them lying up. Is he really 5’8 or I don’t think you going to lie when they 5’8. Like at that point like at at why lie? Because if he was actually like 5’6 that makes it more impressive. It’s like at some point it’s like and either embrace the short going shorter makes it better. Makes it makes it better. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, uh but no I you didn’t say going smaller makes it better. That would have been the pause thing there. You’re good, bro. I know. I know you got a little pause PTSD right now after the other day, but you’re good, bro. You’re good. I was nervous on that one. Uh, no, but the the one thing that I love about Yuki and and where it it’s going to be if he does make the roster, it will be because of this is because he focuses on what he does well. And there’s so many NBA players that I would love to see do that on this team. Absolutely. Patrick Williams. like the thing that you do well, just focus on that. Develop that because that’s what gets you on the floor. Like Yuki has a skill set that can get the problem is he can’t defend nobody. Like he would get picked on in the pick and roll all day. Yeah. Can you imagine Jason Tatum getting switched on to Yuki Kora? Oh my god, bro. Like forget that. Like like imagine somebody like imagine like a Dylan Brooks getting switched on Yuki Kow Moore. Yuki might swing on him. He He still Yuki took on a little bit too much Memphis. Yeah, I mean I I heard Yuki drop a type typeish. I almost messed up on the pot. I heard Yuki drop a typeish on uh in an interview and I was like, “Wait a minute.” Like a little too much. Wait, really? Yes, bro. He said John Morance’s been teaching me English. That’s crazy. He was like, “What what uh what type of stuff has he taught you?” He was like, “Uh, what’s your favorite thing he’s taught you?” like typeish. I was like, “Oh, God. Dang it.” That sounds like exactly what Jaw would teach somebody, too. It’s like, “Hey, J, can you help me learn English a little bit more?” Yeah. So, what I need you to do at first, I need you to typeish and then if he was from Chicago, be like, “Fimm.” You got you got to drop a phone grave. Uh on bro. Uh but so, but yeah, let us know your thoughts so you you can comment more down uh down below. The Bulls do take on today in summer league. to take on the Milwaukee Bucks at 5:30 Eastern, 4:30 Central time. So, uh, we’ll see what happens with that one. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to do a live call on that one. I know I’m not. Uh, before we get out of this topic, though, you you got to comment on this, bro. You What What were you What were your thoughts, bro? Bro, I mean, blockers get dunked on. Like, the picture makes it look terrible. Like, no, no, no. The duck made it look terrible. The duck was crazy. This man got dunked on, bro. Like Vince Carter, bro. Bro, it’s, you know, it is what it is. Like, yeah. Hey, but he gave him that work that game, too. So, you know, he did. He put up 21, which is always something you can argue back. Like, Quantis is kept, he’s playing better than Ace Bailey. Yeah. The last two games he’s playing better than a lot of lottery picks. But, you know, we’re going we’re going to leave that be. We’ll talk about that at the end of summer league. We’ll get into that cuz I don’t think they ready to hear that quite yet cuz all the Bulls fans, the skies falling, they was tripping over uh uh Juan Bearinger having seven blocks. We’ll talk a little bit about that, man. Next up though, we’re going to talk about the Bulls preseason schedule, which tell you what, Pat, if you’re looking for a preseason uh uh any type of schedule to get you ready for the NBA season, the Bulls surely got one of those, man. We’ll talk about all that and more right after this. All right, Pat, the Bulls preseason schedule dropped yesterday, which And also, did you see the preseason merch that they dropped? I did. I did. I’m It’s actually pretty good. And I was like, “Wait a second.” Now you the merch god. I I buy in season and stuff, but I might have to cop that. Yeah, bro. I’m like, “Wait a second, bro.” Like that that you were going to buy it no matter what it was. You was going to buy it. Anyway, read between the lines. You know what I like? Monarch money. We knew Monarch money. Uh but the Bulls preseason schedule drops. So, we start our season October 7th uh against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Um that’s in Cleveland. And then we have two home games back toback. One against Cleveland, once one against the Milwaukee Bucks. We go out on the road against the Denver Nuggets on October 14th. And then we come back home against the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 16th. Pat, out of out of I’m looking at the matchups in these. Now, we know that not every team is going to play their starters a lot, but of course, you got the depth, the whole starting five of the Cleveland Cavaliers. You got the front court of Giannis and Miles Turner with the Milwaukee Bucks. You got the the revamped Denver Nuggets. They got Cam Johnson, Nicola Joic there. Jamal Murray, they revamped their bench as well. Minnesota Timberwolves, you got Anthony Edwards. M. By the way, bro, please tell me you’ve seen they actually dropped merch with half of Anthony Edwards face and Michael Jordan’s face. It says like father like son in the font of of the uh little Wayne Burman. Oh, I got to send it to you, bro. I ordered it immediately. I knew you ordered it. Look, look at you. You talking about read between the lines. You can’t help yourself. Jordan’s on it. Here we go. Um and and of course Rudy Gobear, Nas Reed, Julius Randle as far as a front court there. How do you feel about this preseason schedule? Uh listen, it’s going to get you prepared. And I I think the one thing that I love about it is it’s going to get Modis prepared. The the conversation this preseason has been heavily around Modis and in I’m sorry, in uh in summer league and and it looked like in game three, right? like, “Oh, yeah. He He’s been in this league before.” Like, he he knows what he’s doing. He he feels comfortable all of a sudden. Um, that’s what this season is truly going to be about, developing your lottery pick from last year even more to this next level. And you get the opportunity to do it. Hey, Mis, you have no easy matchups in the beginning of this preseason. uh depending on how they switch you off or where what position the Bulls end up playing him at, but I’m assuming he’s still playing at the four and it’s nothing before in this. You got Giannis. I don’t know. Did he wasn’t starting for any of the Giannis games last year, was he? I don’t believe cuz we played the Bucks weirdly early. Didn’t we play all our games in the the first two or three months? We played all three months of the season. Yeah. So, he really didn’t get a matchup versus Giannis. and uh you know Iodumu dropping the this guy’s basically Giannis in the making. It’ll be interesting to see that matchup. I I think that’ll be a lot of fun to see. Um and the hope is that you know you don’t want to wear these guys out. You don’t want to you know go too hard in in preeason, but I think for where the Bulls are at right now, right, like you can’t take any opportunities not to develop these young players. Um and that’s what I love about this preseason schedule. Yeah, the preseason schedule will put you in in a situation where you’re going to be measured up against all teams except for the Bucks that were in the playoffs last year. Uh the Bucks have made drastic improvements to their roster as well. So, it’s it’s it’s a it’s a nice schedule to me. It’s it’s a good measuring stick uh preseason schedule as far as just getting yourself ready and in gear for the season. Now, I don’t know how much the starters are going to play versus the bench players or anything like that, but like I said, I think you put yourself in a really good situation. Well, you didn’t put the NBA schedule in a really good situation to get you ready for the season. And that’s all you really can hope for in the preseason. So modest first matchup had nine minutes versus the Bucks. Second matchup had six minutes versus the Bucks. Had 15 minutes versus the Bucks. Okay. So he might have got on the floor versus Giannis. 16 minutes in that in that last one and then finished it with 13 minutes. So he probably had a couple of matchups at least for Giannis. Yeah. So, but even so, like I I just I just love the opportunity to develop these young players. And the Bulls preseasons have been NBA preseason is weird. It’s like I feel like when it was longer, guys would sit out a lot more. Now, you playing like you’re getting the starting lineup pretty much. Yeah, you’re getting the starting lineup for at least the first half. At least the first probably three quarters. And usually by like that I would say the game probably the Bucks game honestly. Usually that third preseason game, you go into the third quarter and you’re trying to like get the get the work in and then kind of you start to relax on that. Maybe you play a little bit more in the Denver one, too. But you I I wouldn’t expect anything from that Minnesota matchup. Yeah, I agree with you there. So, we shall see what happens there. 1. I really hope they keep Yuki. He plays with heart and hard work despite being born definitely without an “NBA body.”
He can be around to show people like PWill what playing with heart looks like. Plus he’s a great classic PG that will make others better.

  2. Do you think that with it not working out the first 2 years with AK being more proactive it's made him gun-shy for the last few years so he became reactive instead?

  3. Jimmy Butler did get a qualifying offer one year. He bet on himself. And I think that was his new deal with the Miami heat. I think…. but he did turn down low ball offer one year

  4. Great show fellas. Hopefully bulls sign Giddey to a reasonable deal bc I believe he’s worth keeping alongside Coby, Matas and Noa. Also, I strongly feel that the bulls should keep Yuki..Whether that’s on a two way deal or just a g league contract, the kid deserves a role on a team somewhere.

  5. Met Pat right outside the gig today! He’s a living legend – just like you would think! Thanks again Pat for stopping for me and showing love 🙏🏽

  6. Yuki can turn into an offensive gem with his superior passing and court awareness. He could also be a good double team defender and get a few steals to set up the fast break. The 2 games I saw I was impressed considering his size.Have him play with the 2nd unit Billy! Hashtag #KEEPYUKI
